you are green you have the power

prisma flume
#

im sorry my name isnt FREIEREN

hardy jewel
#

unfortunately barb is immune to mod action as she ranks above us all

red crest
#

apology accepted 🙂‍↕️

steel kraken
#

You people talk too much.
but None of the junimos are that scary when being off-topic in on-topic channels as pathos

cinder karma
#

Yes they were Betacam!

devout vault
steel kraken
#

the puffercop during 1.6 modding alpha was a threat and a promise

hardy jewel
#

I should say equal

devout vault
#

Also while you're here: I am once again petitioning for the role to be renamed to Stardewveloper

devout vault
prisma flume
#

i am petitioning for the role to have a better, sexier colour scheme

red crest
#

I don't think I've ever seen Pathos be off topic myself

cinder karma
#

Right, Sony is pretty fun

hardy jewel
#

I don't think I've mentioned this but if you actually want the role colours to change casey we could probably do that

devout vault
cinder karma
#

Minidisc!

hardy jewel
#

you're one of the only devs who's active enough for it to matter

red crest
#

I actually really like the developer colour scheme and would trade it for mine in a heartbeat

cinder karma
#

Mr. CA, hire Button

red crest
#

Sorry to the other Junis, I just am not one for green 😔

cinder karma
#

(I think Button would be a great hire.)

devout vault
#

Like the various hybrid roles

hardy jewel
#

I was trying to do a bit but it fucks up my roles too

red crest
hardy jewel
devout vault
#

Oh slitherlegs goes over junimo now?

red crest
#

Pastels!!

cinder karma
#

Has it only been eight days

#

I've aged six years today

red crest
#

Maybe 9

red crest
#

This job market stuff is easy 😌

devout vault
#

I don't think anyone but CA himself gets to decide on who is hired

red crest
#

What is 258

hardy jewel

barb is CA, though?

steel kraken
sand frost
#

hello! what about yourself tho

red crest

The colour scheme of Elizabeth's avatar would make a nice role gradient

devout vault

I accidentally pressed some keys and got worried I accidentally locked the channel

cinder karma
#

Button banned all of us

steel kraken
#

Good to see it wasn't personal

sand frost
#

i have to admit today was an above average math day, in the sense that i met with a colleague in the math dept to talk math stuff

cinder karma
#

Yay!

devout vault
cinder karma
#

I literally spent an hour today analyzing one sentence

dreamy vigil
#

Can't believe we're objectifying blueberry now.

red crest

Y'all overestimate how much power a mere apple boi has or would wield. I've not entered the level of comfort yet where I can mess with permissions or things as a joke for fear I'll be stripped of my titles SDVpufferpensive

turns out this is true in reverse as well

(The on-topicness summoned me.)

Let he with the most refreshing role gradient cast the first off topic stone. Glory be to Pathos in this regard.

sand frost
cinder karma
#

Why did I think I wanted to be a fjckinf lawyer

red crest
#

I say this with the utmost subjectivity and respect for those who came before me and chose the colours for all the roles, but there is none I like less than the local legend gradient.

sand frost
#

my mom says being a lawyer was not a fun time

#

so i cannot explain it either, atra

red crest
#

It's great that I'm a junimo now so I don't have to worry about having it

devout vault
red crest
#

Thank you! I appreciate that.

steel kraken

i kinda like it

prisma flume
#

finest & smoothest role gradients: junimo, mod author legend
crunchiest role gradients: stardew developer, local legend

sand frost
#

one day...

cinder karma
#

Is that why you keep turning me white

red crest
#

I would accept a junimo legend role on the basis of uniqueness making it more appealing by default.

cinder karma
#

Puh-kahn

prisma flume
#

i get the symbolism of having the whole gamut from villager to desperado but also it's quite crunchy haha

red crest
#

But I was already denied a junimo slitherlegs SDVpufferpensive

red crest
sand frost
#

I'm only lvl 1859 apparently, so that "one day" will take a bit

steel kraken

im only like lvl 450 so I still have a long time to go

sand frost

i also talk less here than i used to

devout vault

I've got 457 more levels to go. Too many past hiatuses, smh

Alright I have to go swimming

sand frost

Local Legend is the colours of the stardrop

devout vault
#

I've love a lightblue->darkblue role but I don't want to be accused of being joja

prisma flume
#

imo if it's sampling the stardrop palette the bright pink and dark purple tones could be good

steel kraken
#

Stardew developers are very much joja

prisma flume
#

visibly still stardrop, visibly still desperado+

cinder karma
#

Feel free to assign me white again lol

#

That is very funny

devout vault
hardy jewel
#

I spent so much time trying to find a good stardrop gradient and this one was what everyone else liked so it's never changing SDVpuffertriumph

prisma flume

and also makes modding/artist legend roles even more exceptionally super 🙂‍↕️

quite the surreal experience, and probably one that's no longer a thing as I imagine it's 100% discord now

I think? I still have an irc-to-discord relay running for moddota and my personal server, but no one is in the irc channel anymore

prisma flume
#

i'm used to bb forums. even non-compact discord is small form factor to me

fleet wren
#

I'll still fondly remember IRC, or forums, but yeah I'm not hopping back on HexChat anytime ever

pliant snow

I haven't looked for a while, but there were a few servers I was in with long-time IRC history where people still used the bridge

of course with Discord rapidly undergoing enshittification who knows

devout vault

I was never in any big IRC channels

There's an SDV forum? Someone should make an announcement about that.

For anyone old enough to remember, were you team PHPBB or team IPB?

devout vault

(Yes I did that)

fleet wren
#

SMF

devout vault
#

(Technically still have it, but would need to figure out how to get it running again)

marble jewel
#

In some of my older communities, there was the old threaded vs flat boards debate

devout vault
#

I always preferred flat. It wasn't until I started using reddit that I got used to the idea of threaded

marble jewel
#

I came up around threaded forums so flat felt like a downgrade to me even though it kind of became the more popular choice

devout vault
#

How much do I miss forums, and how much is it just nostalgia...

marble jewel
#

Did you have any of those communities where the last 5 years of posts were various members just replying "Last"

fleet wren
#

hmm yeah I probably just miss the ppl on this old forum I used to frequent

#

(it was a small Insaniquarium/PVZ fan forum which is mainly known for hosting the most popular Insaniquarium save editor)

devout vault
#

The forum I mainly remember is the dead one

#

(well, forum/wiki)

marble jewel
#

Insaniquarium, that's a game I haven't heard in a long time. I wish it would get ported to tablets.

cinder karma

What

marble jewel

It's like tablets are the perfect form factor for that game

devout vault
#

Oh, there was also dreamviews I guess?

And the SFML one of course

Insaniquarium Deluxe is on steam for like $5.

heck remove Bejeweled from that list

Last I heard about the OG Dev of PvZ and Insaniquarium was when he entered a game jam and made a Game Maker game involving an Octopus with like guns for limbs

#

Octogeddon

It's neat and all that he got his payday, but his creations could have been so much more if he maintained control

If you were in the position of hosting forums around this time, I remember people insisting either PHPBB or IPB were the best option

cinder karma

One of these sounds like php

#

Also I wasn't a forums hosting person

steel kraken
#

I dont think there was a forum that wasn't in php

marble jewel
#

I remember coding a syntax highlighter for both of them for a community I hosted

cinder karma

Probably late 90s

steel kraken

at one point moddota was going to look into making a new forum using modern architecture and design it around cloudflare caching everything, but we didn't make any progress

cinder karma

MySpace was just very representative of what the internet was at the time. For many, it became their first time socializing with others across the globe.

I think what I miss about it was how transparent it was. Before the internet became driven by algorithms optimized to encourage addictive behaviors.

Violently murdering your past self is a standard rite when transitioning, so you can move on from "dead man walking" to "living woman walking" (or dead woman -> living man if trans masc, etc.). I don't see the problem here.

cinder karma
#

What's sonic

little furnace
little furnace
devout vault
# little furnace I'm a huge Sonic fan, but the driving itself really doesn't feel as good as in M...

I'm not a huge sonic fan, but not a huge mario fan either (but definitely more familiarity with mario & co).

I struggle with drifting in air segments in sonic, and am not super fond of drifting in water. No arguments about the default drifting really.

The key part of what makes sonic greater to me is the gadget system. It just adds so much more to the game than the difference in ease of drifting takes away. Plus, there's gadgets affecting drifting too (though I don't use any)

little furnace
#

That's true, though I tend to not focus on that really. Admittedly my favorite way of playing Mario Kart is without items, so I prioritize how the driving feels much more than anything else.

Both are great games, but the racing game I played most is actually F-Zero 99.

devout vault
#

Ah, well, I play them for the chaos

Last I played I was using the "get double the items from each pickup" gadget. Yes, I hardly ever got first place, and regularly didn't even get top 5. But the fun items are worth it

little furnace
devout vault
cinder karma
#

(Also programming is fun)

little furnace
cinder karma
#

(I'm learning perl)

crystal wren
little furnace
#

I took my first steps with Scratch. I still love it dearly.

safe dragon
cinder karma
#

I think I'm too old for scratch

sand frost
#

My brothers started with scratch

#

In late elementary school

#

I do think it’s good for kids, though I wasn’t as interested at that age

#

I think what language I’d recommend kind of depends on why you’d want to learn

#

I have my students do python or Matlab because that’s what the existing code is in and we use it like a tool, not primarily focused on programming

dusty pollen
#

I have my qualms with scratch, especially if the goal is actually knowing how to program soonish

sand frost
#

But someone who wants to learn for programmming’s sake I would recommend some kind of typed language

#

I also think adults probably learn differently than kids

little furnace
#

I feel learning the logic is the most important part. I think Scratch does that very well. If you learn any specific language you might pick up bad habits or get too used to a specific way of doing things.

rain apex
#

I like turtle graphics

marble jewel
#

While certain languages can encourage "bad habits" I think in the learning phase it's important to not stress too much over which language, and really just try to develop a programming mindset

rain apex
marble jewel
#

The nitty gritty details should come after you've developed some amount of proficiency (in whichever language you choose)

cinder karma
#

Start with labview

dusty pollen
#

I don’t think other languages are any likelier to lead to bad habits than scratch, which strongly limits data structures SDVpufferthinkblob I think for most adults it may be better to just jump into any random programming language like matt said

little furnace
#

My other go-to for learning logic is Prolog, but only if I'm there to guide a bit, and only the simple standard stuff like a family tree.

cinder karma
#

Jk

safe dragon
cinder karma
#

Start with lua

cinder karma
#

You have to learn them carefully

safe dragon
#

the rule is that it can be accessed globally regardless of where it is smh

marble jewel
#

I think it helps to choose a language where you're able to see the results quickly and that overlaps with your other interests

dusty pollen
#

python is actually decent ish for new starters in that it’s very accessible but tbf it’s a bit of a nightmare to transition to other languages if you only know python, so something like js or typescript might be better!

cinder karma
#

Like labview!

#

I'm being a troll

#

Start with c# or typescript

safe dragon
#

I started with C# and you can see how that turned out...

little furnace
#

How about Rust /s

safe dragon
#

tbh the biggest barrier to programming I've seen is just getting through the initial hurdle of learning to just write things that do stuff

#

so many get stuck on wanting to do it "correctly" immediately and then don't do anything because they don't know enough to even know what that means

cinder karma
#

Like @crystal wren I started with VBA

safe dragon
#

whatever language lowers the hurdle enough for people to just fuck around and make things, will work as a start

cinder karma
#

I'm damaged for life

safe dragon
#

I did not start with VBA thankfully. I did not touch VBA till I helped a friend with some excel macros and was horrified by what I saw

#

sure

marble jewel
#

I wanna say I started with Javascript making a website in the web 2.0 days. Did some coding in proprietary languages for game development. And my first "serious" language I did was VBA at a job.

little furnace
#

I actually didn't start with Scratch, I started with Lego Mindstorms.

I "technically" touched C++ and Java at different points in school, but I don't count those because it was all the basic textbook lessons. i.e. Hello World

devout vault
# cinder karma Every time I touch device physics I'm in awe

Same with a lot of science/tech stuff when I think about it, but the difference is we've have a bunch of different people with separate specialized knowledge on how parts work, that have worked together (intentionally or not) to make the marvels we have today.

I mean more like "someone handed you a device that reads your mind to determine what food you are most in the mood for, searches the entire timeline to find it, and teleports/timetravels it from whoever was about to eat it onto a mysteriously floating plate in front of you". We'd have no clue how any part of that could feasibly work 😛

safe dragon
#

I have a vague understanding of how plates work

#

perhaps even floating plates

marble jewel
#

I've interviewed about a dozen entry-level engineers for 3 positions, and part of my questioning is to suss out how much they depend on AI-assisted coding. Answer - almost everyone uses it heavily.

devout vault
# safe dragon I have a vague understanding of how plates work

It's a plate that the device manifested into existence perfectly suited for the given food, keeping it at just the right temperature and freshness no longer how long it sits out, but also not feels too warm or too cold for you to touch.

It also has RGB despite not being powered in any way whatsoever
