I guess a good question should be, where do I extract the new version of SMAPI?
@fathom wind If you download and run the new SMAPI installer to pick "install", SMAPI will handle cleaning up all the old stuff for you - updating is just installing new :)
(You extract the download wherever is convenient to run the installer from, like your desktop or whatever!)
Okay, then do I just delete the new one afterwards because it updates the old one? Or do I delete the old one?
mouse, what about mods that work, but there are visual defects. For instance, "Chests Anywhere" has visual glitches when renaming a chest... Should I list these as a warning for Android on the table? What are your thoughts?
I wonder now if it would be worth adding another advanced info column for android specific notes like this, so they are opt in, or if it should be warnings as you sayI feel like it's a good note to add for people wanting to know Android compatibility
@fathom wind You can delete any installer folders (old or new) after running them if you like! They're only used for the installing part, since SMAPI itself gets installed to your game folder. There's nothing SMAPI-related in the game folder that you need to remove though, since SMAPI handles that cleanup.
You might have mods you need to update too, but SMAPI will tell you about them when you run it.
Using mods on android is a minefield
So i have a question, i oreviously had mega storage installed, but it was creating problem and made the game crash. is there another mod that can expand chests?

@grim totem you are absolutely right. The problem I keep running into is that there is a paucity of info for what should work perfectly on Android. I found that perusing error logs that folks submit to the SMAPI log parser helps me find mods that work and don't work on Android. Just wanted to share the info with others.

Glad to hear it, @safe veldt! There's ChestEx and Chests Anywhere as well, but they're not compatible with each other (you'd have to choose one or the other)

Okay, talkohlooeys_portraits should work if it's inside your Mods -> Portraiture -> Portraits folder.
Can you try running the game, open a dialogue with some NPC, and press P?
If you don't see the portrait change, post a new smapi log.
(Also if that works I can tell you how to add the Shiko portraits so they work too)

Two options.
- you can combine all the portraits you actually want to use into a single folder and name it what you want
- You can duplicate the talkohlooeys_portraits folder, and replace each bachelor portrait inside the second one with the genderbend version. Then you'll be able to switch between genderbend and not genderbend, but all the other custom portaits will still be used.

@royal arrow hiya I've been looking at chest mods myself. Chestex says it's fully compatible with chests anywhere. Is this incorrect? (Before I try it lol)
Yea the description wasn't updated lol the mod author later made a post within the comments saying they're not fully compatible, because there's some buttons that Chests Anywhere moves (I don't remember the full details).
For my latest playthrough I went with Chests Anywhere + Colorful Chests, after using ChestEx on other saves. ChestEx is also not fully compatible with Automate, so I was like "meh I'll try Chests Anywhere." so far, the additional freedom has been amazing lol because it's your chests plus the shipping bin that are available anywhere! ๐

The spacecore errors are unfortunately normal for a client (the game is saved on the host's side, so spacecore just realizes belatedly that it can't do any saving stuff because it's not the main player). Not sure what's going on with Autogate, but you might try https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/3109 or another gate alternative. The CJB error looks like something with the 1 hit kill setting, but I'm not sure what 
@pale cradle re. The lag issues with Stardew Valley Expanded:
Each of you go into the mod folder for FarmTypeManager and find the config.json file there. Open it in a text editor and change the value for "MonsterLimitPerLocation" from null to 200. See if that helps with lag.

are you trying to play multiplayer on SVE? if so then both players need all the same mods, otherwise there will be issues
oh also it seems you are using npc map locations for SVE when you dont have SVE so thatโs probably the issue with that
I'm only using about 5 mods, all ui-related. No SVE-stuff (at least not in the co-op).
I tried running it with both the SVE version of NPC map locations and the normal one, but the result is the same
(It looks like?) it's okay to run a non-sve game with the sve map locations

Hey guys, idk if this is the right place to ask, but when the Stardew Valley update 1.5 finally comes out, will some mods be incompatible with the new update or do we just have to wait and see?
generally assume a mod won't be compatible until the mod developers confirm it is. You're always able to try and see--but that's at your own risk. This is just general mod stuff less than stardew specific
@vernal acorn @solid walrus SMAPI itself is updated the same day as a game update. You can check https://smapi.io/mods/ to check compatibility status of every known SMAPI mod, though the list is manually updated so it's not down to the minute, or anything. For content packs for other mods, their main compatibility will just be handled by the parent framework - so if Content Patcher loads, all content packs for it should load, and JSON assets is fine, all JA packs should load.
That said, for Content Patcher packs in particular (which edit the game assets in various ways), if the game changes some content dramatically, it's totally possible for a CP pack to revert changes or cause other problems depending on those changes and how the pack implements them :)
It's inevitable that there will be mods affected by changes to the game, but at least the major frameworks are usually updated ASAP.
do yall use vortex via nexus mods to manage your mods? /would you recommend using it? the only modding ive ever done is sims so im just reading everything rn and trying not to ask repetitive Qs
no, i don't use vortex
We typically recommend manually installing SDV mods. Vortex has gotten better but it has issues still removing old files. There also is ModDrop which works a little better if you do want a mod manager.

And yeah one convenient trick you can do even without the last link, is to make a subfolder called something like ..disabled mods or whatever (it technically only needs to start with one . but sometimes Windows doesn't let you), and then just move mods in it temporarily when needed. SMAPI will ignore the whole folder of folders :)
yeah i got smapi and ive been reading that getting started wiki! running into some issues but im trying to deal with em myself as not to spam everyone, given theyre usually answered somewhere already anyway
alright i cant figure this one out, sorry. every mod ive added i get this msg saying that its skipped by SMAPI "because it contains files, but none of them are manifest.json." cant figure out what that means/what step im skipping or software im missing.

SMAPI stops going deeper at the first non-readme, non-OS-thing file
womp there it is. the install guide on the wiki said i could organize into subfolders so its within another folder.

subfolders do work, but they need to contain no non-mod files and a mod cannot be inside another mod

@calm niche Updating Content Patcher should definitely never break your save.
It caused an old save that I had previously deleted to reappear and then my current save was gone, also it broke some mods. For example running around on the map my chracater would leave the camera and the camera would not follow him

I have just solved this problem because there is an empty Compatibility Patches folder
Not sure how updating Content Patcher could cause that. It's easy to test by reverting, though. If you want to look into potential other problems, you can share your log via https://smapi.io/log and someone can take a look to see if anything jumps out :)

Luckily it was a new save, not super bummed.
I just reverted and things seem normal now
Check your saves folder and see if it's still there. (If you use Steam's cloud sync, I'd turn it off.) Sometimes a problem saving can get saves stuck as renamed.
That would be a pretty critical issue for basically a foundation of modding - would you mind zipping your Mods and saves folders and uploading them here?
(Even if you'd rather not, logs are still helpful.)

I'm not great at coding! Which is why XNB was always so much easier for me, especially when I just wanted to alter the graphics of something... I do think Smapi is a much better way to mod as a user, but it does require a little coding last check
You can make mods using content patcher! No coding needed
@cunning raft Nexus has no clue what you have actually installed on your PC and just lists the requirements every time you go to download anything, just click OK or whatever the button says
Just a content.json file with some entries labelling which images and stuff in your mod to use to replace or edit the images or data in the game files

Should be doable also with Content Patcher. You can change the display name which is what shows up everywhere, but the underlying name in the game code stays the same.
I know there was a point on the Chucklefish forums where names were a hard thing to change but I think that was in XNB days

Anyone know by chance if DNPCC from Longevity is compatible with Seasonal Villager Outfits?
Like you click Download on the files page, Nexus pops up a thing saying "make sure you have these files installed" that has a second download button on it, you have to click that to go to the screen that asks you if you want free or paid downloads
I did that, then I downloaded SMAPI, tried to download mods again but it says the same thing.
I thought not so I tried to just remove DNPCC from the file but it broke my game xD
longevity is barely compatible with plain stardew and definitely not compatible with SVO

(For mods in general trying to remove features by removing files isn't a good bet though - if the features are optional they'll usually have a configuration file you can edit in notepad.)
You can turn off the various Longevity features but I don't believe they work on custom crops. Not sure about the latest update.

@cunning raft When mods have additional requirements, it pops up a window telling you what they are, and then there should be a download button on that window that lets you get the file. It might be a few clicks away with the whole premium deal and Nexus, but basically Nexus has no idea what you have installed like Wingheart said, it's just telling you what's required ahead of time :)

(Make sure you're using the manual download and not the mod manager download!)

I don't know what's causing all your errors, you have a lot of them. Spacecore ones are normal for client, you have a lot of mod updates to do that you could try, and for MP error logs it's helpful to have the host's as well @dire fractal

and i had paint.net open and was making a screenshot set with the download buttons for SVE highlighted (like going through the process and highlighting the buttons in case Nexus was being dumb and obscuring them)
Did you click the orange Download button in that window, Shark?
Directly under where it says SMAPI in that screenshot, it says Download. That is the download link for the mod you are trying to download.

Personally I prefer edits for different situations like Seasonal Villager Outfits.
Just depends, Sugar - I like to see people's different styles, but at the same time am so spoiled by advanced features from stuff like SVO that it's hard for redraws to complete because so much work :\

SVE consists almost entirely of content packs for various frameworks, so there isn't a lot of programming involved at all. There is a SMAPI component but all the heavy lifting is content. That said, it is a lot of content, so yeah.
an NPC is a content patcher pack, generally! often with a TMXL pack to add their home

You can make an NPC using content patcher. There's an overview of the kinds of edits you need to make here https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Modding:NPC_data, a template here https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/3446 (Although I'd personally just look at a functioning NPC as to me it's easier to start with something that runs), and if you're on Windows a creator here https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/4701 (though you're going to need to learn what it's doing for you under the hood at some point). They're a pretty big project that have a lot of moving parts, though.
Feel free to ask in #making-mods-general if you get stuck, but definitely make sure you check out the resources, existing mods, unpacked vanilla files, etc, because a lot goes into them that you'll have to muck around with!
Theres a heap of NPC creation mods. I'd recommend the template myself but there is an error in the NPCD for it.
I just find it confusing to start with something that doesn't actually (and isn't intended to) work, personally, so it's easier for me to recommend an existing NPC :)

Shiko for example overrides marriage dialogue and is deisgned for 1.6.
so my flower dance issue seems to have been caused by Stardew Valley Expanded

and i checked the patch summary, literally the only things patching the flower dance were my various npc mods adding their character to it

One last question, does anyone know if PPJA - Khadija's Recipe Shop would conflict with SVE? I don't know if SVE edits that stall at all. I only ask because I think PPJA - Khadija's Recipe Shopis needed for the PPJA version of Minervas harder CC bundles

I'm really happy they made Swim! I used the original proof of concept from Routine for ages and ages and hadn't even known it was taken down. You just pressed the key to jump in the water and again to jump out - it didn't adjust for obstacles or anything like that, just transitioned you from swimming on water tiles and back :)

It's so nice to be able to just walk off into water wherever, or wear your swim clothes if you want. I haven't even checked out the diving that much because I just like swimming really ๐

Well I think I figured out specifically what the issue was
It's an incompatibility between boarding house and sve
Boarding house even mentions it can cause issues at festivals with sve
It seems Sheila spawns in a bush that's not there in the vanilla map and the game doesn't like that and just crashes.
Can you do these steps to provide more info?
- Load your save and view the content that should be patched.
- Type
patch summarydirectly into the SMAPI window and press enter. - Upload your SMAPI log to https://smapi.io/log (see instructions on that page).
- Post the log link here.

so essentially the hotfix is remove sve's flower dance map temporarily and ask the boarding house dev to move sheila to another spot
I think moving them to another spot in general is probably futile on the author's part - there are ever more NPCs every day and if you move from one spot they'll just run into one occupied by another, etc. It's possible to strip out the festival spots and make them conditional on the mod, so that would be an option, but they might not want to bother with it. You can adjust the coordinates really easily in the Boarding House TMXL content.json - it will have a festivalSpots section that should have coordinates for Sheila that you can change.

I think it's a good thing to report if you search and no one has mentioned it, I just caution against considering it an obligation on the author's part when it's so easy to change to whatever coordinates you like :) It's totally possible to split off though, so I do think that would be the better option than just moving it period.

It's mentioned in the error message, so I downloaded it and tried it, then tried to look up the source and couldn't find one.
@tired brook it seems like if you have a lot of PFM mods (i have 68, some of which are very large) Lookup Anything's ability to look up PFM recipes stops being consistent? So some machines just...don't have listed recipes in-game. It's super weird.
Note that the recipes still work, like for example right now looking up the Smoker from Artisan Valley results in no Recipes section despite the fact that it has a fish in it and correctly displays that

Basically there's no warp out of Garden Vilalge shops and TMXL doesn't like that.
I uninstalled some hours ago and it worked fine, but the creator updated it an hour ago and then it started crashing

yup, i got willy in the mail for my first winter star in my current save. then it turned out to be robin during the actual feast, good thing I brought a universal loved gift. i haven't reached my second winter star yet, so we'll see

No, it's fuzzy. The resolution of the images are rather low to what an actual screenshot produces.
i think the bigger your farm, the lower the res it goes for the screenshot but not sure

I haven't noticed my screenshots be fuzzy, and I've used it on Capitalist Dream Farm (huge) as well as Farm Extended, Strawberry Fields Farm, and Ali's Flower Farm. The last 3 are not huge though.

Ohhh o: can you try setting up a rule in the config for a screenshot that is on a hotkey press, and then take a screenshot manually? For example, I have a weekly screenshot rule, and a separate rule for a screenshot on hotkey. I did this so if it was raining on the weekly screenshot, I could take one myself later in the week when it wasn't raining.

Yea mods don't go inside the Stardew Valley > Content folder, they go in Stardew Valley > Mods (correction: this is the case in Windows, it's different for Mac! )
Ok, looks like that's not the same path SMAPI is pulling from, it's pulling from /Users/jamestrefry 1/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Stardew Valley/Contents/MacOS/Mods
So it looks like that's where Mods go on Mac o: (based on the wiki guide I linked)
You have your mods in the location they'd need to be for Windows. If you move them to the path I mentioned, which I got from your SMAPI log, they should be loaded

Can you see if there is a folder called MacOS in your Stardew Valley > Contents folder? If so, does the MacOS folder have a Mods folder inside it?
INTERESTING ok can you search in your folders for SaveBackup, or ConsoleCommands, and see where those folders are? Those are the 2 mods SMAPI is loading o.o
Wait nvm I can read, they're in there. I'm stumped then, I don't know why SMAPI is loading Console Commands and Save Backup, but not the other mods in there. Hopefully someone else in the chat can help

Unlikely. Json Assets and SpaceCore get that warning because they both use harmony to edit came code. But both of those mods are by pretty savvy modders and are widely used. They don't usually cause crashes

@royal arrow @fair vessel It didn't have to do with Content Patcher. I think the Farm.tbin in IF2R was looking for a file called "spring_z_extras.png" in the same directory that it was contained. A pretty janky solution I found was to copy the "spring_extras.png" from the sbv folder and pasted it into the Farm.tbin folder and named it "spring_z_extras.png". Seems to work now, but idk if it'll get mad at me again when the season changes
yeaaaa I know you found a janky way to solve it but I don't think that's a long term solution o.o it should be pulling from the right place, and I think there might be a way to fix it in Tiled but I'm not an expert (mouse totally is >_>)

If you're going to copy them over, make sure you do all of them (not just spring). I'm not sure if it will be bug free after that, but the main issue is definitely the tilesheets being loaded by SVE, which is not installed.

For the majority of its life it depended on SVE, and then for this very short window it was independent... and then a couple months or so ago SVE had to change up how custom tilesheets are referenced in order for other mods to be able to properly edit them (for patches, recolors, and stuff like that, or other smol edits), which means referring to the parent mod again.
IF2R doesn't have a dependency in its manifest though, does it?
Since it did work for awhile, I'm guessing it will probably work with those tilesheets, but y'know, I dunno :D

@jovial grove this sounds more like a #stardew-valley issue, if you're low level at fishing, you'll catch a lot of trash. At higher levels you'll catch fish more. Or are you saying you're catching a lot of trash even at high fishing skill levels?

@jovial grove the other thing that helps is casting your bobber far away from the land/docks. If you do short casts you'll get more trash.

Yeah it was a fair question I think; it could have been a mod causing such an issue (unlikely though unless you have mods that say they affect fishing)

@jovial grove sorry! but as for your problem with fishing junk, i think lenne can help you better. my not-so-expert opinion is that it might have something to do with teh's fishing haul but that mod wasn't even loaded in your game

@dire fractal i'm stumped. based on your log, you shouldn't have any errors with ifr2's map. the only cp errors you have is about multiple mods trying to load animal skins, so it's not related to it. can you try removing the medieval sve and reload the game again just to check?

good! A good practice when you're having issues is checking if you have updates available for your mods, sometimes the randomest mods cause issues you don't expect ๐

When you add a dependency for this problem, you would open up the manifest.json for anything editing the same file (houses in this case), and look for that mod's UniqueID, then put that in as a dependency, not just Elle's :)

when you last updated SVE, did you delete all the previous folders, and then installed the new ones? the folder structure has changed a lot with every version
first time installing sve so there was no previous stuff

as a side note, it looks like you also tried to use some XNB mods, "Content" and "Harvey Mod."
Those are outdated and not recommended, because they directly replace game files and are difficult to uninstall (also less likely to be compatible with other mods). I recommend removing those folders and looking for the mods you wanted to use on https://smapi.io/xnb to see if there are Content Patcher (CP) alternatives you can use instead

@royal arrow This is the IF2R json. It's just making sure that IF2R's edit of the greenhouse is the last to apply, since it doesn't move it, just erases it. If something edits it after it's erased, it becomes visible again.
Troubles with recolors and SVE should not really be conflicts so much as custom tilesheets of SVE that just need to be colored to match. This can be done from a separate mod targeting SVE's files (much like Gwen's does), though some recolor authors may not want another mod making anything to match. I think it's mainly interior tiles that clash, but I'm not sure. (So in Starblue for example you could turn those off to not see a mismatch, otherwise you'd need to recolor the new tiles to match Starblue's interior edits.)
AFAIK SVE doesn't do any recoloring of vanilla assets other than IF2R erasing the greenhouse.

firstly you'll need JsonAssets, which is the framework that lets people add more crops
then you can get stuff like the PPJA packs, or Revenant's Crops, or the Tropical Farm pack!

Just downloaded it to try it and it seemed to load for me, with latest SVE and SMAPI (though admittedly a lot of other stuff of date since on Windows computer). Since it was an update, the only thing I can think of is to try completely deleting it again and make sure to wipe this folder StardewValleyExpanded and try again
The SMAPI portion isn't open source, so not a lot of poking around to be done there.
No, the bulk of SVE is in content packs. The SMAPI portion is relatively small, so I'm not sure of the impact not running it would have. Flash would be the best person to ask.

So I have 187 errors for Json Assets that are some variant of [Json Assets] Failed in CanBeTrashed_Postfix for StardewValley.Object and then the object. The weird thing is that all the objects listed are vanilla objects. Also not sure if it's related but JA shirts are showing up as corrupted, the spritesheets are likely being edited wrong

I'm guessing it has a sprite for the whole thing built in to be facing right and then just flips it if you're facing left
so the proper way to do that would be to make one sprite for the tractor and one for the text

seems like you have multiple copies of the sve npcs, check your files again to make sure you don't have duplicates
@grim rose The SVE npc folders shouldn't be there any more at all! Flash changed the file structure of SVE some time ago and users were prompted to remove all of the old folders before installing the new version. You haven't done this, so you're trying to run 2 incompatible versions of SVE.
@viscid pond OHH that makes sense! Normally when I update mods I delete all previous folders that have the same names as the new ones, I guess it didn't cross my mind bc there wasn't any duplicate folders. I will delete all the SVE NPC's, hopefully it works! Thank you ๐

@thin oracle other people have had this issue but they weren't clear on how they fixed it, so I have a couple of questions for you:
- is there another SMAPI console window (black box) in the background? If so, make sure you close it
- did you extract/unzip the SMAPI installer folder before you ran the bat file? You can't run the installer from within the zip file
- are you running the bat file as an administrator, or regular user? There's different results depending on which route you go
Can you provide a screenshot of your unzipped folder, and which file you're running? (trying to rule out something)

The readme has instructions for installing manually, if you need to do that, though if something interferes with the installer it seems like even odds it will come up with SMAPI ๐
Security software occasionally has it out for SMAPI then o: is it because technically it's a hack, ooooh (~'-')~ ? (I know Skyrim's script extender, SKSE, sometimes has issues with security software for that reason)

Some antiviruses will remove executables they find suspicious - in SMAPI's case maybe because unsigned or not in their DB
You can run into issues with aggressive scans in game locking files while SMAPI is using them, too, or not liking dlls and quarantining them...
I mean, in fairness it's attaching itself to a legitimate process in order to run arbitrary code, so it shares certain similarities with things they are trying to protect you from :) ( @royal arrow )

@pale cradle I'm sure people have done it privately to share in MP games with friends for example, but since you can't redistribute other people's mods like that, anything more accessible would need to be more like an installer that legitimately downloads local versions of all the mods in question and just installs them for you. ModDrop supports mod lists that work like this, but I don't know if anyone has made any. Wabbajack does this for Vortex, too.
In either case with SMAPI handling stuff like load order and patches for other mods not being too common, I'm not sure it's a huge step up from just downloading them and putting them in the folder yourself :)
CJB doesn't add features to the clock, yeah, it just gives you cheats you can turn on or off or raise skill/heart levels and such !
