i love the awful fanfiction ive written
even the stuff i wrote when i was like 12
i was writing squaishey/female reader wattpad fanfiction and it was the worst thing youve ever read
(yes, the minecraft youtuber)
I wrote highly dramatic Harry potter fanfiction
i never actually wrote harry potter fanfic even though i was really into it as a kid
I only recently found a birthday card my hallmates made me in high school
It was Harry Potter themed
ok actually i wasn't that into it..... i wasn't obsessive abojt it like i was with a lot of fandom stuff i was into. i just read it many times
the future is now
In high school, we made each other giant birthday cards
like i had a map of middle-earth in my room but not much harry potter stuff
Like, this is easily 2ft by 3ft
Your roomie was responsible for getting all your friends to sign your card behind your back
And putting it on your door without you noticing
i still have a framed picture of catra on my wall ๐
Oh I don't own any HP merchandise
I own all 7 books but not any merch
My parents were okay with buying me books but merch was a bridge too far
I didn't see any of the movies other than the one my (high school lab) boss took us to
I had quite a bit of merch but became disillusioned with her nonsense over time
(this was pre current topic she rants about, she's had interesting opinions way before that)
childhood fandom interests do tend to be made by terrible people
my cringe fanfiction never makes it pass dramatic outlines
dont ask tolkien what he thinks of women btw
prose is a struggle
would be tough to, he's dead
(at least he wasn't as bad about them as his bestie CS Lewis)
i have since entirely stopped reading sci-fi/fantasy written by men. i learned my lesson too many times. its not worth it
my mum went back to her beloved childhood asimov books a few years back and very quickly came to the same conclusion
the last straw was when i started reading asoiaf. i didn't get very far
Hmmm
(jules verne is mildly less terrible but just doesn't feel quite like sci fi any more with how accurate it was
)
I really liked Dust
To be fair
That is the last sci-fi I read
I also really liked the potatoes book
the martian?
Yes
Maybe I should play modded minecraft today, finally
Voice in the back of my head: Or you could start a wind waker randomizer playthrough
well jules verne is just describing a nuclear submarine
very cool that he knew about those
I'm pretty sure that one doesn't have any major women characters, on account of it only having one major character /lh
I also hear good things about three body program
I watched clips of the show over my dad's shoulder and hated every moment
three body problem?
You might like dust
yeah
i read book 1 and 2 & did not like the ending of 2 very much so i never read 3
every time a "scientist" started talking I wanted to shake the dialogue writers (this is the show, I'm told the books are decent)
Look at this product I found on google.com https://g.co/kgs/yebsDKG
the chinese adaption of 1 is is pretty good
I thought three body problem was original chinese
although it sure takes a long as time
I need to read it
no like the chinese tv adaption
I'm guessing chinese tv adaptation
Oooh
this one
I should watch
theres a netflix one where they changed the biggest head on the right side to like 5 different characters who have romance stuff
three types of sci-fi/fantasy written by men:
- no female characters because the one character is a man (the martian)
- no female characters for inexplicable reasons (lotr)
- the story makes you wish it didn't have female characters (asoiaf)
- susan doesn't make it into heaven because she dates boys and wears makeup (narnia)
Dust has good female characters
LITERALLYYYYY
(I hope everyone reading this message knows that I'm not joking and that that's a real plot point in one of the later books)
i dont rly read scifi bc i am big weeb who just watch anime
but sometimes an interesting scifi anime happens
I need to read more fiction tbh
I've seen some arguments about another interpretation of this which kinda make sense, however I think if you have to actively look for another interpretation for that sort of thing it's definitely questionable on if the better version was the original intent
Also wasn't it literally the last book
i assumed everyone in the world had read the whole narnia series but i realize that many people here are likely blissfully free of it
I never read beyond the first few but I remember hearing about that
Actually, did I ever read any
narnia got fucking weird
Or is having watched the first two book movies gaslighting me
(so, it's a bit more complicated than that, but CS Lewis very much did have views that align with this interpretation)
Audio books! hisssssssss
(I just can't comprehend stuff easily when it's pure audio)
further up and further in
i only ever read 1 book of narnia what is it even about
the one where some ppl and their carriage all isekai and the lion sings the world into exist
also theres a no good very bad world
Okay I'll send you a paper copy of "the practical guide to cleaning and organizing with adhd"
(good book, would recommend)
We'll spare you the book on weightlifting
(I own a paper copy)
That sucks but not too surprising I guess. I only ever heard things painted in a positive light growing up what with being raised christian.
(I think)
You might actually kill me if I send you that
I've never really understood this. Like, I get if you're into fantasy including fantasy anime, but only being into anime, regardless of genre, but not non-anime of that same genre, seems weird
the chronicles of narnia are a series of stories set in the magical world of narnia detailing major events in that world, spanning from its creation to its destruction. this is ruined by the author's fervent belief that he has to write christianity into his story
Nah, the book will just get thrown in the nearest fire.
This one though... well, still difficulty of actually getting around to reading it ๐
so, depends on how many you consider canon... it's either about a group of kids having a fun adventure OR jesus coming down as a lion to teach children about christ
As much as I like physical books, digital format would probably be better in theory
(also a real plot point.)
see i did pick up on that just from binging narnia wiki this one time but is it the fun parts of bible like moses or guy eaten by whale or the lame new testament parts
In the first book, a group of children spend 50 years of their lives ruling a country as its absolute monarch, but slowly over the course of the series, seem to gaslight themselves into thinking it never actually happened
its so weird that narnia isn't just a world. its heaven incarnate and the most important world?? like come on cs lewis you let your religion fuck up your own worldbuilding
(not... entirely. Have you read the Magician's Nephew?)
(it's actually one of many worlds)
the witch was supposed to be just an evil lady from another world not literally satan what are you doing man
I don't quite get it either. The art style argument doesn't even make sense since anime can vary a bunch too.
Like, I definitely prefer the art style of more "typical" anime, but not because of it being anime. I just like stylized animated stuff and bright colors, so I enjoy western stuff, web comics (not, like, mainstream comics like marvel / dc for some reason), etc.
THATS MY POINT
Tbh I read most of it and am not sure i remember anything
looking at your list, I think I'm thinking of a different book with a concerningly similar name
narnia is supposed to be just one of many worlds so why does the series end on "btw narnia was the physical manifestation of heaven all along"
Look
Yeah, I seem to recall something like the lion basically saying he's narnia's depiction of jesus, and that he can be found in their original world too or something (though "jesus" is never mentioned by name)
wait but i thought the place the jesus lion came from is heaven
and that place is not narnia
Organizing Solutions for People with ADHD is the one I'm thinking of
Wait is narnia supposed to be actual heaven? I thought I heard the literal apocalypse was happening there in the last book
the last book would've been so much more impactful if it hadn't done all the weird off-the-rails shit and was just. the end of narnia
Yeah, I was under the impression jesus and aslan (the lion) were literally the same being, just had a different form in each world
so, looking into it, apparently he intended for aslan to be a different son of god/form of him
narnia ends and then everyone in narnia goes to heaven and they're shocked to discover that heaven looks like narnia but cooler because narnia was made in heaven's image all along
anyway cs lewis and jrr tolkien were sure both interesting people
...does narnia even have a distinct look?
Like isn't it just, like, more nature-y than our world
Am I forgetting some floating islands or something
no like geographically
like if heaven had eurasia and the americas and africa and shit
they journey all across heaven
like actually
Or did the lion give them a fly-over tour in the sky
no its just that you can walk anywhere pretty quick in heaven
cause its heaven
further up and further in
So what you're telling me is heaven has a fast travel mod installed
Dang it why is god hoarding all the good mods to himself
does that make you the in-universe god of stardew
I think I had a story once
Where "heaven" was "everyone's perfect world"
But, you can imagine that each person's perfect world didn't match up
So they would diverge over time
(If you can't tell, I like spooky)
So your heaven wasn't my heaven
And eventually everyone's little universe would fully diverge
that's good because my heaven has me on my own communicating purely by computer, but what about those weird scary extroverts whose heavens include other people
You know if christian heaven is supposed to be perfect that's a good point.
Adds to the "christian heaven doesn't make sense" list, alongside "won't we be sad for our family/friends who didn't get into heaven", "why can't I see my pet in heaven", and "wouldn't 24/7 worship of god be kinda boring"
(Every other person was just a figment of your imagination)
(it's a common one people make!)
(another one is, if heaven is free of sin, does that mean I have less free will there than here/am not allowed to do what I actually want?)
One I hadn't heard before!
The last one I mentioned is the one that I came up with myself. It certainly helps that I always found worship kinda boring though
Anyways
I've seen stuff re:this and the missing family/friends stuff explaining how when we're remade we won't want to sin or worry about those people (or forget entirely), which is concerning in it's own right
I like creepy stories where you take a concept to it's logical conclusion
...might be veering a bit too far into not-for-this-server territory
Ie, The Commune.
so dystopias?
Yeah, those are fun. Isn't most of Black Mirror supposed to be kinda like that?
(that are well built, not YA dystopias)
yes but it's very hit and miss, some episodes are fantastic and some are just "what if tech bad and people bad because tech"
I think I've watched one black mirror episode, ever. It was the VR one (are there multiple now?)
The general gist of The Commune is it's about a computer scientist who raises her kids in a closed commune to keep them away from modern technology
oh the one with anthony mackie?
that's generally considered past black mirror's prime
I don't know celebrities, so dunno
these guys
The only actor names I can think of off the top of my head are Doctor Who ones (mainly the ones playing the doctor, though a few companions as well)
if hell is where the other lesbians go then. well. you know
(And I actually pay some attention to pop culture)
While I don't even remember enough of the episode to know much besides I watched it, for some reason I feel like it was a white guy
Ie, I know who Sabrina carpenter is
hmm, that's the only vr episode I can think of / google seems to think of
oh wait
playtest!
you watched playtest
Sometimes I might recognize names! But that doesn't mean there is literally any association as to who they are or what they do. Just that I've heard the name before.
I've never seen black mirror
ie. the name you just mentioned atra
Should i
ofc the only one you watched is about game dev
meh
I mean, I've also talked about her music

The guy who shows up when I google that also doesn't look familiar, but I obviously don't recall much of the episode so....
playtest was decent for sure
Pretty sure I watched it on the family netflix account ages ago, not my current one to myself, so not sure if I can check
Okay, looking at the plot summary on wikipedia, I don't remember basically anything in the middle, but do some stuff at the beginning and the end, so that must be it
(specifically, the part about secretly taking pictures of the device is what first tipped me off, and then near the end the stuff about the phone call from his mom)
But who in their right mind would sign up for "a horror game where an artificial neural network personalises the experience to [their] fears". Like, seriously, ABSOLUTELY NOT! (Never really liked horror in general though)
some episodes are incredible examples of what you just described, at least in concept (men against fire is one I completely forgot about until right now when I looked through the episode list), some are "what if we replace currency with people giving each other five star ratings" (which is popular apparently but I hated as a concept because... why would we do that in the first place)
As much as I want that type of VR (if it could be done non-invasively), if the only option was horror, and there was no way for me to make non-horror, I would never touch it
Tbh I feel like dystopia works best when it could be a thing
One of the reasons I've been bouncing The Commune back and forth. Do you side with the mother shielding her children from advertising
I never watched this but I heard it's similar to that one Community episode with the MeowMeowBeenz app. But probably less focused on comedy given it's black mirror
similar concept to arkangel which was the first episode of black mirror I've ever seen, but as always, black mirror takes a slightly further "technology bad" stance
(btw, the thesis of the episode I initially thought you were talking about seems to just be... what if vr made you gay and cheat on your wife?)
Yeah
Well, that doesn't sound like it would be problematic at all. (big /s)
smithereens is extremely grounded in current issues though so I like that one, and I think the miley cyrus episode is massively underrated
I have no idea what they were going for (I have watched it) but that's sure what it ends up feeling like
I think the people who criticised the miley cyrus episode for starring her may have missed the detail where she was playing child star controlled by big corporations and her family
there might just be a commentary there
I feel like it could be done in a good way, like being able to explore yourself in an environment where society can't judge you for it. But this is black mirror so I doubt they were even thinking of trying to go for that
And, like, take out the cheating and stuff
(BTW, iro.)

Would you say you can't/won't stop being a fan of her?
You should watch her black mirror episode then! I think her being the person who played it is genuinely a really interesting aspect
magic died out 1,000 years ago after the war of the magi, sorry ๐
I googled deep dish pizza invention hoping it was older than I assumed so I could still blame losing magic on it, but alas ๐
(It's actually newer than I assumed, 1943???)
googles "big events in 11th century"
Hmm, closer to 900 years, but how about the first crusade? That sounds like a good reason for magic to decide to say "peace out"
if you want to bump it to the 13th/14th century you can blame oxford
Oxford? Isn't that like a university or something?
just don't blame chicago deep dish pizza. a perfectly cromulent pizza and delicious food that did nothing wrong
Look, you can believe what you want about it being food. But It. Is. Not. Pizza.
god dammit casey I know the post you're referencing but I'm still partially wondering if you're serious
Well, considering I don't know of any post I could be referencing, the latter. ๐ I'm a certified deep dish "pizza" hater
Unless you mean the oxford thing, in which case I'm serious.
Because of jumping between curriculums and what not when homeschooled most of my history knowledge is "mesopotamia" and "early american history" with not much in between (even if a lot of it was covered some, like rome stuff, or more recent american history, or stuff like the world wars)
i'm a big-tent pizza person. basically any configuration of cheese, sauce, and bread is a pizza, and basically all of them are delicious
Ichor considers tomato and cheese soup with croutons as pizza, got it
you know what? i do. it sounds yummy. pizza soup!

tomato and cheese soup with croutons is a pizza
- ichortower ichortower (Jump)
Okay the thing confused me
Oh well, I guess your full name is ichortower ichortower now
hmm
then yes, oxford is a university, but it was founded in the 13th/14th century
(the earliest part of its history is kind of lost)
I guess I'm wondering what they did to scare off magic
From the entire world at that
the first like three oxford colleges are in the 13th century but nobody is sure what order
oh, where do I even start
(Maybe the universe, but we haven't been to other planets to know if magic is still hiding there or not)
...it would actually be kinda hilarious if we went to another planet (even just mars) and found magic was a thing there
it's honestly hard to summarise other than to say they were oxford
Until we tried to harvest it for nefarious purposes (cough (tv show name) ||netflix she-ra|| )
So what you're telling me this is like that meme of wikipedia where a page table of contents is like "early life", "academic life", "controversies (23 subsections)", "references"
I didn't say all of those subsections had no subsections of their own
brief as in omitting many controversies
I mean for starters, one of the subsections should theoretically just be "Cambridge" /lh
I also found "Lamest edit wars" as a page on wikipedia and... wow
Like, why was there an edit war over "list of numbers that are always odd"????
blood were spilled over whether to capitalize "The" in "The Beatles"
Lnto
(This was a very entertaining page)
dont put cheese in soup
please..
Tell that to those deep dish "pizza" lovers
My hands down favorite soup is French onion
french onion soup is a pizza if you generously interpret "sauce"
(i am willing to do this for the sake of the pizza discourse, and potentially irritating casey)
omg
(And yeah I think this is real)
this should be the default packaging from now on
importing heinz ketchup from japan to usa seems... inefficient
Also this
It's kirby ketchup, you can't get it anywhere else. How is that inefficient, there's literally no other option
surely there's a printer somewhere closer to chicago
But that wouldn't be officially licensed, so it doesn't count
Also, the moment I send the document to my printer, nintendo lawyers will break down my door and take everything I own, so there's that
you mean like in my apartment (though I lost a cable for it and haven't used it since moving)
I assume casey will now try to sell me on ketchup being a vegetable
Ummm... Ketchup is a fruit
ketchup is a smoothie actually. made from ground fruit - check, has lots of sugar - check
You're one of those people who drink mayo, aren't you
I know there's no chance of you buying that idea, so...
I know when I'm in the mood for a refreshing fruit smoothie, I just pour ketchup straight from the bottle into my mouth
But it can be two different things in different categories. Like how a knife is a utensil and a weapon.
Everything has a dual purpose as a weapon if you try hard enough
Even a single wet spaghetti noodle?
John Wick could weaponize wet spaghetti noodle. It's canon.
What the hell do you put in your smoothies
I was joking, I wouldn't go as far as drinking ketchup or, gosh, mayo
in terms of unhinged food habits the most I do is eat chili salt by itself as a snack
oh I have fully unhinged food habits.
Selph, I've eaten the same chili at least 5x per week for the last six years
there are mild changes to chili recipe.
there have been several times where I just sat down and ate cheese curds drizzled with hot sauce
I only stopped doing that bc the grocery store stopped selling cheese curds
when I was Young and running a marathon, I would sit down and eat an entire wheel of brie. By myself
across 2-3 days
marathon training is No Joke.
Oh look, it's one of the periodic bloat-your-wishlist-even-more weeks. (Steam next fest)
Cheese curds are delicious, so that makes sense and is perfectly reasonable.
I prefer marinara sauce though
cholula my beloved <3
i like poutine but i can not with the cheese curds
i usually have it w like melted cheese/cheese sauce instead
https://retroachievements.org/game/25437
....this was a Skittles game?????
Also since when does youtube highlight the like button when the video mentions it
from what I recall of streams, it started out as a skittles tie-in but ends up barely involving them
supposedly they tried to cancel the whole licensing deal at one point
From what I saw in clips and other stuff when I first read that earlier, they powered a central game mechanic and also were pretty important to the plot.
Which side tried to cancel it?
iirc they were pretty much just "colored powerup things" without much central branding, but it's been a while, I might've misremembered
& the dev side tried to ask Mars(?) if they could just remove the branding and make it a regular game, or so I heard
I also saw this clip from the game which I thought was great

I wonder if that was the only joke they wanted out, given this wiki bit
A 300-page script, by lead writer and designer Andy Wolfendon, was written and submitted to Mars, which only asked to change a joke, utterances of "damn" and "remove all the snakes from the game." When Braswell asked for clarification, they said that there could be snake-like creatures, but no actual snakes.
Snake like creatures but no actual snakes? Huh
feels even funnier to get sassy about the only joke cut
and yeah, not entirely sure what the objection is there, except maybe vague religious implications
Congratulations you're getting basilisks instead. I'm sure that's much less terrifying to the average child playing it
Oh it's T rated, nevermind, we all know nobody under 13 has ever played a T game
Especially one themed around a candy tons of people love
(Though to be fair the game didn't seem to be marketed around skittles at all? Hence why I had never heard about this before)
they may have given up on skittles games after that one
also I like skittles except right now, because got Too Many on sale last week
It seems like non-gaming branded video games are pretty dead these days in general
Ship me some
there's probably like a pound left, have at 'em
I like starburst better (only the "standard" four flavors) though
Looking for an image for reference of this (because I do not have the weight of a skittle memorized) and I've never seen this button before
those were probably my favorite back when I did halloween/etc and had more reason to get candy
It seems like it's just the chat gpt type interface in google (or at least the one they had when it first started getting popular, I haven't tried since)
yeah, I saw that in a screenshot the other day, but it hasn't popped up for me w/ firefox+ublock+etc yet
(also 54oz apparently, one of these)
Tbh I generally assume (item) branded as (other thing) is unlikely to be good
The minecraft movie might not have been good in a "critical" sense, but it's a lot of fun, which is good in my eyes
So my address is....
I use sam's club for actual groceries and they were 50% off for some reason
and also they were out of stock on peanut m&ms, the one candy I do get occasionally
1212 Middle of the Night, Discord, USA. 12345
...why is amazon calling skittles a fruit chew. They're candies you put in your mouth and suck on, not chew! The chew ones are starburst!
(I've tried to do that with starburst to make them last longer - I'm not very successful ๐ )
skittles are worse when chewed, but you can
I was never a big fan of, uh, most bars besides payday
as in I eat some if we do halloween and have a pile of leftovers
(also re the skittles game, now that I think about it, the streams I saw were by the guy who made the achievement set
)
I'm not a huge fan of eating just chocolate, needs to be with something.
Except white chocolate, which transcends the boundaries of standard chocolate
Jelly beans also good
though twitch jettisoned archiving lately, so the streams are probably gone
same, wish it was easier to get Panda licorice here
Also sour kids. Also peach candies
After a thorough google investigation, this doesn't sound like that much. ๐ At once, sure, but spread out across a week or two?
Ooh! I saw someone use jellies like that instead of running gels which might be a good idea
Last time I had running gels they were so sweet. Toooo sweet
okay but what if I don't have impulse control and it's like 3 days
Yeah, I get why from a business standpoint, but it seems really weird after having it for so long
Like, cloying and too much sugar and not enough watwe
If the problem is impulse control it sounds like having that much left isn't a problem since you clearly aren't tired of them yet ๐
So mail me some
I gave you my address early
Real atra address trust me
okay okay, they're on the way, and iirc mostly purple left
I see it's midnight snack discussion hours
kind of about a tie-in game, but I know more about actual candy
Do different skittles have different tastes
second worst kind
technically? I think? it might be psychosomatic, but it's more notable than some
Also my favorite midnight snack is a wedge of that spreadable cheese
They definitely have a different taste
Hate getting a purple when I'm in poor lighting and think I got a red
It's been literally years since I've had skittles
nothing beats midnight ramen pack for me
sometimes I eat them raw even
I am prone to grabbing reese
Fuck yeah
Ramen into the microwave
Clearly I need to get some starburst in next grocery order
cooking linguine is my default, so I rarely end up with much ramen/etc
(And I always get the bags, not the stick of them)
Also, what the heck, since when do starburst lollipops exist
What about sour patch kids
On the note of starburst spinoffs, RIP starburst gummibursts, I miss you so much
I don't like sour candy
my sibling always loved those, but they were kinda whatever to me
Did you ever take two Starburst and swirl them together
...why is starburst requiring me to enter this information to browse their website
That was the only way to eat Starburst when I was a kid
I always ate them two at a time, yeah
only sometimes actually twisted, but close enough
I actually have always hated multiple starburst flavors at once. It just merged into some kinda bubble gum-y tasting mess (which I didn't like)
clearly they need your age to see if you're old enough for grownup flavors
Yes but first you have to squish them together
dont ask me what grownup flavors are
I don't want alcoholic starburst, I want my sugar cubes rectangular prisms
at last, alcoholic candy
morning black coffee at desk job flavor
This website is insane. Starburst cotton candy? Starburst fondue?? Starburst ASMR???
(Influencer stuff, not actual products, if that last one didn't make that clear)
Why do they have one of those carousel type things that requires dragging to move between as if phones are the only browser type to exist
Please
Starburst that tastes like my tears
"starburst fondue" just sounds like "caramel but with food coloring"
You can tell I'm easily peer pressured
Peer pressured into rolling Starburst
Into running, eventually a marathon
Into running linux
Into making friendship bracelets
Knitting in class and in student group meetings
(iirc in my case that was natural, like "too many reds, maybe adding yellows will help"
)
For me it was a summer camp thing
Just how I would always pack a skirt for wear a skirt day.
yellow is the best starburst flavor
next best is orange
next best is pink
last best is red
iirc pink>yellow>orange>red for me, but it's been a while
Actual starburst products besides the main ones (types, not flavors), objectively in order from most acceptable to least:
- Minis (reasonable, but promotes combining flavors too much - if they were separated by flavor that'd be different)
- Jellybeans (see above, except why have jellybeans and minis? I guess jellybeans might be harder but that makes them even worse)
- Gummies (a blight on the memory of gummibursts, but fine in a timeline where gummibursts never existed)
- Sorbet ice cream (odd but okay)
- Swirlers (an abomination - literally two flavors swirled into a stick like a non-curly, soft candycane)
Also there is a recipes section on the website. What in the world is wrong with them
What the heck is wrong with you, yellows are the worst ones!
(Can you tell I have Opinionsโข๏ธ about starburst)
don't mind me, my sense of taste is all over the place anyway
My flavor preferences have shifted from time to time but yellow has always been the worst
What is yellow. Banana?
Lemon
When I was a kid I liked those fruit shaped candies
yellow and orange taste very similar bc both citrus
Oh I'm gonna take the yellows then
yeah, lemon, I'm actually bad with the faux-banana candy flavors
Let's see.
(though I love runts, those just don't taste like bananas at all)
I like sour skittles
And the period where I didn't like the pink ones because of the cultural pink=girly that is implanted into every american child via osmosis, which mainly was a problem because of the uncomfortable feelings the thought of that brought me. Gee, I wonder what those were
I'm absolutely a fan of way too much citric acid
You're wrong
Currently:
- Orange or strawberry (depends on my mood to be honest)
- Cherry
- Lemon
Especially the sour ones
Stop correcting my numbering in markdown discord, that should've been 1, 3, and 4
where im from yellow candies are usually pineapple
Don't know what they are
Unless it's literally just actual peaches in ring shape cuts
In which case never tried
Tbh if I can get my foot to ducking heallll before fall I think I want to take peach rings with me on my runs
Banana laffy taffy was one of my favorite flavors ๐
pretty sure I've never tried peach rings yet
probably would've been averse as a kid anyway, but they were just never Around
my fiance likes them
I used to buy the trader joes espresso beans
Yeah I might've been averse too, the branding is too close to actual fruit
And eat half of them in the week before finals
I can't stand those, they were the leftovers from halloween a couple years ago
the texture's good and I loved the pinks, but yeah, fake banana flavor is offputting
Ioveee the trader Joe's little teensy jellies
I'll buy those for the office every now and then...
I don't remember being fond of runts, but nerds were great. Probably 75% sugar clumps, but yummmm
I'm this way about grape candy
Sour patch kids
I love grape jelly
another of my sibling's faves, but those always tasted slightly odd to me for w/e reason, hard to pin down
Gushers especially the sour ones
runts are probably my favorite but also weirdly hard to find here
Nerds are great
Also nerds is for some reason reminding me of fun dip. Those were good, and my dad really likes them
Oh my god I used to love runts
oh, I had those like a month ago
they get a bit samey, but they're fun
Haven't had them since summer camp in middle school
You know despite my starburst gummiburst evangelism I've never had gushers
In middle school I also used to do math competitions where they would give us sooo much sugar
And oreos
Gushers in my memory are basically just those candy they tried to make seem cool in tv commercials for teens (and I didn't watch much tv as a teen, that was mostly when younger that I saw them)
Mike and Ike I like despite the fact that they taste like wax
In general I like
- Sour candy
- Chocolate
- Peanut butter
- Fruit flavored sour things
- Things people peer pressured me into doing
Ie, eating Swedish fish
Swedish fish???????????????????????????????????? I always hated those
(also I have regrettably few opinions on Trader Joe snacks because,)
(I'm glad what I got peer pressured into was walking barefoot in Boston and also running linux.)
once in a while I end up in chicago and it's a good place to grab stuff, but yeah, rare
Uh. I wonder if the font choice for the marketing was part of the problem. (3rd image on this page) https://www.instacart.com/products/212324-starburst-original-gummiburst-candy-6-oz
Oh, you're in Chicago too?
across the indiana border, but I have family in the city itself, yeah
I'm in chicago right now! (For the next few weeks anyways, I made it through one and a half years here though)
Hey I've driven further for worse
Skittles has gummies?
Knit club is literally a 40 min drive in each direction
Sweet tarts has gummies? THAT is just wrong
Sammmmmeeeeee
Oh oh oh also I like gummy worms
Especially the sour ones
the other half of my family is like, equidistant in the other direction, so we usually meet on that side (or here)
they can escape the city traffic via the train
Tl;dr if you put candy in front of me there is a 99% chance I will like it
i've taken that train!
Whoopers too
they send me email updates forever now
about how they're working really hard to make the train better or something
I just don't like paying for candy
they seem very earnest but also keep having to apologize
I think the last time I was in chicago was 2020, so I blocked the spam and haven't had the app on my newer phone
the lake shore one that is, never used the other routes yet
I walked around that area repeatedly
Found my gym ๐
La fitness signature too, one of the fancy ones
I've never been into an LA fitness signature in Texas
(The one on my commute is a normal one but I like the zumba class so.)
the only gymโข๏ธ I've actually been a member of is a roller rink
I was way into that as a kid, then just ended up using an old treadmill
I would have to drive markedly out of my way to go to the signature
I can't stand treadmills
I fell off one when I was in high school
actual walks/jogs outside are a lot better, but it works in rain/snow
and if I really want to be looking at a video
I could never stand winter exercise
sun doesn't get to me much though
Once when it was raining and I ducked into a Starbucks to dry off they gave me a free coffee because I looked like a drowned rat
No, if I'm doing indoor machine cardio it's elliptical, bike, rowing machine, or stairmaster
Zumba class is more fun if less efficient than all of the above
we've got a rowing machine around too because my dad loved those, but my form's still pretty bad with it
(loved as in he's still here, but has a heart condition & shouldn't touch the thing)
Another time I was running around Harvard (readers note: I did not go to harvard) at night some guy kept following me ๐ฆ
my university had similar issues, though by the time I was attending, every sidewalk had those panic box things & a cop parked in sight
It wasn't a problem at the school I was going to because I just ducked into our underground tunnels
But I would roam pretty far while running
To Harvard. To the Target. To the knit store. Around to the hospital, down the river.
Everyone is lying about this it seems (either the search results lie or the site says they are out of stock)... except one local grocery store on instacart.
...do I make an order with them just to see if it's real? And if is... given how long it's been since they were made (I can't find a specific year anywhere but I know it's been ages).... do I trust them (the candy, not the store)
I know why itโs true, but I still find it fascinating that a bunch of people across the country from each other still have extremely specific locations in common
sounds like they forgot to delist it, but maybe worth checking
Maybe, but the possibility is there....
And other stuff mentions being out of stock
(also I'd probably walk for longer if I wasn't in the suburb dimension
there are some neat river access spots, but no shops within 30 min)
When I lived in the outskirts of Durham I straight up lived in the mountain to sea trail
I don't know if that was intentional or you meant division, but I'm going with the former for the sake of whimsy
So I would run it so often
I guess division makes sense, but yeah, dimension
there was a grocery store here that I walked to sometimes, but they moved out and were replaced with a hardware store, so ๐คท
There is a lake I like going by
But it's a tad bit more than two miles to the grocery store
Which isn't bad by atra standards
(In Durham when I had the free time I would walk to the grocery store.)
It was about two miles but two miles of forest trails so lovely
And not two miles of suburbia under the Texas sun
.quickpoll Should casey risk ordering the potentially sketchy long-discontinued beloved candy she has missed for ages? (starburst gummibursts)
(Watch it be fine but not live up to the nostalgia, as things from childhood often do)
(I keep meaning to fix up the bike so I can bike to the grocery store.)
...why does freeze dried starburst exist
It's good outdoor exercise
I'm currently still on low impact exercise
And absolutely devastated by the lack of outdoor exercise
Like, for a lifelong runner...three months? This sucks
I'm choosing to interpret these messages in isolation and ignore context of atra's previous message
Weekend after next. Fix up the damn bike so you can bike to the grocery store
Atra, you can do it
I should also do that if, uh, they still work
my sibling's got The Best One elsewhere to commute with sometimes
Dad gave me his old bike and I think it needs new inner tubes
Which isn't hard
God I wish I could bike to work
It's not impossible distance wise. 14 miles (about an hour)
It's just I don't want to get run over by a car doing 55mph
yeah, it's still an issue of distance here, plus the bad sidewalks in the commerce area
but they moved into an actual town, so it's like 5 minutes by bike to their current thing
How did we get from certified-health-risk "different arrangements of sugar and/or high fructose corn syrup" to... exercise ๐
The last time I've been off running for sooo long was when I sprained my ankle
I'm in chat, Casey
I'm (mentally) working off the 2000-or-so calories of skittles from this week
All I do is work and exercise
And ask me how packing is going periodically
I really wish mentally intensive tasks were a good way to lose weight ๐
Amazing
rotating asset formats in my mind has yet to make me lose weight, unfortunately
What about rotating asset formats on the treadmill
(shouldn't complain because I lose weight pretty quickly when I try
I just, uh, have trouble doing that)
I should be doing that
Programming a bajillion different ideas since the dawn of stardew modding has definitely not substantially affected my weight (at least in a positive way, I'd need to go a long period of time without to have a separate test for if it changes anything - the trend so far as been "up")
Tbh some of my best thinking is when I'm swimming because I can't get distracted by anything
Yeah, I really like food (that I like) ๐
Many of the silly things I come up with (like the word encryption thign the other day) come from going to the bathroom without my phone (which is basically almost always since even if I have it I never use it, beyond checking a notification that appears while in there)
Well you also have hiatuses
Also to be fair this is the context I've been looking at sugar in
Like
What's a good replacement for gu
Not that I'm training nearly hard enough for gu to be involved ๐ฆ
I don't know what gu is but since you used a u twice I assume you're not talking about some generic goo
For proper street races I bring some of these along
For any length 15k or longer
5-10k doesn't need them
I also take them to >20mi practice runs but I havent done one of those in six years and ||I miss it so badly||
(In between 9 and 20 mi practice runs I bring pb and j sandwiches)
But gu is fundamentally just easily digestible sugar
And caffeine which i can get via espresso beans
my only frame of reference for that are my friend's sketchy "weight-lifting energy drink" things
I think my calves are actually visibly smaller than they were three months ago
Which usually I don't care about like visually you know
But like
I think I'm losing progress ๐ฆ
same happened to my dad after a break, it seems rough to get all the relevant muscles back to size together ๐ซ
I'll get it back - muscle memory is pretty strong - I just miss running
I had the lines of my quads back too ๐ฆ
And I usually never take off running except for sickness or injury ๐ฆ
That sprained ankle really only took three months
I got a protein monster once
Never again
I tried exactly 1 packet of suspicious anime-branded mix because my friend got a lot for free
can't recommend either for the taste or feeling
and a basic monster in like college, but uh, hadn't seen they make them with protein and such
I've heard good things about that, tangentially
(I supplement protein b/c is hard to get 70g a day.)
just familiar with the caffeine and psuedo-caffeine drinks more than actual nutrition
I've got some that are good until feb 2026, apparently
had to check because I usually drink too much diet soda instead
Tbh today was not a good day
Somewhere I managed to get food poisoning
Thankfully of the type where you just throw up twice and then you're okay
feel better soon
glad it's "just" that, usually how it goes for me too
family tends to get it worse
But, it effectively meant I didn't keep lunch so I ended up having to raid work's snack collection at 4pm
(I could have gone home but I didn't feel up to driving.)
Meant to leave earlier but got sidetracked lol
I know Iโm an Apple fanboy, but man
wow that's nasty
did they just have an ai round all corners
that'd be an interesting choice
"if you don't pay us money you have to give us permission to sell your data" is a sucky business move
GDPR would like to have a word if this website is available here
Latest US news, world news, sports, business, opinion, analysis and reviews from the Guardian, the world's leading liberal voice
The difference is that one governing body will actually take a sizeable chunk out of them for it.
the annoying thing is that it's the guardian so they're going to keep on pretending this is in the name of ethical journalism
what happened to "always free" or whatever they used to say
I've seen this on a few news sites, and I just always immediately put them on my do-not-click list.
same, I just didn't expect it from the guardian (not because they're angels but because they like to pretend they are)
like, I wasn't too shocked about the daily express or whatever it's called
This genuinely prompted me to check a few UK paper sites, and... the Mirror doesn't seem to have a cookie popup at all?
hold on, paying doesn't even make it ad free! the audacity of asking for streaming service money and not even disabling ads...
That one does not shock me.
so the guardian really just went "either you give us your information or you give us your information", huh
tbf it's the mirror, if you try to complain they'll probably send piers morgan to tell you you're abandoning british values or something
The ICO does have the same teeth as a DPA, to be fair...
Very tiny annoyance: Sometimes I want to move back 5 or 15 seconds in a youtube video (text that disappeared too quickly, random cat spotted, etc.) and if it's a long one I can't really do that without going back a whole minute or two.
(Finally watching the hbomberguy plagiarism video for the first time)
(And no, holding the "go back a frame" key binding is not useful for that, since youtube clearly throws most of that away pretty quickly and so constantly has to rebuffer as you go backwards)
J/L does 10 seconds, and left/right does 5 if that helps?
Amazing, thank you. Hope I don't forget this in 5 minutes
But... why j and l? My first thought was vim keybindings (because developers make these things after all) but that's down and right apparently, so that doesn't really check out
Video editor key bind convention!
Oh, huh
K also pauses/resumes as part of that same convention. The letter ones work anywhere on the page too.
(If you drag the progress bar up you can seek pretty much frame by frame)
Ope, I missed this
And yeah, the frame by frame seeking is horrendously slow for... no reason?
It's fine until it tries to go past the 1-2 second buffer that is still in memory
For me, it's immediately bad for backwards, even 5 frames.
That makes sense, I wondered about that but didn'tn want to bother testing
Maybe I got lucky when I tried it a moment ago, because that's definitely happened to me before too
#making-mods-general ๐
HOW IS MY WINDOWS START MENU ALWAYS BROKEN
Because you're using the standard one instead of a modded one, I'm assuming
Mine was like that until I got a windhawk mod
looked it up, waow, a mod manager for windows
Here's my riced up Windows 11
what is windhawk
will my employer be mad at me for using it lol
I was using 7+ Taskbar Tweaker as long as I could.
boo
Windows kind of killed ricing for me. It's so much more difficult and shit breaks constantly.
Tbh the registery edit that restores the win10 menu is good enough for me
And the windows 10 right click menu
But also
I don't understand the new right click menu. Like I understand that the old one was being abused with random stuff being inserted into it but like... why is Rename not even on it
My windows 11 machine is used to ssh to a Linux machine 80% of the time
Yeah. I can hate Windows all I want but it's cool they leave this stuff in. They have this, like, insane commitment to backwards compatibility. Probably begrudgingly.
renaming a file is a very basic usecase
now you gotta either do the funky text click thing or F2 or shift right click for the real menu
I understand the right click menu redesign but it seems like a disaster. The whole argument for accessibility and it being easier for noobs falls apart when a normal user has to click "show more options" more than once.
Rename is just an icon on the top most of the time.
Although I believe anyone if they say it doesn't show up.
there's icons on the top?
Yeah.
sigh I'll turn on my work laptop to check
I have all this stuff disabled so I am going off of an internet screenshot for this one.
But when I have to use a regular Windows device it's usually there for me. I have so many friends not notice this.
It would be so much less obtuse if they just had it in the list normally with the name.
Totally understand why they did this though.
I understand the right click changes, but I think I'd be more receptive of it if they had actually cleaned up all the other old UI running around
Windows UI looks like what people think Linux UI looks like, with random bits everywhere
To their credit they are doing this.
oh that thing
You still have a lot of advanced settings hidden in the old menus but it is what it is.
it does indeed appear in the menu
I always ignore that 3rd button cause I had no idea what I was looking at
what's the point of them being there and not just normal options with text
Probably some feedback they got was the context menu was too bloated and confusing. Which I get it. You're going from 1000 options to 7 when you right click.
now that I look at it more closely I understand why that's supposed to mean rename
I have to use the registry to remove so many useless context menu items.
I will never need to use Share or Restore previous version.
from a distance it looks more like a partially unwrapped eraser to me
oh shit the candy bar button
partially unwrapped candy bar works too
who knew that was rename man
I've discovered new things
meanwhile I've just gotten used to F2 out of necessity
Why F2 when you can use oil.nvim
It's dumb. It's probably OK if the context menu sucks. You don't have to fix every minor problem.
Or just better tools to manage your context menu to remove a lot of the bloat Windows and other programs add.
that looks sick as hell ngl
how wide is your monitor??
It's a 49" diagonal which I think is equivalent to two 21" monitors side-by-side
long boi
It's no different than a dual monitor setup, but I prefer it to lose the bezel
I've been meaning to get a monitor but I need to mount it on one of those swivel stands so I can move it out of the way when I eat
(desk is also the kitchen table, which only seats two, quite small)
For gaming, I can treat it as a single monitor, but it can also operate in split-screen mode where Windows sees it as two monitors
Older games maybe, but otherwise everything seems to work
Sometimes games add bezels to the side
For older games, I've sometimes had to mod the UI so that they're more in the center of the screen
.... why the dickens are all my screenshots on onedrive I could've sworn I'd stopped backing stuff up to it
BASAFAJKGAGJKAHGJLGH
flawlesswidescreen.org has all the tweaks needed to make older games work
It's so funny because I have a less insane ultrawide now and it hurts my neck. I was also getting major nausea for the longest time before I figured out a window arrangement that worked for me.
should've guessed there'd be lots of resources to get things working, lol
I've also just given up and run games borderless at 1440p most of the time.
hmm
onedrive causes windows explorer to crash if it's trying to delete files from its servers
all the more reason to simply stop using it
(I should mention, I stopped backing up to it ages ago, but the stupid program remains on my laptop)
(It won't let me remap the Pictures library folder back to the default location, so I'm probably just gonna back everything on it up to my local disk, nuke onedrive, then do the default settings again)
(it's the first thing I uninstall when I install windows)
(I got 1TB of space thanks to being on a family plan with my uncle so I was using it, but now I have Proton so like
might as well use it and not have things on onedrive and gdrive anymore)
on the other hand, I found out yesterday that the right click menu on windows 10 causes crashes whenever programs add a few items to it because it ends up too long and gets corrupted somehow???
I found this out when I had to try to fix windows suddenly not letting me make new folders
(how did the registry value for that even break...)
I just need someone to make a (real) Photoshop alternative for Linux, and I'm going to be completely set.
very long screen
What's the pop up application launcher?
That's part of PowerToys
The Application Launcher is one of the built in modules for Command Palette, and I have a few 3rd party ones to integrate with "Everything" for file search and one to launch any of my VS solutions.
Me trying to run photoshop for class on my school macbook
I don't think I ever not wanted in-line numbers in my ide
Why is the default false
Also I'm starting to believe no one should implement their own ide
I want line numbers in all text editors. If I'm writing anything, I want to be able to quickly determine where I am.
which ide committed this sin?
i mean, vim
Is vim considered to be an IDE?
with enough willpower and other people's configs yes
Cadence
Not only is line numbers not default, you can't make them default
bad
Also why I was griping about the text editor even existing
When instead they could have simply launched my preferred text editor
The end-all-be-all editor will be Microsoft's Edit
Could have just launched vim
microsoft edit will change everything
it doesn't have any configuration options whatsoever and that's how it should be
It's opinionated with all the right opinions
are we talking GNOME
I mean, the only thing it really needs is AI
...was the windows start menu made by bethesda???
I may or may not be judging you for that on screen mouse/keyboard (or is that just for recording?)
Also no a fan of tiling window managers (never used one though), outside of maybe a steam deck with a wider screen
Yeah I hate the new right click, one of the first things I turned off when I got this PC
If so, can I pay for start menu horse armor?
I got powertoys at one point but use almost nothing from it - can't even recall why I got it. Maybe the File Locksmith module.
I suppose every once in a while I use the double-left-control for mouse highlighting thing. But I didn't realize that was power toys until now
what does the double left control do
Might I point you to windowblinds? (Or whatever the equivalent is these days)
oh
why don't you just right click
which would bring up a menu, right where your mouse is
Because you can't always trust clicking not to do something
And isn't universal - like, some spots in some windows don't have right click menus
whooom
(It went away when I clicked it looks like, but it seems to work with any keyboard key for turning off as well)
...I wonder if there is a modern version of something like windowblinds
I don't use wallpaper engine because my desktop is always 80% covered anyways
But the window themes...
Looking at windhawk since it was mentioned earlier... is this what I think it is???? https://windhawk.net/mods/taskbar-grouping
I have my taskbar configured to not group apps into a single icon, and also have window titles showing down there. But I can't rearrange windows in a single program and I hate that
Especially when firefox restarts and decides to rearrange the order windows are in
just to spite you
isnt windowblinds still a thing (havent used it)
always have been i think
Well yeah, but I somehow doubt my license from who knows how long ago (also old email address for extra irrecoverability) still works
...how has the site with windowblinds skins not changed
Since when does any corporation not redesign the entire website every few years
According to the steam reviews of windowblinds (not sure why it's on steam now...), a lot of people have tons of problems with it...
freaking krita is on steam apparently
I have been rather out of the loop on ricing windows on account of well, not using windows
wdym windows have WMs now
when are we getting compiz on windows
Update
If I set some arcane environment variables
I can get vim
According to my boss this is fragile but I am willing to try it
What does ricing windows mean. Are we putting rice on top of our harddrives now
That's weird
(it's a term from people who used to customise cars as far as I know. It's essentially aesthetic customisation)
(but for Menโข๏ธ)
I don't call haphazardly throwing together a bunch of old code to make something new "souping", but okay
(this just in: all of casey's mods are made of soup)
I think it might technically fit, but my personal perception of soup requires it to be served hot
gazpacho
(At least intended to be hot, I'm sure there are many people who eat cold soup, just like cold pizza)
.g gazpacho
(served cold, intentionally!)
See, that's what I mean by my personal perception. It might technically be soup, but it's not what I think of as soup since it isn't hot
Good morning
why are we reviving the soup debate
I feel like men can be aesthetic
anyway I have an assignment chart for this
And before you ask, it's not cereal either
I'm passionate about asking everyone about it
Cereal is milk exclusive.
"cold soup can have milk" no, the milk has to be the only liquid
This does mean that pouring milk into a bowl of croutons is technically cereal, but that's basically what the shredded wheat cereal is anyways
| Sweet | Savoury
---------------------------
Hot | Hot Cocoa | Soup
Cold | Cereal | Gazpacho
(These things)
I don't feel like this is a fair chart, since hot cocoa is intended as a drink and not a meal
I was sad about my calves yesterday
the fancy Belgian chocolate people drink it with a spoon out of a bowl
That's irrelevant, otherwise we're putting things like sandwiches and food skewers on your chart
they're not liquids
And I do that with my chocolate shakes when the delivery order doesn't give me a straw, doesn't change anything
What % of liquid is required to fit on your chart
it absolutely does, it puts it on the consumable liquid alignment chart
substantial%
See, I was understanding this as a food alignment chart, not "subset of liquids that can be consumed chart"
Title your charts properly and this whole argument could've been avoided
you see I considered it
How definitive and not vague at all, perfect
but I was hoping to avoid naming a chart "consumable liquids"
There's a joke here to be made about the whole thing about putting soup in a thermos to eat throughout the day
I'm suddenly realizing the... other things that might fit in that category, so understandable
Ignoring the first implication, "Everything is consumable at least once"
Completely unrelated but I can't wait for the next anime season to start. I'm tired of having a three day period each week with nothing new
What soup debate
is cereal soup
Morning, casey!
Okay
similar debate to the hot dog debate (is a hot dog a sandwich)
kinda weird that we think about one as the soup debate (the category) and one as the hot dog debate (the item)
A hot dog is a particular subtype of sandwich along with submarine sandwiches
Itโs also kin to tacos
but is cereal soup
I'm far too employed to care
Cereal is soup
the whole thing is weird. why do we need to argue about the status of hot dogs
are they delicious? (no) that's the metric that matters
ran out of other things to argue about that aren't depressing
When I first heard this argument, the answer was โitโs collegeโ
Hot dogs are not delicious but the Costco hot dog is great value
Can't recall if I showed it here, found this last time we discussed adjacent things https://cuberule.com/
Excuse you, hot dogs are delicious. But only the beef ones, and not with all the crazy toppings they like here in chicago
Where else can you feed a family of 6 for under $10?
Tacos, on the other hand, are delicious
Unless you live outside the range of good tacos
In which case they taste like disappointment
Northeastern US is notably worse than California
so do all things with no structural starch belong to the same category
Needs further study
Aw yea #food-alignment-charts
Plz award grant money to study by eating tacos
They're all salad, what didy ou not understand
Also the ethoslab video of the month dropped, brb for like 30min
God costco
So do u think sushi burrito is a sandwich
But is burrito sandwich
Nah burritos are a different category
I'm very happy that this person put toast in a category other than toast
Well thats a toast sandwich
quesadilla (non-folded)
this is a load-bearing caption. take away this person's computer
What
Anyways
How goes programming, programmmers
God I miss Anna's quesadillas
the non-stardew thing i'm working on is coming along! finally past the frustrating part of the piece i'm working on
Yayyyyyyyyy
Oooo, what are you working on?
I'm sooo fucking tired
I should really work on one of my mc mod ideas. Or at least one of my game ideas
minna ni naisho dayo (sorry i don't have a japanese IME set up rn)
a secret to everyone
My understanding would be equally lacking if it was in japanese characters
Oh
Well, guess the translation doesn't help then
"it's a secret to everybody", what the moblin says in OG zelda
Can you give a hint
I love ichor secret projects
Or I guess "Would you", unless you're literally incapable of it
Ichor is literally incapable of it
This lobster roll khachapuri is a mash-up of two of my all-time favorite things to eat โ buttery New England lobster rolls and golden-baked Georgian cheese-stuffed flatbread โ and the results are stunning. If possible, start these the day before you plan to bake them, since the homemade dough really benefits from an overnight fermentation. E...
will we ever find out
maybe!
can you give a hint
it's written in C
Well played, Mr food wishes.
I meant a hint as to the hint product not on a technical level ๐
I'm just gonna assume it's something low level like arduino stuff then
higher than that, but lower than a PC
ok im not too far with the .so then
GBA?
my feet
IchorSecretKernelModule
SNES?
atra took notes
Oooo, kernel module? That sounds exciting
it was super effective
i defy anyone to bring up a C compiler for the SNES. the cpu is so not made for it. the GBA on the other hand is arm7tdmi
Is this a challenege to get C# (runtime, not AOT) running on the SNES I hear? /s
