Wait, how do you know what a console is?

#

The first generation of home consoles went from 1972 to 1976.

#

Well, it was produced until 1983, but the second generation started in 1976.

steel kraken

I enjoyed my pipeline of Amiga -> (OG) Xbox -> Xbox 360 -> PC gaming
with the parallel tracks of GBA, GBA XP, (OG) DS, and then also wii->wiiu->switch->switch2

#

though I technically did pc gaming during the xbox/xbox360 era as well

cinder karma
#

When were consoles stopped

#

2010s?

#

And handheld and mobile phones took over

steel kraken
#

I mean the switch 2 was last year and at least docks to be a console

This is so awesome

Yay!

steel kraken

hardware wise, xboxs were always just single purpose PC's from memory, and PS4+ is pretty vanilla hardware wise as well from memory, the PS3 had something interesting going on I think, even if the early ones could run linux fine

That one is included in my favorite console Wii U because you can homebrew that to run RetroArch (not to mention that you can inject arbitrary titles into Virtual Console releases) (disclaimer for mods: ROMs can be acquired legally by backing them up manually; I do not support or encourage piracy).

little furnace
#

If I made that sound awful, that's kinda because it is.

sand frost
#

I was confused because I thought a switch was a console, but also consoles are often just little boxes you have to connect to a TV?

#

a switch you can just play on, no TV needed

#

i mostly know that you can get xbox controllers because people use them for robots

# sand frost I was confused because I thought a switch was a console, but also consoles are o...

Yes. You can plug a Switch into the tv, but their biggest selling point is that they're basically a mini portable console, like a Nintendo DS sorta if you're familiar with one of those at all

So Switch works like a console in the plugging into tv and then using controllers or whatever, but it can be used as both. You just leave the part that stays plugged in into the tv while you hold the screen part

#

Gifs for visuals

sand frost
#

I know what a switch is because I took a design class once where someone was making alternative shaped handles for it

#

I think that because i grew up with iMacs my idea of "what a computer is by default" is a little wonky

#

like yeahhhh I guesss the windows boxes are computers, but they're like weird faceless computers

devout vault
#

Yeah the whole point of the switch was kinda that it combined nintendo's standalone console line (n64, gamecube, wii, ...) with their portable one (gameboy, DS, 3DS, ...)

dusty pollen
sand frost
#

The person doing this had very large hands and mentioned it was clearly not designed for this

safe dragon
#

my maybe controversial opinion is that with the exception of the Wii remote, Nintendo has never made any ergonomic default controller

#

the joycons are an affront to ergonomic design that's for sure

designed for hands no larger than my 3 year old niece's

little furnace
#

To be more serious, I think the GameCube controller and the Wii U gamepad are both kinda ergonomic, but the latter is very heavy.

#

But I love the placement of the sticks on the Wii U controllers.

#

Wii U Pro Controller (the gamepad was similar):

#

I've only found one other model with sticks like these, and I had to import these from China for 45$ shipping.

#

Still testing how good they actually are, because the controllers themselves only cost 20$ each. I might start importing them commercially if they are good.

crystal wren
#

A controller I actually quite like is, no joke, the Stadia controller.

And no, I gave them no money for the service or hardware. It was towards the end when they were just giving it all away with a Chromecast I kinda wanted.

pliant snow
#

The Wii U pro controller is maybe my favorite controller ever

#

problem is they're a massive pain to get paired to bluetooth

little furnace
#

It has Bluetooth and supports PCs as well. They don't advertise that one as for PCs, I don't know why. The next model is explicitly compatible to PCs and... PS3?

I have to ask

I've played a video game with a controller like once in my life

#

Is this normal

rain apex
#

if ur on computers yea that seems normal

prisma flume
#

imo third-person games are generally better on controller, probably because first-person games are generally awful on controller so console-first developers put more effort into making them playable instead

safe dragon
#

my apparently controversial opinion is that precision platformers are almost always much better on a keyboard than a controller

#

in Celeste I constantly accidentally went diagonal when I didn't intend to or went straight when I intended to go diagonal on a controller

#

on keyboard that has never happened because you have much better control and tactile feedback on what you're inputting

#

a joystick is too imprecise and using the dpad sucks too

little furnace
#

But otherwise, I kinda agree. I also kinda don't, because in Hollow Knight for example I wish I had been able to move in more than eight directions.

We are not able to provide support if you run into trouble or compatibility issues with Android SMAPI; please use the discord linked on the Android SMAPI github.

IMPORTANT: This is a highly experimental build and may be prone to glitches, bugs, or incompatibilities. Please see the wiki instructions for more information regarding installing the unofficial Android port of SMAPI for Stardew Valley 1.6.

Do not harass mod authors to make Android specific compatibility patches.

How do you trim them? I've heard that it can be dangerous, so I have never tried it for my cats.

Anyway her actual name is onyx, but she has a small cult of mod authors under the title Sneeb (as one does)

simple dragon

She'll tolerate it up to a point without a fight but I need to keep her from scuttling away mid trim

little furnace

How do you know how much you can trim? I know that they have nerve endings somewhere in the claws, and I was always unsure how much I could trim, so I never tried it at all.

There are visual guides you can look up, it's not too hard to tell where the quick is. As long as you're trimming conservatively it's reasonably safe

safe dragon
hushed raven
#

There are so many things that wayland has issues with that I didn't realise I used, autoclicking, global hotkeys that aren't for the DE, Why are these not able to be done nicely wayland???

safe dragon
#

the latter can be done through the global shortcuts desktop portal but it'd require the application and your distro to support it

#

the former... no idea

#

i didn't even know it didn't work

hushed raven
#

because of the way wayland handles mouse input (according to a person on reddit, and another person who made an x11 autoclicker) you can't actually register clicks without some janky work around that only works on some mice

safe dragon
#

the global hotkeys thing not working is mainly due to Wayland's keylogger protections. The desktop portal allows an application to request being told when a specific keybind is used

hushed raven
#

I'll have to look into the portal thing, I very unfamiliar with them but it would be quite useful to know for the future

hushed raven

while I get why it's a thing, but it shouldn't come as a detriment to accessibility, it's kinda baffling how it's prevented in it's entirety

safe dragon
#

Wayland made Linux usable to me but alas it made it literally unable to others

hushed raven
#

It's a shame you'd need an extra device to be able to be accessible, usually at a decent cost

Wayland suffers from the same issue flatpaks do sometimes where they desperately try to enforce security standards where they get really in the way

#

im an ubuntu hater, dont ask me questions about ubuntu, its only good for the web, not the desktop (my personal view)

safe dragon
#

normally I'd discourage anyone from using Debian but eh I doubt a missing WiFi driver would be much of a barrier to you...

weak obsidian
#

Debian is usually the case for them

#

I wouldn't encourge debian if you had a cpu newer than 2020

#

maybe 2022+
