You need the iridium rod to apply tackle. Apply it the same way you do bait. Pick up the item, hover over the rod, and click on it. I can't say which button; I don't know what you're playing on.

It's past 2:30am here, but I just set up my farm and played for 2 days! It's called Flower Crown Farm, and it's a Riverland map. I didn't do much the first two days because I was trying to figure my way around, but I met a few people, got the fishing rod, and crafted a chest. (Oh, and planted the seeds of course.) I can't wait to have a dog.
