all I know is

when I unlock the mines on day 5 or whatever and get the copper needed

if I don't have enough time to smelt them all I can walk into his shop and plop down a furance next to the counter and keep smelting and then make him upgrade my tool even when the door's technically closed for entering

i've never bothered to check exactly how late I can get away with it and still have it work

but it's very definitely closed and without him at the desk anymore

frog is a cutie but i don't like my loot being eaten

and special mobs tend to survive just long enough for frog to go off cd and eat them before u can kill them
