hah, you think we care about snapshots? its like saying you dont push to main in your company
and your .env along with it
stability is in the hands of the developer
jk yeah i didnt know u can snapshot sims tho
in theory I'm sure
i took a live snapshot of windows 95
i resumed it this week, on the vm
We do have snapshots but I dont know if Elizabeth has them
whos elizabeth
sorry im not big dev so i dont know much about the internals of stardew
occasional fixes
oh
Elizabeth is a mechanical engineer. I'm an electrical engineer
When we talk sims we talk work sims
dw i understand now
wow ur too smart for me
I'm a software engineer
yayy!
let's force GTK on all apps for linux by tomorrow
but I write software for electrical engineers does that count
I've never had an opinion on a file manager
No haha
rough...
I also write software for hardware engineers!
windows explorer gets the job done
They would crash either because they ran out of memory or because the simulation was bad or because the computer lost power
The simulations also aren’t valid if they don’t finish
Or at least not a complete data point
I can set up in memory checkpoints to restart but the sim machines are Big
am i the only person who is a software engineer but sucks at math
i mean my title doesnt reflect my role at all, but i work with building software (native, like qt/gtk, no electron)
but its for new systems and legacy like windows 95...idk what that would be called, the title given to me is extremely generic
i can update, i choose not to, I dont recommend, too many security vulnerabilities
And are like intel xeon
Anyways my options are "install a Linux variant" or buy a new laptop
And I'm not buying a new laptop lol
go with cachy os
or debian
if debian is somehow laggy on an i5
then go cachy
framework laptop 13 pro
It ran Ubuntu fine, Ubuntu just broke for other reasons
hey, are you feeling generous today?
i bet you are!
feeling like mrbeast?
im sure you are!!
donate pls
Lol, bug they haven't fixed for a decade
I haven't tried Cachy, but I think it's a solid bet, or Endeavour
endeavour os is a bit useless nowadays, i recommended it before cachy existed, cachy is endeavour os but more optimized and more desktop environments
i dont discredit them
but cachy came out and its a better alternative
endeavour is just vanilla arch with a nice installer, it's very close to what regular arch ships
yeah
Crumble, I tried the Haskell tiling windows manager once when i was peer pressured into it
That lasted about three days before I gave up on memorizing keybinds lol
Nyarch Linux is a Linux distribution based on Arch Linux that aims to give the best linux experience to weebs.
here u go
xmonad
mmm
I wanted to be cool and I wasn't :(
Anyways can I sell you on pretty chemistry game :P
whats that?
never
Opus. The game this channel was playing last week
i dont understand it
factorio already hurts my brain
ive also failed science
and almost math one time
Factorio is much more complicated. I think. At least of you want to optimize everything.
yeah, it is
showed my project to a friend with 800 hours in it, they hated me
i had all these hands sending items to another hand, to another hand
and another hand, that went back, went forward
and finally made it to a machine, 0 conveyer belts
is that good? nope
did i do it anyways? yes
did i learn from my mistakes? no
I've never played factorial
I feel like you will like Opus. You just need to find solutions, optimizing them is optional.
i'm a big fan of opus. truly amazing compression ratio. very convenient format
....can I sell you on pretty chemistry game?
i legit need to decide on an audio format to standardize all my stuff to
flac/opus
idk if I've ever seen a .opus file ever
i think all my music is either .mp3 or, if they were feeling fancy, .m4a
afaik opus files still use the .ogg container format (also used for vorbis, of course), so maybe you've seen them but not known?
i also feel like i only see .ogg files as part of like video games, never for random audio
oh yeah .ogg is the container
there's also that. especially now that the mp3 patents have expired, mp3 is Good Enough for most things imo and basically universal, like .zip
it's an audio format but not necessarily a file format
if you have used teamspeak or discord for voice chat, you have used opus
I dub yee godawful but solved
I'm seriously considering ||sacrificing one input to make a permanent quicksilver generator||
mvp is the ||hex arm in the botton, for handling all the quicksilver AND the second product||
legitimately the worst. I'm actively screaming
I LOVE PRODUCTION PUZZLES!
signing off the night with a relatively uncursed puzzle by comparison
production puzzles are a nightmare while solving but such a joy once you're done
I think half my instructions are the last bond
Permanent quicksilver generator would require glyphs i do not have :(
The resonant crystal is beautiful
Just a little wiggling and then suddenly! Product!
I love when my computer randomly decides video output isn't for it so I have to force shutdown
And now on reboot why is the kubuntu loading screen just text and concerningly long
Oh finally
I really need to fix my lock screen
Oh I can't sign into x11 anymore
Oh wayland isn't broken now so that's fine actually
haha linux user no video output technical issue
should use Windows 11 and enjoy video output technical issues instead
😔
ive never had that issue before and i have no idea when it happened bc i havent been on desktop for like 20 hours
my intel discrete gpu laptop loses its hdmi video output to the monitor whenever a video is playing. my nvidia discrete gpu pc loses its dp video output to the monitor whenever a uwp application is onscreen with hardware acceleration or just some embedded video blob in certain programs like steam
i haven't got a single clue why
the only common denominator is a dell s3221qs monitor for both devices
wtf
Windows 11 or nah
both win11
That's hilarious
recent issue too, the pc started in the last year
Gooood morning
Are u also Framework shrill
Also at this point in my life I think I will make all my furniture in the future

Same and I hate it
Upholstery is a suprisingly easy skill, I thought it was one of the skills that you have to be a savant and spend decades learning because being able to even think about it but apparently not
It's really patience and staples
It's truly a metric ton of staples, very useful to have a magnet nearby so you don't stand on them when taking them out
Also I haven't done a couch so
Isnt kde removing x11 support?
Yeah, couch is the one I was thinking would be tough to do
Particularly because the furniture I buy myself is heavy af
and I need to be able to move a couch
🤷
just previously if i signed into wayland immediately, things would break
so i had to sign into x11 (which was also broken), then sign out and sign back into wayland
what
yep
When KDE Plasma 6.8 releases, all support for x11 will be dropped. The expected release of 6.8 is in October of 2026
What OS?
This is not normal behavior
..well, this is very expected behavior if your on arch
shouldn't happen to debian/ubuntu, it could hit fedora, but thats not as common as arch
sometimes packages get funky cause of how bleeding edge they are and soemtimes devs push without really testing
Kubuntu
That's extremely bizzare
this feels like anti-arch propaganda
no it isnt
i use cachy os on my laptop
just havent heard of x11 and wayland dying randomly before
found this and got reminded of casey (well except for the touhou part, I think)
https://www.sporcle.com/games/SomethingInWorl/kirby-song-or-yuri-title-or-touhou-song
oh, another layer to
I know nothing about touhou
Except of course the thing that gets put everywhere (Bad Apple)
hmm honeycrisp
idk I'm allergic
or technically I just have hay fever and my body is apparently stupid and thinks the apple is actually a concentrated dose of tree pollen
heating it up or just processing it at all fixes it
damn
weirdly I barely suffer from hay fever but apples hit me
my hay fever seems to solely be affected by birch trees
I get pretty bad hay fever, but extremely mild pollen crossover to food
Mostly it's celery, interestingly
unfortunately that's exactly the type of pollen that's the problem with apples, cherries and a bunch of other fruits
Celery is...not spicy, I know, but it tastes spicy to me now (didn't used to)
lmao
I might have the fruits mildly, but I pretend I do not see it because I love fruit
In small doses apple just makes my throat feel kinda messed up
before I knew I had that I thought that was just how apples were
like how pineapples eat you back
then one day I consumed an unholy amount of cherries in 1 sitting and that really fucked me up, took weeks to fully feel normal again

understandable
aw man, that sucksss
my husband loves cherries and keeps asking me when they'll be in season
i've pointed out that literally the cherry trees are blooming right now here
they are
160/300, I feel like it's cheating to include ||touhou fanfiction|| in the ||yuri category||
/lh
I feel like fanfiction would be cheating in this context, yeah
I think it was just one, but there were so many titles I might've lost track
frantically making that edit so that I don't get eviscerated by like 3/4 of the server if it gets quoted pre-edit
(I didn't parse the pre-edit anyway)
also ig the stats agree, the one I complained about had the lowest hit rate at 12.5%
Bruh
i made an account to start migrating my translation out of my mod directly
and hosting translations there
seems Nexus gave me a pretty harsh punishment for doing a good thing :/
so i cannot edit mods upload or do anything
this is just dumb
nexus makes it pretty clear you aren't allowed alts
why would you want to migrate the mods out of the mod anyway when you still own it
This is the first time I'm hearing about it!
Most of them are submitted by other user(s)
which I credited
this is why you read the TOS that you agree to
it became too hard for them and me to wait for all translations to be completed befoer an update
so to give them freedom
One Account per User
The efficiency of our moderation approach and moderation tools is dependent on the principle of each user being linked to a single account. It is therefore forbidden to register or use more than a single account per user without pre-approval by staff. Users with multiple accounts may have one or all of their accounts suspended. In the event of alternative accounts being used to evade a ban or restrictions on a main account, all accounts belonging to the offending user are subject to suspension (i.e. a ban) and any (pending) unban appeals are forfeit.
https://help.nexusmods.com/article/27-moderation-policy#One_Account
Yeah, I see that now
I dont need to be reminded
so why not just have them upload them
At the time when I just started modding
I did not know that existed
give me a break will you
i did the best at what i knew and now i know
i wonder how they primarily detect alts. like is it IP address or
ip, usernames obviously connecting
they can smell it
I made it pretty clear to them lol
"This is an official account owned by LucyTheDove for translations" as the bio for that account
I don't think that could have been any better way to get someone moderated lol (I did not know at the time of doing this that it wasn't allowed)

How r u
well considering fruit is generally a development of pollinated flowers im gonna say ur body is smarter than you and should be given a turn at driving
A 4 runner nearly drove me off the road today lol
i hope they have permanently soggy socks, that's awful
I don't even drive a small car but I guess they didnt see me?
What exactly is a pie and how is it different to a cake?
The butter crust
I need to Google this
A pie in America is like. Has a flaky crust and filling
Like thos
I don't think I know that.
by butter crust do you mean short crust
as in, crust made with shortening
or is this something entirely different
U may use shortening but I will disown u
wow ok
also bizarre that my unupdated laptop firefox doesn't do the irritating youtube 'experiencing interruptions' loop but my pc firefox does, even though both use ublock origin
maybe it's umatrix causing it
another fun issue i have now
my wifi disconnects multiple times an hour now
instead of a couple times a day at most
Y'all arent selling Linux very eell
i had to mess with things so much to try to make hidden networks work so im blaming all my other wifi issues on that
-# i did not resolve it
surprisingly the ancient mint box running on an eeemachine from windows xp era connected to my wifi with absolutely zero issues
i suggest downgrading to the latest version of 32-bit mint
my wifi extender does often decide to just not connect to the internet sometimes and it sometimes only changes its mind when i open The App
the never obsolete machine?
nono not emachines. eee PC
a bit of solice is that its almost 100% consistent on ethernet.. but i also can't tether ethernet from my phone and charge it at the same time, and there's a ceiling in the way to use a wire to the router
also didn't ubuntu 26.04 come out literally today
more specifically an Eee Box
disappointing
i too confused the two
i think so
maybe it'll get even worse if you update again. try

I don't think I ever once upgraded ubuntu and something didn't break
It's april?
not for long
May the first be with u
I'm watching a YouTube channel on dead companies and damn
So many companies I forgot about
@lethal walrus Sorry for earlier, i was just extremely frustrated
very frustrated and a bit saddened, though Im okay now : )
I got an issue with my wifi card on Linux for my desktop pc
its signal on windows is great, on linux, 30%, drops to 0, then disconnects for a few minutes, decides to reconnect, and dies
it worked once i upgraded to ethernet
Nokia
Nokia still exists.
This is fundamentally why I don’t have Linux
The big issue is that due to fragmentation (which is not a bad thing) there are so many different systems, some which are designed to work out of the box for most setups, some which are made for people who love tinkering and as such aren't maintained in a way to support every single use-case and hardware without issues.
And because of the different systems and solutions software and drivers is also very fragmented, and... well, in summery, while many distributions are much easier to use nowadays than 10 years ago, the issue remains that things might break on your setup under specific circumstances and so far fixing these specific things is harder simply because the entire Linux tech support community is small and mostly by nerds for nerds. Meanwhile, Windows tech support, while the errors might be weirder and less logical, the tech support community is much more orientated towards everyday users who only know the difference between left-click and right-click.
They dont know the difference between left and right click
How goes lectures?
Still at 8am?
have i been selling windows 11 particularly well
augh i need a new and expensive chair
Didn't realize windows 11 made people need new chairs
I thought that was just Mozart liking to scratch up mine
you wouldn't expect it would be such a pain in the ass
U have standing desk
i also have sitting desk. mixing both is best
I wouldn't sell windows 11 if you gave me the world
kneeling desk is best
Eagle pose desk

i need something this size
Like literally a mac
i was hoping it'd give one of those traditional writing desks that's basically that but in a chinese style

Every Thursday, yes. I had to get up 21 hours ago. Don't ask me why I'm not asleep yet.
Are desks and chairs the new thing
Lmao I hate windows but engineering software mostly runs on it so I must abide
I’m a giant hamburger yes
I have used macOS since I first learned computers
I used windows only sporadically and at school until high school (when Solidworks forced me to use windows)
The new thing is desks yes
my condolances
Idk it’s definitely my favorite rn
Could always change if they make it worse
But look at the competition…
The fun part is they can still make it worse as long as they don't make it worse than the competition!
The doubley fun part is some of the competition is actively making themself worse, which gives more worse-ness to work with!
(I don't use my mac enough to know if they are enshittifying any, besides the ever present making it difficult to run apps that don't go through them)
I'm considering mac life but change is hard
today's opus
i like how the little air bit is built
I can't recommend it because the changes are big and there is not much you can do as for configuration without third-party tools, many of which are paid.
That's at least my experience.
Otoh I check email, so.
It's the little things. For example, there isn't a "maximize" button, instead it's either "fullscreen" or "zoom". "Fullscreen" (the button you would assume is maximize) hides the dock (the taskbar replacement), so multi-tasking becomes more difficult. "Zoom" happens by double-clicking the title bar, which resizes the window to fill the screen as much as possible, but still leaves a few gaps because of macOS rounded corners (see image, the dock is only in the middle and I find the desktop wallpaper at the sides really distracting).
In order to change the green buttom to "zoom" instead of enabling "fullscreen", you need to use a third-party app that barely works half the time.
But for people who are used to macOS it works. And I don't want to discourage anyone from trying it (if you can do that for free, paying 600$ for a system you might not like is something I actually discourage).
My mom uses mac. My dad did for a while, i think they may have an old one floating around i can take.
What does any of this mean
robots pay other robots in crypto pegged to a normal currency
Ur AI agent can blow all your money on concert tickets for u with stablecoin
I legitimately...why would u want thsi?
imagine for a moment you have all this money and all these agents and you just don't know what to do with them all
Why would I want the agent to spend the money I've spent a lifetime saving?
I want to hit the buy button myself :(
It's far more limited

The only good thing i have to say about mac is that it's unix adjacent
better terminal experience...
I've still never in my life tried out a mac. My only comparison is an ipad pro which I absolutely loathe with every fiber of my being
I'm thinking about getting into the world of alternative keyboard layouts because apparently I enjoy pain. Does anyone else have experience with them?
it's the one step I've never been brave enough to take
Have you considered just learning sign language and some sort of sign-language-OCR? That sounds less painful
unless you count having a split keyboard with symbol layer as an alternative layout
but I assume you mean like Workman or Colemak
I've been wanting to try and come up with something similar.
I'm playing around with some of them here, didn't realize there were so many options:
https://sites.google.com/view/keyboards/tools/alphatestdrive_glove80?authuser=0
A way of typing in VR that is as immensely painful as a virtual QWERTY keyboard
One that you have to point and click, or move your whole hand to press keys
workman, colemak and dvorak are the most popular alternatives I think
It's awful
once upon a time I dreamt about knowing sign langauge cause it sounded cool
was very fleeting after I realized how much effort that takes
This seems so wrong to me. Having R on your thumb, wtf.
I tried Dvorak but I'm old now
Look yhe future is here we talk to agents now we dont type
I know Dvorak is better but like
Typing is not the slow point for me, I'm fast enough at vim
Any theoretical saving from Dvorak is lost when you have to switch back and forth between it and qwerty
dang, didn't know there were enchanted keyboard layouts
Also how do u play wasd games on non qwerty (jk)
The theory is that it's easier to train your brain to associate a new layout to a new keyboard (which is my case is ortho/split) and still be able to switch back to QWERTY on a laptop
You may be jk, but that is a legit problem with some game implementations
Matt, I cant reliable tell anyone my passwords, all my password info is just simply in my muscle memory
I do still type just fine on a regular qwerty keyboard desipte growing used to split keyboards but that's a smaller change than a different layout
If a game properly uses scancodes, it'll use the keys at that same physical location
Even though I've already developed the split kbd muscle memory, I think I can still reassociate myself given enough training
If they don't? Well, good luck. Especially if the keys aren't rebindable
If I get a stroke I'll be in Trouble TM, not sure how i could even get in a bank account
Be proud that I even know what a wasd is
I'd probably set the layout in my keyboard's firmware and keep the OS on qwerty
Even though this layout seems so drastically different, I'm kind of interested just for the stats. Not to mention if I'm going to go different, I may as well go all out https://sunaku.github.io/enthium-keyboard-layout.html
only real gamers play kpop demon hunters
What's a real gamer anyways

I also just flashed my keyboard to this, which I'm trying to learn as well. It's surprisingly close to the one I was already using, but swaps it's HRM ctrl and shift compared to my layout: https://my.moergo.com/go60/#/layout/user/040f9725-195b-4331-b6a3-6629f8dfda0a

Unfortunately most of them have the vowels next to each other. On touch keyboards with autocorrect having them spread far is much better, because if you mistype it's easier for autocorrect to guess when you hit a consonant instead of a vowel instead of if you hit another vowel.
[REDACTED]
Nobody said it was easy. No one ever said it would be so hard.
https://my.moergo.com/go60/#/layout/user/637c9b53-880a-47e8-9629-ce51168827bc
what on earth is that layout
I have never understood the desire to have FEWER keys. I want a 1000% keyboard
literally give me ten rows of modifiers and special buttons
like that one guy from linus tech tips
I mean... with layers I have more keys than the average keyboard
Wishing I could have a movie training montage, and skip the actual work
good luck
i should really set some dns records on my domains to tailscale things
i am fighting with coolify and ports again 😔
If it's for private services you can just use MagicDNS
sure but thingy.strange-dinosaur.ts.net is a bit more confusing than thingy.ts.pillow.rocks
You can combo with https://github.com/tailscale/golink to do go/thingy
ooo
you don't need custom dns records if you're using tailscale do you?
I mean you could
Well you can reverse proxy from one node to another using your tailscale IP
for my home server stuff I just use the machine names access them
i dont need it sure, but its easier
I'm making heavy use of Tailscale Services ever since they launched that feature (not to be confused with funnel). All of my apps have a app-name.my-tailnet.ts.net address.
didn't even know that was a thing
It pairs very nicely with https://github.com/marvinvr/docktail
it truly can always be prettier
ooooo
i do forget hostnames work
I'm too lazy to use this but it seems very neat
For example, here's what I add to a compose.yaml file to basically make Tailscale my reverse proxy
labels:
docktail.service.enable: "true"
docktail.service.name: manyfold
docktail.service.port: "3214"
docktail.service.service-port: "443"
It automatically get's a cert for https://manyfold.my-tailnet.ts.net and routes to the manyfold:3214 without me having to expose the port at all
that's really nice
oo
sigh another thing to do when I have time
I do run basically my entire media server in a big docker container as is already
why is tailscale free anyway I should really be paying for this
it is when you do more with it
or want to have mullvad as your exit node, but that costs the same as a mullvad subscription so i dont know if tailscale actually makes anything from that
New quote added by atravita as #7967 (https://discordapp.com/channels/137344473976799233/1215712021207720006/1497340689317495039)
I won't complain
my entire media server stack is already being routed through my vpn so no gains there
I have a custom domain name for my tailscale services. It took me a while to figure out, but now they work with devices on my network, as well as on devices off my network via tailscale
Remembering ports? Madness. I got my own subdomains everywhere
what would be public?
the http server im running here
not really an issue to be public tbh but eh
oh wait i can just
make nginx listen for a tailscale domain can't i
I'm watching with interest but I'm almost certain there's a simpler way to do this
my headcanon is it gets turned into waste output
Secretly behind the scenes it's a waste chain?
secure and ai in the same sentence
while it can be secure, most times its not
It is zen
my eyes didnt deceive me yay
..
shouldnt you be asleep
its 2 am, 2 am gang yay
I am taking notes
ahhhh
this one took a while
I still think quint is the worse with glphs ngl
look at that ugly attempts at moving things
yeah the quintessence glyph's inputs is rather awkward
I feel like a lot of the dlc is just basic maths of which route will turn this metal into that metal most efficiently
which is fine ig but makes puzzles feel a lot more repetitive
in a way, adding in the "missing" operations on metals to complement the ones that were already there kind of just makes you work around fewer things
my options for city council are three people who I can get zero information on
one didn
one didn't even put up a webpage
Is one a cat?
how do we vote on people who haven't even bothered to fill out the ballotpedia questionaire, put up a webpage, or talk to the local news outlet smh
sounds like a gap in the market
almost finished
if this is a journal puzzle then my 80/24/10 is probably a single solution
ah it's dlc and I have two solutions, 80/50/10 and 190/24/64
lmao selph's solution is probably exactly the same as my first solution
(this is the second solution)
it's having fun
oh I have one idea for reducing it maybe
The only thing I can see is changing the order of operations.
yup
the solution
(||by swapping it from being 1 iron 1 tin 1 lead each to being 2 tin 2 lead from the first one and 2 iron from the second one, you're essentially giving the iron and tin (which take slightly longer to do) a very slight head start||)
I've got wheels at home, thanks.
Realistically before the introduction of the ||halt|| command you'd probably do some pipelining so the first one becomes the catalyst for the second, etc
But why bother with figuring that out when you can just sacrifice the first input and make yourself a nice wheel
the sinking feeling when your solve would be so much better if you just mirrored it but there's not like a command for that
(it's not faster but there's a lot less stupid moves)
i always see yall posting about this doohickey game
"understanding this pattern may require learning about the language you're using" doesn't seem like as good a point as this article seems to think it is...
idk man that disqualifies almost every Python user I've encountered
To be fair that's also just a negative about python in general with how much it relies on magic conventions like that
yeah I do agree, but also _new_ is one of the most basic ones
There's not really a difference though
That said __new__() is barely used, __init__ is the common one
Singletons, iirc, arent actually better than just having an instance in a module lol
yeah but it's not exactly arcane knowledge. I'm not asking for people to know about init_subclass
okay quick question, in python code, do you prefer:
a "static" class using all classmethods
a "singleton" without any enforcement
a "singleton pattern" singleton
something else
I can't remember in python specifically because it's been over a decade since I've done enough python that was large enough to need any patterns, but in JS I do the export of the pre instantiated instance for singleton pattern
I sure use the "hey there's an instance in this module" more often than not
you could do it before the halt instruction, btw
I used it once before
you put the arm on a track to move it out of the way, and then the instruction to move it out of the way does nothing because it's already at the end of the track so it just harmlessly moves around
I really like the strategy of duplicating a higher value metal and then dividing it down
It means the whole left side can be quite leisurely and still deliver all the metal I need
(Because there are three in a monomer, it does need to make two monomers per tape loop but that's okay)
This is so damn satisfying to watch and I don't even have a clue about what it is 😔🔥🔥

this is like the one zachtronics game that doesn't have you spend more than an hour on every level
I have definitely spent more than an hour on some opus magnum levels
Some of the journal ones are Hard TM
@ atra, did over 5k but in that time I also forgot what game I wanted you to play so I'm banking my atragaming point XD
making explicit fsm
hurt my brain
the person didnt even have a proper flag based state machine, which i dont recommend even having for an app
flag based is scary in desktop apps, i wouldnt have one near my code
unless its just super small and for a very simple, non crucial aspect of said app
even then..idk
I only know Fanta and it tastes bad.
I only trust unfiltered, cloudy soda.
Crush is the more flat one thats mostly just sugary sweet
sunkist is my fav, its same level of sweetness but it has stronger flavor
not much of a kick tho
fanta isnt as good as sunkists taste
but its still good, it has a kick
all of this is an opinion of the orange, results my vary
yes, this is relating to programming
-inserts ladder logic for the PLC-
My soda should only taste slightly sweet, but more importantly a bit bitter and sour.
Idk if you get Something and Nothing where you are, but their yuzu soda might satisfy that requirement for you
I also like wostok's blueberry and sage
i dont think we have sunkist or crush here
and our fanta is different
I discovered when I moved here that Dutch fanta is an abomination
My favourite fanta so far has been Italian fanta
there's.. more than two types??
It's yellow and barely tastes like anything
oh italian fanta has the curvy logo
Blood orange fanta my beloved
dont think ive had that one
im pretty sure i've seen enderflower but then didnt bother getting it
The Indian fanta isn't great either, mind you
It's got 13.6g of sugar and 22.3g of sodium in it, an exposé done recently revealed this is significantly higher than Malaysian fanta
Idk why malay fanta was the reference point but it did explain why that shit was so sweet
oo
oh that is very different
i think i had a drink once with over 60 grams of sugar
How zoomy were you after
why is it green (and why did i duckduckgo indian fanta and get a dutch result?)
Why does the Indian one look like a forensic evidence photo 😭😭😭
i dont recommend that
i guess theyre trying to get a photo of it on a plain background but it does look a bit incriminating
that was a one time thing
youve been watching too many true crime documentariessss

fair but imagine someone doing .q and getting that out of context

(Note: I don't know what the final outcome was. I didn't know the docket number so I couldn't look it up later. Pretty sure that if he did get a guilty verdict though, he'd have appealed. Maybe I can find the case on the high court case search, idk.)
Huh. Never heard of it, but I will see whether I can find it. Thank you.
Replying didn't work the first time.
wtf is dolby's audio codec
it's huge
I have an hevc encoded film that was still 11 GB so I looked why and there's 2 audio streams that are DTS-HD which are 4 GB each
they both individually take up more space than the entire video stream
I think it's because it stores different tracks as vectors in a three-dimensional space.
I have no idea why that would make sense but I fully accept it as truth
For Atmos playback on any calibrated configuration of speakers. You could reduce the size by baking in a specific configuration, but then you could only use these speakers at exactly these positions.
very cool but also very useless for me with a pair of headphones
it was hindicted

Never heard of it either but coincidentally saw it at the store today!
But ehat aboit the best soda
Nooooo
It's gooood
Only kinda. The controller will still address every individual speaker differently. That still enables more accurate surround sound than if it was a stereo track for stereo TV speakers.
I wonder how that works. After all, that's two entirely different concepts.
Well, ignore everything I said, apparently DTS-HD is the one before the 3D vector thingy.
explains why I couldn't find anything
metadata just said 5.1 channel audio nothing funky
Sorry for sending you on a goose chase.
I had to work with the other one, and I loved the concept and hated working with it.
there's too many codecs
a classic
AAC, AC3, DTS, DTS-HD, OPUS, FLAC...
I think those are mainly the ones I've come across in this journey
The worst are the different kinds of WAV. When a program reports "this software needs YOLO-42 RAW audio", and I'm like "What does it mean?!".
lmao
what's your favourite WAV and why is it PCM-16
anyone here using vlc as a main media player
yeees
oh wow vlc has dark mode now
and yet the title bar remains light until you restart 🙂↕️
I stopped using VLC when I heard that it doesn't have good color profile support.
Still an awesome project, and what I'm currently using might not be easy for most people.
I just love how I can do a lot of things with audio and playlists
too bad it doesnt have native rpc
or rps
whatever was it
why would i ever want people to know what i'm watching
more to the point, who would ever want to know
fair enough!!
its just what spotify has
for audio
for videos, not sure how it works
I find it funny to watch people listen to something and then doing absolutely nothing with this info
I disabled all Rich Presence thingy because that feels creepy.
Talk to me. I will tell you what you need to know.
no-privacy-as-a-service
I tend to use mpv instead of vlc
Which one?
-# there are multiple mpvs?
Multiple clients.
I supposed I also use jellyfin with libmpv if that counts
interesting; I just use whatever pops up when I type mpv into the console
I guess that's the original one. There are multiple GUI clients. Don't really know what they add, because I have only used them.
everything is social media
why is venmo
venmo is pretty much just an american thing afaik
I think the closest equivalent here is Tikkie
though most banks support doing it without a third party app I feel like
Shouldn't you have Wero by now?
Wero replaces iDEAL eventually but tikkie is tikkie
rn websites just say iDEAL | Wero now
haven't noticed any other change at all
For push transactions like that Australia has payid which all Australian banks work with where you associate your bank account with email or phone number and people can send you money by entering that, zero fees and instant
big swinging arm is having fun.
that's zelle (other than taking three days)
That's what Wero should be for all European banks.
In the long term it's supposed to replace PayPal as well.
For commercial stuff.
also I'm quite sure this is min rate (one per four) but the latency is pretty bad)
the Netherlands has had iDEAL since I was like 9 years old we're just now being told it's going to be called Wero now and nothing will change
tbh I think the big thing is you guys have instant transfers and we don't
mostly.
there's things that fake it
we do yes
(ie, if I "transfer" money to fidelity they'll let me place a trade immediately.)
It could be that they decided to just expand your system.
now, my money hasn't showed up there yet, they're effectively spotting me for three days
if the money doesn't show up I assume they will be Big Mad but that's not been a problem for me
I was astounded hearing some story in the UK where someone's payment came in late because the bank doesn't process payments on Sundays
like what
Selph did you see my other metal division fun
surely payments are completely automatic it should take seconds
this one.
I was very confused
it's not that the payments aren't automatic, it's that there's time in flight so systems can review for issues
that hasn't been a thing here for basically as long as I've had access to a bank account so it was a revelation for me
(and tbh I'm at the spot in my life where someone taking money out of my bank account when I'm not looking is FAR more terrifying than a 3 day wait)
and I've have things set up intentionally to make transfers harder.
Things actually will change: There will be consumer protection. Apparently iDEAL didn't have that.
not ideal to not have consumer protection :P
what does it protect
(is there the usual ~small percentage fee for that?)
what am I being protected from I mean
it's basically insurance against a bad company tbh
I don't remember iDEAL getting hacked or something
say, if you buy smth from WeWork USA, and they never deliver your Fancy New Desk Chair
you can go to the bank and go "hey, this wasn't done right, can you refund me the money"
And they will do it and sort it out with the seller afterwards.
ah the marketing pitch creditcards use to try to avoid bringing attention to how horrendously unsafe they are
Kinda, yeah.
eh, if someone steals a credit card of mine, they (a) will likely trip the fraud detector, (b) can only run money up to the credit limit, and (c) my bank will text me immediately
hmm I guess I have no idea how that works. Never had to do that before
(every transaction - bank texts me.)
if someone steals my card they can uh... take at most 50 euros from it till the contactless limit is reached
still not ideal
If someone steals my card, they will realize that I have disabled NFC and they need to enter a PIN every time.
Wait, paying by NFC card is a requirement for public transport in the Netherlands?
we've had NFC based transit cards for a very long time. It's a fairly recent thing that regular debit and creditcards work too
for physical tickets, in the rare occasion you have one, there's qr code scanners at the check in gates too at train stations
the same card is used for every kind of public transit in the entire country
be it a train, bus or even a ferry
Huh. That sounds interesting. Can you have a subscription? How would that work?
we basically went from stamp cards the bus driver had to stamp straight to NFC cards when I was a little kid
you can tie subscriptions to a card yeah
like a discount during quiet hours or a senior discount
done at the same site where you'd print out your invoice sheet if you declare your transit costs to your employer
Most people either have a subscription here or pay the bus driver by cash.
we also have machines you can use to charge the cards in train stations
but those are also just the regular ticket machines
cash has not been accepted here since... God I don't even know
In the US every city has their own system
you can have a subscription here too or they also kind of help you out by auto applying the daily maximums etc
yeah I'm talking about the London system here
Bart has their card (but you can use Google Wallet)
Dallas has their own app (but you can buy paper tickets too)
I have some ancient oyster card
Well, auto-applying doesn't work for cash
before you ask "what do tourists without phone payment methods do?", the tfl website says they should order cards weeks or months in advance. that's it that's the only option they give
we don't have cash on public transport
having used a lot of transit systems around Europe... The Netherlands seems to generally be one of the first to any new tech
I only meant that's why we don't do that.
best case scenario if you're buying a train ticket at a station whose actual ticket stand is open, you could pay with cash
I won't ask about the last one because I know the answer.
we've got actual stores that don't accept cash anymore
(but that means you either really lucked out or are in central London)
there are no physical banks in my city
London is similar, yeah
We have a single restaurant like that here and people don't like it.
though not that similar. probably at least in part because there are actual banks in London, not just bank branch places
there are ATMs of course just no bank you could walk into
fun fact: bank station is called bank because it's in the same place as the bank of england's underground storage
incredible
tbh I think the Netherlands is weirdly quick to accept any kind of digitalization
if we can automate it we will
very unlike many of our neighbors
though we probably actually hate creditcards more than them at the same time
I think this is at least partially directed at Germany and there is nothing I can say in defense.
also France
This is wild to me btw
London just wants to stop interacting with other people and these digital things just seem like a step towards that
that's part of our motivation too
does the US still not have major self-checkout adoption btw
It's absolutely wild that you guys dont have physical bank branches
Oh! At Walmart the other day they were very clearly using AI to identify my produce
At the self checkout
why
So in the US for loose unbanned produce you have to type in a 4 digit code
the US would have to (finally) phase out checks before it could think of getting rid of physical banks
This is actually kind sloelw
we have a perfectly good system here and that's having an employee look over your shoulder while you find the correct produce in a menu
(They're mostly gone. I haven't touched a check in a decade. Plus like. You can deposit them with your phone)
my favourite way to shop in person is phone checkout
Anyways the 4 digit code works fine but is kinda slow. To speed it up, Walmart seems to be using AI
not even self checkout. I just scan everything with my phone and put it in my bag
dutch self checkouts are the least restrictive I've experiencded. The London ones have plates with scales and they yell at you if you put things in the wrong spots
I put my oranges down, hit the "loose produce" button, and it asked me which oranges I bought
they're a massive joke even here
"unexpected item in the bagging area"
Self-checkout in Germany is easy for stores to manage because customers don't trust that modern stuff. Oh, and you can't pay by cash, which is 82% of all transactions still. So they don't even need an employee keeping watch because it will be empty all the time.
French stores defend their self checkouts like everyone there is a criminal ready to perform a heist
What do you do with per pound items?
simple! I don't 😌
The only one it screwed up was the apples (it offered me six varieties, none of which was the one I bought)
So I just keyed it in manually
(you would probably get it at the counter where there would be a sticker with a barcode, exactly like how you would deal with it at the self checkout)
you print a label with a barcode at the fresh produce aisle and scan that at the self checkout
Ah, okay, our self checkouts weigh it
our scales are at the produce aisle itself and have been since I was a little tiny baby
You either scan the tiny sticker on each produce item, type in the four digit code, search items by name. Or I guess new to 2026, the AI tells you you have oranges and asks which variety
genuinely wild to me
The only place where they had been commonplace ten years ago and have been accepted and used all the time is Ikea.
my grocery store at the corner of mg street has 12 self checkouts and a single traditional cash register and even then they're often full while the cash register is just 2 grannies
hell the 80+ year old grandma who lives in the apartment under me uses the self checkout
I think many people like talking to the cashier.
I've been doing mobile only NFC payments for a decade now
we don't like talking to people we don't already know
I know all cashiers in my local grocery store.
I mean, if you don't use the traditional checkout, you won't get to know them, so that makes sense.
Using myself of all people as a metric for an average Dutch person is poor practice though
New quote added by atravita as #7970 (https://discordapp.com/channels/137344473976799233/1215712021207720006/1498141777612378132)
I get to know them because the self-checkout makes them search my cart every single time (based on amount bought ig)
I've built self checkout software...
also the veggie section here just has a scale that shows you a qr code, so pick your item -> price based on weight
we had a bunch of different metrics to decide whether you get checked that stores could tweak
and employees had a tablet they could use to forcefully trigger one
I imagine their computer booth here can do that, though they never really notice me until I've waited a bit
but yeah, not sure what else stands out
I do ~$200 runs whenever I get around to going
main metrics were things like itemsmarked as high risk like energy drinks
Or like the 20 bottles of wine I buy for my mother when it's on sale again.
high risk because teenagers buy them
large volumes or 1 item were also a metric
or whether someone was fast
whether they ever removed something from the cart after scanning
I was just wondering how many people honestly key in their apples
Vs key in the cheapest apple
(BTW, is there a reason why pink ladies are now the cheap apples?)
I did see people rec tagging everything as bananas, some years back (idk if they're still cheap)
but even if I was going to do that, I was buying bananas anyway
I usually do that because I was raised to be a nice person and my mother pays for them.
There are advantages to still living with your parents.
Especially when it's a family home for the two of us.
Hey, I tagged the exact apples i bought, which were the 2nd cheapest apples
oh right 1 fun metric was simply "how many checks are currently already underway". So like if someone is already getting checked you'd never also get checked
Thanks for that knowledge!
np
Anyways
they were all configurable so idk who used which
for all I know the store marked a brand of cheese as a guaranteed manual check requirement
The expensive cheese right
only Old Amsterdam
Tbh I have no idea how European supermarkets work
In my head all y'all still get groceries every day like the French did in the 1950s
well depends on the country... and chain
On average I buy groceries once a week in winter
I do get groceries 2/3 times a week
buying kraft sharp cheddar clearly marked me as a criminal
Once every two in summer
I live basically next to my grocery store I just pop in when I need something
sometimes I leave the store with nothing except a single pack of pasta
nearest one here now is about an hour, and past a bridge with half-width sidewalks

thus the big 1-2 month hoarding trips
I usually get my groceries during a lunch break
I'll be back home within 30 minutes anyway
I drive past the grocery store every work day so
and I can grab some croissants from the bakery
Tasty
Speaking of groceries, do any of you have these weird aisles that spray water over the produce?
Yes
The misters?
It's for freshness
it's been a long time, but one of my past places did
The things I dont understand buying are
- Green onions
- Basil
- Cilantro
Does it really work?
We have basil, but we use it up so quickly that buying it is actually easier than using ours.
From a vendor page
Humidification misting systems help store owners boost sales and profits with fresh, appealing and longer-lasting produce. Moisture loss causes products to lose weight dramatically which is a hard cost to the fresh produce retailer. The loss of appeal because of dehydration is considerable, therefore if you are looking to reduce these costs and improve your profit margins then a high-pressure mist humidification system is the best choice for you.
well you have to buy it to grow it
You buy one plant and it lives over the kitchen sink for years
Our plant lives for a week, then we have to buy the next one.
Because it's all used up.
It's weird that nobody uses them here then.
I've read mixed info about that. Some sites claim it keeps them fresh, others claim that it only looks better, some say they do it to make produce heavier and sell it for more.
considering where I am they charge them by the weight, them being heavier = more money
I killed my basil
New quote added by kittycatcasey as #7971 (https://discordapp.com/channels/137344473976799233/1215712021207720006/1498153771874779306)
(Sorry elizabeth, it's just a great "????" out of context)
(I apologize that it required immortalizing your basil murder)
I mean, it was part of a general plant murder incident
I left for 4 weeks with an automatic plant watering machine in place
This machine had a faulty power source and ran on backup batteries until they died
Judging by the state of the plants, this was perhaps 2 weeks in
I still miss my pilea aqua (which initially survived but never recovered), but I apparently just don’t have the indoor plant knack, probably because sometimes I leave for 4 weeks
Perhaps one day I’ll have a large enough social network to get someone to stop in and water my plants, but that day is not today (and wasn’t then either)
Clearly you need a drone you can remote connect to so you water them while you’re away
There’s obviously no other way of accomplishing this task
Indian ones are just regular cash registers with a veneer of independence, because there's always an employee assigned to them to "help"
They never believe me when I say I don't need help. It's very condescending.
there is something about condescension in a british indian accent that hits so much harder for me. the tone is just so pointed
(admittedly most times I've personally seen it happened to be times where it was very deserved, which probably helped
)
that defeats the point...
it's funny how these things differ so much from place to place
I don't remember where in the US but I know there's places where the cashier packs your bags for you which is weird to me
they're already scanning the items let me handle the bags
don't the US cashiers also stand up
it's a thing at least
We are very patient until we're not, and that doesn't change if you're diaspora
god the two north indian QA women I worked with
patience of saints I swear
please stores, place chairs around your store for employees to sit on. Can also be used by kids unfortunate enough to be brought along when their mom runs into someone she knows
there's no saving those kids crumble
they'll be there for hours. or like, ten minutes, but it feels like hours
it's definitely hours
the US also have states where its still illegal to put fuel in your own car
Though its mostly normal in Australian supermarkets for the cashier to pack your bags, and the main exception to the rule is Aldi and Costco
Unless I’m at a self checkout the cashier has always packed my bags my entire life at every shopping centre where I am
Although they often pack them so genuinely awfully that I’d rather they not
I’ve asked to pack my own bags before but apparently at those stores they weren’t allowed to let people pack their own? which makes no sense to me, they’re not losing anything and their employees can move on to another customer sooner
if you ask a cashier to pack your bag for you here they'd probably just stare at you in confusion
meanwhile this has never happened to me at any country I've ever been to
which is mostly just europe to be fair
depends. My grandma who was stuck in a mobility scooter did often ask the cashier to pack for them and they did

good news Ubuntu lovers https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/the-future-of-ai-in-ubuntu/81130
As 2026 progresses, LLM-based tools are becoming more and more ubiquitous. Adoption across the tech industry has been mixed, both in terms of which projects are embracing “AI” technologies, and in how companies are structuring their adoption. As a result, I’m frequently asked about what Canonical and Ubuntu will do (or not) to incorporate ...

What if you don't have a bag for them to pack? I often just carry stuff in my pockets and hands.
it's weird, because if I do go to a cashier lane here, I always pack my own bags.
