Finding forageable, chopping down trees, chopping the stumps in the Secret Woods to get hardwood.
You can save time by only foraging on Saturdays. Forageables accumulate throughout the week and reach their peak on Saturdays before resetting on Sundays.

You should have chosen miner at level 5, but of the two I'd select excavator if you still need minerals for the museum, and gemologist if you don't so you can sell the useless gems you don't need for gifts or crafting or trading.

It gets easier as you level up in fishing and get better rods, with the ability to use bait to cut down on wait time and tackles to make life even easier.
If you're having trouble starting out with the bamboo rod, buy the training rod from Willy, which makes it easier to catch fish, even though you can only catch regular quality ones. Still, that will allow you to gain XP faster and level up to where fishing becomes easier.
