Depends how many animals you have, and if they're coop/barn animals. Coop animals actually eat less Grass (but the same amount of Hay) as Barn animals

The ideal situation is that the grass re-grows enough daily to counteract them eating it.

clay works interestingly. instead of being random, there's a fixed repeating pattern of spots it shows up in, and every time you hoe a tile of ground the pattern shifts by a certain amount. by finding a clay spot and memorizing a certain pattern, you can get large amounts really fast. the same applies to the winter things.
