The first generation of home consoles went from 1972 to 1976.
Well, it was produced until 1983, but the second generation started in 1976.
I did have one of those ancient atari's and grew up with the commodore 64 amiga
You mean, both C64 and Amiga?
Consoles were made then as well. I think the PS2 was in planning stage then.
specifically amiga, not sure what model as I was <8 at the time
Oh, and we can't forget the second-best console of all time, the Sega Dreamcast.
I enjoyed my pipeline of Amiga -> (OG) Xbox -> Xbox 360 -> PC gaming
with the parallel tracks of GBA, GBA XP, (OG) DS, and then also wii->wiiu->switch->switch2
though I technically did pc gaming during the xbox/xbox360 era as well
I mean the switch 2 was last year and at least docks to be a console
This is so awesome
Yay!
hardware wise, xboxs were always just single purpose PC's from memory, and PS4+ is pretty vanilla hardware wise as well from memory, the PS3 had something interesting going on I think, even if the early ones could run linux fine
the reentry profile of artemis 2 where it effectively bounced off the atmosphere to spend more time in that thin atmosphere was cool

Good morning!
What's your third favorite video game console and what game do you play on it?
My third favorite video game console is the Switch 2 and I play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart World on it.
snes, emulator
That era was peak pixel art imo
I’ve never used a console
I think
I’ve definitely never owned one
I made my husband explain what it was a while ago but I’ve sort of forgotten
gamer
That one is included in my favorite console Wii U because you can homebrew that to run RetroArch (not to mention that you can inject arbitrary titles into Virtual Console releases) (disclaimer for mods: ROMs can be acquired legally by backing them up manually; I do not support or encourage piracy).
It's a PC that is locked down like iOS so you can't sideload and you can only use it for games. It's pretty cheap because the manufacturers earn by receiving a generous license fee on all software that is sold (hence the lack of sideloading).
If I made that sound awful, that's kinda because it is.
I was confused because I thought a switch was a console, but also consoles are often just little boxes you have to connect to a TV?
a switch you can just play on, no TV needed
i mostly know that you can get xbox controllers because people use them for robots
It's like PCs. Some have a screen built in (Switch, like laptops), some don't (small boxes). A Switch also supports a docking station for bigger screens, like a laptop.
Yes. You can plug a Switch into the tv, but their biggest selling point is that they're basically a mini portable console, like a Nintendo DS sorta if you're familiar with one of those at all
So Switch works like a console in the plugging into tv and then using controllers or whatever, but it can be used as both. You just leave the part that stays plugged in into the tv while you hold the screen part
Gifs for visuals
I know what a switch is because I took a design class once where someone was making alternative shaped handles for it
I think that because i grew up with iMacs my idea of "what a computer is by default" is a little wonky
like yeahhhh I guesss the windows boxes are computers, but they're like weird faceless computers
Yeah the whole point of the switch was kinda that it combined nintendo's standalone console line (n64, gamecube, wii, ...) with their portable one (gameboy, DS, 3DS, ...)
basically any shape is better than the current shape 😭 the switch is what happens if your solution to ergonomics is "no"
The person doing this had very large hands and mentioned it was clearly not designed for this
my maybe controversial opinion is that with the exception of the Wii remote, Nintendo has never made any ergonomic default controller
the joycons are an affront to ergonomic design that's for sure
designed for hands no larger than my 3 year old niece's
I dont really know waht a switch is tbh
thing you use to turn lights on and off
Oh like a relay
A mysterious expensive handheld device, like a phone but only plays certain games
I thought the convo was indeed about an actual electrical switch and not the gaming console during my skim
The N64 controller was 100% ergonomic for people with 3 hands!!!
To be more serious, I think the GameCube controller and the Wii U gamepad are both kinda ergonomic, but the latter is very heavy.
But I love the placement of the sticks on the Wii U controllers.
Wii U Pro Controller (the gamepad was similar):
I've only found one other model with sticks like these, and I had to import these from China for 45$ shipping.
Still testing how good they actually are, because the controllers themselves only cost 20$ each. I might start importing them commercially if they are good.
A controller I actually quite like is, no joke, the Stadia controller.
And no, I gave them no money for the service or hardware. It was towards the end when they were just giving it all away with a Chromecast I kinda wanted.
The Wii U pro controller is maybe my favorite controller ever
problem is they're a massive pain to get paired to bluetooth
I can recommend the one I got, which is similar.
It's the successor to that one, but I can't post it because they decided to give it an AI-generated printing:
It has Bluetooth and supports PCs as well. They don't advertise that one as for PCs, I don't know why. The next model is explicitly compatible to PCs and... PS3?
Half of you sit like you have a person vendetta against ergonomics
...that hits like you have a personal vendetta against me.
Have you even seen 10% of the people here's sitting posture.
Or seen them, period

Steam controller 1
I was not a fan of this version at all, it's way to far out from usually controller design to be comfortable to me which is a shame cause they're somewhat decent
That and I did enjoy the ergonomics of the wiiu gamepad
But how do u sit
upside down, sometimes
Terribly, usually in a way that causes my joints to not joint jointly

generally my only solution to my poor posture is to try swapping regularly between different forms of poor posture
so that it all evens out
I have an excuse for having poor posture and I will overuse it til the day I die
is your excuse you are a beagle
is your excuse that a beagle is sitting on you
neither :( but my excuse is that my spine decided to take the somewhat scenic route

augh youtube is upping their ad warfare again. wretched website keeps failing to start videos
Experiencing interruptions? Find out why
Youtube, you are why, stop being greedy and work
it's so Cool™ when you search for a thing you know by name, click on the result, and about 50% of the time it just Doesn't Load and you have to sigh and hit ctrl+R and roll the dice again

this must be what it's like to perform surgery on grapes
and according to the histogram this solution ||sucks in all 3 stats|| which begs the question of the ||LITERAL DEMONS|| I'm going up against
anyway ooh dog
surgery on grapes is not actually that difficult, it's more of a hand-eye coordination exercise
you get a screen showing you what's up
and the tools naturally are calibrated to do small, delicate movements
the suturing itself is something that certain improves with practice, but picking up/moving stuff isn't that hard

SIGBOVIK is my favorite holiday
I have to ask
I've played a video game with a controller like once in my life
Is this normal
if ur on computers yea that seems normal
imo third-person games are generally better on controller, probably because first-person games are generally awful on controller so console-first developers put more effort into making them playable instead
my apparently controversial opinion is that precision platformers are almost always much better on a keyboard than a controller
in Celeste I constantly accidentally went diagonal when I didn't intend to or went straight when I intended to go diagonal on a controller
on keyboard that has never happened because you have much better control and tactile feedback on what you're inputting
a joystick is too imprecise and using the dpad sucks too
I feel like the D-Pad works better on controllers that were optimized for it, like 16-bit controllers.
But otherwise, I kinda agree. I also kinda don't, because in Hollow Knight for example I wish I had been able to move in more than eight directions.
What about racing games?
I tried forza and it's fine too yeah
Halo was pretty tough to get used to
Minecraft was okay
HK isn't a precision platformer in my mind but I also don't think I agree having more than the 4 directional movement it uses would help much
Counter-point: Path of Pain (it was painful)
I'm looking forward to playing that, but first I need to finish HK.
I won't stand for this type G plug slander, it's one of the best plug types!
Good morning!
The best and most painful!
What's your 2nd favorite video game that's better with a controller, and your third favorite controller
Hi DH! Long time no see
It has been a bit!
Oh! And what's your second favorite plug
Stepping on them is certainly not recommended XD
Why plugs are so painful out of all things
Smh
Like they were intentionally made this way
I don't think I could have a second fave game that's better with a controller, that's such a hard thing to figure out XD as for plugs, probably type D or K because of the ground pin and somewhat stable housing compared to the US and EU plugs (A and F)
Second favorite that is better with a controller is probably darksouls 3, no idea what my third favorite controller is.
It's so quiet today
yeah, it's weird
I'm about to pop with frustration, is anyone willing to help me with android? I can't find my config files with zarchive
!androidsmapi
We are not able to provide support if you run into trouble or compatibility issues with Android SMAPI; please use the discord linked on the Android SMAPI github.
IMPORTANT: This is a highly experimental build and may be prone to glitches, bugs, or incompatibilities. Please see the wiki instructions for more information regarding installing the unofficial Android port of SMAPI for Stardew Valley 1.6.
Do not harass mod authors to make Android specific compatibility patches.
That discord is in Thai? It's not a compatibility issue I'm just flunking finding the folder in Zarchive
This channel is for non-SDV-related programming, but we recommend that server for all android SMAPI troubleshooting because we don't know much about it here. You can try asking in #modded-stardew though because a couple people there use it too.
And yeah, the server is in Thai because Narathip, the creator of the android SMAPI port, is Thai

Some of your questions read like you want to make fun of people with too many hyper-specific opinions
Third favorite controller might be the Dreamcast controller.
I have no idea about the other question though, I don't really know which games are better with or without controller, because I usually only play one way or the other (my laptop has an in-built keyboard, my Switch an in-built controller, I'm too lazy to use anything else).
Holocure, and Xbox elite controller gen2
Yes
I've heard good things about it
Highly recommend
Ori and the will of the wisps, Wii remote
Good mornings!!!
I misread this as Ori and the Wii of the Wisps
the wisps don't even have hands
They need the xbox connect then
why is there a half an hour time difference between me and you? are you in one of those weird 30 min timezones?
That message was posted half an hour ago.

I'm making garlic bread i don't have to put up with this nonsense
Garlic bread is so good, you making just regular garlic bread or a herbed and/or cheesy g bread?
Garlic is good. Garlic is love, garlic is life.

Youtube has just started playing a movie on autoplay... I wasn't watching anything like the movie it's put on!
Assume you live in a world where you have to walk 5k for each video game. What percentage of your steam library would survive
Of the ones I actually play? Probably all of them. Of all of them, including the ones I have never touched? 0.2%
i still need clarification on the rules here cus
I've done more walks than games i own in steam by two orders of magnitude
can i not just walk 1k a day
I'm only counting 5k+ continuous walks/runs
I bought new hiking boots yesterday, I can't wait to try them out.
Look I'm watching the opus tourney stream while doing laundry and then I need to lift weights and then I need to move money from one bank account to another
and then I need to move money from one bank account to another
Now I know why you want us to touch grass. It's all connected.
i die
(I dont get it?)
Honestly, neither do I. It made sense in my head, but now it doesn't anymore.
I think because "grass" is a remote slang for money in German. But not well-known.
If i get to count each 5k segment (ie a 10k counts twice) I'm probably over three orders of magnitude
It suddenly got cold lol
I was all about to turn on the AC but then cold! So I baked bread
It is decided: Wingspan is the game of the year of all years for introducing me to the American Woodcock.
The Music of Nature proudly presents "American Woodcock," a video portrait of an American Woodcock giving it's nasal "peent" calls at dusk. Notice the subtle throat sound that immediately precedes each peent. At the end, he takes flight and you can hear the high-pitched twittering of his wings, a sound made by modified wing feathers.

I see why selph says this one sucks
this is my solution so far.
I'm about to toss most of it and start bricking ngl
today's actual solve:
so we can see here
4x earth. 4x water. 1x of air and fire. 7x salt. this means I will need to calcify some
there's three inputs that can avoid debonding.
for sanity I think the calcify should be for the animus
I don't need to calicfy I'm just tired
maybe I do.
do I need 17 atoms total

wtf
I'm working from my mom's today and just saw my work firewall warn me that it blocked a network request from Valve
apparently when my mom boots up her steam deck it sends a network request to other devices on the local network?
probably for stuff like game streaming or for downloading games from other PCs on the network
was a very confusing notification to receive
"I swear it wasn't me gaming during work it was my mom"

Yeah, I bet it's that ability to download games from other devices on the same network
i can't even imagine how a boardroom team at youtube inc. decided that this weird builtin scrolling list of recommendations in the video was the way to go
you try and scroll down the page after watching a video. you want to see the rest of the page. you cannot. it is stuck scrolling the video
same people who put important links in footers and then make the page infinite scroll
i've also noticed the only way to make the video fill the window is if the window is ever so slightly smaller than 1920x1080. any larger than that and the video will always shrink to include the video title
lowk hate footers with all my heart
just baffling
just put everything on header or sidebar which stays or can be hidden
true
Paged over forever scroll for me for sure, especially when you open something on said infinite scroll then go back a page and it sends you right back to the top, utter utter evil
Gooood morning
Good morning/afternoon
i'm fine with footers. it's like a business card for the website. only someone really interested is scrolling that far down
now what i do resent is the modern trend of putting a fullscreen jpeg at the top of every page that does nothing but make you scroll down to see if the page is useful (it isnt)
Footers are usually my most frequented place on websites because the "Contact Us" page is usually down there
also the trend of having images way too big with only 5 words max in a 1080 window, horrible design
Xiaomi is a porime example, there is no need at all
I fully blame apple for that trend
Actually this page has so many of my website dislikes XD https://www.mi.com/uk/product/xiaomi-15/
vertical scrolling that's interrupted by horizontal scrolling
vertical scrolling interrupted by a weird half video half scroll thing that you have to scroll too many times to get passed
and not being able to fit all the info you'd want in one place on screen
I too blame apple, it was the site I went to first but it seems like they've improved slightly, not by much but better at least
Apple website is not that bad actually
It's easy to navigate there's too much information tho
those kind of sites are the reason I have my browser take up only half my screen, and even then sometimes they aren't formatted to display correctly ahem xiaomi ahem
that's how it goes. Apple does something stupid, every other company under the sun copies it cause apple did it. Then apple realizes it was stupid and then stops but everyone else keeps doing it
at least it's showcasing their product rather than just a scenic vista of a beach or a couch or something
though just go to the iPad 11 apple page
it still does fucky scrolling
if an image on a site takes up the entire screen, it should be a background image, I will not budge on this ever
part of it is that desktop PCs became a second class citizen for many websites
Let's trash our good website and replace it with a barely adequate so-called replacement that's slightly better for mobiles somehow but entirely worse in every way
at least the text is easily big enough for my mom to read
now they just have to stop using gray text on white backgrounds
The amount of professional websites that don't adhere to basically any accessibility guidelines is astonishing
After working on accessibility stuff on some work sites for a bit, I got used to just living at 75% zoom because of how huge the fonts want to be
watching my mom blindly click on a form to find a checkbox she needs to check that is light gray on white
it radicalized me
contrast is good
Even though I personally don't really need more accessible websites, I'd have to be dead before I stop thinking about even the most inconsequential unaccessible thing (except languages which i forget about a lot)
then there's an old work application in Microsoft access with no ability to zoom with font size 8pt
genuine nightmare
jail to whoever thought that was a good idea
I find this pretty
What are you doing in their website anyways
generally I believe it's recommended to stick to somewhere between 14-16px on websites for regular content
I use gsmarena to find new phones
I have had issues with gsmarena being unreliable with information on phones, so I usually fact check against the manufacturers website aswell, gsmarena's filter though, amazing when the specs are correct
Tbh.... I'm pretty cheap when it comes to phones, it's not like I need a powerful one
Or one with a good camera
i wanted one with a nice big screen. unfortunately now those are heavy. there's now a very phone-shaped outline of wear in every pair of pants i own
My criteria are IR capabilities, and ~100W charging, IR specifically is something not often advertised
international relations
yep infrared, I have a lot of things that use infrared remotes so having it on my phone is very useful
We were summer last week and we then went back to early spring
fall is bitterly indifferent
I.....don't own anything that uses an infrared remote
it's usually my first go to for electronics projects over internet connectivity due to it being cheaper and less susceptible to external mingling with other devices
a television?
but it also helps because the TVs I've had use it and buttons are lost often in this house
Nope!
I've heard Nokia makes good, sturdy phones.
Quote from my lecture: "The true spirit of a programmer is that they are really lazy at typing."

Apparently it was about how i = i + 1 annoyed programmers so much that they first introduced the incrementing shorthand i += 1 and then, because that was still too much, i++.
What about that one?
Does it also run Hannah Montana Linux
That's x86 only, unfortunately.
Get a folding screen. Or a purse
Or a tablet, or a laptop
Just run the OS itself through FEX! taps forehead
Mrow?
Then ++i gets to be different lol
i++ and ++i have different semantics though 😔
No new cat pictures, unfortunately.
I assume you understand why though
I have heard of i++ but not ++i, I use i++ more than I probably should, finding out lua doesn't have that was a terrible realisation
I refuse to use i++ even in languages that support it. Python was right about that.
Some dialects of verilog support it and some dont
I see how ++i is faster than i++ cool!
So I'm really inconsistent at work but I'm also so fjcking tired and wont be fixing that
Ask AI to fix it
Ugh I need to hire a better dentist tbh
Ask AI to fix it, dental treatment powered by the cloud
... the mysterious song?
Me have kitty :D (the photos might be a bit older though lol)
Unless the compiler has optimizations on and can tell it won't make a difference either way 😄
though if it's C++ not C and you overload the operator on a custom type, that probably won't be the case
Not as awful as overloading && and || though
Since doing so just makes short circuit evaluation no longer work
Yeah, that one. That is no longer mysterious.
It's a good song
I'm surprised how few opus magnum gifs cross this channel these days
The bridges stole some attention
Clearly we need procedural opus magnum level generation, so people never run out of content
it has steam workshop support
I'm trying to get all of the achievements but certain bridges oh my gid

turns out webps are a lil smaller than pngs
pretty wild. Sometimes it's like 16 times smaller
using like 90% quality on webp which requires me to zoom in really close to even tell a difference
-# for those who care: there is apparently pumpkin cowboy merch
pumpkin cowboooooy
A pin, and a sticker sheet
For most purposes WebP is now the best format: it supports lossless, lossy and animation, is smaller than most competing formats and has broad support.
but have you considered that if jpegxl had won we'd have jxl files aka jixels
which I find amusing
jxl and webp are very close I believe
I did see there's a webp v2 in the works too
Nah, I'm big on avif now
It's got wide support now, supports animation, ive seen massive improvements over png
avif is another one that seems pretty good
It is slowly winning. But it's only 5 years old compared to WebP's 15.
my choice was made for me tho cause FileFlows only supports webp of those 3
I thought you could run arbitrary command thru it, you just need your know how to invoke it
probably but that's effort and does still require something to be installed that it could use which is more effort
unless imagemagick supports avif by default
jxl requires a special build
it does support avif out of the box
avif was great for https://sneeb.fans
an important usecase
made most of them like 30% smaller from the jpgs
unfortunately this fails for me with a CORS error
disable your thing blocking discord.com
Avif is great for not killing discord
What's that?
its just a site hosting cat pictures lol
I can't open it.
the number is my new improvement!
why is this website just "424 loyal followers of the sneeb". Am I missing something

good question
you see this is a problem of "get decent domain idea, and then a mediocre site idea afterwards"

Can u add some sneebs

snubbles...
Snorbs floating free
to sneeb freely
She is, as we speak, sneebing
Seems hazardous

I am already in such danger with a single snorb
Tbh I'm kidding on the goose but
It's creature dinner in ten minutes, which of course means dinner is clearly late and she's going to eat me and/or mrrp pathetically
One of mom's friends has chickens
Can't wait for all the Sneeb spinoffs to meet in Into the Sneebverse
There's already so more sneeb lore
so more
How goes Mozart
What's a sneeb?
kaileys cat
Technically many cat are sneeb
This is the cutest little sneeb I have ever seen.
Sneeb is a title or perhaps a variety of beast, there is much lore
This one is the original sneeb though. Sneeb prime.
How are her claws going
She's not technically due for a trim yet but I'm probably going to wrangle her soon because the biscuits are becoming hazardous
How do you trim them? I've heard that it can be dangerous, so I have never tried it for my cats.
Anyway her actual name is onyx, but she has a small cult of mod authors under the title Sneeb (as one does)
I just kinda descend upon her like a flying squirrel and put her in a headlock while on all fours on top of her
She'll tolerate it up to a point without a fight but I need to keep her from scuttling away mid trim
How do you know how much you can trim? I know that they have nerve endings somewhere in the claws, and I was always unsure how much I could trim, so I never tried it at all.
There are visual guides you can look up, it's not too hard to tell where the quick is. As long as you're trimming conservatively it's reasonably safe
He's been neglecting me 😔
when are we getting the official sneeb lore compendium
I've been on kitty knife confiscation duty for years so I can do it upside down wrangling a tomcat
She wails it via the song of her people every morning at 6 am
Yay, thank you. It's never really been necessary for our cats, but it's good to know in case we ever need it.
that sounds like a recipe for getting a clawed everything
that's the audiobook version
If you do it right they're both immobilized and incredibly confused, so you have a combat advantage
I'm usually starting on the second paw by the time she figures out wtf just happened
I am not going to ask any questions.
I watched 20 hours worth of documentation and guides for godot and gdscript three months ago and I don't remember anything 😭
duke needs to be sedated for these at the vet now 😭 because he is, as always, a pest
He is a bit big for the flying squirrel manoeuvre
onyx, to her great peril, is like nine pounds. this does not deter her from trying to fight the vet.
Bella was an angel :(
She exclusively fights the vet. And mirror cat. Everyone else is cool in her book.
Morning, iro!
However the vet is very experienced and will simply pin her with one hand while she looks all indignant
duke fights the vets, and mirror beagle, and other dogs (provided they can't actually get to him because he's a coward), all boxes of all kinds, his food bowl, and threatens all delivery people,
night!
Bella was kind to everyone
A bit of a scaredy cat sometimes
But she never fought anyone
Onyx has never actually inflicted injury on anyone, she just poofs up like a pompom and growls because it's very important that everyone knows she's a terrifying apex predator
Especially the vet, who keeps poking her and telling her she's rotund (rude!!!)
duke will gladly fight anyone as long as they're safely on the other side of a gate
look at this young man. does he look like he could win a fight?
I'm afraid my mom's cats will resort to actual violence if it avoids being put in the evil torture cage (carrier)
oh duke has a fantastic solution for being made to go places he doesn't want (mostly the one groomer he hates)
it's to drag himself and whoever is with him directly into the road
a drastic solution
what is she not highly susceptible to
Cat tax
u already asked today
Awwwww
Duke Drastic
You mean the family surname isn't Cendar??
terrifying
irosurname- oh
it's been passed through the generations
Duke doesn't look criminal
that's because of the fraud, atra
don't judge a book by its cover
Duke could definitely convince me on second breakfast
look he's terrifying! definitely a criminal
What about third breakfast
as promised one (1) gif from my vintage collection
Mirror cat is spy sent by the vet, so that checks out
Maybe the real torment nexus was the thing we were travelling in along the way
you could probably pull some actual value from such a statement, but I'm being overly silly as per normal, do not take me seriosuly
rip tim apple
quite the apple turnover
Oh the new CEO of apple is named John. John Apple is going to be a thing
excellent
the era of Tim Apple has ended
it's John Apple now
guess they're sticking with CEOs from engineering backgrounds
though John Apple is more engineer-y
From the hardware division which is their current main strength
plot twist would be that it was him who put the magic mouse charging port at the bottom
or removed the power button from their headphones
or that really bad keyboard they immediately backpedaled on for the next macbook...
wow, 2 mors generators, I didn't think of that
@lethal walrus: look into this possibility (maybe make it deployed from an action to compile the sneeblist™ at build time). (14h ago)
yay! it didn't let you down
I like the theory of the arm inside the output pity it doesnt make it faster
I think i need two arms inside the output
Good job Uber!!
Remind me in 2 hour to the above
But of course, dear p.llow (#7154068) (2h | <t:1776783904>)
sounds like an error
am I the only person in the world who kinda liked the touchbar (if it hadn't cost the F1-12 keys, anyways)
you're one of two of the only people, If there was a customisable touchbar and function keys, it would be amazing, no more using FN to change volume on the keyboard, a blessing
That sounds nice, but F-Keys are important for things, and the current Macbook I'm forced to use doesn't have it, so I have no idea whether I would have liked it.
i use f2, f3, f5, f6, and f10 far too often to ever use a keyboard without them
it's like a keyboard without home/end or rctrl. just why
I just wish the volume, media, useless buttons like mail, home, and calc weren't on the function keys
ThinkPads have at least volume and brightness on the arrow keys.
Thats only marginally better because it an be done with one hand XD
clearly not a real hackers smh my head
real hackers use 40% keyboards and at least two layers of macros for the missing keys
Real hackers use vim on a phone keyboard
I've just learned that portal 2 community edition came out very recently and it has portal 1, 2 and half life 2 available as campaigns you can play in it!
I love that source games are very nearly perfectly interoperable
For what it's worth, you can also configure the touchbar to show the F# keys. But then you lose the fun part of said touchbar
I didn't actually mean the touchbar I completely forgot that ever existed. I meant the butterfly keyboard
@lethal walrus: the above (2h ago)
VSync does not stay on which is slightly annoying, but it's only minor screen tear
switch to Wayland ez
I am on wayland, the game is X11 though I think XD
damn....
yep x11, good old xeyes
like that extremely thin basically 0 travel keyboard that was also way more prone to failure
There are so many things that wayland has issues with that I didn't realise I used, autoclicking, global hotkeys that aren't for the DE, Why are these not able to be done nicely wayland???
the latter can be done through the global shortcuts desktop portal but it'd require the application and your distro to support it
the former... no idea
i didn't even know it didn't work
because of the way wayland handles mouse input (according to a person on reddit, and another person who made an x11 autoclicker) you can't actually register clicks without some janky work around that only works on some mice
the global hotkeys thing not working is mainly due to Wayland's keylogger protections. The desktop portal allows an application to request being told when a specific keybind is used
...why HL2?
I'll have to look into the portal thing, I very unfamiliar with them but it would be quite useful to know for the future
to get ready for HL3 of course

I'll let you have your HL3 copium. I've got a prescription on Steam Frame hopium, after all
since the global shortcuts portal is kind of new some distros/window managers have an alternative solution too
I'll have to see if river has an alternative, I imagine so, but it seems a lot of stuff was lacking last time I looked at it
hyprland for example has this https://wiki.hypr.land/Configuring/Binds/#classic
which works without the application needing to be aware of it
don't think niri has anything next to the official portal support
Oh that is very nice, I didn't know it had that, I kinda want to go back to hyprland but I know I'd rather have all floating windows over two tiling monitors
global shortcuts have been one of the many Wayland debates that went on for years too long
https://old.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/1kkuafo/wayland_an_accessibility_nightmare/?sort=old not what I was looking for, but close enough
Linux turning into the "we know better than the user what they need", the kind of thing they've always insulted Windows/Mac for
a similar blog post about this spurred a lot of changes
I was abour to make a joke about a steam controllers being a valve but I think Valve made that joke already
Wayland accessibility is still pretty terrible unfortunately
and any protocol to improve it would probably get stuck in at least 5 years of bikeshedding
while I get why it's a thing, but it shouldn't come as a detriment to accessibility, it's kinda baffling how it's prevented in it's entirety
It's a shame you'd need an extra device to be able to be accessible, usually at a decent cost
Wayland suffers from the same issue flatpaks do sometimes where they desperately try to enforce security standards where they get really in the way
with no escape hatch
I have made my displeasure with flatpaks known before, and there will not be a day where I won't go on and on about how much I dispise the sandboxing
When your computer is so secure that even you can't use it...
And it's not like Linux was insecure before....
Linux desktop wasn't/isn't exactly super secure
computer can't be hacked if there's no computer to be hacked
it gives the same vibes as rotating passwords, the idea is secure, but the implementation causes lazyness and wanting an easier way and so leading to less secure passwords overall
almost everyone who works somewhere with a regular mandatory password changes is just going to start incorporating something predictable into it so they can remember which one is the newest one
So just have a thing like Android or whatever, some way of telling it that whatever program is safe and allowed to send/receive keystrokes or whatever
I believe security folks no longer recommend it
about time, There was a service I used (don't remember which) that required rotating passwords, I got so fed up with it and having to think of a new password I just stopped using it, given I don't remember the name, guess I must not've missed it that bad XD
that is the idea behind these desktop portals but in Wayland fashion it moved at a snail's pace with everyone arguing about the most insignificant little details.
(With GNOME in the corner saying they fundamentally disagree that it should even exist because they personally don't like it)
gnome is canonnical right?
Oh I thought it was, Would've made sense if it was
once upon a time it was part of GNU
hasn't been in a long time
unfortunately while GNOME has been losing popularity it's still far too popular to discard all their nonsense
especially given RedHat and Ubuntu are large linux userbases
At work i need to 2fa into the server
yeah though Ubuntu desktop is effectively dead to anyone except older folks who don't feel like moving away
idk
Cat tax?
not at my mom's
Awwwww
GNOME my beloathed...
though it's not like Wayland would suddenly move quickly if they vanished. We'd just have removed the most annoying "stakeholder"
the fastest way to get something in Wayland as far as I can tell is for Valve to want it
I feel like I remember someone needing to update their OSS stuff for valve or they'd fork it but I don't remember who, I wanna say KDE?
idk, valve and the KDE foundation work pretty closely together
considering it's the desktop of choice for steamos
Thank you valve for being the sole reason I swapped to linux by showing everything I do is actually possible on linux
re: wayland, I severely miss the ability to open a zip file, drag the file from the archive viewer into a file manager and have it miraculously extracted into the file manager
if you try to implement that kind of interoperability in Wayland they send ninjas to your house
don't get me wrong I'm still not going back to X but still lol
is that just a you thing selph? cause thats what I do all the time, I didn't know that was something that some people can't do?
Do excuse the visible pixels
last time I tried drag and drop it never works properly for me
I think Ark and Dolphin works but only that pairing, and file manager into Firefox borked long ago
Ahhh gotcha
those are the two I use, Still haven't tried nautilous, and now that I know what to change to make pixel art not anti aliased in dolphin I don't think I want to XD
don't worry you have 10 years before they decide on the exact ninjas to send
copying between different dolphin windows... madness... I am a strong advocate of their Split feature
the split feature has been touch and go, not too much of a fan, especially when I can just had two windows with is effectively the same
Also does anyone knows how to disable the stupid middle button to paste ?
There’s an option do disable it in settings but it does not work for every apps.
Apparently it’s due to some app using XWayland but I didn’t find any fixes
Every time I wonder if I should give linux a more serious try, this channel reminds me that it'd be waaaaaay too much effort long-term
no
I try
I think atra has an addiction to pretty chemistry game gifs
Pretty chemistry game gifs are very addicting
does it mean in the centre of each set of nested squares.. or in between the two outside ones
I think there's only really one nested set there
I see 2
There is defo two nested sets, I would assum it means the centre of each set, not the combined centre of both
I expect the one at the left is meant to catch out bots, and the obvious one is the one you're meant to be looking at
you could only click once!
theres loads of nested squares in this one?? wtf
every time I fail a captcha is another part of me that begins to believe I am infact a robot
Then I am utterly clueless
i am too! it just gave up and gave me a "drag this thingy to its shadow"
those ones I can do because it relies on the movement of the mouse rather than the actual ability to complete it perfectly
one thing I will always have over robots is caffine jitters
Is this a color blindness test
i guess it kind of is

It depends on your DE, but there should be a setting
tysm
It's a very pretty game
looks up what's going on with my arch install
"are you doing partial upgrades?"
...mayBE >:(
sigh
ew 3.3GB paccache
I still think @crystal wren should make a Framework mod
aquo I'll have you know this is all your fault (me having to do a system upgrade)
i wonder if theres a way to have like.. preprocessing macros in obsidian
i want a count of my domains 😭
Theyre finally adding a touchscreen
because this is in an attempt to install an sqlite browser
One package has taken the whole thing down
Wow framework has a queue to even view the site atm
oh no they're doing slightly confusing prefixes now
but i guess just one "pro" isn't that bad
Speakers that dont fire down, what a concept
a new laptop?
Framework pro yeah
it's pro cause of the speakers
3 pro features
someday I'll cave and get the really garish transparent bezels and keyboard
I already have a framework laptop I am very much happy with
God i will never buy anything electronics meant for gamers
Or chairs tbh
Plz, no backlights or leds
no GPUs
Do i need a gpu
depends
Opus Magnum 2 will be 3D raytraced you hear it from me first
I thought Zach became a CS professor
he shut down his studio only to turn around and found a new game studio
I don't believe in laptops that are younger than 10
what a sad world we live in
oof
Do i need ram
in case any of you think I'm kidding 😌
so you get like 200gb of ram!
a lot of systems don't generally launch if you don't at least have like half a gig of actual real genuine ram
my previous laptop has passed the 10 years now...
it's finally real
finally acceptable
in my defense, this laptop has a state-of-the-art intel i5 5300U
much more affordable
i am i think
uhm neovim? in this channel we only use vi /j
I use treesitter...
apparently the nvim-treesitter plugin is now archived... I gotta find a new way to load them
I think I can just install the right packages? and it'll work?
wtf
what's treesitter
LSP thingy
also aquo what python linter do you use
Tree-sitter is a parser generator tool and an incremental parsing library. It can build a concrete syntax tree for a source file and efficiently update the syntax tree as the source file is edited. Tree-sitter aims to be:
YES it's working and I just had to uninstall proton-hotfix to make space
a code parser combinator used primarily for either syntax highlighting or for context dependent editing actions like "delete the function body"
"upgrading linux" god I love linux. system upgrades remind me that every time
idk man you presumably just need to put the grammars and the likes in the correct spot?
the .scm files and stuff
ur using linux mint in secret
it took me too long to realise usd as in united states dollar
what if when you updated wine a windows update thing came up
I got a popup yesterday from our vulnerability scan thing at work warning the current version of windows 11 had like 140 known vulnerabilities
- it's windows 11
I've since updated again so I'm safe for now
are you saying they were all patched
other than a low risk vulnerability in inkscape cause of the python version it's using apparently
or that you're safe from the popup
I was using basedpyright, but have been trying out ty
I probably can just use the arch packages then, and it will detect it. I was using a plugin to handle the installation, but I wasnt sure if it was doing some other configuration under the hood to get it working
okay I know people are joking about it being $, but it's ALSO a 3d scene format...
What is it actually in this context
Since I doubt you're using a 3D OS
Pyright? I thought there were only pywrongs?
washedpywrongs
just hating on Python as per usual
did the jellyfin client I'm using get archived or have I been using a half done experimental client....
the latter it seems
that explains why I can't do the basic thing of closing fullscreen with escape
or the time the subtitles were suddenly gigantic so I could only see 2 letters
idk it was called flatpak-desktop so I just used that one
idk if I really thought about it

can't believe u didn't already know
Nintendo wut
homebrew
im sorry the what
oh you dont know what a wii is
so its like a gamecube but a bit overclocked
THE WEBSITE IS SO COOL
i have in fact installed the wii jellyfin client and have been trying it
I don't even know what jellyfin is
media streamining selfhost thing
i dont use my wii, wii u or my jellyfin server but this is still hmm
I keep seeing a video in my youtube feed about a new PC dongle for using the Wii U gamepad
you have a vi
what happened to the other half of your wii
A self-hosted streaming service
like plex but not evil
(idk if plex is evil I have never used it cause people were already switching to jellyfin by the time I set my server up)
I'm not sure what a Nintendo wii is
a hip new console from 20 years ago
i got it again, the correct answer is the center of the weird smeary squares it seems
I don't believe they're evil (?)
But its just safer to do it self hosted
like you mentioned with Jellyfin
At least you own your media
Gooooood morning
May I add u on steam?
For histogram compare purposes
why u never added me
No it's ass
starts rant about how it's not actually paste but a separate registry
afaik it's perfectly possible to have a local NAS delivered by Plex, dad's vast media storage empire has plex at the frontend. though he's mentioned jellyfin a few times so hell if i know what's going on behind the curtain
all i know is i hate networking and networks
New quote added by kittycatcasey as #7941 (https://discordapp.com/channels/137344473976799233/1215712021207720006/1496304648779337758)
Why not, I'm sending you the friend code in dm
I wonder if they'll stop lol, or they'll continue until the main campaign is 10% of the actual game
lmao the latest page's lore is that ||"You can't invent guns with the physics of our universe, stop trying"||
today's
||first time I've used halt outside that one puzzle||
it's not the ||first time I should have used it...but the first time I did||
||halt makes for very convenient solutions when metal/element duplicating glyphs are involved and the Wheels aren't available||
It's a little catalyst!
I opened one of the new puzzles and just....why is it that input:output ratio?
I'm gonna try to do a solve a day and let's see how long that lasts
So quiet today
Everyone actually programming?
No one trying to sell anyone on a Framework?
I'm trying to get DH to make a Framework mod
It's ||just a laptop as a furniture item ||
I was running this SQL query that was taking 30 min
||turns out my credentials was dropped 25 min ago and nothing was executing||
we already have them now there's no point
.qp I own a framework
It used to be my daily driver
But i think the cmos battery is dead and I'm too lazy to fix it rn (I'll do it one day...
I need to Arch my personal laptop ngl
How are y'all??
Okay, what about.....which Linux distro
....I can't even like start a conversation on Linux distros
What about cats
Nail polish?
Pink 🩷
Fine, just trying to relax and sleep before the next morning lecture. What about you?
Yelling at the stupid 2fa
Will you be able to fix it? Or at least sign in?
ive been busy, wish i replied sooner
im doing good tty for asking
I'm signed in it's just a stupid system. I have to 2fa into a server that can only be accessed on the local network
So dumb
...can I sell u on pretty chemistry game?
are you wanting stability or new features?
If you're going arch-based, then go Cachy OS, you can easily manage your kernel (or go onto an LTS cachy OS kernel)
On my laptop I run the LTS kernel only
Stability would be great. I'm using a very old laptop that is getting quite slow
which is linux 6.18
What specs
For stability, debian/devuan (devuan if no systemd) is the best
for new features but still stable..id say maybe fedora?
i mean its not bleeding edge but its more taxing on very low end laptops
I dont recall lol but it essentially is an i5 from 2018 or so with 12gb of RAM and integrated laptops
cachy os is extremely optimized
beats debian in speed, since, well, less stuff, and optimized for your hardware
hmm
id recommend arch
an i5 u can go to debian
I check email and place stock trades a like
Haven't played a video game made after 2018
Hmm, yeah Id say debian
Or anything 3d
Uwuntu!
do you prefer KDE or GNOME?
I used Cinnamon lol
Or Nyarch.
If you're comfortable with Cinnamon, go ahead and use it
Also a Pink and an Orange. Can we acquire the rest of the rainbow
Debian allows I believe most desktop environments
Are you a init/openrc warrior
Laptop has a (broken) Ubuntu partition
if u are, then let me know in advance
some people dont want systemd, which is pretty much every distribution has
I'm not sure what those are
good, then use debian
essentially its an orchestrator, it knows when to start things when the system boots, which services run in the background, and how services are monitored and restarted if they fail
Or I could go back and fix the stupid Ubuntu issues
systemd
id recommend no ubuntu if your using a desktop
id recommend debian over ubuntu for stability
im an ubuntu hater, dont ask me questions about ubuntu, its only good for the web, not the desktop (my personal view)
normally I'd discourage anyone from using Debian but eh I doubt a missing WiFi driver would be much of a barrier to you...
For no gaming and no activity but browsing
Debian is usually the case for them
I wouldn't encourge debian if you had a cpu newer than 2020
maybe 2022+
Yeah I had to fix that on laptop before this lol
I use Debian on my server but on desktop I always end back up on arch
Legitimately though....why do you hate Ubuntu?
Debian: The old stable rock, it works, but it doesnt have latest stuff, but as l ong as your not on a bleeding edge setup, you are fine
Fedora: The middle point, its stable, but it get new features very fast, no where near as stable as debian
Arch: You are a lunatic, like me
arch btw?
openSuse?
Ubuntu
It's a bit clunky for me personally, and it has a lot of telemetry, sure I can disable it, but i dont like it
However, I love using their servers, they are great
Hmm, sometimes good sometimes shit (from meme)
my shallow argument against Ubuntu is that I think itself default color scheme is very ugly
Manjaro is the key to having a broken OS in the next week, at least some people depict it as such
I don't like how they customized the DE
I recall....I thibk the last time I did Ubuntu I installed server and then added cinnamon
Cinnamon looks nice, works, pretty stable, huge technical debt, but thats only for the latest tech
also don't really like snaps
GNOME is great, but its macOS but for linux
Cinnamon looks like windows 10 lol
gnome is evil...
At work we use Red Hat
hey, crumble, let's not use slurs in this chat, okay? im very uncomfortable that you brought up the word "snap", that's against my vocabulary
you are banned

I think i might want to go for a tiling
snaps are propietary mess
join the niri cult
flatpaks are great, but not for everything
appimages are great
i love appimages
all apps i distribute r in app images
Tbh cachey (sp?) might be fine
cachey sp whats that
flatpaks are alright if the sandboxing isn't a pain in the ass
i tried to use my friends once
i couldnt figure out how to open an app 😭
cachyos niri version for atra
(sp?) just means I'm unsure of the spelling
I prefer sandboxing, but it can be annoying
very, very, annoying
ahhh
We use Red Hat at work lol
solid work
stable as heck
using for general public? never
i assume they're on glibc 2.17
Xfce I think as the windows manager
most companies on red hat are on 2.17
I'm absolutely nit using xfce shit is so unstable
xfce is very stable, its used in all bsd systems
gaming on it is another story
id recomend not to game on it
don't think xfce is surviving the Wayland transition
I literally spent a week at work with no functioning windows manager because I had long running sims open and xfce had half crashed
it has to, every BSD system is dependant on it, well
its not dependant but, its used extensively
Pissed me off so much
never run games on xfce
or sims, nothing
never run in xfce only walk
xfce is supposed to be for networking
thats it, i dont give it any more credit than being the interface for servers
Ohhh!! hmm, wow thats weird
thunar is a pretty nice file manager
its good
dolphin is superior.
i stand on that rock
I used to run 2 week simulations that loved to crash a week in
