yeah you could not do that. I think sdv multiplayer is meant to be played together from the beginning, as opposed to in animal crossing where you start out alone, and then have visitors on your island when you want them to be there. You can marry your farmhand, for example, and they develop their own relationships etc in the multiplayer save. So while you can't visit like in animal crossing and that is a bummer, it's also nice to be able to progress in the story as a team!

Play at own pace and don't read too much, otherwise you will spoil the fun. I will say though that you will need A LOT of wood and to use all the free space on the farm Y1 and Y2 to grow a tree farm to plant / chop / replant. Also get another tree farm ready for tappers as you need those products for other crafting stuff
