I would have accepted Worms as the mistaken reference.
I made bestie watch it a few months ago
because he sucks as a human being and wouldn't accept "I wasn't born here
" as an excuse
I think his brain exploded
Bad prof
Would you have been more or less upset if someone said it was the grenade from the Worms games
I tried to watch holy grail a few years ago and couldn't get through it
Ah DH mentioned that
We were watching and the whole time he was alternating between laughing and going "Hueeuuuuu?" Like a fucking early warning siren
||john cleese's transphobia is really on full show in that one||
Eeeeeh
Even being here doesn't mean someone would've known it. I would've assumed it was a worms thing probably to this day if not for some family friends
||ah. Yeah I just ignored that bit, I'm used to filtering out stuff on account of reading all the old literature with the racism against Indians
||
WHY ARE YOU PFFFTING ME
I didn't notice that. To be fair I don't think I've watched it in like a decade, and ||I didn't know trans people were a thing (despite being one) until like 5 years ago||
tbf, "here" to us is the uk, where it's much more common to know monty python because they are from here too
(The side eye emoji here looks more like someone took an empty emoji head and just pasted an eye on the head, rather than a sideview)
Alas, my US-centrisism is on display once again
(No but seriously tho a lot of authors from the UK and West in general in the early 1900s and before had very odd views of the colonies)
What's considered very odd
racism
Ah, so standard colonialism
1, 3, 5....
I looked it up to make sure I'm not misremembering and it looks like a lot of actual activists have convinced themselves it's not a bad scene? which I assume is the nostalgia speaking, because... it is
I thought you meant something more absurd (like conspiracy theory level stuff)
I'll read something and go "Hey, I resemble that remark!"
I had to read some stuff churchill wrote once. It was bad.
If I talk about Churchill here I'll get bonked
Who is John Cleese
(not to mention people like Rudyard Kipling)
I have Views
monty python, fawlty towers
I'd have fit right in with the anti-establishment crowd of the 20s tbh with the Views
Loud voice, enjoys the odd beer, wears dresses just below the knee and has Views
Most unsuitable for a young lady doncherknow /s
quill, have you seen the trevor noah sketch about the british arriving at india?
I have not
I don't watch him, admittedly
Or wait no maybe it's been sent in the family group at some point
I don't any more either but it was a solid one (in terms of making fun of the british)
(Completely unrelated, but I'm 1 minute into the yuri anime of the season (I think there's only one?) and am shocked by the animation so far. Like, I don't know how else to describe it but by saying it just has so much character (positive). I hope it keeps up.)
Nintendo May Use "Shorter Development Periods" On Some Games To Offset High Costs (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-may-use-shorter-development-periods-on-some-games-to-offset-high-costs/1100-6532996/)
Anyone taking bets on whether that means they at least back down on the new $80 baseline for prices?
(I have mixed feelings on the price raise in general, it's just funny for them to market the decision that way when the consumer likely won't see cost decreases, if I had to guess)
That really reads as “well, you think they’re too expensive so we’ll make them shittier instead”
"we're making pokemon even more shit"
I have a hot take about video games
The bar is on the floor and they decided to dig to keep from passing it
(Fun fact, antipodesmap.com is incredibly broken on Firefox)
Okay now it works
After I try to capture a video
I tried several times before
oh no the price stays high, we just get games that are even less release ready now
(My hot take on video games is that 4k/hyper realism/120fps don't matter )
all that matters is mods
according to Dr Google Images my hand pain while typing is gout. This is why we can obviously trust tools like chatgpt to have good data re medical issues--
(...is that a hot take? at least among consumers?)
I have always hated hyper realism
It's better now, but I especialily hated the "realistic means brown" era
(Guess what my main complaint about Twilight Princess is, and that's still fairly stylized compared to today)
my least favourite was the "realistic means grimdark cyberpunk with no morals" era
(And you can't avoid it in twilight princess. The Brown Dimension is like 70% the point of the game)
Ah, when was that? I might've missed it by only playing nintendo stuff
it was less games and more tv etc
(I am officially the twilight realm The Brown Dimension from now on)
Ah. I avoided that by not caring about live action (and tv in general for a while there)
A lot of western cartoons I remember really not liking the art style of too though
...most of the ones coming to mind are cartoon network ones, can't recall for sure for nickelodeon
I see you found my old HP fanfiction
Not quite sure how since it didnt leave my hd but
hackerman.jpg
Here's a hotter take
I try to hold to a policy where I will not buy a piece of entertainment until I'm ready to consume it
This goes for books, TV shows, movies and...yarn
I bought 4 books today 🙈
I was about to say "just don't finish projects" but it sounds like you have that figured out in yarn land
My gamer tag is literally "Yarn" at the moment
I was very tempted to change mine to HOOT (the one the owl house server has), but ultimately decided not to since KAR2 is coming out but no new TOH content probably will
atra can I tell you a tragedy
just when I got in a creative mood again, I appear to have developed some kind of hand bullshit that means I can't do literally any of my creative outlets, knitting included
Hmm, if just brainstorming is good enough to tide you over, you could use speech transcription software?
But yes, big tragedy
I have an accent, I don't do tts
Does this include typing
yup
Aren't tts systems supposed to be able to train for your accent
VR headset virtual keyboard?
Assuming it's finger nonsense not full hand/somewhat wrist nonsense
(I say, as if everyone casually has a VR headset)
is this a good time to say that vr makes me extremely nauseous?
Even seated, no movement even via joystick? RIP
I would’ve assumed room scale type movement would be fine for motion sickness
Both hands or just one?
Welcome to my world a year ago lol
Hope you get your hands back soon
I'll admit I never tried too much since I don't own a headset and get nauseous from everything
(it's probably tendonitis or some other kind of rsi haha but ty for the advice guys! I think the best way forward is to stop being an idiot and actually rest it for a few days)
Soak in warm water
(anyway, I shall take my own advice and just go to sleep considering I also nearly fainted like an hour ago. night guys)
I agree
Real
it's that time again. I just spent 2 weeks on my laptop and now my pc monitors looks blurry cause I got used to the high ppi display
Every other time I plug my laptop into the docking station my laptop suddenly decides my right monitor is about half the actual resolution
Also
Since when was SharePoint svn
sharepoint's what now
all I know about sharepoint is that the company I work for seemingly uses it to... host some websites and forms?
I still don't really understand what it is or why I would ever interact with it
I have to go there to see news updates
Work has enabled the feature on SharePoint where I have to check out the file to edit it
As if it was svn
This is incredibly annoying because a coworker and I are both trying to update the status tracker
"Why not just use jira" it's a long story
we use uh
azure devops
we are forced into using sharepoint less cause our work gives us additional restrictions when it comes to using cloud services
and microsoft stopped offering on premise versions ages ago
<Perforce flashbacks>
(It makes sense for binary files, but I hated it for the actual code, since sometimes it's easier to just edit this random file unrelated to your current task while debugging)
(At least the text files do allow multiple checkouts at once... still hated it though)
I miss Azure DevOps so much
i am now the owner of my.. 4th? 4tb hd
not 4th bc 3 died but 4th bc 1 is probably dead and 2 are in my nas
Ah, yes. C++ include directives, my favorite method of hacking.
Other fun bits include:
int i;const int debug_mode = false;int Max(int a, int b) {return A>b?a::b;}
(Still better than the people who use HTML to represent hacking, though...)
I do my best hacking while reading binary
but its tradition for a screen containing html dom to be a representation of hacker man
Nobody wants to watch a "hacker" being bored on their notifications screen waiting for someone to fall for their social engineering
to be fair, the most successful hacking is social engineering, so by $$$ amount, the best hackers probably do use html the most
True but that doesn’t make for a thrilling hacking scene
<insert that parody video where they plug in more keyboards and have more people type on them at once to get stuff don’t better/faster>
I think my favorite is the castle one
Which one is that?
Are there any where there’s the classic “we’re being hacked” scene and after a lot of effort somebody walks by and just unplugs the internet?
I feel like I’ve seen a similar one but with a power cable instead
no but it does send cat videos to the other side
It's the ncis one with the multiple keyboards where he just unplugs the computer
Ah I’ve seen that one before but I forgot
(The one you posted and the one you just mentioned)
Always nice of hackers to show you a live progress update of how hacked you are
and just having a bunch of firewalls in series
I mean if they were in parallel instead of series you’d only need to bypass one
We need one where someone is doing the stereotypical stuff and someone who Actually Knows Things comes by and says “that’s not how that works” and it turns out the supposed hacker was just a scammer
Made this elaborate UI just to hide it
Using their front end skills for evil. (Implying front end devs don’t regularly commit crimes against my sanity)
(I'm not sorry, not remorsive and I will do it again)
Or one where there’s a bunch of groups competing to hack into the same target the fastest, all using different absurd methods.
And the person who wins is just the social engineering person
“Who can get this data the fastest”
The guy who copied someone’s ID card when they went to a nearby restaurant, then walks into the server room and just takes the literal hardware the data is on
I've watched enough of Deviant's videos to know theres like a decent chance the door is badly installed that you can just use a piece of plastic to open the door by shimming the bolt thing
they do the id cloning and other stuff too, but also sometimes just drill doors open in broad daylight to see if they will get caught, and then not get caught anyway
Brb making my computer have a second password that when entered just wipes it all clean (in a non recoverable way).
(Requires not caring about your life once they realize it, though)
Or it looks like it worked fine but just has realistic-ish dummy data when logged in, while it does the erasing of the real data in secret.
having a highly complex honeypot
(Though anyone being serious enough would backup the harddrive before trying to get in, huh)
getting hpmor flashbacks
I read that ages ago but can’t recall what part that relates to
Like those stories of mafia front restaurants that are always empty but someone doesn’t know it’s a front and goes in and does actually get a good meal
the good occulemens or whatever would pretend to be someone almost identical to themselves and answer the queries as fast as a normal person would so you can never know if they have the occulemency barriers up or not
Ah.
Is that just hpmor? I kinda assumed snake did that in canon to fool Voldemort since he would be suspicious if snake kept a block up around him
I never actually read actual hp and just watched the movies
Apparently snape is now a snake, thanks autocorrect
I can’t remember how much either goes into detail on it if at all. Just seems like a logical conclusion to me
but legilimancy and occulemency is normal hp, and I think perfect occculemency is normal hp too, as its why you can't just use the truth serum on everyone, as perfect occulemency works on that too
Oh it does? I didn’t realize truth serum could be bypassed with occulemency
at least in hpmor, its alleged that lucius was a perfect occulemens and why he cant testify whether he is or isn't a death eater
I don’t remember many specifics about hpmor unless I sit and try to recall. The main thing I remember offhand is the horcrux location stuff
having read hpmor so many times, I don't particularly want to go near actual harry potter because I'll just be annoyed by all the inconsistencies that hpmor fixed and I didn't even notice
I only ever read it once ages ago
I think I've done like 5 or so read throughs now, 2 in audiobook form factor the rest in print
The only hpmor thing recently was a video about the strange IRL cult-like stuff it ended up leading to
(I meant strange as in weird, but it was also the strange aeons video…)
tbh I could see the rationality / 'less wrong' crowd falling for something like that
iirc its normal for occulemens to have their barriers up all the time, and at least in hpmor, voldemort was allegedly unique in being able to do it without direct eyesight as well
On the mobile side, GrapheneOS already does this
Funnily enough it can also do this iirc
Ah, but you see, I’m an iOS pleb
I would be terrified with a false password kill switch on anything that isn't thoroughly backed up anyway (in which case targetting the backups is probably easier)
I just discovered I still have a new-in-package 1TB HDD that's been on my shelf since 2010
I was talking about specific trigger password, not a wrong password trigger
Does it work?
It was a replacement for a DOA one from WD
It better, it's still in the sleeve
Not that I have a use for it atm
When the threat model expected is law enforcement and your options are wipe the phone or have a copy of the phone bruteforced, wiping is generally preferred
It could be dead though
I feel like the second they see its not stock android or ios, they do the copy anyway
Schrödinger's HDD
They'd need to get the phone back to place with a cellebrite machine, which usually they don't just bring around with them
How about the most secure data protection method in history: putting your secrets in a folder labeled “homework”
And by the time that happens the 18-hour reset timer may very well have hit anyway
(I only ever had homework folders that actually had only homework in them, though. I was boring)
I'm finally transitioning from my old PC to my new one, and I think I managed to kill the last 2 remaining HDDs in it by zeroing their free space. They both just click and clack endlessly. They're both from at least 2010 though.
Encode your data as mathematical equations and label it maths homework
Sounds like stenography (if I’m remembering the right name)
Nope that’s not it
Oh it’s steganogrophy
.define steganogrophy
Definition not found. Did you mean steganography?
Luckily I've already pulled all data off of them a will be wiping them the rest of the way soon anyways
.define steganography
noun: cryptography
Wow, so helpful
Steganography ( STEG-ə-NOG-rə-fee) is the practice of representing information within another message or physical object, in such a manner that the presence of the concealed information would not be evident to an unsuspecting person's examination. In computing/electronic contexts, a computer file, message, image, or video is concealed within ...
Someone should encode installed stardew mods into the screen for easy troubleshooting
Actually that sounds reasonably doable
Just max a mixes to 254 and big qr code
...that's actually a really good idea.
Too bad it'd need to be in smapi itself or something to be effective
And could be considered a bad idea in other ways.
But purely from a troubleshooting perspective, it sounds great
what other ways
I imagine there are plenty of people who wouldn't like their mod list being visible from any screenshot/video, even excluding people with problematic mods
guess so
- Implement this.
- Someone posts a screenshot of an innocent thing, and gets bapped because the screenshot revealed the name of NSFW Mod 1000.

I'd kinda expect nexus to immediately ban smapi or a mod if that was auto-on
A "share mods" mod that generated a QR code containing a link to every installed mod (that can be sourced, at least) would be pretty cool, though.
I'm not paranoid enough to want a killswitch
so https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/32609 that encodes the url to a qr code?
there's no bapping here for having nsfw mods in your log though, is there?
this has been in my todo list for over a year
If you ever want help with that, I've done similar things before
@hasty island what sort of mc mods do you make?
oh that's a lot of moons
cool concepts though!
damn good thing I decided to check my work phone despite vacation. My password would've expired tomorrow and I'd have had to go to IT
expiring passwords
Fun fact: my work password expired months ago
Which is fine because I forgot it a year ago anyways
I just use my yubikey 🙈
If this stops working I'll have to beg IT
I read somewhere that requiring periodic password changes is bad since in practice it'd just result in static (at best) or ever decreasing (as worst, also the most likely scenario) password complexity
it also wouldn't help if your db got pwned and you aren't aware in the first place (unless you require a password change every 24 hours, which is a guaranteed road to every password being hunter2)
Tbh when I was hired 2fa with Yubi was required
requiring periodic password changes is, in my experience, a practice with only downsides. i despise it
Frequent password changes would only ever be a decent thing security-wise if the passwords were entirely random and people couldn't choose their own.
But then you get very angry people.
Which is usually far worse.
my university required password changes every 6 months and I was like why the fuck is this necessary, what matter of national security could my mailbox/Canvas account be possibly guarding
I think for real security you should "just" require 2fa
And having very specific known password requirements (like 5 lowercase, 3 capital, 2 numbers, 2 symbols) is really bad because it reduces the surface area for brute force attempts.
And yeah, physical security key or go home pretty much if security matters.
maximum length on a password field is a huge red flag and i see it frequently
Oh, you know what's even worse? No maximum length, but it just truncates the password silently.
I mean... arguably kinda not worse, but I dislike it more.
oh yeah i've seen that too
Oh my bank is like that.
More to the point, you get people who can't remember their passwords that write it down, thereby reducing security
TOTP my beloved
Yeah, basically, you just can't enforce good password security and guarantee it is/will remain good.
Actually worse: Truncates when storing, but not for comparison
Though if that's happening they probably aren't hashing it...
OH! That's also happened to me!
In other news
Whenever modrinth gets done approving it: https://modrinth.com/resourcepack/pufferchick
I already DMed it to him 😛
Is this the beginning of Casey's new Minecraft modding era?
Look how far you've come since Sponges
No, that's a different mod that's still under review
Oh you know this
Actually, the only thing that's holding you back from going 100% effort into Minecraft modding is probably your C# for Minecraft mods thing
(For the uninitiated: More of an "urgent" thing so I made it in Java, the rest are waiting for C# -> Java to be finished)
tbh if you make that, I might even get into minecraft modding a bit. I just have no interest in Java at all.
I try to only do coding that brings me some joy, and Java ain't it
(The other mod, available here when modrinth approves it: https://modrinth.com/mod/echo-of-death )
Do they have an ETA or anything?
(It's been in review for 39 hours and modrinth says it normally takes 24-48
)
No specific ETA beyond what I just said
remind Casey in 9 hours to hassle Modrinth
I love meanies, so for you lefauxmatt? absolutely (#6769236) (9h | <t:1752208791>)
Not even a "#XYZ in queue"
lol
Hopefully I'll be asleep at that point
Can you use kotlin for MC dev? Is there a kotlin to Java converter?
There are specific Kotlin libraries, yeah.
MC has a few mods that let you use any JVM language
Yeah. Kotlin is in fact one of them
Scala is another one. And Groovy is another.
Someone apparently did a rust mod
For Minecraft
I know Casey isn't interested but you might be
tbh isn't security theory leaning more and more towards passwords being a heavily flawed system anyway?
I barely remember the theory behind this but iirc passwords belong to the "knowledge" type of authentication, which is usually the weakest type
Yes, and that's why the latest wave of security is all about "passwordless"
Which mostly translates to a rotating password that you never actually know
(2fa is supposed to mean using methods from at least two types of authentication, but there's an issue with people doing things like password + security question, which are both just knowledge based)
Tbh ||I don't even play Minecraft||
I'm shocked, atra. shocked
Ally literally did that
I was so mad
i can't believe there is one game in this universe atra doesn't play
I get a maximum length of like 64 for storage purposes, but I've definitely seen places cap it at 12, which... no
Once you hash it, it shouldn't matter
Like, don't allow for anything that would strain bandwidth
But honestly I'd allow something crazy like 1024 even
This png is my password
anyway iirc the other types of auth are ownership (e.g. a device-bound authenticator app or a yubikey), location (yeah this one isn't great lmao), identity (biometrics, mostly), knowledge and maybe a couple more?
I'm still contemplating trying something Rust related for Stardew! Maybe even worse and throw in some C++ and Go on top.
true
now I want to see a website use the 3x3 pattern lock from phones
I wish I was smarter
I'm guessing there are size limits for what can be safely hashed within a certain length hash though?
You could do this exact thing way smoother than I could!
You should see the stupid I wrote today
(not for what can be hashed within a certain length hash full stop, ofc, because x => 1 is technically a hashing algorithm
)
aka "how to make the person reviewing your custom comparison code's eye twitch even though it technically works"
anyway my opinion on rust is that it sounds fun but I tried starting the rust book three times and got bored within one chapter in all of them
One of the traits of ADHD is having difficulty with refocusing, which can include hyperfocus, so possibly yes
Or finding (involuntarily) refocusing far too easy.
Okay! I'm about to ask reddit for financial advice
They are certainly good at giving financial advice.
(Note: Not good at giving good financial advice. Technical truth.)
Smh neither tmux or screen is available
Actually i might as well ask you guys
Money market accounts or short term treasuries
What do you guys like
Screen isn't available in red hat 8?
Oh my god what is :bw
In vim
Why do we have :bd and :bw
delete and weawy dewete
I feel like it has to be a lot to do that to you...
To be fair I have not been doing soldering lately
I remember back when wallstreetbets knew they were being stupid...
before gme
I just kind of assumed you regulated your caffeine intake by having an IV drip a measured amount directly into your bloodstream
True. I’ve honestly always wondered about that since by nature of the hash stuff, there are only an amount of combinations directly related to the length of it.
However since you can usually only use printable characters the practical value is probably increased compared to “any string”
I haven’t used screen since college days I think
Or whenever I last actually did stuff on a server
(Actual stuff = running things that needed to stay running essentially, like Minecraft server or online game test)
…I just realized I forgot to actually buy the games I left in my cart for the Steam sale
How tragic
I guess cat president 1/2, slormancer, and in stars and time will have to wait. (And whatever the other game was)
Yeah, this morning
Steam sure is loading slow (at least on my phone)
Doesn’t appear to be WiFi since Google loaded fine
(I still use screen entirely)
tmux gang (only at work where I ssh though, at home I just use kitty's built in tabs/splits)
I use screen for starting long lived processes that I want to detach but occasionally go back into
Team tmux here
And use it for places I probably should use systemd services instead
I've been copy pasting the same shell script for over a decade at this point
And migrating it to tmux isn't worth it because it just works™
Really what i want is a tiling windows manager
You have plenty of options. What's preventing you from having one?
Or is it locked down?
The only Linux device I have that has a display is my steam deck, and using a terminal with on screen keyboard isn't great so I ssh instead anyway
(The other game was anonymous;code, and no way I'm buying that at full price considering how much of a discount it was on. At least given current finances)
(I mean, I'm not buying any now that the sale is not on)
Steam will have more sales
In my fucking defense I'm on r/bogleheads
Bogleheads are passive investors who follow Jack Bogle's simple but powerful message to diversify with low-cost index funds and let compounding grow wealth. Jack founded Vanguard and pioneered indexed mutual funds. His work has since inspired others to get the most out of their long-term investments. Active managers want your money - our advice:...
I am asking people to support my stupid life choices but at least I'm asking the better investment subreddit
(I did assume you weren't in wallstreetbets, atra
you're far too smart for that)
(and use far too few slurs, for that matter)
Casey: hassle Modrinth (9h ago) [Requested by lefauxmatt]
Alas, still under review
this is upsetting
This is my Friday.
it is surprising cool here today
apparently it's 28 today but it's cloudy and windy and it certainly doesn't feel like 28, first day in a while we haven't had to turn the AC on
.wolfram 30.4 C in F
86.72 °F (degrees Fahrenheit)
.wolfram 28 C in F
82.4 °F (degrees Fahrenheit)
I was gonna make a joke about the outside temperature in FL but it's only 83 right now (feels like 89). Weird, why is it so low when it's summer
Idk but i for one am really enjoying not melting for once
It's 24°C here today, but sunny. It's quite nice!
24 is very nice
.wolfram 24 C in F
75.2 °F (degrees Fahrenheit)
Brb moving to quill's
Yeah that's decent with outside usually
I'm a great roomie
Inside? Too hot
"At work six days a week. Comes home and knits and sleeps"
I think 24 inside is nice too
"Only cooks once a week. Seems to be out of the house or asleep 95% of time."
You work 6 days a week?
Current temp of my rooms window AC.
(I don’t think it’s keeping up with that though, seeing as it feels colder at night)
.wolfram 68 F in C
20 °C (degrees Celsius)
(I didn't set it to that, it was like that when I got here, but my parents know I prefer it cold - the whole reason they got me a window AC was because I literally sweat year round otherwise)
(But it's comfy right now for example)
That's so cold wtf
I don't think it's actually keeping up during the day so it's quite comfy. It does get a bit cold at night, but at that point I have comfy blankie
hihi
Morning!!!
night!
Starving. You?
exhausted
it's been 30C all day again and the UK isn't equipped to deal with this
It's been 30c all day and TX is equipped to deal with this
Update: it skyrocketed in the evening and I think my arm is slightly sunburnt now
@ my fellow mathperson
Did you randomly measure things as a child because I did not
I was just considering DMing her about that 😛
Context: Girl has fun measuring things as a child
(And that's a mini-montage of her measuring like 5-6 different things, saying it's fun each time)
(Drawer, book, windowsill, shoe, coffee(?) thing, her dad's chair while he's sitting in it)
the coffee thing is a moka pot
The moka pot is a stove-top or electric coffee maker that brews coffee by passing hot water driven by vapor pressure and heat-driven gas expansion through ground coffee. Named after the Yemeni city of Mokha, it was popularized by Italian aluminum vendor Alfonso Bialetti and his son Renato starting from 1933. It quickly became one of the staples ...
Um, acktchually, the world isn't earth, and so the city of Mokha doesn't exist and so it wouldn't be called a moka pot
(I did assume it was a real thing. Interesting, and I see I was right about it being coffee and not tea or something)
Anyways fellow mathpeople
Did you measure things as a kid?
I did not
I was woefully bad at sizes
I'm not a mathpeople, but I did not. But I did organize unsorted containers of candy while waiting for my parents to check out
Tell you what if we get magic I'll try to become a math person
(If it's the type that needs calculations like this anime)
I didn't measure things, I took them apart
One of the questions I missed so badly in biology Olympiad was the scale of a red blood cell
(Yes, I know I have mentioned before my "modern science is basically magic" beliefs, but consider: vibes of a cool magic circle)
Like I have no inherent idea of size at that size
But yes
Take things apart
Study them
Get bonked on the head
I'm tired lollll
And then fail to put them back together because I inevitably dropped a loadbearing screw
Get a little plate for your screws
Saaaame, it is 4:20am and I've not slept
Tbh as an ee one thing that makes me saddddd
I have an iFixit kit now!
Is that pcbs are now so small they are typically below the size an amateur can handle
Nowadays
Yep
Okay I yawned I think I might actually be feeling sleepy at last
I shall beep
Goodnight!
Yeah! But I'm stronger than i think I am!
Have you considered not inviting suffering into your life (going to exercise)
I'm now doing pull ups with only 55lbs of assistance!!!!
My back really hurts too but I might just need a different mattress
Wooooo
Yeah I remember fussing at you about that
That was Tuesday!!!
I'm enjoying getting stronger and stronger
It's exciting
Ask your dad about it
...how long does it typically take to recover from blood donations?
I'm usually back up to normal within 2-4 days
Keep in mind the spleen stores extra red blood cells
Which is where these come from
Fully replacing them takes weeks
Another reason to needlessly advocate for less/no exercise, got it
Did not know this though. Is it enough to make up for the amount drawn during donation?
Doesn't your dad lift
Not sure. Let me see
I don't know what he does but he definitely does gym stuff
i only found one about percolators, which are somewhat different but look more or less the same. do you have a link to the moka pot one?
Decent amount but i thought they were like older and less good rbc marked for removal
Percholators and moja parts are not the same?
...am I understanding right that your spleen stores 25% of your blood, all the time?
they use the same steam method to force water through the tube, but in a moka the tube goes through the tamped coffee and the resulting coffee does not go back down into the boiling chamber
you get something much more like espresso (but not espresso. just strong coffee)
Thought we were still talking about spleen blood and became very confused when steam was mentioned
"steam inside your body seems like a big problem if you're not a titan from AoT"
Huhhhhh
I was not aware of this
I am not aware of a lot
Tbh I'm a heathen
The type of heathen that just drinks what's available
I prefer French press in my own kitchen but 95% of that has to do with cleaning
I would be surprised if 25% of someone's red blood cells hung out in the spleen
Especially if it is 25% of mature rbc
my daily driver is french press. i had a moka in a past life but i didn't use it enough and it won't work on my induction stove
I thought it was like....not great rbc marked for destruction
And could be called back into service if needed (say, after giving blood)
took a family vacation to italy a number of years ago and i got real good at using the moka pot that was in the house we stayed in
My daily driver is the fancy machine at work tbh
Wow, ichor remembers past lives. Fascinating, what eras did you live in???
I wouldn’t say this was a top hobby, no
The no arm exercise thing is usually like a day
Yeah, they let you exercise the third day

there are induction converters for mokas!
they're just metal disks with a handle
Suddenly I'm wondering if anyone has made a "small lego piece of an animal" tier list.
Probably, but I've never seen one
be the change you want to see in the world
The cat pieces would be on the "transcends tier lists" spot, with all the rest far beneath it
Frog can be slightly higher than the rest of the non-cats since the frogs are iconic
Those are just “we have cats at home” tier
are those even all lego
Yeah I think these are cheap from ali

The novel is over
and they all lived happily ever after
Maybe I should paste the novel I'm working on line by line into a random chatroom too
Aww I missed it
Something something I ain't reading all that I'm happy for you or sorry it happened
easiest way to get readers rite
You have to admit it was, at least, off topic
I didn't really read any of it other than watch it flood in and see it was not being typed and was automated or just being pasted in bulk
seemed very quick to be manually pasted
It started vaguely programming talking about the theory of computer science and GPS, but didn't stay there long
wow, clearly it was on topic here then, we should have kept it /s
Interestingly enough they were in a voice chat at the time
And also typing non-novel related stuff in one of the voice text chats
it seems they threatened to take their ramblings to programming-off-topic, and then made good on that threat
I don't know why that was removed, it was both programming and very off topic/jk

Apparently I bumped my room AC earlier and it went to fan mode
Temperature was 78 F when I figured it out
.wolfram 78 F in C
25.56 °C (degrees Celsius)
(for the metric chads)
one of said chads appreciate your service
25C is the normal indoors temp in my apt because it doesn’t have central air, only one window AC
My condolences
Where I am rn has no AC at all
I think it’s probably around 75-77F indoors but idk for sure

so uh idk who else knew this but you can essentially use the sed subtitute command in discord to edit your last message
like type a message and then s/[originalWord]/[newWord] as your next message and it will find and replace the word in your previous message
Ah yeah that’s been a thing for ages
but why

Has to be lower S I think?
Is that case sensitivity?

Oh it normally does the first only? Huh
Its case sensitive

let's try
Oh it do
it does

Mom and I did 16km on the 4th of July in TX
What about 17 miles
Possible! Bring water and good shoes
The campers want to walk 17 miles tomorrow and it’s going to be a scorcher (I will be on an airplane)
.wolfram 16km in miles
We didnt bring food like dumbasses so
9.942 miles
There will certainly be much water
The campers can do what they want tbh
God I used to love that song so much
Ooh, a reference you got!
Yes but if they get heatstroke we have to pick them up and take them to urgent care
It’s our duty

I've been doing the Gabriella dance in my bedroom ever since the song dropped it's such a bop
Yeahhhhhhh
Do they have the gear for it?
Still
Water tbh
And i think that sidewalk is a worse surface than trail for 17 miles
Yeah we have lots
They will be mandated to take water

There are loading messages?
(Comment brought to you by the person who never intentionally restarts their computer)
I don't either, but I have to refresh Discord's tab at least to avoid it eating several GB
those loading messages last like 3 milliseconds I've never read them

i know about induction converter plates but i dislike them
had a brainwave yesterday while tinkering with source generation and I realized that using a template engine for sourcegen is a really good idea.
I know the compiler doesn't let you do regular file io, but you can embed files directly in assemblies and it might let me read from that
otherwise I have to embed the templates as const strings which is less convenient
You can't read normal files with sourcegen?
I can't recall how my mixins worked then
I don't have the attention span right now to remember/decipher how I did it, but here it was:
https://gist.github.com/spacechase0/94670a81d823d9cbf5d395648ec81f48#file-spacesharedgen-mixingenerator-cs
Includes my testing examples
(This was before incremental sourcegen existed, unsure what differences there would be now)
I don't see it doing any file reads, although it is doing logging which is supposed to be against the rules for sourcegen
New local pizza place is offering free pizza
oh it's not doing actual logging, it's logging into a source file
Tasty. Now I want pizza.
(My dad already cooked a frozen pizza for dinner. Still, not enough)
Yeah I like code crimes
it has a specific thing for attribute flagging now which is much simpler to use and also way more efficient. not sure what other differences would be involved but there is that
I love doing things in ways they aren't meant to be done, it's fun
it's less annoying than writing a separate analyzer, that's for certain
Yeah I just can't recall how it actually gets the original mixin data then. But clearly it does somehow, which might be good enough for your purposes
Sorry 😦
I'll get pizza in your name
Some people might not like to hear this, but sometimes console debugging is easier and quicker than a full on debugger
I'm not mailing it to you mind
I'm not too surprised given how extremely common that sort of mixin is
I once had an idea for autogenerated MP-supporting classes from SP ones (to some extent) using source generators. The SP ones would be marked as "additional source gen file" or something, not actually compiled into final assembly.
(Specifically regarding a new game project, not for modding. This is #programmers-off-topic after all)
How is the game project?
Last commit was in october
Technically do have some new notes in my todo from a couple commits the past few months
Mainly about switching which ECS is used, and a potential way to do lighting type stuff
It was a thing in IRC culture to use sed notation to edit a message as you couldn't actually edit messages and was common for channels to have a sed bot detect it and resend the message with the edit applied
Also stuff that can't properly be tested with breakpoint debugging as it changes timing characteristics
breakpoint debuggers interrupt flow in seconds/minutes, console / file io is in the microseconds
Spoken like a guy who hasn't caused themselves no end of trouble with 4gb log files
atra did you cause the trouble, or did a 32-bit size_t cause it
Nah I filled a drive 😛
I had to build my own log parser for smapi because profiler made logs that big
Profiler after all does it all via console logging and not via an attached debugger
One of the subtle things I hate about verilog
Special type names
real is a double
time is a long
I have to look this up
I figured it out, it's using the compilation context, which I guess includes some form of reflection/metadata access to any existing assemblies that are being built against
Very cool but not useful for what I'm doing
I vaguely recall that now that you mention it
RIP
I really feel like it should be possible indirectly though, at least for input. Like, if you right click and go to properties in Vs, I know I’ve seen a. “Source gen additional input” thing or something (like what I mentioned earlier with using it for SP -> MP)
You can do that! But it's for files in the source being compiled, not for files included with the source generator itself
Hence why I'm trying resource embedding
This seems like a confusing question but...
How does one facilitate the process of writing data with a specified endianess?
I can see that SDL does it with SDL_RWops (now as SDL_IOStream), it allows for reading and writing data to a file in either big or little endian.
I can see that SDL has a function for swapping endianess but uhm...
I'm not trying to write inline assembly in the library I'm making.
always
I'm guessing the reason they do it via inline assembly is to take advantage of a processor instruction made exactly for this? which does sound pretty nice if you can literally copy the assembly they used
yup, BSWAP is an x86 instruction (this is so unbelievably not my area of expertise lmao)
then again, using this would probably make your library x86 only if it isn't already
what language are you using?
with the standard library. No other dependencies but that.
You don't want to use htons and friends i suppose?
apparently this compiles to BSWAP for appropriate processors!
(GCC bug seems to have been fixed now)
I actually didn't know about that but I did find the documentation for it in winsock.h , searching for it out of curiosity.
I think I'll try this first before going platform dependent.
Thank you both for your help
oh right what happened to that gigantic fanfiction that was posted here
ah it got removed
a shame
damn.
I'm so upset I didn't get to read it

btw I've been looking into how one would host a nodejs website and I'm only now truly realizing just how extremely Cloud focused it all is
it's all shit like how to deploy to vercel
the only one you really need vercel for is next
not just like. How do I set up a proper environment locally to host it
what framework
sveltekit
use adapter-node
for legal reasons cloud providers simply are not allowed
I did see that but I don't really know where to beyond this
no idea
all the guides from azure devops themselves are with Azure App Service but that's their cloud hosting shit
if static https://github.com/geoffrich/svelte-adapter-azure-swa may work
ah
this is for work
cloud is entirely off the table
I'm technically still on holiday but this is gonna come up soon
there's folks in the company I can go to but I don't want to go into those conversations uninformed
i see
for C# it was no issue at all
that took like 1 google search and I had everything I needed to know to set up a self hosted asp.net core server
but for node that's seemingly very different
closest is docker but unfortunately this will be running on a windows server and docker is far from ideal on windows
if only it were a linux server I'd pretty much already know exactly what to do
is docker here for convenience with dependencies or for isolation
if you have a self hosted runner on the server that you want to run it on, you can just copy from the runners folder to your deploy folder and restart a systemd service, or have containers running on the machine
systemd on a window server is going to be tough
I wish I had systemd
At the end of the day, Azure pipelines is just "run these logical steps in this order" and you can do arbitrary powershell if its a windows box
you could write the guide!
I'd want to be a lot more knowledgeable on this to write a guide
Step 1 is figure out how to get it manually deployed to your server
step 2 is making azure devops do it
trying to conflate them as one step is doing it in hard mode
the asp.net core one just runs through IIS which was very straightforward and handy cause it needs to run through a service account
fair enough
thankfully they gave me access to the server directly temporarily
Even with step1 and maybe step2 as well, I would split it also into First deployment vs Incremental deployment
here's hoping the other folks in the company with experience with this have the time to help with the setup
ssl certificates and the likes as well
though that's part IT
I did not go get free pizza

If I had to list my favorite tv series it would be in the top 3 I think
The other two being Over the Garden Wall & Gravity Falls
My top couple are the owl house, and then netflix she-ra
not sure about anime because it's all fantasy stuff that melds into one corner of my brain
I rank anime separately since it's kinda a whole other thing
Yeah, me too.
But also, like since 95% of what I watch is generic fantasy I have a harder time differentiating them a while after the fact
Take out recency bias and I'm not left with much 😛
Top 3 would be mush-shi, soul eater, and uhhhhhhh bna maybe? I dunno most of it is fun but mediocre
I usually like studio trigger's work though
I'm not aware of any of those (unless that last one was meant to be bnha not bna)
Brand New Animal
Yep, never heard of it
I'm surprised you haven't heard of soul eater, it's a very popular classic anime
I was really hyped about bna's remaining ep when 1-6 dropped
Alas it was very Trigger Anime bingo card ending
I would say "besides involving eating souls" but given how misleading titles can be sometimes...
Minus going to space I don't think they did that one
Is Trigger the one-
Yeah the ending was weird and confusing
Yeah
I was about to ask if Trigger was the one everyone says they always go to space at the end
No that does happen
No matter the project
The animation and chara designs are still really good tho
Yeah those are definitely strong points of trigger
I think aside from the endings their writing is also usually pretty good
Yeah they did the adaption
I remember watching kill la kill ages ago
Oh I didn't realize trigger did dungeon meshi
And darling in the franxx.
You can be assured that no one goes to space at the end in that one
I've been meaning to watch little witch academia for a while but never have
Yet ™
(I mean probably not especially since they didn't write it, but for anime onlies like myself it could still be? 😛 )
I haven't finished it yet but I should. What I saw of it was good
I read the manga they didn't

Yes
I've seen some vague spoilers and assumed it didn't
Plus... very typical medieval ish fantasy world, so it was doubtful anyways
Wren if u like mushishi i recommend mononoke
Mononoke is a spin-off of the Bakeneko story arc of Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror. It follows the Medicine Seller as he deals with various spirits or "Mononoke" in feudal Japan. Just like in the Bakeneko story, he combats with a series of tools and his vast knowledge of the supernatural on his side, but can only slay the Mononoke when he unc...
All the ghibli films I haven't yet seen are on my list!
I haven't seen anything ghibli I think
I gotta watch the new movie at some point
Mononoke specifically had a midnight showing at a local theater that I was going to go to, but I ended up not seeing it because I had to get up early the day after
My "anime to watch" list that I compiled pre-moving is 98 lines long (and I think a few of those are links to recommendations to consider), so....
And let's not look at my "books to read" list
I know ghibli has a Reputation for being associated with the uwu wholesome cozy crowd, but I don't think it's earned
Their movies are genuinely very good, especially the ones with more grounded elements like The Wind Rises or The Boy and the Heron
(Okay the books one is "just" 54...)
And this is ignoring non-anime, non-book (like web comics or manga), games, minecraf tmodpacks, ...
steam games I bought (ie. not from a bundle) but never played...
So much to do, so little time
Even when I have the time I don't always have the drive thanks to ✨ mental health ✨
(Let's also not look at how many series I'm following on webtoon right now, even if I've mentioned it before)
I would say it's the curse of mortality but the true irony is that no matter how much time and will that you have, there will always be more than you can take in
At least in the modern age, yeah
It's not even counting stuff I want to re-watch or re-read or re-play
It's a tragedy
I would say "can I get parallel channels of multiple things streamed into my brain at once", but then I don't to have fun enjoying it
I need to split my consciousness for it and merge them together to regain the memories each time something is finished
I knew a person who watches anime at 2.5x speed
Can't do that with books (since audiobooks Will Not Work for me)
(although my brain kinda does that already depending on the book)
i watch yt at 2x so 2.5x for anime isnt too crazy
I think i get a lot of anime backlog out of the way by being on a plane and seeing that it's in the entertainment options
Finally watched the girl who lept through time (it was good)
I've never seen anime on the plane entertainment systems
You know I'm doubtful they do domestic US flights
I also watched your name before that had a NA release via this (it was ok)
<insert joke about wondering how you would've known my username before I announced it here>
I also watched this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermae_Romae_(film)?wprov=sfla1
I read the manga b4 and it's a pretty good adaption
Shocked that the main actor who played a roman character is japanese and not foreigner/mixed
@rain apex hello im in the off topic zone
i wanted to move some projects from my personal github to my professional github (the one i feel comfortable showing to people in the real world like, yknow, interviewers and whatnot)
but i also didnt want to spam up my account with a ton of little repos
so i also wanted to put them into a mono repo
but i also wanted to keep the git history of each individual repo, just, inside the now monorepo
but also change the authors on all the commits
and i dont know how to do any of this
Pathos merged mine
I forgot how but involved downloading a random python script off the internet
oh fun
@dreamy vigil might be willing to help
I imagine Pathos probably wrote the one he used for my repo himself
oh no
Oh, congrats on graduating to 9th grade atra
what the fuck happened to my name
Congratulations on trans cotten candy colors!
You're officially doing high school physics now
I didn't notice that connection before. Headcanon accepted
oh im slitherlegs
This is me doing the repo merge and mildly dying three years ago
I've never been the same since
did your repo merge also involve changing the author atra? i assumed just amending the commits would also change its like, commit date
You know, since it would be a local repo at first
No, did not change the author
I wonder if there's somewhere in .git you could change the author thing without the date
God i miss the days when people thought I was smart
Merging multiple repos into a monorepo is pretty straightforward; changing the authors (without changing the date) would involve using something like git filter-branch. You could try it and see how it looks; if something goes wrong, you can just reset to the head and try it again.
God i miss the days when I thought i was smart
Ah, the "gifted student" days.
is there a "for dummies" explanation of whaty "reset to the head" even means, actually, bc my Git knowledge is not all that great actually it basically just amounts to committing, pulling, and branching
Don't worry! You'll graduate high school physics soon.
HEAD is just alias for one of the commits
If u do git log u can see which one's head rn
(You are smart!!!)
I forgor the exact definition but when u pull u fast forward the HEAD
