Fair. I want to get into tumblr but the times I've tried it's just hard to really get into it? I guess because of how decentralized things are
Just leechblock reddit so you have to check it on your phone
Depends on if you use it for chatting with friends or for parasocial relationships with your favorite influencers and their discord servers (/s, mostly)
I did. The override for X amount of time button I mentioned earlier... (though to be fair I only seriously started using that when my free time expanded a bunch several months ago)
yeah it's really hard to start with because the main way of using it is just... having friends and finding new stuff through them. so if you don't know anyone already on tumblr, there's this big awkward period where you're just following random people and going through tags for stuff
tumblr is nice if you been there since 2014
Reddit isn't terrible if you avoid r/all nad basically only have not-large subreddits you are subscribed
That being said, this is with old reddit
Once old reddit dies I'll likely stop using it
Also, re:tumblr, I do enjoy the stuff I see from there, so I do check r/curatedtumblr sometimes 😛
But actually getting a feed built up there would be hard. Probably the same if I started a reddit from scratch these days to be fair
discord is enough social media for me
discord occupies this weird space between forums and chatrooms. the public servers are kind of social media, but a lot of what I use it for is just chatting with friends
I am on reddit but I don't think r/knitting and r/fpga counts
Warm, fuzzy, sometimes tangled. Please read our sub rules. Rule-breaking may result in a ban without notice. It may take up to 48 hours for (1) a post to be approved/ reviewed (2) response to modmail/from a moderator. Whatever happens needs to happen thoughtfully. Please keep being excellent to each other.
which is closer to like, texting or email, which isn't really social media per se
(And I'm literally only on r/fpga for work)
At least until discord keeps adding more social media type features.
ugh yeah
Also, don't you love being discord being used for forums these days but needing to find stuff on google?
Short form video when
This is the major reason why I visit reddit. R/fpga is so good
yeah the death of forums is deeply tragic and I'm praying the ones that have survived this long continue well into the future
I also go to r/bogleheads
Bogleheads are passive investors who follow Jack Bogle's simple but powerful message to diversify with low-cost index funds and let compounding grow wealth. Jack founded Vanguard and pioneered indexed mutual funds. His work has since inspired others to get the most out of their long-term investments. Active managers want your money - our advice:...
That looks like a fun subreddit
save me public linux mailing lists
one of these days I'll start actually spending time on spacebattles
Anyways, casey
Somehow the SFML forums are still going. Tragically, because you can find my old post where I didn't understand what a C++ reference was
How goes the anime
(The post I'm thinking of was 2010. Before that there was also "Is there anything wrong with a WHILE statement in a thread?" )
Also when I did my "spacechase0 site:en.sfml-dev.org/forums" google search, the AI overview which I still need to disable mentions " spacechase0 is also known for creating Stardew Valley mods".
It's also hallucinating my last forum post as being from 2020 when it's really 2017, but the stardew connection was surprising
Since when can AI pick words from usernames (outside of like unscramblers)
There's not much as far as anime I'm really enjoying this season. There's some I'm watching and enjoying, but nothing that stands out a lot.
I think summer is gonna have a bunch though
It's not already summer?
Not as far as anime seasons go
The summer season is considered July-September in that context
I've noticed google does OCR for images because the last time I searched my username, one of the results was a screenshot of a smapi console error that had my mod id (and thus username) in it
Waiting patiently for kaoruhana this summer
As silly as it sounds I'm looking forward to season 2 of the vending machine isekai
I didnt know it had an anime
It's unreasonable how enjoyable it is
I want to call that silly, but I did encounter that series as a light novel so this is quite a glass house from which to cast my stones
In other news, it is now my birthday. I look forward to not giving a single care about work today. Yeah, those are some nice tickets. Too bad I don't care. 😄
It's also somehow even sillier than the reincarnated as a sword anime (which is also better than it has any right to be)
makes a game to be distracted by
At that point you've earned it.
Especially if it's a game with enough content to keep you distracted long enough to not do productive things
makes balatro
And no, you can't bring it in via external storage
You have to manually type out external code yourself, like old PC magazines intended
Supposedly balatro took two and a half years to make. Again, at that point you've earned it
Is there another way to do it?
To import external code?
No, there's not even a camera on the PC for you to code OCR for
And all the hardware is a closed system, so no hooking up a fake keyboard that will simulate all the keystrokes of a specified document for you
Well, my guess is that it'll be much faster to do now that the game exists and I know what's in it, I can skip the whole design step
Hope you have the game memorized, because internet access was previously disallowed too
No, I meant, is there another way to code than typing all the code yourself in general? /j
(Yes, at this point you're stuck in a cleanroom forced to be productive with no way of interacting with the outside world)
(Food and water will be provided via star trek replicator+Transporter)
Yeah, I would 100% code a distraction for myself in this situation
Hmm... create a LLM from scratch and ask it to do it for you?
You would need to generate all the data to train it, there's no point
But at that point you're being productive!
If you start using your distraction too much (ie. playing all the time instead of playing some getting a new idea and making changes), it'll be confiscated and you have to start from scratch
That, or you're free from the distraction-free-scape since clearly youv'e transcended it
I mean, how dedicated are you to not coding the stuff yourself....
Damn, ok, I lose then, I'll be productive...
If we add immortality to the mix... well...
Hell yeah, time for all the ideas
disappears into the depths of the blankets on my bed
(However, the depths have WiFi)
nice
lead coated blankets to block out all the wifi
faraday cage blanket plus a tin foil hat
So my Framework 13 made it from Taiwan to me in the eastern US in less than 48 hours. Impressive speed FedEx, but maybe at least knock if you've left a laptop on my porch.
Kind of Framework's fault for not requiring signature for the laptop, honestly. I don't understand why they forbid weekend delivery but don't require signature
Yeah I'd expect it to require signature, but I can also see how that would complicate international deliveries. Also half the deliveries that I get that require signature just get left without one anyways, so it's not exactly foolproof
shoutout to fedex delivering mine to a neighbor without telling me which
My batch wasn't even for May, it was "Q2" (AKA June), so Framework appears to be on - if not ahead - of schedule
TIL vscode added the inline git blame feature themselves, so I no longer need a plugin for it
the future is here
I haven't updated vscode in... a while. I do not want the AI nonsense. Really I should just install a fork, but ms started blocking forks from using their plugins repo too. It's annoying
They do let you hide the Copilot crap at least. Though being Microsoft, would I be shocked if it magically came back every nth update? Nope!
They might be trying to get a bunch of stuff out before more tariffs tho if Taiwan then idk if that’s it
VSCode has AI stuff? I hadn't noticed anything
Vscode has so much ai stuff
(I know, a plugin is different, but I couldn't resist.
)
Work might be getting vscode next month
I might be sticking with vim
I'm such a broken person
I use the VSCode Neovim extension, and it works quite well
I rolled back to older version for a different reason though (the image preview in new vscode is slow af for some reason)
Yeah I got my order in initially because of the "tariffs in 90 days" thing, and my pricing didn't change from them since I bought all my expansion cards (which are made in China) from the US online store instead of getting them with my laptop order.
I heard some tariffs got struck down
They're all over the place. I wasn't really trying to keep up, but now I'm definitely not since it changes hourly
I do think this new "TACO" thing is amusing, but I'll leave it at that so as to not get political in here
do you think neovim is safe from the curse? I haven't even started getting into it proper yet
it 100% is
I use neovim actually, and I have no reason they will be bought out by a for-profit
phew
Ai is just pure vc bait rn
Can i invest in crumble agentic empire
barely readable programming 🙂
You might think it's barely readable because of the font. It's actually barely readable because it's Lua.

This font is cute
The font is doin its best for a tiny screen size and no subpixels.
It's cute but I could never program like that
This is fake, no one programs Pico-8 in an external editor
Most people who use this console unironically do
Lua is finnnneee
I prefer c++ but lua works
everyone starts, then makes a quick change in the internal editor, then forgets the external editor is an old version
as is tradition
4*6 font
Please don't ping reply to me
Mb og
I only do that when editing sprites, painful
I blame zep for only giving us 16 tabs
That's not nearly enough for a bigger game
zep knows what we want...
scoresub tomorrow I promise
I just like joking about Lua because it has some stuff I really don't like in a programming language. I admit it is actually fine though. ... though I do prefer Luau, since a language without types is a bad language.
I say this despite my day job being JavaScript. JavaScript is also a bad language.
I'll never get over 1-based indexing though
Weaklings can't handle dynamic languages
1 based indexing doesn't bother me
Acknowledge the table as your one true God
Doesn't matlab use 1-based?
Right now my hatred is towards verilog assuming 1 is 32 bit
Metatables
I tried to use lua outside the pico8
Never again
Not worth the pain
I'm free of Matlab these days
Traded it for systemverilog and verilogams

Hello, everybody. I'm Nick, and in this video, I will talk about the new JetBrains ReSharper extension that was launched for Visual Studio code and compare it to the C# Dev Kit to...
does community edition also have it?
-# pssst is that the Gabi Belle video open in chromium
They're doing what!?
the Gabi belle video
Yes it is
it's just a weird coincidence, I watched it yesterday
You can already install it. It replaces Microsoft's C# and C# Dev Kit extensions for VSCode.
I installed and meant to check it out this weekend, but haven't played around with it at all yet.
But it is BAD according to this yt thumbnail
You can tell he's so upset because he hand is on his forehead
I have never seen this person other than the occasional clickbait title you guys send and my impression of him so far is that he can make a new code comment sound like the end of the world
I actually have learned a lot from his content
As he became more content creator focused, his stuff has been more clickbaity, but he is knowledgable and sometimes shares useful information
I refuse to use c# these days
Too locked in with msft
I switched to lua and C++
Worse in a lot of ways but they do the job
how about rus-
kills you
I had a small adventure earlier this year trying to get C++
unrelated but this is the first time I'm hearing about the p8
is it similar to older things like the zx spectrum?
8bit fantasy console
You have 16 colours, 52kb max sized games
But i gave up and so we r roll our own rbtree now
I moved to writing almost everything in c++
what is?
My discord bot is written in c++ 😭
Some "console" thing from the 1980s
It's like the easiest thing to emulate
same, and I'm currently writing C++ for work
why are there references and pointers
why does the iterator syntax look like that
etc etc
I'm confused, as far as I can tell the chip8 is software?
I would love to have c++ iterators tbh
Oh shit you're right
ah, it's software that used to run on old consoles
But no the shenanigans is nothing to do with C/C++ and everything to do with weird inhouse package management systems
It's essentially a virtual machine spec for games designed back in the 1970s. So you could program your game just for the Chip-8 "platform" and it would run anywhere the Chip-8 emulator was made
ah, well I'm sure there IS chip8 emulation for the zx spectrum at least
There probably is
I hear that Chip-8 is a great platform to learn emulation and that there's a great tutorial series in how to write a Chip-8 emulator in Rust for desktop and web
(it's a hand-me-down from my dad along with his old TI)
Chip8 is the easiest thing to emulate
It has 32 opcodes in totla
And they're super simple
Wow, I don't suppose there's a well written reference guide on how to make such an emulator, made by someone very cool and handsome?
I was wondering why your first message sounded like ad copy
I don't know what you're referring to
well, give the link, aquo
Nor would I have any problems completing that guide and then beginning the follow-up tutorial on emulating a Game Boy
Did you every write stuff for the chip8 or just the enulator
; Clear screen
00E0
; Set I to sprite location
A210
; Initialize position
600A ; V0 = 0x0A (X)
6100 ; V1 = 0 (Y)
; --- Main Loop ---
LabelMain:
00E0 ; Clear screen
D015 ; Draw 1x5 square
; Delay loop (simple timer)
6200 ; V2 = 0
LabelDelay:
7201 ; V2 += 1
3228 ; Skip next if V2 == 40
120A ; Jump to LabelDelay
; Move square down
7101 ; V1 += 1
; Loop forever
1206 ; Jump to LabelMain
I was reading this and I can't understand shit 😦
What are all those numbers
if chip8 is a virtual machine like aquo said, it would be the same writing for the original chip8-based consoles and the emulators
those are instructions
An excellent question
Perhaps this will help https://github.com/aquova/chip8-book
They're so random
It seems like it currently doesn't support the highly advanced features of running and/or debugging.
dxyn is any instruction from 0xD000-0xDFFF
I still need to actually do the rust book
so, aquo... chip8 implemented inside stardew somehow when?
Can you implement logic inside of stardew
I'm sure we can figure out a way
Ohhh
Man I'm obsessed with these old things
I wish there was a pico8 but for c++
Speaking of Pico-8
I like being limited
You can't import files in pico8
But I made a brain fuck editor in pico8 before
Was fun
we make a giant farm and add a modded machine transistor and build a CPU out of it with automate the way people do in minecraft
hmm, I wonder if you could use automate and one of the chest mods to turn a regular machine into a transistor or logic gate...
I should make one for Playdate come to think of it
When are you porting Ecco to the Pico-8?
when are you porting doom
You're right, we need a game gear emulator too
Me when no file imports
now every time you say something like this I half expect you to immediately link the finished project
didn't you guys say there was an external editor? how could there be an external editor without the ability to import things? I am confused
As in
You can't upload a PNG to the console inside a game
You can develop using an external editor
You can just open the source files in whatever editor, then the Pico-8 program allows you to hot reload files
Then you change a sprite before forgetting to save in external editor 😦
surely this means you can copy paste into an empty source file, though?
meaning what
That's not uploading a file, that's hard coding some data into a string
it sounded like the issue was the inability to import code, at least to me?
although Pico-8 does allow you to include other files now
0xD0FC
this seems like a viable way to do that, at the very least
That's why the version I linked only can play the games from the list, they're the only ones I included (and the only ones playable with a Pico-8's button availability)
You can "program" stuff in mail syntax
P8 is so close to being exactly what I want, it just lacks some buttons
I wish we had modern gba
Also event script become turning complete in 1.6.16 i think
I should write the pico8
Equivalent of a gba
that's our theory
help me make a universal Turing machine as proof
Isn't a Turing complete machine just a thing that can output 1 and 0
...no?
finally, I can ask Elliott to list every number that's divisible by 3 and 5 up to 1000
fizz. buzz. fizz. fizzbuzz
Turing complete is any machine that can simulate a Turing machine, which is just putting numbers into an infinite row of boxes
a Turing machine is a machine described by Alan Turing that takes in an infinite tape of characters and changes then and/or advances the tape based on internal state and the current character
Aq, rewrite the chip8 programming language in rust
Make it safe
And blazingly fast
Oh
a universal Turing machine is one that takes in two tapes, one for the input data and one for the instructions, and evaluates them in this way
Yea idk the maff part but the non maff part is that finally the content modders can have for loops
That's not quite how it works
CSS is turning complete
(I was joking)
a Turing complete language is something that can emulate a Turing machine, like aquo said
(if you include CSS animations)
and being Turing complete is proven to mean you can use said language to run all algorithms (in the mathematical sense)
Okay we can
PROBABLY import games from chip8 in p8
Calling stat(4) shows the system clipboard content
Could you technically copy the entirety of a chip8bgame to clipboard then paste it in p8
Til - editorconfig isn't a VS thing
This is amusing to me because you put "trying to get C++" rather than "trying to get used to C++", like obtaining a C++ compiler is a quest of its own
It is
Also re: C++ iterators, just be glad auto exists now. I always hated having to do std::dictionary<std::string, std::vector<SomeObject>>::iterator pre-C++11 (decltype didn't exist back then either)
Specifically it was
to get libstdc++ to work on clang
But again it's entirely due to funny package management system
That sucks, I was thinking about trying it out for nefarious purposes earlier today.
However my nefarious purposes would involve not using the C# running/debugging....
(I'm talking about to my C# to Java stuff again - I realized that I can probably just hijack a JVM debugger for debugging, somehow)
Given that last time I tried to make a vs extension I couldn't get any code to actually run, I'd probably do it in vscode
the gba is actually really fun to write for, because it's a surprisingly modern CPU (arm7tdmi) with super/famicom level tile graphics and OAM. it's very much my sort of thing
I still think the gba (especially the sp flavor) is one of the best handhelds ever made
I'm sure some of that is nostalgia but damn, it does still hold up after all these years
I'm more partial to the DS
And the 3ds I guess to some extent (only ever played on the "new 3ds" though)
Put so many hours into Rune Factory 4 (though that's 3ds)
But even normal ds games there was fun stuff like phantom hourglass
The puzzle where you needed to press something on the top and bottom screen together by closing the DS was such a neat concept.
I feel like the 3ds was kind of a waste, honestly. at least the original flavor.
the 3d gimmick was kind of cool but that was pretty much the only advantage it had over the ds, and they got rid of a number of ds features that I actually did miss
I always played with the 3d off
What did the 3ds get rid of? Besides GBA game support
I played with 3d on for like the first couple months and then turned it off basically forever
pictochat and the download play thing as well
Ah, pictochat
Fond memories of chatting with my brother past bedtime on it
But hey, at least pictochat lives on in... smash brothers? Technically?
The download play thing was super neat as well
Think we used it for mario kart a bunch
they had a replacement for pictochat on the 3ds but it was not as cool. it allowed you to do "3d" drawings, but it wasn't a real-time chat, it just let you send mail over wifi. it was limited to ten panels and there was no reply/conversation feature or ability to send to people nearby, so it was basically useless. Also it could only send to other 3dses
I mean to be fair the ds could only send to other DSes
I guess, but like... most consoles didn't care about backwards compat much back then, right? (But especially nintendo, of course)
I mean the wii could do gamecube games and the original ds could do gba
though those are something of outliers in the console space, even now
Yeah but that's game compat
Not multiplayer compat
Also I didn't think of that to be fair 😛
nintendo's handhelds famously did backcompat for a long run (gbc->dmg, gba->gbc/dmg, ds->gba)
(famously to me, anyway)
(though tbf the link cable kinda sucked ass anyways)
For some reason I'm remembering the lite being able to do it but I'm probably misremembering
you might be right, I never owned a lite
I had two busted secondhand original flavor dses and a 3ds
i miss my lite. i loved it
mine was stolen!
Saw it the other while going through apartment stuff
Tragic 😔
I still have my og 3ds
Oh, I must be thinking of the gameboy SP working with the link cable
I jailbroke it to run homebrew but I still don't use it much
the sp did have a link cable jack on it yes
I remember using the gamecube link one for final fantasy crystal chronicles with my brothers, as well as for the SA2 chao garden
And wind waker tingle tuner
My 3ds is jailbroken too. Wonder if it would break if I updated the OS since I heard they patched the exploit recently-ish? Or if I had done it in one of the permanent ways
the only multiplayer gba games I had were super mario 3 (I think?) and four swords (on the same cartridge as link to the past)
Jailbroken wii was a lot of fun as well. We kinda lucked out on the smash bros brawl exploit, considering we played that game religiously (and of course used mods extensively once they started existing)
And then there was the browser exploit for the wii u
wii was an amazing console, I slightly regret never owning one
I always wanted to play four swords but you needed four people 😔
Oh that reminds me, also used the GC link for the GC four swords with my brothers
There's a reason wii sports is the third top selling game of all time (though it's a sorta cheaty case since it came with the console)
my friend still uses his wii for playing a ton of emulated old console games on his tv
depending on how old your custom firmware is you can jsut update it as normal. dont do it without checking whether you can though obv
I wonder how many grandparents still use it for wii sports / wii fit
Why did i think a sock knitting competition was a good idea
It is the middle of the night
I have stayed up late to knit sock
I still have ~50 rows left 😦
speed of one pair I believe
Hoy, I saw people talking about jailbroken 3DS here, and I'm looking into buying one to tinker with it. But the used 3DS I found are kind of expensive, the one model I found that is in my budget is a DSlite, and I'm waiting to see if I can find a cheap-ish DSi, what do y'all recommend?
I'm also thinking about buying a Super-Famicom but I already now it'll be a pain to play it once back in Europe
Oh, well, I didn't actually understood that
I don't think I really care for any 3ds games, the only ds games I wanna play I can think of are quite old I think
a DS and an r4 card would probably do the trick
iirc a dsi is the same as a ds with one extra feature but the 3ds is a completely different console
so when in doubt, go for dsi ig?
(dsi = ds with camera if I’m not mistaken)
yeah ds lite is literally just a DS but built to be a little less bulky. The DSi does have its own firmware but it's also well understood
I have a ds and all I know is that one of my games is the same cartridge for both ds and dsi, the ds version just disables camera
yeah
I recently got a 3DS, I'm delighted with it
I got given my ds for free by a rich classmate with no appreciation for the value of money when I was 11
the literally only problems it has are that the touchscreen has some natural wear and the stylus doesn’t stay in the holder
I have an original DS and a DS lite
also a 2DS which I bought with my own money only to then basically never use
I didn’t come from a gamer family so we really didn’t have consoles growing up, and the consoles we eventually had (the ds and when I was 16, a wii) each had like three games because my parents saw the price and noped the hell out
I had a really bad track record when it came to using the consoles I bought myself
I bought myself an xbox 360 and a 2ds and I never really used either of them
I now also have a ps4 and a switch and I can relate to that problem because I barely play them
oh I also bought myself a switch which I did at least use for a few games but also not much
but also, games are so expensive??? nobody talks about how expensive gaming is as a hobby, even without considering hardware. and here I thought crafty hobbies were bad
is it really an expensive hobby though?
I spend maybe like 10 bucks a month on games
would you call yourself a gamer though
ye
I play a lot of runescape to be fair
steam has a lot of sales and my mom, sister and I are a steam family so we can play each other's games
I adhded to close to the sun for like a year and whaled on a gacha game which I very much regret but other than that I’m mostly a minimal spend kinda person
lmao
there's certainly ways to game that get very expensive
gacha is an obvious one since that's what it's designed for
yeah, I wasn’t including that dw
I was more talking about the people who have every AAA game
yeah if you do that things get very expensive
or the people who own every sims dlc without it being their job
my backlog is big enough that I almost never really have any reason to buy a game at launch
I can just wait for at least a 50% sale
I just don’t hear about them until they’re like a year old anyway
my mom and sister yeah
well if you watch summer game fest next week you can know about games before they even launch!
every sims dlc??? that’s over $1.5k
awesome! I will not /lh
well they stopped playing the sims with sims 4 so it's more so all dlc for sims 1 through 3
not counting the content packs
only the actual dlcs
ah, that’s a different beast. I also own all sims 2 dlc from back when ea were giving it away for free
(I actually bought it back when the sale was only meant to last a week. It ended up lasting like three years)
my sister and mom have been buying the dlcs full price as they've been coming out since the magic dlc for sims 1
my sister yeah
she did anyway
back when she played

sims 4 killed her interest and my mom kinda stopped gaming entirely till I convinced her to get a steam deck
I was gonna say, I assume they both loved 4
especially bust the dust and everything after it
when sims 4 launched without even having pools my sister got disillusioned
I know very little about early sims 4 but I hear it was dire
pets are dlc-only, right?
think so
which is why there was that whole controversy about dlc for a dlc
loads fine for me
so bad 🥲
i am quite liking postres, although I should probably install an extension for prisma
I generally refuse to spend 50 euros on a single game
However, during the sales or just due to indie games being cheaper in general, you'll occasionally see me splash 50 euros on like, 7 games at once
I admittedly tend to only spend more than 20 at once when I'm stressed, though
Didn’t the dsi have an internet browser “game” cartridge
The Nintendo DS Browser is a port of the Opera 8.5 web browser for use on the Nintendo DS, developed by Opera Software and Nintendo, and sold as a standalone game cartridge. Two versions were sold, one for the original Nintendo DS and one for the Nintendo DS Lite, each with a different Slot-2 memory expansion pack to fit the respective system.
T...
oh that's the normal ds
Oh it worked for the normal DS too? Huh
oh the dsi had an a built in one https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3825/~/nintendo-dsi-browser-overview
Also re consoles and few games, literally the only reason I want a switch 2 is KAR 2 (though regulars here are probably aware of that)
My family had tons of games growing up (except the Wii U era, at least comparatively - still several, but not “buy the children a game on a whim” level thanks to job situations)
These days I really get the impression we fit the typical decently well off middle class family stereotype pretty well
iirc the DS one had to come on a custom cart, with extra RAM on it, or something, rofl
oh wait no, it came with a separate cartridge for the GBA slot that had the RAM?
it's so funky
that's 16 MB of RAM right there
yeah, I just bought 9 games for 80€
Blue Prince is a banger, finally a puzzle game that will take me more than 10 hours to beat
this? https://dancekar.com/
It was the first result
Kirby air ride
Hell yeah, I just downloaded it last week to play on Dolphin, I'm expecting it to be a blast when I see my friends this summer
such a shame that KAR2 will probably be Switch 2 locked...
I would say more than just probably
I only own IOS stardew valley but if I opened a tcp tunnel through ngrok on a pc and routed it to my ipad’s ip address then would i be able to host an online stardew valley game? or is it only pc that can host a game
I... think you're in the wrong chat
I would say one of the channels in the "Stardew Valley" tab, this channel is specifically for non-SV related stuff. I'm guessing you're not talking about modded SV so making-mods-general doesn't seem relevant here.
oh alr
I thought there was
Ayyyy

i have spent 2 hours fighting prisma. I gave up
I always return to just writing sql queries

why are databases so expensive
oh yeah i could totally just throw this on a vps fair point
oh but no i can't use next then
(i like next)
i could just write a seperate db backend though
I'm pretty sure the db costs r actually price of paying for a college kid to go poke at the ☁️ for you
If u just spin up own postgres on bare metal it can't be that bad right
almost definitely not bad
can't imagine you need any kind of paid db for 30k records
at that point you could probably even manage with an in memory database
somehow i hit 80% of neon's free tier storage limit so am looking for options
ok and what happens if i need to update the server that hasn't been restart in.. 258 days
a persisted in memory database
oh so operations in memory but it commits to storage
like node-persist but probably better
You have lost your license of being considered a regular here /s
that'd be terrifying for databases terabytes in size
But they have big ol shared mem for this
and not just a key value
yeah
what do you mean there are 500kb of upgradeable packages apt i just did update
A long time ago i was involved in a hobby thing where
tbh i'll probably do postgres i am quite liking it
CPU (cascading package updates)
One guy has a workflow that put data in a sqlite file on a cdn every game update
Everyone else using that data just dl it
It works bc the game data doesn't update every day
“Oh you have a newer version of X installed? You can now use a newer version of Y (not usable with the version of X you used to be on)!”
Mods unfortunately update more frequently
for now
Pillow is making a mod indexing thing
Not counting Apache mods
imma make a mod manager that uses your distro's package manager
But the cascading package updates were through apt, which presumably is used for indexer itself and not the things being indexed (ie. The mods)
Ah yea
Oh boy I love waiting for the approval and redistribution process upstream
I wonder how pacman deals with this actually, dont think i ever noticed needing to do update twice
(I don’t know how bad that is usually, I just hear some distros are pretty bad)
Maybe it does it like a dependency tree, where after it updates root stuff, then it checks further down?
Or multiple passes in one command
"sorry you won't get the new version of the mod until you upgrade to the newest version of linux mint"
Since windows has no built in package manager (last I heard), they are the only ones who get updates as they are finished development
Window users get to be the beta testers

Well in my defense I’ve been isolated in c# land for ages so nuget is usually enough for me 😛
hey? quick question? when it comes to making mods and/or learning how to program? should i take up free courses on it? i wanna know cause some schools are doing free programing courses
harvard is doing free courses! including on programing! idk if this is off topic but hey? why not?
https://pll.harvard.edu/catalog/free?price[1]=1&page=0
plus many are online especially computer science and some programing courses
that wasn't that bad actually https://i-have-not.got-your.info/axIVPEWJZh

A power outage made my decision about being productive for me. I was forced (forced, I say) to go have dinner from the DeathXTaco food truck at the pub instead.
fortunately(?) the power company claims my power is back on now so I don't have any good excuses to keep from being productive now.

Classic r/patientgamers move
A gaming sub free from the news, hype and drama that surround current releases, catering instead to gamers who wait at least 12 months after release to play a game. Whether it's price, waiting for bugs/issues to be patched, DLC to be released, don't meet the system requirements, or just haven't had the time to keep up with the latest releases.
That's part of it but honestly it's also just epic time blindness
"oh that looks interesting. I'll try it some time." and then it takes me 10 years to get around to it

Hello guy, who have any idea why ConsoleApp c# it's lock run at 33fps?
i don't know why 🥲
frame time it's 30ms, why?, i have Thread.Sleep(16) ms
how is fpscounter implemented
Pastebin.com is the number one paste tool since 2002. Pastebin is a website where you can store text online for a set period of time.
i test Sleep(1ms) i got 60fps, 😂
Unsurprising given that you aren't artificially delaying it now
hrm I'm not really sure
why would it be unsurprising
not like this program is in any way tied to the monitor refresh rate
60 should be an arbitrary number
I know thread.sleep is very unreliable on windows which I'm sure plays a role but idk
idk other than Thread.Sleep shenanigans I'm not really sure what it could be from a vague glance at the code
these both indicate that your loop without the sleep takes about 15ms
so with 15ms sleep it takes close to 30, with 1ms sleep it takes 1
but how would doing absolutely nothing except a fairly minimal amount of writelines take 15 ms
question is what's taking those 15ms (probably the fps counter, but why)
no clue, but the maths is pretty consistent between the two cases
I would test doing 1000 calls to fps.Update() and the writelines (not using a loop, copy and paste it) to see how long it takes total
what does Stopwatch.Frequency return
could opt to use the static Stopwatch.GetTimestamp and Stopwatch.GetElapsedTime instead since they don't have nearly as much overhead as initializing and running stopwatches
😵💫
Thread.Sleep is weird on Windows
Oh thanks
Hello, any one have idea
what a best way to compress sprite pixel byte[]?
lz4? or RLE or other method?
i have test RLE it, compress from 4m byte up to 6m+ byte 😂
Perhaps not the best RLE scheme then
and now i try to use Png compress + decompress
i use SKBitmap Png that works & good
from 3_686_400 byte down to 52_409 byte
ratio compress around: 60, 70
but image.Encode(..) png & no lossless it take time around 30ms
i use LZ4 and here result
before: 3,686,400 byte
after: 148, 018 byte
ratio: 24
use 1ms for compress
original size: 13783040
compress pixel time: 3.4452
compress size: 592417
good!
How does tigervnc handle things
what is triggervnc?
Tigervnc. Remote desktop
I have severe distate for a particular VNC server I used to use a while back. I don't remember which one, but it shipped with an absolutely inexcusably horrendous default configuration, and it made me angy.
i thought remote desktop stuff is like streaming video basically
Well it can't possibly be taking up 30% of server time
It is, it's close to what narathip is trying to do
ah sorry, currently my project i'm try to streaming some game render FrameBuffer
send back to Unity
But I don't see VNC at all in top
So clearly they have a way that...maybe they only send diffs or smth
(And just to clarify this... it shipped with fucking UPnP enabled BY DEFAULT. On a bloody VNC server.)
I only found out about it because I was talking to someone on Steam in bed, while having the chat window open on my computer.
I felt it kinda weird that all of a sudden I was spamming random console input into my Steam chat.
if you want it for gaming, you can try sunshine/moonlight
i switch DeliveryMethod for send frame buffer from ReliableOrdered to Unreliable
i think that is good, but streaming FPS not smooth
and game run works fine
aw but what about the 3D
here, some Furniture & Farmer renderer
i just want to try streaming terrain ground, floor
currently i haven't combine (screen streaming * background) and Sprite 3D renderer
i need to remap & use magic code for convert game position 😂
I remember once with SFML I accidentally did sleep(0) (because of math) and uh…. Sleep(0) does not behave intuitively, that’s for sure
I want to code
but I don't want to write code

Morning, crumble+
Me & my ADHD the past while
+2 minecraft mod ideas yesterday, but have I progressed on any of them? Noooooo
I got a burst of it all and ended up getting my mods building in a GitHub runner today. That's something, right?
I have serious ideas for three stardew frameworks
This is on topic
not if I never make them!
Right, it's MAKING-mods-general, not FANTASIZING-mods-general
I'm sure I have notes on ideas for things for spacecore somewhere on my computer
what if I throw some of them at you, casey
One of those ideas is actually finishing the docs on the new website I started!
and bully you into making them /lh
Maybe hold off until I get back into SDV modding, then there might not even need to be bullying involved 😛
the real problem is that I really shouldn't work on them until I update a different mod but I don't wanna
(Real talk, I would kinda like to split spacecore into two - original mod being the basic stuff, new mod being stuff that would require every client to have it (like things adding netfields). But given the compatibility problems that wouldn't really be feasible outside of if another major mod breaking update happens to base game)
(Getting dangerously on topic so I'll stop there)
I want to do my minecraft mods but first I need to make the C# to Java toolchain 😔
the what
C# to Java toolchain
New quote added by atravita as #6400 (https://discordapp.com/channels/137344473976799233/1215712021207720006/1378855193554190376)
For coding Minecraft mods in C# but having them run in the Java
that's terrifying
Casey's been doing the darkest of magic.
I found a library that'll do the hard part... for very old .net and java.
I tried updating it and it "works" until you run the result.
Well, not quite the darkest...
so... it doesn't
(My hello world console app crashes on launch, with a different error each time)
I mean it might work if I stuck with Java 8 and .net framework 😛
But I wanna mod modern Minecraft
The part that generates reference assemblies from jar files seems to work fine
you can compile fabric mods with java 8 and they work on latest, idk about forge
It seems like it's struggling with stuff related to new C# stuff though (mainly Span stuff)
But .net framework would make me sad 😦
DH... why
Although maybe I could look at what things are purely language features and/or would work with a polyfill
wouldnt you be using .net framework anyway
No, I've updated it to work with .net core (besides not actually running)
oooh
And once I hypothetically get that finished, I'll need to do the build system part. Integrating MS build with maven
So I can reference forge/fabric, and other mods
And then I'll need to figure out debugging and hot reload
Probably will have to do VSCode for that since the time I tried making a VS extension, it wouldn't actually do anything

the people want answers, dh
I likes it better when you guys were on topic

.choose attempt to decipher the inner workings of my corrupted (ie. JVM-ified) C#, continue to avoid it like any sane programmer would because of the risk of the corruption spreading
Choose result: continue to avoid it like any sane programmer would because of the risk of the corruption spreading
Woo
Guess I'll just sit around thinking about minecraft mods (both my ideas and actually playing) instead
I barely squeaked into the next round, chue
I'm actually curious ngl
About some part of it specifically?
Oh, yeah, I can't answer that because I don't know what's going on there
I looked at the decompiled-as-Java version and it isn't simply mapping to System.out.println
It's going through some layers of JVM-ified-C#-Streams and Span stuff
The all important question. What is for dinners
I'm just not sure how it manages to be non deterministic. It baffles me
...you know how in some settings the eldritch corruption is slightly addicting like forbidden knowledge often is?
I'm kinda feeling that way at the moment for figuring out what the heck is going on, but still not wanting to deal with it
Hmm. The safest answer I can give: "food"
(Dinner is a problem for later, more hungry me)
is it just me or is it really annoying to drag and drop files on the sidebar in vs code? i cant scroll while doing that so i have to wait for the folders to slowly scroll down on its own
Oh, yeah it's kinda annoying. I would just right click and open in a real file manager to do it
Tired: doing useful shit
Wired: putting c0ffee in as my test data in as many places as I can
at my old job (retail software) I made a product called horse to use for testing cause I found it amusing to think about someone buying a horse at the cash register. I got so used to using that product that even now when I need a random name for something my mind goes to horse
yup here's the cable wiring scheme called horse
i can't believe #c0ffee isn't the color of coffee
Is it just called Horse or is this some elaborate scheme to get people to reach to this with "Pardon?", only for the person who came up with it to go "yeah, paarden!"
I'll see myself out
lmao your dutch pun game is already better than my own
I'm afraid I had no such motives
nor did it ever happen
a shame
Every now and then I hit bestie with one and can see him rethinking his strategy of forcing me to speak Dutch with him
regret mixed with pride
let’s see if my rgb guessing skills are decent, I’m guessing roughly this colour
should be brighter I think
okay not too far, hue was very close (160degrees vs 164) but saturation and value were pretty far off
apparently it's official name is "Humming Bird"
Breaking News: Big Coffee found to be using humming birds as their main ingredient
Very concerning
foolish we were for thinking that the primary ingredient in coffee was water
i once compiled a bunch of rgb hex triplets that are both cromulent words and pleasant colors to look at. i'm not sure where it ended up
#facade is the one i remember offhand. it's a lovely pink
Makes me thinks of things like 0xDEADBEEF.
I just looked at the wikipedia page that lists that, and saw some I had never seen before. I'm not sure what to think about the "Formerly required by Microsoft's Hyper-V hypervisor ..." one, or the "OpenSolaris core dumps" one (for different reasons for each of them).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_number_(programming)#Debug_values
idk where to put this but someone who mods hear me out but we need pride flags in stardew ngl
Stardew modding stuff going in one of the making mods channels or #modded-stardew , but I'm pretty sure there are many pride mods available on nexus if you search
Cuteeee
I like 8badf00d ngl
I hope you're not calling either of the ones I mentioned (especially the latter) cute
I'm just using 0xc0ffee because yeahhhh
I love fun hex stuff.
I need debug values
I live off coffee
What is not to love
https://tangogameworks.com any one want to make games well the new tangogameworks is hiring

Very useful MS, thanks
They require speaking Japanese, and are hybrid at best (so no working from another country, and they're in Japan), so not sure how much audience that'll have in a English-only server like this one
I could be part of the audience for this, but the results of my Japanese language midterms are saying otherwise
I can just barely read the job posting very slowly so I don't think it's working out for me either
(nor do I meet any of the other requirements)

Welp, I'm out of the race anyway
ngl I look at the “about the team” pages of companies like these and wonder if there’s even a point to apply for women in dev atp (this is a very small team, but check out nexus for a fun example)
like even if companies like that hire me, what are the odds it wouldn’t be extremely awkward at best
it can work out fine but yeah very male dominated
Fwiw it can work out - there are about six women in the company I work for - but a lot has to align.
my sister's a dev and has been fine so far (other than regular work issues like investment stakeholders ruling what gets done)
oh, I'm not worried about dev in general, just game dev
dev in general has and always had women in it
in fact, women were doing dev work before men were
iro are you a game dev?
according to my tumblr feed, a lot of trans women as well
I'm not but I'm looking into getting work in general rn
(I could rant about the myth that programming is "becoming" more open to women or that it used to be only for men for hours - it is so untrue that there was a time when it was considered to be only for women)
there are many states for the player, running, walking, standing still.
i wonder when making the animation sprite sheet, is it best to make all three animations in one image (being ordered in a sequence ofc)?
or for each state it should be a separate image, and by state i meant the three states mentioned above.
Depends! Ideally, you would have every single image (world, characters, items, literally everything) in one large texture.
Outside of that, which modern engines... might... do automatically(?), it's just personal organisational preference.
yeah, it's hard to really talk about ideal setups in matters like these without knowing a LOT more about what exactly you're using
I'll say for example that if you're using Godot and the AnimationPlayer node, having everything in one image is stupidly nicer to work with.
Otherwise you also need to animate/keyframe sprite texture changes, which is just... ew, no.

I'm the only woman in my company's development department, with nine guys around me (the other woman retired due to age). And the only people applying for a job here are more guys. Maybe it's good that we're not developing games - the guys are mostly married, definitely mature - which I wouldn't expect the stereotypical game dev to be 😄
Literally everything or could you hypothetically have things split into a couple of sheets
Having the entire game's textures on one sheet sounds like a cursors situation on a large scale
Mum's in the interesting role of being the "older woman dev-turned-manager the female freshers look up to" now, but throughout her career she always had lots of female colleagues. The men were definitely the majority, but not by much, from what she told me
I always find it so interesting when I find out that this isn't the case elsewhere
Her best interns have been women, too, it was always a scramble to get them on her team before they could get assigned elsewhere in the company
May be a cultural thing. Germany is not exactly known to be overly progressive in terms of equal chances independent of gender in any technological field (maths, engineering, it ...)
India isn't known to be particularly progressive either, but we did have a solid IT boom in the 90s and early 00s and many cultures within the country encourage women to work, so IT tends to be a good choice for women
My mother and her sisters were expected to get a good education and get jobs, same went for my dad's sisters
We did have 2 female applicants from India, actually. Both quit after their parents found a husband for them, and went back to India.
Bleh
I agree
The day my parents attempt to find me someone is the day I book an appointment with a neuro for them because it'll be so damn out of character
My parents expect me to build a career for myself, a life partner is secondary
My grandparents, both the ones still living and the ones no longer with us, feel the same way
Also this is a missed opportunity on the husbands' parts, could've gone to Germany to be with their wives instead
Yep, if they had wanted to
My uncle did that, went to the States as my aunt's dependent and then got work there himself so they could both earn
I rarely understand people, but some I understand even less
I have my theories as to why they wanted to remain in India and none of them are heartwarming
Arranged marriages/marriages that arise from matrimony websites are either supremely happy, or incredibly unhappy, no in-between
The happy ones tend to be ones where the couple are supportive of each other and make a good team, like any normal happy marriage
and if you’re managing asset loading yourself, it’s probably also better to avoid loading more assets individually…
it actually likely became less the case since your mum started out - if anything, the number of women in tech have reduced a few times since then as far as I can tell
the numbers haven't reduced in India, oddly enough
Doesn't seem to have, anyway
And she works for a lucrative, high-paying startup rn so the competition to get in is pretty fierce, but she still has a fair few, much younger, female colleagues
is it on topic to this channel to ask why discord introduced the ability to react or reply to pfps...
sorry for singling you out quill, but... why
How dare they shave pixels off my height in my pfp with this nonsense
discord as always with their finger on the pulse of what the people really want (features that invite abuse, like sending replies to people's profile pictures! seems cool! /s) and ignoring useless stuff (features that might mitigate abuse, like letting users control their own ping preferences)
the absolute best part? the "reaction" just sends the emote as a DM marked "reaction to pfp", in the exact same way that the "reply" works
I'm gonna try my best to draw reply to your pfp
the feature literally works by sending a regular dm which says
> -# *Reacted to <default display name>’s avatar*
:<emote>:
you can edit the message as normal btw, it is very much a normal DM
with some default text
Anyways, social media be social media lol
I would love to know what the meeting was like where this feature was suggested
i found it
Faeces seems... wrong for the meaning
i'm sure the list is longer. i curated this one
It's just fun seeing 0xc0ffee or 0×deadbeef up on terminal
Instead of the boring 0x55aa55aa
I'm just gonna go write a script that finds all legal hexadecimal 6- and 8-letter words + all words that are legal hex if you replace similar looking letters with digits
Where's eigengrau? /j
which would be... 1=i or L, 4=A, 5=S, 7=T, 0=o ig
no need for e=3 or 6=b because those are already legal hex digits
I also just now realised what was happening with the colours... that's very nice.
thank you
how did you find them, ichor? manually coming up with them? because that's impressive
more or less! i'm pretty sure the unix dictionary files were involved, to get me a word list, and then i looked for nice ones
it was years ago at this point. i whipped up a little html page to display them and left it in a corner of my hard drive and i stopped when i got bored (i'm sure i could have found more)
ba5eba11 is a fun one

with a word list from SCOWL with parameters:
diacritic: strip
max_size: 35
max_variant: 1

there are 381 such words in this list (but they aren't all very readable)
Z can also be a 2
or b = 6
oh wait, B is already valid in hex 😄
yeah
aquo added 14 new words, for a total of 395
And how many valid words exist in that list without any number replacements?
we've all been there
tbf it worked for my initial purpose that's in the code above
holly shit, that's probably my favorite english word
to answer your question, 10
(I learned a lot of english from Portal)
accede, beaded, bedded, beefed, cabbed, dabbed, decade, deeded, deface, facade
your script missed "faffed"
no worries, i just remember it from mine
it's probably in the higher parameter lists
min scowl size for faff to appear seems to be 55
(faff is also one of my favorite english words)
that's the right color for asbestos iirc
They're doing asbestos abatement on the other side of my floor rn
such color
okay: a higher scowl size adds decaff, efface and faffed
but it also raises the total number of words to 575
Scowl size
i'm picturing you scowling more and more

grumpier and grumpier faces until the word list does your bidding
elizabeth, what colour are acetates in your experience
trick question! they're green

it's definitely not as all in as say the early 2010s
Skip every other Windows version continues to be the best advice.
