Maybe Durham did well because it's a college town

#

But I've never seen anyone fuck it up

tranquil grove
#

people will fuck up straight roads too, so I try not to blame roundabouts for that in particular SDVpufferdizzy
people regularly cut me off on turns by driving in the bike lane, directly across from a grade school

quick hare
#

At least with the screwed up exit ramps in the touristy area, I can see why people are confused. Someone decided to briefly switch which side of the road you drive on and then have us all cross back over into the right lane later.

quick hare
#

It’s divergent alright

devout vault
#

(At least from my understanding)

cinder karma
devout vault
#

...at least in tallahassee, where they often didn't exist

cinder karma
#

Khloe can I put these in Cities?

quick hare
#

Yep that. I hate that.

tranquil grove
#

as a kid I was just scared to use them and biked on the sidewalk anyway

devout vault
#

(And the main one I recall is on a road where the speed limit was 45 mph. No, not a highway)

cinder karma
#

We love diverging diamonds because they fix the left turn BS

devout vault
#

(3 lanes per direction, too)

#

(Car lanes, just the one bike lane on the edge of course)

cinder karma
#

Tbh I recently took the wrong ramp and ended up in a toll road so

tranquil grove
#

so probably

#

(possibly a mod thing)

cinder karma
#

Khloe can I build chongqing in cities

#

And if I do will my computer cry

#

Can I do subways

#

I love subways

#

God

#

I miss beijing subways

#

Like if I could get a job in China I would consider it.

tranquil grove
#

play SimCity original and you can just replace all roads with train tracks
if no roads exist, people will just use them interchangeably with zero complaints
(but if a tile of road exists, they complain they can't reach anything)

#

tbf the trains in that are really slow & look like trolleys & have no stations, so it kinda makes sense

worn remnant
tranquil grove
#

I heard about it somewhere when I was a kid playing it on snes, so it was probably in a prima guide or something SDVkrobusgiggle

rain apex
#

we should have more monorails i like them

rain apex
#

no opinions about practicality they just be neat

#

why did the first guy become asymetric

#

banish him

cinder karma
#

I want subways

tranquil grove
#

anything I can just walk onto and get within 10 minutes of my goal, I'm happy with

cinder karma
#

Chue can I build chongqing in cities skylines

rain apex
#

idk does it have a Z axis?

#

u can build shenzhen tho shenzhen ez mode

#

it is just big bay with a bunch of 🏢

cinder karma
#

Shenzhen boring

#

I want chongqing

devout vault
rain apex
#

no thats chengdu

tranquil grove
#

apparently Cities does have "metros" that are like, a station that goes into an underground tunnel immediately

cinder karma
#

Chue if I can't go up 14 stories into the subways attached mall and get the spiciest cold noodles known to man I don't want it

#

....can I do Chicago

#

The elevated subway

devout vault
#

See, a lot of these things are probably possible with mods. CS1 has a decently sized modding community from what I understand

tranquil grove
#

might be a mod? but it looks like yes

#

and yeah, modding seems fairly prominent

devout vault
tranquil grove
#

chicago just naturally has elder scrolls: oblivion grass

cinder karma
#

What are you guys talking about. That's the view outside Casey's apartment right?

tranquil grove
#

my condolenses to anyone who lives that close SDVpufferdizzy

devout vault
cinder karma

I remember a river view

devout vault
#

I heard it while typing that message

devout vault
#

The sound isn't that bad compared to what I was worried about moving here, but I'm also on floor 17

tranquil grove
#

I have family in town and they almost took a place like, on the far side of a building next to it, but yeah

cinder karma
#

Also these

#

Both of you

#

Please explain

devout vault
#

The b e a n

cinder karma
#

Please

devout vault
#

The other I dunno

#

I've never seen either in person

tranquil grove
#

chicago has a metal bean for some reason, that's it

#

or maybe that's a different large shiny art piece, I don't remember exactly

devout vault
#

It's technically called Cloud Gate, for some bizarre reason

tranquil grove
#

yeah SDVkrobusgiggle I forgot the exact details but knew they were mad and people don't care

#

right, yeah

devout vault
tranquil grove
#

did that person also patent the color vantablack or whatever? something like that

devout vault
#

Is that the same person???????????????

tranquil grove
#

I thought so, but it's twitter gossip I half-caught a while back

devout vault
#

Oh wow, it is

tranquil grove
#

yeah, Anish Kapoor, exclusive rights to use that color in art

rain apex
#

theres a cool elephant in toronto

#

idk who made it or why

cinder karma
#

Don't y'all live there

#

Did you not do a tourism

rain apex
#

no

devout vault
cinder karma
#

I did a tourism in Dallas fucking Texas

rain apex
#

i just find coffee shops i havent been to every weekend

#

ran out like a year ago

tranquil grove
#

I didn't parse the text until deciding that looks like an elephant SDVpufferowo

cinder karma
tranquil grove

(subconscious bias or something tho)

rain apex
#

its more elephanty this angle perhaps

cinder karma
#

I made it a point to explore the city on foot

rain apex
#

the ears

devout vault
tranquil grove
#

ah, yeah, the ears aren't quite clear from the side

cinder karma
#

Usually when I'm in a new city I'll walk around everywhere

devout vault
#

The places I've visited include therapists/doctors, work, and a couple cafes I solely visited to meet with a friend

tranquil grove
#

also I haven't really walked around chicago much, just spent a lot of time at Navy Pier/etc as a kid

rain apex
#

rn its bolbonfire outside

cinder karma
#

I regret not being able to stay more in San Francisco

devout vault
#

Oh and I guess an AMC for the minecraft movie (with the same friend)

cinder karma
#

It's required

#

I did a tourism in Chicago, lol

tranquil grove
#

I'm pretty literally a shutin SDVpetcatangy I only do outdoorsy/social things when bullied into it

devout vault
cinder karma
tranquil grove
#

(I do like walks and such, but chicago's not close enough to do it there much SDVkrobusgiggle)

i used to be indoors but

#

now that i actually go to the office

cinder karma

We'll be your pocket friends

rain apex

i need not a not me house location to work now

cinder karma

I can't do indoors only

#

Even in the pandemic I went running outdoors

rain apex

cinder karma

My friend says I should visit corning new york

#

But also like

#

I'm traveled out

#

Somehow I have to pull off a trip to China and a trip to Europe 😦

#

Preferably without having to pay for air tickets myself

worn remnant
#

is your friend in corning? i wouldn't go without a person to visit

cinder karma
#

My friend is not in corning

#

But i have a lot of friends in the area

#

(Boston, nyc, upstate ny)

#

And glassblowing is somewhat special to us

worn remnant
#

i heard (20 years ago) the museum of glass is nice but i wouldn't make a trip to corning just for that

cinder karma
#

(My friend is moving to Europe, and I am under orders to swing a bloody trip to Europe.)

cinder karma

I regret not going to see the chocolate in San Francisco but i didn't have time

tranquil grove
#

(lol, it's so hard to see this mini dog park from Maps)
(but they get to have king-of-the-hill battles over that little thing in the middle)

cinder karma
#

D'awwwwww

#

I miss having a dog

tranquil grove
#

same, it's been a while

devout vault
#

I miss having a cat

tranquil grove
#

my sibling has multiple and I don't envy them SDVpuffersquee but I did really love mine growing up

#

(one of them jumped off the roof recently) (and was fine, but still)

devout vault
#

And yet you want a dog, which is inferior to a cat. SDVPufferThink

devout vault
cinder karma
#

I want a pet that will go jogging with me

devout vault
#

I've seen people train cats for that.

It's usually the cat riding on the person's shoulder, but still

#

Esca why did you puffergasp, did you expect anything else given my username

tranquil grove
#

my parents were the "lets cats do whatever" type growing up, but the one I knew was extremely good & just kinda followed them for several blocks on walks

tranquil grove
devout vault
#

The people who "let cats do whatever" is a big reason why people don't expect cats to be affectionate to begin with

#

(Not you necessarily, just a bit of an annoyance)

tranquil grove
#

yeah, I'm not a fan of just letting them wander the neighborhood (my neighbor's cat practically lives outside), ours was just unusually chill and also never left sight of the family

cinder karma
#

Tbh I also want a farm in the middle of nowhere

sand frost

devout vault
cinder karma
#

Classical! What tourism should I do in the northeast if I ever manage to go there

#

I've been blackmailed into a Europe trip first though

#

So it won't be for at least a year

#

I know at least one ice cream place to visit

sand frost
#

Do you like small towns? Big cities? Good food?

#

I enjoy Burlington VT but it is a bit touristy sometimes I think??

#

I’ve never been to cape cod but I hear it’s nice

cinder karma
#

I like hiking and visiting friends

#

That's about it

sand frost
#

I really can’t help you with the 2nd one lol

cinder karma
#

Or musems

#

Lol haha

sand frost
#

But there’s Katadihn in Maine

#

Well, other than the obvious help

cinder karma
#

Yeah, no, my cousin is in NYC

#

Gotta visit that

sand frost
#

NYC has a tofu place I like

#

They make dofuhua

#

With nice toppings

#

It’s called Fong On, there’s a cute YouTube video about it

cinder karma
#

How have you been?

sand frost
#

NYC has great museums, the natural history museum is my favorite of the big ones

cinder karma
#

There is a new katseye songggggg

sand frost
#

I’ve been alright! Gearing up to move, which I hate even though it’s within the same apartment complex

cinder karma
#

Nice! Bigger apartment?

sand frost
#

My robot keeps breaking but I keep fixing the problems

#

Yup, turns out 2 people desire more space than 1 person

cinder karma
#

Tbh I've been looking at the falling Dallas house prices and going....maybe

#

Maybe

sand frost
#

I liked the transit museum in NYC

#

it’s an abandoned subway stop

#

So on the lower level they have a couple dozen train cars from various eras

cinder karma
#

(Financially I'm in a good position to buy.)

sand frost
#

Fingers crossed they fall in a good way for you!!

#

There’s some nice hiking in the Catskills

#

Lemme see if I can find the hike I went on once

devout vault
tranquil grove
#

I knew the name but not that they were in NY until now SDVpufferthink

devout vault

I didn't know it was NY

#

Until you just mentioned it

#

I literally just remembered the mountain name 😛

tranquil grove

SDVpuffersquee going by context and that wiki link

I didn't click the link and saw no embed

It’s cause I hid the embed by habit lol

Arcadia maybe

#

Bit far north tbh

sand frost
#

There’s also always the mt Washington area in NH

#

Yeah I only rec Acadia for a long weekend out of Boston

#

It’s a long drive so it’s not super worth it for less time

cinder karma
#

Yeahhhhh

sand frost
#

We did go on a short weekend once and it was a nice trip but like 80% car

cinder karma
#

Tbh i was driving home from knit night Sunday and was like

When did I get a social life

tranquil grove
sand frost

The heck is that weird lake

devout vault
sand frost

I went on a long hike here once and enjoyed it

tranquil grove
sand frost

Best in summer

If it’s a reservoir would it be that big?

#

Ohhh maybe it’s lake Champlain

tranquil grove
#

oh, yeah, probably

sand frost
#

And the weird st Lawrence river is mini Great Lakes

tranquil grove

the scale's off but that's cartography

sand frost
#

Old cartography, anyways!

cinder karma
#

Someone go find the YouTube video on Minnesota'a shape

devout vault
tranquil grove
#

all I know about minnesota's shape is that it includes this nature preserve that's very clearly in canada

devout vault
devout vault
#

Thank you, was just about to go on a google journey

tranquil grove

oh, it is about the canada bit

cinder karma

We're friends still right???

I'll smuggle in some better than bullion

devout vault
cinder karma
#

We're friends still. Right?

#

Sorry about the jet upside down in Toronto

#

To be fair y'all nearly landed on a taxiway in San Francisco

#

(Or was that LAX)

#

(To be fair, weird map shit like this isn't actually funny is only okay because it's between two friendly countries)

#

Same way there is a light house that is technically contested between Canada and the US

devout vault
#

Invented by Big Cartography to sell more maps

cinder karma
#

Anyway

#

What else is a scam

#

Exercise, nuclear fusion

#

Iron

devout vault

Vegetables

tranquil grove
#

which ig is a scam in that you'd have to somehow upkeep this

worn remnant
#

well, they aren't in service anymore is probably the main reason

tranquil grove

yeah, it just seems extremely hazardous to leave up to whoever

devout vault
#

On the second episode - Grian is talking about not knowing how to make minecarts move since there aren't powered rails?

Hello, minecart boosters?? This guy is a total imposter, smh

cinder karma
#

I need a list of things casey considers a scam

worn remnant
tranquil grove
#

though iirc I was originally worried because one is like, in the middle of a bay in Washington or some such, high traffic

devout vault
#

Add that to the list

cinder karma
#

Ooh it looks like my gym us running a promotion

worn remnant
#

it would be extremely cool to have a lighthouse to live in, or even visit, but also wildly impractical and expensive, so

devout vault
cinder karma
#

What about instead retrofitting a school bus to live in

tranquil grove
#

I've seen some extremely old historical ones that just build on coastal rock outcrops instead, for lack of seafloor construction tricks

#

handy to have the light way out in the water instead of at the shore (and/or behind the rocks)

devout vault
#

I guess more like "we have a trailer at home"

cinder karma
#

I also would like to take a ride on the rotating ship

#

Anyways

#

The trailer would also like

#

Lack AC

#

Anyways

tbh I don't remember all that much from grians evo except (idk if you really care about spoilers but might be nice bc there's lore?) ||big snow base, grian has a cult-like summoning ritual for the YouTuber tauris, he also starts hermitcrsft 6 right at the end so despite claiming they'll coexist he ends his evo weirdly quick||

#

for a series I last watched about 5 years ago I'm impressed at my memory for it

devout vault
#

Since there seems to be lore stuff (if ||the bedrock mountain side + "we are watching"|| is any indication, only through episode two so far) I do think I'd rather avoid spoilers, but what MC version do they end up going through?

lethal walrus
#

I have 1.8 in my head but I'm not sure

devout vault
#

1.8 beta or release? I assume the latter based on the episode count

lethal walrus
#

Release

#

Definitely past release 1.0 though

#

That bedrock in the mountain will be a recurring character

devout vault
#

I guessed as much just from some vague mention about ||watchers|| when people were theorizing about evo for the life series teaser

lethal walrus
#

yeah that's the ||watcher symbol I think?|| it appears around ||a version change iirc||

grave meteor
#

can I please have some advice SDVpufferwaaah

#

What are good projects to have on your github, as of rn I just have some simple python stuff for graphing 3d and 2d complex numbers alongside some java applications

cinder karma
#

"Looking to add a bitcoin fund to your portfolio" no, I wasn't, actually

crystal wren
#

I have had some weirdly good impressions from my mod projects, but other than that...

grave meteor
#

My degree is in math and working on my MS in data science and I just quit my job so having a solid github with my degrees is a must

grave meteor
rain apex
#

What r u trying to get hired for

crystal wren
#

That's the important question!

grave meteor
#

data analysis, statistics anything

#

literally anything SDVpufferwaaah

cinder karma
#

You don't need a good github but it is a plus

rain apex
#

Idk go write a postgres extension or something it'll be fun

grave meteor
#

With how competitive the job market is and my lack of experience yes I need it

rain apex
#

Assuming u r not getting hired to do Oracle at least

grave meteor
#

I just quit my education job at a startup and want a real job lmfao

cinder karma
#

How much more time do you have in your masters

grave meteor
#

1 year

#

the prob applying for phd

cinder karma
#

And you're not US based which is good here

grave meteor
#

I am us based

cinder karma
#

Yeah, it'll be a lot easier once you have your masters

rain apex
#

What if u just skip to apply for phd

cinder karma
#

Oh god. Okay

#

PhD in US is...well

rain apex
#

I went directly to work after bachelors and then never looked back

grave meteor
#

hes on his 3rd paper this year

rain apex
#

Well can u just go

#

But u should write some fun things anyways cus it's fun Dokkan

grave meteor
#

for context im 20 I need the extra masters year for just time and growth in general

grave meteor
cinder karma
#

So the way I see it is

crystal wren
#

I suppose, from my naive perspective as far as the projects go... just do projects that are the kind of thing you would be doing in whichever field you want to be hired in.

cinder karma
#
  1. You will get your masters in a year
rain apex
#

Honestly I'm kinda confused about what you want now, besides the general field

grave meteor
#

better github projects

rain apex
#

If you want money then escape academia yea

cinder karma
#

That is significantly more useful to employment than anything you can write in a year

#

Period.

grave meteor
#

I wouldnt do a phd if I wasnt going to finish it at 24

cinder karma
#

For the github - do what is fun

grave meteor
#

but thats when people end their MS degrees in the states so its like I can have a phd by then why not

rain apex
#

I don't really think gh helps in specific direction besides just generally show you enjoying the code

#

Do something relevant to ur field if u want, since it's probably something the interviewer understand and appreciate more

#

But i also showed ppl my modding code in C# even tho it's a C++ position so

grave meteor
#

Im planning to maybe write some code to do predictive models for golfing outcomes but imbeing LAZY

rain apex
#

Sounds like a plan then

grave meteor
#

My dads been wanting it for sportsbetting LMFAO

rain apex
#

Hey that's a good story for interview too

#

Go for it wew

grave meteor
#

im an alternative girly im so scared for interviewing i bought a wig

rain apex
#

Yeah shame u missed the remote times

grave meteor
#

it just depends where at least around me

rain apex
#

What if u show up in the cool wizard robe

#

The urple one

grave meteor
#

I dont think i can I spent two hours doing my linkedin pics yesterday

rain apex
#

My linkedin still says im in skool

grave meteor
#

I finally updated mine I took eons to edit the photos

#

I did my makeup 😭

rain apex
#

(sometimes i get dissonance between u and ur pfp being sketchy faces)

grave meteor
#

thats my bfs doodle version of me

#

that pic is titled like the army of shroom or smth

cinder karma
#

Anyways. My general impression is that unless your open source project really blows up its more to show passion than anything else.

grave meteor
#

I dont have a degree with a focus on coding I just want jobs to know I can indeed code

cinder karma
#

which is good!

#

so write literally anything. maintain it for a while.

#

it can be literally anything in any language

#

bonus points if you're not the only user

grave meteor
#

I have java and python atm Ialso used some javaFX stuff

pliant snow
#

yeah, employers are just going to glance through it, so I would focus more on it having good docs, well structured both program and directory-wise, well written commit messages

#

then have projects of the language you want to convey you know, but also not things that are just trivial projects

crystal wren
#

The most important thing is a portfolio site with an Ecco text generator though, right?

cinder karma
#

Tbh I did not show my employer my stardew mods

grave meteor
#

From my inquiries about PhD students with job offers they seem to be more interested in the coding aspect

safe dragon
#

I have no portfolio nor ever needed one really

grave meteor
#

What is your degree in if I may

safe dragon
#

bachelor in comp sci

grave meteor
#

I think that's the key diff

#

I find it hard for people to understand what I do with my time as a math degree

dusty pollen
#

honestly I think people were equally confused about both halves of my degree SBVLmaoDog (maths & cs, it means I did the "pure" part of both subjects and dropped the "applied" part)

safe dragon
#

you only did the part I disliked

grave meteor
#

I was thinking about taking some inspo from a classmate and doing some number theory stuff. I really wanna see what I can do w other things tho

#

I really like real analysis but im not good at it and struggle if I could mix that and coding id be really happy

sand frost
# grave meteor What are good projects to have on your github, as of rn I just have some simple ...

I'm no expert, as I went into academia, but personally I would prioritize work that demonstrates your interests and strengths. I imagine people may glance through it to see:

  • Do you use awful bonkers customs?
  • Are you capable of organizing a project in a reasonable way?
  • Are you decently capable of pushing/pulling/maybe even PRing?
Since it sounds like you have a stronger focus on math than most CS people, it would make sense imo to do projects related to math you enjoy.
sand frost
#

My brothers, who are in CS, mention that in the workplace they regularly encounter people who don't really know how to push/pull

grave meteor
#

I can push and pull easily, I lead projects using github as a base repo. My commits are detailed and show what they are doing. I have clean code my README's and annotations need work

crystal wren
#

I also keep hearing that, and it;'s just crazy to me.

sand frost
grave meteor
#

yes literally I have profs that are funded and those want to work w me

sand frost
#

For the PhD, my advice is you must enjoy research in your field or it will be a miserable time

#

If you're in math, 4 years is optimistic, fwiw

grave meteor
#

I already know exactly what I want to do

sand frost
#

6 years is typical, even for good students

grave meteor
#

I have 2 years of courses already done so

#

im banking on 3 years and I have already done the research talked to many people etc im all set with that

sand frost
#

The research often takes time, independent of coursework, but if you go into a program where they let you substitute quals with coursework then maybe

#

In my observation of my many phd-having math friends, sometimes the proofs just struggle

grave meteor
#

I have an advisor lined up who does applied and theoretical in my field of interest so I can also lean more applied if proofs are an issue

a recent video that really helped my understanding of electricity was starting with questions, giving some multiple choice options, gives some other info as context, and then does a good experiment demonstrating it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AXv49dDQJw

In this video, I measure a wave of electricity traveling down a wire, and answer the question - how does electricity know where to go? How does "electricity" "decide" where electrons should be moving in wires, and how long does that process take? Spoiler alert - very fast!

I've been very excited about this project for a while - it was a lot of ...

electricity was always a big one for me because the “single ball in a pipe” metaphor that we tend to be taught with is very flawed when it comes to understanding things like why voltage in series is split evenly between components (how does the ball “know” that there are more components down the pipe?)

#

it works better when you think of it as a pipe full of electrons that are then all pushing each other, so if a later electron experiences resistance down the pipe, it will impact precious ones too, so energy is transferred not from individual electrons but from all of them pushing together against all the components (which is my layman understanding but atra can correct me when they see this SDVpuffersquee)

There is a really interesting theory about this though!

Basically, the reason younger millenials and older gen z have much higher rates of literacy than previous generations may very well be a result of the internet being mostly text based at the time, so we spent much more time practicing reading and writing than any other generation.

But as the internet got more advanced, voice and video communication became more common again, and that's less of a requirement now! Combine that with a pandemic seriously hampering kids' access to school and it's very possible this isn't a trend but a blip.

(and if you look at the chart you sent, the peak is indeed exactly in those years of the internet!)

water is so good

devout vault
#

Like, in general?

dusty pollen
#

I used to be a water hater but then like a year ago my brain did the adhd thing and decided overnight that fizzy drinks are bad and water is good

devout vault
#

Cold water is nice, but it has to be really cold for me to like it 😛

And at least somewhat cold for me to even drink it

#

I still like carbonation, only stopped a while back because money

#

Occasionally when I order food I'll get a sprite

#

But 95%+ of the time, I'm just drinking water that has been refrigerated over night

dusty pollen
#

there’s just something good about drinking water yknow

devout vault
#

Yeah. For lack of a better word it just feels "clean"

dusty pollen

refreshing

#

glug

devout vault
#

Flavor is still boring though, which is why I still get chocolate milk / apple juice regularly 😛

#

But the lack of flavor is part of why it is good I think

dusty pollen
#

it’s what contributes to the glug

devout vault
#

I can chocolate milk, and especially apple juice, but because those aren't unlimited so I tend ot try and enjoy the flavor a bit more

Water has a slight flavor when warm (bad) but is very nice when cold

#

I have exceeded my exercise target for today by a factor of 14 according to my funny watch

#

And have increased my water consumption accordingly

cinder karma
#

Tbh and it's probably bad but I only drink water when I'm actively exercising

sand frost
#

I have to drink water other times too or I get headaches

cinder karma
#

Most of the time if I'm at my desk I prefer those fun herbal teas

sand frost
#

Worse is probably the increased fainting tendency

#

I have not been very successful at tea at desk recently

cinder karma
#

Ie I'm drinking lemon ginger tea rn

sand frost
#

Due to extreme heat

cinder karma
#

I also like dandelion tea, etc

sand frost
#

I do not subscribe to the theory that hot days are for hot tea

cinder karma
#

I subscribe to the theory that my workplace does not understand the ac does not need to be this high

sand frost

The AC at work was seriously unable to keep up during the heat wave

cinder karma

I'm wearing a sweater

#

It's the dead of summer

sand frost

I think it was high 70s or low 80s in my office

#

I was hot and stuffy despite holding perfectly still

cinder karma
#

At home I prefer a setting of the ac in the low 80s (lower at night.)

sand frost
#

And I couldn’t open the door for relief bc asbestos remediation down the hall

cinder karma
#

Oh godddddd

sand frost
#

Low 70s is my preference at night

#

Low 80s has meant maybe -7 hours of sleep this past week

(Minus 7 over several days)

I have reached the promised land aka restaurant for takeout as reward for moving stuff allllll day

cinder karma

My personal opinion, and I'm told I'm very wrong for this, is that if I can tolerate long pants in summer at home it's too cold

#

At home I should be shorts and a sports bra

#

Conversely in winter if I should be in a sweater

#

Or my fuzzy blanket

steel kraken
#

Makes sense if you want to not burn a lot of money on changing the temperature

#

From the ABC (Australia) version of the article

According to Richard de Dear, a professor of architectural and design science at the University of Sydney, just resetting the thermostat from 22 to 25 degrees Celsius could cut a quarter off the cooling bill.

cinder karma

I do bring it down to comfy sleeping temperature at night though

#

And at night in winter I'm gonna really let the temps drop haha

(I really should memorize at least the amount of F per difference in C)

steel kraken

It's not constant

devout vault

(But then I'm one step away from understanding C (by learning the base), which I'm legally not allowed to do as an american)

devout vault
rain apex

have u considered not using F

devout vault

Professor Google (Results, not AI) says it's 9/5 C per F

steel kraken

cinder karma

The derivative is constant the y intercept is different though

devout vault
#

Yeah that's why I said the amount of F per difference in C

cinder karma

Anyways

#

Casey. Am I not American

devout vault
#

You are, you're just breaking the (cultural) law

#

I said legally not allowed, not that it was impossible

steel kraken
#

Going into science and thus learning si units is partially sacrificing your patriotism and/or citizenship

devout vault
#

Becoming a citizen when you already have learned it requires a partial memory wipe

steel kraken
#

Fun fact with units, the rocket formula for specific impulse is specifically setup so that the output is in seconds, precisely so it doesn't matter if you use us or metric units you get the same answer, and so the USA and USSR could compare more easily

devout vault
#

That is a fun fact

I once wasted a lot of time explaining to middle aged men with phds that more power = more melty all things considered

devout vault
#

You mean more power isn't just higher numbers? Did modded minecraft lie to me?

#

(Ignore stuff like IC2 back in the day (and maybe still), I mean stuff like RF power)

steel kraken
#

having to ignore the OG case that did remember that principle of gauge wire is important 😛

devout vault
#

Easy to ignore since most modded players today probably didn't play back then!

steel kraken
#

though early ic2 was also mean and would blow up the machines if too high voltage got put into them

devout vault
#

Only early IC2? Did later IC2 not have that?

#

That's actually entirely what I was talking about, since I remembered the different wire types and stuff

steel kraken
#

I think there was config or something to not make it blow up anymore

devout vault
#

(And the blowing up)

steel kraken
#

it would continue to not work without correct voltage, but wont destroy it

red crest
#

blowing up your machines with the wrong wires was a required rite of passage imo

sand frost
#

Is this real EE or fake EE? Because wire gauge is weird in real EE with small number = big wire

steel kraken
#

ic2 didn't use real gauge numbers, it was like LV (Low voltage), MV HV and EV or something

#

But higher voltage cable was thicker

steel kraken
#

Though from memory ic2 didn't have a distinction between Volt and current, it was just bigger number better but more dangerous

devout vault
#

It's real EE, actual fake EE is IRL /s

steel kraken
#

As iirc real world cable thickness is for the current that would run through them, not necessarily the voltage

#

Though I might be confusing that with the signal loss or whatever that happens over distance
