If you were able to plant it, then it can grow. The game doesn't let you plant fruit trees that can't grow.

If you must destroy it, you use an Axe on it, same as you would any other tree. The amount of hits it takes to destroy depends on the grade of your axe.

Fruit trees cannot be placed in Garden Pots, Teasaplings can.

I planted a fruit tree sapling in the wrong spot along the wall in my greenhouse on the left wall, directly under the cosmetic plant pot instead of two squares below it.. the game allowed me to plant it there but since there isn't enough space around the sapling it isn't growing and I cannot destroy it with any tool. I have tried using all tools including a bomb, with visible tool tip to ensure I'm using the tool on the correct square.

I have gold tools but I just tried hitting the sapling 20 times with my hatchet and that did nothing. The sapling is still planted.

Fruit trees can grow there. Cosmetic features of the greenhouse do not impede Fruit Tree growth. Unless you're actually getting a message each morning about the tree, then it's still growing. Even if you are getting the message, the location wouldn't be the problem in this instance.

I cannot speak on why you're having issues using an axe though. There is no mechanical reason it shouldn't be working.
