I too am a kde fan
iirc niri and sway are both wayland? but I’m not sure
I mean x11 didn’t seem to have scaling between 100% and 200%… (if I understand right)
wdym?
This conversation
I primary use cinnamon but I'm old
oh this is a specific gui, I doubt x11 is locked to that
I literally predates wayland
you should check xrandr
fractional scaling is only supported on Wayland yes
don’t most of us?
I assume hyperland is what selph would recommend
I used Linux before wayland
I think most of us use Linux before Wayland
nope I'd say kde actually
shit like niri/hyprland is not an extra technical load to be dropping yourself into rn
As someone who has never liked gnome, I disagree on that point
Lol, we use xfce at work
their vision includes not supporting features supported by every other environment that exists because they don't like them
Does KDE have fractional scaling or no
yes
Hmm
it even has experimental HDR support I think
the slider lets me pick 125%
I don’t care about HDR
like last I used KDE there's still a thousand different annoyances that would not fly in a more "corporate" desktop
and as much as I hate GNOME it is very "corporate"
i love how my monitor has a different brand name in the settings as the bezel
wait isn’t kde x11
I just want text that isn’t microscopic and isn’t astronomical
you can swap on lock screen
uh it's both but generally wayland by default these days
x11 breaks for me so im on wayland
For me now on Arch, it defaults to Wayland only. Had to specifically enable it in the screen manager!
Whatever Linux mint used had Wayland swapping on the lock screen
how about sway, which is essentially just i3 reimplemented for wayland
And that’s when The Lines™ happened
Huh
linux mint is still very much beta testing wayland support I think
It did say experimental
But the lines part seems a bit of an extreme issue
both but x11 primarily rn
So uhh... why the Linux, Casey? Did I miss it?
New laptop, don’t need windows for work stuff, so why not
I like that as a reason!
Anyways it sounds like the closest thing to a general consensus is KDE
What is this
Is this literally “can play audio”
I like my KDE. It'll be the most familiar to OS X/Windows, and it's flexible as hell.
Or something I don’t need
Pulseaudio is what I use
Pipewire, I'd say. It's just newer, and I've not run into any issues.
But I'm ancient
Hmm, the votes are split
pulseaudio is still alive???
Also Casey in the land of Linux you can have multiple windows managers
Somebody else, come back and tie break
I use pulse
(that was partially sarcasm)
We have both gnome and xfce
Well that sounds confusing
Pulse is the only one I’ve heard of
Eve if I never knew what it was
You can usually switch between them at the login screen
Literally just recognize the name
Pulseaudio is the devil I know
Might even be from my SFML days
In reality both will work, so it's really... just whatever fits your vibe for the most part regarding the audio choices.
tbh yeah if you're not going to tinker with audio stuff it doesn't matter
I don’t know what the difference is, so literally the only vibe I have is that pipewire involves pipes and wires, while pulse audio has pulses
(what the hell are pulseaudio and pipewire what do they do)
Which am I most likely to be able to find help for if I run into problems
Look at the Arch wiki pages for each!
pulseaudio pulses audios. pipewire pipes wires
Solid way to check that.
Audio daemons
My attention span is already dangerously close to negative infinity
If yall won’t choose for me I can ask uber
i thought you were vietnamese
I didn’t know we could make polls here
stop the count
Also I’m not gonna wait an hour, just FYI
That would be a long time!
it's 2025. pipewire is the only optino
discord wouldn't even have screensharing if you don't pick pipewire
Oh boy, a list that doesn’t even reach the Bs without scrolling. How exciting
Pulseaudio ewwww /lh I have only ever had issues with it
I imagine that list is literally the entire arch repository
You should be good without any of those extras! That menu is... silly.
yeah
It's pretty much that I think, yeah.
I kinda guessed but wanted to be sure
Is that part of the archinstall script?
yeah
damn, really? iirc that was barely not a cli when I first did it
It's honestly really good if you're just doing fairly normal things.
I do use it to install a few extra things straight away cause window managers don't tend to come with a whole lot
I don't even remember that list ngl, I kinda zoomed through the script
realistically I believe you'd press / to go into a search and find the package...
but unlike some operating systems, I’ve never had to reinstall arch, so it’s been a while (looking at you, windows)
You can skip this and install later
archinstall has completely overhauled its UI like 4 times since it was created
I think I've used every iteration
for some reason
They made it significantly easier to use in this last revision for sure
oh, that’s why, I don’t think archinstall existed when I first installed arch
honestly I don't think I could succesfully install arch without archinstall unless I have a guide with me
I used the very detailed wiki installation guide
Oh, arch has an installer now?
I don't know all the random ass commands for fstab and shit
I think the first time I used it the script was an unofficial thing you had to put on the USB before booting
yeah
at the time, iirc the arch community was actually very against install scripts
you basically just launch the arch live usb and run the archinstall command
that's generally how you do it these days
Some sects still are, a lot of people still hate them ferociously
the elitist era of arch that resulted in the "I use arch btw" memes...
But I don't often listen to "purists" because ain't nothing of mine is pure
thankfully all the elitists then moved on to random shit like void linux or nixos or something
I think it was around at the time but not very popular so I must not have run into it when I was installing
Ok redhat
Nix is the "I use Arch btw" of 2025 😌
personally I learned a lot from manual installation about how my system worked but not everyone wants to or needs to learn all that stuff
I did once install arch manually
and I kept learning more just from maintaining it
I just followed a guide and had only a slight clue wtf was going on
I've been through the manual install process before, I wasn't the biggest fan, but it was also when I was very unfamiliar with a cli based OS
I recon I could do it again now a lot quicker
tbh a lot of it was way too confusing. the install guide was just the jumping off point, but you were expected to follow every link and digest and understand every concept on your own
I think today I'd understand it a lot better
though I'd still have to google everything
does anyone just know fstab commands
maybe an IT guy I suppose
The day I learn fstab commands is the day I transcend the need for a computer
I do know how to edit the fstab file though, not a clue how to reload without googling
Tbh I need to like
Learn everything again i think
You guys can tell, right....
Nooo not at all... /lh
nope
Atlas you dont count my dad introduced me to Linux before you were even born
I don’t think you’re meant to REMEMBER most of it
I learned Unix from Jurassic Park
atra you are not seventy
my dad has never used linux before
Jurassic Park really did not prepare me for what actual Unix systems actually look like
My favorite part of Unix is how files are 3d warehouses
a well known part of it
ext4 made it 4d
my mom spends several hours a day every day on a steam deck so I guess she uses linux
Technically the truth
[laughs in android]
it's kinda like saying you use FreeBSD cause ur car uses it
android is unix though, right? not technically linux iirc (genuinely asking lmao)
I use java BC my radio uses it, totally know the ins and outs of all the JVM
I thought it was the Linux kernal underneath it all?
android uses the linux kernel but not the rest is how I vaguely remember it
Android is Linux. Linux is a kernel not everything else.
Android is Linux
I don't think android uses the regular linux kernel either
I'm a physicist because I exist in the world and I'm made out of molecules
it's not GNU/Linux
It's GNUoogle/Linux.
"regular Linux kernel" isn't a thing

hmm, I thought it didn’t use the linux kernel, that’s why I asked
must have misremembered
(as much as I despise the meme I think GNU/Linux is usually what most people consider a typical Linux OS, and Android definitely falls outside of that umbrella)
Definitely, yeah.
Agreed
my world was shattered when I found out stalman never actually said the famous gnu/linux quote

iOS and MacOS are UNIX right? Which isn't Linux? They're based on FreeBSD?
Windows is Linux /s
Some BSD based I think, yeah.
windows is DOS
I wonder how much of Apple's stuff is based on open-source at this point
Not a lot I would assume?
user facing software, probably none to zero aside from WebKit
0% they will make it closed source when touched
I will however say almost certainly all of their stuff relies on open source stuff
So is the playstation 4/5 iirc!
I had a feeling the PS was, but I wasn't certain in the slightest, nor was I certain which ones either
Apple is too busy selling $300 phone bags to worry about open-source license compliance
It's the iPod sock all over again
what
what
Apple sold a $300 literal book
Their business model certainly is businessing
fun fact, Linux is not UNIX (it never got certified). macOS is though
I lied it's $230 not $300 but yeah
the thign I really just hate most about this is that for some weird ass reason this will somehow actually become a real thing people use and become a fashion statement
idk how apple does it
The iPod had a knitted "sock" to carry it and they also cost an arm and a leg when they came out I believe, it was literally just a sleave the size of a babies sock
wha
wha
wha
that's such an ugly book
The book is meant to sit on your coffee table so that people know how much money you have to waste
how did they make like half of the united states part of their cult smh
They convinced people that having an iPhone is a status symbol way back when
I have 2 encyclopedia from like 50 years ago for that, but they were from a charity shop for 2 quid each
this is somehow worse than the $1000 monitor arm
And then they made their shitty OS not work the same as any other OS among other things so people got vendor lockin'd
why does discord look a little muddy on my side monitors
Probably text subpixel rendering
make sure everyone for some reason uses your messaging app that literally does not work on any other phone and then somehow succeed in that (only in the US thought cause that didn't work anywhere else)
Someone mentioned text looked different earlier, possibly an update?
But why would it do on the side monitor - ie. the ones that don't have any scaling
that was me yes
Text looks normal on main monitor
oh uh
(the built in display)
I'm guessing cause it's an xwayland window
Oop😬
Is it just text? Do non-text things look proper and crisp?
if it looks sharp in the browser version then I'm going with xwayland
I'm not sure how to tell with not-text, but it's not just discord actually
The jetbrains toolbox does it too
does that side monitor use display scaling at all
I still vote for trying messing with your font sub-pixel rendering in system settings.
No, it's at 100%
Is that different per monitor?
shouldn't be
hmmm 100%...
I'd try launching discord as a wayland window and see if that fixes it
Oh yeah, and the discord application icon is invisible for some reason. So that's fun
not ideal
Browser discord isn't muddy (but does have the color difference, not that that's surprising)
also I literally don't know how to do this
You can also try Vesktop which comes with some Linux-friendlier tweaks
uh set the environment variable ELECTRON_OZONE_PLATFORM_HINT to wayland or auto and then relaunch discord in that state
I would go so far as to say you really need Vesktop, because when I was running the native Discord app it wasn't detecting idle status properly.
So it was eating all my notifications
Very friendlier
Changing legacy application scaling from "apply scaling themselves" to "scaled by the system" fixed the muddiness.
(Even though it's at 100% scaling, yes)
🌈
Oh but that can't be set per monitor
I await the day x11 just explodes and dies
basically every remaining display issue I run into is due to x11
I'm a little spooked out by the idea of using an unofficial discord thing
Like I've never used Better Discord or whatever it is either
Do make sure you have a notification Daemon aswell (on arch this is), discord (and vesktop) has had issues where it just randomly crashed BC it can't find one
kde comes with one
Ahh you've kde nice choice
Vesktop is mostly vanilla until you start modding/theming it. AFAIK there are no known repercussions to simply using Vesktop.
No repercussions for vencord entirely currently AFAIK
If they were banning people just for using vencord, you'd be hit for being on vesktop too
brb implementing malware in vesktop
Vesktop/Vencord are pretty much interchangeable
It's just one has you install Discord first
(I mean sure, Vesktop has some more built-in tweaks, but not substantially different)
"why are discord notifications echoing"
suddenly notices I left the web discord tab open
Why use apps when you can just have 500 tabs open
because the websites redirect me to mobile apps with an embedded browser that has the forms they removed from their website 🔥
Just disable javascript, that fixes everything /s
I love when tbe entire lage is <div id="app"></div>
Audio? What?

One of us... one of us...
no votes for WASAPI
Our work AC is broken 🙁
In particular, it's dumping cold air all over me
The outside temp doesnt even justify the AC being in
Btw I cant see kde without singing

I see you're in the framework cult
Yeah, we talked casey into it
Khloe! Are you an arch
I have a server that's running arch, but my laptop is running Bazzite.
And I still have Windows on my main PC for annoying reasons
The Valve announcements today really derailed my thoughts, lol. I made absolutely no progress on the latest dumb project casey tricked me into
What are you making?
Hey now, you went in an entirely different direction than the nonsense I was talking about
(Tbh I have no clue what valve announced and I dont care to know)
C# for the Java Virtual Machine. Or, rather, a C# like language because some language constructs are infeasible on the JVM, like: unsafe stuff and pointers, stackalloc, structs, and anything about generics that requires knowing types at runtime
Smh structs and runtime type generics are sorta doable with enough nonsense
(Ie. What the thing I was trying to update does)
structs are absolutely not "doable" lmao you just make a class and go "lalala see it's a struct I said so I promise"
So not a struct lol
Doable syntactically, yes 😛 StructHolder<meow>
With the thing I was doing? It warns you, and if you do it again it deletes your project out of spite
Also Java doesn't have separate types for unsigned int/long/etc. so that's a fun language distinction.
Oxidation seems fun
Hissssssss
(I have used a memcpy before.)
(I have too - or at least the unsafe c# version)
(Well, the c++ version too, definitely, just not IN c#)
How is kotlin to use
Honestly, I could implement runtime types
I have no reason to use Java
This is like 95% for Minecraft modding purposes
(Both of ours, I believe)
Honestly, I haven't used Kotlin. I don't like how the syntax looks, even though it definitely does many things better than Java.
You have rust as an option
Kotlin seems so much more comfy to use than Java
And you'll never take my stackallocs from me
Okay looks like Bazzite is for gamers so I am going to ignore it
I've never used arch.....I got peer pressured into Ubuntu
Bazzite's more interesting thing is it being immutable and snapshot based
What does that even mean like I
Also you cant sell me on anything I dont recognize 😛
The root file system is readonly, so you can't accidentally break it by uninstalling a critical package. In theory.
That sounds annoying
What is more fun than breaking your laptop 40 minutes before you have to give a presentation?
(But more seriously....it is a lot of stuff I dont need on a personal machine.)
Like, I barely use my personal machine as is
How bad is the nvidia instability problem
Like actually I'm thinking of writing my own spice engine but with gpu
Apparently my windows updated
This is literally the opposite of what I want from notepad
I like notepad because it can do nothing but plain text
Apparently formatted documents have markdown mode, but like
It doesn't even actually italicize with the markdown format specifiers, so what's the point
(I assume that means the document is saved as markdown, though)
died 2024 born 2025 welcome back WordPad
not to invoke the slippery slope fallacy (actually - completely to invoke the slippery slope fallacy), but... how long until notepad turns into MS Word 2.0 (and we have to pay for it) 😔
No .rtf support, so not quite yet
How goes KAR?
You're a linuxer now
Demo hasn't started back up yet
Not on my desktop
But you're now insulates from Microsoft BS
If Microsoft ever pissed you off you can do full time linux
(Too lazy to attempt janky meme on mobile)
A: “Hmm. What should we use to advertise our new wearable tech device?”
B: “How about something about The Ring That Always Watches You and Will Definitely Corrupt You”
A: “Great idea! You get a raise and promotion”
It’s not the first time. It’s not even the first time for that franchise. But…. man
If this thing gives me more Microsoft on my finger get me the hell away from it
Outlook offended me today
It would not display an attachment on an email
That is what email is for
The attachment was a PDF
Outlook? Huh, the usual culprit is Word
Also who the hell uses a ring for Solidworks
That sounds made up ngl
Maybe a scam?
Outlook is the one that annoys me daily because I have to use it
I have many ways to get around using word
(Though not quite enough, I had to use it today)
It's a stream deck on your finger?
Hilarious, they just decided that probably I enjoyed windows
Oh god why
I....why not just use a mouse like God intended
It’s a mouse on your finger
(If there is any use of it left. It’s not enough.)
Sadly govt documents believe in word
(Even notepad isn’t safe, based on my earlier discovery)
Sometimes also my students send me .docx
Elizabeth should I use haskel
Learn you a Haskell for great good, is that it?
The only word worth believing in is the word of Yoba, may they bless my ancient fruit wine with iridium quality
I wouldn’t learn it for useful things, but it seems fun as a hobby
There are many such cases
You could pick up some recreational category theory
“Why were you looking into running Godot on the GameCube recently ish?”
“…why not?”
I should sleep
It’s a theory yeah
I should sleep, but I probably won’t
Early morning tomorrow intersects poorly with owl tendencies
I think having clash would be actually good for work
Night night!
I'll shut up about Haskell and Japanese curry
I too need to do my French and go to bed
Appeasing the owl
It is definitely past “must have heat” time here
We’ve had freezing temps, and nearby even snow
the fact that Outlook imagines the first, top, default, go-to, primary context action for an attached pdf is not to download it, forward it, or send it to another program, but instead to Summarize(tm) it with Microsoft Copilot(tm) properly fucks me off
the very same Microsoft Copilot(tm) that i disabled in outlook and windows independently already
i HATE ambient and multimodal agentic user experiences
You know what
I'm glad we don't get outlook with ai
Blueberry! What is your Linux distro of choice
where's the registry key to explode Cortana(tm) permanently forever
Is it arch
i have only ever used Ubuntu for schoolwork and something called Puppy to recover some windows data
where's the administrative group policy entry for completely obliterating agentic user experiences
I feel like every story I hear out of Windows users nowadays is like someone venting about an abusive relationship they can't get out of
we had a good thing going. they let me use my software and i use their operating system
now they re-enable hands free mobile mode on my headphones after every restart and my steam context windows turn into a black square after the first sleep
Don't worry you get these stories from Linux users too
iirc windows 7 exploded/collapsed/melted and i needed my appdata and such back
which mightve been why i got windows 11
I recall the two years I spent with no way to use a gui to launch a program
at least for linux the abuse is mutual
I broke that part kf the windows manage
And for two years I wojld simply launch a terminal and go firefox &
The only time I’ve used Linux this was in fact my experience
see the reason i use windows over linux (other than photoshop) is that i want the minimum possible suffering out of my day
I assume I was too dumb to find the buttons
I like suffering
Oh god was xmonad involved
i don't want to fuck with the settings every day. i want to edit nothing and enjoy my life
It was all the rage
My years as a Mac user taught me command line fortunately
Sorry you just get ads everywhere now
No it was literally a cluster computer lol
Wasn’t mine at all
Very standard install
I literally just couldn’t find the buttons
Sadly we made sand think
What if I drop my laptop in the nearest river and walk into the sunset forever
i don't actually get ads in windows at all, just the usual corporate ai shovelware
which is more in the software than the os
huh
i must've fucked off whatever setting that was when i first picked up win11
there's a lot of bloatware to disable
oh, i skipped 10 entirely. revolting
not that 11 is much better but it does at least look nice while it fucks me off
I'm going back to Linux tbh
ah, microsoft teams reminding me i can reenable Microsoft Copilot(tm) for the second (third?) time today
New quote added by kittycatcasey as #6741 (https://discordapp.com/channels/137344473976799233/1215712021207720006/1438401511993643139)
the good news is my desky desk and footrest and dual monitor arm are on the way 🙂↕️
finally, something i can trust, with no value-added computer bullshit. a wooden board
but consider: wifi-connected footrest that collects biometric data from your feet's blood flow
unfortunately the desk does come with an app but i choose to pretend it doesn't
( this was going to be put in mmg but I figured it might be better here?)
I'm looking for some guidance on mod organisation, specifically with version control and Git, I would like to have all my mods in a single repo but each folder within the repo be under it's own separate version control, having them all under a single version control system seems very clunky and prone to my own miss management, I have looked into git worktree and git flow but they seem just as clunky and not exactly what I'm thinking of, I'm having no luck finding anything similar either. I don't really want to have separate repos for each mod as it would clog up my github and be an annoyance to find anything (if I could put repos in a folder I'd certainly go with that, even if it was just a github only thing), if anyone has any ideas or ways that could help solve this "issue" I'm having, it would be greatly appreciated
an example of the repo fil structure would be something like this:
Stardew Mods Repo
├── .git
├── mod1
│ ├── .git
│ └── manifest.json
└── mod3
├── .git
└── manifest.json
this is pretty much because I use assets and code from various other of my mods (like a pick and place system at this point) so having access to them without opening 5 different code editors would be great
You have contradicting goals.
One repo and seperate version control are incompatible goals
Gotcha, that explains why I can't find anything that solves it then
You can have a repo reference other repos with submodules, but can be a pain in the ass and would need to continuously update the outer repo to point to the newer commits of each submodule
But that would still break your goal of clogging up your GitHub profile
to my understanding submodules are like symlinks (in a very simplified manner)? that's what it looks like from reading the git docs
Kinda, rather than the contents of the folder being defined inside the repo it's a pointer to a different repo instead
But the physical filesystem once fully cloned/pulled would mostly look like what you want, it's just a bitch to maintain
Instead of git submodules, just have an SVN/Mercurial repo for each individual mod on a different host instead. /j
it seems like ease of maintaining does not go with easy to navigate across repos
But yeah, I'm not sure there really is an elegant way around this. I considered submodules for mine, but it's just such a burden.
But in terms of polyrepo you can have a vscode workspace defined outside of version control that has the various mods repos open
then the issue of clogging up my github page comes back, I did think of that idea and have used it for a smaller group of repos, it's just not ideal either
I suppose you could have a separate account for just the individual mods?
There's a reason most of us gave up and just followed pathos's lead with monorepo
But then that's messy in a different way.
Monorepo where you just have some self control to keep commits contained to one mod at a time minimises most of the downside
I did also think of a separate account but that would be even more of a hassle to me than my original though XD
Branch protection at least really helps with that self control for me.
I think I'll have to toss together a salad of branch protection and general self control, I think a decent amount could be automated too, but I may just be over inflating the need for it
I personally don't care enough to go through the effort of branch protection (or precommit hooks) as I'll just get annoyed at past me trying to get in present me's way
In a codebase where other people are actually contributing, sure. And would turn branch protection on in all my work codebases where the expectation is everything is getting code review.
But for my solo personal repos, nah
If I didn't have to enter a pat whenever I clone or pull a repo I probably would have separate private ones then when a feature or bug is fixed, put it into the public repo, it's just so incredibly annoying finding the pat given I have to search through a password manager
Any sane git client shouldn't be requiring that
for private repos the git clone command needs them, it's such a pain
why don’t you set up your stored auth?
you shouldn’t have to do it every time, there are ways to just stay authed on a certain machine
I had no idea stored auth was a thing, bare with, going to check it out
Alternatively, SSH keys!
SSH keys is probably a better alternative for me, I didn't realise I could use them either, good to know! ty all for your help and ideas
The only distinction with SSH keys is you need to change your remotes to the SSH version.
if it's just about having everything in your editor, can you not just open the parent folder of your mods and commit/pull only the one you're working on?
ah wait, clogging github profile, forgot this part
My dear God your looking for svn
Anyways
This is probably against github tos but
I made an entire second githuv account
Just had a look (bc a second acoount being against tos seemed baffling) and you can only have 1 free account, however you can have a machine account which only does automated tasks which is decent news
Far from ideal, but a bit less annoying that submodules, is what I did before my monorepo
https://github.com/spacechase0/StardewModsSolution
definitely doesn’t fix projects on profile issue, though
I’ve contemplated that sort of thing before as well. Like, MMR on hit does exist, it’s just on a separate repo because I couldn’t figure something out. Which means I couldn’t use SpaceShared 😔
I wonder how generous Githubs definition of a machine account is (so far found not much) at this point however I'm tempted to just self host with as much automation as I can do, it would probably be a lot more customisable for sure
Sub modules are just so annoying if you need to actually make changes in them continuously
And there’s no way to say “hey this one is optional so if you don’t have the password you can just skip it”
Tbh it helps, atlas, that I'll be setting up a gitlab as my new professional account
No reason but the energy of the electrical engineers is actually on gitlab
Not hub
So if they delete my personal github I'm not mad
That's about right!
Why is github working for everything except for getting one specific file
it has a cat on it's lap, that's why it can't do anything
I don't know why but one of the panels (one I set up with clipboard, sticky note, and calculator) stopped accepting input focus
No keyboard input, and the clipboard thing is acting like it always has mouse focus
Trying to get flameshot to show on all monitors correctly using KDE window rules. My monitors are like this, and it captures everything, but places the window on the main monitor. So the capture shows the left monitor on the main monitor (with a black margin above), and the middle monitor on the right monitor (with the bottom portion cut off), hence doing this.
However, KDE does not want to place the monitor in the black null zone
Which means the best I can do is something like this, at least that I've figured out so far
Or, to show more clearly
This
Becomes this on the capture screen
If I try to do a "null zone" position, it just goes back to main monitor default position
Will fix that later I guess
meanwhile, what the heck
Im surprised mint doesnt come with less
less should be installed alongside git, installed using pacman right?
Main thing that ended up making me change was that the default window manager didn't allow fractional scaling, and the wayland stuff was super buggy
Yeah, but it wasn't
That's really odd
this (re: mint wayland buggy)
Forgejo is super easy to set up
Oh, I guess I have the man pages installed, which has it has a dependency. I didn't recall ever installing less manually
(Gitea fork, its the thing codeberg runs on)
It' s an optional dependency, I'm looking at it now
Which makes sense, since you can set the PAGER to whatever you want
I'm guessing you didn't install base-devel
that's basically a combination package of a bunch of dev tools
why wouldn't that be installed already
not everyone's a dev
git and less aren't in base-devel
Thank you for the rec, I have seen forgejo floating around various different places but I was never too sure as it seems to be quite young, I'll have a further look into it, it seems like it should be a decent fit especially for organisation
Isn't basically everyone gonna have to compile something at some point
terminal pager
Pretty sure there's proper account stuff by default, I just have it set up for one account and no signups
huh
I had installed via man-db
oh,t hat explains why I already have it and had this issue
You probably want man-db and man-pages installed if you want documentation for stuff
how is man not installed by default
is this a distro for people with every linux command fully memorized
No it's a distro where nothing is installed by default
insanity
I'll make my own
Crumble's Linux: Crumblux, if you so desire
that's arch for ya
if you want sane defaults go with idk CachyOS or smth
or Ubuntu
I was trying to think of another "Arch with sane defaults" distro but Cachy seemed to have eaten them all in the collective noosphere, is it that good
Just have a custom dkpg
I love your hostname
(It's framework-cattop to differentiate from the mac laptop, which is just cattop)
im so boring over here with name-desktop
I've never thought to do anything fun with the hostname like at all, Just bog standard entirely
at least my pis and VPSes are more interesting
[random berry on wikipedia page for berries]pi
I need to think of a fun idea to name my server, atp it's just trying to fish out a cable that's stopping me from setting it up
Yeah, you could probably make stuff like issue management software too with that sort of name
Or a GitHub-like
You know, normal hobby projects
I feel something like that would pair well with describing the time taken to do something as "Story Points"
my desktop hostname is mansion, and my phone hostname is house
so like only 50% boring
What r the insane defaults of arch
well judging from casey's misadventures not having less or man preinstalled
or even coreutils? not sure though
I also heard network drivers (mainly for wifi cards) could be a pain but I heard that years ago
I actually ran out of Ar Tonelico names for my computer.
.. I'm going to move on to Mana-Khemia then
(I mean, I haven't truly ran out but)
Wifi was indeed a pain yes
(I am not naming my computer Ionasal.kkll.Preciel)
Though i wasn't sure if it's arch bullshit or general linux bullshit there
could be both. Modern linux is a lot better at recognizing base chipsets, but
I have dreams occasionally of trying to download graphcs drivers to an old Win98 box with 64MB RAM just to geta linux install to work. >_>
('dreams'.)
i still have very slow wifi that only works with non-hidden networks
or git
Yeah, that's why I recommended CachyOS since it comes with most of the defaults you'd expect
Ah, but you see
tbh git is more forgivable being missing
If you mentioned that yesterday, I completely missed it
And I don't wanna set up a third time
I did mention it but it has ||Blazingly Fast|| as the tagline and it triggered auto crab repellers
Oh, that one
which one did you pick?
(well there's like an 87% chance they deliberately picked that tagline for the memes)
To be fair, it was built for the purpose of coming with their open sourced optimizations. Some of which are finding themselves back to the main Arch distro. But their initial claim to fame was because of their gaming performance.
They also have a separate handheld gaming distro intended for things like the Steam Deck.
Started with linux mint, quickly had to change because of this #programmers-off-topic message
So now using arch (btw)
Huh. Weird that Mint's doing that. Arch is decent but it does require a bunch of setup
the initial problem probably could have been solved by installing another WM/DE, but why waste the golden opportunity to gain the ability to claim that you use Arch (btw)
The wayland support is still marked experimental
god I should probably switch eventually
(and I needed to switch to wayland because 100% monitor scale was too small and 200% was way too big)
Goldilocks and the three bears monitor scales
oh yeah Mint only just added wayland
KDE wayland quite solid tho, I've been using it for years
Do you want a list of packages I would recommend having installed lol
add a css rule i guess
is my solution not good enough
it's too good
i dont have notepad
Well MS paint won't go thin enough unless you make your channel list absurdly wide
But I'm sure your computer has something that will work
Even linux - just open vim vi with a text file
close enough
Stuff you might want
7zip - .7z compression support
amd-ucode/intel-ucode - Microcode optimizations for your processor type (requires a little bit of config to set up)
ark - KDE's archive utility GUI
base - You probably have this
base-devel - Compilers and shit
btop - Terminal system display I really like
exfatprogs - If you want to partition stuff in exFAT or NTFS or whatever
firefox
git
gwenview - KDE's image viewer
imagemagick - Convert between image types, you might have it as a dependency
libreoffice-fresh - MS Office alternative
man-db and man-pages - Manuals
neovim - Please run sudo pacman -Rns emacs first
noto-fonts-cjk - Asian font support
okular - KDE PDF app
openssh - SSH support
pacman-contrib - I use it for the 'pactree' command, which shows a tree of dependencies for packages
partitionmanager - KDE disc utility
paru (or yay) - AUR helper
pipewire/pipewire-alsa - Audio support
reflector - Fetches and sorts the fastest Arch package mirrors
ttf-hack-nerd - My preferred font
unrar - un-.rar files
unzip - yep
uv - Python package management
wget - Download files from commandline
wine-staging - It's wine
wl-clipboard - Wayland clipboard support
zip - Why zip and unzip are separate idk
Stuff you might not want but I would recommend
atuin - Sync your terminal commands with other machines
bat - cat but better
fd - find but butter
fzf - fuzzy searcher, probably a dependency
qpwgraph - GUI to pipe audio sources into sinks
ripgrep - grep but better
zoxide - Like 'cd' but will jump based on your most used directories
That's blocking the server list (I think?), and aquo specifically said channel list
That being said I'm curious what pack that is from - skyblock is fun
i cropped the server list, too much effort to censor
mainly because i want more users for https://mods.gay/sky++
Ah. I tried to judge from the bottom corner if that was the case or if you just put a window over the entire edge, but I guess I was wrong
I've never even heard of skyblock.net
server from the guy that made skyblock
Is it like the hypixel skyblock except more true to actual skyblock
it's like hypixel skyblock except 7 years older
and not an mmo
and i get paid to write code sometimes
"and not an mmo"
so yeah, more true to actual skyblock
Though if it's from the skyblock guy that's not surprising
although he did want to do an mmo it never happened
I'm curious, but there are no screenshots on the website I see, and I'm not curious enough to log in or find a video
...oh, the shop has actual gameplay stuff sold
basically no videos from anyone with more than 200 views aside from people talking about the trademark legal issues lol
(I get that cosmetics isn't enough for all but the largest servers)
mhm
(But even aside from the TOS, I just don't want to play on a server that has that sort of thing)
nobody actually buys the items, just the ranks and keys.. i hope
the items are obscenely overpriced
It's not about people buying them
no i know what you mean yeah
It's about how that impacts the game design (most likely)
yeah it's a challenge to do things without a rank
fair few do decent but majority, yeah
Oh, and the ranks have gameplay stuff too? Yikes
oh yep
It seems wget isn't found on pacman anymore which is a shame, unless it's an AUR package
Should be
Let me try and install it rq
404 from every mirror which is a shame
I'm very familiar with wget due to ComputerCraft mod for minecraft, I've never actually used curl -o before
not sure how curl -o works with binary data tbf
When's the last time you did an -Syu?
Arch be rolling release you should probably be fine just running -Syy tho then
Reflector is the best at maintaining your mirrors so look into that
Yep that made it work, weird? not entirely sure what caused that
thank you, that would've stumped me for a while for sure
Just looking into reflector, it was something I was going to make myself, good to know it already exists however, very useful!
Remind me in 4 weeks to do useful things
remind me in 28 days
Basically your local package database was out of sync with the mirrors arch mirror's update constantly and sometimes your system might thinks an old package version still exists
pacman -Syy forces pacman to throw away the old database and download a fresh one.
That’s why it fixed the 404 — the mirrors didn’t have the versions your system thought existed.
Is the tldr

Bot
Botto plz
Bot died, RIP
Seeing so many Linux users in this server is a surprise ngl
Why?
We all crave the pain and joy of using linux and ditching Microsoft
Rare I join a server and there's people who uses Linux in the server tho this a pretty big server so makes sense
Remind me in 2 minutes to tell atra that you just hate them specifically
Okay I guess it really is dead
Can't learn without pain
I mean to be fair, the linux users are pretty localized to this specific channel
It is called programming off topic so checks out
remnisces ye olde days, when the channel was called #kirby-air-riders
(yes, ~4 days ago is ye olde days now)

If i had poll perms I'd poll this channel for what OS they r on
Feel like arch might win
I wonder if it's 50:50 now

I mean it would need to be multiple choice
Justin Bieber
My main computer is still windows
Oh yes, I use Hannah Montana OS btw
digging deep into the meme archives I see
Don't think we can list all the distros
we all know the real meme distro of the modern age is Nix dont shoot me
Well, that'd be a problem even if it wasn't multiple choice
Fr
According to my recent Twitter feed it's omarchy

Which is just an opinionated Arch
Based on the Ruby on Rails dev
Tells you everything you need to know
ah yeah that, I deliberately chose not to mention it but it's an even bigger meme
how tf it got 100k from cloudflare is beyond me
ah yeah that one is best ignored
other than that the suits at CF definitely was just stamping shit without looking
I did see someone install it and it seems a lot easier to install, albeit shipped with a decent amount of bloat
PWA?
powered web app
Ahhh gotcha
Or something like that iirc
progressive web app. Essentially a website but it's pretending to be an app
I was close enough
ngl I do like the idea of PWAs, I just wouldn't have one of an AI site
6.3 GB iso
Which is bigger than windows 11 ISO
Impressive stuff really
that isn't fitting on any USB I have
I'm so ancient i recall the 700mb limit

back in the edo period
If your going use an LLM locally imo is best
That's if you have a powerful enough PC tbf
imagine the size of that ISO if it shipped an actual AI model

At least another 10 gigs
He's going ship one that most PC can't run and make it 50 GB
Anyways. Yes. The Linux people hide here
Here are your complementary thigh high socks
I'm still waiting for mine smh, I mean I do have some already, but free stuff is the best stuff
I don't have any wtf
I'm afraid I was wearing thigh high socks and was a femboy long before I decided to switch to Linux

I mean, I'm a tax bill
one of the most welcome ones too
I've never worn a thigh high sock, don't tell the other transfems

Man, reddit is so boring now that half of my hopium-grade conspiracy theory subreddits are... no longer hopium grade nor conspiracy theories
(r/ValveDeckard)
You get a valve VR and a valve computer
(what's left is the two hytale subreddits)
Tbh I cant see the valve compute being....cheaper enough
I guess somewhere around 800, with a greater chance of being higher
Yeahhhh
I was guessing $1k
My personal opinion is that I can likely do better if I'm good at scavenging
And I'm cheap as fuck lol
well of course, but people who have the knowledge and patience to assemble a small-form-factor lounge pc that just works aren't the target demographic
Hey that's 95% of the fun
and even then I doubt you can go as small as the Steam Machine with customer parts
equivalent power customer parts*
Probably not
But hey, why go with small when I can get aggressive with heat management
Everything is bigger in Texas

idk that saga of a guy chopping chives 27 days in a row until it was perfect was fun
I haven't checked the stock market yet but I wouldn't be surprised if I lost multiple thousands of dollars today 😛
27? It's still going
I liked the guy who mistook a pepper plant to be basil
Or was yesterday at least
What the heck are you guys talking about
oh yeah I blinked and it's day 38 now
Hasn't it turned into a soup yet? Clearly the knife isn't sharp enough
Some wonderful jokes have happened from it
I can't find it on that post, hold on
Chives are indeed hollow
I was incredibly confused for the first week or so I saw those flairs
ngl i thought chives was a regional term for green onions
Update....
I've been eating garlic chives this whole time not chives
Garlic chives? I have never heard of them before
Ahh they look quite nice, I'm gonna have to see if my local supermarket has them
i will never accept 'scallions' or 'shallots' as a term for green/spring onions
back to america with ye
Ngl I saw this message and then discord glitchrd
And for a second I thought bluebs banned me over that
Anyways shallots are different
Shallots are entirely different to free/spring onions? They're round I think?
Whoops missed your message atra
would that i still had such power
Shallots are the rich people oniojsnomp
Onions imo
Green and spring onions are apparently different
shallots are french onions and i won't hear any more about it
fennel doesn't count as onions because onions are good
And chives are different from all of them
I'm team onion myself (I'm also very cheap)
Honestly whenever I hear scallion I think of seafood like clams or something. For some reason.
So it always throws me for a loop
well that's probably just crossing wires over scallops
Also, since this discussion has started: onions, ewwww
Also who the fuck buys scallions
(literally makes me gag - mainly for texture to be honest, but it's associated with the flavor now too)
which in australia generally means scalloped potatoes rather than scallops. for some reason
Grow them on the windowsill like god intended
Ah, so I'm not crazy, I'm just insane
wha
please do 🙂↕️

Luffa - Wikipedia https://share.google/AiNwZQj4jfT3OTmAb
Luffa is a genus of tropical and subtropical vines in the pumpkin, squash and gourd family (Cucurbitaceae).
In everyday non-technical usage, the luffa, also spelled loofah or less frequently loofa, usually refers to the fruits of the species Luffa aegyptiaca and Luffa acutangula. It is cultivated and eaten as a vegetable, but must be harvested a...

I thought Kirby is a cat
bet you feel pretty stupid right now (okay I don't know what the original meme is, not editing again)
I had to do math to figure out if Kirby is older than I am
Given that I'm pretty sure Kirby is a small mammal....
why does being 33 years old make kirby an adult huh
cats are adults at 1, kirby probably takes like 100 years to start thinking
I mean if the law took mental maturity into account for legal age, the world would look a lot different, wouldn't it
what do you mean, kirby is the size of a truck
My mom is very disappointed in me all the time.

Mouthful Mode is the signature mechanic of Kirby and the Forgotten Land and its Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, which entails Kirby contorting himself in order to inhale larger objects than he would normally be able to. Instead of fully swallowing the objects, they get "stuck" in his mouth, and he conforms to the shape of the object in question, allo...
