2. decent icing recipe, stand mixer whipping in lots of air makes it soft to work with and pipe.
3. 1M Wilton star tip is pretty much all you need? I used that for fancy and a non serrated butter knife for the base.

ta also butter temperature is important, its 24-25C in my flat today and that cake is a little on the melty-too soft side, if you can have a good stable 19C room temperature it won't be too melty greasy but it'll be soft enough to beat and whip up soft. Not using too much confectioner's sugar/icing sugar too so it doesnt become too stiff. it's a lot about consistency.

I learned from reading the leaflet that comes with the Wilton kits as a kid. All that info is pretty good.

Instead of drawing the structure of a face, I start with shaping out areas on the face with different light values

Here's a thing I did a month ago

Because it's practice and more of a learning experience, I trace out the shapes on the reference itself.

I don't do realism often but I did it again to show you what I mean

It's really effective for learning.
