Alright, first off: fishing. Its an amazing source of money ealy game, its very rewarding. For crops, try potatoes.
Second, it takes some time to get friendships up. A heart is 250 points, and if you give someone a gift they love, thats only 80 points, talking to them is 20, etc, (and partial hearts dont show, it will only show when you have a full heart)
