So there's this thing called cleartype where it uses color to light/dim rgb subpixels to give greater definition to edges and small features. If you don't have that, or if you fuck it up, it can make text look all weird

Alternatively they're using bitmap fonts for some ungodly reason and the scaling is making it blurry
