there are some set goals that open up like the community center and the mines that you can look up to, they both open up only a few days into the game, other than that you can try leveling all your skills first
you can make up your own goals basically
but for a good start plant some crops and wait for them to grow, go do some fishing and foraging in the meantime

there's a cutscene that you can get starting day 5 that unlocks up the community center, but you have to walk from the bus stop for it to trigger, and it has to be a sunny day between 8 AM and 1 PM
after that you need to investigate the inside a bit, if you want to know: ||interact with the golden plaque in one of the rooms, the next day you'll get a letter from the wizard and then all you have to do is go to his tower and then it'll unlock the bundles||

Mushrooms give you 6 every day on 1.5, more money and good for early game energy
Fruit gives you an average of 1 fruit a day, less money, nice for gifts and helps a bit more with cc

You can’t change it once you’ve picked one. I personally like the fruit cave more, especially if you pick “gatherer” and “botanist” for foraging levels. It’s a nice way to get fruits for community bundles and for gifting villagers

If you just started, I'd recommend Vanilla to get a feel for the game.

Tips:

1. Don't feel like you have to min-max - It's 'fun' but you burn out
2. Fishing is good early game money
3. Be sure to mine and get materials to upgrade your tools
4. Don't plant too many crops beyond your ability to water/handle (You want to have some energy left to do other stuff)
5. Collect forage off the ground - ok money, good source of easy energy

Oh yeah - and the silly one - Check the date in game and how long crops take to grow. Seasons are 28 days long, it's awkward if you lose half your crops.

And the TV has useful tips if you talk to it daily
