The problem with the professions is that they are backwards. Shepherd and Coopmaster should really be combined into one skill so you don't have to choose between animal types and be granted at level 5, when it would be WAY more helpful. Then Rancher at level 10 could use a percentage boost to make it compete better with Artisan, and then have another profession, maybe one that increases animal production.

You need to have buildings maxed out in upgrades before you can paint them. Barns and Coops have to be Deluxe, Sheds have to be Big, Cabins have to be whatever cabins are when upgraded fully, and the farmhouse can only have the roof painted until you get it fully upgraded.

You can start off with stone. It lasts an entire year, so if you install it in Winter, when most people redecorate the farm, it will last through to the next Winter, when you'll probably be redoing the farm again.
I don't install fences in year 1 at all. I put my crops right in front of the house, then put the coop and barn when I get them on the other side of the crops, to take advantage of all that free grass.

The only way to get hay from a Silo is by getting hay from the Hopper in your Barns/coops. You need space open on the bench to take hay out.

And technically animals don't care about outside space.

You take the hay out of the hopper in the coop or barn. Once it's emptied, you can store the hay in a chest, and then make more by scything grass.
If your barn or coop is deluxe, with the autofeeders, in order to remove hay from the hoppers, you need to make space on the feeding trough by blowing up some hay with bombs (cherry is fine, or explosive ammo), then you can empty the silo via the hay hopper.
