(I can't comment on elixir, I don't know anything about those outside of fantasy potions)

safe dragon
#

elixir is mainly used for distributed network/web server type stuff

#

built on erlang/otp by ericsson which was built pretty much entirely for telecom originally

#

part of the goal is "whatever happens, the network should never go down"

#

integers resizing themselves is... I suppose a minor win in that regard

dusty pollen
#

no they just barely work

have you ever used a glue gun and wondered if you could build something 3d out of it? that's pretty much the experience

#

I use yadm! I quite like it. I recommend it to anyone who's already comfortable with git

safe dragon
#

it was about as easy as it gets to set up so no complaints

dusty pollen
#

not exactly - yadm is based on a weird trick with git repos and the base directory being different to the work tree base. I can't remember the exact details but I'm pretty sure there's very little symlinking involved

#

as far as I'm aware you could set up an almost identical system with pure git and you'd only be missing the advanced stuff like per machine configs etc

safe dragon
#

right the symlink thing is gnu's thing

#

iirc you don't need to do this, you can do what yadm does instead which makes everything untracked by default. I could be wrong though SDVpufferthinkblob

#

tl;dr both floating and fixed points (and decimals, for that matter) have infinite precision if you have infinite bits/digits but not if you don't. Fractions just can't represent a lot of the real numbers at all (e.g. pi or e)

One of these days I really need to get a 3D printer.

#

Probably not a resin printer though. I'd like something multi-material.

#

(Also, resin printers are spoopy. Too many fumes.)

sand frost
#

Resin printers are godawful messy

#

They’re goopy AND spoopy

#

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the Bambus at work

#

They can do multimaterial but some models are worse at it than others

frosty echo
marble jewel
#

I have a Bambu P1S, and it really sets the standard for a filament-based printer, that's multi-material, and is dead simple to use. That said, they've been making a few anti-consumer changes lately, so if I were looking for a printer today, I might spend some more time researching the other options.

supple ether
#

pi and e are irrational yes. which by definition means you can't write them as fractions, you can only approximate

devout vault
#

But you can't with decimal based notation either

#

Like, aren't decimals kinda sorta just a notation akin to a bunch of 10^x based fractions added together

sand frost
#

you could write them as continued fractions

#

but yes, you're right assuming finite decimal points

#

with infinite decimal points, it's an infinite number of fractions added

devout vault
#

But if we're using infinite decimal digits, we can also use infinite digits for fractions

sand frost
#

I need to backread to find the context here xD

devout vault
#

Base 10 fixed point numbers are just fractions in a trench coat

sand frost
#

I think I agree with you here

#

It's just that using infinite digits for fractions isn't really a supported operation

devout vault
# sand frost I need to backread to find the context here xD

It originally started from atra joking about us not being in a simulation because we don't experience floating point inaccuracy (which came from when I showed a video and gif of how bad it is for the guy who has been walking to the Far Lands (12 million blocks from spawn) in Minecraft 1.7 for literal years)

sand frost
#

our universe is kinda...discrete tho

devout vault
sand frost
#

oh hmm i guess we don't have that problem

#

Yeah! decimals have an obvious like "next decimal place"

#

if you adjust a fraction to be closer, you have to fundamentally change all of it, often

cinder karma
sand frost
#

(depending on how much closer etc etc)

#

Like if you look at the fractions that best approximate pi, they have nothing in common with each other

#

even with infinite digits for fractions, it isn't possible!

devout vault
#

If you can represent pi with an infinite amount of digits, shouldn't you be able to just do: <infinite digits of pi but without the decimal point>/(10^<the infinite amount of digits minus one, however that would work>)

#

I know "infinity minus one" isn't strictly a thing but I'm pretty sure mathematically there are like different sized infinities somehow, so seems reasonable at a glance. (Though obviously I'm not gonna do a formal proof for it. šŸ˜› Not that I know how)

dusty pollen
#

infinity minus one is not a thing in any theory SDVpuffersquee the different sizes of infinities mean something kind of different

#

which is why this doesn't work

devout vault
#

I figured, but I'm also not a mathematician

#

Therefore, this is good for me and I will not accept any counterarguments from people who understand the subject better than I do

I looked up literacy rates for Indiana then noticed the date in this image, so had to google a bit further.

Indiana lagged the rest of the Midwest with the lowest literacy and education rates into the early 20th century
Okay, I guess that tracks.

(From Wikipedia "History of Indiana", with a source that I didn't read because why in the world would I read an entire academic paper for some random discord conversation)

Iro's approached it from the formal math perspective

How the fuck does svn handle symlinks, atra asks on Monday morning

It's fine haha, it's just that it's not actually in my job description to deal with the version control but my general linuxfu means I end up doing this

In this case he committed a symlink to an output directory

#

We're still slowly moving projects over to git from svn, so I have the fun of working in both for now.

safe dragon
#

I've only ever used git

#

I've experienced my fair share of "what's version control" but no svn

marble jewel
#

You haven't even used copies of files on sharepoint, with the "version" appended to the filename, where you end up with 16 copies of a file with one of them named "some file v2 - final (2)"

safe dragon
#

I've never used sharepoint...

#

technically my current job uses sharepoint but it's currently broken and they've been trying to fix it for months now to little success

marble jewel
#

I mean, you can substitute sharepoint with Google Drive or Dropbox, and same deal

safe dragon
#

now for google drive that's just exactly how I worked in uni

#

the database guy for the old microsoft access application thing I'm rewriting does version control by having a bunch of versions of procedures saved in .txt files

#

not even sql

#

txt

#

he uses notepad(not ++) as his editor so I guess the file extension doesn't really matter...

marble jewel
#

I have a guy who does the same thing. On meetings he'll share his screen with notepad open where he saves all of his notes.

safe dragon
#

it's been a fascinating experience working in a team of generally non-programmer people

marble jewel
#

The person I'm referring to is a senior software developer, but has been in the role for like three decades

safe dragon
#

they share the three decades part

#

except mine is not even considerd a software developer

#

I think his official title is consultant even though he's the sole developer of this application

marble jewel
#

To some extent, I can understand why some people never bother learning anything beyond what they know. It's kind of the whole "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" but I just can't imagine allowing myself to stagnate that much

cinder karma
#

Everyone has their own skillset

#

Not everyone has to be an expert on everything

marble jewel

Part of it for me is I just don't want to obsolete myself by depending on the skills I have which are relevant now but probably won't be for much longer

safe dragon
#

dude honestly has a pretty good grasp of sql and database optimization even though he uses notepad and is a holy believer in the "big items table instead of different tables per item type" all while I hear and see him work with like 500 workarounds to deal with it all being in 1 table

#

anything beyond this narrow little corner of oracle database he knows pretty much nothing however

#

his plan is to retire in 2 years however so becoming obsolete would honestly be his end goal at this point

crystal wren
#

@devout vault, you hear that?

marble jewel
#

For me, playing with mods has been like getting early access to QOL or aesthetic features. A lot of times, the mods I play with end up becoming vanilla features.

#

Particularly in Minecraft and SDV, some mods have been a less-polished version of what ends up becoming part of an update

#

That's mostly because I don't play with mods that are too game-changing so they're already well-aligned with vanilla goals

sand frost
#

also they were all solidworks parts

#

notably, solidworks does have its own version control system

#

the dropbox system was a notable upgrade from that

The only stance on mods that bothers me is the one where people dislike them because it goes against the original developers vision and the modders should just make their own game.

I know someone like this and it confuses me greatly. Like, to me it just reeks of ā€œI have no idea how much time and effort it takes to make a gameā€ sort of thing (and I believe we were talking about Skyrim, not some indie game).

It’s doubly confusing because they used to (and maybe still do occasionally?) do WoW raiding and so I’m 99% certain they used addons for that, or at least something like Advanced Combat Tracker since they talked about dps numbers and whatnot.

supple ether

the only thing with 16:9 is that it's awkward to read on

fleet wren
safe dragon
#

it is right now...

#

if it weren't completely impractical it would kinda be aesthetically nice to have a third vertical monitor right in between these 2 rn

supple ether
# supple ether the only thing with 16:9 is that it's awkward to read on

like, you can't use the full width, because then the lines are too long and it's easy to get lost while reading, but if you make them narrower, then you have a ton of unused space on either side. You can do multiple columns, but then you can't do a continuous vertical feed, you have to do pages and it's just kind of awkward

safe dragon
#

I rarely read on my pc for that reason tbh

marble jewel
#

Trying out a tiling window manager on an ultrawide is fun, because it tries to fill the space, and a full-width browser is unbearable

supple ether
#

yeah that's a major reason why I will never get an ultrawide monitor

marble jewel
#

A whole paragraph can be just a single long line across the screen

safe dragon

Game: ||FFXIV - specifically, the Endwalker expansion||
The joke: ||The answer to "what psychopath sent a bunny to the moon" is Hydaelyn||
Very spoilery details: ||Hydaelyn is introduced in the beginning of the game as basically the goddess of the world. But it turns she's actually one of the last beings of an ancient super powerful race who accidentally caused the apocalypse (other people of that race did, not her). She ends up creating the moon bunnies (Loporrits) to prepare to evacuate people in the future (ie. the timeframe the game takes place) to another planet in case the apocalypse happened again (because of a variety of plot reasons resulting in her even knowing to do this in the first purpose)||

(another member of the server who might know more context, spoiling because knowing who it is might give it away too considering they've talked about playing this game before šŸ˜› ) ||Khloe might know better on this, I only ever played the main story content and also had to refresh my knowledge on a fan wiki to explain the context||

Well depending on DP version and monitor resolution, you can daisy chain 6 monitors together off of one DP port, so for a 3 DP port card you could do up to 18 monitors. So with 2 cards you could hit 36.

Or, if you have a Macbook pro, then DP daisy chaining doesn't work, because Apple

I'm learning a lot about svn

#

Did you know about svn hooks

marble jewel
#

Would you say you're even coming around to liking it? /s

cinder karma
#

No

sonic mirage
#

I've only dealt with SVN in a situation where all the projects were in a monorepo, so branching wasn't really an option. So it basically acted like remote-only Git with no branches. Ignoring things was a bit more of a pain than Git, and you occasionally had to run the "clean up" when it would get out of sorts.

#

Not having branches for projects with multiple people working on them is a bit of a pain, it turns out

cinder karma
#

Yeah. I purposefully did something last night that left broken versions of a bunch of files on my system

#

So it's been a Fun Bit of playing with svn to reset everything

#

(Cadence knowers-i ran 6.1.8, not 6.1.7)

cinder karma
#

For other reasons in a different repo I need to jump around between different revisions and I was like "hey, why don't u just add it to your prompt so you don't get confused"

#

Welp

#

This is trivial in git

cinder karma
#

safe dragon
#

how does a monorepo prevent branching

#

is this an svn thing

sonic mirage
# safe dragon how does a monorepo prevent branching

My understanding is that branching in SVN copies the entire repo (or something like that). When it was critical that we had a branch - such as for a long term project where we still needed to be able to make updates to the "main" branch - we'd make a copy of just the one project's codebase in a branches folder which lived alongside that project's trunk folder.
