dusty pollen
#

well, do you want x11 or wayland?

lethal walrus
#

I too am a kde fan

dusty pollen
#

iirc niri and sway are both wayland? but I’m not sure

devout vault
devout vault
#

This conversation

cinder karma
#

I primary use cinnamon but I'm old

dusty pollen
#

oh this is a specific gui, I doubt x11 is locked to that

cinder karma
#

I literally predates wayland

dusty pollen
#

you should check xrandr

fleet wren
#

fractional scaling is only supported on Wayland yes

cinder karma
#

Don't use xmonad

#

Kde is pretty good

dusty pollen
cinder karma
#

I assume hyperland is what selph would recommend

cinder karma
fleet wren
#

I think most of us use Linux before Wayland

safe dragon
#

nope I'd say kde actually

#

shit like niri/hyprland is not an extra technical load to be dropping yourself into rn

fleet wren
#

KDE is very good, but you can't beat GNOME in term of polish/Vision™

#

if that matters

ivory shadow
#

As someone who has never liked gnome, I disagree on that point

cinder karma
#

Lol, we use xfce at work

safe dragon
devout vault
#

Does KDE have fractional scaling or no

safe dragon
#

yes

devout vault
#

Hmm

safe dragon
#

it even has experimental HDR support I think

lethal walrus
#

the slider lets me pick 125%

devout vault
#

I don’t care about HDR

fleet wren
#

like last I used KDE there's still a thousand different annoyances that would not fly in a more "corporate" desktop
and as much as I hate GNOME it is very "corporate"

lethal walrus
#

i love how my monitor has a different brand name in the settings as the bezel

dusty pollen
#

wait isn’t kde x11

devout vault
#

I just want text that isn’t microscopic and isn’t astronomical

lethal walrus
#

you can swap on lock screen

safe dragon
#

uh it's both but generally wayland by default these days

lethal walrus
#

x11 breaks for me so im on wayland

dusty pollen
#

ah

#

anyway. i3 or nothing snob

crystal wren
devout vault
#

Whatever Linux mint used had Wayland swapping on the lock screen

safe dragon
#

how about sway, which is essentially just i3 reimplemented for wayland

devout vault
#

And that’s when The Lines™ happened

cinder karma
#

Huh

safe dragon
#

linux mint is still very much beta testing wayland support I think

devout vault
#

It did say experimental

cinder karma
#

Is cinnamon x11 or wayland

#

Xfce is x11

devout vault
#

But the lines part seems a bit of an extreme issue

safe dragon
#

both but x11 primarily rn

crystal wren
#

So uhh... why the Linux, Casey? Did I miss it?

devout vault
crystal wren
#

I like that as a reason!

devout vault
#

Anyways it sounds like the closest thing to a general consensus is KDE

#

What is this

#

Is this literally “can play audio”

crystal wren
#

I like my KDE. It'll be the most familiar to OS X/Windows, and it's flexible as hell.

devout vault
#

Or something I don’t need

cinder karma
#

Pulseaudio is what I use

crystal wren
#

Pipewire, I'd say. It's just newer, and I've not run into any issues.

cinder karma
#

But I'm ancient

devout vault
#

Hmm, the votes are split

fleet wren
#

pulseaudio is still alive???

cinder karma
#

Also Casey in the land of Linux you can have multiple windows managers

devout vault
#

Somebody else, come back and tie break

dusty pollen
#

I use pulse

fleet wren
#

(that was partially sarcasm)

cinder karma
#

We have both gnome and xfce

devout vault
#

Pulse is the only one I’ve heard of

#

Eve if I never knew what it was

cinder karma
#

You can usually switch between them at the login screen

devout vault
#

Literally just recognize the name

cinder karma
#

Pulseaudio is the devil I know

devout vault
#

Might even be from my SFML days

crystal wren
#

In reality both will work, so it's really... just whatever fits your vibe for the most part regarding the audio choices.

fleet wren
#

tbh yeah if you're not going to tinker with audio stuff it doesn't matter

cinder karma
#

At work we apparently use pulse

#

Tbh I didnt know we had audio to start with

devout vault
red crest
#

(what the hell are pulseaudio and pipewire what do they do)

devout vault
#

Which am I most likely to be able to find help for if I run into problems

crystal wren
#

Look at the Arch wiki pages for each!

fleet wren
#

pulseaudio pulses audios. pipewire pipes wires

crystal wren
#

Solid way to check that.

cinder karma
#

Audio daemons

devout vault
cinder karma
#

I remember having to fight pulse in the past

#

Casey

devout vault
#

If yall won’t choose for me I can ask uber

prisma flume
cinder karma
#

Pulseaudio is the devil I know.

#

Pipewire is the shiny new kid on the block

crystal wren
devout vault
#

I didn’t know we could make polls here

fleet wren
#

stop the count

devout vault
#

Also I’m not gonna wait an hour, just FYI

crystal wren
#

That would be a long time!

safe dragon
#

discord wouldn't even have screensharing if you don't pick pipewire

devout vault
#

Oh boy, a list that doesn’t even reach the Bs without scrolling. How exciting

hushed raven
#

Pulseaudio ewwww /lh I have only ever had issues with it

safe dragon
#

I imagine that list is literally the entire arch repository

crystal wren
#

You should be good without any of those extras! That menu is... silly.

safe dragon
#

yeah

crystal wren
#

It's pretty much that I think, yeah.

devout vault
#

I kinda guessed but wanted to be sure

hushed raven
#

Is that part of the archinstall script?

safe dragon
#

yeah

dusty pollen
#

damn, really? iirc that was barely not a cli when I first did it

crystal wren
#

It's honestly really good if you're just doing fairly normal things.

safe dragon
#

I do use it to install a few extra things straight away cause window managers don't tend to come with a whole lot

hushed raven
#

I don't even remember that list ngl, I kinda zoomed through the script

safe dragon
#

realistically I believe you'd press / to go into a search and find the package...

dusty pollen
#

but unlike some operating systems, I’ve never had to reinstall arch, so it’s been a while (looking at you, windows)

cinder karma
safe dragon
#

archinstall has completely overhauled its UI like 4 times since it was created

#

I think I've used every iteration

#

for some reason

hushed raven
#

They made it significantly easier to use in this last revision for sure

dusty pollen
#

oh, that’s why, I don’t think archinstall existed when I first installed arch SDVkrobusgiggle

safe dragon
#

honestly I don't think I could succesfully install arch without archinstall unless I have a guide with me

dusty pollen
#

I used the very detailed wiki installation guide

cinder karma
#

Oh, arch has an installer now?

safe dragon
#

I don't know all the random ass commands for fstab and shit

hushed raven
#

I think the first time I used it the script was an unofficial thing you had to put on the USB before booting

safe dragon
#

yeah

dusty pollen
#

at the time, iirc the arch community was actually very against install scripts

safe dragon
#

you basically just launch the arch live usb and run the archinstall command

#

that's generally how you do it these days

hushed raven
safe dragon
hushed raven
#

But I don't often listen to "purists" because ain't nothing of mine is pure

fleet wren
#

in some way I can see their point

#

despite the memes I don't use Arch btw

safe dragon
#

thankfully all the elitists then moved on to random shit like void linux or nixos or something

dusty pollen
#

I think it was around at the time but not very popular so I must not have run into it when I was installing

cinder karma
fleet wren
#

Nix is the "I use Arch btw" of 2025 😌

dusty pollen
#

personally I learned a lot from manual installation about how my system worked but not everyone wants to or needs to learn all that stuff

safe dragon
#

I did once install arch manually

dusty pollen
#

and I kept learning more just from maintaining it

safe dragon
#

I just followed a guide and had only a slight clue wtf was going on

hushed raven
#

I've been through the manual install process before, I wasn't the biggest fan, but it was also when I was very unfamiliar with a cli based OS

#

I recon I could do it again now a lot quicker

dusty pollen
#

tbh a lot of it was way too confusing. the install guide was just the jumping off point, but you were expected to follow every link and digest and understand every concept on your own

safe dragon
#

I think today I'd understand it a lot better

#

though I'd still have to google everything

#

does anyone just know fstab commands

#

maybe an IT guy I suppose

hushed raven
#

The day I learn fstab commands is the day I transcend the need for a computer

#

I do know how to edit the fstab file though, not a clue how to reload without googling

cinder karma
#

Learn everything again i think

#

You guys can tell, right....

hushed raven
#

Nooo not at all... /lh

safe dragon
#

nope

cinder karma
#

Atlas you dont count my dad introduced me to Linux before you were even born

dusty pollen
marble jewel
#

I learned Unix from Jurassic Park

dusty pollen
safe dragon
#

my dad has never used linux before hc_pensive

hushed raven
#

Jurassic Park really did not prepare me for what actual Unix systems actually look like

marble jewel
#

My favorite part of Unix is how files are 3d warehouses

safe dragon
#

a well known part of it

#

ext4 made it 4d

#

my mom spends several hours a day every day on a steam deck so I guess she uses linux

hushed raven
#

Technically the truth

ivory shadow
#

[laughs in android]

safe dragon
#

it's kinda like saying you use FreeBSD cause ur car uses it

dusty pollen
#

android is unix though, right? not technically linux iirc (genuinely asking lmao)

hushed raven
#

I use java BC my radio uses it, totally know the ins and outs of all the JVM

hushed raven
safe dragon
#

android uses the linux kernel but not the rest is how I vaguely remember it

ivory shadow
#

Android is Linux. Linux is a kernel not everything else.

fleet wren
#

Android is Linux

safe dragon
#

I don't think android uses the regular linux kernel either

marble jewel
#

I'm a physicist because I exist in the world and I'm made out of molecules

fleet wren
#

it's not GNU/Linux

crystal wren
#

It's GNUoogle/Linux.

ivory shadow
#

"regular Linux kernel" isn't a thing

safe dragon
dusty pollen
#

hmm, I thought it didn’t use the linux kernel, that’s why I asked SDVpuffersquee must have misremembered

fleet wren
#

(as much as I despise the meme I think GNU/Linux is usually what most people consider a typical Linux OS, and Android definitely falls outside of that umbrella)

crystal wren
#

Definitely, yeah.

hushed raven
#

Agreed

safe dragon
#

my world was shattered when I found out stalman never actually said the famous gnu/linux quote

hushed raven
#

iOS and MacOS are UNIX right? Which isn't Linux? They're based on FreeBSD?

marble jewel
#

Windows is Linux /s

crystal wren
#

Some BSD based I think, yeah.

safe dragon
#

windows is DOS

marble jewel
#

Linux is just a state of mind

ivory shadow
#

I wonder how much of Apple's stuff is based on open-source at this point

hushed raven
#

Not a lot I would assume?

fleet wren
#

user facing software, probably none to zero aside from WebKit

safe dragon
#

0% they will make it closed source when touched

hushed raven
#

I will however say almost certainly all of their stuff relies on open source stuff

lethal walrus
hushed raven
#

I had a feeling the PS was, but I wasn't certain in the slightest, nor was I certain which ones either

ivory shadow
#

Apple is too busy selling $300 phone bags to worry about open-source license compliance

hushed raven
#

It's the iPod sock all over again

safe dragon
#

250 dollar monitor stands

#

it's a fascinating company

devout vault
marble jewel
#

Apple sold a $300 literal book

hushed raven
#

Their business model certainly is businessing

fleet wren
#

fun fact, Linux is not UNIX (it never got certified). macOS is though

ivory shadow
marble jewel
ivory shadow
#

I lied it's $230 not $300 but yeah

safe dragon
#

idk how apple does it

hushed raven
# devout vault what

The iPod had a knitted "sock" to carry it and they also cost an arm and a leg when they came out I believe, it was literally just a sleave the size of a babies sock

devout vault
safe dragon
marble jewel
#

The book is meant to sit on your coffee table so that people know how much money you have to waste

ivory shadow
safe dragon
#

how did they make like half of the united states part of their cult smh

ivory shadow
#

They convinced people that having an iPhone is a status symbol way back when

hushed raven
fleet wren
ivory shadow
#

And then they made their shitty OS not work the same as any other OS among other things so people got vendor lockin'd

devout vault
#

why does discord look a little muddy on my side monitors

ivory shadow
#

Probably text subpixel rendering

safe dragon
#

make sure everyone for some reason uses your messaging app that literally does not work on any other phone and then somehow succeed in that (only in the US thought cause that didn't work anywhere else)

hushed raven
#

Someone mentioned text looked different earlier, possibly an update?

devout vault
safe dragon
#

that was me yes

devout vault
#

Text looks normal on main monitor

safe dragon
#

oh uh

devout vault
#

(the built in display)

safe dragon
#

I'm guessing cause it's an xwayland window

hushed raven
#

Oop😬

ivory shadow
#

Is it just text? Do non-text things look proper and crisp?

safe dragon
#

if it looks sharp in the browser version then I'm going with xwayland

devout vault
#

I'm not sure how to tell with not-text, but it's not just discord actually

#

The jetbrains toolbox does it too

safe dragon
#

does that side monitor use display scaling at all

ivory shadow
#

I still vote for trying messing with your font sub-pixel rendering in system settings.

devout vault
#

No, it's at 100%

devout vault
safe dragon
#

shouldn't be

#

hmmm 100%...

#

I'd try launching discord as a wayland window and see if that fixes it

devout vault
#

Oh yeah, and the discord application icon is invisible for some reason. So that's fun

safe dragon
#

not ideal

devout vault
#

Browser discord isn't muddy (but does have the color difference, not that that's surprising)

devout vault
marble jewel
#

You can also try Vesktop which comes with some Linux-friendlier tweaks

safe dragon
#

uh set the environment variable ELECTRON_OZONE_PLATFORM_HINT to wayland or auto and then relaunch discord in that state

ivory shadow
#

I would go so far as to say you really need Vesktop, because when I was running the native Discord app it wasn't detecting idle status properly.

#

So it was eating all my notifications

safe dragon
#

o

#

never had that issue

#

I use regular discord

marble jewel
#

Very friendlier

devout vault
#

Changing legacy application scaling from "apply scaling themselves" to "scaled by the system" fixed the muddiness.

#

(Even though it's at 100% scaling, yes)

safe dragon
#

🌈

devout vault
#

Oh but that can't be set per monitor

safe dragon
#

I await the day x11 just explodes and dies

#

basically every remaining display issue I run into is due to x11

devout vault
#

I'm a little spooked out by the idea of using an unofficial discord thing

#

Like I've never used Better Discord or whatever it is either

hushed raven
#

Do make sure you have a notification Daemon aswell (on arch this is), discord (and vesktop) has had issues where it just randomly crashed BC it can't find one

safe dragon
#

kde comes with one

hushed raven
#

Ahh you've kde nice choice

marble jewel
#

Vesktop is mostly vanilla until you start modding/theming it. AFAIK there are no known repercussions to simply using Vesktop.

lethal walrus
#

No repercussions for vencord entirely currently AFAIK

#

If they were banning people just for using vencord, you'd be hit for being on vesktop too

safe dragon
#

brb implementing malware in vesktop

marble jewel
#

Vesktop/Vencord are pretty much interchangeable

#

It's just one has you install Discord first

#

(I mean sure, Vesktop has some more built-in tweaks, but not substantially different)

devout vault
#

"why are discord notifications echoing"

#

devout vault
cinder karma
#

I see you're in the framework cult

ivory shadow
#

Yeah, we talked casey into it

cinder karma
#

Khloe! Are you an arch

ivory shadow
#

I have a server that's running arch, but my laptop is running Bazzite.

#

And I still have Windows on my main PC for annoying reasons

#

The Valve announcements today really derailed my thoughts, lol. I made absolutely no progress on the latest dumb project casey tricked me into

cinder karma
#

What are you making?

devout vault
cinder karma
#

(Tbh I have no clue what valve announced and I dont care to know)

ivory shadow
#

C# for the Java Virtual Machine. Or, rather, a C# like language because some language constructs are infeasible on the JVM, like: unsafe stuff and pointers, stackalloc, structs, and anything about generics that requires knowing types at runtime

cinder karma
#

So all the fun stuff

#

Smh.

devout vault
#

Smh structs and runtime type generics are sorta doable with enough nonsense

#

(Ie. What the thing I was trying to update does)

ivory shadow
#

structs are absolutely not "doable" lmao you just make a class and go "lalala see it's a struct I said so I promise"

cinder karma
#

So not a struct lol

devout vault
cinder karma
#

Casey, what if I want to pull out a memcpy

#

Oops

devout vault
ivory shadow
#

Also Java doesn't have separate types for unsigned int/long/etc. so that's a fun language distinction.

cinder karma
#

Oxidation seems fun

devout vault
#

Hissssssss

cinder karma
devout vault
#

(I have too - or at least the unsafe c# version)

#

(Well, the c++ version too, definitely, just not IN c#)

ivory shadow
#

Honestly, I could implement runtime types

cinder karma
#

I have no reason to use Java

devout vault
#

(Both of ours, I believe)

ivory shadow
cinder karma
#

You have rust as an option

devout vault
#

no

#

The only rust MC mod I’ve seen is also incredibly cursed.

cinder karma
#

Kotlin seems so much more comfy to use than Java

#

And you'll never take my stackallocs from me

cinder karma
#

I've never used arch.....I got peer pressured into Ubuntu

fleet wren
#

Bazzite's more interesting thing is it being immutable and snapshot based

cinder karma
#

What does that even mean like I

#

Also you cant sell me on anything I dont recognize 😛

ivory shadow
cinder karma
#

That sounds annoying

#

What is more fun than breaking your laptop 40 minutes before you have to give a presentation?

#

(But more seriously....it is a lot of stuff I dont need on a personal machine.)

#

Like, I barely use my personal machine as is

#

How bad is the nvidia instability problem

#

Like actually I'm thinking of writing my own spice engine but with gpu

devout vault
#

Apparently my windows updated

#

This is literally the opposite of what I want from notepad

#

I like notepad because it can do nothing but plain text

#

Apparently formatted documents have markdown mode, but like

#

It doesn't even actually italicize with the markdown format specifiers, so what's the point

#

(I assume that means the document is saved as markdown, though)

fleet wren
#

( this was going to be put in mmg but I figured it might be better here?)
I'm looking for some guidance on mod organisation, specifically with version control and Git, I would like to have all my mods in a single repo but each folder within the repo be under it's own separate version control, having them all under a single version control system seems very clunky and prone to my own miss management, I have looked into git worktree and git flow but they seem just as clunky and not exactly what I'm thinking of, I'm having no luck finding anything similar either. I don't really want to have separate repos for each mod as it would clog up my github and be an annoyance to find anything (if I could put repos in a folder I'd certainly go with that, even if it was just a github only thing), if anyone has any ideas or ways that could help solve this "issue" I'm having, it would be greatly appreciated

#

an example of the repo fil structure would be something like this:

Stardew Mods Repo
├── .git
├── mod1
│ ├── .git
│ └── manifest.json
└── mod3
    ├── .git
    └── manifest.json
#

this is pretty much because I use assets and code from various other of my mods (like a pick and place system at this point) so having access to them without opening 5 different code editors would be great

steel kraken
#

You have contradicting goals.
One repo and seperate version control are incompatible goals

hushed raven
#

Gotcha, that explains why I can't find anything that solves it then

steel kraken
#

You can have a repo reference other repos with submodules, but can be a pain in the ass and would need to continuously update the outer repo to point to the newer commits of each submodule

#

But that would still break your goal of clogging up your GitHub profile

hushed raven
#

to my understanding submodules are like symlinks (in a very simplified manner)? that's what it looks like from reading the git docs

steel kraken
#

Kinda, rather than the contents of the folder being defined inside the repo it's a pointer to a different repo instead

#

But the physical filesystem once fully cloned/pulled would mostly look like what you want, it's just a bitch to maintain

crystal wren
#

Instead of git submodules, just have an SVN/Mercurial repo for each individual mod on a different host instead. /j

hushed raven
#

it seems like ease of maintaining does not go with easy to navigate across repos

crystal wren
#

But yeah, I'm not sure there really is an elegant way around this. I considered submodules for mine, but it's just such a burden.

steel kraken
#

But in terms of polyrepo you can have a vscode workspace defined outside of version control that has the various mods repos open

hushed raven
#

then the issue of clogging up my github page comes back, I did think of that idea and have used it for a smaller group of repos, it's just not ideal either

crystal wren
#

I suppose you could have a separate account for just the individual mods?

steel kraken
#

There's a reason most of us gave up and just followed pathos's lead with monorepo

crystal wren
#

But then that's messy in a different way.

steel kraken
#

Monorepo where you just have some self control to keep commits contained to one mod at a time minimises most of the downside

hushed raven
#

I did also think of a separate account but that would be even more of a hassle to me than my original though XD

crystal wren
#

Branch protection at least really helps with that self control for me.

hushed raven
#

I think I'll have to toss together a salad of branch protection and general self control, I think a decent amount could be automated too, but I may just be over inflating the need for it

steel kraken
#

I personally don't care enough to go through the effort of branch protection (or precommit hooks) as I'll just get annoyed at past me trying to get in present me's way

#

In a codebase where other people are actually contributing, sure. And would turn branch protection on in all my work codebases where the expectation is everything is getting code review.
But for my solo personal repos, nah

hushed raven
#

If I didn't have to enter a pat whenever I clone or pull a repo I probably would have separate private ones then when a feature or bug is fixed, put it into the public repo, it's just so incredibly annoying finding the pat given I have to search through a password manager

steel kraken
#

Any sane git client shouldn't be requiring that

hushed raven
#

for private repos the git clone command needs them, it's such a pain

dusty pollen
#

why don’t you set up your stored auth?

#

you shouldn’t have to do it every time, there are ways to just stay authed on a certain machine

hushed raven

I had no idea stored auth was a thing, bare with, going to check it out

crystal wren
#

hushed raven
#

SSH keys is probably a better alternative for me, I didn't realise I could use them either, good to know! ty all for your help and ideas

I’ve contemplated that sort of thing before as well. Like, MMR on hit does exist, it’s just on a separate repo because I couldn’t figure something out. Which means I couldn’t use SpaceShared 😔

hushed raven
#

I wonder how generous Githubs definition of a machine account is (so far found not much) at this point however I'm tempted to just self host with as much automation as I can do, it would probably be a lot more customisable for sure

devout vault
#

Sub modules are just so annoying if you need to actually make changes in them continuously

#

Trying to get flameshot to show on all monitors correctly using KDE window rules. My monitors are like this, and it captures everything, but places the window on the main monitor. So the capture shows the left monitor on the main monitor (with a black margin above), and the middle monitor on the right monitor (with the bottom portion cut off), hence doing this.

However, KDE does not want to place the monitor in the black null zone

#

Which means the best I can do is something like this, at least that I've figured out so far

#

Or, to show more clearly

#

Becomes this on the capture screen

#

If I try to do a "null zone" position, it just goes back to main monitor default position

Will fix that later I guess

base - You probably have this
base-devel - Compilers and shit
btop - Terminal system display I really like
exfatprogs - If you want to partition stuff in exFAT or NTFS or whatever
firefox
git
gwenview - KDE's image viewer
imagemagick - Convert between image types, you might have it as a dependency
libreoffice-fresh - MS Office alternative
man-db and man-pages - Manuals
neovim - Please run sudo pacman -Rns emacs first
noto-fonts-cjk - Asian font support
okular - KDE PDF app
openssh - SSH support
pacman-contrib - I use it for the 'pactree' command, which shows a tree of dependencies for packages
partitionmanager - KDE disc utility
paru (or yay) - AUR helper
pipewire/pipewire-alsa - Audio support
reflector - Fetches and sorts the fastest Arch package mirrors
ttf-hack-nerd - My preferred font
unrar - un-.rar files
unzip - yep
uv - Python package management
wget - Download files from commandline
wine-staging - It's wine
wl-clipboard - Wayland clipboard support
zip - Why zip and unzip are separate idk

Stuff you might not want but I would recommend

atuin - Sync your terminal commands with other machines
bat - cat but better
fd - find but butter
fzf - fuzzy searcher, probably a dependency
qpwgraph - GUI to pipe audio sources into sinks
ripgrep - grep but better
zoxide - Like 'cd' but will jump based on your most used directories

# hushed raven Yep that made it work, weird? not entirely sure what caused that

Basically your local package database was out of sync with the mirrors arch mirror's update constantly and sometimes your system might thinks an old package version still exists

pacman -Syy forces pacman to throw away the old database and download a fresh one.

That’s why it fixed the 404 — the mirrors didn’t have the versions your system thought existed.
