Landlords are evil

I guess I can justify it since my apartment came fully furnished and with all the kitchen equipment I needed sans an airfryer

Oh my god

Not even my shared student apartment rent was that low

I would kill for that

devout vault

My rent before my chicago stint was like 1.4k a month

And I live in a fucking village compared to Gouda

safe dragon

rent in Gouda is over 1k a month

The lowest I ever had was 600 (also in college, like Quill)

Nah, a lot of landlords require tenants to have a certain income here

He's afraid of everything that moves and doesn't smell like me or my mother. Or, when we cary something weird he's also afraid of us.

safe dragon
#

alright for completeness for atra
I paid 1,491.69 in municipal and water management taxes. That's 124.31 euros a month. If we add that to the 715 euros from before that's 839 euros a month

#

some of that you'd also pay when you rent

cinder karma
#

What's fucking hilarious is that is I'm looking at a minimum mortgage payment of ~ $833 and > $500 of property tax alone

#

Add in insurance and it's more than the mortgage

safe dragon
#

I don't think we have a direct comparison for property taxes. I pay a bunch of taxes that scale based on the property I own and the size of it

#

but there's nothing strictly called property taxes

#

it's divided into stuff like sewage treatment, waste facility upkeep, water system maintenance

devout vault
#

Oh that's separate here

#

Property tax is a bonus fee

cinder karma
#

To be fair. Casey

safe dragon
#

I also pay 1.50 euros per trash bag I guess I accidentally included that in that monthly figure

cinder karma
#

Neither of us pay state income tax

#

This is why I can target a mortgage payoff of less than 5 years

#

Leaving taxes as my only housing costs

safe dragon
#

paying off an entire house in 5 years seems insane

#

I don't think they even allow you to sign up for a mortgage like that here

#

15 years is the minimum I think

devout vault
#

We've been here close to 20 years and I don't think my parents have paid off the house yet

safe dragon
#

30 is pretty standard

#

if you want to lose less to interest payments you can go for a shorter timeframe

#

but obviously higher monthly cost

crystal wren
#

I'll take lower interest and lower monthly cost, thanks.

safe dragon
#

I'm afraid we don't have that option

cinder karma
#

So the specific thing I'm going for is the 7/6 ARM, then just blitz it

crystal wren
#

Sounds... risc-y...

safe dragon
#

we used to here called an interest-only mortgage. There you never actually pay off your mortgage, you only pay the interest for the mortgage and assume that your house will increase in value to pay back the actual mortgage value then

#

that turned out to be a bad idea so that's gone now

devout vault
#

Mods, promote him?

worn remnant
# safe dragon 15 years is the minimum I think

i think this is true in the US too (or at least no one offers such a short loan that i know of), but you can also just choose to overpay and the excess gets deducted from principal, so you can pay it off faster that way

crystal wren
safe dragon
devout vault
safe dragon
#

unless you have a really low interest loan compared to the current interest rates

cinder karma
safe dragon
#

I got my mortgage during a historic low in interest rates so they allow me to pay off as much as I want

cinder karma
#

I am less lucky lol

safe dragon
#

I did go over the maximum in extra repayment for my mortgage this year

#

finances

#

for the most part I just kinda zone out and pay the stuff I'm owed

devout vault
#

Maximum... extra.. repayment?

safe dragon
#

yeah

devout vault
#

Did they say "no, actually, we don't want more of your money"

#

(because we'll make less in the long term, I assume)

safe dragon
#

they're counting on your loan existing for a longer timeframe so if you suddenly pay it off all at once that's a problem to them so they cap the amount you're allowed to repay

#

you'd also end up paying them a lot less in interest

cinder karma
#

Yeah, it's that

safe dragon
#

🌈

#

I couldn't pay off my full mortgage if I wanted to don't worry bank

devout vault
#

Yeah that's what I figured

#

It's still funny on a surface level though

#

Like if counting on a longer timeframe, then just throw it in business savings and pay yourself monthly, smh

#

(not that that helps with the interest part, since I doubt anyone's interest is less than a savings account would be)

cinder karma
#

The mortgage interest is typically higher than the matching interest rate for corporate bonds

safe dragon
#

my mortgage interest is 1.37%, to make people jealous

cinder karma

So fun

terse galleon
#

computer science people: i'm running a fandom event where i match up pairs of artists and authors together based on two factors: authors' ranked choice, and all participants' desired level of collaboration on a scale of 1-5. in the past i've just done this matching manually, but do you know of any sorting algorithm or anything that would speed up the process? the desire is to have everyone with a match, and to prefer 2 people get their second choice over one person getting their first choice and one person getting their third choice

#

like i said i can just do it manually but it occurred to me that there may be a program or something out there already

rain apex
#

Hm this is gonna sound stupid but you want a tournament bracket tool of some kind then

cinder karma
#

Stable matching problem - Wikipedia https://share.google/AdHbWVCpA3mJ46UMf ?

In mathematics, economics, and computer science, the stable matching problem is the problem of finding a stable matching between two equally sized sets of elements given an ordering of preferences for each element. A matching is a bijection from the elements of one set to the elements of the other set. A matching is not stable if:

In other w...

#

Stable marriage?

terse galleon
#

hmm it looks like stable marriage might require the other set to have ranked their preferences? i might be able to explain this better if i show the data

#

left: authors ranked a minimum of 5 artworks they wanted to claim, up to 10. they only receive one match.
right: an example of what they were shown for claims purposes (the artwork, the artists' desired collab level, etc)

#

so ideally the author would have already taken the artists' preferences into account, but in case they ignored that, i double check to see i'm not matching a level 1 with a level 5 desired collaboration level. as you can see some artworks are way more popular and some have 1 or fewer claims

#

so even if an artwork is an author's seventh choice, if that's the only time it's claimed, i need to give it to them in order to ensure the artwork gets matched. but ideally every author would get their first choice

#

does that make it clearer?

cinder karma
#

What is the desired collaboration level going for

#

Are there equal numbers of artist and author

terse galleon
#

the point of that is to make sure i don't match a chatterbox who wants to give and receive a ton of feedback with someone who just wants to be left alone to work. it's not AS important, but still a factor in making sure communication doesn't break down.

yes, equal numbers, but with the caveat that some people will drop out. but i have pinch hitters in place whose purpose is to fill in when needed

cinder karma
#

Does it have to be an exact match

terse galleon
#

by exact match do you mean everyone gets exactly one partner?

cinder karma
#

Sorry. The collaboration, will you pair a 4 with a 5 or not

terse galleon
#

oh yeah definitely will do that

#

i try not to have it be a difference of more than +/- 2 (for example, a 3 and a 5)

#

but sometimes needs must

frosty echo
#

Maybe just assign randomly, discard if anything obviously no good is chosen, measure the goodness of the rest, repeat however many times keeping the best each time?

terse galleon
#

that sounds like what i basically do manually lol :D if there's something that could speed it up that'd be grand

#

preliminary matches just based on first come first serve, then re-evaluate as needed

frosty echo
cinder karma
#

Yeah, and just have the weights increase above linear as you go down the author desire list

terse galleon
#

hmm interesting interesting

cinder karma
#

Tbh you cant possibly have that many people you could literally do every possible combination

terse galleon
#

yeah like i said only 24 artworks

#

lmao speak of the devil i just had someone contact me they're dropping out

red crest
#

isnt this just the assignment problem rather than the stable matching problem

terse galleon
#

reading the wikipedia page examples, it does sound like it

#

with the added secondary variable of desired collaboration level (which i'd weight at maybe 30/70)

red crest
#

if you know how much the choice and the collaboration desire should contribute then you can just combine them into one value and do the algo against their combined score

terse galleon
#

on a practical level, do you know of an existing tool that can do that? or do you mean theoretically, if i were to code something (which i doubt my ability to do lol)

red crest
#

theoretically, if you were to code something

#

there probably is an assignment problem calculator out there somewhere

#

but i dont know of one

i see i see

that kind of complicates things I guess SDVpufferthinkblob

terse galleon
#

so far, with 8 people who haven't submitted their claims yet, there's only one artwork that doesn't appear in any claims

dusty pollen
#

you could make the reverse of the rank list for a certain artwork by ranking the authors who chose it based on what they ranked it, with equal rankings being higher if the author has fewer total choices and lower otherwise

#

so if Artwork A is Author 1's first choice, author 2's third choice out of five and author 3's 3rd choice out of ten, its reverse ranking would be 1: Author 1, 2: Author 2, 3: Author 3

terse galleon
#

ooh interesting

dusty pollen
#

should be relatively easy to generate that

terse galleon
#

then comparing that to the other results, or using that in the stable marriage one, or?

dusty pollen
#

stable marriage would be my first attempt

#

idk if stable marriage can handle empty rank lists, if it can’t you can just add a dummy author for every artwork that hasn’t been selected

cinder karma
#

Can't you just exclude all artworks with no authors

terse galleon
#

yeah i had put dummies in for pinch hitters for the people that dropped out, with all fics at 999 instead of 1-10. that calculator also let me put in - to prevent matching authors with art they didn't list in their claim

Code is fun when it is 50% boilerplate and 50% preprocessor macro

devout vault

C# doesn't have macros 😔

uncut seal
#

I love C++ and I'm not even at a level good enough to use macro

#

it's saying how good C++ is

devout vault
#

I mean, the basics of macros aren't that advanced

#

I'm pretty I've even done just stuff like #define f(x) (f2(x) + f3(x, 5))

uncut seal
#

I mean, I have not got into a situation where it was the obvious solution (I'm not used to using them + I don't code enough C++)

It's terminal

#

Too late

#

Makefiles are everything

worn remnant
#

see this, everyone? turn back now, lest you all suffer as we have

crystal wren

I would genuinely rather write a makefile than use CMake for a lot of cases I think, yeah.

devout vault
devout vault
cinder karma
#

I have python scripts parsing makefiles now

crystal wren
devout vault
cinder karma
#

I'm gonna be like the opposite...I actually hate macros lol

#

Every time I'm like I miss rust 🙁

uncut seal
#

the only issue I have with makefiles is that when I learned C++, whatever tutorial I was following dumped a makefile with no explanation, so I didn't even fully understand what a gcc build command was for a while

worn remnant
uncut seal
#

but now I like makefiles, even if I don't know/remember how to make them

cinder karma
#

God if you fuck up a verilog macro gl have fun debugging that shit

devout vault
#

I can't easily build Dolphin (the emulator, you linux nerds) as a submodule because their files use the wrong project root variable. So I had to make part of the cmake script edit their cmake scripts before running their cmake scripts

cinder karma
#

The error messages are horrifically bad

devout vault
devout vault
#

The C++ reflection stuff should help with some cases

#

But then you have to deal with the C++ reflection stuff

uncut seal
#

I hate cmake because everytime I had to build something with it, the readme said "just use this command and Cmake will do everything with no issue!" and it didn't build, and it had a 50 lines unreadable cmake that I could in no way debug. Also if I understand correctly, Cmake writes makefiles that will run commands to build C++, so that sounds stupid as fuck?

cinder karma
#

I really need to learn user defined $functions i think

devout vault
cinder karma
#

It actually might be what I'm trying to do 99% of the time

devout vault
#

The example I'm thinking of where I would much prefer CMake over makefiles was the game project that never went anywhere which could compile for:

  • windows (and probably other PC platforms eventually)
  • homebrew wii
  • homebrew 3ds
  • web (via emscripten)
worn remnant
#

that's the other nice thing about make. it's old and crusty and no one wants to improve it so it's still just like it was when you (i) learned it

devout vault
#

That's fair

#

But I had to do very little actual compiler specific stuff for this project

#

Mainly because the toolchain .cmake files already exist, but still

cinder karma
#

Anyways

crystal wren
#

And you could whip up a makefile to do non-programming things a bit easier than it would be to write a script for it, depending on the task.

@ atra what do you have to say for your profession

steel kraken
#

first past the post doesn't let you choose your leader anyway because spoiler effect and other factors mean the true leader you might actually agree with never ended up on the ballet to begin with to not spoil the racce

#

that being said I do have ranked choice voting and vote for one of the major 2 parties because I don't trust the minor parties to actually negotiate and compromise to actually get stuff done and just do purity tests for social media clout

safe dragon
#

(I know you meant ballot)

#

it's just a funny mental image for all the candidates to have to participate in a ballet performance

#

It'd probably make the average candidate a fair bit younger

cinder karma
#

And/or the industry kinda depends wayyy too heavily on defense for money smth

dusty pollen
#

(the usual ranked choice algorithm is: count all the first choice votes. if nobody has a majority, eliminate the lowest ranked candidate. repeat counting each person’s top non-eliminated vote and eliminating the lowest candidate until either someone has an absolute majority or there’s only one candidate left)

cinder karma
#

Yeah. I'm not sure there is disagreement on what ranked choice is

#

There is disagreement on whether or not it's the "best" one

#

(Still better than fptp)

#

Also, the whole thing about votes being counted incorrectly is a right wing fever dream

safe dragon
#

being better than fptp is like being a car being faster than a mobility scooter

#

almost speaks for itself

prisma flume
#

at least in our local election the independents won the last one (or the one before)

safe dragon
#

we don't vote for people really, we vote for parties so that's not an option

#

but we have quite a few of em

prisma flume
#

we do both; you can vote for the party or the person in a given election

#

but here independents are usually parties with people

#

like i'm not voting for Mr. Shrumble from the Pacifists And Anarchists Party, i'm just voting for the party, but i have the option to do so provided i only vote for people for each given party

safe dragon
#

technically we vote for a person cause voting ballot makes you check one of the people in the party, not the party itself, but almost no one has any fuckin idea who those people are so it's not very effective if that was the goal

#

have you seen dutch voting ballots

prisma flume
#

i'm not sure if there's such a thing as a perfect electoral system but australia has it pretty good

safe dragon
#

they're gigantic

prisma flume
#

ours get quite long haha

#

they sort of curl up and around the whole voting booth and you just slide it back and forth as you go

safe dragon
#

this is ours

cinder karma
#

In a way I'm not happy with the extreme-fixation of pols because you get the absolutely craziest people running

prisma flume
#

and that's just the brief stembiljet...

safe dragon
#

last election I did definitely wish we had ranked voting

#

basically every election I feel kinda forced to vote for one of the two "big" parties that are kinda what I want because voting for the smol ones does practically nothing

prisma flume
#

and so the world turns, as ten million individuals say 'but my action has no effect'

cinder karma
#

I wish we could vote more often for policy directly

#

But

#

You know

#

I live in the state of the nine million constitutional amendments and 75% of them are posturing

safe dragon
#

the stupid "smart voting" dilemma

prisma flume
#

mm, plenty of countries are in the same vice

safe dragon
#

yup

#

ranked voting would improve on that

#

cause you could still give them your "second choice"

cinder karma
#

Anyways none of this matters when neither party has a spine

safe dragon
#

😌

prisma flume
#

ranked/runoff voting is good for that. i can vote for my preferred independents with a clear conscience since i'm still pegging the mainstream parties in the order of how much i respect them

safe dragon
#

I'd comment more on that but we're already near the edge of what is suitable for this server

prisma flume

and, in plenty of cases, the independents as well

and f2 for rename

prisma flume
#

but do you use f4 for the address bar (not very useful)

#

alt+up for up is nice sometimes

devout vault
#

I will now, because sometimes I miss click trying to select the file path and end up going up a folder or something

#

I will also use that

#

(I am pretending I will remember any of those in >5 minutes)

prisma flume
#

yeah windows' edge-of-the-button behaviours are annoying more than they are useful

the only game I play that I would recommend to you specifically is Wordle

steel kraken
#

I can only do wordle if I also have a word calculator going on the side (using the full word list and not the answer subset)

#

was fun doing it in devtools console as it was decent practice for doing data manipulation, but the last time I took wordle seriously predated NYTimes buying it

I've done my open-source duty and reported a bug for svelte hc_pensive

time to see if I get insulted and they tell me I'm a dumbass and it's actually working as intended

(TeX's actual versioning scheme)

damn that dude is still alive?

he caused me much pain in uni

cinder karma

I didnt get my tex tangent

safe dragon
#

that's been brewing for nearly 2 years

devout vault
safe dragon
#

yup

devout vault
#

Is TeX roughly equal to LaTeX? (practically speaking, I assume it’s actually a subset/superset situation)

#

I have never used any of them

safe dragon
#

much like Vi vs Vim I just replace the former with the latter in my head

pliant snow
#

iirc LaTeX is a layer on top of TeX that does a lot of the really tedious page formatting stuff for you

safe dragon
#

I can't imagine how tedious TeX must be if LaTeX is an improvement

pliant snow
#

I think instead of just saying "this is a heading" or "this is a section" you had to define what a heading was, what font size, type, color, margins, everything

safe dragon
#

oh hc_pensive hc_pensive

devout vault
#

So if web pages were just xml, and you had to use CSS to define what every element actually meant?

#

That does sound painful

safe dragon

meanwhile web dev: resets all the browser default styling because they were chosen during the dark ages

Ichor my tex tangent plz

And inconsistent between browsers!

That's basically what bootstrap is right? At least the most minimal/original version of it?

Ichor if not tex tangent plz should I use whole wheat flour to feed my starter

When am I on topic I've stopped modding entirely

I'm sorry I can stop :p

no

I just wanted to make the meme

it's less funny if you stop

safe dragon
#

defines a billion classes and still never has what I need

#

tailwind does cause it has the benefit of generating the necessary classes at build time

#

but I prefer regular ol css (with a css reset section)

devout vault
#

Web dev having build time stuff still feels weird to me

Brought to you by the person who would edit their website's HTML, CSS, PHP, JS, and MySQL (via phpmyadmin) live

my TeX tangent is already scattered through chat history on here but i'll sum up real quick

devout vault
#

yayyyyy tangent

worn remnant
#

TeX is great but also cursed. i think you have to be donald knuth to fully enjoy it

#

most of the problem is that it behaves in inscrutable ways and making changes to almost anything requires you to have intimate knowledge of what is going on down there in the bowels where humans dare not tread

#

like you can redefine stuff but you will get Cursed Output unless you deeply understand what you are doing. it's hard to use

cinder karma
devout vault
#

Like windows

worn remnant
#

fair!

devout vault
#

Not even software strictly speaking. Another fun example being C++

#

We need government mandated software full rewrites every 8-10 years /s

#

(plz ignore upcoming anniversary of the game this server is for, the modders would kill us if we did that)

worn remnant
#

i also just think TeX's syntax is ugly, but that's not the same type of wtf as trying to accomplish things with it

cinder karma
#

Tbh I think it's fineeeee

#

Syntax wise

I'm the lead developer of a billing portal for a f50 company, my app handles billions of dollars per year flowing through it

We had a production patch this past weekend that introduced a lot of changes for EU customers, except in order for the changes to apply you need to use incognito or clear your cookies/cache. Management is complaining about this now and i've been saying for years how the app is too reliant on cookies and needs better architecture, but thats not up to me and everytime i've asked before now its been an insta reject 🥲

safe dragon
#

can't hear u I'm adding more cookies

#

work around the cookie size limit by having cookie_part7

devout vault
#

more. cookies. required.

#

Cookies might be favorite form of desert

fleet wren
#

i prefer localStorage, it has less sugar and more fiber

opal mortar
safe dragon
#

I've had plenty experiences with the cache getting in the way cause of files not being fingerpinted right or whatever else but I've never had the existence of specific cookies affect the functioning of a feature

#

though to be fair I've only worked on business software that's sold to clients. We didn't have any tracking cookies or anything of that nature. Really the only thing the cache was for was for authentication and whatever horrendous shit ASP.NET Web Forms needed to put there to function

opal mortar
#

All our user accounts have a "policy grid" that enables/disables/configures certain parts of the app depending on region, account type, etc, which is cached in the users browser until they manually log out (which ive been fighting against for this exact reason). New feature is checking for a specific policy in the cache that didnt exist beforehand and now its defaulting to false and the only solution is to tell customers to log out and back in, or effectively do the same thing by asking them to use a diff browser or clear their session storage

#

Tldr business people should not be making architectural decisions

safe dragon
#

😌

opal mortar
#

I feel like im living the opening sequence to stardew lol

safe dragon
#

at my old job we had the owner the of the company constantly tell use how to implement features because he had some strange belief he knew the right technical solutions to problems even though he'd never held a programming position in his life

#

some nasty shit was birthed out of that

#

eventually he started backing off because he sold like 80% of the business to some holdings company

#

he didn't really seem to care anymore, which was nice for us

#

that was the only thing that was nice about the holdings company's takeover

devout vault
#

If he doesn't know how to code, how's he gonna tell otherwise

safe dragon
#

we absolutely just lied to him sometimes

#

as you always do at a healthy work environment

Similar story - there was an SVP at my company who clearly had no hands-on coding experience, but caught wind of "GraphQL" being an amazing thing and insisted that everything else needed to implement/use it

marble jewel
#

I mean I think GraphQL is great and all, but she couldn't really explain why it was the right choice for everything, just that it was better

Meanwhile, I think she ultimately ended up getting let go because multiple security breaches happened under her leadership
