I've seen that one
fun thing really is that I saw all of these at the same company
one with a pen testing team they hired once a year to verify the security
some of these were found by them to be fair...
my favorite I found there was an eye button in the user detail pages where you could unhide their password
there's just something highly amusing about being so blatant and obvious with the fact that you're not hashing their password
Just "oh yeah here's their password just press the button to view it"
I once found out one my moms passwords because they emailed it to her in plaintext in a big font, and she opened the email while I was talking to her
(from a forgot password thing, I think)
Who even thinks of presenting your password to you like an 'exclusive' coupon code in a marketing email?
I once got "your password looks too similar to one of your previous passwords"
UGH
Slightly different (and less bad in that particular way), but I always hate the sites that say "you can't use any of your last 10 passwords" or something
ok now y'all gotta be memeing right
Especially when I go to reset my password and it gives me that error, but then the pasword reset has started so they won't let me use the old password anymore
For example if my password was freedom
I wish
that's sad
I wish
I would type 3733366 to authentic to the phone tree
good old T3 typing
clearly that's encrypted
looks nothing like your password
I have zero idea how this is safe
The only time I’ve ever dealt with this was the smash bros brawl stage editor
It was very confusing
Found a video that showed the smash bros one
Wut
Also the japanese version
Wut
Also in unrelated I've gotten 76% of the gas for this car at a Costco
I thought this would be higher
Someone told me many years ago that T9 was the predictive typing version and the regular version without prediction before that was called T3 but that doesn't seem to be true.
T9 is indeed the predictive typing version but the regular version was just called multitap
(T9 also uses more than 9 keys btw smh a scam)
I love predictive T9. I even tried to get that on my smartphone. Feels way easier to type with big buttons. But the prediction algorithms aren't that good compared to mainstream mobile keyboards, so I gave up on that.
I got so fast with T9... then it went away.
I never got good at T9 cause I never used my phone back then
my provider had some requirement where you had to send at least 1 text a year or they would disable your sim card
this happened to me like 3 times
there were times where I sent a text just to avoid reaching a year
What kind of provider was that?
I've heard horror conditions of American providers, but not European ones.
it was fairly common for pay as you go sim cards at the time
I would not be able to tell you my provider. I have no idea
Back at that point of T9... my guess is Orange.
lmao nah though my dad did have Orange
I did not care about my phone in the slightest. For like 3 years my phone just sat there on a shelf near the entrance of our house
I did not bring it with me at all
I'm so glad that I never had any of these issues.
to date that experience more... I thought it was not really useful to have cause if I needed to call I could just use the landline phone of whoever I was with
In college I had paygo
The minimum was $100/year
I barely used that phone. Had Google voice and did most of my calls off that
Texts too
All of that changed when I was like 17 I think and people were buying iPods that could play games and shit and I wanted to be able to play doodle jump during school lunch breaks too.
Though I continued to use pay as you go till I was 20 and had started talking to people on discord and telegram almost every waking hour
part of it was also that I missed out on the entire Pokemon Go craze cause I had no data plan and couldn't play it
Doodle what
What's a video game
What's a phone?
what is anything? #deepphilosophyhours
what is nothing?
They always ask What's a computer, but no one asks how's a computer
how's a computer do that
How did we teach sand to do math?
Asml
yeah asml actually invented the transistor
Or I guess before LLMs it's not correct to say "teach" sand to do math, more like "trick" sand to do math
post LLMs they can't do math anymore
It's come full circle
We tricked sand to do math, and then tricked math to do everything else (except for math)
after all these years we've finally tricked sand into doing math wrong
Come on, Atra. Where's your open source EUV lithography plan?
we've tricked sand into doing 5 billion math equations per second so it can recreate the illusion of a human doing math wrongly
Proof that we're living in the Matrix
we've developed a program that can write sentences but cannot count letters. A program that does billions of math calculations per second but cannot give you the sum of two numbers
So in other words, it wouldn't graduate high school
but simultaneously it can ace a master's philosophy exam
"Are You Smarter than an LLM?"
You're welcome. Please feel free to make a YouTube show. I expect 20% royalties.
reminds me of that one test of every popular "vision-capable" models, and their utter incapability to tell whether two lines will intersect
because they don't do shit like image analysis, they just go "statistically what a human being is most likely to say when asked such a question"
It makes all of those staged demos that much more ridiculous when they show AI doing live interpretations of audio, video, and text.
if it makes you feel better japanese mobile keyboards still look like that smash bros example. your skills are transferable!!!
it's true
First there was T9 to master, and then for a time physical keyboards became the norm, and now we're all on touchscreens
Brain implant is next
Brain implant to most efficiently convey information from humans is the next step, brain implants working in the reverse direction is the final step
You know what's more efficient than instantly conveying information? Making your information predetermined.
at some point I accepted automatic autocorrect on my phone and my touchscreen typing skills vanished
when I turn off autocorrect now I type complete gibberish
thankfully I still have to know how to spell to use my pc keyboard
Anyone remember like 20+ years ago when everyone thought we'd be dictating by voice to control our computers?
You don't need a keyboard anymore, because instead you can clumsily talk to your computer
yeah and then everyone realised voice dictation kind of sucks
I remember seeing that one infomercial a lot about... what was it, Dragon something? for voice commands for your computer
Yes
Dragon natural language stuff! I remember that.
Tiny Button thought that was so cool at the time
isn’t dragon still a leader in transcription software?
I just googled "Dragon natural language stuff" and one of the results was someone calling Dragon the gold standard in a copywriting context, so probably?
More accurate interpretations of voice is probably one of the things that LLMs are actually well-suited for, so that future may still come yet. The difficulty now becomes, I don't really like talking or hearing my voice for that matter.
Oh cool. Just need to start re-learning Japanese!
Why use voice when fingers do faster?
Because my hands are tied behind my back
It'll be a plot point in a crime drama. The kidnappers left the victim without a mouth gag, and they managed to escape using Alexa.
alexa told them it doesn’t understand what they’re saying and started blaring spotify. they never made it out
I watched a documentary recently called War of the Worlds (2025) and it told me that Amazon's products can literally save the world, so I'm sure Alexa can handle something like this
It's not godawful at meeting minutes which i lime
Yeah at work that's the one thing it's been really helpful for - notes and action items
We use Copilot with Facilitator at my job, and it really does summarize things well
I have not watched that movie (nor will I ever) but I read that the climax involves ||an Amazon Prime drone delivering a USB drive containing the software that the protagonist needs to defeat the alien invasion|| and I'm stuck between deciding whether that's so shameless it's brilliant or just, well, shameless
They have the mobile data connectivity to be in constant video communication with each other, but not for transferring files from a usb stick by any other means
the only way Amazon can possibly top that is remaking Wall-E but with Amazon replacing BnL and being depicted as the good guy all along
With how corporatized all of the major media production companies are becoming, having feature-length movies be a 2-3 hour advertising spot seems inevitable
|| The drone got flipped upside down and the only way they could fix it was by bribing a homeless person to expose themselves to the danger of being vapourized with a $1000 Amazon gift card to flip it back over.||
||Proof that trickle-down economics works||
gift cards are such a strange and stupid thing
like yes let me turn these 10 dollars into 10 dollars but it only works in some places
fantastic for fraud though
Sometimes u can turn 10 dolla into 12 dolla
Big company propaganda made people believe that gift cards are thoughtful while cash is not
Sometimes u pay tax twice 😌
There is more "perceived value" in a $20 Amazon Gift card than a $20 bill
damn that's an effective 16.67% discount
It might be limited to my own environment but I feel like this isn't working as much anymore
The problem is that gifts have an overall net loss in perceived value. It's been studied. Anything you spend on whatever doesn't typically translate into equal or more value to the recipient
And that's taking value as a construct rather than as a monetary measurement
my family does birthdays in the most pragmatic "boring" way. The person whose birthday is coming up just creates a list with enough on there to align with the agreed upon budget
and then we just buy the stuff on there
gifts are never really a surprise we know what it is already
Spoken like a person who doesn't get regularly gift cards from the red cross
I'd prefer a boring birthday over what the society norms are. Like if for my Birthday you did some grocery shopping for me, I'd probably appreciate that more than some of the thoughtful gifts that people come up with like a novelty mug that made me think of them
“hold on, let me take my Amazon Prime™ Air Delivery Drone™ (patent pending) to deliver this memory stick!”
actually my bday is this thursday and I'll be gifted money that I have promised to then use to fund a part of the cost of a good food processor
so they're not even giving me anything
they're just depositing money into my bank account
🌈
They are investing in the crumble food processor trust fund
yes
How is the roi do they get better meal next time they come by
For my wedding gift registry, I used a funding site where people could contribute whatever they wanted towards different activities
Ultimately it didn't directly fund any of those activities, it was most just like a pool of money I could use for whatever, but it helped people to think they were buying me a "swim with the dolphins"
I'm not even celebrating my bday in my own home. I'm going to my mom's and doing it there cause it's more pragmatic since my mom, dad and sister (and niece) all live within walking distance of each other
we're not big on parties frankly we just want to get them out of the way
we do them cause of some perceived obligation pushed onto us by no one
There's those 5 languages of love or something thing and if I were to rank mine, gift giving would be just into the ground so low you can't even see it
Same
there have actually been years where one of us just said like "yeah sorry I just don't have anything to put on the wish list. Just come visit for a dinner or something and we'll call it good enough"
Tbh dad has gotten the message (he gets me one thing I asked for...stuff like "hey dad can u bring me a pair of glasses, a new seal for my instant pot, and windshield wipers for my car")
Mom....tries
I haven't celebrated birthday in years tbh
It just seems like bother I usually just go buy myself milktea or smth
Mom gets me skincare
birthdays meant something when I had no disposable income but nowadays it's like... If it's useful I've probably already bought it
To be fair I also get her skincare
I don't think my mom even owns moisturizer
neither does my sister
my mom's going on vacation during her own bday this year
good stuff
I treat myself to AYCE sushi on my birf
||I also do it every other month but shh||
sushi was the big thing I looked forward to for birthdays but that has kinda just died due to a combination of at first covid and then my sister trying to have a kid and not wanting to risk raw fish
and then she actually had a child and she didn't want to risk having a 0-2 yo have raw fish
and now she's trying for a damn child again
I want my sushi

we used to have a tradition of making sushi together for christmas but that is also no longer feasible with a hyperactive 2 year old demanding attention
Murdering Godot is no longer enough to sate his bloodthirst
oh no
I'm gonna need to buy more plushes to keep myself safe
don't want it to be your turn
Exactly
Atra we've covered this. That would require actually owning Rust stuff, which I refuse to do 😛
What about this stuff
1 Quart Evapo-Rust™ Rust Remover https://share.google/GFjQcduUzgrZl7sPt
Does it work on this channel?
Try it!
every time I've looked at how macros get used in the C/C++ land I understand why higher level languages have avoided them like the plague and invent stuff like source generators and partial classes instead
This is systemverilog
Stupid questions: what is a book you're looking forward to reading
the only fiction book I read is harry potter and the methods of rationality, either in written form or audio book.
and then just go again when I have the desire for book
its long enough that going back to the start again is fine
Amazon.com: Symphony in C: Carbon and the Evolution of (Almost) Everything: 9780393358629: Hazen, Robert M.: Books https://share.google/DhbGhksb10yR8a44Q
I checked this one from library
is that the one with professor pepsi
Wheel of Time: Knife of Dreams. I read the entire series up to the tenth book, then I read the prequel that was released around that time, then I realized that I forgot the beginning and re-read everything again, and now (at the end of the eight book) I kinda feel for the first time that I understand everything. So I finally want to read the 11th book. Still two books to go, though.
Age of Miracles
It was recommended to me by a friend bc I liked Life As We Knew It
I liked the start but I don’t like the end. Also some of the middle. Hmm.
I haven’t reread it in either ages or ever, but I remember liking it less and less either as it went on or as I got older
I read it at one point, can't recall how long ago
I should finish Unsong at some point
I recall it mostly from a very stupid project
My answer is I'm in Love with the Villainess books 4 and 5
Where we markov chained it with meeting notes
Which lol
I didn't like hpmor either tbh
(They're out, series is finished. I just need to read them still)
Then again when do I read fiction anymore
i exclusively read factual interest books about wood and gardens
it's very easy on the drama which is refreshing
I have a book about wood but it’s “Structural Design in Wood”
I do love tomato
It’s sort of a dry book
Picked it up out of a free book pile
Well that won't do, tomatos need water to grow
...I may have misread and thought you said a book about tomatos
Should get Elizabeth a book on tomato
a book about wood
Is petrified wood considered wood or stone?
The fact that I just purchased this to clean rust off of some old equipment
omg...a buebewwy is typing (i love ur name sm)
oh i don't do much study, just picking up ideas and plans. a lot of what i read is in techniques as applied to buddhist gardens and tea houses, symbolism of evergreens and other hardy plants, broader design so as to capture landscape as scenery, elements of non-flowering gardens, evocative stone arrangements, imagery of sacred sites, things like that
out of curiosity, what's your favorite flower? ^^
i love gardens, i wish i had one
i've seen a few of those buddhist gardens, they are very pleasent
hard to name a single one. i love plumeria for the aroma that to me is the essence of summer. murraya as well as one of those all-encompassing perfumes that sets the tone for the season, but for something more dramatic, epiphyllum is just an incomparable flower, overwhelming in size and scent but not even lasting a single night
very nice flowers : )
i do also like roses of course for all the usual reasons but creeping roses are asshole bastard plants that hunger for blood
very true
i wish to have a large garden, with many flowers one day, my favorites are tulips
however, i don'
i don't care for insects*
so, it'll be a unique experience loll
ahh i like tulips a lot. i don't think i could ever bother with bulbs myself though, i'm fine with them being annuals and all but the uncertainty of whether the bulbs will naturally survive or whether they need to be over-wintered someplace dark just sounds like too much hassle
same goes for narcissus i suppose
i love insects, it's lovely knowing all these critters come to the flowers and plants
But... oxygen is important as well.
plants and insects are the foundation of the world. if people say they don't like either i just can't comprehend it. it's like disliking air
Yeah but if I plant plant i tend to like edible plants
Like basil
And tomato
And luffa
And pecans
have you actually planted pecans
no but i love eating them on pies : )
No but as a kid we used to go out to the local university and gather them
pe-cone, obviously (/s)
i've never heard anyone in uk or aus say anything other that peeCAN
Puh kahn
so many variants- 👀
Yeah this is how I've heard it
wat
here its only Pee-Can, its funny each region is unique
I have no idea what you all are talking about. What is that in IPA?
pecans
its really important
i only speak XPA
This conversation is nuts
Yeah, but the pronounciation. Using English to explain pronounciation is like using Brainf*ck to explain coding.
LOL
ピーカン
98% of people don't know IPA pronunication, or that its even a thing, I bet
So it's more like using assembly (for IPA) rather than C (for English) 😛
I honestly rather use Assembly than C, and I'm a high-level coder.
Yeah english is inconsistent, but some things are fairly consistent, like ee. Which means the other option can be figured out through context usually
dare i say it's closer to CIL -> C#
You may dare
But may blueberry double dare?
Cool
Or possibly even the mythical double dog dare?
Also, I just looked it up, and today I found out that pecans exist. Never heard of them.
tomato?
Do u grow tomato
Cool
this is the ideal opportunity to run an experiment to see how someone will naturally pronounce 'pecan' having never been exposed to the word before
Is it new clear or nu cue laurrrr
i barely grow anything in my apartment, not enough sun. only north-southf acing windows
Who timed me out lol
zoe.....
I'm blaming zoe
Dynamic slow mode 😛
It's been like that for ages
More people talking = more slow mode
Honestly, I tried pronouncing them peceau (French) and that feels surprisingly right.
Hai I am a big bueautiful buttu-fwy in da wooods
Great
context makes it easy to understand
How is this ban worthy?
Might have been nu cue laurrrrr
Are you a puh-kahn-er too
Didn't use the IPO phonetic alphabet way or w/e
Wording it that way makes it sound more exaggerated, but it's closer to that than other options presented here, yes
😌
Such blinding white...
banned banned banned. you are ALL banned. NONE of you get pecans
Am I allowed to pronounce it like peckin?
American pronunciation
dismissed
pea can, naturally
I'm not making piss can pie
New quote added by bblueberry as #7226 (https://discordapp.com/channels/137344473976799233/1215712021207720006/1468447070842261720)
But pecans are so much more interesting
The cold version
....name me every type of pecan
I want to see figure skating
That's what makes them interesting! Always more to discover!
i wish ipa was more common. merrily learning pointless mandarin words from friends and somehow water chestnut translates to snot when i say it
(I do not like pecans, or any nut)
I will never try to learn a tonal language
Zoe what do u grow
(Is mandarin tonal? I do not know)
nutless.
Yeah, mandarin is tonal
Flowers, obviously, it's in their username!
(@simple dawn please don't say random words to level up, you need to talk in a conversation normally to get to level 5 for VC perms
)
I was about to say "Better than maidenless", but that's also the case
How are u maidenless when u are a maiden
Because I don't count 😛
I could be super self deprecating here but atra will smite me if I do so
not in a bad way, in a "I'm stuck with myself" sort of way
I'm currently trying to grow a pineapple guava tree but it's constantly trying to die on me
Cuteeee treee
Our weather is too wild
I've had lots of veggie gardens before but I move a lot unfortunately
this summer's been ridiculous. 45 one day, 20 the next, 25 overnight, a week straight of rain, a month without
.wolfram 45 C in F
113 °F (degrees Fahrenheit)
Approximately one oven
...that's a lot, do you mean C?
it's a lot
.wolfram 20 C in F
yeah that's c haha
68 °F (degrees Fahrenheit)
Australia is on fire.
I hear there is also a very dead zone in the ocean
Last week one of my brothers said he got snow in his part of town. Today it was 70 F
.wolfram 70 F in C
21.11 °C (degrees Celsius)
Our weather is playing basketball with the temperature
Also your central bank increased rates by 25 bps
Christ almighty
.wolfram 50 C in F
Bring out the frying pan
122 °F (degrees Fahrenheit)
yep
Let's try to fry an egg on your car
Is AC common there, or is suffering common instead?
i was leaving some bowls of water out for the birds at the time, they were doing a good impression of hainan chicken
I'm up the top of Aus so we've been slammed by insane, flooding rain on top of the horrible heat and no AC
and then the bottom of Aus is insanely dry and has been completely on fire
Blueberry is ACless
no AC here, it's pervasive in the city but overall uncommon
A lot of city homes would have AC, but not much elsewhere
Huh, interesting
It's too expensive for most people anyways
I can recommend using a sauna. That might sound counterproductive, but afterwards everything will suddenly feel cool.
Because electricity is expensive?
I have quite insane heat tolerance but
And has to be generated with gas or something?
points at sun
I was reading somewhere that the Aussie grid is rather fragmented
i was honestly considering buying a hotel room the last time it was 45C
Yeah but you gotta get all the stuff out into the desert
if it wasn't 20 overnight i would've
Go generate your own with solar panels smuggled from China like a real person
Probably by now solar is worth it but even here it’s like $20k from what I’ve read
Have you considered pointing the fans south so that the rain clouds head there?
I've done that before blueberry
it's honestly a good idea haha
So worth it is not important if getting the capital is hard
Save $10k by doing it yourself!
But what if I touch the electrics wrong
a measly $150 to survive a day and a night in blissful air conditioning. breakfast provided...
Honestly I have contemplated the concept of DIY solar but I think I’m too into things like “fridges that run on AC” and “being able to resell the house ever”
AC being alternating here
luckily i've long given up on the idea of "being able to buy a house ever"
I ran totally off-grid on solar for a few years but the number of issues we experienced were insane
maybe melbourne is affordable
but that was also whilst living in a tent
That's what inverters are for!
so no ac either
Surely inverters hamper efficiency? Maybe I’m overestimating?
...for a few years?
Just get more panels tbh
just housing crisis things ✨
just invert the inefficiency back to efficiency. its that easy
Our UV index is like…0 to 1 this time of year
so we've been at 11 for the last 3 months
At least its 0 indexed
Get out of here, you filthy one-indexed programming languages
I guess Australia is the perfect place for solar then
pretty much haha
not exactly surprising given we're the skin cancer capital of the world by a long way
I have heard that you all are very serious about sunscreen
Mostly while reading about how pathetic the US sunscreens are
A little but I want a fridge and at least minisplits
i think the figures are almost 1 in 2 people will get some form of skin cancer in their life
i'm not surprised, my last derma visit was like $300 to say 'no problem mate'
not even bulk billed smh
tho my one amusing story is that the doctor did remark that i was the only person the whole day who walked in with a hat in the middle of summer
so again the figures aren't surprising lol
the people don't respect slip slop slap + no hat no play
I did a skin cancer placement for uni and our entire group of medical professionals got absolutely murdered for not wearing a hat or sunscreen throughout that time
these people were fully aware of the risks but were too lazy to care
they got banished from doing anything until they complied 💔
no hat no medical license 🙂↕️
all zachtronics games are 50% off again rn!
oh no
it doesn't scare me, because i already have all of them
Thanks for the heads-up.
this is very irresponsible behavior for a prospective junimo, I'm afraid I'm going to have to report this
Because they are promoting our unproductivity?
they're promoting crack cocaine
Ah
I think they're promoting you buying the game legitimately though, not through a crack
The games look good.
I do get paid tomorrow....
this doesnt scare me because openttd is free
help i'm building trains and bus networks again
It doesn’t scare me much because I’ll forget by this evening anyways
damn sounds like I need to post 20 opus magnum gifs this evening
Get them to pay u for marketing
I have a stupid questions
What does doja cat have to do with this gif
Umm... Doja Cat is life. Star Wars is life. Therefore, Doja Cat is Star Wars. I'm sure each of those statements is independently true to some.
If you say so, but I'd rather paint the town red
(Those are the only two doja cat songs I know)
It makes you ask questions.
It worked, didn't it?
(stole that from my parents 😛 )
I hate being sick
does anyone have a json or something of all growable items, their names, purchase amounts, grow times, what they are etc?
Ill take almost anything related to it.
!unpack for stardew
Follow this guide to unpack the game's content files in order to see and explore how the game data is structured.
It's helpful when making your own mods, or just to learn about how the game works!
I'm addicted to this game.
I feel like this is the smallest area possible.
I know that it's only the first level, but I already spent so much time trying to optimize it for all categories.
Oh, wait, just as small and cheaper.
now you have to add us all on steam for leaderboards
def smallest area since you have no area used other than the bare minimum required components!
for the first few levels, area and cost can be brought down to the literal minimum (sometimes at the same time, sometimes not)
I only have one Steam friend who played this game and they always took the most obvious solution so I need new friends for leaderboard comparison Nevermind, you suggested it before I had to ask.
Is that not possible later? Very interesting. Now I'm curious.
I'm not sure? there are times where I doubt it would be
I mean strictly speaking there's always a true minimum
but yeah there will be ones where you probably have to use some space that doesn't have anything on it
well yeah, but I meant the literal "one arm plus the product and one of each component" minimum
oh yeah that's definitely impossible
Awww.
you'll crush my area scores cause I paid no attention to it
molek syntez isn't quite as fun so far as opus magnum, at least for me :(
but very similar principle
my steam is linked in my profile feel free to add
What's molek
I read that as "feel free to feel old"
I want to crush everyone's scores in all categories.
lmao
also allowed
This game is the most fun I had in weeks.
it's a great game, yeah
once you beat the entire main campaign you'll be able to turn on top percentile view and see what the top 1% of players got
Arms
legs
claws
this is a molek syntez btw atra to answer your question
this is not quite how I remember organic chemistry
Is that nitrogen normal
Was this separate from opus magnum?
mescaline, apparently
but there's a benzene in the middle to start with
I don't like optimizing for cycles...
3,4,5-trimethoxyphenethylamine
lol... I pulled out PIKAL to look that up only to realize it's what iro had just said.
yeah, the chemicals in this game are real (which may be why the puzzles aren’t quite as fun as they could be imo)
yeah, the stuff in this game is real (which may be why it isn't quite as fun as it could be imo)
- irocendar
(I concur with that statement)
I just mean they could have had more challenging puzzles if they crafted them by hand
Clearly, they should have made an extradimensional DLC, with stuff from opus magnum crossing over and interacting in weird ways
unfortunately the atoms in opus magnum aren’t usually the type that bind to hydrogen /lh
That's where the shenanigans happen, obviously
I feel like I should want to play these games, but...
idunno, maybe that sort of resource optimization puzzle solving is too close to some of the things I have to deal with for actual work.
Or maybe my brain is just losing plasticity in my old age.
I usually also hate resource optimisation and loved these, if it helps? but also if it doesn’t seem fun it doesn’t seem fun haha
yeah, but it's hard to judge whether I'm giving it a fair shake on "seems fun" based just on the gifs posted here.
I found them to be pretty accurate to the general vibe of the game when I first played it, but it’s also very individual I imagine
i definitely feel that way sometimes about engineering puzzle games
I love resource optimization!
it's not particularly consistent feeling though i think
What about urban transport
if it helps, the game is not very expensive (and currently 50% off)? but also if I was writing assembly for a job idk if I would have liked tis100 haha
like factorio-esque i don't hate but i can't stay interested for long
things where you make assembly line belts
urban transport rates very highly in my book
train games are good games
What if we make a game centered around the Kreb cycle
eh
You're a cell nucleus
you would be putting all med students through trauma
Up and down regulate your proteins to not die
anything with time pressure i don't like
Krebs cycle is a favorite
mini metro without the pause button would be a way worse game for me
See, I look at Shenzhen I/O and I'm like "why don't I just lay out a pcb irl"
i like the tile placement games a lot, i have discovered
What's mini metro
is factorio even resource optimization?
most of what I've seen about it is "increase throughput"
mini metro is a game where you plan subway lines to serve simulated populations
across vaguely real cities
There was this web game I used to like
You were a virus
Trying to infect the world
idk maybe resource optimization isn't exactly right for factorio but it's definitely an archetype that really seems like it ought to appeal to me
i teach a class that covers assembly line optimization!
but no, too much like work
Little Rocket Lab has such a low cap on how fast you can get throughput, and so it very quickly becomes "how small can you make the machine that still hits max throughput"
(they actually added a “save the world” mode for covid where you were FIGHTING infection, which helped educate people and also they donated a bunch of money)
puzzle games in general i tend to find frustrating unless there's an element of building stuff involved
which is annoying because i start to play them, get very frustrated, and have to cut myself off
Tbh I'm gonna admit I mostly just play sudoku
Does shenzhen I/O have the concept of impedance matched traces
without having played it I’m gonna go ahead and guess no
But yeah, opus mangus looks fun to me
Shenzhen i/o looks like "hey atra just go lay out a pcb for reals"
Change of topic
i also really prefer video games that are "cute" or "pretty"
Any interesting exercise games?
like dodgball in PE or?
Video game exercise game like wii fit
oh, i never play any of those because they pretty much all require sensors and stuff
I hear Just Dance is interesting
I feel like I would like ddr
I hear vr is popular for exercise
I'm stupidly obsessed with fitness Marshall videos haha
What about tire pressure:P
what if its in the style of Cells at Work
idk if that's cute
All the platelets look like children, I don't think it's an age thing
To be fair it's not an entirely cute/wholesome anime. Mainly stuff with the immune system
Like the white blood cells
One of the few gifs of them that didn't seem to involve lots of blood (from the germs - don't ask how that works, I don't know)
i feel like white blood cells do a bit less sprinting and a bit more inexorable squelching
That specific red blood cell and white blood cell are recurring characters
I feel like they also don't have houses and trolleys and stuff (the cells in general, that is)
It's been ages since I watched that, I should check it out again some time
Is this an anime about blood
The body/health in general
Adorable
Like it visualizes what happens when you get a cut, a transfusion, etc.
It's osmosis jones but cute anime girls and episodic (I have not watched it)
What's osmosis jones
It's like Cells at Work
"Cells Unemployed"
Oh that's adorable!!!!!
...there's a season 2??? Definitely need to watch
Influenza
My cells feel pretty unemployed right now since I've been sick for a few days now. I want a refund on my white blood cells
You too?
I was just watching that
(I have a cold too. Given I'm racing 15km on Saturday....)
He's teaching me about putting energy on the grid
welcome to linux problems, I am your host. Today, after an update, kde plasma completely stops refreshing the screen after logging in. It doesn't freeze, turns out, and you can get it to refresh by using the keyboard commands to switch from tty2 to tty3 and back, and then it'll update the single frame. I have no idea what is causing this
Hi, this sort of thing also sort of happens to me randomly with KDE.
I have no idea why.
That was my talk.
i've seen it happen before, but usually a reboot causes it to figure itself out, now I cant get it to move past it
That's a whole different level of thing though, yeah...
I suppose you've tried X11/Wayland depending on which you normally use?
I dont even have X11 set up anymore
i suppose you've tried W11/Windows depending on which you normally use?
Yeah, you have to do... something I don't remember to force KDE to re-enable X11 now anyway.
I hate how much that joke works with Windows 11, and I love it.
daily win11 gripe: the taskbar randomly has lower priority on the desktop than other windows when set to auto-hide and i will never know why
hi aquo, first time caller long time listener.
the problem i have is with niri and xwayland-satellite. it works totally fine except this infuriating quirk: after putting the computer into s3 suspend and waking it up, the discord app specifically gets some kind of cursed maximum refresh rate on which mouse cursor image is displayed. it drops down to like one refresh every 1.5 seconds (the position/responsiveness is fine, it's just deciding which png to display). the only way out is to kill xwayland-satellite and let niri restart it, and it's fine again.
no other programs do this! restarting discord doesn't work, either, i have to kill xwayland. what is even going on in there
I never suspend my Linux PC; bad things happen when I do (I don't remember what I just know in my bones, like some sort of ancestral knowledge)
I wish I could file taxes with free tax usa
(I now do the bullheaded thing of filing by hand.)
im using free tax usa for the first time this year
this is basically the only weird side effect i've ever had over decades of using S3 suspend! it is frustrating
(yes, i have previously used cursed kernel-oriented tools to rewrite a computer's DSDT to enable the s3 suspend that it was capable of but which was disabled at the factory by the windows people who want me to use "modern standby" si0x or whatever it is)
I don't think i ever setup suspend correctly so when i press hibernate it actually just shuts down
well, I can install xfce, and it's X11 compositor version runs fine, the wayland one crashes immediately, which I don't think tells me anything. I've cleared out some of my plasma files, deleted all the AUR plugins for it, but I think I need to just completely clean out its settings. Otherwise... uhhh
creating a new user also doesn't help, I guess plasma is just kinda fucked at the moment, idk
🌈
you know which wayland WM doesnt have problems? hy-ok I lied it also has like 100 little annoyances
Aquova let me know when it'll be safe to updoot thx
i do have an old hyprland config lying around, but I frankly would rather use xfce lol
I feel like all of my problems have fallen in the goes away in a couple updates bucket
I dont even think there was a big plasma update recently, idk what changed
and of course, everything is working fine on my desktop
No it means u r skilled
I've never used suspend
wait no I have on my laptop cause it does if I close the lid
no issues tho
alright pitch which DE i should use for a week while I wait for whatever plasma issue is to resolve itself
oh shit does someone have the same issue as me on reddit this morning
making me log into reddit for the first time in like a year, how dare they
as much as I loathe it if you want something that just works™ in the meantime there's ||GNOME||
gnome only just works if you never use its file picker (a crime against humanity)
oh my god is it a powerdevil thing
i'm exaggerating of course but that file picker is the devil's work
cosmic
i can have new exciting errors instead
save power by disabling screen refreshing
ayyyy I think their solution worked
too bad I deleted most of my plasma configs in the process... alas
You need some dotfile management in your life
I moved them into a new folder and them put them back
but I also uninstalled some plugins in the process and tried manually deleting the panels, so I have to recreate them
you've never tried to manage KDE plasma dotfiles I see
If i can open a terminal I'm happy
I give up on molek-syntez
are you familiar with ctrl+alt+f1-f6 for changing to a different tty
For those who didn't see, Valve confirmed the memory/storage shortages have impacted the timing and price of the release. (Aiming for first half of this year though)
ah it's mrbeast this time not elon
First time it's stayed up long enough for me to see it
I normally ping
(don't worry I reported it like a good noodle)
yeah saw that too
some people speculate valve may make even or even sell it for a loss
@dusty pollen this is your chance
(probably unlikely but still)
chance to prove yourself as an apple
protect us from 2700 usd in our wallet
While I can technically delete it, I don't know if I'm actually allowed to.
And also it's on like 8 other channels
i can feel my money slipping away
(The user has been around for like a year, so I assume it's a hacked account)
yeah this one usually seems to be hacked accounts
the same thing got deleted in making-mods a minute ago, so you're probably good to kill it
<@&239770080378880001> save us obi-wan
Ooh, well this one changed the formula a bit.
yeah it's mrbeast not elon
What I mean is that the @ stardew developer role may technically have the role perms, I don't know if I'm supposed to 😛
exciting
Let me immortalize proof of my good-noodle-ness
only if he earns more from it than he lost
Noooo the one time I'm actually in the server but I was reading the previous messages :(
you missed out on 2700 usd
missing out on incoherent photos of somebody's phone screen
also a computer screen
(it originally took me like 4 scam posts to figure out how it was even supposed to work)
I've never actually paid enough attention to what I would have to do
on twitter it'd have like a fake @ or website url somewhere, iirc
i haven't zoomed on the more recent discord stuff
i’m thinking of getting godot and trying python after only doing scratch code and json for a long time
i am in a game design class but it doesn’t teach me how to code, just how to make a game that doesn’t suck
I'd say those are somewhat orthogonal
if you need a gentler next step pygame is pretty good for a simple python game engine
ohh i’ve heard of pygame
my fathers a programmer who works in ruby and c++ mostly
godot is a whole ass engine and I dont believe it has first class python support
it doesn’t?
To be fair, GDscript is very similar to Python.
Is Python only a second class citizen?
there's also ren'py for visual novels
though most of those probably shouldn't be using raw python, they technically can
i looked at that but they’ved shoved a bunch of ai into it so ehhhh
GDscript is the language for Godot.
or wait might be another thing
!! IM STUPID !!
there was another language i was looking at but it was like. 90% ai 🥀
IT WAS GDEVELOP not gdscript ✌️
GDScript was similar to C# I thought
Must've been mistaken
I'm probably thinking of the fact that godot supports C# by extensibility, then
Godot also supports C# though
I'm torn between saying "gladly" and "never"
Glever.
Glever
The hit N64 game, Glover?????
maybe i’ll look at pygame but i was told it’s more of a framework
Pygame provides a lot less out of the box, but is still feasible
Same sort of thing as Monogame (what stardew uses)
GDScript and Godot would be a fine choice for starting from essentially scratch, though.

don’t do what i did and confuse it 🤦♀️
(Obligatory fist shake at Unity)
If you have the motivation and interest for it, figuring out how to do it in a framework is great for knowing how things work underneath.
But motivation and interest is often the main part, and I get that making actual gameplay is much better for that. It's a big reason why I gravitate towards modding
my father has done C++, ruby and python and my mom has done html but isnt html just a formatting language
i did a little bit of html just to format my toyhouse page 💀
(Fun fact this got a PC port: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1257880/Glover/ )
Save the World...Single-handed!
The Kingdom's peaceful world has been shattered! The wizard, while mixing potions with his magical gloves has caused a huge explosion, turning him instantly to stone and dislodging the seven crystals that give the Kingdom its energy. Without the crystals, the castle and its world will fall apart and the wiza…

Title result: Glover on Steam
woaw
(I had no clue what I was doing with how young I was when I played it, so never made it far)
it’s kind of embarrassing how long i’ve used scratch, but it has so much of an easier vector editor to use than adobe
i DESPISE adobe
Apparently it's a rather poor port
i’ve always been on the art side of my “coding” anyway, as soon as an operator or function got involved in scratch i ran away
Well, some people say its a good port since theres no huge gameplay stopping bugs, but apparently there are some long standing bugs with audio and missing textures and such
(Are we stopping at only a fist shake today?)
has never actually used Unity
missing textures
they're just faithfully recreating the n64 experience /j
I just (try to) run away at the first sight of Scratch in general.
Have you witnessed Scratch Minecraft yet
if you ignore all the children you can get some impressive things done
i think i will try game

Gameplay Con...
It's surprisingly capable
A pig just jumped into lava and killed itself. Truly accurate to vanilla minecraft
(Controls are a bit odd, like using space instead of right click in inventories)
Oh, it's plenty capable for sure... using it just makes me want to implode a little.
Scratch or scratch MC? 😛
Yes.
New quote added by atravita as #7239 (https://discordapp.com/channels/137344473976799233/1215712021207720006/1469019088427941968)
I've never used scratch
This gave me some nostalgia for old MC I didn't know I still had, so played it for a bit.
Was about to enchant tools but decided to sleep (first time), and it crashed. So much for that 😛
(Well, it froze and never recovered)
Me neither
(I was also going to see if the nether was accessible, and had everything for it. But apparently, sleep kills)
I've never played Minecraft
skill issue
Atra could play Minecraft. It's not on Steam, and so isn't bound by the "no opening steam until casey finishes stardew3D" rule
I even have Minecraft off Google play!
wanna share that I spent a couple hours yesterday researching OpenTTD modding solely so I can fix a bug in a mod I'm playing with
I sent a PR but it seems like the author's been quiet for 6 months
Open source reimplementation of transportation simulator or something
it's an open source remake of Transport Tycoon Deluxe
you build trains and buses and stuff
@sand frost u may like
openrct2 (roller coaster tycoon 2) also a fun time if you are into that sort of thing
U know u have bad day when u have to consult spec on scoping rules
What is the licensing shenanigans behind these Open* ports
I think i tried to setup openrct2 once and never figured out where i was supposed to get the assets from
iirc you have to install the actual original game & then point the port at it
similar to emulators that ask you to extract (i.e. google) bios files to make it run, so they don't get taken down for distributing them
openrct2 itself is apparently gpl though
I only own rollercoaster tycoon 1
I dont kwn open randomized control trial 2
they've cleanroomed or at least rewritten the entirety of the game engine, but you have to get the assets from the original game files
....God fucking hell
{
$display(var1, var2,var3);
}
Compiles
{
var2 = var1;
$display(var1,var2,var3);
}
``` does not compile
Because "var2 was declared twice in two scopes "
Enforcing `default_nettype none doesn't change the error message
no shadowing allowed
What in the second statement is a declaration????
do I look like I know how verilog does variable declarations
wasn't sure what language it was, so I just figured it's like javascript's vibes-based declaration
though combining that with that error is a nightmare
javascript loves scoping rules
just use var and it doesn't have any
well no ok it still has some scope unlike python shit
ig it has a let keyword, I never once used it
I don't know the difference between let and var but I know let causes me less problems so I use that for everything
let is the better var
cause it has normal scoping rules instead of being globally scoped (or function scoped)
there really is no reason to ever use var unless you intentionally want to avoid scoping rules in which case... wtf are you doing
What if I just hate the idea of using the word let for variable declaration
cause rust does it?
Nah, my dislike of let predates rust
damn
tbh I sometimes use var in javascript just cause I write C# at the same time often enough
and then just end up typing var somewhere in js
I wonder if let is newer, or if my university professors just didn't care to mention it
haven't used JS except for some classes there and my spaghetti json editor
I think the college I went to only just started teaching some C++11 stuff a few years ago
or you're in visual studio and have to deal with its 3000 years out of date js and css tooling which will warn you that let is new and not supported by all browser (it has been supported by every single browser for 9 years)
I did graduate before that, being old™
mdn* only confirms that var existed a year before that, though, so idk when what got standardized
let was brand new when I did web programming in uni I think
God that's let?
Verilog....has a lot of fun with accidentally declaring wires because you didnt notice u typoed smth
maybe? sounds like your error was weird declaration-without-keyword logic
(OpenTTD has its own assets now so you don't even need those)
(the ship of Theseus is fully replaced)
I think var has been a thing forever? Like it was part of the original javascript
opera has supported var since 1997 for example
probably, yeah, just hard to dig up confirmation
now somebody do it for Kirby Air Ride
pretty sure these supported dates in mdn are just the release dates of the browsers
This is why a lot of my more recent webdev stuff is littered with random vars at times and making me look like a bad javascript dev
shared struggles
Nintendo will kill you
them killing whoever would is not disputed however
Of course not
The only thing more ubiquitous than Nintendo's lawyers is Nintendo's ninja assassins
original racing game, do not steal
square kirby model
dang
Gotta go triangles
there're probably a lot of kirby shapes to avoid if we count the games where he eats cars or w/e
Technically he didn't eat the car, he just drove it while holding the entire thing with his mouth
The whole point of mouthful mode is that he doesn't actually eat them
He puppets them
ah, I only caught like 10 minutes of that game being streamed
kirby probably hasnt turned into a 4-sphere yet
We will just substitute Casey's cat
I refuse to learn enough about physics stuff to get an actually good feeling system for a KAR-like
I can trivially be nerdsniped into physics
But I am, like, emotionally not capable of making a video game
The internet told me
physics engines are best built by some random opensource project run by some unknown guy in uni who did it for fun next to their degree
(Happy birthday Crumb!)
(thanks)
Happy birthday crumble
Happy birthday!
I'm not allowed to use +=? Kill me now
have to do x = x + y like a troglodyte
Or like some needing to edit something on a property in C# (ex. kitty.Position.X += 3;)
I've been back in C# land lately at work
even have had to touch a lil bit of reflection
some custom attributes
it's been nice
This just shows how ancient monogame is tbh
Ref properties are love
I don't think ref properties are used very often...
They're so good!
Happy birthday
Quite recently
Okay then that hardly is from monogame being "ancient" 😛
For all I know, newer MG has it
Here's a reference in 2020 to it
do people prefer vscode or notepad++, i’m using vscode
those are certainly two options
I suppose I use Visual Studio, VS Code, Notepad++ and Helix
primarily helix and visual studio
vs code only really for the oracle database extension
I prefer VSCode, but that's because I use it for a lot of things that it seems to do a good job of such as handling remote SSH connections and managing Docker containers to name two
i see
CAT.
I think the last time I actually used notepad++ was for its "show hidden symbol" feature, but since then I've mostly worked out how to have vscode do the same
notepad++ is my session storage for random bits of text
I use regular notepad for that
I use sublime for that
I use xxd for that
I use discord for that
that's state sponsored notepad++ to you
one-time pad++, the #1 tool for sharing state secrets
Loaf
alas I was busy staring into the void
an important activity
A new page with an old game prototype got added to my old website. Or so I hear.
(For those who aren't gonna bother looking for it (ie. everyone) even though there's a hint on the front page: https://spacechase0.com/games/unfinished/pet-kar/)
It even has non-windows builds!
I think they quit the game
no more ochem
that game was meh, I moved on to the next zachtronic
Smh and u didnt just show me a gif of a spinning hexafluorocubane?
how could I if I don't even know what that is
ngl none of their visual programming games reached the peak that was opus magnum
iirc zach even admitted it as such in the interview
I played a bit of last call bbs today
what are your other favourite zachtronics, selph?
SpaceChem was the first I tried, and I liked it, but fair warning that it's definitely very difficult
I also liked Shenzhen I/O but you also tried that
I have not, no
I did a bit of that one, wasn't too big on it
(the rest of their catalogue doesn't quite catch my eye admittedly)
I think the only real programming game I've played recently that I actually put hours in was https://store.steampowered.com/app/2060160/The_Farmer_Was_Replaced/
yesterday i learned my husband has that one
yall keep talking about zachtronics games so i went and looked at some
he says SpaceChem was fun but it looks like magnum opus but less pretty
he also has TIS-100 which is one of the most in character things ever
(he likes to program calculators)
Iro liked that one
i think i might need to learn assembly or something
or maybe it would teachme assembly?
It's on my list for games to pick up
When I fully funded this year roth ira
And when @devout vault let's me back in my steam account
tis-100 is excellent
Casey i expect to fund the roth ira in 10 weeks, maybe less
It's possible I'll have a "technically playable but everything is billboard sprites" build by then
why does casey have your account
