I also want a squirrel cage

safe dragon
#

I mean you're going to need a fair few of em unless you want unfilled holes on the side of ur laptop

devout vault
#

Like "what if I ever need ethernet connection" or "what if Iever need to connect a microsd AND an sd, or even multiple of one" or "what if I end up needing to use an audio hack"

ivory shadow
#

lol

devout vault
#

And that's ignoring that you always need more USB C/A slots

#

(And that some displays only support one of USC B, HDMI, and DP, so who knows what combination I'll need???)

safe dragon
#

(you can always buy more later)

safe dragon
#

of course my bad

#

you need it

#

right now

devout vault
#

If they were like $50 each it'd be one thing

#

But most are ~$20, and the USB ones are closer to $10

#

What the heck

ivory shadow
#

You can get a cheaper power adapter elsewhere

#

If you're not going for maximum wattage for a graphics module

#

So this isn't really a big deal

devout vault
#

I mean the graphics module was out of stock, so...

supple ether
#

That's very cute

cinder karma
#

Thankfully my work laptop has ethernet

#

I'm one of few that have it

sand frost
#

My work desktops all have Ethernet

#

We would not function without that

#

I actually wish they had more Ethernet ports

safe dragon
#

my work laptop does not have an ethernet port

#

it's provided by a dock

dusty pollen
#

I don't have ethernet wiring at home :(

#

everything is on wifi

#

except maybe the one TV right next to the router? but actually even that might be on wifi

devout vault
#

My dad doesn't want cables going all the way upstairs, so I'm always on wifi

cinder karma
#

We actually installed extra network cards!

#

Because NI

#

A lot of our devices use ethernet to communicate so

i want stationary and reasonably powerful, repairability is low on the list

You know my life would be a lot better if opening a file in vim wojld attempt a checkout

#

I bet i could get vim to do that

#

Vscode....now has AI integration

marble jewel
#

At least that makes some sense. Shoehorning AI into everything is like the new running Java.

cinder karma
#

Why does pandas take so long

devout vault
#

Hasn't vscode had AI integration for a while

#

I get the copilot popup everyt ime I open it

devout vault
#

I think atra meant checkout in the other source control sense

#

ie. the ones that require checking out a file before editing

marble jewel
#

VSCode had AI functionality via an extension, but it now has "proper" MCP server support

cinder karma

No, standard cubicle walls accept push pins usually

safe dragon
#

oh I've never seen a cubicle wall irl before

#

(nor cubicles obviously)

cinder karma
#

Really?

safe dragon
#

yeah

#

I've only ever seen cubicles in TV series and movies

#

I've always just had regular desks without any walls.
The whole team would just share the same room

#

every team has their own room

cinder karma
#

We have half cubicles

dusty pollen
#

every company I've seen was more of a "one big space all the teams shared with some sitting areas etc to break it up" situation but same vibe, low dividers behind the computer to separate it from the desk behind but that's it

devout vault
#

After moving offices they had what I can only describe as "mega cubicles" (basically, like 3 times the size, with a person in each corner). Usually separated by discipline (like programmers together, artists together, etc.) and possibly current project

devout vault
#

Why does .doc editing suck

#

Two lines of text have an extra line between them, and I need to compress things

#

Backspace? Removes both lines. Enter after the backspace? Adds two lines

#

Shift changes nothing

#

Copy paste the text into notepad? There is in fact an extra line

#

aaaaaaaaaa

dusty pollen
devout vault
#

(Also an extra space I could see but word's caret was pretending didn't exist)

#

Take out the line in notepad and paste over it?

Fine, until I add the styling back, in which case it's even worse

fleet wren
#

in a more civilized world we will all be using markdown/tex

devout vault

I would literally have an easier time doing this in HTML/CSS than this

#

Turning off all line spacing after paragraph fixed it

red crest
#

it should be second nature to you by the time you're 25

devout vault
#

Also why can't I make this table shorter despite the contents having like 5 lines worth of extra contents

#

(...oh, I only cleared out the empty newlines on one side)

#

Why is the down arrow selecting everything at the end of the table instead of something sane, like going to the next row

#

(But only after typing text into the cell)

fleet wren
#

I break my knees three times per day, morning, noon and night

red crest

pliant snow
devout vault
#

I've never heard of any text expanders before. Seems like a neat idea

steel kraken
#

I have no idea how that could work but it scares me

devout vault
#

I assume via keylogging and copious backspacing

pliant snow
#

yes

#

I used to use autohotkey a lot, although it doesn't overlap with this

steel kraken
#

In its most basic form, a text expander is composed of two parts:

A global key detector that intercepts the keys pressed by the user, in order to determine if a trigger was typed.

A key injection mechanism that injects the final text into the current application, a process known as expansion.

At this point, some of you may think that espanso is acting as a key-logger, due to the global key detector we mentioned before. The good news is, it's not!

While espanso detects key presses as a keylogger would do, it doesn't log anything. Moreover, to further reduce risks, for regular matches, espanso only stores in memory the last five chars by default (you can change this amount by setting the backspace_limit parameter in the config), and this is needed to allow the user to correct wrongly typed triggers by pressing backspace, up to 5 characters. For regex matches the system can store up to 30 characters.

devout vault
#

I mean I didn't mean keylogging literally šŸ˜›

#

why no mention of copious backspaces, smh

pliant snow
#

it seems to have glowing reviews

steel kraken
#

are the glowing reviews injected by the tool

pliant snow
#

im not sure how much I'd use it tho

steel kraken
#

I feel like I'd have a good amount of false positives which would be annoying

pliant snow
#

I think so long as you have a pretty unique command symbol you wouldn't be accidentally triggering it

steel kraken
#

sand frost
#

I don’t think it meets my needs, personally

cinder karma
#

Doesn't the windows copy and paste buffer have a memory od ten entries

devout vault
#

I mean my brain buffer has a copy paste buffer of one (or less, depending on the day), so...

steel kraken

safe dragon

I've been on vacation so they knew they had the opportunity

dusty pollen

they broke localhost? how? wha?

fleet wren
#

there has never been a more "this feature vibe coded by AI" feature

dusty pollen
#

at least it doesn't force open edge, I guess? because there are windows things that do

hushed raven
#

F1 for instance, I always used to miss press it then had to wait 3-5 business days for edge to load up

safe dragon
#

you'd lose connection with localhost which I find kind of beautiful

#

sorry your own computer is currently not reachable

dusty pollen
#

they firewalled too close to the sun, now my computer is in the fire

safe dragon
#

can't have security bugs if it doesn't work

#

you'd think they have a test suite for localhost requests

#

actually you'd think they'd have test suites that rely on localhost requests

#

it's been a good time for windows haters

dusty pollen
safe dragon
#

they actually only do tests where it's supposed to fail and all the localhost tests failed so it was successful

dusty pollen
#

or maybe their tests search for a defined error code/text and it didn't come up /hj

safe dragon
#

"nope only fatal errors, not the one we're looking for"

devout vault
safe dragon
#

my favorite is blazingly fast marketing for things where the speed of it has never been a problem

devout vault
safe dragon
#

it's like every new terminal needing to talk about how it's blazingly fast like linux doesn't already have like 700 that fit that description

hushed raven
#

The day I encounter a slow terminal will be the day I fully leave eveything and live in a hovel

safe dragon
#

like man we ain't in windows where powershell takes 7 seconds to load your basic custom plugin config

devout vault
#

Just if you ever feel like forcing that

hushed raven
#

given the state ChatGPT is in rn it would probably not even launch

devout vault
#

Infinitely slow, then. Couldn’t be better for this purpose

hushed raven
#

To classify it as slow I would have to benchmark it against another terminal, if it doesn't work that just classifies it as "Broken" and not "Slow"

#

even though it is infinitely slow by a technicality

devout vault
#

But what if ā€œdoesn’t launchā€ means ā€œhangs, seemingly indefinitelyā€ instead of ā€œcrash immediatelyā€?

Then it’s hard to tell if it’s broken or if it would just take 10 years per command

hushed raven
#

for it to classify as "Working" to get addigned "Slow" it would have 1. load a window, 2. let me type a command, and 3. send the command on pressing Enter, so if it does that, doesn't crash, and still hangs I'll take that as slow, anything else is either broken or not good enough to turn me into "Local Woods Cryptid"

#

wait why am I justifying NOT becoming the local cryptid, stuff that, I shall be finding a hovel immediately

Char has to be the smallest addressable unit of memory (so, a byte)

prisma flume

the point of char is to stop people from using int i = 'i'

Int is usually four bytes

prisma flume
#

i should've known it's valid cpp

why wouldn't it be

(oh no. it's valid c# too. how could i ever forget)

devout vault
#

I mean it's probably valid C

hushed raven
#

Online C++ compiler is a great thing that I had no idea existed

devout vault
#

Also, in C# I'm pretty sure char is two bytes not one

#

Since C# uses UTF-16 I think

#

Or am I completely misremembering

#

(C++ uses "handle it yourself, I couldn't care less")

hushed raven
safe dragon
#

yes C# chars are 16 bit

hushed raven
#

(not the AI result, the stack overflow and reddit results)

devout vault
#

I had to do some System.Encoding stuff to convert a C# string to bytes recently while doing interop nonsense

#

So I was pretty sure I was remembering right

safe dragon
# safe dragon yes C# chars are 16 bit

this is a fun fact when you're running a password hashing algorithm in multiple different programs and then get different results because 1 is utf8 and the other utf16

#

this has fucked me up before

devout vault
#

Hashing messed me up when we moved from .net framework to .net 6, since GetHashCode was no longer deterministic between runs of the program

#

"what were you using that behavior for even"
squashing string item IDs into an int for DGA

#

(ie. the butterfly effect that led to 1.6, because Pathos said "that's spooky I'm gonna ask to change item IDs to long instead of int" and then it snowballed)

safe dragon
#

the first mistake was relying on GetHashCode to be deterministic

devout vault
#

I mean, a hash of a string shouldn't change based on when it's being calculated (or any hash), in my mind

#

If you're just using it for a hash map or something, that's fine

#

But like

#

The checksumss to verify you got the right download for things would be useless then

devout vault
#

(Or stuff like regex)

hushed raven
#

thats good to know! I shall keep that in mind when I cba opening code

This is why the "amount of games unplayed" statistic is useless for me

If there was a version that only counted things you purchased yourself on steam directly, that would be much more interesting

and actually embarassing most likely, thanks to the era of buying tons of games each steam sale

I think about 95% of the 550 games I own are unplayed

we don't talk about that category, it's a wild west down there and it deserves nothing but ignorance

hushed raven

I'm just baffled because why couldn't you just use printscreen

That's not something you have to install

hushed raven

Oh printscreen has no funtionalilty on my computer, I have to install something then bind that key to it

(I mean I use sharex, but nowadays you can crop with printscreen directly on windows without an MSpaint intermediary)

devout vault
hushed raven

I'm not on windows anymore, I gave it up XD

Why would any modern OS not have printscreen built in

#

(in before "bold of you to call <insert linux distro> modern")

hushed raven
#

specifically arch pilled, pretty sure most distros are bundled with a program to do that, even Desktop environments like KDE are bundled with one, but I just switched over to hyprland and I'm still configuring it

devout vault
#

Oh, okay, so you brought that upon yourself

hushed raven
#

(I did use KDE but desided to give a window manager a try instead of a desktop environment)

#

Oh ye I totally brought it upon myself, I didn't realise it was something I used often XD

devout vault
safe dragon
#

even niri has a built in screenshot utility fwiw and hyprland has hyprshot it's just not installed by default

hushed raven
#

Desktop Envrionment is like windows, windows you can drag around and resize, a Window manager causes windows to tile nicely together, predominantly for keyboard navigation over mouse, that is a very oversimplified explanation

#

It was hyprshot I just installed, a lot of stuff isn't preinstalled with hyprland which is the main reason I got it, I dislike bloat quite a lot

safe dragon
#

what you're describing is a floating window manager vs a tiling window manager

hushed raven
#

That is a much better explanation, thank you, both can technically desktop environments good point

safe dragon
#

a desktop environment is just a collection of a bunch of different packages and tools intended to fulfill every regular person's use without needing to install or set up anything extra

hushed raven
#

the differences between tiling and floating window managers are still very new to me, but I'm liking the tiling one so far

devout vault
hushed raven
#

sorry for the confusion XD

safe dragon
#

there are desktop environments with built in tiling modes, primarily cosmic

devout vault
#

I definitely am interested in tiling window managers, but like, I like floating too much.

If I could use a tiled for one monitor and floating for the rest, I might have tried it

safe dragon
devout vault
#

Floating is mainly nice because I can’t quite place cheat a little by staggering windows diagonally for easy access to a bunch at once

hushed raven
#

hyprland does also support floating windows, but theres no minimising without an extra package which is a tad bit of a shame to me

safe dragon
#

why would you minimize in a tiling window manager

devout vault
#

Is cosmic a rare windows one, or another Linux one

#

Atlas said hyprland supports floating but not minimizing

safe dragon
#

cosmic is Linux yes. It's owned by System76, the Linux laptop/pc retailer

devout vault
#

Well, feel free to give me Linux window manager recommendations for when I get that framework laptop soon ish

i've never noticed ankle fatigue actually, but i do have carpet throughout (i hate it)

#

although im not usually just standing around on carpet with a sitting desk

#

is yours the standing mat or the balance board?

hardy jewel
#

the balance board

#

you'd probably be totally fine on carpet without anything else

#

there are also cheaper alternatives on the market for that stuff that'd do the same thing if you wanted one later on

I am having such a hard time trying to find a volume mixer that has separate volume control per application (that preferably can also be added to waybar), do this just not exist for hyprland? the best I can get is the KDE plasma system settings which honestly isn't Idea at all

partially on-topic but the correct people are here, but doing my first runtime test of .net9 smapi and more stuff exploded than last time I did this with .net7, and part of the uplift was also bumping harmony, and some wild behaviour now exists

looks like if you harmony patch a generic method, it mutates the type arguments now?, so profiler patching the GameContentManager.LoadExact with Texture2D as a placeholder argument is now making some/all content pipeline operations a texture load when it wasn't meant to. After turning off those profiler patches it seemed to be fine

Otherwise it mostly just worked, I also fixed the audio issue, so the only issues I experienced was the Profiler generic patches, Better Friendship shipping a system .NET 6 DLL which blew up as a .NET 9 one was already loaded, and one BETAs transpiler errored out https://smapi.io/log/90bbdfc61fa4471f98be856b41770664

var matcher = new CodeMatcher(code, il).End();

matcher.SetOpcodeAndAdvance(OpCodes.Ldarg_1);
matcher.Insert(new CodeInstruction(OpCodes.Ldarg_0), [more instructions here]);

how can this even error

#

unless Harmony is no longer treating the instructions as a list that can be resized or something... ?

steel kraken
#

its the only harmony patch that errored out and plenty of other patches insert extra instructions

red crest
#

i imagine it has something to do with me going straight to the end

#

they added a new IsInvalid check to the Insert function, where a CodeMatcher's current position is invalid if it is less than 0 or greater than or equal to the current length of the instructions

#

that method of determining validity isnt new, but it being applied to Insert (as well as some various others) is

#

so you just cant add directly onto the end of an instruction list anymore, i guess

guess it wants to more ensure correctness and not have people overriding the ret, inserting after where the ret originally was, and putting a ret back in again

but thats exactly what i wanna doooo

(out of pure inertial laziness of not wanting to change what currently works anyway, since i know functionally its exactly the same if i just add my stuff before the ret and dont overwrite it)
