#programmers-off-topic

I'm pretty sure my ultimate playthrough was just solo kirby
Glad he wasn't a late game one like some of the characters, or I never would've played through ultimate story mode
Also KAR2 has a unique-per-character ultimate move system just like modern smash
Also the plethora of gameplay options they've shown in the KAR2 direct, compared to smash stuff
Alright no more programming allowed
wait what
thank you DH or whichever junimo made such a magnanimous (and completely justified) decision

oh so this is what happened to programming off topic
What do you mean? This channel has always been about kirby air riders
I will see you all, my fellow air riders, in… like 4 hours I guess.
(Time to build up the sleep reservoir)
the most correct name for the channel, only 12 days left to wait
(also since when did the nintendo site turn into something that looks like argos, it's so bright!)
would be so excited for it if I had a switch 2
unfortunately I have spent my gaming budget of the rest of the year (and the start of 2026) into Lost in Cult Design Works bundles
I got a few top speed powerups it seems
as fun as you're hoping?
Oh they actually did rename it
Yeah, who knew atra's requests carried that much power?
“I did some power up collecting off camera”
damn new channel what dis
New people joining the server: "why does a SDV server have a KAR channel"
"wtf is a kirby air riders"
so uncultered, those people. smh
also a spider is hanging above me and now I can't focus
it's a spider no way am I swatting it away
what kind of spider? like the ones with legs as long as runway models or like the ones with an actually normal leg:body ratio
if it has legs for days they can get gone, I hate those, why do they need such long thin legs, if its the other one, Aww cute!
poor daddy longlegs
They are my least favorite, especially the ones that fly
smol one
aww the teeny tiny ones are cute, money spiders i think they're called in the UK?
I've never looked at one upclose so I just googled "money spider", all I can say is ew
wrong
Guessing you aren't a fan of them XD
Good morning Mozart!
a loud silence
Rofl, I was very confused at the channel's name. I didn't realize it the the programming channel
KAR
-# I'm in my mum car, Brum Brum
Why is this channel called Kirby air riders
the stardew valley developers have an unreasonable influence on the stardew valley discord
atra and casey what have you done
one may argue it's actually a kind of reasonable influence
Hey now. Atra asked for this, not me
the programmers have an unreasonable influence over the programming channel
to much dismay I have just noticed the tagline for the channel hasn't changed, totally should be "A place for off-topic KAR chatter (i.e. stuff related to Kirby)"
Hopefully one day we'll have access to switch 2 homebrew/emulation for modding. Then it can be programming
I love finding out when someone discovers a way to homebrewify nintendo consoles, it's always some of the oddest ways too
The switch method was certainly unique
is that the one that only works on the first gen switches? or is there another one thats unknown to me?
I think so, yeah
I think my fav one was the Wii letterbomb method, the software ones are the ones I find interesting, the hardware ones to me are less desirable due to having to physically modify the device
I mean you didn't have to modify the hardware for the first gen switch method
Stick a thingy in the joycon rail, maybe also hold a button? done
I got a little premade thingy
Red is for joycon, can’t recall what the bigger one is for since I thought it read from SD
Oh I was thinking of another first gen switch method, I was thinking of the ACE method "Fusée Gelée" (has to search the name for it bc theres no chance I can remember it"
Ohhh I didn't know that required touching contacts, I thought it was just software based only
But like, the point was that the joycon rail thing was that it would trigger some factory setting (hence why it couldn't be firmware patched) where an exploit was found
How do you think someone discovered that? my guess is either a leak from a worker or disassembling the console and dumping the boot file
It was disassembly fromm what I remember
Well
Sorta
Disassembly software side, yeah
Can't recall if the hardware side was an accident or if it was careful examination
Stick a thingy I the joycon rail to hold a mystery third button and rhenium hold the other Two with boring hands
Rhenium?? How did you get that from an attempt at then
Technically it can be kinda useless programming if you want
-# ↩ David Buchanan (@retr0.id)
here's a framebuffer graphics demo (this has no practical purpose and I can't prove I'm not just like, playing a youtube video or something)
270
1285
Insert something about the frogs kitkats turning the kids gay into arch users
that's how it went for me
kitkat to arch pipeline is real, it can hurt you
it will hurt you
it also has a very peticular set of skills
Is kar out yet
First demo period was earlier today, next will be later today
Some more tomorrow, then the same schedule next weekend
Then release on the 20th
OSRS still get's new things? wow
oh yeah osrs has like 200k concurrent players
they released a new continent this year
and now the sailing skill with essentially the entire ocean becoming traversable
oh shit thats really cool, I may have to pick it up again, I thought it only got bug fixes dispite the very extensive player base
wonder if I can play PoE and OSRS at the same time, they're both very time consuming games I wanna play
oh yeah no I play both of those but never simultaneously
that's like having 2 full time jobs next to my actual job
it really is, isn't osrs one of the few games that actually allows bots or am I miss rememebring that?
that was originally the plan when they announced osrs but then people just kept playing and more kept playing and the dev team they put on it kept growing
even just the osrs rerelease is 12 years old at this point
the first few years players were still very protective of keeping things the same at fear of it going in the wrong direction like RS3 did but eventually that shifted and they gained more trust and we actually started getting proper updates
rs3 might hopefully shed some of its worst aspects soon as they've now committed to completely removing the lootbox system and most of the pay to win shop items
I like lootboxes if they use ingame currency that can't be bought with actual money, pay to win however I hate with every inch of my soul, I'd gladly pay for a game but never pay to win
everquest 2 has gone in the opposite direction
oh that was just a gambling system, you did get free rolls but in the same way gacha give you free ways to obtain them to bait you into the gambling system
If you do the top tier of the next expansion preorder, you get a teleporter for your house that takes you to any of the new expansion's dungeons! (The tier is $250)
(The only other things that tier gives is tradeable real money stuff, essentially)
it's kinda necessary because at this point for rs3 to get rid of much of its MTX cause rs3 gets only like 1/10th the players of osrs and it just keeps decreasing. Their predatory monetisation model might have earned them a lot more money at first but if it eventually just kills the game...
(Tradeable versions of: redeemable standard version of the expansion, character level boost, character slot, exp potions, legendary mount, legendary mercenary, character level boost but for crafting)
basically the "pay to win mmo" starter pack
Oh this is just evil. An 88 slot bag for the $130 tier
(For reference, the largest craftable backpack is 64 slots)
Back when I was playing the biggest bag you could get was 66 slots, and you could only get it from the guide events I think
(guide = "official" volunteers that help people, and have tools to do custom in game events sometimes)
that definitely feels like a "try and get as much money out of this burning ship" situation
Well, it's been getting worse for years
yeah that's how it goes
Stat inflation (both numbers, and amount of types of stats (because they keep adding new stats to try and patch the stat inflation problems) )
Economy is laughable
They basically have official real money plat trading, since they have an item you can buy that's tradable and also redeemable for a month of access
rs3 really was the same but a combination of their other game (osrs) doing so much better now and some looming EU legislation on virtual currencies has seemingly given them enough reason to try and turn things around
(Yeah this game has a monthly subscription too. I think there's free to play too, but it's pretty limited)
By "pretty limited", I mean stuff like:
- can't upgrade your spells all the way
- can't freely use the auction house equivalent
- can't freely use the mailbox
- can't freely use guilds
etc.
"Ability to use certain equipment groups ", didn't know about that one
It's ridiculous.
My take away is everquest is still alive?
(And it's not nearly as limited as when it came out)
Yes, though this is everquest 2
I think everquest next or whatever 3 was gonna be called got canceled years ago
It feels like one of those "history of computer games" titles
I mean, yeah
Next to ultima online
EQ1's popularity predates WOW I think
oh god, you can "level up your membership with new additional perks" nowadays
both versions of runescape have bonds which are absolutely pay to win in a sense but one people have just kinda accepted. Essentially you can buy "bonds" with real money which can be turned in for either membership or sold to another player in-game for gp. This means you can essentially buy gold but there's at least the flip side that people with enough gp to spare can sustain membership purely by buying bonds from the auction house without using real money at all
bonds + membership are essentially the only monetization method for osrs barring like... merch
meanwhile rs3 has like 3 gazillion monetization systems
they've done it all
Yeah, that's how it the kronos on eq2 work.
But somehow it enabled laundering money between servers (including the "classic style" servers), somehow. OR so I've heard
(laundering in game money)
even a battle pass system which was hated so extremely that they removed it almost immediately
(which meant even new servers could not escape the currency inflation)
EQ2 has a lot of stuff in the in game shop too
Like, mercenaries (hired party member NPCs, basically) have a lootbox variant with different tiers (of course)
Special designed houses that you can't get any other way
Tons of cosmetic stuff
Tons of not cosmetic stuff (exp potions, an insta-revive if you're alone, etc.)
osrs is a rather bizarre case study as far as succesful games go
(The insta-revive really irked me when it was added because the class I played had a unique ability that did exactly that. It wasn't limited to solo, though)
(And later they also added a version that any healer could access, not just druid subclasses)
(But that also meant I had like 2-3 different abilities that did that by the time I stopped playing)
Wow, they removed deity abilities? I know they didn't do much but man, those were fun
Oh that might be different than the niche feature nobody used that I'm thinking of
Where you picked one to worship and gave offerings and got abilities based on your favor
Average max level health was over 1 billion at minimum though (As of early 2024 it seems)
Of a player, enemies had much more
I see a post from 5 years ago that says "Damage is by the trillions before luclin ends and the devs claims there are no issues" (luclin being an expansion I think)
Also, an item from around that time. Some of these things I haven't seen either
I did like how number crunchy EQ2 could be, to be honest. I like all the numbers I can make big.
But I'm not sure such high numbers of HP are good
...and keep in mind every time you inflict/receive/heal damage, a floating number pops up in world (unless you turn it off)
It might do that for other people's stuff around you, too
Kronos sell for like 50 billion plat as of early this year it seems (depending ont he server)
When my family played early on, even 2-3 plat was hard to get
They also capped how high items could be priced on the broker, so you had to do trading instead a lot of the time, I think
Also the expansions these days are much much smaller, with them used to having entire continents, but now only having like one or two overworld zones
Anyways, I'm done with the "my childhood MMO I have fond memories of playing with my entire family has become bleh" rant
hello
checks notes
air riders
who understand physical dimension diagram sheets
I have no idea what the 9-1.2 etc means in this
sounds and looks spooky
⌀ usually means diameter, but geez, this whole thing is a mess
I think that's the 16, the diameter of the pins from the center
idk what the 9 is, I thought perhaps pin diameter, but 9mm is huge
oh
unless it's all 9 pins are 1.2mm...
that might be it
hmmmm do we have Casey to thank for the new channel name?
We have Sakurai to thank for this channel name
But he didn't make the change...I'm curious who did
you donno, he might have
Atra asked a junimo too
but one of the deviant ones
I assume this one
#programmers-off-topic message
9mm apart. Diameter 1.2 (+/- 0.1) is what i got
I think the weirdest part for me is the diameter of 16 seemingly not being either the major or minor diameter but instead the diameter that touches the outside of that centre hole/pin
other than that, I assume 9 pins with diameter 1.2mm lower tolerance -0.0mm and upper tolerance +0.1mm, arranged one along the minor axis 2.65mm from the centre and the other 8 at even 45degree intervals starting at 22.5degrees from the major (or minor) axis
but if that’s meant to be an ellipse we’re missing data to actually know how large it is, we need at least one other known diameter
The 2,65?
yeah, the one that’s 2.65 from the centre
I think the weirdest part for me is the diameter of 16 seemingly not being either the major or minor diameter but instead the diameter that touches the outside of that centre hole/pin
The pins are actually around the circumference of the device, there's no material that extends further
There are nine pins in total, I think it's referring to that
the eight on the outer edge, then the one in the middle off center
no I mean that the 16mm diameter isn’t horizontal or vertical, it’s defined as bordering the inner pin
yeah
is it a circle or an ellipse?
What is this anyways
circular
Your new top hat?
then yeah np
It doesn't have a schematic file so I have to define one myself
No footprint?
Nope, none that I could find anywhere
it should be 9 holes, each with diameter 1.2mm (tolerance up to 1.3mm, no less than 1.2mm)
I assume it's a typo and it should be 8 instead of 9
(these are standard engineering formats for the most part)
yeah, i suppose the off-center one is being included
that's...kind of bad practice, but i guess if it works it works
the footprint file wasn't as hard to make as I thought, assuming I did it correctly
I haven't done schematic stuff in years
the 16mm is the circle that the holes lie on, very standard
Although I definitely labeled the pins wrong, I didn't notice they're actually numbered on the device itself, I'll have to fix that
not sure what the major/minor diameter means here, but the 16mm is the diameter of the circle the pins lie on (drawn in red). it looks oval only because everything is super distorted in the pic
everything in the drawing indicates to me it got compressed sideways somehow
(i actually didn't even realize that was causing confusion because I'm used to nonsense like this on poorly compressed images of drawings)
Hey, i tbihght the 9 was the diameter because there were clearly 8 screws lol
In the future buy your shit from digikey and download the provided footprint
All the other stuff I got from digikey for this project, but if they had something like this I couldn't find it
I've bought stuff from adafruit in the past and like it, I only now learned that they offer no footprint or schematic files for anything
digikey i feel is somewhat inconsistent in the documentation
they do usually have something from the manufacturer but sometimes it's not much
All of it is apparently just handled via a third party site it seems
digikey does admittedly usually have eveything so I'm a little surprised
but it's kind of fussy to search
noooo the name :(
I was excited to find a part that met what I wanted that I didn't think to really search elsewhere, they probably have something that could've served the same functionality
I thought it was an ellipse, turns out it's a circle that's been squashed
ellipses have a major diameter and a minor diameter
wow kar2 is canceled
how dare you
Even all the junimos together don't have that much power
It is... inevitable
of course if you told me it was inevitable a year ago I'd think you're insane
Back to progamming
I'm debating trying out crystal for AoC...
I keep forgetting to ask, what is AoC? is it the Advent of Code?
yep
I've been looking for something like this for a while, I shall defo do it this year (and probably do the previous ones too), great way to improve with C++ and C# while learning
yeah, Nim is the python-like one, crystal is modeled after ruby
wow, didn't even get a change for the scam images to load
Hello World, i can't remember what a tool for access c# private field & method & class
anybody know that?
You mean… reflection API?
not yet
i can't remember them, it likely Fody? im not sure
InternalsVisibleToAttribute?
Publicizer?
ah the the cursed tools
Maybe I won't use crystal, how are their tools even worse than Nim's
Oh I'm certainly intregued by it now XD
There's no treesitter config at all in the neovim repositories, and I couldn't get their LSP to load
I could try ruby I guess
It's the same syntax more or less, why not
maybe my challenge for AoC this year would be to do it with neovim
I have it setup since spring but barely used it
I should also do C++, but I'd have to lookup how to compile it properly again
I've been tempted to try neovim but honestly I've been a tad scared of it, it looks so simple yet so complicated at the same time
I'll be using helix but I also use that at work so not a challenge
no idea what language yet tho
tooling is often what makes me end up deciding against a language
if I try to use the language and there's no autocomplete or the results make very little sense I'm just kinda done with it
or often ther lsp just doesn't report either any errors or almost none
Lol
that lol to me feels loaded with "you wouldn't like verilog"
Lol
that one's loaded with pain
I haven't tried Zig yet, I'm hoping it has a good LSP experience
Lol
Mayhe I should do something stupid
I really wanna try do AoC with some of the meme languages, thinking either brainfuck or the image one, the real question is how much do I hate myself?
Lol
I'd definitely not do all days of AoC with one of those...
but I've done it for day 1
with uiua
which doesn't consider itself a meme language but I do
Babe, just be hardcore
😛
(I kid I kid I'm between zig and ocaml)
Or what about Haskell...
oh good lord what on earth is that language, I hate it, I have no idea how I'd even begin to write it
I feel like I want to use aoc to explore a language i dont get to hse in my day to day
Haskell is a new one to me, might be worth a challenge
But isnt some obscure mess I have no reason to learn
That's what I'm using it for, using Python, Lua, or JS just feels like a wasted opportunity to me
haskell wasn't new to me, I'd built a compiler in it before for uni
that definitely helped
I looked at Zig, then I looked at Zig's string handling and decided against it
uh oh
is it a curse of systems programming languages
string handling
oh... zig doesn't have a string type
it's just a byte array
that is a great way to break everything the moment you deal with multibyte characters
Like AoC requires you to ever deal with multibyte
I saw something about manually allocating memory and decided to bounce
it do be a manual memory management language
it doesn't but that doesn't mean I like it...
Should I try doing AoC this year, I haven’t in a while, I think
The real flex is to use November to make a programming language, then use that language for AoC
Clearly, I should do AoC in SDV 1.7 alpha trigger actions
I think I read it still starts on the 1st but its every other day
unless I totally mis read which is likely
I thought it’s as normal every day, just ends early
What is the world coming to
the leaderboard is also being removed
yeah it just ends early I believe
because it was kinda pointless
bye leaderboard
At least with generative AI nowadays, I sssume?
What about private leaderboards, will those still exist?
they will
programming-off-topic leader board anyone?
Sounds to me like another entry under “yet another thing LLMs have ruined”
What time does AoC release again?
simply due to timezone reasons I don't tend to do well on leaderboards...
Oh is it not program completion time? or like least "words"?
europe has one of the best timezones what do you mean
I mean they can’t verify program time
good point
No it's literally from the minute it releases
This isn’t the ICPC
Ahhh I see why the leaderboard didn't have much of a use then
the puzzles always come out literally as I'm lying down to go to bed, so I don't get to them until like 7 hours
Casey programming language when
“Advent of code, but it measures runtime from compiled to WASM” when
if I was someone who jumped out of bed at 6 am to excitedly do advent of code before work... maybe
When she can figure out when she would want one to look like
(And can focus on a single thing long enough for that to happen)
in reality I don't end up doing AoC days till I get home some time after dinner
I can barely get myself out of bed for work I ain't getting up even earlier for AoC
the ideal timezone for AoC is the eastern timezones
Lol
if I even attempted to do it quickly I'd get so frustrated for sure, no way I'd do it first thing when I wake up, people like that are scary
I mean, I have no hope of leaderboard
I'm not going to stay up for it
Anyways
Zig seems super fun
Go too
If I had an 🍎 I would consider Swift
Aquo you should do n64 assembly
Go has taken my fancy more and more, that's another one I might try and learn to use for AoC
Isn’t that how it is with all programming languages
(Except <insert the reader’s favorite>, of course)
other than rust yes
How about one of you do AoC with this.
if I had a switch I might've done it
the clash between me wanting a language that tries niche new things and wanting a language with very well made mature tooling
do it on scratch!
🦀
🦀 overtakes all
Do i look like the type of person who actually owns anything from nintendo
Lol
I'm kind of intrigued by the "parallel programming" languages, as in languages where you "just" write your program and the compiler figures out how to run your algorithm in parallel
what if I do AoC in Futhark
A high-performance and high-level purely functional data-parallel array programming language that can execute on the GPU and CPU.
The Futhark compiler generates code that can be easily integrated with non-Futhark code.
Very interested in this point for sure
That’s too powerful. Haven’t you see scratch discount OS and scratch discount Minecraft?
What about Julia
I’ve heard this is sort of one of the goals for Verse (something Epic Games is/was trying to do for Fortnite user generated content, and in theory was gonna be part of unreal engine eventually too, I think. Haven’t heard about it in a while though)
I tried Julia many years ago and it's interesting but the language just felt very... not intended for me
I don't want your fuckin repl
give me a compiler
I definitely have heard Julia be talked about in this channel before
I wanna write programs
the only repl I use is python's to act as a calculator cause I haven't installed a calculator program on this pc
I understand repls are very useful to people in data science but that's not me
repls are nice for testing small things imo, I am not a fan of them for anything more than just a couple lines, they feel too clunky for my liking, whether that's just due to lack of experience with them or not idk
might legit do it in Futhark
You should do it in x86
although I expect there is no lsp
futhark is the worst language for doing it in x86... it tries to compile to the gpu
Hello, i have question
why this game we use Save Serializer with XmlSerializer, not binary or json or other framework?
i know we can't move XmlSerializer to another framework because it very big task
But in terms of feasibility, which frameworks could be used as a replacement for XmlSerializer and are faster?
*ai translator
I assume this is about stardew valley modding in which case you should ask in #making-mods-general
Me: Hmmm is Ruby too old fashioned of a language to use
Crumble: I'm going to use elder runes this year, although I can only compile it while under the full moon
thankfully, unlike uiua, futhark is actually written in regular alphanumeric characters and not the actual futhark script
disappointing
there is no lsp whatsoever for futhark as far as I can tell
exciting
at least it can't freeze my pc like Odin's did then
AoC Day 0: Create the LSP for the language you're using
Nim's LSP would continue to run after neovim closed, somehow, and I always had to remember to kill it
honestly I'd probably try Nim if I didn't know you already used it a few times for AoC. Now it's not weird or niche enough
that’s probably scratch 2. I’m saying do it in scratch 1.
I wonder if now that I have a little more cs knowledge than when I was 14 (though is it by much? who’s to say) I could actually implement a proper quicksort in scratch 1
so glad I learnt how to implement quick sort in uni. I've had to do that at least once every day since
very useful
h-have you?
absolutely!
my whole work day is just writing sorting algorithms and inverting binary trees
futhark was written in haskell
honestly instead of furthak I might just be a coward and try out rust-gpu instead
aka just write rust code but have it compile to the gpu
not as fun tho
Ooh!
didn't I make a very similar joke earlier saying to use november for making the programming language you'll use for AoC
I didn't even have to check the list to know it was atra who did the 👀 react here
Sharing this here too because it's too funny looking
"sub-freezing temperatures are expected"
Ah, these temperatures must be in kelvin. I should've known.
😔
(But also, why are you apologizing. It's fine. as long as you're okay with getting sprayed by my crab repellant)
(the crab repellant doesn't seem to be working very well)
Nah, it's a chemical that keeps things from rusting
Obviously
And yet everything is still rusting over 😔
I must've been scammed and given this instead
clearly you must eat the crabs, not merely repel them
never
When am I invited over for pho
does garlic butter not keep things from rusting
i must've been scammed. and my house so fragrant
I downloaded the demo and wow I hate how this game "teaches"
you can't experiment, and by that I mean you can't so much as pick the exact position or colour of your objects. it's literally just "set this up exactly with these parameters. now set that other thing exactly with those parameters."
AOC was 4pm for me it was pretty great
The concept seemed great, but the little I saw of it made it seem much too simple
(For my interests, anyways)
and it's a way too high level of abstraction - you tie a button to "jump" and it immediately enables a jump with gravity deceleration and wall bounce
I think that could be fine, if you had some way of deconstructing it to see what makes it happen, and customize it
and I don't think the concepts it teaches are even that transferable, even to other educational nocode platforms!
Huh, really? (Like I said, never actually tried it)
you do not in the place in the lessons I am right now
Didn't mean to imply you could. Just meant that I could see that being useful... in a different program's hands
yeah, it's weird. I just hate badly implemented educational stuff tbh
oh yeah I was just clarifying since you never played it haha
I wouldn't expect that from nintendo, that's for sure
Yeah, people could be interested in something, try a bad learning tool, and be turned off from learning it from that experience
it's very paint by numbers, basically. a visual novel with a learn to program story theme
god I also hate this design decision
for some reason, the canvas the nodes are on also represents the physical space of the level. so you position things on it according to where they need to be at the start of the level... but then you have to also put all the behaviour stuff on it?
and you have to scale physical things according to their actual scale
which all means you can't position things based on where it's logical to put them for their connectors...
Should I move to Australia
why did attempting to share a video just crash my switch...
It's the new feature to make you upgrade to a switch 2!
just so we're clear, you cannot press any button except the highlighted one and you cannot progress unless you snap the object to the blue frame
Everyone knows you have to stick rigidly to the game design document
No deviation allowed from the initial draft
unless it's to add more monetization strategies
You say that as if they wouldn't have baked monetization into the entire game's design
you say that as if the monetisation isn't the design itself
modern games are just monetisation strategies with particle effects
Sure but keep in mind it'll also be summer
no it's for when some other company figured out some new manipulative method of making more money so you retrofit it into all your ongoing projects
no one had done it yet when the design document was made
you need to adapt
Ah
I mean, that's post-release, so it doesn't count
(I know that was a funny joke, pretending these games are done on release /s)
it could be pre release
before release, just late during development...
three years of development hell
the devs think they're done and then a higher up says it needs to be live service
but it was a puzzle platformer
so grateful when battlefield 6 launched and it was just a game
and then 2 weeks later it's now battlefield six Season 1 with an ingame store and battle pass and currencies and daily challenges and weekly xp and battle royale
"how long will it take to make it a battle royale? a month?"
"sir it's a single player non action cozy game"
"two months?"
Metroid prime 3 was released before gta 5 was even announced.
But GTA 6 but delayed again, so I guess it balances out unless metroid prime 4 gets delayed too
Oh, that's easy. Make a random level generator, but don't publish it - instead, use it for your dripfeed of live service levels
tbh we're all being delusional. now they're just going to ask chatgpt to make it a battle royale and then blame the devs when it breaks
actually u gotta use claude code not chatgpt
we're all being delusional
You say that as if that isn't my default state of mind
"that's easy" says the person who knows first hand that even small non competitive multiplayer isn't easy
i can't believe you're not using copilot to assist you while cursor generates your battle royale mode
Only partially correct.
How many AAA games are made by one person? Sure, AI codegen is like a 100x engineer, but that's not enough.
Use multiple LLMs - one per department
I responded to Crumble not you 😛
I'm aware
all game dev is easy
I just find the idea of server maintenance being easy funny
However, that's easy too.
The multiplayer has solo matchmaking only, not playing with friends. (Secretly, it's using LLM hallucinations to its advantage by hallucinating the other players)
I looked at w4 games's cloud service recently out of curiousity to see if they had a cheap plan for casey shenanigans, but the only pricing for that is "contact us", so I'm going to assume not
it works by sending an llm query asking "what's the other player doing right now? format it as this json"
the server costs are astronomical and lag is off the roof but hey they saved on dev salaries
also, to be fair, it is easy if you don't care about silly things like latency or cheat prevention
just like multithreading is easy if you don't care about silly things like race conditions
dreamworld who
you should look that up if you aren't familiar
it was a whole thing. the initial promise was multiplayer that could support a million players on one server
The AI company made a deal with them for cheaper prices. It still costs a lot, but they're getting tax cuts for "innovation" so who cares about the environment or whatever. It'll boost both company stock prices thanks to marketing buzzwords groundbreaking AI innovation

(the second result is an mmo, which I assume is the one you meant)
truly i expect that we can provide our shareholders an ambient and multimodal experience
eventually they get sued because for some reason the ai response is statistically likely to make the other player draw hate symbols with their movements
I thought you meant dreamworld for a second
And was like "wait did they actually do AI player hallucination?"
(apparently it's now halfway decent, but in the early days it was... not. their initial implementation of this magic server was a peer to peer system with no server side validation and which allowed arbitrary player-loaded textures to be synced to other players)
I 'member dreamworld
Oh that sounds fun
oh, player loaded models, not textures
I mean that game was intended to be a scam from the start, the rest was just making enough mmo to not be sued and lose
At first glance, Dreamworld sounds like the VR MMO that like 80% of the VR MMO webtoon series I'm following has.
So, in other words, fiction
apparently even their detractors are kind of okay with the current state of the game? which is shocking
dreamworld the theme park is also halfway decent
god the Dreamworld mmo website is such a "this was only designed for mobile devices" site
The steam screenshots are hilarious
that's most websites 🙂↕️
I don't think that's how you swing a pickaxe
it is if you're not lame
And what is with this lighting? It looks like someone's first graphics rendering project.
Like, almost-daytime ambient light, but also the lamps are actually doing something????
There are, like, 2-3 biomes here?????
If you're gonna advertise that feature, show a huge overarching view with a couple dozen
Or a collage or something
"hey guys I just started trying to implement terrain modification, look at this hole I made!"
Honestly, this whole thing looks like it'd meant to showcase the feature's of an asset store plugin
oh right. the swing animation is a default sword swing animation they either bought or stole from the unreal asset store
Not a final polished product
Ah. That explains... what I just said
it kind of is
It's "making features to fill a marketing checklist"
almost everything is an asset flip and allegedly all the assets are stolen
I found a wasp nest
Probably a better quality than this game to be honest
it's not even marketing. Just making enough game to not be sued
A procedural sandbox world sounds like how Everquest Next was supposed to be
drip feed stuff claiming you're doing something
oh yeah we forgot the part where it was crowdfunded casey
landmark?
I actually tried Landmark I think
...that sounds familiar, so maybe?
and billed as "the last game you'll ever play" and all that
Wait did they actually let people play it? I thought it never got further than super closed early versions
The original purpose for EverQuest Next Landmark was mainly as a player content creation tool for EverQuest Next.
everquest next? no
the sandbox? yeah
"the last game I'll ever play" because this game was so bad that it's mere existence shattered the idea of games could be fun for me
Landmark was a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed and published by Daybreak Game Company (originally Sony Online Entertainment) for Microsoft Windows. The game's original name was EverQuest Next Landmark, but was switched to Landmark in March 2014. The original purpose for EverQuest Next Landmark was mainly as a player cont...
Ah, okay. That sounds more like what I heard, then
it actually released
Oh, huh
and then shut down
Dreamworld's "all players, one server" GIF has less players than a hypixel lobby. One from before they even broke 10k players on at once
"TEXT-TO-3D OBJECT CREATION"
<gif of creating a painting of abraham lincoln>
...does america exist in this sandbox world?
(I get that's not the point, it's just funny)
lincoln is a founding father of the dream world
Was lincoln the first ever person to have a dream
no that's martin luther king at the lincoln memorial
Ah
Hmm
Dang, the bible lied to me.
Could've sworn it said something about people having had dreams in there
i remember playing lord of the rings online
it was pretty good for free but ultimately i was too frighten of socializing
me playin runescape rn on my other monitor
wow it's still alive
osrs reached peak player counts recently ye
new skill release on the 19th, first one since osrs started
no i mean, lord of the rings online is still alive
wha
sailing is coming (after being a meme for 20 years) and the oceans are now alive with content
I'm pretty excited
smh don't discredit sailors
tbh sailing is actually only like a 1/3 of the update, all the other content being added at the same time to make the oceans not be empty is really what makes the update so massive.
That and sailing as a skill is already more feature rich than half the other skills
yeah sailing is neat but just the entire ocean now being full of things and a ton of new places is the main attraction for me
the new fishing, farming, herblore and cooking is exciting
and the new boss pet affectionally called scrungly by the dev team (Gull)
can u fish on a boat
Part of me wants to say "most of the ocean (surface) IRL is empty if you ignore pollution"
Just like space
there is deep sea trawling I think is what the sail fishing is called
But that's not a good argument when it comes to video games, I know
yeah there's deep sea trawling
also some new coastline fishing thing
wow
lantern fishing yeah
when did they add outlines
that's art not rendered
this is artist impressions, not ingame graphics
presumably made by gentletractor
Part of me wants to make a post-apocalyptic game that takes place in a single (large) city filled to the brim with content, but is a wasteland outside of it. Which you can go to and explore very far if you want, but there's literally nothing there, and literally every person and book and such in game will tell you.
Just because I'm curious how many people would complain about the post-apocalyptic wastelands that everything ingame tells you is empty is, in fact, empty
well i think waste lands r more cool than city usually
Oh, by wastelands, I don't mean in a cool sense
It's an endless expanse of brown flatness
Literally, nothing except very slight changes in elevation
i think cyberpunk (ttg) do say the outside of city is empty wasteland and thats probably why u dont rly go there
And after reaching a threshold of complaints, add a single blade of grass somewhere far in the distance
But I want to let people go there, but make it very clear there's no reason to.
And see how many people complain when they do so and there's no reason to
So.. you want your first mods to be adding things to the wastelands?

Well, SDV modding does have a problem in that there's nowhere to put new modded places you want to add....
Smh no one has taken this one random tile in thr saloon yet
i feel like there was a game where if you go out of bounds
the game starts looping the environment
and once u turn around u didnt move much at all
there's also case like subnautica where there's a big ol nothingness full of wurms out of bounds
Making it kill you just means someone will mod in a way to survive
And then to kill what's killing you
Was it super Mario
And then supress what's killing you from even approaching you
i mean ppl build houses out of bounds in subnautica
And then form a civilization in the death zone

Is this from the parallel dimensions guy
Oh, yes it is
Oh, it's a nine year old video, might've been the one I saw before
How is KAR
ourdated..
How do video game demos work anyways
Demo for the weekend is over
How do demos become...over....
Strip out most of the content but leave in some of the core stuff
Sleepy
did u see the invisible walls one too atra
In theory, anyways
that was cool too
It was!
some devs just make in inaccessible, but then people use a mod to access the full content
I did see invisible walls
I know way too much about a game I've never played and never wkll play
idk if any mod uses it
but skyrim has low lod terrain for cyrodill iirc
What's skyrim
he upsets me
his name is a dutch word but he's not dutch and insists on a different pronunciation than it should have
I also think he's incredible and love his stuff
what does it mean in dutch
pancake
It's a synonym for the horizon (/s)
Did he know it was a dutch word before he picked it?
I could totally believe someone could make a nonsense name/word and it turn out to be an actual word in a language they don't know
I'm imagining like a formal meeting with 3 wasps
New quote added by kittycatcasey as #6733 (https://discordapp.com/channels/137344473976799233/1215712021207720006/1437217219040776192)
There was a book i loved as a kid that had those pancakes in it
I'm imagining it like you saw one on a walk and you stopped and said hi and gave it attention
playing skyrim is mostly touching snow and 45 degree cliffs with horse
Like when someone says they met three cats on a walk
In hindsight I don't know why my parents let me read that book
fairly certain he knew yes
I have never used a horse in skyrim
And I have 245 hours between oldrim, special edition, and VR
(VR is only like 5 hours)
I've also never completed the main story questline, as is tradition
how uninteresting is this main story for no one to bother finishing it
The major themes were adultery and euthanasia
It's not that it's uninteresting
It's the "gotta do all the side content first"
Like how when you explore a dungeon and go too far in one direction, you backtrack and go the other routes first
To make sure you don't miss anything
wow but i love hors
I still don't know what Skyrim is
game
but to be honest I don't think many people play skyrim for the story
I've also never completed any of the DLC questlines
horses are important in skyrim because they can climb an 89degree incline hill
- Got like halfway through dawnguard once
- Never went to solstheim or whatever it is
- never built a house
nordic horses r built different
I never really enjoyed skyrim. I tried it cause my sister bought it but much like her I couldn't get into it at all
The past few times I played, I probably spent more time picking mods than playing, as is tradition
i like skyrim generally but i think it's too scatterbrained story wise even for this kinda game
but i do have a vague outline in my head for what my dragonborn did
which is become elder scroll yog sothoth's henchmen
I’m also not sure I’ve done many of the base game questlines either
I did the thieves guild, never got far in the magic college or dark brotherhood or the companions
what do u do in the game then
Good question
just faff about ?
Probably
Many iterations of “set up fun mods, play for like 5-10 hours, get distracted by another shiny game”
Okay apparently I did build a house
But it was so long ago I don’t remember it
i have like 500 hours in skyrim and i've never gotten farther in the main questline than the attack on windhelm
it took me 400 hours to even go to the top of the mountain to see the guys (gray wardens?)
in most games i usually rush main quest until it feels like all the core systems are unlocked
then i faff about
A few plsythroughs ago I actually did some of the graybeard stuff beyond meeting them
And was baffled by there being shout stuff I missed out on before
did they have stuff
i thought they just sent u on word wall hunts
Also what the heck how did I qualify for fancy role color
yappin
I only ever talk here and nowadays sometimes in making mods general
Surely there are people more qualified
But there’s orange
pro yapper
That too
But assuming it wasn’t a mod, there was something involving a meditation where you needed to last as long as possible without dying (while not seeing your healthbar)
i feel like thats a mod
no idea tho hrm
This unlocked shouts if I remember right
But it could be
I don't remember how many playthroughs ago it was, but it wasn't recent
If it was before I started using wabbajack rather than making modlists myself, then probably not. Since I didn't recall installing any greybeard focused mods
...or shout focused mods
Only shout mods I can think of having installed myself are ones that let you turn shouts into perk points
(Coupled with a mod that makes dragons spawn more often, of course)
I installed a skyrim VR modpack recently to try, but never actually started playing
I made a character and was learning controls in the cell of whatever alternate start mod was being used
But never actually started playing
suddenly wants to play skyrim...
replace all thoughts with KAR
amusing that if you go by the server roles, 'talks too much' is more important than 'helped make stardew valley'
see in my mind i spend too much time here, but looking at the leaderboard i'm barely even in the top 100 for the whole month
I only live in the modding channels (and my semi secret threads) so getting the high ranks is near impossible
will eventually get local legend role maybe but might take another 6 years if past predicts the future
...same here?
But I've also been here since the stone age, so
I mean, those are all within the past month or two
I was on the alltime leaderboard before the past month or two 😛
ah true, i mostly meant for the shiny temp role
which is also only from the last month or two 🙂↕️
oh I'm somehow #18 for weekly leaderboard wow
but that might be due to it resetting like 30min ago
yeah it reset 30min ago, only 33 people are even in the leaderboard with presumably a minimum 10xp cutoff
imo the fact that we already have 3 leaderboards is bewildering lol
There used to be an entirely different leaderboard
The badges leaderboard
Pepperridge farm remembers
i was confused what the hell y'all were talking about till I switched to mobile and Casey's name color actually updated
utterly wildered
badges may have been the most useless feature in known history
finally. i have unlocked Lewis B. my life can go on
how could it be useless if it triggers the dopamine factories in my brain that respond to collecting things that are part of a set

How can u view leader board
(unrelated)
Me: "how hard could updating this be"
Me, checking the filesize of Implementation.cs since it took a minute to open: "oh" (23.5 MB)
Me, after it finally opened in VSCode and seeing the line count: "oh" (560k lines. yes, k, as in thousands)
I hope to yoba that this person autogenerated most of this
0.o
The "how hard could updating this be" was me wondering why the old skyrim .Net Script Framework never got updated for AE or beyond
is this going to be a case of ILSpy decompiling makes it a better experience?
or is it genuinely 560k in a single class or whatever
The source code is in a zip on the nexus page
When the source for a mod that includes no assets is that large, be afraid. Be very afraid
It's multiple classes. I think it was managed mappings of various C++ types
The naming convention makes me think it might've been autogenerated
so ILSpy decompile would at least file split it again
But hard to say for sure, since they didn't include that
Hmm. Perhaps
But the point is more "this thing has at least 560k lines of code", not it all being in one file
(specifically because the question was about updating it)
LOL
you winning top 10 most active users this week as the channel was renamed amused me greatly
anything not using the magic address library thing I think didn't survive the various AE+ updates
and even address library did a hard split for AE+
Yeah, I was more wondering why the framework had never been picked up by anyone else, since a fair few mods used it from what I recalled
https://stardew.chat
One of the buttons there
yay im lower
Also, apparently you are higher than me on the all-time leaderboard
oh inteeresting, the author of netframework was the same author as the address libary
I've never even seen this page before
you can just do /lb for the easy route
wow we worked so hard
fake mod
Ah yes, I love using python to reads notes mansage data, sciendelss, and show idea
Oh and write scripts twice XD
oh my friend and I found an amazing one of these right before chatgpt got popular enough to blame, it was a comparison between python and c that included details like how python is faster but c is easier to write
No idea what you're talking about, that is entirely true without a shadow of a doubt, C is an easy language because it's interpreted /s
I do love stumbling across infographics like this, they always make me giggle given the utter codswollop they have on them
idk if I'd let python write scripts I don't trust that guy
my favourite thing to do with python is Tarm Prongs 😌
some of these are real words I'm just not sure what they mean
Try IData?
try IData is giving me the middle finger so i'd rather not find out what it means by that
ah the famous square-curly brace we use to Write Scripts
i guess it's kind of correct using the classic drive/database icon for Make Websites but i cant even begin to understand why it's using the android for Analyze Tasks
Show idea being that mess of orange and not a light bulb like one of the write script is baffling to me, lightbulbs are always for ideas
Sciendelss being a cog with a pentagon in the middle is like the only logical one!
It is until you realise that cog wouldn't actually work bc theres nowhere for the shaft to go bc the bore is taken up by the pentagon, Manage Data is a pretty logical one too, it looks like a spreadsheet/table
what did you get
Www exciting!
(+power adapter, expansion cables, and numpad)
oh ho the big boy
oh do they finally have linux layouts now
It's weird they offer a single 48 GB stick and not two 24 GB ones, I guess you don't get dual channel
I'm still waiting for a 360 touch screen version either made by the community or framework themselves, once that happens I am so buying one
Tbh 360 touch screen (I have an acer with one) isn't that great
And fatally compromised the hinge tbh
48GB of RAM is insanely good though
atp I can't use a laptop without it, I would go for a tablet but the lack of upgradability and locked down OS make that very much unideal, The hinge is 100% the failure point on 360 laptops, thats where my last one broke and I've been angry about it ever since
My seven or nine year old baby is beautiful and fine
But she's spent the last two years sitting on a laptop stand and even before that I was pretty careful
(Yes. I refer to my laptop (and my car) as my babies.)
I specifically chose a single large stick because that means if I upgrade later I don’t have to replace any - only need new ones
all my tech and gadgetry are my children, I care for them better than I care for myself it seems XD
Would dual channel RAM be noticeably faster when using DDR5 5600? surely at that point it's being limited by the programs themselves/moving from drive to RAM than the RAM
Isn’t no dual channel, like, bad
I couldn't notice a difference on DDR3 3333 dual channel or single channel at least (but I don't use much thats heavy on RAM)
I’ve never really researched it, but it wouldn’t surprise me. I didn’t really think about it
Like, half frequency bad
I form strong emotional ties to my stuff and get sad when it has to be replaced
My dad has been suggesting a new car for the last two years
You'll take baby from my cold dead hands, thanks
Bet i can get ten more years
🚙 kill me
She gets her maintenance done on schedule!!!!
(Mom is also trying to take my seven year old running shoes from me.)
Most tabs I think I've ever had, and probably will ever have?
Rookie numbers
You people are insane
Always
I have 200 on my phone
…do these even still do their job?
I don't wear them for running! I wear them day to day and for lifting lol
I’m having a hard time telling if that’s more or less use
By use I meant demand x time
The uppers have mostly detached at this point lol
Wow we’re doing shoe math now
So like. It's more use tbh but I demand less of shoes I'm not running in
Also.
Running shoes are expensive lol
Everyone in my family runs
It hurts my head whenever I hear about how much she spent on her new running shoes, like, every year
I think she pays about twice as much
The way I think of it.....those shoes are expensive but medical care costs way more haha
reminds me i need to buy the desk that unbreaks your back 🙂↕️
Life pro tip
wait the desk unbreaks the back and not the chair?
well if you're standing up there is no chair to break your back
my desk is entirely sit-stand and I think I've only genuinely used it in standing configuration like 10 times (outside of lifting it for cleaning underneath)
i hear that a lot lol
also annoying to ensure everything is cabled to work
hoping that a combination of 'my daily desk is still here in a different room with all my stuff' and 'my back is on the brink of destruction' is enough to keep me standing often at a separate work desk
and of course 'this desk costs more than i'm worth'
the work desks are sit-stand desk as well and I don't think I've seen anyone use them standing after the first week we had them
well standing like a lamppost in the middle of the office is a little odd lol
there's a couple people at my office with a standing desk riser but they don't use them
I prefer just doing my lunch walk
mm, i try to stand fairly often at work and walk on breaks. any excuse to not sit down the whole day
at work we also had some standing desks with tall boi chairs and they were great
You can justify any purchase situation with the words "it's cheaper than therapy."
"this vacation home in the bahamas is cheapter than therapy"
Lol, my boss asked me today if I wanted a sit stand desk
if it's over 500 dollars say hell yea
I mean like I dont work from home so
But i also regularly just stand at my desk
Like a weirdo
see now you mention a tallboi chair i'm interested
I checked my camera gallary, apparently I never took a photo that had them?
did you ever really have them..
I think that's SMS
I learned the other day that SOS actually doesn't stand for Save Our Souls
iirc we don’t actually know what it stood for, right?
I don't think it stands for anything, it was just easy to type in morse code
oh it doesn’t stand for anything, yeah
apparently you could also equivalently do IWB or 3B and end up with the same morse code (since SOS is transmitted without breaks between the letters)
"Boss, they keep saying 'EEETTTEEE' over and over again"
"It's probably nothing"
is T .---. and E .. then?
E is a single dot, T is a single dash
A
for some reason I blocked out that there’s three of each lmao
finally. super open source
Save my soul 🙁
Send Overflowing Starburst
(It’s tasty, I want a lot)
...cheaper than therapy
it's amazing how the price of everything makes you feel justified in spending $17.43 on some coasters
u mean those funny desks they have at work r 1.6k dollars
well the melamine/veneer ones start around 900, and this is the smallest size
I think the chairs at my office are double that if not more
make sure you don't install the powerpoints in the cable channel upset down in the dark
after you've put the monitor arm on preventing it from opening fully again
:,)
the acacia is a paltry 1200
now why wouldn't i do that
Granted it's not 2015 but damn, $1.2k on raw materials and tools....
note that its AUD not USD, and the prices would be inclusive of taxs, not a magic line item at the end
I cant hear you over my new saws
well the tabletops alone are 'only' a few hundred
the rest is in the legs, motors, electronics, business costs, etc
surprisingly you can buy a slightly busted version of the same product for a discount
But what aboit the saw
it does not come with a saw
DEWALT 12-in 20-volt max Dual Bevel Sliding Compound Cordless Miter Saw in the Miter Saws department at Lowes.com https://share.google/2mF78u6OVj3B0jzpt
while that does have a motor, it's still not very useful as a table
I have a bespoke variant of https://stando.com.au/products/summit-series-ultimate-gaming-corner-desk under their previous company
(This might be the most expensive saw i could find)
And probably is less expensive than the one in the makerspace tbh
Anywyas
Motors dont cost thattt much
this does further the idea that the legs are more expensive than the table, given that one has 3 legs and costs as much as the hardwood desk
Pcb layout doesnt cost that much ||when your labor is free||
cordless???/
cordless??
what are saws up to these days
ah yes, this must be the containerisation i've heard so much about
https://desky.com.au/collections/office-pods-meeting-booths
definitely team i could build that
dont ask about the half finished piles of lumber in my closet
It helps that dad will definitely let me borrow his table saw
table saws scare me ngl
