Brb sending this to my parents with the caption "Huh"
i may live in the netherlands now and finally saw snow in November, but I grew up wearing sleeveless tops and shorts in winter
Quill, I would bop around in a skirt and a t shirt in a Boston winter
is this one of those ND "oh my god none of my experiences are unique" moments?
my favourite is breaking people with adhd's minds by informing them I know they have said the sentence "caffeine actually makes me sleepy!" at least once
My metabolism keeps me warm
or asking people with adhd what joint/connective tissue disorder they have
Ah. To be young and dumb again XD
Oh yeah
the only people that walk around in summer clothes in my current city in the winter appear to be Canadian
Lidocaine escapes on me
Proof:
(The image takes so much space because I just screenshotted the expanded version with the from Cleveland clinic comment. So I guess congrats iro, my parents have now heard of you)
mum look I'm famous
i'm not diagnosed with anything besides anxiety and depression but i do have a hunch i might have ADHD, unfortunately whe i asked my therapist about it she said you can only get diagnosed with ADHD as a child here, so tought luck for me i guess
Barefoot no jacket eating from the free food dunkin donuts put out at midnight
Ahhh to be young and dumb
dunkin :((((
go to a different country, get diagnosed, come back /lh
(they went bankrupt here, I miss getting a donut)
Freeeee dunkins too
Oh, thanks for reminding me.
Let's add "depression" to my brain's mental health spaghetti code from #programmers-off-topic message
...can i?
you have an eu insurance card, I assume
in which case yes, you can actually just go to idk
spain
and see if you can get on the list there
hmmmmm
kind of, diagnoses do somewhat transfer (as you know from other things lmao), but the first thing is to get a second opinion, because doctors sometimes just say that stuff for no reason
I have student insurance and can't register with a gp as a result
Tbh scarlett I personally have not even started looking at getting an official dx for...anything
there are still psychs who say you can't be autistic and have adhd
i just go to the clinic for internationals
Medicating me is touchy anyways b/c of the minimal medication bipolar thing
(don't even try the netherlands tho the psych waiting list is a few months long, I'm told)
over here you better go private for adhd diagnoses, otherwise good luck with that
it's expensive enough here without insurance, I don't wanna know what private care costs
My mom's two responses:
- "You toe-walk?"
- "Is there any doubt? 😂 "
She's not wrong, there are a lot of factors for me even if I haven't been diagnosed 😂
private being private insurance too, not just direct, but it honestly might be less than you think, though still a massive amount
ah
I've been doing the thing where I just read self help books and pretend lol
anyway, speaking of adhd
But also like, well, well
What would I do different with a real dx? Pretty much nothing
goodnight iro!
.......what.
They literally have a much higher than normal... whatever the term is for having both at once. Comorbidity comes to mind but "morbid" makes me think of death so doubt that's the right word
Night night iro
here's hoping I finish my exam before 4
Good night iro
(It doesn't help that many words I know how to use but not the formal definition)
Should I get boba y/n
comorbidity is correct, and yeah
it's an old requirement from like the dsm 3
i have until 9am tomorrow morning to submit but if I sleep now I'm gonna sleep like the dead so i can't
we're currently on 5 so... not really valid any more
Yes and then try to explain to me what it's like because i've never had it
Medicine is a really weird and dangerous profession to refuse to use latest info and only stick with old stuff
Like, imagine if your airplane engineers were using science from a century or two ago. Or nuclear physicists ignoring the existance of atoms and smaller
I like the stupid westernised boba and I will not apologise, I literally order chocolate milk with bursting mango spheres and no tapioca
(In particular, why creatine will falsely make your glomular filtration rate look bad)
I like mango tea with strawberry popping, no shame in it
but for real now night, I'm gonna shut off my computer before I keep messaging
Iro go eep
Iro I get southern boba
Hibiscus
what is southern boba
That sounds good if you exclude everything that isn't chocolate milk!
If you're not from the south you don't know how much we like hibiscus
hibiscus boba sounds very nice, i have to admit
I'm with you
I don't know what boba is besides chunky cold tea
I'm from the south, just not US south
I'm from the south (if FL counts) and I don't know.
My twin brother that is a professional tea snob probably understands what you're talking about though
not good coffee, but coffee
He probably considers boba as sacrilege or something
(if crumble sees this, fite me mate the coffee here ain't it)
Lol
Damn, it's popular in Thailand though
I must have misremembered
(karnataka grows most of India's coffee, and I lived a few hours away from the fields)
Coffee is not good away from the tropics
lol I certainly did not but I witnessed a lot of it
My twin also is a coffee hater.
I am too but purely for taste reasons, not because of tea superiority
Your twin is wrong
the dutch import it but not from india, so I can't find my preferred type anywhere
I just drink water
I've instructed DadQuill to bring me some
they're visiting in October!
bringing snacks and coffee!
until then, I'm waiting for exam season to end so bestie and I can go visit another city that actually has south indian restaurants
i want a dosa
I've earned it
nice big masala dosa with an entire cow's worth of ghee on it
I first read this as some sort of Nyqil type thing, which confused me on many levels. (Why is your parental nickname a medicine pun, does he function as medicine somehow? Or if it's not a parent nickname, how is medicine going to bring you anything physical (ie. not relief for your body or something))
Chewy cold tea!
FL kinda doesn't sorry
It's super popular in Georgia
God I'm so tired
he's an extremely capable engineer with an mba, calling him a contradiction is better than any medical pun
Oh atra it was friday today
English sentences with food types I haven't heard of (usually ones originating from not-America to be fair to my uncultured self) are always funny to me because it's like someone is playing madlibs, but they did it in another language and didn't expect the madlib to be english for some reason
I can stop reminding you if you want you know?
I was in MS through third grade, does that count? Or too far removed from the period of life I actually remember more than small fragments of?
there's potato in the tube
Just a potato?
I assume that covers "masala" and "dosa" but what's ghee
MS is more south
clarified butter!
Ghee is clarified bu-
Tbh casey I'm texan so I'm not really south either
Clarified butter? I'm assuming you don't mean clarified as in "I meant butter not ghee" because even autocorrect wouldn't attempt to do that
potato, onion, coriander, chilli, podi powder (i don't know what that is in english)
This is so funny to me considering FL's "center of mass" is further south than MS's
this stuff
idk how to explain it, really
Butter without the milk solids, casey
You can heat it up further without burning
God I'm so tired
So exhausted
If you melt butter the solids separate, ghee is what remains when you remove the solids
(dutch wikipedia insists an alternative spelling is "ghi" and no, Marijn, ghi is not a valid spelling how would you feel if i said an alternative spelling of Marijn is Marino)
y'all know ghee better than I do
Culturally American south
I just know it stinks when you make it
Do they consider marijna = marinara or something
I'm a damn good cook
When I care to be
(marijn is a dutch name, I just assigned it to the editor of this article out of spite)
I know culturally yeah but it's fun playing with different meanings of the same word (especially since south is typically thought of on its own as geography not culture) 😛
who is out here calling ghee ghi i want to find them and take them on in hand to hand combat
Ah.
This sound suspiciously like mozzarella and ricotta but heat instead of acid
Anyways. Casey do you like Indian food
The little I've had scared me because spicy. I'm your stereotypical white person when it comes to spice, you see.
(Taco bell mild sauce is probably as high as I'd like to go)
I've never had indian food
OH
that reminds me
I found an indian grocery store online that has indian foods and snackies
I ordered sweets and guavas and yum
I eat palak paneer and it’s usually p mild
I thought about buying guavas today but I wasn’t sure if they’d be good
butter chicken is milder than the taco bell mild sauce imo
I love spicy though
And I've actually had it home cooked not a restaurant - my faculty friend at the college I went to had dinner nights occasionally and invited me when they happened the last couple years of college (and the ones after that until I moved)
mine are still in their packaging, I didn't take them out today because if I did bestie and I would stress eat them all
Fucking love Indian food
Palak paneer may not be Casey food bc it has a lot of spinach otoh it is cooked very nicely and I would recommend it if you wanted to try a new food experience
if you visit you're getting boerenkool with a side of prawn masala curry I'm in a very weird culinary space rn
SAMOSAS
Update:
I get samosas from Trader Joe’s
Samosa is probably something you'll like casey
i have my grandma's recipe, I'll perfect making it soon enough
The hojicha was all fancy n stuff
valid, they're a lot of work
onion samosas or chicken or what's the filling of choice here
(i like beef ones and chicken)
I've also never made my own samosa
I feel like “thing wrapped with dough” is like, I know how to make it but also it takes like 5 hours so I buy it frozen
If you're wondering where he is on the tea alignment chart, I asked him recently and he was preparation neutral ingredient purist
Can't recall if I showed it here, for reference:
ask him how he feels about tea masala
A lifetime ago when I lived off the leftovers from student group meetings I loved it when we got Indian food
So matcha is tea but herbal tea isn’t tea?
Herbal tea is not a tea
I don't know what that is.
It is a tinseau
just got myself a box today, I'm very excited to use it
Tisane?
Tell me what a masala is in case he asks (he might know, but I don't know)
Tisane
meat/veggie wrapped in a dough wrapper and fried
That.
....ravioli?
Yup
Is it just meat?
it's ground spices, tea masala is specifically spices meant to go in tea
is orange juice tea
I guess ravioli isn't fried
I know this word only bc of our mutual friend 😆
this is a samosa
If it isn't this plant it isn't tea https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camellia_sinensis
Camellia sinensis is a species of evergreen shrub or small tree in the flowering plant family Theaceae. Its leaves, leaf buds, and stems can be used to produce tea. Common names include tea plant, tea shrub, and tea tree (unrelated to Melaleuca alternifolia, the source of tea tree oil, or the genus Leptospermum commonly called tea tree).
White t...
Samoas 🤤
observe the pyramid
witness the potato
imagine the rich aroma
Hibiscus not tea?
Fuck yeah samoas
and get hungry
Technically no
What about wintermelon tea?
If it isn't that one species it isn't tea
(note: this does not include chilli, if you put chilli in your tea you need help)
What if it’s just a little cayenne
Tiny tiny pinch w ginger and cinnamon
...
Cayenne is good in teas
that might work, I hate to admit
And nutmeg
christmas tea
Also 1.2 grams of caffeine powder
Is mulled wine tea then
official top 5 tea of all time trust
- Green Tea (leaf directly in the hot water pls)
- HK style milk tea (reverse imported from the bri'ish)
- Chrysanthemum Tea (ok this doesnt have any tea tea in it)
- Matcha Red Bean Milk Tea (tastes of degeneracy)
- The tea bags i throw into the pot for tea egg
I do ginger, honey and lemon when I'm sick, but my standard teabags are just normal ginger teabags
Updated update. (Later followed up with "Yes. Yes, to me it is sacrilege :B", still waiting on other "is it tea?" clarifications)
I do think boba is highly dependent on your feelings about chewy desserts
I happen to love chewy desserts
and how you handle texture, too
Maybe also secondarily your feelings on mixing textures
u can get TW style milk tea without tapioca tho
Like having a chewy thing in your liquid thing
i personally like sago or red bean more
I do like milk tea
my dad tried tapioca pearl boba and the look on his face confirmed my 15-year long suspicion that he has texture issues
mom liked it, on the other hand
Taiwanese soy milk tea surprised me w how good it was

technically?
Asl him about the mulled wine
Yr twin is v consistent w my tea snob friend 😆
I mean, the argument was is it tea, not is it good 😛
thats literally what the word means?
ye
i no longer trust this tea snob
Boba has tea in it! The way I drink it
but masala chai is just ginger and cardamom and cinnamon, usually
I actually bought real loose leaf black tea specifically to make better boba milk tea at home
I'm not sure I like that, but having a liquid thing in my chewy thing (like the old starburst gummibursts, RIP) is a different story
Unfortunately these days my caffeine tolerance is dreadful and I can barely handle black tea
But I still have it sometimes bc it tasty
they also put too much milk in so they lose points, but good tea nonethelss
Poll: sweetened condensed milk in tea?
If I stuff a pizza in a pot of soup, is it still pizza?
In coffee?
No but it is still soup
I'm in law school, I drink coffee black /lh
We have completely opposite ingredient sensitivities
I'm an engineer
(fr tho, I just prefer it black)
I can’t have black coffee it taste bad
What does alchohol have to do with tea?
He's incredibly busy right now (read: playing a TTRPG with friends, online), I don't want to waste his time with nonsense
I keep trying and it keeps tasting bad
I know the relative price of caffeine pills, coffee, and questionable caffeine powder you get on Amazon
Oh dear
I studied food law, I'm not touching the questionable stuff
(elective in my third year, it was quite a fun course)
This is why I don't like coffee, I don't like coffee flavor.
Just give me chocolate milk with caffeine injections instead (not that I really have any caffeine, but if I needed some, this would be preferable)
(But it wouldn't exactly help me stay awake given the whole ADHD thing)
My new apartment came with a coffee machine
I've never used one before aside from the one in bestie's apartment
Fascinating, was it generally furnished?
I've been experimenting with nespresso capsules as a result
Tbh I think engineers have a bimodal caffeine consumption
You're either. No caffeine
yep! targeted towards internationals with no guarantee of staying long enough to buy all this stuff
Was curious if he considered spices boiled in a liquid other than water still tea
Or, as my psych asked me once....how are you alive
I don’t have no caffeine!
I have a tumultuous relationship w caffeine
I do not like thinking about my rent, but it is convenient to just have everything
they even gave me pots and pans to use
which went into the dishwasher right away because I think the previous tenant did not know what soap was
Ew
Did you miss the tea alignment chart stuff. That sounds too much like ingredient neutral 😛
Quill do you guys not have a student housing center or smth
i keep finding remnants of their life in this house because the agent couldn't be arsed to clean properly before handing it over, and my perception of them is... poor.
this isn't even student housing!
it's general housing!
But is water an ingredient to tea?
Water is
So are tea leaves
Other ingredients can be added
But if you don't have those two it is not a tea
It may be a tisane
(we do have an huur commissie [rent commission] and I'm filing a report against my previous landlord once i get my deposit back)
My brother would definitely disagree on this. See: the boba saga above
Apparently I agree with Casey's twin
i have an angry dutchman on my side for filing the complaint, it's gonna be airtight
(Specifically, the boba tea saga, not the boba fett saga which I assume is The Mandalorian, or something)
(bestie actually studied dutch law, so he's very well-versed in the exact laws i need to get these guys smote)
I believe my brother would also consider this sacrilege akin to giving a demon communion or something
water infused water
Fair
I think in this case it would be baptising a demon
given that we're talking about water
most glasses of water are water tisane
Sudden incredibly dumb question (outside of mere doctrinal stuff): Would baptism be a working method of exorcism or otherwise destroying a demon, in a world with literal holy water and demons?

in theory
probably want to have the water blessed by a bishop instead of a random deacon yanked from the depths of the friary for it to really work, though
Like, the holy water would be powerful on its own against them.
But baptism should synergize and make it extra powerful or something right?
What if baptism powers up deacon-holy-water enough to work when it wouldn't normally?
I don't think a baptism would work on a demon though
the idea here is that the water simply dissolves them
Presumably deacon holy water is good enough for normal baptism, since I doubt they're gonna call a bishop every time someone needs baptizing
I thought the exorcism thing is just weaking them enough to banish them from the host not destroy them isn't it?
That's why I added the "or otherwise destroying a demon" part.
Like, if you did it on a demon's true form.
...whether you could actually make that happen is another question. Maybe knock the demon out first
There's also probably a difference between dunking baptism (like baptists) and sprinkle baptism (like lutherans)
But would doing the formal rite of baptism make it any stronger than simply applying the holy water normally
I mean afaik the baptism is to forgive the sins so i guess in this case it would just be a holy water bath ?
Follow up question: If it won't work on demons, would it work on fallen angels to make them not fallen anymore?
(this might be going into too controversial territory, as entertaining as i've found it)
I don't think so, since the point of the baptism wouldn't actually apply to the demon
I feel like doing a cannonball into a holy water pool wouldn't count as a baptism since there's no priest doing some rite or whatever
Oh, hmm. Good point. I wasn't thinking in actual religious context but more fantasy religious context
okay back to exam i go
RIP
I wonder if today will be the day I finally play modded minecraft instead of think about playing modded minecraft
i like cybersecurity law but this course needed tutorials with problem solving
not just lectures and then bam big problem case study at the end
I already have the modpack set up - a premade one with extra mods
Good luck quill, i'm gonna go to bed too
goodnight!
Everyone is abandoning me 😭
bestie's muttering to himself in Dutch now so I think we're gonna have to pick up the pace so we can go to bed
I'll be alone with my own thoughts 😭
it's 2am euro time, unfortunately
i'd be asleep if not for this exam and me getting nerve-related food poisoning earlier
Yes
Do it
Well now I'm not gonna simply because I was told to /s
(And if you said don't bother I would've gone: "oh, okay". There is no victory for modded MC)
Even if I were willing to cook (and hungry), grocery stores are probably closed (or closing very soon)
And I don't think a pizza made of hot dog bun crust, ice cream from inside a klondike bar sauce, babybel cheese, and hot dog topping would be very good
Everything except the ice cream sounds kind of legit
Pizza made from toasted bread w tomato sauce and cheese isn’t half bad
I mean I almost said "apple juice cheese" and didn't include a topping but that sounded a bit too extreme
But yeah if you want cheese on your hot dog and all you have is babybel that'd work fine
Not sure, but instacart is another story
Well they are still open on there and google maps says they close at 10 pm so who knows
Still not making pizza though
I bet it doesn’t anymore but the grocery by where I live now is midnight
Many places cut back during Covid and never went back
There’s definitely some that close at 8pm near me
Which feels so unfair when that’s going home time
Thinking nonsensical ideas, clearly
Thinking nonsense is fun!
(It seems like every time I go to the bathroom without my phone, crazy ideas erupt. Like that crytographic thing the other day)
(This time it was stuff re: one of my game ideas)
I feel like 9-10pm is common here
Grocery stores where I am close at 10pm
Everything else closes at 6pm, 9pm if it's the designated going out in the evening day, and sometimes at 5:30 on weekends
It's always funny when the "another day, another new cat subreddit" roulette triggers and when I open it up I see it's one that I'm already subscribed to but reddit just doesn't ever put them in my feed
Today's occurence: r/MedievalCats
Work has now deemed us too silly to be able to work task manager
Uh
I think this one I'll ask about b/c uh
task manager is blocked in our citrix environments which a lot of people work through which is fun
Clearly task manager can only be used by managers
tbf
I once used file shortcuts to get access to every user's files at school (and reported it appropriately! but then the head of IT support got pissy and tried to get me expelled)
so I don't doubt that there is a way to do it with task manager
That would hold more weight if they weren't individually issued windows laptops
also the only reason it worked was that he was incompetent so I would hope it doesn't apply haha
You did EXACTLY what I did...
good to know UK schools are just like that
Except I ended up doing work experience with the one IT guy, Steve. Everyone liked Steve. He had one of those... tying-people-to-train-tracks-in-a-cloak moustaches.
They also kinda badly blocked things like command prompt. Was as simple as creating a batch style, sticking cmd in there, and running that.
Though maybe it was the best they could do at the time? It was NT 4, so honestly... not sure what capabilities it had.
me not being into tech very much at all till uni means I had no such experiences
I did once end up accessing some file drive where teachers seemed to put exam pdfs and I panicked and closed it and never told anyone
is this some kind of rite of passage
i did that too, but while fixing my professor's laptop at uni
you know thinking back it's wild it never crossed my mind till now that I could've cheated using that
good egg crumble
my thoughts were mostly occupied with "oh no what if they find out I found this place and I'll get in trouble"
i wouldn't have been able to do anything anyway, he was done teaching me by then and the papers were all courses I'd already completed
I frankly wasn't in any shape or form motivated to do well in school at the time
so it probably wasn't something I care much to even think about
as long as I passed I didn't care
and passing required little to no effort
cheating would've just introduced risk
and I've always despised risk
they say that teenagers haven't fully developed the part of the brain that does risk management but idk man that's been an innate part of me since I was tiny
cheating was definitely out of the question
failing is preferable to being caught cheating
I think being good by way of being anxious counts.
🙏
What about being productive out of self loathing?
well... it does make you productive
so I was watching a technology connections video about dvd closed captioning and at one point he mentioned there being bugs in VLC's implementation which got me curious
the type of person who'd contribute to VLC would definitely be the type to watch technology connections
and
sure enough
it's beautiful
commited after the video came out
Atra, was that you? /j

Saw this meme, perfectly encapsulates my feelings (beyond... not knowing there was a new sonic racing game until now)
The KAR evanglism will never stop /s
but only one of them has hatsune miku
...one of them has hatsune miku?
sonic racing crossworlds yes
Huh
I guess it shouldn't be too much of a surprise considering I'm also seeing it'll have Minecraft
It sounds like the sonic one is trying to be the Smash Ultimate of racing games 😛
Maybe when a new smash entry comes out (probably for switch 3 since I see it more likely that switch 2 gets a Smash Ultimate... ultimate edition? like mario kart 8 deluxe on the switch. Since then they might not have to renegotiate contracts and stuff for all the cross franchise stuff)
Nintendo I dare you to call it Super Smash Bros. Ultimate²
it's better than New Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
And also better than the Sm4sh name ("super smash bros for 3ds" and "super smash bros for wii u" are such lame names)
(What's even more lame is that they locked certain modes behind each platform)
New Super Smash Bros Ultimate U
(this is exactly what I did in my school using shortcuts
to the letter)
maybe that's just the standard

nothing like introducing someone to javascript-style short circuiting for the first time
aka one of the most cursed bits of syntax people seem to actually use
I don't use it out of principle
the last one is returned with the actual value it has
it's a bizarre thing that I hate
90% of the time when people use it they really just want ?? anyway which is not nearly as confusing
I guess that would return the first value that is falsy
It's great
wait no
ugh idk I hate it
it's abusing a compiler quirk for cursed behavior
shortcircuiting itself is great and I always keep it in mind when I order my expressions if there's several but the way javascript people use it is terrifying
Yeah, that is great, but this is making my face do emotions.
a5 = "Cat" && "Dog"; // t && t returns "Dog"
hate it
this should either just be a compilation error in a sane language or return true
it should not return dog
It's the same in python fyi
I had a feeling
I'm being amused at you two
when I dislike something in one it is often also in the other
playing runescape
Original or diet?
give pets
Thar one looks floof
that lego rocket is just waiting to be knocked over
All cat is baby regardless of age.

I still call my mom's 13 year old cats babies
That one looks exceptionally baby
rate level of baby
100% baby
100% baby too
It's settled then
calicos are actually 3 cats in one, making this 300% baby
that's a lot of baby
a == b && someMethod()
as a shorter way of writing
if (a == b) {
someMethod()
}
or
let c = (a == b && someMethod() || otherMethod())
instead of
let c = some default value
if (a == b) {
c = someMethod()
} else {
c = otherMethod()
}
though for that one you can just use javascript's tertiary operator
which is identical to the one in C#
I appreciate the lesson, but this is just inspiring me to make a bot to PR every public instance of this being used out of existence.
i feel like ive done a == b && someMethod() in C# at least once
Oh I do that one all the time but in python some method might not return bool
please do
it doesn't need to, that's the fun part! they can be whatever you want!
Morning, iro
evening, atra
damn it's already 8pm
This all makes much more sense when you consider that JavaScript was a tech demo that's basically scheme but with c-like syntax, and this is the way that scheme's and syntax works. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone complaining about scheme working that way... but maybe it's more natural in a language where you don't have to worry about operator precedence and "falsy" values.
I don't think that's the explanation (for starters, javascript's syntax is based on java haha) but also, short circuiting is a thing that exists in pretty much every programming language for efficiency reasons, and every language that uses types this loosely can use this pattern (atra already mentioned python), it just happens to be more common in javascript
my personal guess is that it's a result of the javascript type madness meaning you always have to verify everything haha
and Java's sytnax is based on c. The name "JavaScript" was 100% marketing; the language has nothing to do with Java.
I'm aware, it would be hard to know the relation and not know that part
I'm still mad that reg [5:0] test = 1; isn't always valid verilog
(Iro, please make a guess to why it is not valid.)
I have never touched verilog
(Isn't always valid. It is often valid.)
Register. Six bits wide. Assign initial value to 1
hmm
I have a few theories ig?
- not enough continuous space to make a register this wide, you have to check in advance?
uh
I'm guessing you don't mean simple stuff like test already being in use
word size above six?
idk if you can tell but this is very low level for me
You actually got it. Verilog defaults that 1 to a 32 bit number
I prefer to stay far, far away from the practical stuff
Then warns that the left and right sides are not the same width
oo, nice
32 bit seems a bit much for something this close to metal but then again, I know nothing about it haha
I guess it makes sense they don't automatically truncate
reg [5:0] test = '0 | 1'b1; is how I would write it
They could infer though
The 1 fits in that register. so just give me a six bit 1
so is 0 the only special "pure" (i.e., width-less) value, or is there some other way to write width-less values?
I'm not sure what you mean by width-less value tbh, just ones that conform to the available size if possible?
is the | a bit wise OR or something else? trying to understand the operator here
Yes
ah, makes sense then
(Up to 23 minecraft mod ideas, someone save me)
(+modpack that would be put otgether carefully enough to count as another idea on its own)
Do you really want to be saved
Really
Look me in the eye and tell me you want to be saved
Well you see, if I would actually work on any of these ideas the number would go down as I finished them, so I think that counts
I've been thinking about minecraft mods too
I kinda want to make a create addon that's themed as cassette futurism as a sort of higher tech tier
Like I was thinking a new power system that takes electricity and turns it into computing power using freeform computer multiblocks with magnetic tape reels
The main thing holding me back from making all these ideas is not having finished the C#-to-Java thing
And the thing holding me back from that is the non-deterministic launch bug I left it at
That does sound really neat though
is there no vs community for mac?
It was discontinued
MS just decided to focus on VSCode for mac support instead I think
you could always try rider
vscode is fiiiiiine
as long as u dont use anything besides the lang server and maybe debugger
I like it, personally
okey, ill check it out
Moving from making Minecraft mods to Stardew ones and forgot they were in two different languages
C# is a lot nicer to work with than Java though imo
If nothing else not having to deal with gradle is nice
Part of the thing I was gonna have to do with C#-to-Java was get MSBuild to interact with gradle (or maybe just maven?) 😔
probably a bad admission but i've only ever used maven
I use rider on Mac and I find it a very solid replacement for VS
I don’t use VSC on Mac at all
Speaking of create addons, apparently this really neat one was just released: https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/hypertubes
Also learning about old thermal expansion viaducts for the first time
How is that going btw
Haven't touched it since the first day I ever worked on it 😅
Oh fabric/quilt modding? (neo)forge are built on gradle so it's not optional there
I saw that! It's an interesting take on the idea
It looks fun, but:
- I'm a Create mod hater.
- Smooth curves in minecraft are evil (/s, mostly)
(Of course by "hater" I mean "I'm not a fan")
I'm still not sure why I have Create exhaustion when I've played it for like 15 minutes when it first came out and that's it
Why are you a create hater?
I think create does tend to get dragged into stuff that's not really related and it annoys me, but I do like the mod itseld
I'm curious because i also played it for like an hour and couldn't get into it and i still can't put my finger on why
Like I said, create exhaustion.
It's a very neat concept and I do like more in world stuff compared to single block machines that do a lot. Might just be create taking it too far though
Also this, but to be fair that's not a new phenomenon, like IC2/Buildcraft, then later Thermal Expansion, and now this
Mekanism and EnderIO probably get a stage in there too
I do think it's worse now, at least partly because of mcreator slop and datapacks-as-mods
I didn't think of this until just now but now that I think about it I think "taking in world stuff and multiblocks too far" might exactly be it
In theory create sounds great to me but when i actually tried it i just didn't enjoy it
That might be it, you're right
Ehhhhhhh I'm not gonna hate on something just because it's mcreator. The "slop" is just a consequence of making mods being more accessible.
Like, think about how many crop mods came out when JA was first getting popular
That's fair
I actually looked at the website recently and it is way more capable than I thought it was.
(I was mentioning it to my brother who can't program and has a hard time every time he's tried to learn)
It has gotten a lot better in recent years
I hear the generated code can still be kinda bad in some cases, but like, any tool that simplifies it for more accessibility is gonna have that problem
yup! I prefer fabric, it just runs better on my computer (potato moment)
Fabric is a lot lighter than forge, so that makes sense
I'm really interested to see how Spectrum works, been wanting to try it ever since I heard about it a few months ago. Haven't watched any playthroughs or anything, basically just seen the mod page and docs
I feel this, that and its just super laggy
I installed ATM9 and one of the additions I made was Sinytra Connector + Spectrum (and various other changes like replacing Curios with Accessories + the two bridge mods so the forge/fabric stuff works together properly)
I stick with forge for now just because there's better mod selection, but I also have a decent pc
And one of Spectrum's changelogs specifically mentioned changes to make it work with sinytra, so I'm confident it'll be fine. I got in game fine, just haven't played it yet
Yeah I have a monster PC so I dion't have to worry about it quite as much as most people
Yeah newer versions work great! Although depending on what else you install you may have to disable some integrations to prevent mixin crashes
I had to turn off create and traveler's backpack integration
what r Create mods
Create is an analog tech mod that uses rotational power
One thing I still need to decide when I make my mod ideas is whether to use neoforge or fabric.
Like, the main forge person is... pretty abrasive, just from what I saw back in 1.6.x/1.7.x days. But now we have neoforge.
And I recently heard the main fabric person is kinda bad in a more bigoted way, and not just from a single person saying that. There's quilt but I dunno if sinytra connector works well with quilt stuff
If you use architectury you can build both at once
And the main reason I'd use fabric over neoforge is because of sinytra connector - fabric users and forge users can both use it
True but you still need to write loader specific code for both 😭
Admittedly I don't know how much, but only a few of my ideas are on the "really small" side, so I assume not a trivial amount
Probably you'd need it for mixins
There's like 2 (and maybe +2 others depending on how vanilla game code is these days) of my ideas which I'd consider small enough to bother with that. (Also the only ideas that are small enough to bother doing in java, rather than figure out my C# nonsense)
Hmm, should today be the day I finally actually start playing my minecraft instance I've set up
Sounds like a great plan
This is the modpack+version and mod changes I made for if I get around to playing.
removed:
curios api (covered by an accessories bridge mod later)
added:
sinytra connector
forgified fabric api
connector extras
accessories
trinkets compat layer for accessories
grappling hook mod
hookshot
gliders
integrated scripting
more immersive wires
domestication innovation
enchanting infuser (which has apotheosis compat thankfully)
pretty rain
particular
completionist's index, just in case I do play this long term
added (fabric, you'll need to turn on "fabric" as being allowed in the filters section):
also, fabric mod dependencies don't seem to autodownload on a forge instance in prism launcher, so add those too
curios compat layer for accessories
revelationary
modonomicon (I installed the fabric version)
spectrum
spectrum jetpacks
cosmetica
dual wielder
terrastorage
Dual Wielder will be the weirdest one to get used to.
It lets you set up a separate button/key for your main hand right click and your off hand right click
(New button/key for both and unconfigured by default, so a pack with it doesn't force everyone to use this new way of doing this)
Another thing that's been holding me back from actually playing is there are several mod ideas of mine that I'd want for actually playing with more immediately 😅 But they aren't simple ones
How is Minecraft for adding mods after starting
like, loading at runtime or adding during a playthrough
I assume the latter
i dont assume anything with atra anymore
😂
Usually fine, though for anything that generates in the world (like ores or trees) you'll need to go to terrain that hasn't been generated yet.
Keep in mind i literally know more about sock construction than I know about Minecraft
I just remembered one of my ideas I mentioned to DH but didn't add to my ideas txt file. Guess that's 24 (+ modpack) now
....and just remembered another one I've mentioned here before but never wrote down separately.
This one: #programmers-off-topic message
(At the moment mainly just the last part about going straight from chest to terminal, a full blown tech progression would be easier as a modpack that heavily alters things from other mods)
But like something that doesn't magically connect all your storage but you sorta connect them yourself would be nice
Like , using integrated dynamics displays, but ones that displayed multiple things and you populated them yourself
Making a full on programming requirement might not be great user experience for most people, but there could be some in between abstractions, like a "job queue" system that you could display cleanly with hooking it up to a display yourself
You might could sorta do that with ID already actually from a functional perspective (like, even without Integrated Terminals), but the displays in ID are too barebones for complex things
...a big limitation of the way I'm thinking would be that only one person could use it at a time, which I don't think is the case for normal terminals
-# can't you use reg [5:0] test = 6'd1
(Just realized terrastorage does in fact have 1.20.1 versions, yoink )
-# or 6'b1 for that matter
Iro why aren't you sleeping
isn't it 5am for you
why aren't YOU sleeping
Stop being disrespectful to your elders!! (I have the day off tomorrow and i woke up late today lol)
...someone apparently made a working thing for steamvr that lets WMR headsets work without the native windows support which is going away???? (Meaning my hp reverb g2 is not in fact dead)
Not released yet, but would've been good to know this months ago before I got a replacement 😛
Oasis was the internal code name for Windows Mixed Reality at Microsoft - and also my favorite drink growing up in France!!
The Oasis driver is a native SteamVR driver (Direct Mode), it does not need the Mixed Reality Portal. It supports full 6DoF functionality, along with motion controllers. (Also, btw, it is NOT Monado and doesn't use any of ...
Well
The idea is to avoid putting the size on both sides
To make it faster to change the size (for whatever reason)
(Today was not that day. Still plenty of time but I kinda just want to go to bed already)
also this is a silly one but how comes doing
reg [5:0] test = 'd1
doesn't work in this case?
That one might be a "my tooling is old" tbh
this is why you can't trust americans
all the reasons before you and you picked that one?
yes
aha, so it IS a you problem! /j
I'll try it but for some reason I don't think it works
Also I would do 'b1 or 'h1
Get your base 10 out of my face
joke’s on you, the verilog docs said base10 is the default
btw I have never seen a website have as many ads as the one that popped up for the documentation, it was honestly impressive
in an annoying way
honestly no site is as lousy with ads as any goddamn recipe blog
"please can someone just tell me this extremely specific piece of information i need about this class of food"
no, you must wade through six hundred paragraphs of bullshit about my grandmother, and the spider web of ads has reduced the active part of the screen to one(1) postage stamp
especially on mobile
which so happens to be the thing most people use when they're looking at recipes
they have paragraphs about your grandmother?
that's a scary recipe site
Lol
Crumble y blazor bad pray tell
oh god
Front end scary
how do I say this without going on a 30 minute rant
Essentially it looked at the reactive frameworks that came out in JS land and wanted to mimic it. One thing they forgot to mimic however was any way to track state changes, a fundamental aspect of a reactive framework.
So instead what they do it just assume the dom has to be recalculated every time an event has occurred. Despite this it often won't work anyway so you have StateHasChanged() to manually tell them that "something somewhere in this component has changed so go recalculate it all"
I think that sets the tone of how (not) well thought out a lot of aspects of blazor are
this one put them to shame, I’m telling you
every blazor app I've worked on ends up running into a lot of footguns that make the application incredibly slow or clunky
I feel like wasm claim to fame is fast
yeah and they butchered any chance of showing that off
really though, wasm is only fast for algorithmic work. It doesn't have access to the DOM so it just still calls javascript for that
there's also the annoying part of blazor wasm where it needs to load and start up the .net runtime into the browser first before it can do anything
which makes page loads incredibly sluggish even when the actual data has already been cached
there's also blazor server which uses a websocket connection instead of wasm but I don't even want to talk about that one
the default is Auto which clunkily automatically tries to switch between blazor server and blazor wasm
I can't recommend anyone to ever under any scenario no matter how dire actually use Auto
best way to describe blazor...
Even out of the box as a user it feels like old slow internal tooling your company has been using for 20 years that you just kinda put up with and eventually stop noticing the sluggishness
even most blazor advocates admit that it's a terrible choice for any publicly facing website though
it exists for C# developers to be able to avoid needing to learn web technologies
damn
only a 15 minute rant
i know of one public-facing blazor website and i despise using it
what website is it
I was actually a blazor fan at one point when I was still naive and new to it
the amount of time it took to load the first time does fit
oh it's .net 6 as well
blazor wasm has gotten better since then though blazor itself has introduced several new footguns and a lot of complexity since then as well
the fact that blazor ships with bootstrap is funny to me
I do understand why it's being used here. This person actually just wanted to write a randomizer and writing that in JS would be painful so they went with C# instead
let's see what chromium Lighthouse thinks
hrm it's loading in a nearly 10 MB in size final fantasy dll
i fully understand writing the randomizer in C#. i just hate the web interface (and that it's the only interface i'm aware of for constructing the large and unwieldy flags strings, so if you wanted to use it offline you'd still need to run the dang app thing, just locally)
I'm honestly not entirely sure how to use this
doesn't help that it uses a final fantasy font which I understand for aesthetic reasons but it's not very easy to read
lmmao I don't think these slider controls are adhering to color contrast accessibility standards
I'd test it but it doesn't seem like the website stores what tab you're on in the URL so lighthouse can't load those tabs
though it's angry already anyway
it's a font from a different final fantasy, lmao
white on blue is definitely the OG FF colors though
I hate these, death to SPAs
(it's Chicago, which was an OG Macintosh font, but final fantasy 6 used it (in english) for its dialogue font)
SPAs and infinite scroll, the two greatest innovations for… not being able to actually properly navigate websites
it looks way better as pixels than it does in the horrible "modern" vectored version though
to be fair. SPAs can absolutely still store this in the url
and they should
though in my experience in blazor especially people tend to just ignore the URL as much as they can...
though in fairness that's cause my experience is mostly with people who aren't web devs
instead of the URL you slap in some state Singleton service
put your data in that singleton and it works perfectly and is much more convenient
...till you reload the page
TIL that the FF6 font was Chicago
i grew up with a macintosh classic as the family computer so i pegged that font immediately the first time i played ff6
that's not entirely true. Most of this website is using a font called Liberation. The headers are using Chicago though
with a fallback to Arial
which i find amusing
liberation is just a boring free-software font. when you said "a final fantasy font" i assumed you were talking about the chicago parts
yeah but I was also being blind and thought then entire page was using it
ah, ok
It's just dawned on me that my computer hasn't had any system boop sounds in a while...
and if I try to preview them nothing plays...
because 100% is too big
Because of the golden ratio /s
of course
The next iPadOS update once again creeps ever so slightly closer to MacOS
yeah but what if instead of reverse engineering it, we could use regular multi page websites...
to be fair. For tabs like this people have been using funky javascript for a long time
since it's a multi-tab form essentially
that sounds like good news to me
I should look up what they're doing
considering my ipad already didn't get stage manager I won't be getting this either
A MacOS-like window manager, and they're adding the menu bar
the windowing system wasn't my problem with the ipad though so rip
But still not able to run full-fledged MacOS applications
Oh and the Files app is basically Finder now
I only care if they did the one sensible thing and that's stop pretending that Photos aren't files
make photos accessible from the files app and like 80% of me fighting with that fuckin ipad would be gone
Also all of Apple's products are using a new "Glass" design. Not to be confused with Aero Glass, but it's kind of Aero Glass.
Most of the thing they spent talking about AI features
last time they did that too and then launched without them
But for real this time
but my question is who is doing ai on an ipad
unless it's for end users, but then they usually use stuff that doesn't require a lot of special stuff anyway
ChatGPT image generation is built into Image Playground
why
Because what if you want to make that photo look like an oil painting
alright please tell me I'm not stupid and this dude is just completely sarcastic while saying this. He doesn't sound even remotely like he believes any of it https://www.youtube.com/live/0_DjDdfqtUE?si=dCOs80G9GU2QhwPI&t=4889
Get a sleek peek at what’s to come this WWDC. This year’s week of technology, community, and creativity with developers across the world kicks off on June 9 ...
is he just making fun of their own products
I'm sure he's dead serious
I couldn't sound more sarcastic if I tried
He's like the head of product development
Everything they do is always the best thing ever
was this really the best take they could get
he doesn't sound remotely serious
more like he's making fun of them
It sounds ridiculously sarcastic to me, yeah.
I'm pretty sure he was equally as enthused last year about the iPad having a calculator app
wtf there's more of these weird ways of saying it like they're almost mocking themselves
Watch the WWDC25 keynote introducing our broadest design update ever and a more helpful Apple Intelligence. You’ll also learn about exciting features coming ...
why is there such a pause after "it now includes features"
to me the way they're saying it makes it sound like the files app did not have features before this
"before this update, the files app could not in fact do anything"
The files app did have features!
It builds anticipation, keeps the viewer wanting more
it is incredible though that it took them this long to add an "open with" option to the context menu
people have been abusing the share menu for so long to do this
ok so they didn't actually fix anything to do with files
they just added a few conveniences

being able to give icons to folders or putting them in your application panel was truly what was holding files back
not the fact that you refuse to give us an actual fuckin file system

I've heard people ranging from tech people to grandmas struggle with the fact that they can't seem to be able to
either
- Not see their photos in their files
or - Not see the photos they just downloaded from the web in their photos app
both for the same reason of their insane choice to pretend those are separate concepts when they simply aren't
soz ok that was my vent
I did photo editing on an ipad for several years
android has never had this problem it's not hard to fix
I don't understand what they're to protect here by pulling this nonsense
ok my rant wasn't quite over
I mean, the iPad is still being marketed as a "post-PC" device, but it kind of defeats their whole premise the more and more the iPad becomes PC-like.
It's turns out post-PC is just PC all along
I think the final few hangups is just them still stuck in their marketing of the device
With ipad pro + ios 11, a post–PC world may be closer than you think.
Are there hangups? It's not like it's a struggling product
I don't think it's gaining the type of adoption from professionals that they have been trying to push for years now
In Apple's mind every professional from every industry should drop their "computers" and pick up iPads. Or maybe now Vision Pros.
Even in today's WWDC, there was a pretty big segment about content creators being able to use iPads as their one and only device
the only group of creative people I've met where this seems to mostly be possible is artists
primarily because of procreate and the apple pencil
for video editing they'd need to give those things a lot more storage to be viable
actually it seems the more recent ipad pros do go up to 2 TB
2TB is still hardly anything for modern creative work, though
mine is 256 GB which sometimes meant I had to take my photos of the camera in batches, process those and then get the next batch
oh definitely
Well, I shouldn't say "hardly anything" but it's rapidly becoming less and less acceptable
and with the ipad file app's seemingly breaking constantly when trying to use SMB network storage I couldn't get that workflow to work very nicely either
They're lucky 8K video continues to not be relevant because no one has 8K display devices and most people don't have good internet.
you can barely even buy 8K displays
I'm convinced that for anything smaller than a TV it doesn't make sense to begin with
though I guess films are often watched on tv
but good luck convincing film studios to use an ipad
I am much less concerned about resolution than I am color accuracy at this point
4K is good enough. Even at TV size, it's good enough.
Give me colors that don't suck
Give me acceptable black levels and contrast
Regular procreate user here. i love using both i love sticking my tongue out at Apple as I upload my little artworks through discord and edit them in gimp
i will now leave the conversation
I should probably try modern gimp to make sure my impression of it isn't out of date, but oooh boy was it something the last time I used it
Smh
well they did finally release the GTK 3 version
I'm in team HD is good enough
like, 720p?
I don't need 4k
I'm afraid I do need more than 720p
I mean I watched anime at 144p as a teenager and still managed to enjoy it but
What about brightness? How many knits do you prefer
-# Yes I in fact did only say this because I wanted to say my dumb "knits" line
I might have egg on my face because my preferred work monitor is 3440x1440
yeah you can't say 720p is good enough then...
I'm very surprised your office has ultrawides
fucked up that they call it 4k when its only 2 thousand pixels tall
noone calls 1440p 2k
incorrect actually
also why the k
idk sounded catchy
bigger numbers = better
1080p is 1 million pixels not 1 thousand pixels
but numbers that are too big confuses customers
can't blame apple this time cause they prefer to just use vague terms like "retina display" instead
i may be stupid
Every description of resolution that isn't the vertical line count at a minimum is very stupid
1080p is 2 million pixels
yea but its not 1k its 2M
I do something similar, but I use Affinity
I mean 1k is just an approximation of 1080
they should call 4k 8M
so like, the camera route
yea
describe monitors in megapixels
1 is just an approximation of 1080 if you approximate hard enough
4k is an approximation of 2160, its okay
if theyre already gonna go "ummmmmm well its 4 times as many pixels" then the base units should be pixels not rows
You know what I hate more than "2k", "4k", etc?
HD and Full HD

Does that mean I'm currently living in what is canonically part of final fantasy? Where's all the magic???
(i do not like full hd and hd as distinctions either)
Is it hiding from the deep dish "pizza"? Because that's fair
This isn't 2001 anymore you can't get away with calling 720p "high definition", darn it
calling 1080p Full HD has the same energy as calling USB3.0 "SuperSpeed USB"
k doesnt have to mean 1,000, maybe its an algebraic variable
3840x2160 = 4k where k = 1080p
Alright fine, we'll go back to WQUXGA
and where p = 2i
see, things make perfect sense
Reminded me of this old thing. Never obsolete!
1080 rows (× 1920 columns) ≈ 1k rows
1k rows × 4 = 4k rows
4k rows ≈ 4320 rows (× 7680 columns)
but nooooo 4k actually means way smaller than that because stupid reasons
you say that but just try to remove support for this from the linux kernel and you'll find the people who use and rely on this thing to this day
What makes it never obsolete
its higher definition than it could be. high enough definition, to be able to tell what's happening in a show, perhaps?
long time user 4 can maintain a fork if cpu overheating is so important to her
Speaking of video resolution, I recently watched an old minecraft video (over a decade old) and oh boy, I forgot how hard it was to see minecraft unlit caves in youtube 440p
720p may not be crisp and shiny but it is still a comfortable resolution for most kinds of video media
funny enough the most common examples of situations where you really need more than 720p are also the situations where higher resolutions can be more difficult to provide (e.g. screen sharing/live streaming)
720p is the lowest resolution I will watch without being too annoyed about it yeah
DVD is the only optical format you need for anything ever
how about qr codes
Kids these days with their fancy codes. Back in my days we had barcodes, and they were perfect.
as someone who has developed retail software... fuckin wish they were perfect
this is crazy talk
UMD is the only optical format you need
True Story - I remember buying a barcode scanner and making a small app to encode some simple texts. It was my early days of automation.
I think this was late enough that the scanner was usb as opposed to serial port
futuristic
Very cutting edge tech
god i forgot how many movies they put out on UMD
That's what it is, they put out a fuckton of movies on UMD for PSP owners
I'm pretty sure anime is still produced in 720p or near that
wtf
No shiny 4k until the BD
720p is the only format you need because AI can just magically make it 4k nowadays
for anime even the Blu-ray is often 1080p
I mean, I would hope so
you don't want 4k?
standard blu-ray only goes up to 1080p
damn
I don't think I own a single Blu-ray
I certainly don't own anything that can play them
don't you worry, my PC has got a 4k blu-ray drive baby
incredible
it can
I can do that too at the stovetop
I burn CDs and DVDs fairly often tbh
It's not uncommon tbh
an archivist
Like I look at waveforms and circuit diagrams
I knew I liked this monitor
I didn't know it was 4k
it's 1440p ultrawide not 4k ur safe
as a child I fantasized about burning my own CDs
funny, I can do that now but I now have no need
I do it mainly to burn PS2 and dreamcast games teehee
What did you want to put on the cds selph
and rip 4k blu-rays
pirated ps2 games
wtf
welcome to the future
my ps2 stopped working years ago
smh
As a child i kept my backups on CD
Current atra doesn't want to look at those CDs
I might just destroy them
They are almost all my shitty fanfiction
mail me them
People can technically see my teenage fanfiction but they can't associate it with me because I abandoned the username it was uploaded with
Anyways
Modern atra just has a back hdd like a sane person
God I feel like shit. Somehow I picked up food poisoning
Luckily it was fast, if an unpleasant half hour
Are those the same ones the gamecube used, or just similar?
That's what the PSP used, the Gamecube used mini-DVD iirc
i still use the same username but it remains completely unassociated with my irl & online identity (i was smart when i made it ig)
this is probably overkill but ive got a ublock origin filter to hide my username from ao3 pages in case im sharing my screen 😂
Sounds like a plan

A babyyyyyyy
