Yes, only regular quality. But the point of the training rod is that it really helps people who are having trouble getting the hang of fishing. Because at least you can catch SOMETHING and gain fishing xp from it.
I hated fishing when I first started playing. I sucked at it so badly that I avoided it for 3 years.

theres a nifty trick i learned, if your using fences to enclsoe your animals, plant grass on the same area as the fences, stops the animals form eating those specific patches, plus it'll re grow in the open areas

Your fishing bar gets bigger as you level fishing. The training rid sets it to level 5 which is way better than the tiny lv1 bar. But it only catches basic fish. So at level 3 or 4 switch to a fiberglass rod and use bait

@strange stream generally at the very start it's just crops. Once you can invest animals are nice too. Most people supplement income by fishing with an ly extra time/energy
