you can get powdermelon seeds from some sources which are the only winter crop. you can also get winter mixed seeds which grow winter foragables

the first tool upgrade is really important, especially for axe to get hardwood, and pickaxe (which lets you mine twice as fast+)
(+animation speed isn't increased, but it takes half the amount of hits to mine)
