You could try moving the Barn/Coop closer to more abundant grassy areas.

Like, as a bit of reference for you, on how long grass will likely last in the early game. This is day 28 of Spring on my Meadowlands farm... Which you ||START with a coop already and chickens||. The coop by this point has 8 animals, and barn had 4. The patch of grass in this area lasted through the whole season, and still has some left.

Lots of things can be fences, not just fences themselves! I like to use lightning rods as a makeshift fence but you can use hay bales or preserves jars once you have a ton of them.
