Who needs careful memory management
If you're using python you probably don't care about that anyways /s
Not a š
(I can't comment on elixir, I don't know anything about those outside of fantasy potions)
elixir is mainly used for distributed network/web server type stuff
built on erlang/otp by ericsson which was built pretty much entirely for telecom originally
part of the goal is "whatever happens, the network should never go down"
integers resizing themselves is... I suppose a minor win in that regard
no they just barely work
have you ever used a glue gun and wondered if you could build something 3d out of it? that's pretty much the experience
I use yadm! I quite like it. I recommend it to anyone who's already comfortable with git
it was about as easy as it gets to set up so no complaints
not exactly - yadm is based on a weird trick with git repos and the base directory being different to the work tree base. I can't remember the exact details but I'm pretty sure there's very little symlinking involved
as far as I'm aware you could set up an almost identical system with pure git and you'd only be missing the advanced stuff like per machine configs etc
same, and also atp I just know zsh shell script better than I do bash and can never go back
iirc you don't need to do this, you can do what yadm does instead which makes everything untracked by default. I could be wrong though
tl;dr both floating and fixed points (and decimals, for that matter) have infinite precision if you have infinite bits/digits but not if you don't. Fractions just can't represent a lot of the real numbers at all (e.g. pi or e)
Exactly why I said a faff and a half+
Xd
Iāve definitely done that
But in a certain philosophical sense, thatās just my research
(Not with plastic)
(Large robot helping me)
same, and ngl it may end up being easier than using a 3d pen
thereās something so satisfying about glue guns though. I get why all the content farms spam videos using them
A 3D pen is basically a very small calibre glue gun.
Why bother when I can play with real 3d printers tbh
gimme one
They come relatively cheap and not too terrible nowadays is my understanding!
then you give me one!
/lh
One of these days I really need to get a 3D printer.
Probably not a resin printer though. I'd like something multi-material.
(Also, resin printers are spoopy. Too many fumes.)
Resin printers are godawful messy
Theyāre goopy AND spoopy
Iāve been pleasantly surprised by the Bambus at work
They can do multimaterial but some models are worse at it than others
Also, toxic fumes
I have a Bambu P1S, and it really sets the standard for a filament-based printer, that's multi-material, and is dead simple to use. That said, they've been making a few anti-consumer changes lately, so if I were looking for a printer today, I might spend some more time researching the other options.
what is it with printer companies and being anti-consumer
More like s/printer //
sucks to hear āĀ we have so many Bambus that we are unlikely to switch over anytime soon, but we'll see how it is for the students
Shouldn't a fraction be able to represent any number a fixed/floating/decimal can, just with the right denominator? Like if you're using infinite bits/digits that applies to them too.
Also aren't pi and e infinite and so for either method you could you'd just have to stop at some point?
Like 3.141159 is just 3141159/1000000
Have you considered: Not having a place to put one
Work owns the 3d printer. I just play with it
This is, afaik, very common in tech jobs
pi and e are irrational yes. which by definition means you can't write them as fractions, you can only approximate
But you can't with decimal based notation either
Like, aren't decimals kinda sorta just a notation akin to a bunch of 10^x based fractions added together
you could write them as continued fractions
but yes, you're right assuming finite decimal points
with infinite decimal points, it's an infinite number of fractions added
But if we're using infinite decimal digits, we can also use infinite digits for fractions
I need to backread to find the context here xD
Base 10 fixed point numbers are just fractions in a trench coat
I think I agree with you here
It's just that using infinite digits for fractions isn't really a supported operation
It originally started from atra joking about us not being in a simulation because we don't experience floating point inaccuracy (which came from when I showed a video and gif of how bad it is for the guy who has been walking to the Far Lands (12 million blocks from spawn) in Minecraft 1.7 for literal years)
our universe is kinda...discrete tho
...any less supported than decimals?
oh hmm i guess we don't have that problem
Yeah! decimals have an obvious like "next decimal place"
if you adjust a fraction to be closer, you have to fundamentally change all of it, often
Smh plank constant tiny
(depending on how much closer etc etc)
Like if you look at the fractions that best approximate pi, they have nothing in common with each other
I don't think this is a problem for a civilization simulating our entire reality
This sounds like the work schedule of a startup with super bad work-life balance
Does this mean that eventually we will raech the end of pi /s
Huawei
<insert joke about the end of pi being when I eat it all>
I like 355/113
My cousin enjoys his regulation cot
but also sometimes pi = 3
||it's actually for his mid day nap because China does that||
||he is occasionally allowed off work||
Pi doesn't contain cheese
I don't only eat food that contains cheese
Even if I literally just got a bunch of cheesy food to eat
(Like, "literally just got" = just sat down from going to the from door to get it)
Yummm
fancy
so, fractions can only represent rational numbers, so there is no number that can represent pi and e. However, in theory, there is a number with an infinite number of decimal places for both of them, it just can be written down
even with infinite digits for fractions, it isn't possible!
If you can represent pi with an infinite amount of digits, shouldn't you be able to just do: <infinite digits of pi but without the decimal point>/(10^<the infinite amount of digits minus one, however that would work>)
I know "infinity minus one" isn't strictly a thing but I'm pretty sure mathematically there are like different sized infinities somehow, so seems reasonable at a glance. (Though obviously I'm not gonna do a formal proof for it. š Not that I know how)
infinity minus one is not a thing in any theory
the different sizes of infinities mean something kind of different
which is why this doesn't work
I figured, but I'm also not a mathematician
Therefore, this is good for me and I will not accept any counterarguments from people who understand the subject better than I do
you can construct pi using infinite sums of fractions but not using a single fraction
you keep going and I'll explain how p-adic numbers mean that the largest number in the world is -1
You mean like 3/1 + 1/10 + 4/100 + ...? That's basically the same thing as far as I'm concerned š (again, not a mathematician)
I don't know what that means and I don't want to
kind of
it's a Taylor series
<discrete math proofs war flashbacks>
Also, consider: this is for a hypothetical civilization simulating our entire reality, and they could have simplified how math works here for technical reasons. They could have math with more possiblities, somehow!
Saying "but what about this hypothetical alternate reality" is totally a valid argument, what are you talking about
also, respect, ancient Chinese mathematicians
Wow
and a lot less respect, non-ancient Indiana
(Also I do kinda think this way with some things.... like, I'm against capital punishment, but if this were a fantasy world where a villain was constantly using their powers as a WMD and there was no magic suppression sort of thing, I'm not sure what other option there would be until something like that could be invented)
wmd?
wha
weapon of mass destruction (like, you know, nukes)
ah
I feel like in a universe with magic but no magic suppression you'd have problems way before you get to that point
Are you saying my hypotheticals about applying principles of morality in this world to a fantasy world with magic and monsters and stuff aren't realisitic?????
I looked up literacy rates for Indiana then noticed the date in this image, so had to google a bit further.
Indiana lagged the rest of the Midwest with the lowest literacy and education rates into the early 20th century
Okay, I guess that tracks.
(From Wikipedia "History of Indiana", with a source that I didn't read because why in the world would I read an entire academic paper for some random discord conversation)
No
Iro's approached it from the formal math perspective
I'm approaching it from the information density perspective
From the information density perspective, information takes memory, and infinite memory is infinite space
You've got to cut it off somewhere
(It's doubly funny because physicists literally use 1 for pi)
Also 1 for every other constant
(mostly astrophysicists and quantum people, right?)
I believe that for those people, tau would be 10 iirc
because you're rounding based on nearest power of ten and tau is largely than sqrt(10) = 3.something
I would argue continued fractions mean this sort of is a thing , though I donāt recall offhand what the continued fraction for pi is like and maybe it doesnāt properly have a limit or something?
I meant a single fraction haha - it's also possible as an infinite sum of fractions through the Taylor series
any truncated continued fraction can be converted to a fraction, though, so there's a similar sequence approaching (though every fraction in the sequence has a different numerator and denominator)
How the fuck does svn handle symlinks, atra asks on Monday morning
The tl;dr is my coworker committed something he shouldn't have
Trying to unwind it
i know a guy named ichortower who's always committing things he shouldn't have, tbh
It's fine haha, it's just that it's not actually in my job description to deal with the version control but my general linuxfu means I end up doing this
In this case he committed a symlink to an output directory
And I maintain an unending hatred towards svn. If we were in git I could do this
(I'm not annoyed at coworker. I'm annoyed at svn.)
i have never used svn, and i hope i never have to given everything i have heard. (i do not expect to have to. everyone has moved on, and afaik the stragglers all wish they could)
yeah, but that's for truncated ones, and pi's continued fraction is infinite ofc, so it would be an approximation
We're still slowly moving projects over to git from svn, so I have the fun of working in both for now.
I've only ever used git
I've experienced my fair share of "what's version control" but no svn
You haven't even used copies of files on sharepoint, with the "version" appended to the filename, where you end up with 16 copies of a file with one of them named "some file v2 - final (2)"
I've never used sharepoint...
technically my current job uses sharepoint but it's currently broken and they've been trying to fix it for months now to little success
I mean, you can substitute sharepoint with Google Drive or Dropbox, and same deal
now for google drive that's just exactly how I worked in uni
the database guy for the old microsoft access application thing I'm rewriting does version control by having a bunch of versions of procedures saved in .txt files
not even sql
txt
he uses notepad(not ++) as his editor so I guess the file extension doesn't really matter...
I have a guy who does the same thing. On meetings he'll share his screen with notepad open where he saves all of his notes.
it's been a fascinating experience working in a team of generally non-programmer people
The person I'm referring to is a senior software developer, but has been in the role for like three decades
they share the three decades part
except mine is not even considerd a software developer
I think his official title is consultant even though he's the sole developer of this application
To some extent, I can understand why some people never bother learning anything beyond what they know. It's kind of the whole "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" but I just can't imagine allowing myself to stagnate that much
Part of it for me is I just don't want to obsolete myself by depending on the skills I have which are relevant now but probably won't be for much longer
dude honestly has a pretty good grasp of sql and database optimization even though he uses notepad and is a holy believer in the "big items table instead of different tables per item type" all while I hear and see him work with like 500 workarounds to deal with it all being in 1 table
anything beyond this narrow little corner of oracle database he knows pretty much nothing however
his plan is to retire in 2 years however so becoming obsolete would honestly be his end goal at this point
become unnecessary and leave
I need to be able to exchange my time for income for at least another 15-20 years so I hope my industry isn't doomed before then
that'd be nice
most of all I just really love what I do so I wanna keep doing it
right now I improve and expand my expertise almost entirely just due to innate curiosity
all tech related tho
I'm interested in the tech behind it though I have little interest in making mods
also small issue that I've never been into mods in any game
neither using nor making them
the only sdv mod I ever downloaded was some experimental multiplayer mod before there was an official thing cause a friend wanted to try it
and then they didn't have time so we never tried it
is that casey's one
i see
that was also like 8 years ago
perhaps 7
my stance on multiplayer 9 years ago
funny going back all those years and seeing names I recognize
this was the mod
I found it
in old chat messages
And unsurprisingly, it's Casey's!
incredible
I can't imagine the hell involved in wiring up multiplayer without being able to modify the game directly...
multiplayer is a nightmare regardless of the situation frankly
casey has the honor of making the only mod I've ever downloaded
@devout vault, you hear that?
For me, playing with mods has been like getting early access to QOL or aesthetic features. A lot of times, the mods I play with end up becoming vanilla features.
Particularly in Minecraft and SDV, some mods have been a less-polished version of what ends up becoming part of an update
That's mostly because I don't play with mods that are too game-changing so they're already well-aligned with vanilla goals
I did this, but we didn't change the name of the part, we just used the built-in versioning history
also they were all solidworks parts
notably, solidworks does have its own version control system
the dropbox system was a notable upgrade from that
I once had to debug a spreadsheet written by the "genius" (according to everyone we spoke to) previous intern which turned out to be using a VBA script hard linked to a specific sharepoint file with zero documentation
I was probably "that guy" long, long ago. I would still get calls years later about various macros I had written that were still out there in the wild.
said script was feeding into a very important document used for billing. It broke because the sharepoint file was deleted. It was deleted because nobody told the team managing it that it was being used so they haven't been updating it for months and decided to finally do some cleanup. The same was true for like the five other files it was hard referencing. If I ever meet that guy we will have to have a very long conversation about life choices.
I do believe something has gone wrong with the partitions on this raspi
you can partition a raspi?
the sd card, at least
ah, fair enough
I installed Lakka on it and transferring files onto it has... not been working
I thought for a moment the 4 has an ssd or something
all you need is a saw
crumble no
crumble yes
but yeah, bestie and I have been messing with this thing for like... 3 hours, now? even went out and got chicken as a break
so far, we have got:
- ethernet.
that's it
I've only ever installed NOOBS on my raspi
I don't think that's even maintained any more
my bluetooth controller connects to it, but with difficulty and then doesn't like button inputs very much, but I think you have to set up a config for that, which I will do tomorrow when it's not nearly midnight
does it have Bluetooth built in?
mine didn't but as I already said, it's a raspi 1
I assume improvements have been made
I can't believe there's something worse than using excel as a database
yeah, it's using excel as tables in a database and vba as a query
I learned very quickly that the only thing he was a genius about was ways to give me a migraine
1 billion years jail for that guy tbh
Also this has to be after cloud became a thing right
this would have been written in 2016-2017
so just a little, yeah
(also it relied on sharepoint which iirc is cloud?)
Sharepoint is now mostly cloud, but back then it would have probably been hosted
I think Sharepoint Cloud became more part of the package deal when Office 365 became a thing
office 365 was already a thing in 2016, wasn't it? I mean it was probably hosted but that's just for enterprise reasons haha
Probably, the last 10 years have all been pretty fuzzy. I can't tell what happened 3 years ago vs what happend 13 years ago.
13 years ago was WannaCry and the release of the switch
first of all, how dare you
It's gonna be fun when we can say Stardew Valley's release is closer to the original Harvest Moon than to today. We're not there yet, but I like to say that to make people feel older than they actually are.
Can't believe stardew valley came out 20 years ago
heartbleed was about 10 i think actually
-# no it wasn't those were both 2017
was heartbleed the intel one
did you know the original star wars' release date was closer to the construction of the pyramids than to the current date
See I don't remember wanna cry but I remember heartbleed
Only in a galaxy far, far away
Heartbleed is older
Also
Heartbleed is 2014
Ooh okay
2017 is one of the bad depression years for me no wonder I have no memories
Thanks to the unlimited cloud storage of thousands of photos, I can rewind back to 2017 and have some faint memory of what happened then
Apparently, for me 2017 consisted of me mostly taking photos of my cats
Oh, and I got married so there's that
See, I also have almost no images from those years
I occasionally come across something stupid like "wow my workflowy has undone tasks from 2015"
Here is one of few real photos I have from that year
Of a cute street kitty
iirc it was openssl
The Intel one is spectre
Heartbleed was the out of bounds memory access in openssl
Spectre was speculative execution
why don't bugs get fun names like that any more
only big bugs get fun names, and for better or for worse (mostly better) we don't get lots of big bugs nowadays
back in the olden days where mail clients straight up execute attachments we get fun bug names once every other week
Yeah not having Harmony made that extra Fun (in the Dwarf Fortress sense, kinda)
Thatās the gateway modding. Soon youāll be adding content that is just right for fitting into vanilla, then adding small deviations that go well with it, until you end up with a 50000+ mod pack that a vanilla player would say āis this really the same game with mods or is it a separate game spirited by this oneā
The only stance on mods that bothers me is the one where people dislike them because it goes against the original developers vision and the modders should just make their own game.
I know someone like this and it confuses me greatly. Like, to me it just reeks of āI have no idea how much time and effort it takes to make a gameā sort of thing (and I believe we were talking about Skyrim, not some indie game).
Itās doubly confusing because they used to (and maybe still do occasionally?) do WoW raiding and so Iām 99% certain they used addons for that, or at least something like Advanced Combat Tracker since they talked about dps numbers and whatnot.
Charge $200/hr minimum 3 hours for consulting /s
erm this might sound very stupid but im new to Visual studio - how do you change the name of a project ur making without causing any problems?
like I tried changing name of a mod I m making and I started getting errors etc
I always end up manually editing the .sln and .csproj in a text editor to reflect the new name. there's probably a better way
I renamed the csproj and then just did dotnet sln add to re-add it to the sln
Which is probably the wrong way to do it but it worked
i remember both together somehow??
i think this is false
Somehow despite having heard of that exploit back then I could remember nothing about it.
Now that I read the wikipedia page I vaguely recall the domain killswitch thing and thinking how silly it was that they didn't pre-reserve the domain so someone else couldn't get it and stop the spread (like what ended up happening).
But now that I think about it that would've made it easier to find the culprit
Given the whois data stuff (even if you do a registrar's privacy service, it just lists the registrar data instead and the registrar would still have the data as to who you are)
Having it preregistered also would've killed it bc I assume it just tried to resolve it as opposed to actually connecting to it?
I do too for some reason but Iām not sure why
fun fact: nominet (the .co.uk official registry, basically the UK version of verisign) actually has privatisation built in
whereas verisign doesnāt so it has to be done by the registrars
I canāt remember what gets listed if you use that privatisation though. I think itās just redacted/empty iirc
It does! (Late reply, I'd conked off)
Y'all were both probably too young to remember each separately smh š
Especially you, iro
I was 17 during wannacry and spectre and 14 for heartbleed, but I think I may know why casey and I (or at least I) remember them togetherā¦
hmm, nope, never mind
atra arenāt you like. six years older than me
Then again, some of y'all can aim the "young/teensy" at me lol
(no clue. I thought I knew why but I didnāt)
Jessie holding my hand as I panick through the first recession I'm old enough to remember
Look I was a child in 2008 and a student in 2020
I was also a student in 2020! twinsies
All undergrads get the "you're so tiny and teensy" treatment from me
so in order to age I have to get another degree? no thank you this one was hell enough
I will stay a youths
Three years of work expirence count too
Does that mean i'm also old Atra?
You have young vibes
I'm glad you asked. Yes.
I'm 28 this month, finished my masters but only have 2 years work experience didn't know the vibe also matters
You're not bitter and jaded yet
Oh but i am
(I don't know I thought you were early 20s)
I've been bitter and jaded since i finished my masters tbh
I've mastered my "hello fellow kids"
How does that work
(Just in case for Atra's sake, that's a reference to a part of a TV show that later became a meme.)
I knew that reference!
Years of experience of being a cameleon in social situations because you have anxiety and now have the ability to quickly assess the vibes of the group and mold yourself to it
MUSIC ā” BAND
No idea the context but I've seen that meme before
What's funny is that irl people often misjudge my age, often by more than a decade lol
I look young
Me too, i get asked for id when buying beer even though drinking age is 18 and no one really cares about that anyway here
Case in point: someone once asked me at costco if I needed help pumping gas
Not wearing make up probably doesn't help me
It's doubly funny because I'm outside in the sun alll the time
Without spf?
Usually!
Are you going to look 20 until you're 40 and then suddenly look 70?
I need the vitamin D anyways
I got IDād 2 weeks ago
I am not close to being 18
I keep having to go to the doctor with my mom because i need assistance getting there and the doctor keep talking to my mom instead of me
Like you have my file you can literally see my age pls
The lady who works the front of house at the restaurant I stop by sometimes after work asked me if I was a nurse (so at least an adult!) and told me I was very young for a professor
I guess since I usually stop by at like 9pm she thought I worked weird hours
In her defense I do work weird hours
Yesterday I was at work 10am-5pm and 10pm-12am
One day Iāll be 60
10pm to 12 am!!
But they also think 60 year old man
That is true
I like to believe I'll look roughly the same at 60 as I do at 40
Looking at my family this is actually quite likely
Thatās only 2 hours!
You're healthy so probably
In thr middle of the night!!!!!
Besides the SPF situation
I had to fix my mistakes with an angle grinder
I donāt have time today to fix my mistakes because Iām meeting with students or other meetings until 8pm
Would 8pm on a Tuesday be better?
Slightly
I wish more mistakes could be fixed with an angle grinder
I don't drink so I never get id'd
One cute trick
It's always weirdly random and usually someone asking me if I'm old enough to drive or fly on mg own
I only drink some beer/wine with food in social settings
I did my drinking as a teenager, can't and don't want to do it anymore
I did my teenager stuff from like 14 to 17 but i was still the responsible one
The mom of the group
Ruining everyone's fun by making sure no one dies
I think by the time I was like, 15/16 I was already old and tired
I have sensory processing issues so I don't enjoy loud crowds, etc
For me that started at 18/19
I don't think I ever did "teenager stuff"
It's like as soon as i was actually allowed to do the stuff i was already so done with it
Tbh it never appealed to me
See i'm pretty sure part of the appeal to me was only because i liked a boy in that group and that was the only way to hang out with them
Which i guess in itself is "teenager stuff"
Ew, boys
cooties
Being trans but not realizing it meant I was deeply uncomfortable with myself and around other people, which kinda fucked over my teenage years completely, so I didn't do any teenage stuff, or really have much of a social life at all
Yeah if it's good
I spent my teenage years trying to be hard-core lol
Not in the fun way. The 1.5x course schedule way
i read that as hardcoded
can't tell if discord is blurry or I got used to the higher dpi of my laptop and now my pc looks weird
hrm
I got used to the higher dpi I think
that sucks
am I now forced into buying 4k monitors
https://www.apple.com/uk/pro-display-xdr/
Just force yourself to use high DPI scaling, as well as have no money anymore.
using the pro display xdr on linux would be an odd choice
I do need the vesa amount as well or it can't go on my monitor arm
worse glasses you mean
so it's no longer noticeable
i think the most recent update fucked with the fonts slightly. they also changed the :tm: to this ā¢ļø
Oh yeah, I was going to reply to that ping! I remember we were just brainstorming the basic platforming niceties that would improve it?
ā¢ļø
Yes but now I'm retired TM
discord simply loves to twiddle the knobs on unimportant stuff like "reducing accessibility" instead of things that might prevent misuse like "letting users control whether others can ping them"
And "let me pop out channels so I can keep an eye on things sensibly".
That one would be far, far too much, though.
if it doesn't have coyote jumping, it should. and also in the realm of "physics be damned", being able to adjust your horizontal position even a little bit would go very far
or figure out a way to get the level RNG not to generate impossible ("impossible") situations
Coyote time was the first biggest thing in the brainstorming, yup.
And a bit of jump buffering, just the very, very basics to start with.
RIP. I've been forced into 4k for years. I love them for coding. You can see so much at once
4K, 100% DPI scaling is where it's at.
Assuming your eyes/glasses make it manageable!
fractional scaling for the win
4k 100% is always manageable if the monitor is big enough
god it bothers me way more than I thought that things aren't as sharp
is it a wayland thing
you've become a snob
become?
time to get a 3:2 4k monitor
3:2 is really nice I gotta say
I do know what you mean tho, at work I have both a 4k and 1080p monitor and it's shocking looking at one screen versus the other
It has now
currently they're both 1440p 27" which makes things nice and consistent
it looks the same as it always did to me... I only notice that it changes from device to device
if I upgrade one I will inevitably end up upgrading the other
no no
you need a huge 4K monitor
then turn the 1440p ones vertical
where their horizontal size is the same as the 4k vertical size
I'm loving my main 4K 28" monitor, honestly. Still nice and readable, but also small enough that even without scaling things are super crispy.
I refuse to join in the monitor discussion lest you guys find out what resolution I use
640x480?
not QUITE that bad
1024x768?
honestly I've noticed that quite a few applications these days don't seem to even know how to deal with less than 1080p
it'll get weird
You skipped 800x600
i think so for one laptop, yeah, and I'm pretty sure everything else is 1366p
Let's just go through resolutions from the early 90s until now
or whatever it is. 1300?
... then I'd need a new monitor arm
you can balance some boxes together
1366p is a fucking crime and laptop manufacturers should pay for what they've done
At least I assume that's a laptop
so what will you do if I tell you one of these is a regular monitor
Such a weird number
one laptop, one monitor
oh god i had one of those, they are horrible
I hate that I kinda dig the idea of having 2 vertical monitors with a horizontal one in between
I like the single vertical, single horizontal monitor look (or at least I did when I used it at work as an intern lmao)
In the old, old days, I had an Asus Eeebook which had a weird resolution like 1366x768
yeah, both my laptops have that resolution iirc, or one is 1080p and one is that
You know what I really hate?
Actually no, it was the Eee PC and even worse. I think it was 800x480
Old TVs that expose themselves as 1080p but they're actually 1366x768
I'm looking up the models, and it was one of the earlier-gen ones
yeah I never got that. Was it because fewer people knew 1366p?
A lot of consumer electronics are stupid and don't understand any resolutions other than 720p and 1080p
You give them a weird resolution and they can't handle it
As a broke, starving, college student, that thing was a godsend, but in hindsight was horrendous
gorjus
That looks exactly as I remembered it
thats a widescreen laptop right there baby
that laptop looks like it can handle a 10 feet drop
Except I had the edition running Windows
that laptop could survive a nuke, right next to the original IBM thinkpads
this IS running windows, windows XP I think
or maybe not?
jfc what is that
That looks like their custom Linux os
i think it is, using one of those kiosk applications
That's definitely the weird version of Linux some of them came with!
they had a custom linux distro for a laptop? ahead of their time
That thing got me through years of basic computing needs. I even had it plugged into a monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
So underpowered, but served me well for the time
oh my god it's tiny
I got my first laptop when I was 12 in 2012
it wasn't my first laptop but it was the first one that i bought myself
when i was like 13
I got my first laptop when I was 19 in 2012
saved all the money from christmas and birthdays
I still have it but it's in like a million parts and ngl it looked almost identical to one of my current laptops
and this is what i spent it on
Yeah, my first laptop was a second hand ThinkPad not too long ago...
(which was bought to replace it)
That was my first laptop, and I was like 19 when I bought it
it was my one big bat mitzvah present
that and a kindle
bat mitzvahs are THE big birthdays for us so my parents bought me a bottom of the range £300 laptop
which I took apart myself in my room to repair so many times. fun times
i had a laptop but my 13 year brain was upset my mom was taking it away so it thought "if you buy one it is yours so she can't take it away!"
mine i think it was also like $300
in like 2010
I remember playing some educational computer game on a laptop that i think ran windows XP but it was not my personal laptop
I found it in the closet years later and i went "wow this thing was heavy"
everything is so thin and light now
I kind of wish I still had my little eeePC. I eventually modded it with a higher capacity SSD, and ended up installing Ubuntu to it. I think I even did a screen replacement repair.
every techy's first step into hardware: frankensteining their old pc/laptop instead of buying one that was made in the last decade
(mine has an HDD in the disk reader slot!)
After that part of my life, I got into PC building next
oh i absolutely had an eeepc 701 (the 800x480 kind) which i got explicitly to tinker with and because it was dirt cheap. i got a 901 (1024x600) at some later point, also for loose change, and i think i might still have it lying around
I forgot how I look for my resolution on this laptop... time to look up xorg commands
okay they're both 1366p
my favorite monitor i ever owned was an absolutely beastly CRT that did 1600x1200 back around 2003 or 2004. second place goes to a 1280x1024 LCD from slightly later which was almost certainly rubbish but i vividly remember giggling with delight at how small it was
The netbook category carried me through my young-adult life
my first two laptops were both 15"
solid black plastic. could be used as a melee weapon
also from the mid-00s era was a mostly-terrible gigantic dell laptop which somehow pushed 1600x1200 on about 15 inches. it had PCMCIA card slots, which you had to use to do wifi. it weighed an unconscionable number of pounds
I mean that's just what laptops were back then. Or is that when they started calling things Notebooks because you shouldn't use them on your actual lap.
but they provided so much warmth during winter
truthfully i don't remember that well. i only remember complaining about the giant laptop among my friends who were also laughing at how bulky it was /lh
and the other thing i remember is how good the screen was and how it spoiled me on laptops for (checks notes) decades
I don't recall a giant laptop era š¦
this is what I'm imagining ichor
my dad had one of those when i was little
Ah. Yeah. Never saw one that big
that's very close, yeah! but like twice as deep from front edge to screen
(also I think you may have just solved a mystery I never bothered to look into re what the mystery slot on the old thinkpad I have lying around is)
those fucking pc cards
you could get other cards but i only ever had a wifi one
we only ever had macbooks back then, but I remember windows users acted like they were a grand invention, even tho it seemed like they were always more trouble than they were worth
I have to do math....how old was I in 2012
How old was I when I got my first laptop
None of these are questions I have answers too
You are timeless
It was wide b4 and now it long
but it feels so out of proportion...
I touched one of my monitors this morning and the monitor arm decided it was suddenly too weak to hold it up. Had to crank up the compression screw on it and after being fine for a couple years. Weird.
I'm not sure how to feel about vertical monitors... I think I'm just gonna have it be like this for a while and see if I hate it
The amount of force needed in my monitor arm to counteract my monitor's weight is so high that without the monitor it could knock your teeth out
my monitor arm is set to the Correct Ergonomic Height which looks very funny with my tiny single monitor
iirc it's a 19" maybe?
I'm now mildly concerned about when I eventually swap the two side 22" 1080p with (I'm assuming heavier) 27" 1440p ones
I want a monitor arm because my desk is pretty small, but I have no idea if it'll clamp properly to the side of the desk since there isn't a lot of space
i have considered getting a second monitor and putting it vertically for coding space or w/e, but whenever i've had a second monitor i never really use it, so i don't bother (and i'm lazy)
I think my ideal would actually be a smaller second monitor
I'd just play a youtube video in it
I use however many monitors I have available that has never been a worry
I get annoyed with being down to just 2 monitors when I have to go into the office
(i actually have an old monitor in the computer graveyard that i could simply start using. but, lazy)
I would like
1 monitor
i feel like i'm living in a tiny box everytime i have to use a computer with a single monitor
My monitor can switch between being a single ultrawide or it can also function as two monitors side-by-side
Just one, because then I can put the laptop on the window sill or something and keep the desk less cluttered
It has multiple inputs, and when I enable PIP mode, my PC treats it as two monitors, which is convenient when I want to split my workspaces
Although, if I had and infinite scrollable tiling window manager, I'd bet that would work even better
My monitor can switch between being a single ultratall or it can also function as two monitors one above the other
2 is the bare minimum for me to do my job without me losing my mind
Is it this kind of situation?
I'm increasingly amused by the idea of having two of these funky vertical monstrosities
I have to tilt my head up to look see my server icons on discord
Neck workout
this is cursed
That channel selection!
gotta put a align-items: center on these things
crumble isn't sure what the server name is referring to and isn't looking to find out /lh
for code this seems wild
for discord it's great if I want to read back to messages from last year by looking at the top
Off topic only
oh yes
I've only got one monitor, but technically 4 screens on my desk. 6 if you count the stream decks as screens.
And my monitor is currently showing Windows on the left, and MacOS on the right
vertical ultrawide time
The arc would be insane, hover over my head
For the neck workout of course
You already go side to side
Time for up and down too
Yep
Still waiting for the first really parabolic monitor setup...
I need a second one that starts vertically above the horizontal one
Well yes of course
"doctor. My neck hurts lately"
So mine clamps fine over the metal bar, but I'm going to be doing something super simple soon. Literally just a small block of wood on each side of the bar to make it behave like one thicker desk.
Job done, will be even more stable!
Ooooo, clever!
finally got my emacs setup just how i like it https://i0.wp.com/boingboing.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/jd1c0014.jpg

I somehow only now realized this is a jab at me having all the non off topic channels hidden
smh
Offtopic Valley
how it was meant to be
vertical monitors give me too much power
mortals weren't meant to be able to see this much text
time to buy a 4k oled HDR monitor
Don't forget FreeSync if you're trying to check all the boxes
honestly at that pricepoint I feel like they include freesync as a lil extra bonus
both of these monitors are already freesync
hdr doesn't really work on linux very well yet but gotta have it anyway
get an HDR monitor only to then only consume SDR content
I mean that will often have the side effect of much better coverage of SDR colourspaces.
Makes perfect sense. It's like me having an RTX 4090, and playing Stardew Valley on it
one of the first games I played after upgrading my pc was oldschool runescape
I will say, a 49" monitor plays SDV very well. I'm able to see my entire farm at once.
"wow I can see the whole farm... where's the player though"
4K with minimum zoom in Stardew really is wonderful, though.
Apart from the small maps where you're letterboxed and pillarboxed to hell and back.
mortals weren't intended to have such power
<insert plug for my mod that lets you set a zoom level per map to avoid issues like that>
You're scaring the Vanillas
you can't scare me I don't play the game in general
I've now also put my other monitor vertically
the cabling is now a disaster sight
What if u just put 2 monitor horizontal but on top of each other
I've considered it in the past
this monitor arm isn't wide enough to put a monitor in between...
reject 16:9, return to 4:3
I'm a big 3:2 advocate now due to the framework
You got the better screen?
I did
Yeah, that screen's weirdly good.
I've always liked 16:10, but it's not much of a thing anymore since 1440p became available
a few days ago I had to work from just my work laptop for a few hours which is 16:9 and then right after I shut down that laptop I grabbed the framework and realized how nice it was to have that extra vertical space
the only thing with 16:9 is that it's awkward to read on
is this your setup
it is right now...
if it weren't completely impractical it would kinda be aesthetically nice to have a third vertical monitor right in between these 2 rn
like, you can't use the full width, because then the lines are too long and it's easy to get lost while reading, but if you make them narrower, then you have a ton of unused space on either side. You can do multiple columns, but then you can't do a continuous vertical feed, you have to do pages and it's just kind of awkward
I rarely read on my pc for that reason tbh
Trying out a tiling window manager on an ultrawide is fun, because it tries to fill the space, and a full-width browser is unbearable
yeah that's a major reason why I will never get an ultrawide monitor
A whole paragraph can be just a single long line across the screen
on niri you can set the default proportion a window should open at
so you can do half a monitor
it's the default in fact
Unfortunately GlazeWM only has workspaces which fill the screen
So however many windows occupies a percentage of the screen up to 100
ultrawides on a normal tiling window manager would definitely feel odd
I like how this request is like - I know you've got your own thing going on, but can you just be niri? https://github.com/glzr-io/glazewm/issues/1039
As a modder, I can relate. I've heard so many times "I love your mod, but can you just be this other mod"
it's interesting to look at monitors for sale and not see any TN panel ones?
And my response is always, I appreciate the support, but if you like the other mod then just use that one
Oh no, I'm losing a customer for the hobby I do for free /s
At least in the case of window managers, there really isn't a comparable option to niri for Microsoft Windows
I feel any attempt would fail horribly
... huh?
- Type of HDR: HDR10
- Color space: sRGB
seems like every other one has color space DCI-P3 or Adobe RGB (or both)
100% someone just forgot to put the right data in.
Sue them for that monitor. Seems like a just punishment.
Waiter, I ate all of my meal and it was awful, I demand a refund
Sometimes you just gotta aim for the moon and reach the stars /s
these vertical monitors are great for instantly scrolling past the 17 page introduction all the shitty review websites have
a use case for those 500fps games discussed earlier /lh
I see the general issue
you know it's bollocks when a review website puts an alienware monitor at the top
Review website, or paid shilling?
Just get a few G9s and have them all vertical.
My G9 has fewer pixels than 4k, not sure if that's still the case with newer models
I love how companies desperately try to market visual fidelity of a monitor to you as you watch it on a different screen
Still a bit short it seems.
It's like watching tech youtubers review speakers/headphones, and have you listen to the differences through your crappy speakers
I can smell that increased hertz through the screen
I'm glad all monitor manufacturers are in agreement that they should only use the worst names
Philips 32M2N8900/00
or you crash at terminal velocity causing basically guaranteed death
And among the stars is a terrible place to be!
Shoot for the moon. If you fail you'll blow up in the upper atmosphere tbh
Shoot for the moon. If you miss the moon's gonna crash into earth oh god we're all gonna die aaaa
And they all lived happily ever after. The End.
think of the bunny on the moon...
what psychopath sent a bunny to the moon
excuse you the moon bunny is a native, if endangered species
so if the point is not so save the bunny, why are we shooting for the moon?
uhh idk
the monitor situation is an unsolvable situation I've determined
Are you looking for future-tech, is that the problem?
I'm trying to figure out how to best orient 3 monitors but all configurations suck
stacking 2 horizontal monitors puts your line of sight directly between 2 monitors so you always gotta look either down or up so it sucks... Having 1 horizontal and 2 vertical just feels weird cause who needs 2 vertical monitors...
3 horizontal just takes too much space
I feel like there's really only one optimal solution, but that assumes you're able to purchase 3 monitors specifically for this purpose - center monitor is horizontally oriented, and left/right are the flaps
Like this
monitor flaps
I think in that case it works cause the vertical monitors aren't as tall as mine seems to be
There's this, but I kind of hate it
Yeah! That was the suggestion I had
This is awful
I also don't like this because what I would perceive as the primary requires your head to be tilted back
this works best conceptually but I'd either need a ridulously ginormous center monitor or smaller side monitors
Ridiculously ginormous center monitor sounds like a decent solution
what size are your current monitors
27 inch
27" 1440p?
Just get a HDTV, they have comparable specs to monitors nowadays
yeah
let's see
Here's your primary monitor
that means they have a 23.5" width
60 cm from what I measured
so a 23.5" monitor height would require a 48" monitor
Recommended viewing distance is about 6-8 feet away
.wolfram 60 cm in inches
23.62 inches
121.9 cm (centimeters)
122 cm monitor, done
we actually do monitor diagonals in inches for some reason
Everywhere seems to do screen dimensions in inches for some reason.
yes idk why we do that
everywhere else
Because the assembly line optimizes for areas with the most consumerism
there is a 43 inch monitor for sale so that's as close as I'm getting...
that's so huge though
no thats not big enough
you dont want margins on the side do you
That's also what she said
truly the peak of humor
the not big enough or the margins on the side?
As long as you can match up the vertical dimensions as closely as possible, it should work
I've seen pictures of triple-vertical monitors side-by-side, but that seems like the most wrong
it'd be the easiest but also horrible for most pc usecases
literally just get a TV instead
I take that back, the most wrong is bottom-right
agreed
I would judge that person
definitely
middle-left isn't horrible
middle right is also offensive to me
what fancy monitor arm even is that
Middle right is where you're just display family photos on it or something
I can barely even find 3 monitor monitor arms for sale
if i had to have 3 i'd do 2 horizontal middle and right and 1 vertical on the left
but that's just specific to how my desk is
I couldn't do a non-symmetric layout
this is the optimal configuration
I effectively have two since in PIP mode it functions as 2x27" but I kind of wish it had a triple setup built in
Because I'd like to keep the focus in the center
I swear neomounts is the only monitor arm company that exists
i do have my two setup as 1 in front of me and one kind of diagonal on my right
but again specific to how i sit like a deranged walrus
Just give up on monitors and buy into the VR space where windows are just floating all around you
for the true neck workout
The superior monitor
give up reality give in to bumping into walls
the camera is also wearing vr goggles
I wonder if I can make my Quest do that...

That was over a year ago, surely more progress has been made since then
or it has been abandoned
i am confused
Just stand up smh
it seems to be for driving wheel and pedals
and then sit back down when you want to look back at the lower monitor
Squats
Just get a sit-stand desk, but remain seated the entire time
Move the whole desk to accomodate your head position
Itās so uncomfortable to look up like that
I just need my desk to slouch with me
I was sitting on the floor in front of a desk for (long story short) laptop debugging
And it was horribly uncomfortable
Well there's your problem. You should've used a chair.
I'll try programming on a vertical monitor tomorrow before I look into this any further..
so the longer story is that I was trying to figure out why my laptop was broken-broken and hooking up an external monitor that I don't normally use
i was sort of panicky because well, laptop broken, and I had been using that area as my ironing station
so I would have had to clean up the ironing station from the floor to get the normal computer chair over there
because the computer chair currently lives in front of the sewing machine
so definitely should have used a chair... definitely did not
speaking of monitors, someone at my apartment has been throwing away several TVs this week, and one of them might have just made it home with me
Man, millennials, throwing out TVs
it's actually nuts how many I've seen
iirc my birth country does them in cm, but thatās probably bc nobody there even knows inches
I got my tv off the curb
It works just fine, it's just a bit cheap and has no smart features
(which is actually a plus imo)
i yearn for a television with no smart features
i guess that's just monitors though
i use my tv for my game consoles and for watching movies. big screen nice pixels
I moved into a dorm that didn't have a TV and just....stopped
i just wish it focused on doing its one job (receive pixels and display them) and stopped doing all the other bullshit (gestures broadly)
In a real sense, me playing stardew at all is an....extreme deviation of personality
Got it, ichor. Can I interest you in playing stardew on your fridge
An iPad and some duct tape can handle that for you
Heck, a Chromebook and some duct tape in a pinch
The folding bit might get inconvenient
Depends on how much clearance your fridge door leaves you
I reallllly want to do sock world championshipppppp
Please don't call me out like this.
(Though I'm sure being homeschooled from 6th through 12th grade didn't help either. Not that things were really any different in college. Also, maybe I would've discovered the idea of being transgender sooner though?)
The painfully-shy-ness (like, "avoid talking to anyone outside direct family and even when I had to as few words I could reasonably get away with (or sometimes a bit less)" level shyness) that seemingly started from the intense bullying in the half a semester of public school 6th grade probably didn't help either.
Also this is nonsense, the stars are much further away. If you miss the moon you'll end up floating in space for a while before falling back into earths gravity well and burning up in the atmosphere
...Should've finished backreading, this has already been discussed š
...I have a joke about a popular MMO, but even spoiling it but leaving only which game it is unspoiled would kinda be a spoiler š
Not gonna lie part of the reason I was interested in that headset "air conditioning" (I think it was just a fan) + being able to make your keyboard/mouse show in VR was specifically for this reason.
Even if the only thing I'd actually end up using it for would be my 2 day minecraft phases
To be fair the internet wasn't as big of a deal... though I'm still scared of big channels with tons of people (#making-mods-general doesn't count since I've been here since it was smol and encompassed all of modding, not just development), or just new communities in general no matter the size
Also, re:semi cursed monitor setup, may I present to you:
I didnāt use the tv much for actual computing because craning my neck.
Also just noticed I used a notebook as a mousepad back then š (the center of that desk was glass or something so I kinda had to have one)
Not pictured: the point in time where I had one of those switches where I pressed a button and it would swap my main monitor + mouse + keyboard to my laptop on the right table
Not gonna lie I still kinda like 4:3 as a resolution ratio
I have 4k monitors now which is nice in their own way since for most things I can just have a window on each half of the monitor
now i need to know
spoil it all
Game: ||FFXIV - specifically, the Endwalker expansion||
The joke: ||The answer to "what psychopath sent a bunny to the moon" is Hydaelyn||
Very spoilery details: ||Hydaelyn is introduced in the beginning of the game as basically the goddess of the world. But it turns she's actually one of the last beings of an ancient super powerful race who accidentally caused the apocalypse (other people of that race did, not her). She ends up creating the moon bunnies (Loporrits) to prepare to evacuate people in the future (ie. the timeframe the game takes place) to another planet in case the apocalypse happened again (because of a variety of plot reasons resulting in her even knowing to do this in the first purpose)||
(another member of the server who might know more context, spoiling because knowing who it is might give it away too considering they've talked about playing this game before š ) ||Khloe might know better on this, I only ever played the main story content and also had to refresh my knowledge on a fan wiki to explain the context||
thank you for also explaining the context
I do know way too much about that game's lore.
endwalker was such a beautiful experience but also it had some elements that were approaching silly
i've never had a game make me cry that much lmao
well... did that now
it really is nice for programming
and sucks for basically everything else
incredible
I am now faced with a decision...
Options:
- Do nothing, put the second monitor back in landspace and move on with my life
- Buy a fancy 4K monitor and try to make 3 monitors work though putting two on top of each other or something...
- Buy a fancy 4K monitor and replace the worst of the two existing monitors with it
I think my choice is gonna be the first
or
I guess I do have enough space to do 2 horizontal next to each other and then a vertical to the left

you forget "watching vertical tiktok videos in a crisp 4k"
ok never mind I did some rough measurements and I don't have the space for that
I'm going to need a new house first for this
have you tried being made of money
4K monitors do come shockingly cheap nowadays...
I want to buy a house, y'all know
And I'll likely be doing it alone so I need all my financial resources set towards that
I look longingly at the framework website
why did no one tell me buying a 4k monitor locks you out of buying a house?
Nah, responsible would be fixing my endless mental health issues lol
And then I remember I have no job and I close the website
I was looking at the desktop today
the least special offering they have
It's also compact and cute
it is cute
I really adore the look of the 12 but it also feels like a toy compared to my current laptop
for pc parts I don't like the replace them till they become unworkably slow
The 12 is the girlypop laptop of my dreams but without the girlypop specs I dream of
I'd be shocked if they don't come out with higher spec boards for the 12 at some point.
hopefully they wait till that job then
Just buy the 12 now, upgrade the board later, and turn the old board into a mini server! /j
But I have no idea if he's hiring rn
I mean
He is looking to expand
But he's waiting on some deals to go through and isn't yet a sponsor with the IND so

my monitors are back to normal and I am not in the mood to make the cabling nice again
...are there even any configurations with that many monitor hookups? (and they actually work)
I don't know I asked chatgpt to draw me a hedge fund trader and chatgpt wouldn't lie to me right
not intentionally no
svn info --xml
Well depending on DP version and monitor resolution, you can daisy chain 6 monitors together off of one DP port, so for a 3 DP port card you could do up to 18 monitors. So with 2 cards you could hit 36.
Or, if you have a Macbook pro, then DP daisy chaining doesn't work, because Apple
Why adhere to standards when you can force your customers to buy more products from you to make up for the missing functionality?
Would you say you're even coming around to liking it? /s
No
I've only dealt with SVN in a situation where all the projects were in a monorepo, so branching wasn't really an option. So it basically acted like remote-only Git with no branches. Ignoring things was a bit more of a pain than Git, and you occasionally had to run the "clean up" when it would get out of sorts.
Not having branches for projects with multiple people working on them is a bit of a pain, it turns out
Yeah. I purposefully did something last night that left broken versions of a bunch of files on my system
So it's been a Fun Bit of playing with svn to reset everything
(Cadence knowers-i ran 6.1.8, not 6.1.7)
For other reasons in a different repo I need to jump around between different revisions and I was like "hey, why don't u just add it to your prompt so you don't get confused"
Welp
This is trivial in git
New quote added by irocendar as #6364 (https://discordapp.com/channels/137344473976799233/1215712021207720006/1369750260800421938)
Not easy in svn
My understanding is that branching in SVN copies the entire repo (or something like that). When it was critical that we had a branch - such as for a long term project where we still needed to be able to make updates to the "main" branch - we'd make a copy of just the one project's codebase in a branches folder which lived alongside that project's trunk folder.
one of the only things i know about svn is its use of the word "trunk", which i wholly respect and appreciate
One of svn's only two good qualities (the other being that some version control is better than no version control)
If you install svn on a car computer they are legally required to store that repo on storage located in the trunk
It's still pre-alpha anyway
production ready is what I'm hearing
exactly
...hmm.
I've heard about that, seems promising
(also I admit I almost mistook it for Jai, another language written by a game dev, and was prepared to slander it)
i still have questions
can't believe you'd slander anything made by jonathan blow, our messiah
jonathan blow made his own programming language?
Jai!
I mean, I'm not sure that surprises me
he has been for the last 7 years yeah
every few months/years youtube tries to get me to watch a video for every opinion jonathan blow has ever held in his life
Beef looks like fun! I haven't had time to tinker with it but I'd like to, some day
It looks almost identical in style to C#, which pleases me.
It also appears to be Windows-only, which displeases me.
pretty sure when I came across it many years ago it more prominently marketed being like C#
ah .net framework is its inspiration then...

if you're vegetarian you can't use the beef language and if you're vegan you can't play games made with the engine

They periodically say (not just in DMs, even in the public channels on the server) that the only reason they joined the server was to glean what knowledge the modders have figured out for their own KAR-like game. š

The guy in the interview followed me on twitter because of the ecco text generator
