people will fuck up straight roads too, so I try not to blame roundabouts for that in particular
people regularly cut me off on turns by driving in the bike lane, directly across from a grade school
At least with the screwed up exit ramps in the touristy area, I can see why people are confused. Someone decided to briefly switch which side of the road you drive on and then have us all cross back over into the right lane later.
Diverging diamond!
It’s divergent alright
Bike lanes are an entirely different can of worms
(At least from my understanding)
A diverging diamond interchange (DDI), also called a double crossover diamond interchange (DCD), is a subset of diamond interchange in which the opposing directions of travel on the non-freeway road cross each other on either side of the interchange so that traffic crossing the freeway on the overpass or underpass is operating on the opposite dr...
...at least in tallahassee, where they often didn't exist
Khloe can I put these in Cities?
Yep that. I hate that.
as a kid I was just scared to use them and biked on the sidewalk anyway
(And the main one I recall is on a road where the speed limit was 45 mph. No, not a highway)
We love diverging diamonds because they fix the left turn BS
(3 lanes per direction, too)
(Car lanes, just the one bike lane on the edge of course)
Tbh I recently took the wrong ramp and ended up in a toll road so
I think I've seen people doing those 16-part swirly road piles in Cities
so probably
(possibly a mod thing)
Khloe can I build chongqing in cities
And if I do will my computer cry
Can I do subways
I love subways
God
I miss beijing subways
Like if I could get a job in China I would consider it.
play SimCity original and you can just replace all roads with train tracks
if no roads exist, people will just use them interchangeably with zero complaints
(but if a tile of road exists, they complain they can't reach anything)
tbf the trains in that are really slow & look like trolleys & have no stations, so it kinda makes sense
lol i remember reading this tip in like a strategy guide or something
I heard about it somewhere when I was a kid playing it on snes, so it was probably in a prima guide or something
we should have more monorails i like them
no opinions about practicality they just be neat
why did the first guy become asymetric
banish him
I want subways
anything I can just walk onto and get within 10 minutes of my goal, I'm happy with
Chue can I build chongqing in cities skylines
idk does it have a Z axis?
u can build shenzhen tho shenzhen ez mode
it is just big bay with a bunch of 🏢
I read that as big gay
no thats chengdu
apparently Cities does have "metros" that are like, a station that goes into an underground tunnel immediately
Chue if I can't go up 14 stories into the subways attached mall and get the spiciest cold noodles known to man I don't want it
....can I do Chicago
The elevated subway
See, a lot of these things are probably possible with mods. CS1 has a decently sized modding community from what I understand
If it weren't for the grass on the left side and the vehicle itself I could very easily mistake this for a grainy photo
chicago just naturally has elder scrolls: oblivion grass
What are you guys talking about. That's the view outside Casey's apartment right?
my condolenses to anyone who lives that close
...the view outside my apartment is another tall building. What are you talking about, you were here
Yeah, uh, it's literally right against my apartment building
I remember a river view
I heard it while typing that message
A river of windows maybe
The sound isn't that bad compared to what I was worried about moving here, but I'm also on floor 17
I have family in town and they almost took a place like, on the far side of a building next to it, but yeah
The b e a n
Please
chicago has a metal bean for some reason, that's it
or maybe that's a different large shiny art piece, I don't remember exactly
And the artist who made it hates it being called the bean, don't forget that
It's technically called Cloud Gate, for some bizarre reason
yeah
I forgot the exact details but knew they were mad and people don't care
right, yeah
...wikipedia says he later became fond of the name, so maybe not
did that person also patent the color vantablack or whatever? something like that
Is that the same person???????????????
I thought so, but it's twitter gossip I half-caught a while back
Oh wow, it is
yeah, Anish Kapoor, exclusive rights to use that color in art
no
I never would've guessed that's an elephant
I did a tourism in Dallas fucking Texas
I didn't parse the text until deciding that looks like an elephant
Back when I wasn't old and injured and loved Boston
(subconscious bias or something tho)
its more elephanty this angle perhaps
I made it a point to explore the city on foot
the ears
I hardly leave my apartment, you know this
ah, yeah, the ears aren't quite clear from the side
Usually when I'm in a new city I'll walk around everywhere
The places I've visited include therapists/doctors, work, and a couple cafes I solely visited to meet with a friend
also I haven't really walked around chicago much, just spent a lot of time at Navy Pier/etc as a kid
rn its
outside
I regret not being able to stay more in San Francisco
Oh and I guess an AMC for the minecraft movie (with the same friend)
You I know. Esca, why did you not do a tourism
It's required
I did a tourism in Chicago, lol
I'm pretty literally a shutin
I only do outdoorsy/social things when bullied into it
<hands grasping each other in agreement/teamwork meme>
I knoowwww
(I do like walks and such, but chicago's not close enough to do it there much
)
🫂
We'll be your pocket friends
i need not a not me house location to work now
and when they banish us to wfh this week i am just find cafes i like
I'm like a plant with emotional problems
Don't give me sun. Don't get me water? I wilt and die.

now I do wanna go see the dog park by my relatives' place again
My friend says I should visit corning new york
But also like
I'm traveled out
Somehow I have to pull off a trip to China and a trip to Europe 😦
Preferably without having to pay for air tickets myself
is your friend in corning? i wouldn't go without a person to visit
My friend is not in corning
But i have a lot of friends in the area
(Boston, nyc, upstate ny)
And glassblowing is somewhat special to us
i heard (20 years ago) the museum of glass is nice but i wouldn't make a trip to corning just for that
(My friend is moving to Europe, and I am under orders to swing a bloody trip to Europe.)
girl i hate to break it to u but thats a couch
I regret not going to see the chocolate in San Francisco but i didn't have time
(lol, it's so hard to see this mini dog park from Maps)
(but they get to have king-of-the-hill battles over that little thing in the middle)
same, it's been a while
I miss having a cat
my sibling has multiple and I don't envy them
but I did really love mine growing up
(one of them jumped off the roof recently) (and was fine, but still)
And yet you want a dog, which is inferior to a cat.
Yikes. Let's add another reason why I will only ever have indoor cats
I want a pet that will go jogging with me
I've seen people train cats for that.
It's usually the cat riding on the person's shoulder, but still
Esca why did you puffergasp, did you expect anything else given my username
my parents were the "lets cats do whatever" type growing up, but the one I knew was extremely good & just kinda followed them for several blocks on walks
I just prefer dogs by like 5%
The people who "let cats do whatever" is a big reason why people don't expect cats to be affectionate to begin with
(Not you necessarily, just a bit of an annoyance)
0.005% is too much
yeah, I'm not a fan of just letting them wander the neighborhood (my neighbor's cat practically lives outside), ours was just unusually chill and also never left sight of the family
Tbh I also want a farm in the middle of nowhere
I still wouldn't leave a cat out in that case. Sure, no car danger, but there's plenty of other reasons
Classical! What tourism should I do in the northeast if I ever manage to go there
I've been blackmailed into a Europe trip first though
So it won't be for at least a year
I know at least one ice cream place to visit
Do you like small towns? Big cities? Good food?
I enjoy Burlington VT but it is a bit touristy sometimes I think??
I’ve never been to cape cod but I hear it’s nice
I really can’t help you with the 2nd one lol
NYC has a tofu place I like
They make dofuhua
With nice toppings
It’s called Fong On, there’s a cute YouTube video about it
How have you been?
NYC has great museums, the natural history museum is my favorite of the big ones
There is a new katseye songggggg
I’ve been alright! Gearing up to move, which I hate even though it’s within the same apartment complex
Nice! Bigger apartment?
My robot keeps breaking but I keep fixing the problems
Yup, turns out 2 people desire more space than 1 person
I liked the transit museum in NYC
it’s an abandoned subway stop
So on the lower level they have a couple dozen train cars from various eras
(Financially I'm in a good position to buy.)
Fingers crossed they fall in a good way for you!!
There’s some nice hiking in the Catskills
Lemme see if I can find the hike I went on once
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaaterskill_Falls may have been to see this
<flashbacks to reading that one book that is the only reason I know these exist and are mountains (My Side of the Mountain?)>
I knew the name but not that they were in NY until now
I didn't know it was NY
Until you just mentioned it
I literally just remembered the mountain name 😛
going by context and that wiki link
I loved those books as a kid
I didn't click the link and saw no embed
It’s cause I hid the embed by habit lol
I reread the first one many times, and eventually heard about the followups and read those too
There’s also always the mt Washington area in NH
Yeah I only rec Acadia for a long weekend out of Boston
It’s a long drive so it’s not super worth it for less time
Yeahhhhh
We did go on a short weekend once and it was a nice trip but like 80% car
Tbh i was driving home from knit night Sunday and was like
When did I get a social life
(simply check a 1685 map of New Netherland)
The heck is that weird lake
There's Washington the state, which is on the side of the country compared to Mt Washington (apparently), and if that's not enough there's also Washington DC.
Man, geography is such a scam
they may have just kinda guessed at the shape of this reservoir
(or it shifted over a few centuries)
Best in summer
If it’s a reservoir would it be that big?
Ohhh maybe it’s lake Champlain
oh, yeah, probably
And the weird st Lawrence river is mini Great Lakes
the scale's off but that's cartography
Old cartography, anyways!
Someone go find the YouTube video on Minnesota'a shape
Is there some dark secret behind the shape of it that I haven't heard of?
all I know about minnesota's shape is that it includes this nature preserve that's very clearly in canada
...this feels like something siblings would do while playing a multiplayer game.
Or for more serious example - gerrymandering
Thank you, was just about to go on a google journey
oh, it is about the canada bit
It's what people did in colonialism when they couldn't draw maps but in this case is okay because is US and Canada
We're friends still right???
I'll smuggle in some better than bullion
Only up until a few months ago
We're friends still. Right?
Sorry about the jet upside down in Toronto
To be fair y'all nearly landed on a taxiway in San Francisco
(Or was that LAX)
(To be fair, weird map shit like this isn't actually funny is only okay because it's between two friendly countries)
Same way there is a light house that is technically contested between Canada and the US

I will reiterate: geography is a scam
Invented by Big Cartography to sell more maps
Vegetables
this tangentially reminded me of all the US lighthouses that are for sale as residential housing for some reason
which ig is a scam in that you'd have to somehow upkeep this
well, they aren't in service anymore is probably the main reason
yeah, it just seems extremely hazardous to leave up to whoever
On the second episode - Grian is talking about not knowing how to make minecarts move since there aren't powered rails?
Hello, minecart boosters?? This guy is a total imposter, smh
I need a list of things casey considers a scam
i am fully confident the train of thought crashed at the stop labeled "sell this to some sucker and get some money while washing your hands of it"
though iirc I was originally worried because one is like, in the middle of a bay in Washington or some such, high traffic
Scams are a scam
Add that to the list
Ooh it looks like my gym us running a promotion
it would be extremely cool to have a lighthouse to live in, or even visit, but also wildly impractical and expensive, so
It might be a bit more practical to do one of the clifftop ones.
(I didn't know these in-the-middle-of-the-water ones even existed until now)
What about instead retrofitting a school bus to live in
I've seen some extremely old historical ones that just build on coastal rock outcrops instead, for lack of seafloor construction tricks
handy to have the light way out in the water instead of at the shore (and/or behind the rocks)
I would say "budget trailer" but I'm not sure that would actually end up cheaper
I guess more like "we have a trailer at home"
I also would like to take a ride on the rotating ship
Anyways
The trailer would also like
Lack AC
Anyways
What's far more likely is that I buy a house in the suburbia
And become the middle aged fool I am at heart

I know he finds out about them later bc I distinctly remember him making one
Ah. He asked people to leave comments amount if they know how and I did see some, so maybe that's why. (Or another member told him, or wiki diving, or...)
Ahh
tbh I don't remember all that much from grians evo except (idk if you really care about spoilers but might be nice bc there's lore?) ||big snow base, grian has a cult-like summoning ritual for the YouTuber tauris, he also starts hermitcrsft 6 right at the end so despite claiming they'll coexist he ends his evo weirdly quick||
for a series I last watched about 5 years ago I'm impressed at my memory for it
Since there seems to be lore stuff (if ||the bedrock mountain side + "we are watching"|| is any indication, only through episode two so far) I do think I'd rather avoid spoilers, but what MC version do they end up going through?
I have 1.8 in my head but I'm not sure
1.8 beta or release? I assume the latter based on the episode count
Release
Definitely past release 1.0 though
That bedrock in the mountain will be a recurring character
I guessed as much just from some vague mention about ||watchers|| when people were theorizing about evo for the life series teaser
yeah that's the ||watcher symbol I think?|| it appears around ||a version change iirc||
Okay! I'll do upper body then

why is the same texture the top of scaffolding and funnels
The same reason the bottom of crafting tables are just planks, I guess
the texture is in a folder called funnel
assets/create/textures/block/funnel/brass_funnel_frame.png
I mean, that just means the scaffolding reused the funnel texture and not the other way around

(Also, their heart was broken. This was a serious matter)
I'd be more concerned about the sky falling
What did you do? You seem to have caused some sort of personal apocalypse for this person
Current theory is the sky fell onto the five husbands and that is how they were lost
That one was something to do with spacecore
And losing the 5 husbands is what broke their heart. It all makes sense
You need to make better sky supporting beams
(Or not have a useless space nucleus)
You are a cat in an astronaut costume, the sky is clearly your responsability
Astronauts are in space, not clouds
They study astronomy, not nephology
Somebody needs to check their cloud nucleus

can I please have some advice
What are good projects to have on your github, as of rn I just have some simple python stuff for graphing 3d and 2d complex numbers alongside some java applications
"Looking to add a bitcoin fund to your portfolio" no, I wasn't, actually
Great question! I'll be waiting alongisde you for answers from others.
I have had some weirdly good impressions from my mod projects, but other than that...
Idk this seems like decent set
My degree is in math and working on my MS in data science and I just quit my job so having a solid github with my degrees is a must
its 2 things
What r u trying to get hired for
That's the important question!
You don't need a good github but it is a plus
Idk go write a postgres extension or something it'll be fun
With how competitive the job market is and my lack of experience yes I need it
Assuming u r not getting hired to do Oracle at least
I just quit my education job at a startup and want a real job lmfao
How much more time do you have in your masters
And you're not US based which is good here
I am us based
Yeah, it'll be a lot easier once you have your masters
What if u just skip to apply for phd
I went directly to work after bachelors and then never looked back
its really compeative but I think I have an in a professor really wants me to be his student and hes well funded
hes on his 3rd paper this year
for context im 20 I need the extra masters year for just time and growth in general
its my backup plan dont wanna do a phd for jobs I want to bc I love math
So the way I see it is
I suppose, from my naive perspective as far as the projects go... just do projects that are the kind of thing you would be doing in whichever field you want to be hired in.
- You will get your masters in a year
Honestly I'm kinda confused about what you want now, besides the general field
better github projects
If you want money then escape academia yea
That is significantly more useful to employment than anything you can write in a year
Period.
I wouldnt do a phd if I wasnt going to finish it at 24
For the github - do what is fun
but thats when people end their MS degrees in the states so its like I can have a phd by then why not
I don't really think gh helps in specific direction besides just generally show you enjoying the code
Do something relevant to ur field if u want, since it's probably something the interviewer understand and appreciate more
But i also showed ppl my modding code in C# even tho it's a C++ position so
Im planning to maybe write some code to do predictive models for golfing outcomes but imbeing LAZY
Sounds like a plan then
My dads been wanting it for sportsbetting LMFAO
im an alternative girly im so scared for interviewing i bought a wig
Yeah shame u missed the remote times
it just depends where at least around me
I dont think i can I spent two hours doing my linkedin pics yesterday
My linkedin still says im in skool
(sometimes i get dissonance between u and ur pfp being sketchy faces)
thats my bfs doodle version of me
that pic is titled like the army of shroom or smth
Anyways. My general impression is that unless your open source project really blows up its more to show passion than anything else.
I dont have a degree with a focus on coding I just want jobs to know I can indeed code
which is good!
so write literally anything. maintain it for a while.
it can be literally anything in any language
bonus points if you're not the only user
I have java and python atm Ialso used some javaFX stuff
yeah, employers are just going to glance through it, so I would focus more on it having good docs, well structured both program and directory-wise, well written commit messages
then have projects of the language you want to convey you know, but also not things that are just trivial projects
The most important thing is a portfolio site with an Ecco text generator though, right?
Tbh I did not show my employer my stardew mods
From my inquiries about PhD students with job offers they seem to be more interested in the coding aspect
I have no portfolio nor ever needed one really
What is your degree in if I may
bachelor in comp sci
I think that's the key diff
I find it hard for people to understand what I do with my time as a math degree
honestly I think people were equally confused about both halves of my degree
(maths & cs, it means I did the "pure" part of both subjects and dropped the "applied" part)
you only did the part I disliked
I was thinking about taking some inspo from a classmate and doing some number theory stuff. I really wanna see what I can do w other things tho
I really like real analysis but im not good at it and struggle if I could mix that and coding id be really happy
I'm no expert, as I went into academia, but personally I would prioritize work that demonstrates your interests and strengths. I imagine people may glance through it to see:
- Do you use awful bonkers customs?
- Are you capable of organizing a project in a reasonable way?
- Are you decently capable of pushing/pulling/maybe even PRing?
Since it sounds like you have a stronger focus on math than most CS people, it would make sense imo to do projects related to math you enjoy.
yes I can do those
My brothers, who are in CS, mention that in the workplace they regularly encounter people who don't really know how to push/pull
I can push and pull easily, I lead projects using github as a base repo. My commits are detailed and show what they are doing. I have clean code my README's and annotations need work
I also keep hearing that, and it;'s just crazy to me.
not all of them are out of money!
yes literally I have profs that are funded and those want to work w me
For the PhD, my advice is you must enjoy research in your field or it will be a miserable time
If you're in math, 4 years is optimistic, fwiw
I already know exactly what I want to do
6 years is typical, even for good students
I have 2 years of courses already done so
im banking on 3 years and I have already done the research talked to many people etc im all set with that
The research often takes time, independent of coursework, but if you go into a program where they let you substitute quals with coursework then maybe
In my observation of my many phd-having math friends, sometimes the proofs just struggle
I already talked to the head of phd admissions Im taking a prelim and have a ton of grad level coursework that applies to the PhD
I have an advisor lined up who does applied and theoretical in my field of interest so I can also lean more applied if proofs are an issue
Great! But I would still consider what you'd do if it took 5 years. It sounds like it's much less likely than usual, but sometimes things drag out as long as the money doesn't run out.
I personally decided about 1 year from the end that I'd rather stick it out than quit
But it was a close thing
I have 3 years of funding
if I get in
one year to finish up classes and 2 to do research
A tried and true method
I'm genuinely tempted to make a properly animated one, though.
one of these days I should. I know people have reverse engineered the wave algorithm, or just using a gif asset
A master's is sometimes more dread-inducing than a PhD, I feel. Since it's sometimes heavily course-based I think it can be to a higher degree "more of the same" as compared to a PhD which has research which should be "novel" stuff.
it definitely would not have been for me
just seeing a latex formatted document makes my eyes glaze over and no information will enter my brain
im mostly scared for preliminary exams
My master's was literally just coursework, I didn't do a thesis or nothin
didn't know that was even possible
the second year of a master here was literally just you on your own researching and writing a thesis
no courses left
Yeah apparently everyone does a research project or thesis, but I just did another year of courses and they gave me a degree lol
i didnt complain
did you also not have a thesis for your bachelor
New quote added by atravita as #6452 (https://discordapp.com/channels/137344473976799233/1215712021207720006/1387442413294977125)
I did a research project and presented at a little conference, but no thesis
no thesis for me either but I thought I was an exception honestly
I think it's common in STEM
no thesis for my bachlors
instead I had a 6 month project which was essentially a uni arranged internship
mine could have literally just been exams
just building something for some client that was paying the university for it
the project is the most fun I had during the entire degree
that made it pretty clear that I really just wanted to actually start working and get the fuck out of education
I remember hating my research project, but in hindsight I may have been too unfair towards it. I was just really mad at my university as a whole lol
I enjoyed the (optional) project I did
into models of synchronous spontaneous activity in biological neural networks
I wanted to do a project for my master's, but I thought the projects I wanted to do weren't "proper" enough, so I didn't pursue it
Today's background audio is a lecture by an exercise scientist
Who is currently backing up my life choices wrt caffeine
blank canvas and no inspiiration this sucks
my life choices re: caffeine are "it is good and has practically no downside, fill 'er up", so i look forward to being told that that take is correct
I have a mixed drink and a bang and I will enjoy both
Same!
caffeine never did anything for me. I can't tell a difference when I consume something with it
so I'm good either way
I love incoherent error messages
unfortunately the inability to sleep following excessive caffeine is a bit of a bummer
have to you tried having that (possibly adhd) thing where caffeine makes you tired
you know i never tried that
how does one achieve this power
what I actually wish is that I had about 50% of my current caffeine sensitivity without the awful headaches that come with getting to that level and then stopping coffee for a day
if I had about 50% sensitivity I would be able to have 1-2 cups of coffee without much pain
crispr gene editing
not sure I am up for that until another couple decades of r&d worth of improvement 😂
It doesn't quite make me tired, but it does seem to observably lower my heart rate at best, and do nothing at worst.
@cinder karma #making-mods-general message
specialized reference counting strategies can account for cycles too if you're careful about it -- see the implementation of the dumpster rust crate for an example 😁
Yes. I am aware. I am also aware that earlier python reference counting strategies did not.
Do yall drink pure espresso or something
I just drink latte for the taste
The caffeine effects r minimal
doesn't python use cycle collection (like mark-and-sweep style) instead of cycle detection?
I only consume the cheapest energy drink located at my local not costco
cycle detection strategies don't involve pausing threads at specific intervals (unlike cycle collection)
i drink hot chocolate sometimes does that count. wb milkshakes do those count
oh i take adhd meds do those count
unless u crush up a caffine pill in those i assume no
I take my 37 mg ritalin then consume 300 mg of caffine
I fear I might die young
something on the scale from adhd meds to hot chocolate must count as coffee
Im glad we have the full breadth of people here
If we had more depth too im sure we can produce the drinks alignment chart
Im one of those people who are like I did worse cant be worse then the shit I did as a kid so im good
lmaoooooo
but its true I really dont think I can do worse
I drink Americanos
This is because eagle freedom eagle nah it's just how our office coffee machine works
my old boss would be like DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY CHEMICALS ARE IN THAT DRINK?
Sir ive done worse objectly worse stuff its fine
this one cafe in ottawa changed their menu to say "canadiano" instead
What is difference between americano and just black coffee
I've had a triple espresso shot latte before bed on numerous occasions because it tastes nice, and slept like a baby.
made diff ways\
Americano is espresso diluted with water
idk coffee tastes bad i like my milkshakes and hot chocolate
I only do this because the coffee machine only does espressos well
And does...stupid shit if you ask for something else
So I get an espresso and dilute it with water
My weird BS is then I put instant coffee in that concoction
So it's 2x a coffee
when i did instant coffee id just dump like half a cup of it into my mug
chuuu I drink decaf dunkin espresso w coffee milk and it makes me zoom i swear i am not drinking pure espresso!!
its decaf tho
There are two exclamation points
the coffee milk at dunkin in the lattes is apparently caffeinated somewhat
Chue, decaf is less caf not no caf
but if I drink 1 full normal latte in the morning then I often cannot sleep that night
I do it anyways sometimes bc tasty
The coffee boba I got in California was good
One of my neighbors just lost their home to a fire :C - Don't forget to do your weeds in your yard this year people ! =/ 🔥 🚒 🧑🚒 🏠
I thought decaf was no caf
oh, it's trace amounts of caffeine
i think i recall there being a lawsuit once about decaf containing caffeine
apparently it is now limited in the US to require 97% or more caffeine removal
just don't give it to your dog
Or, in less chemist terms, chocolate with the coffee
The decaf lattes with coffee milk are probably about 1/2 cup of coffee strength
I found out recently that there's theobromine in yerba mate
God I used to love mate
Do you think anyone turns their ADHD meds into coffee
I think they probably shouldn't
Yeah
I feel like there are plenty of people that don't abide by the "probably shouldn't" rule
you're not supposed to take them with vitamin C or anything too acidic
And there may in fact be a disproportionate amount of those people in the ADHD population
yup! and you'd be surprised just how much gets ruled out by the vitamin C thing - milk and most fruit juices are all out
What
I take mine with water now
Wait
Acid?
My stomach acid is ph1
This seems well
Weirdly nonsense?
Almost nothing I eat or drink has that type of acidity
I think I'm misremembering acid
I think it's just vitamin C
I remembered I couldn't have it with orange juice and my brain filled in acid
even though, you know, orange juice is super high in vitamin C so that was definitely the reason lmao
I do t think it's vitamin c I'm pretty sure it's about the ph of your stomach effecting medication absorption
Ph small intestine maybe
Tums effect absorption as well and no vitamin C
there's definitely an interaction between vitamin C and ADHD medication.
it's possible other things do too, but there is a reported interaction between methylphenidate and vitamin C
Good or bad interaction? Or mixed
bad
Yes it effects your stomachs ph
no haha, just malabsorption
I meant to say it isn't just bc vitamin c is special or smth it's more tied to the ph then the exact substance
(might not actually be for methylphenidate though! which is interesting haha)
I'm suddenly recalling that you shouldn't eat poptarts when taking ADHD meds
For that very reason
Which is funny since that was one of the breakfasts of choice for me growing up
Can you go find me the pkas of all adhd meds
What's a pkas
Scary science stuff

is anyone here polyam and have used the polyam mod
oh no that's horribly on topic
(probably ask #modded-stardew, this channel's for mod-makers talking about programming and such
)
(And non-modmakers, ex. crumble and aquo!)
(And me)

what would a plasma semiconductor be like
You're made mods before, you don't count
Also, you have once again confused me with a new nickname
oh i was wondering why chu asked that out of seemingly nowhere
(I was hoping "and such" would imply every other possible user, okay)
Excuse you, we only do 3rd grade physics here
u can get plasma if u microwave a grape :)
Guys I got a C in physics I no one should ever ask me physics
wow you got to write C in physics
(You do!)
plasma is already a conductor due to its charged particles right
so how do you make it semi
You don't
Fun fact of the day: Apaprently there is a balatro multiplayer PvP mod, and they even have ranked matchmaking
did watch a video of that, where the bosses are replaced with the pvp section of whoever gets the lower score loses a life
add a resistor? /j
and some jokers that do multiplayer interactions
got the other mild problem of the plasma also wanting to melt everything
That's also not the definition of a semiconductor
surely a semiconductor is a like someone who works on trains but only part time
you don't like letting me invent my own definitions of things and that's very mean
think of how much easier electronics would be if semiconductors were just bad conductors!
elizabeth you do material science, I've had this same question since I was like 16
when people say you can see internal tension in materials by just looking through a polarising lens, surely that can only apply to (at most) transparent materials?
I could google this but I literally never remember to
Random dumb idea (I seem to get one like every other time I go poop, the bathroom is a mystical place for brainstorming): In some video game I make, there'll be a sidequest about the competitive coin flipping sport. Complete with ranked matchmaking (for online versions) and tournaments. Also, a tv show with all the normal sports / shounen anime tropes (which you can't watch as a player, only hear mentioned sometimes).
is that a real sport
It will be in this universe
Of course then people playing the game would be like "esports aren't that dumb are you crazy", and I'll just say "Not everything is a critique, I literally did this because it was a funny idea, I have only ever had one serious idea ever"
(The "one serious idea" being a game idea which I'm actually not entirely sure how to fully translate into a game in a way I'd like, though I did get an idea for it being a roguelike I'm unsure if that would diminish the base idea any)
Sun!!!!
Esca, I work out. Voluntarily
Yeah, that's pretty good evidence for not liking fun

sounds like compensation for having too much fun at other times
No
This, however? Yeah, that could be fun if they aren't super expensive
Except for gluten intolerant people I guess
I think maybe it's about light bouncing off too?? obviously not truly internal tension, just surface tension internal from the axis you're looking from
ok nope i was wrong
it's just clear stuff
i've never really been sure what polarized light is
It's what happens when light becomes divisive
I was gonna make a joke about certain combinations of light are polarizing to certain groups of people

Moving is not fun
Falls under exercise.
However the sweat factor is basically negated since you're in water, so a bit better than normal exercise
reading manga and harassing friends with out-of-context clips all day
also video games like once a month
(swimming is also fun but far away)
I sometimes do this with webtoon (some examples here: #programmers-off-topic message ), it's fun
My gym is equidistant between work and home
I have not played a video game in a long time
I also enjoy watching the drag race lipsyncs sometimes
I say sometimes because denali was robbed
that used to be me but for costco's food court and was also for uni
I wish they sold decaf coffee freezies
see this is my frustration with how we teach science - your explanation made me realise how the whole thing might work (light travelling through areas essentially gets "twisted") but when I was taught this, it was treated as a "fun fact" rather than an effect with a cause and specific parameters
anyway polarised light is when you go to Antarctica during its daytime
one thing better is demos to go along with the explanations
a recent video that really helped my understanding of electricity was starting with questions, giving some multiple choice options, gives some other info as context, and then does a good experiment demonstrating it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AXv49dDQJw
In this video, I measure a wave of electricity traveling down a wire, and answer the question - how does electricity know where to go? How does "electricity" "decide" where electrons should be moving in wires, and how long does that process take? Spoiler alert - very fast!
I've been very excited about this project for a while - it was a lot of ...
title is semi-clickbait because its not actually high speed camera footage, but it is the correct sample rate
electricity was always a big one for me because the “single ball in a pipe” metaphor that we tend to be taught with is very flawed when it comes to understanding things like why voltage in series is split evenly between components (how does the ball “know” that there are more components down the pipe?)
it works better when you think of it as a pipe full of electrons that are then all pushing each other, so if a later electron experiences resistance down the pipe, it will impact precious ones too, so energy is transferred not from individual electrons but from all of them pushing together against all the components (which is my layman understanding but atra can correct me when they see this
)
I mean the quantum theory explanation is even the concept of individual electrons is an abstraction and its just complex waveforms in the field
Works well enough for dc!
why do I have an unremovable AI in whatsapp now...
because you're using a Meta product ✨
The giant AI sidebar in Zoom just epitomizes the shoving of AI into everything ever
* sidebar that you can't close
Let's not forget Discord is going public.
Which means I guarantee they're going to shove AI in everywhere.
I can barely stand using office anymore bc of copilot
Office? You mean Copilot 365?
yeah I try not to look at it
You just now got it?
actually painful this is my homescreen now
I always do water metaphors
I think there’s a way to formalize them such that they’re at least pretty close to accurate?
the maths I am currently doing apply to both fluid mechanics and electro-magnetic fields, so there's a bunch of physics stuff that I just think about as being exact analogies of each other
Not even duck duck go is safe from ai
I wonder of anyone finds this stuff helpful to have on every app, even if u use it surely one is enough
Yet another reason why I refuse to use it
People don't get it but I don't want it to take over our lives
(Do not do this, not legal advice, etc.
)
Do you think they might disable it for your account if you just spammed it every second of every day with nonsense to the point they're actively losing a notable amount of money on it? /j
aren't they already losing money on it
Sure, but they obviously have a threshold!
"Prepare a brief of today's news from the <finance> industry regarding <cryptocurrency>" as an auto-filled suggested prompt to feed to the AI chumbucket is a truly bleak thing to capture in a screenshot
I just hope it won't become profitable but the issue is that people will want it for intimate/friendship reasons Which I mean do I need to tell you some of the most profitable industries in that aspect
People would pay so much if you put an ai gf Chatbot under a paywall for like extra memory storage etc
(I was quick enough to see that annoying share.google thing it does nowadays. It's the bloody worst.
)
The share button does that, but the three dots > copy URL copies the actual URL.
It's so dumb.
I think it's already too late, the kids are already messed up...
trust me ik I worked as an educator for a while
The shit talked about actual children by educators is crazy
I KNEW I WASNT CRAZY
i was trying to share a link and I was like what this can't be new that would be a stupid thing to intentionally add
have I just never used the share button instead of copying link manually
but no I am not crazy
thank god
i maintain that it's stupid though
I feel like the kids are mostly alright. I think it would be better for them to have less dependency on technology and use less AI, but I’m sure that when I was growing up adults felt that way about TV and then smartphones.
It was happening to me a few months back, but then it stopped. And it seems to have started again recently.
So I'd bet they've been A/B testing it for a while, and just rolled it out fully now.
the amount of incredibly inappropriate things I hear literal 3rd graders say is nuts
I think many kids are smart enough to have complex feelings about AI
It wasnt like this before at all
My experience is mostly with older kids, but the 3rd graders I’ve interacted with mostly were misbehaving by trying to scam Roblox from what I saw
Ive worked with kids for a while and yeah its not great
kids dont know how to do tasks anymore they just ask people to do it for them
they expect me to do it for them most of the time and these are younger kids.
They dont even know how to explore or play with things.
They will sit there and say idk what to do u didnt tell me to do anything
I feel so too! one of the weirdest parts of growing up was seeing people in my generation going from complaining about the nonsense older generations accused us of to accusing the next generation of exactly the same thing. The weirdest part is that it seems to mean completely rewriting history sometimes - I've heard so many times that back in our day, kids didn't destroy makeup samples in shops, which... is blatantly untrue
There are some objective measures which I do think are reasonable cause for concern (ex. https://www.nationsreportcard.gov/reading/nation/scores/?grade=4) but not panic, I would say
Back when we were kids, dinosaurs roamed the earth
So yeah, I don't believe the fearmongering that gen alpha is braindead and we're all doomed. And it seems to me like kids are continuing to create their own play spaces and creativity, just sometimes online now. I've seen a few videos of people accidentally stumbling across kid communities online and realising how strangely wholesome they were.
The dinosaurs are ||cute and feathery||
idk i hear the dinos down in oz can be vicious
There is a really interesting theory about this though!
Basically, the reason younger millenials and older gen z have much higher rates of literacy than previous generations may very well be a result of the internet being mostly text based at the time, so we spent much more time practicing reading and writing than any other generation.
But as the internet got more advanced, voice and video communication became more common again, and that's less of a requirement now! Combine that with a pandemic seriously hampering kids' access to school and it's very possible this isn't a trend but a blip.
(and if you look at the chart you sent, the peak is indeed exactly in those years of the internet!)
it's possible, but I think an interesting point in a subsequent article i read after going looking for this kind of stuff highlights growing SES inequality https://nataliewexler.substack.com/p/what-nobody-is-saying-about-the-naep which I do think is troubling
I have a friend who works at a nonprofit that hands out free books to try to combat the summer drop in reading for children in homes without books
since there's data to show that this is a significant driver of reading inequality
I mean
That's very concerning too. One of the interesting things in the pandemic was just how inequitable its effects were
hmmmmmmm
can a juni come bonk atra for spreading misinfo pls
dolly parton has a massive program giving books to kids without access to them, doesn't she?
the imagination library
and little free libraries and regular libraries are obviously also helpful
(Fwiw, I think the breakdown of the 40 hr week is part of that.)
I'm not particularly against overtime but I think holding people to just-below-full time, unnecessary night shifts, and clopens should be illegal
want to hear something interesting? it looks like as of 2021 and 2022, the UK actually hasn't experienced a fall in literacy rates at all according to one report
(I'm still trying to figure out the other report lmao)
other report had a fall from 2018 but 2018 was a rise, so it still lines up with 2006-2015 figures. All in all, though, this is exactly what we were talking about, isn't it - this is the report that was affected by COVID and it found that socioeconomic gaps were widening.
i guess it's good it hasn't falled overall! but bad that it's widening
yup. But it makes sense, the uk is terrible with class issues haha
(This is basically what is happening in the US too.l
yup, Elizabeth mentioned it earlier
My brain is still kinda messed up with circuit diagrams because of like the old understanding of flowing positive to negative but then modern understanding seeing it the other way around, but like which way do we do circuit diagrams now because of things like diodes
I'm still not sure how parallel can work (the splitting thing you mentioned essentially - what determines current proportions with parallel circuits)
... this sounds like how air particles and stuff like balloons work
Please don't break my brain more.
...atra WHY DID YOU CHANGE YOUR NAME AGAIN
sigh
Specifically so soon after the last one
At this point I should just assume any unfamiliar usernames of that role are you I guess
Bluebs how much more dj-ing do I have to do for the dj legend role
well I just imagine it like a bunch of spheres in a pipe that are all pushing each other, with current being their speed, voltage being how hard they push and resistance being how much the pipe restricts their movement. Parallel = a fork in the pipe, so only like half the balls make it to each tine of the fork, if that makes sense?
basically imagine a high-pressure water pipe that suddenly opens into two pipes, if one of them is much bigger than the other then the water in that pipe will be slower
Blues am I not allowed to music
I mainly meant forks that are more than 2 directions (conceptually). Like, if it splits across 10 LEDs or something, wouldn't the further away ones be weaker? IF not, how the heck not????
Technically you're right but the resistance of copper wire/copper traces is negligible
what if the ones further awy are 10km away
.wolfram copper resistance 10km 10 guage
copper | resistivity | 1.7×10^-8 Ω m (ohm meters)
AWG #10 (American wire gauge) | resistance
10 km | copper | | 32.31 Ω (ohms)
clearly significant
I mean the wire thickness was a bit arbitrary
It would be more significant if it was pcb traces
a 10km large pcb
Modern signal integrity stuff would probably just try to ensure each trace is identical length so the closer ones take curvey paths
(Apparently there's a bunch of stuff coming out re:Hytale from people who used to work on it, including Hypixel - ex. in 2019 (last time he saw the game) he considered the game maximum 2 years from release, and other developers supposedly agreed.)
This is why I don't estimate my work, I know I'll be off by that order of magnitude or worse every time
Classic adhd
(I'm also usually off by a factor of 2-10x)
Especially the all important "how long does it take me to get ready"
I promise 1 week and then do it tmr
Seems like there were very specific reasons that estimate didn't end up happening, like people who were brought in with more experience in the game dev industry pushing for the new engine and game direction and such
That sucks I'm sorry
yeah add makes estimates hard when my internal timescale is past, right now, and future, without any more granularity
but yeah, if you initially did the estimate of 2 years on unity or whatever, and then switched to custom/bespoke or unreal, that would blow out estimates
From what I understand it was custom C# (client) + Java (server), to full C++
I don't think it was unreal but only like 80% certain
Also, when they switched engines they had already worked on it for like 5 years at that point
Yeah :(
Dew it, I shifted over a few months ago and it's really good
The image search gives a proxied image
I get that it's 4 privacy but it's annoying when I save

Huh, the shared.google thing didn't happen this time
I mean you have a button to go to the real image
Godddd
I want to knowwwww why my Google feed is suddenly full of low quality sites talking about Google quantum breakthrough
Yes i am just petty about the friction
Why are you 5th grade physics now? I got so confused
graduated 4th grade
But what happened to the knitting?
It's still my server tag
Nothing from actual Google
Imagine if advancing through college was as fast as atra is advancing through grades
Atra after 12th grade are you going to physics college? And if so, are you just doing undergrad or going beyond that?
Tbh if it wasn't for a badly timed mental breakdown I likely would have taken physics as my second major
when are mental breakdowns NOT badly timed
It could have happened two years later or two years earlier
So what you're saying is that is what caused the 3rd grade physics reversion? That's a pretty bad breakdown
Those would have been better timing
Yeah, if it's a good time for a breakdown it tends to be able to be bottled up for longer until it is a bad time

counterpoint: when it’s a good time for a breakdown usually you aren’t stressed enough to be having one yet
23 to go!
Hence being able to be bottled up longer 🙂
I almost added a sentence about how stress compresses your capacity for not-breaking-down and that is why
counterpoint was meant to be for atra, sorry I’m too tired to be making sense
no you
I think there's a few more than 13 items on my wishlist that are on sale right now steam. Given, you know, there are over 600 entries in it
you never know
The ones they recommended are all the "maybe some day" ones not the "interested short term" ones 😛
I do know, because I've looked at 5 that are on my maybe-get-this-sale list 😛
water is so good
Like, in general?
I used to be a water hater but then like a year ago my brain did the adhd thing and decided overnight that fizzy drinks are bad and water is good
Cold water is nice, but it has to be really cold for me to like it 😛
And at least somewhat cold for me to even drink it
I still like carbonation, only stopped a while back because money
Occasionally when I order food I'll get a sprite
But 95%+ of the time, I'm just drinking water that has been refrigerated over night
there’s just something good about drinking water yknow
Yeah. For lack of a better word it just feels "clean"
Flavor is still boring though, which is why I still get chocolate milk / apple juice regularly 😛
But the lack of flavor is part of why it is good I think
it’s what contributes to the glug
I definitely can't glug soda, that's for sure 😛
I can chocolate milk, and especially apple juice, but because those aren't unlimited so I tend ot try and enjoy the flavor a bit more
Water has a slight flavor when warm (bad) but is very nice when cold
I have exceeded my exercise target for today by a factor of 14 according to my funny watch
And have increased my water consumption accordingly
Tbh and it's probably bad but I only drink water when I'm actively exercising
I have to drink water other times too or I get headaches
Most of the time if I'm at my desk I prefer those fun herbal teas
Worse is probably the increased fainting tendency
I have not been very successful at tea at desk recently
Ie I'm drinking lemon ginger tea rn
Due to extreme heat
I also like dandelion tea, etc
I do not subscribe to the theory that hot days are for hot tea
I subscribe to the theory that my workplace does not understand the ac does not need to be this high
Elizabeth
The AC at work was seriously unable to keep up during the heat wave
I think it was high 70s or low 80s in my office
I was hot and stuffy despite holding perfectly still
At home I prefer a setting of the ac in the low 80s (lower at night.)
And I couldn’t open the door for relief bc asbestos remediation down the hall
Oh godddddd
Low 70s is my preference at night
Low 80s has meant maybe -7 hours of sleep this past week
(Minus 7 over several days)

Yeah but people own houses?
I think December and all of summer are both common lease turnover times in the world outside college towns
Sounds fake

I should have linked a different one that wasn't immediately pay walled, ah well
My personal opinion, and I'm told I'm very wrong for this, is that if I can tolerate long pants in summer at home it's too cold
At home I should be shorts and a sports bra
Conversely in winter if I should be in a sweater
Or my fuzzy blanket
Makes sense if you want to not burn a lot of money on changing the temperature
From the ABC (Australia) version of the article
According to Richard de Dear, a professor of architectural and design science at the University of Sydney, just resetting the thermostat from 22 to 25 degrees Celsius could cut a quarter off the cooling bill.
I do bring it down to comfy sleeping temperature at night though
And at night in winter I'm gonna really let the temps drop haha
.wolfram 22c in f

.wolfram 25c in f
77 °F (degrees Fahrenheit)
(I really should memorize at least the amount of F per difference in C)
It's not constant
(But then I'm one step away from understanding C (by learning the base), which I'm legally not allowed to do as an american)
...it's not? What
have u considered not using F
Professor Google (Results, not AI) says it's 9/5 C per F
0c = 32f, 100c = 212f
The derivative is constant the y intercept is different though
Yeah that's why I said the amount of F per difference in C
You are, you're just breaking the (cultural) law
I said legally not allowed, not that it was impossible
Going into science and thus learning si units is partially sacrificing your patriotism and/or citizenship
Becoming a citizen when you already have learned it requires a partial memory wipe
Fun fact with units, the rocket formula for specific impulse is specifically setup so that the output is in seconds, precisely so it doesn't matter if you use us or metric units you get the same answer, and so the USA and USSR could compare more easily
Fighting over who got to the moon first was more wholesome than the other rivalry
Usually it wouldn't be 😦
Usually
Still find it funny the one place the us is fine with metric is in bullets, which is culturally peak us
millimetres
It sounds like the reasoning behind that would be similar to what you mentioned, "even the guns y'all do have are worse than ours"
Does nasa not use metric anyways since they're a scientific division?
Or do you think it was for the benefit of the unwashed masses
nasa internally is metric iirc but the vendors aren't afaik
the famous mars climate orbiter crash was from mixed metric units from NASA and US units from lockheed martin
That is impressively stupid
Classic Lockheed
I once wasted a lot of time explaining to middle aged men with phds that more power = more melty all things considered
You mean more power isn't just higher numbers? Did modded minecraft lie to me?
(Ignore stuff like IC2 back in the day (and maybe still), I mean stuff like RF power)
having to ignore the OG case that did remember that principle of gauge wire is important 😛
Easy to ignore since most modded players today probably didn't play back then!
though early ic2 was also mean and would blow up the machines if too high voltage got put into them
Only early IC2? Did later IC2 not have that?
That's actually entirely what I was talking about, since I remembered the different wire types and stuff
I think there was config or something to not make it blow up anymore
(And the blowing up)
it would continue to not work without correct voltage, but wont destroy it
blowing up your machines with the wrong wires was a required rite of passage imo
Is this real EE or fake EE? Because wire gauge is weird in real EE with small number = big wire
ic2 didn't use real gauge numbers, it was like LV (Low voltage), MV HV and EV or something
But higher voltage cable was thicker
Smh
Though from memory ic2 didn't have a distinction between Volt and current, it was just bigger number better but more dangerous
It's real EE, actual fake EE is IRL /s
