Fishing early on is trying to get your level up. Leveling up increases your distance you can cast and bar size in the mini game. Making for better fish quality with further fishing zones out. Hitting perfects gives more exp as a modifier when you catch them too. Once you get your levels up you can start using bait like you said for faster bites and eventually fishing tackle to make it easier to fish through a few different ways.

One way that has helped me design farms is to leave most trees intact from the start of the game: I will clear out trees to make a plot for my crops, usually right in front of the house, but all the rest I will leave as-is. Then when I start placing buildings, I am forced to place them in clearings between existing trees, after which I will chop the bordering trees down.

By doing this your main buildings get placed in more-or-less an organic fashion instead of a grid.

Then the pathing you place will also tend towards being more organic-looking, etc.

Not a spoiler. But yes, doing the skills pushes your exp up, eg catching fish levels fishing, breaking rocks in the mine increases mining, killing mobs is combat. Exp can vary on certain things, but it contributes to hitting levels still.

I would suggest buying the training rod from willy's shop for 25gold. It gives you a bigger green bar equivalent to level 5 fishing and makes fish escape slower, at the cost of not being able to catch strong fish. It's a good way to practice and level up if you're struggling with the mini game.

I usually go 10-15 lightnings rods to make sure I have enough to maximize battery production.

Originally I placed the lightning rods near trees and my crops thinking it would help save them from being struck. But apparently it doesn't matter where you place them. So now I have them lined up for easy collection
