I just realized the main reason I make fake texts for Stardew Valley (besides them being about the best I can do in terms of "art") is because it's the only game I can think of with character customization set in a time period where the characters could have cell phones without it seeming anachronistic.

I could even excuse the Wizard texting as him using magic to communicate with the farmer and it being picked up as texts on his/her phone (similar to, say, Carbuncle in FFXV)

Im not an expert but low opacity and build. I usually use gold shades and highlight sections If you wanna do stuff like Windows, would recommend playing around with Glow if procreate has that - using square objects to simulate windows or something the light shines through and blurring the edges slightly - but again low opacity and Build

I'd say in the ones above, I'd experiment with instead of lightening existing colours, trying out how different lights will change existing skin

But I also tend to do much darker tones

Example - the blurry start (discord Downloads hates me) and the rough draft - building the light and where it shines? I suppose - but I find it's more about the shadows than the light itself. What is dark matters more than what is light imo

Finally done with my Star Wars OC! Ps. The translation from Arubesh (Star Wars language) to English “Clone Armor? But how could clones be here”

The light follows the curves of the face. As seen here. This is using very simplistic lighting, I haven’t gone into very much detail with how shadows and light would be effected by the facial structure. But as you can see, there is a shadow on anything obstructed from the light. So there is shadow below the jawline, shadow on the bottom/back of the hair, and behind the ear. There is also a smaller amounts of shadow underneath and on the side of the glasses lenses opposite of the light source, below the nose, below the lip, and below the hair bordering his face. The shadow helps define depth as seen on the lip and borders of the hair, as well as to convey light. (The whole nose is slightly shaded, but that’s just a bit of “blush” because it’s the way I designed my characters nose)

I'd honestly say to have an experiment with your own face. Take a picture, see how the colour changes, where the dips and almost folds of the face are

If you want to more easily see the extremes, stand in front of a window, facing sideways so only one half of your face is properly lit. It will help you really see the differences between the shadows and light, and the different shapes it creates.

That reminds me, when doing shadow and lighting, you don’t have to do just lighter a darker form of the colors you already have. Shadows can also be conveyed with cool colors like blues and greens, purples, and light can be conveyed with warmer colors like red, orange, yellow etc. it just depends on your light source, and the style really.

Yeah. I remember one of my friends took a look at some of my artwork I was proud of and immediately said “that looks a lot like another style I’ve seen someone use” and I replied just like “well, I came up with this from scratch, so any resemblance is purely coincidental, this one is still my style” and he was persistent continuing to say “nooo, that’s someone else’s style” i don’t think they know much about art, and I don’t think they know they are being rude, but y’know. Whatever. Another time I showed them a graphite self portrait I took months to make for school, and they immediately said “that doesn’t look like you” and proceeded to point out details that did, in fact, look like me, I literally drew it based off of a detailed photograph of my face, square by square style. So yeah… I think sometimes people don’t realize the work/effort, and the creativity that goes into art.

Moral of the story some artists don’t like it when you compare their art to someone else’s/their characters. And some do.

In #pixelart our smallest element is a SINGLE pixel.
More pixels together form a cluster.
Single pixels ALWAYS can be used as buffers.
Just not using single pixels won't improve the handling of shape variation in a piece.
Bad shape language/readability is caused by other problems

no, it definitely takes time. learning the basics takes a long time but at some point it just clicks and you understand where to actually use them

i was told never to use black or white or dithering for a long time because i did terraria art and as soon as i moved on from that things got much better

for example now that ive actually tried to learn dithering, its a huge part of my work and makes things much much easier

it looks really flat and not 3d at all, if that's what you're going for then you achieved it but if it's not i'd recommend giving more curvature to the top of the skull above the eyes and removing the lowered opacity lighting you've got on the front and replacing it with hand drawn lighting for more accuracy- for example in this lighting the eye sockets and teeth lining should probably still be dark like the lining colour in the shadows, not lighter (im only assuming that's what you did based on how it looks but if it's not i guess you could just be more careful about the lights and shadows on the front)
comparing it to the reference the jaw sort of goes up instead of lining up with the back of the skull which takes away from the "3d-ness" like i mentioned before because it's a warped perspective
same with the part above the teeth, should be more curved instead of straight if you want it to look more accurate

remember, not all pixels need to be a different color. having clusters of the same color won't make your work look flat.

You think the patterns are too much? For a lot of them, I tried to base them off the real gourd's texture and patterns. If I make the outlines darker and the shading smoother, maybe it'll be more clear what's supposed to be a pattern and what's not. Thanks!

When making pixel art, you shouldn't try and capture every single detail unless you're working at a large scale. On a smaller scale, it's more about getting the general idea of something, rather than every tiny detail. The official artwork in stardew Valley is a great example, pumpkins in real life have a ton of tiny texture and ridges, but the stardew valley pumpkins look completely smooth.

bok choy is a very round plant with leaves on on the top of it if that makes sense - if you want it to be accurate try to use references! otherwise Id say everything else looks wonderful

The game handles objects in 16x16 grid, or for bigger objects it will be 16x32, 64x64 etc... You can draw your changes freely within the vanilla item borders, but if you draw aside it, it will be cut when you playing the game

Another study involving arcane. This time I didn't use colour cause I didn't feel like it (traced the figure since I couldn't get it on my own). Just felt like being ✨blendy✨

Sometimes the colours in the show are a bit overwhelming to try and emulate so in order to get the feel for the style I'll probably work in greyscale more often

One think I have learned is that the shadows on the nose kinda resemble a kitty cat! So now I've kinda got a better handle on front and 3/4s facing noses
