no never mind I just forgot I had a filter on from a while ago XD

lethal walrus
#

😭

dusty pollen
#

have you reloaded? it doesn't start listening to requests until you reload the page with the network tab open

#

oh yup you searched for files SBVLmaoDog

hushed raven
#

I did, multiple times, I just didn't realise the filter at the top is persistant across web pages and restarts XD that has been there for a while

lethal walrus
#

it works on mobile!

#

i dont know why its not showing the referrer for my desktop

#

id guess its bc its the same ip but.. its not meant to be tracking?

#

why does it think me and atlas are on laptops

hushed raven
#

aww no sitemap for my curious perusing XD

lethal walrus
#

this is so easy to add to things

#

its on alts.best now too :D

#

i wonder if i go to a site from the discord app does it send a referer

#

the answer is no

hushed raven
#

not by the URL

#

Ahhh

#

I love the single header ontop of alts.best XD it is true, you have so many XD

lethal walrus
#

the header doesnt work for me on mobile though for some reason

#

oh the header margin is too big

hushed raven
#

works fine on mine, you're the outlier here

lethal walrus
#

it wdoesnt even work in ctrl+shift+m

#

i mean that you cant click it

hushed raven
#

I can click it XD

#

but I can't on desktop

#

well no I did, but it's stopped working now

lethal walrus
hushed raven
#

Oh it's a tiny sliver above that can be clicked, working as intended, totally XD

lethal walrus
#

its now margin and not padding and it works perfectly for me and looks identical

#

:( redness on my vercel analytics

lethal walrus
#

and the link works on mobile now yay

lethal walrus
#

because donuts inc said it should be

hushed raven
lethal walrus
#

.. or maybe identity digital?

lethal walrus
#

because it looks like the referrer is com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox

hushed raven
#

Ahhhh ye it's the little pill wdiget on my homescreen

lethal walrus
#

ah yeah that makes sense

hushed raven
#

I didn't know that had a referrer, interesting

lethal walrus
#

mhm

long verge
lethal walrus
#

why is vscode angy

#

anyway paste.sarl has analytics too now

hushed raven
#

Oh I got rid of the bottom bar on that page and now don't know what the other two buttons do XD

lethal walrus
#

yes you have to remove the hash from the url to fix that

hushed raven
#

actually is paste.sarl supposed to do something? I imagine a pastebin like thing but it doesn't want to type

lethal walrus
hushed raven
#

I pressed all the buttons so I assume so, none of them have any hover context so I have no clue what they mean XD

lethal walrus
#

fair

hushed raven
#

Ahhhh okay gotcha

little furnace
#

@lethal walrus The size is off and I hate it

lethal walrus
#

i know and i dont know why it does that

little furnace
#

I'll try to analyze it.

hushed raven
#

I'm guessing the iframe isn't resizing correctly and you should fingle the fangle to get the jangle to flangle, that's the solution 100%

lethal walrus
little furnace
#

I mean, the iFrame is obviously the reason because replacing it with an image fixes it.

lethal walrus
#

mhm

little furnace
#

Okay, the issue is that an iFrame is a sandbox and there are historic expectations to it. The content you embed will be rendered at its native size no matter what. You can scale it using transform: scale(), but that isn't dynamic.

#

You can build an observer that resizes it automatically.

lethal walrus
#

hthmhpmhgphmfhmgfhkm

#

i could definitely do some cursed javascript for that actually

safe dragon
lethal walrus
#

okay why do they scale SLIGHTLY differently

#

meh theyre the same to 3 decimals usually thats good enough

#

ill just average it and if you can see subpixels on your phone for some reason, no you can't lmao

hushed raven
#

free advertising, nice one XD

lethal walrus
#

okay this is impossible to do

#

its just slightly off and i dont want to deal with it anymore

safe dragon
#

Are there relational database engines other than sqlite that use a single file as the storage medium...

little furnace
#

Every database, you just need to zip the files :P

I like the convenience of having a simple file as a database but I'm not particularly fond of sqlite itself

Jane Doe is such a profilic researcherhc_pensive

#

my most positive interpretation of this is that these people would've probably doctored their research papers regardless and this just makes them easier to catch

sand frost
#

My cynical take (echoed by some comments in the thread) is that ML as a field is largely rotten from a standards and rigor perspective

#

They do have some interesting results, but they can rarely explain them, and the interesting results are coming from a process that is also silently generating reams of nonsense (which of course never gets published)

#

People who care about rigor stay out of ML and into TCS (or other adjacent fields), compounding the problem

dusty pollen
#

I don't fully agree with you there but I do partially agree

the black-box nature of ML is a massive problem but there is rigor on the mathematical side at least

sand frost
#

In my experience, the rigor is patched together long after the fact, if there is any

#

I admit my experience with ML as a field also included professional misconduct not relevant to the theory, perhaps biasing me

dusty pollen
#

and also the mathematical side has zero understanding of the actual applications of the research what else is new

#

I think it's a field currently haunted by being at the peak of the hype cycle

sand frost
#

There’s too much money/hype, and it causes churn in the academic side

dusty pollen
#

and there's, as always, no money in replication/systematic reviews

sand frost
#

I saw professors leave for hedge funds and teach really poorly

#

(This wasn’t even the misconduct, even though I highly disapprove of bad teaching!)

dusty pollen
#

and tbh with how a lot of unis treat junior teaching staff, I can't even blame them for leaving

#

(senior teaching staff is a different problem ofc)

sand frost
#

People getting hired all across academia with weaker skills and weaker care for ethics because ā€œthey do ML! We need ML!ā€

sand frost
#

They didn’t have teaching profs in that dept, I believe

dusty pollen
#

my uni's allergy to practical applications of research kind of saved me in this regard lmao

#

I barely heard the term chatgpt throughout

sand frost
#

I was coming at it from the practical applications side (modeling engineering problems), so I at least had basic physics/experimental data as ground truth and replicability sources

#

This stuff that I hated I saw from classes I was taking

#

I was at a very big uni for grad school, so I saw a lot of different stuff

#

I didn’t hear a lot about chatgpt, but there was a lot of buzz about ML more broadly

#

I think a lot of it pressed my ā€œget upsetā€ buttons: the poor justifications in a mathematical sense, the poor teaching standards, and the poor ethical standards

#

A perfect trifecta of me not respecting their work

For me the most interesting thing was that I tried the sauna today. It's pretty convenient to have one on the patio. But it didn't really feel that good yet. Need to wait a bit more until the weather is better.

cinder karma
#

My gym has a sauna but I get bored

little furnace
#

I don't really like using one on my own. Company is better because you can chat. But having someone make it more intense by pouring water on the stones and fawning the hot air to you is even better.

cinder karma
#

So i need to make more gym friends lol

little furnace
#

That's an idea. Though in Finland you usually chat with strangers. Which is the only opportunity for them to chat at all, because they otherwise don't say a word.

errant comet
#

i love winter saunas

#

Haven't had one this winter sadly

little furnace
#

I prefer them in summer. If you heat it up to the point that it exhausts your body, then totally kill any sense of temperatur by dipping into a cold pool, you will survive any heat for the next few hours.

errant comet
#

Winter russian saunas are kinda different in my experience, tho I was in Finnish and Turkish saunas as well

#

I really like the temp change

#

From -20 to 80

#

And the whole winter vibe around it

#

Too bad I won't be able to experience it again in a while

little furnace
#

I only really know German ones, which are a mix of Finish and Russian but less casual, unfortunately.

cinder karma
#

I have no clue the difference

little furnace
#

Finish are hotter and dryer, Russian are less hot and more humid. In both you sometimes beat each other with bundles of oak or birch whisks to encourage circulation, but that's only occasional in Finish while standard in Russian. Russian saunas are also a bit more communal and lively, while Finish public saunas are a bit more quiet and meditative, especially public ones.

cinder karma
#

There are no beatings in a gym sauna in the US

#

I do see people take their phones in (yikes)

#

People go in wearing clothes

little furnace
#

That sounds like a weird sauna. You wouldn't want that in either a Finish or Russian one. Both are too hot to hold a phone or even wear clothes.

errant comet
#

My sauna wasn't public thankfully, it was my grandparents they built themselves

cinder karma
#

Clothes seems okay because we arent European

errant comet
#

I can't imagine 100° in Russian sauna

#

😭

#

That would be pretty much boiling alive

#

Well maybe not boiling but steamed surely

#

And for the Finnish ones I think I seen something like 110 even?

Not sure butt it was way higher than I imagined

#

That advertising is hilarious.

safe dragon
#

I can see my dad legimitately buying it

#

his current car is like 15 years old

#

counting the time the previous owner had it at least

little furnace
#

That's not that old for a car though. The one I inherited from my aunt turned 32 this year.

safe dragon
#

fair I suppose

#

ultimately depends how long the thing lasts

#

it's a toyota so they tend to do well in that regard

little furnace
#

Yeah, Toyotas barely break in a conventional way.

hardy jewel
#

I don't think I've ever sat in a car that's less than 15 years old

little furnace
#

I have. We have a lot of carsharing here, and I occasionally use that when public transport wouldn't be viable (I don't want to use the old car too much), and all of the cars are at most three years old.
One car didn't have any radio or entertainment system at all, just a phone holder and NFC data sharing.

hardy jewel
#

That makes sense, I don't think we have anything like that here that's popular. Or Uber. Or public transport...

#

The car scene here when I was growing up was in general just super old, even for the people who weren't dirt poor

#

for one of my birthdays as a kid I asked to sit in a modern car to see what it was like and no one granted me that wish SDVpufferpensive smh

little furnace
#

Honestly, it's not too different just sitting inside one, but driving is usually more comfortable. For manual cars the clutch is more forgiving, for automatic cars the system is better and for EVs it's inherently super smooth.

safe dragon
#

I have quite a few colleagues who replace their car if it's like 4 years old

actually there is not in between. Either it's a colleague who just drives a vehicle till it stops working or it's someone who keeps up to date on new car releases and gets a new car every few years

cinder karma

I guarentee the actual leaderboard solves don't look so...silly

crystal wren

Yeah, but where's the fun in that?

fleet wren
#

love the wacky intermediary molecules

safe dragon

and latency improvements maybe

fleet wren
safe dragon
#

there might be reason to believe that the tech valve teased with the steam frame is AV2 stuff

#

Multi View Video Coding (MVC, also known as MVC 3D) is a stereoscopic video coding standard for video compression that allows for encoding video sequences captured simultaneously from multiple camera angles in a single video stream. It uses the 2D plus Delta method and it is an amendment to the H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) video compression standard, dev...

fleet wren
#

and you can see weird stuff in the places that the seams join up
-# I also have little idea how video encoding work though

safe dragon
#

arcane witchcraft is mostly how

#

lmao wtf

cinder karma
#

steam...frame...2?

safe dragon
#

the steam frame hasn't even come out yet and they were asking if they should wait for the second one a year ago

cinder karma
#

that's a locomotive

errant comet
#

by the time I get enough money I think steam frame 3 will be around already

safe dragon
#

they don't do 3s

crystal wren
#

The answer is yes, you should. Give me a better chance.

errant comet
#

exactly

safe dragon
#

I kinda wonder if the steam frame stuff is actually part of av2

cinder karma
#

what's the steam frame 2?

safe dragon
#

like foveated streaming

crystal wren
#

You think maybe the streaming stuff uses AV2?

safe dragon
#

Probably not? If anything maybe just a custom extension to AV1

#

it'd be a bit early to rely on tech that has never even really been tested yet

crystal wren
#

I actually don't know what it uses for the streaming... AV1 could be iffy if you just happen to not have hardware encoding support for it.

safe dragon
#

presumably it would do direct streaming to the headset and that does the decoding

#

idk

crystal wren
#

Yeah, but it still has to be encoded to before it gets transmitted, and that's where the pain would be.

safe dragon
#

I guess that doesn't really avoid the problem yeah

#

they have to be doing the foveated rendering somehow

#

and I don't think that's part of any existing video spec

#

not an open one anyway

cinder karma
#

first bird to the worm defines teh spec

safe dragon
#

In 2025, Valve announced the upcoming Steam Frame headset, which applies a variation of the technique known as "foveated streaming" for wireless streaming from a PC to the headset; the method similarly uses variance in bit rate, and is performed at the encoder level rather than the software level

#

at the encoder level...

#

idk man we'll see

#

I don't care about VR anyway

#

I am very curious about AV2 however

cinder karma
#

if you don't care about vr why care about av3

#

2

safe dragon
#

cause I have a media server and better video codecs means I can store more stuff on the same amount of storage space

#

with how expensive storage has now become that is a lot more relevant than it once was

hushed raven
#

so does foveated mean eye tracker? theres fixed foveated rendering which is the same as all headsets do (right?) but the wording seems its more "high tech"?

cinder karma
#

my guess from just the defintion of "foveated" they track where u are looking so best resolution is limited to just small space

safe dragon
#

strictly speaking foveated just means varying the resolution of the image by area. In practice making the parts that are actually looked at higher resolution

hushed raven
#

hopefully the eye tracking can also be exposed further for other software at the same time

safe dragon
#

valve's version is definitely the eye tracking variety

#

same as most fancy new ones

hushed raven
#

I have a feeling it may make be feel a bit ill when using it, I can't image it not adding some latency

crystal wren
#

So where you're looking gets the most bits, elsewhere not so much... so that (hopefully) wireless streaming is actually not terrible.

safe dragon
#

the idea is the same I suppose. Just reduce the amount of data used for the areas you don't really see very well

#

when will my TV track my eyes to maximize fidelity for the section of the television I am focused on

hushed raven
#

in my experience wireless streaming being terrible seems to be entirely centered around SteamVR itself, ALVR, WiVRn, etc I have had zero issues with wireless, no lag or dropped frames at all

cinder karma
#

what kinda timescales are they talking about

safe dragon
#

what do you mean

#

the goal here is that it's humanly imperceptible that they're doing this trick

cinder karma
#

like, how fast is the round-trip "track eyes -> send eye position -> update bitrate changes -> send data back"

#

how fast is this

safe dragon
#

idk, fast enough that a human can't tell

#

there's probably a paper on it somewhere

#

we shall see I suppose

#

I have my controller so the rest can burn it's ok

crystal wren
#

I don't have my email yet...

cinder karma

I;m not in the target population

This is my reservation confirmation email.

safe dragon

the VR headset and mini pc

#

I don't want em

hushed raven
#

the mini PC i'm not interested in, but I am interested in the headset, less because "ooo yes better experience" but more for the tech within

safe dragon
#

ok yes I am interested in the tech

#

tech is cool

errant comet
#

is mini pc something particular or just a small pc

safe dragon
#

especially when it's not ruined by 2 million patents

safe dragon
#

more intended to be connected to a TV than at a desk but fine at both

hushed raven
#

ye somewhat marketed as a console but with the full use of a PC behind it, roughly a modded xbox without the need to mod it

safe dragon
#

and my linux experience improves from it despite needing to do nothing

#

šŸ™

#

speaking of random linux things improving

#

the sway window manager just released HDR support

#

perhaps within a year or so I will actually have motivation to get an HDR capable display

safe dragon
#

me neither

#

I do have a bunch of HDR movies on my media server

#

but my TV is 17 years old so it does not support it

#

and my monitors don't either

#

supposedly my phone maybe does but idk if it does, it has never actually worked

#

google once offhand mentioned hdr support I think but it's not in any spec sheet

#

not like it matters much. An HDR experience on a tiny ass phone screen wouldn't really be an improvement anyway

errant comet
#

whats hdr

#

sounds like some disorder tbh 😭

safe dragon
#

HDR as a term is used for a lot of things but in this case it's essentially a technology for displays/video to display a wider range of different brightness values, colors, contrast etc

#

make the bright parts of a scene like in the sun actually look brighter and the dark parts look darker, perhaps even adjust based on the scene on screen at that moment

#

really "HDR" just means high dynamic range as opposed to SDR aka standard dynamic range

#

phones love to also use the term HDR for photography which in that case basically means a technique that allows you to take photos of a scene with both very bright sections and very dark sections without any of it being under or overexposed

fleet wren
#

if you have a modern flagship phone you can lookup "HDR emojis" and flashbang yourself

safe dragon
#

I don't so I'm safe

crystal wren
#

Discord still hasn't blessed us with HDR white backgrounds. SDVpufferwaaah

safe dragon
#

a shame

errant comet
#

a shame light theme bg still isnt FFFFFF

only fbfbfb

hushed raven
#

wtf internet??? whyyyyy

#

it could also be nexus, but that throttles at 1.5MB not 1 KB

errant comet
#

its nexus

#

hates me sometimes too

when I use some vpn for discord

hushed raven

I wish it would download stuff better, theres load of mod I want to download for other games and it just takes so so long SMCPufferWaah

Just fyi

welp, sorry my library of 2k games, it has been declared I'm not allowed to play you XD

# cinder karma like, how fast is the round-trip "track eyes -> send eye position -> update bitr...

Not sure about for encoding, but in a game when positioning the camera for the headset, you absolutely need to do some predictive stuff based on a "seconds to photons" value. https://github.com/ValveSoftware/openvr/wiki/IVRSystem::GetDeviceToAbsoluteTrackingPose

I skipped that when I first started working on stardewVR, and I got motion sick pretty quickly without it.

hm. you know discord I'm pretty sure that's not actually the current date

steel kraken
#

Ah yeah you get that if you do number of nanoseconds since 1970 instead of milliseconds, or Milliseconds instead of seconds

#

JS Date objects does milliseconds, so making it nanosecond get this exact behaviour

#

I do have a work system that does use nanosecond timestamps
