If you are at the appropriate mining level, you could craft a staircase with 99 stones. It isn’t the best use of your stone, but it’s a viable option if you’re really struggling. Otherwise, go on good luck days and ignore anything on the floors that isn’t progress. For example, don’t spend a lot of time mining ores and killing monsters. Just find a ladder and go. You can always return to previous levels.

Torches are super easy. Chop a few trees and craft them.

You can also pickaxe torches you find in the mine, if you're being thrifty.

I did the first couple of farmers. Then I realized, on mobile, if you hold an item that can be placed on the ground (torch, furnace, path, doesn't matter) it highlights all available tiles as green. The dark tiles might be hiding the ladder down.
