#programmers-off-topic

he's the kind of person who hides behind "I never said I have anything against the gays but you can't celebrate one group without celebrating every possible demographic group and also you are actually oppressing people who don't like them for religious reasons by supporting them" and then he gets very high-and-mighty and offended when the response is "okay? we're fine with oppressing those people"
he's also apparently a massive transphobe which is fun
the kinda "why is there a gay pride and not a straight pride" argument
I swear back then he was just a dorky linux guy almost entirely known for a little series "linux sucks" where he'd critique/nitpick stuff that still should improve in the ecosystem
exactly that but his reasoning was "how dare you celebrate one group (note that I'm not mentioning which one!) without also celebrating mother's day, father's day, [...], programmer's day" paraphrasing but that note is genuinely in there
also, in unrelated job search news: I see we have passed the "waaah the generation younger than me is horrible" torch to millenials
I love when people don't see the irony of these posts (courtesy of glassdoor)
I looked him up a few months ago wondering what he was doing after I had stopped watching him years prior and I did not know what I was getting myself into
I stopped watching him I got annoyed by his shilling of suse
pretty mild all things considered
I mean it meant you got to avoid whatever is going on with him now
which seems like a plus
it's happened twice now
channels I'd watching years ago becoming something like that...
oo who's the other one
the other one frankly was a category and far more "logical" of a progression. Basically channels of people who fell out of their faith and talked about their issues with it
so many of those channels are now some of the most toxic horrendous places you can visit
did they call themselves "skeptics" a lot
oh yeah some of them at least
yeah, I feel like we're probably even talking about some of the same people ngl
yup
recently I got a blast from the past when I saw a firefighter responding to someone saying "firefighters are overrated and shouldn't be paid" and it was one of the particularly bad ones from that group
ok I looked one of em up and I did find this funny to see as a video title considering the person in question
๐
...we're talking about the same guy
luckily I don't know the scenario you're referencing
but I have a good guess
I'm surprised how many of these people still make videos
I'm going through the ones I can think of and all of them still upload
I can find the respose vid but it doesn't include much of the original, it's like a ten sec snippet then the firefighter basically telling him to fuck off lmao
and they all seemingly went into the same direction
oh never mind we see growth
yeah, browsing through his recent vids he seems... less abrasive than he has been
which is a low bar if there ever was one
thankfully one of the first youtubers I watched is still uploading pretty much the exact same stuff with no controversy
(ethoslab)
oof never mind
that duo is dead in the water now
Etho has good stuff
Ah, etho slab. Ol' reliable
this is my first time hearing that name ngl
clearly you aren't into the correct minecraft youtube channels
I have played a total of five minutes of minecraft in my entire life
that'd do it
............wut?
Balatro is well known for being the most network intensive multiplayer game known to mankind
balatro uploading your gambling habits to every gacha game live as you play
I was gonna mention the one youtuber I've watched for ages being one of the few that hasn't gone down an evil arc (much like I did yesterday with Web and Sketch - thankfully, I've recovered, Evil Arc Syndrome is no joke), but you already beat me to it ๐
I miss the days when he had an upload every day, but I can appreciate him not getting burnt out too
Though the "one episode every month or so" that's going on lately is sad (not that he is under any obligation to put out videos, and I know he's said multiple times that he has Life Stuff โข๏ธ going on, but I still miss videos).
It's why the life series is so great, we actually get weekly uploads ๐
just to ruin our day etho will upload a video tomorrow called like "why women shouldn't be in tech" or something
If he does, it better be a clickbait title about how women shouldn't be stuffed into computers or something.
...but Etho doesn't do fancy thumbnails, much less clickbait...
It's fun following the whole "primitive technology and etho are the same person and always uploads around the same time" prophecies
I've fallen behind on Etho's videos but he's great
If I had the time I would go on a binge session to catch up
I think I'm behind
Amateurs
Who is etho
One of the original minecraft youtubers
Minecraft let's plays and other Minecraft videos. Hello, and welcome to my channel. I forget to edit this to say something even more original.

Oh, okay
Microsoft block game
I might still do it, just not with all the evil features
Well, he's been doing his videos since long before microsoft was involved, but yes ๐
I've also seen people call him "your favorite minecraft youtuber's favorite minecraft youtuber"
(Which begs the question, is Etho's favorite minecraft youtuber himself, seeing as he's my favorite minecraft youtuber? Or am I a minecraft youtuber and just don't know it yet?)
Look, casey, I'm tired
So fucking tired
What is Minecraft? I don't know. I don't care
Anyways
Quantum TiredPerson
Enjoy lunch!
Looks like the last etho video I didn't watch was around 4 years ago (and it was an among us video with hermitcraft people, so it's arguable that that counts)
I should go rewatch the project ozone 2 series or the sky factory 2.5 series some time
looks at my large amount of "anime/books to watch/read at some point" tabs already open ...maybe not
oh wow it's been a while, i used to love watching etho
have you tried having infinite time, energy and motivation
I used to watch Etho. I still do, but I used to too.
i haven't watch in a while, actually now that i think about it i haven't watched youtube in a while, besides falling asleep to things
You know, I haven't figured out a single one of those, much less all three
you need all 3 to figure out how to get all 3
Guess I'll need to find someone who already has all three so they can bestow it to me
But alas, I don't have the time, energy, or motivation to find that person
I'm on my fifth cup of coffee
That sounds bad
i've somehow ended up not drinking coffee
Must not have realized it's decaf, yet
I guess for some people using coffee to make up for not having infinite energy would work
It might be time for my evening coffee now we're talking about coffee...
Coffee ๐คข
i like coffee
I'm had a hojicha latte today!
i just don't... drink it
but only one
I've not sure I've ever had any type to be fair, but the smell doesn't seem like I'd like the flavor
And it smells better than it tastes!
Y'all certainly aren't helping the I-don't-want-to-try-coffee problem ๐
how have you never even tried it though
To be honest it'd probably be a good idea to at least try (caffeinated) given the whole ADHD thing
Last I check there's no nationally-mandated coffee tasting at age 18 or anything like that
i feel like i first tried coffee as a child
I don't want to get too deep into artisan vs mainstream coffee stuff, but there's plenty of coffee from the grocery store or even big coffee store chains that I wouldn't blame anyone for disliking
However, I have tasted wine (of some sort) before for that sort of reason (yay church communion, I guess?)
(No I don't like wine either)
(And not really interseted in any sort of alcohol because of the mental effects to be fair)
(Communion wine was very tiny servings - still confused as to why middle schoolers are allowed to do that, legally)
And you're still wanted by Douwe Egberts to this day.
Like, if you try to drink some Folgers black (without any cream or sugar or anything), then yeah, you're not going to like coffee.
If you have a mediocre coffee from a half-decent roaster, though, you'd prefer to drink it black
The serving sizes were like this, except the cups were a bit shorter and also not as full:
faith or something idk
Never really liked how it made my stomach warm
i don't like red wine because of the tannins
experimentally this has never happened to me
every so often i try black coffee (sometimes even very "nice" coffee) and after the first sip I'm like no and add milk and sugar
I suspect I am particularly sensitive to bitter tastes, because I also disliked lettuce growing up and everyone else insisted it wasn't bitter
Maybe I'd like it if I added a bunch of stuff like that?
But at that point, why not just drink something inherently tasty, like choccy milk or appy juice
i like things that have a lot of flavor, and things that are bitter and sweet
sensitive to bitter gang
I've never heard of lettuce being bitter
I dislike bitter things for sure. Dark chocolate? No thank you!
like it's a nice mix of flavors when something is both bitter and sweet, like dark chocolate or licorice or lattes
rocket is arugula, no?
that was the absolutely bane of my existence as a child
am also not a fan of bitter
when i said lettuce i meant like normal iceberg lettuce
lettuce can be bitter if heated or poorly grown
it's all bitter to me, i've just gotten a bit more tolerant of bitter as an adult
Ok, so yes, it's still an acquired taste, but difference in bitterness and other off-putting flavors is night and day. I'd recommend a splash of cream and then over time you might find that you need the cream less and less. You can also try light or medium-light roasts which have much less "roasty" flavor (often conflated with bitterness)
I like things with a lot of flavor, but the flavor has to be one of a specific set (ie. not a bitter like flavor, not a spicy like flavor, etc.).
And of course texture is very important. Please don't make me eat onions, I will be unable to get them down and it will be your fault when there is a mess on the floor
i have tried cutting down but it has not reached the end point
aragula is still something I cannot understand anyone out there enjoys
I have no clue what this is. Is SpaceX edible????
i have begrudgingly accepted arugula can be nice in some sandwiches
when appropriately balanced
it has a bit of a peppery taste
I don't know what arugula is but google shows it being a green leafy thing so I don't like it (I wish I could say /s )
i find it surprisingly mild in taste (also don't eat green leafy things)
i thought it was going to be extremely offensive but it was meh
I think the general rule for anything lettuce-y is to avoid cooking it
. s/cooking/eating
That must be the one lettuce-type leaf that ruins my salads
(I didn't know you could still use the s/before/after syntax in discord to edit your previous post, I had to type that three times)
idk why aragula/rocket is so often in salads
are there people out there who enjoy salads more with that shit in there
my mom likes arugula
i think some of the other leaves are worse tbh
I assume it's a misguided attempt to provide visual variety
there's some purple ones that are bad imo
i agree
Imagine actually eating lettuce
I think the purple ones are the ones I usually hate the most
iceberg lettuce is fine I don't mind it
(Somebody please harmony patch my brain to at least be able to tolerate healthy foods)
iceberg lettuce is just crunchy water
I meant to say salad
Since the topic was salad, not lettuce specifically
I typically just have spinach salads though. Must more substantial and the leaves last longer in the fridge. And no nonsense leaves get mixed in with it
i'm the opossite, i will eat some vegetables uncooked but basically none cooked
apparently the red stuff is called radicchio
("But compost is used to grow more vegetables!" You fool, it can be used for grain or apple trees too!)
(Said apple trees are designed only for apple juice)
raddichio isn't the red stuff i was thinking of, but i do vaguely recall it being offensively bitter
Last time I tried an actual apple I didn't like it but to be fair, I now know there are a bajillion different types of apples
apple juice is just sugar water
Shoutout to https://applerankings.com/ for educating me on this matter
The industry-standard, definitive, inarguable guide to ranking and reviewing munching apples. Curated by comedian Brian Frange.
one thing I've always found astounding is people who like oven baked veggies cause at least all the ones I've tried have all been awful
Oh, that's one of my favourite websites.
idk what apples my job gets but they're shit
apple cider at least has something to it, though it's still not great for you
you're just healthy i'm not talking to you anymore
huhhhh that's my default method
mostly because it's so easy
just plop them on a tray with a little oil and salt and wait 20 min
I thought you had no bitter tolerance
It's a shame apple juice has literally three times the amount of carbs as chocolate milk (at least the chocolate milk and apple juice I most recently got, but the apple juice I got didn't have added sugar)
what vegetables do you bake
ovens don't make things bitter, do they?
like baked potatoes? what do you mean
onions, mushrooms, parsnips, sweet potatoes, green beans, brussels sprouts
squash, potatoes
fire in general does because of smoke
Parsnips aren't real! They're a crop made up by stardew valley!
(Source: I never heard of them before SDV)
and i take them out when they're brown, not burnt
You can cook most veggies in tons of ways and they shouldn't really come out too differently
in my mind sweet potatoes/potatoes aren't vegetables but that's funky dutch culture speaking
what a novel idea
too much oven does make things bitter but brown stuff is usually just flavorful
potatoes are dubiously vegetable
The only good potatos are chips
oh i also wanted to do cabbage at some point but my parents visited and stir-fried it instead
they are tasty in all forms so clearly not vegetables
i like potatoes roasted, then smashed, then roasted again for the crispy brown bits
(I guess I'll concede for Taco Bell's probably-unhealthy nacho fries, if they're fresh)
I cook most veggies in steam bags in the microwave so I'm not heating up the whole house with the oven
that sounds horrible
you have a very inefficient oven if it heats up the whole house
I can only eat the thinner/crispy fries, preferably seasoned beyond just salt (and not so 'crispy' that they're like, hard)
idk in the summer it does make a big difference
i like the smashy bits on the inside of fries, but i grew up on in n out
steaming them in the microwave is very different from just microwaving them
I guess I haven't had oven baked veggies a lot cause all my previous experiences were bad... onions are much better eaten caramellized tho
My apartment heats up all on its own at the moment. (I'm so tired of sweating so much every night in bed, somebody please call my apartment building and force them to switch to cooling instead of heating already)
i'll happily eat frozen peas and corn microwaved
i believe you, steaming vegetable still sound horrible to me
ah, gotcha
that's the fun part, if you get the timing right in the oven it gets brown and tasty without having to stand there stirring for ages
though it's not quite the same
bc it tends to dry out as well
I'm a big caramellized onion enjoyer
my mom always made me do it cause she gets impatient and burns it
me too, but im way too lazy to make them most of the time
brussel sprouts I've always boiled
I frankly barely know what a parsnip is
it's a "pastinaak" in dutch which I think I have seen before somewhere
oh my god the dutch word actually made me realize what it is in my language
green beans and broccoli are peak veggies
it's "pastarnac" in romanian
glad I helped
boiled brussels sprouts sounds terrible to me, ngl
I like it quite a bit
i mostly know the weird veggies because we had a community supported agriculture box growing up
how do you make sure they don't get too mushy?
the oven seems to tend to make their flavors stronger and I don't actually like the flavor of most vegetables
oh hmmm
i guess boiling might help with that
i like the flavors of most vegetables fine
i like them better with browned bits
they don't need more than a few minutes
they do get a little mushy tho
I was cursed with liking everything unhealthy and not being a fan of most healthy things
very jealous of a friend of mine who drools at the idea of fuckin bok choy of all things
i do like bok choy, though it's not my top favorite
Hey, don't call me out like that
I can eat bok choy but I don't enjoy eating it
same
my dad really likes fennel and conveniently forgets no one else in the family does so when we visit he will sometimes serve some cursed fennel burger thing he loves
now i need to google what exactly fennel is
it's like they turned bagpipes into a vegetable
never seen that vegetable before
what does it taste like
shit
yes i googled it
idk how to describe the flavor of fennel... It's like anise if you know that
I seem to recall fennel being terrible
now imagine someone just cutting out a horizontal slice from the white part of the fennel and uses it to replace a burger patty
And onions are fine and I like them better anyways
(Note the budget is me being mean to me, I make more than enough money, I just like having a very high savings rate)

my go to veggies to feel healthy are broccoli, green beans, brussel sprouts and baby spinach
or just a salad
iceberg lettuce with some random shit
smoked chicken is great but it really lowers the "to feel healthy" rating
tomatoes are good...
cucumbers are inoffensive
eggplants are a satan spawn born out of spite for my wellbeing
I'm ok with fennel but it's not something i like enough to seek out
i like green cabbage a lot
and mushrooms (these feel more like a splurge)
i'm a little picky about mushrooms and i specifically like shiitake
not those white/brown button mushrooms
Tbh there are very few veggies I dislike
I actually can't think of one
I primarily eat purple cabbage, kale, etc
Mushrooms good too
I try to eat little meat so mushrooms help fill the gap
I found out I can do a fall crop of purple cauliflower
So that is on my todo list
I'm in love with growing the purple things lately
So pretty
Any purple carrots?
We are in clay soil so no carrots ๐ฆ
I've had heirloom carrots; they're delicious. Well, besides the white ones
Awww unfortunate. I guess also no parsnips then?
Yeah we had them alongside parsnips and we had a hard time telling the difference. The white ones were much harder and fibrous and had much less flavor than the orange, yellow, and purple ones.
Brussel sprouts are in the running for my favorite veggie, when cooked correctly.
I see a post on r/Kirby on my reddit feed:
"Nintendo today just released the full opening cutscene for"
๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐
"the forgotten land DLC"
๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐
(It's fine, looks neat, but THAT'S NOT WHAT I WANT RIGHT NOW)
Will somebody please convince Nintendo to think of the poor KAR enthusiasts? They gave us just enough to spark hope being realistic, give us something substantial!
metroid prime fans were teased for nearly a decade
Monkey paw curls. Nintendo thinks about KAR. Decides to set its retail price to $90 also.
And KAR has been basically ignored since 2003, and been given very short lived false hope in forms such as the first 20 seconds of this video (note: when it was originally shown during the Rosalina smash bros reveal, the beginning of the video didn't have the smash logo intro thing). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwDt8Y2rwhI
What's your point?
Rosaline is the 19th character announced for the next installment of Super Smash Bros.
Also metroid prime 4 has had actual gameplay shown recently
I'd still get it.
yeah metroid prime 4 is actually releasing soon
It was pretty funny how the KARers trailer baited people into thinking Smash at first.
Honestly, that doesn't feel like a monkey paw so much as a totally expected thing given current trends
it's ok... I live by the random confirmations that nintendo does in fact know they own the golden sun franchise
Yeah that was pretty funny. Revenge for that rosalina reveal I guess
I wonder what my reaction would've been if I saw it live. I didn't see it live since I was just gonna watch the direct later, woke up to this sequence of messages from my brother:
(I had also previously gotten some @ everyone ping from the KAR netplay/modding server but I didn't read it and just saw the phone notification, and assumed it was a late april fools joke or something)
And KAR is this year, again, what's your point? ๐
Controversial opinion: Kirby platformers are significantly more fun than Mario ones.
*slips into the shadows*
You know, I don't know anything about the golden sun franchise

I mean....
neither does nintendo
the only thing the studio behind it churns out are mario tennis and mario golf games
but the fact that the studio still exists gives me false hope
Well google says golden sun is from 2001, so only two years older than KAR. So maybe there's still hope?
No parsnips
What makes me sadder is no daikon
But then again there are technically KAR references in smash (the dragoon pieces, and arguably Smash Run from the 3ds, as well as clearly KAR inspired menus and checklist for Smash Bros Brawl)
we got a golden sun game for the DS that was bad and it had a fuckin cliffhanger ending on top of that
there are also golden sun references in smash
I've played none of those
I feel like you would enjoy Kirby ones more...
Huh, did not know that.
Kid icarus was forgotten for a while too, maybe there's hope? (1991 GB game to 2012 3DS game)
That was also sakurai, wasn't it? Maybe Sakurai is the one to hope for reviving long forgotten nintendo games
See, even more similarities!
As long as you don't get as rabid as silksong fans you'll be fine. (And even then, they got an update in the direct too...)
I've played Kirby & The Amazing Mirror due to aquo and that's it
it's ok I'm also a silksong fan
It's been ages since I played amazing mirror, that was fun
It took me at least three attempts to get into Hollow Knight for some reason, and I don't know why. But that last actual attempt, I game... binged through that thing.
That was the one where you got all the kirby color spraypaints right?
yes
Hollow Knight? Yes.
I've never played hollow knight. As mentioned previously not a huge fan of platformers just don't look at my spelunky 1/2 and terraria playtime
SILKSONG MENTIONED
WHAT THE FUCK IS A SHAW
Wow, it doesn't show my hours because I'm on Linux? That's rude.
you can turn on forcing proton compatibility for all games and I think it shows your hours then
It's actually shawl, because you're going to be knitting one. /j
Get back to your containment zone in r/Silksong you animal /s
Do u have to switch to proton
I had to resist my urge to try and preorder last night (I assume that's what you're asking) due to finances ๐
But it's okay, the only switch 2 launch exclusive that looks interesting is the new mario kart
Also, looking up amazing mirror, I discovered there are actually two kirby wikis. Fandom, and WiKirby (which is obviously superior because of the pun, and also not being Fandom)
Amazing mirror only had 14 spray paints? Can my childhood memory not be trusted??? (My childhood memory says there were multiple pages of them)
I wish nintendo didn't hate fan games, I would love to make a kirby game (even a non-KAR one).
good chance that the fandom wiki is the original one, and the non-fandom one is made by the original creators of the fandom wiki after fandom enshittified itself
(you're not allowed to delete fandom wikis or even point people to the new one, fandom will just find new management)
Yeah, fandom is definitely not great. Hence why WiKirby is superior even without the pun name
escaping the grasp of fandom is always a positive
Now I'm imagining an idealized kirby fan game... sigh...
The trick would be to make one, and just never release it anywhere.
just make it an absurdly elaborate romhack like people do with pokemon where it's essentially unrecognizable as the original game
I guess I could if there are any decomp projects, but I don't wanna do that in assembly
Also then I would be limited by the technology of the time limitations in the emulators like amount of RAM
Only very handsome and cool people would make a Pokemon romhack
That wording makes me suspicious that you have made a pokemon romhack
Reading the wiki page on Kirby GCN, I wonder what this version of it would've been like to play. Supposedly it was pretty challenging.
Knitting?
atra summoned
What he didnt say is that everyone i made play it hated it
Tbf it was a bad first pick in hindsight, Nightmare in Dreamland wouldve been better
I was I think the only one that beat it and enjoyed it
thats just because you have good taste
๐
Tbh the one thing I don't like about discord is that you have ro to create a tiny server to get announcements
Signed: keeps missing when my favorite (only) PowerPoint streamer goes live
is powerpoint streaming just livestreamed classes?
that sounds a lot like what i do in class minus the livestreaming
Yup!
I enjoy this genre of twitch
If you decided to livestream classes I would watch
Probably a privacy violation (for my students) but otherwise that would be amusing
Just only stream your powerpoint window, and use a voice changer on any voices that aren't yours
depending on student age, if they knew, they could make use of it to do say some dumb shit you wouldn't want on the stream
(He actually streams the lecture without students there)
yeah, streaming without students makes more sense
students interact with lectures in stone universities?
Iโve only got 9 students in one of my classes
So they canโt hide when I call on people
this triggered my anxiety
How are they supposed to sleep through class and absorb the knowledge just by having been present?
-# This doesn't work, believe me, I tried
so clearly being there is pointless, should just sleep at home
Don't bring logic into this
I tried the sleeping at home and not going to class method and it wasn't beneficial to my academic performance
At they can say they went to class, even though they might as well not have
i never went to classes in uni after the first year, i did go to some labs and seminars but the actual course part i never went
The real problem is that in my easier classes I didn't need to pay attention/be awake and I still managed through the classes, so I learned that was a perfectly servicable approach
I took 4.5 years to finish a 3 year degree through the power of negligence and never showing up
i could never pay attention when there was 1 teached talking at a huge room full of like 200 students
My class sometimes involves cutting metal in class, so itโs not optional
They canโt really review that at home
try me
yeah those were like in labs and seminars
I would be paying 2000% more attention if I could be working on things with my hands in class
I didn't go to anything I just slept and chatted on discord and then opened the uploaded slides the day before midterms
not my best years
i also did exactly that
I actually just stare at them until one of them volunteers, if that makes you feel better
no it does not, it makes it worse, thanks
Guess why I knit
for most things there wasn't even a midterm just the final exam, there's always a month of like exams/final projects at the end of the semester and that's when i always went in panic mode and did everything i needed to do the entire semester for all subjects at once
by some miracle i managed to not have to repeat any years
oh it's a class not a lecture
for us lectures meant stfu and write things down
then again I stopped going to lectures in year 1 lmao
ah that's the distinction, we would call those seminars for some reason
we had lectures and then classes/seminars were pretty much the same thing
and tutorials are similar but smaller
those were labs for us
we also had labs for CS courses but they were pretty big
labs were always small for me
how small?
like 10-15 people
idk what we called anything
seminars were like 30-35
tutorials were 2-6 people usually except for in a couple courses where they didn't manage to sort a proper size out so they did a 10 person tute
classes and seminars were anything from 10 to 30 people
and lectures were literally all 200-300 students in that year
yup
I believe in the cold call
Whooo
hoorcollege (lectures I guess?) was like 2 hours and idk what we called other things
2 hour lectures sound miserable
ours were 50 minutes if they were in the maths institute and 1 hour in the CS department
our were 3-4h ๐
My 2 hour classes which sometimes have lecture for most of it have to have something to break up that time
Sometimes itโs cutting metal, sometimes doing problems
is cutting metal literal or a saying I don't recognise
it's hard to tell with engineers
No its literal
This is a class about metal
I also made them touch metal in some of the early classes
see I thought it could go either way lmao
Using their built in heat flux detectors
...hopefully not for the first time in their lives?
Probably not! But maybe the first time they paid close attention to how cold it felt
that's so weird to me
but then again I was always the one autistic kid who asked too many questions about everything
make them touch grass from time to time too
illegal, they're stem students
They can care about grass in biology
create metal grass
the only stem people allowed to touch grass are biomedics/medics
they have social lives and go outside and stuff. gross
I shared a bathroom with a medicine student in my first year. It was basically like having my own bathroom because we were never awake in the same hours
You would like sharing a bathroom with me i suspect
(I'm ~never home and have a gym membership)
atra you're like who my mom wants me to be
the gym membership is the easy part
also I'd have easy access to steal all your yarn
iro is a cat confirmed
Hey
๐ชบ
ooo this is cool
I'm going to assume you'll get it next Tuesday then, based on my own shipping experience. With most of that time leaving the laptop sitting in one place somewhere.
I don't know why but Framework shipped mine with "weekday delivery only" but not signature required.
their estimate is Wednesday
this is the first time in my life I've had a delivery from FedEx
I was barely aware they did delivery in my country
FedEx is my least favorite shipping company. I hope they do well for you.
Good luck with that, FedEx is the worst shipping company I've dealt with
Really?
Last Christmas the local FedEx sorting center was literally tens of thousands of packages behind schedule. Right when I needed fast shipping of replacement PC parts. That was so fun.
I've never had a problem with FedEx
That being said, the last package I got they redelivered twice and even called me after the first two failures (due to requiring a signature) to see if I was going to be available for the third
It might just come down to the company/person they've subcontracted out to in your area
FedEx, at least around where I live, doesn't have a union and conditions for their employees are not good.
At my old place they'd not even try once and just tell me to pick it up at their distribution center
I try to get things shipped via UPS when I can just based on them having a union and hearing so much better things from the drivers.
UPS is pretty good, and I've had family work their entire lives there
But also UPS actually delivers all my stuff on time, so that's appreciated too, lol
I've had issues with them leaving a notice that I didn't answer during a time when I was home and waiting for the package. They just immediately said they could not deliver without ever bothering to knock on my door.
Yeah they did that at my old place multiple times
I guess they expected met to be waiting for them at the door before they arrived
our deliveries are mostly dominated by PostNL and DHL. DHL kinda sucks
Whenever someone tries shipping me something via DHL, it gets handed off to USPS for the final delivery
I think DHL in the US is only an intermediary now and has USPS do their last mile anymore
interesting
They used to do last mile back in the day
I pray this happens here so I don't have to deal with DHL claiming I'm not home when I am anymore
You pray that the united states postal service delivers your mail?
I pray that they start a banking service tbh
ok no the dutch postal service in my case... (postnl)
The FedEx tracking for my laptop. It actually really annoyed me at the time
It took like 26 hours to make it all the way from Taiwan to Flint, MI (the local sort facility they use for me).
Then it took 49 hours to travel an additional 52 miles within Michigan. And then, despite arriving at the local facility early enough to make the truck, they didn't load it for delivery and just left it sitting there another 24 hours.
I realize a flight is going to be faster than not-a-flight, but I absolutely could've gotten it a day earlier at least.
I fully expect mine to get stuck at customs for a while
I was shocked mine didn't.
But I guess it's that government efficiency from firing everyone. No one left to say "Hey you gotta leave that here for us to check it" /s
my package's journey so far
it's been in 3 countries so far
but supposedly in transit right now to the netherlands
considering i live like a 1 hour drive from where they arrive you'd think it'd arrive before wednesday
You'd think they'd be slowest in Flint
Clearly you didn't do it right.
You just need to astrally projection to the classroom while you're sleeping, or something.
Also after I saw the college procrastination talk earlier I wanted to link the procrastination presentation on Dropout's Smartypants (S2E1), but alas, the episode is paywalled

Hey, it's against the rules to use that many big words in a sentence outside of scientific papers that most people won't understand anyways.
does that mean fantasy writers are fugitives
The rules only apply to people of this world. Fantasy writers are all writing stories about the world they came from before being here, so they're exempt.
Also I'm not sure how much fantasy I've read that uses Lots of Big Wordsโข๏ธ, besides when I read The Last Phycisist recently
Bad news for Web and Sketch fans: Godot 4 apparently still doesn't support C# when doing web export. ๐ Nobody would take it seriously if I made it in GDscript, and as you all know Web and Sketch is an extremely ambitious project aiming to take over as a communications platform worldwide. The long-term scope and totally not just the evil route options would be impractical to do with GDscript unfortunately.
time to learn javascript, I think
Whatever will we do when discord explodes???
go outside and talk to people in person

steal their yarn!
I'm stealing yours
Iโm pretty sure I still end up being the one profiting if we both steal each otherโs yarn
Really everyone would profit if you stole my yarn, because itโs just sitting here
preposterous! https://pyscript.net/
It has come to my attention that I lied that other day, and that I only have 64 GB RAM. ๐
Check the customs website for exceptions, iirc the threshold is higher for electronics
the package is currently in India...
brings the country count up to 4
idk customs stuff. All I know is that my keyboard got held up there and that's a fraction of the price of this laptop
Ah
Well that's unfortunate
there's also flask, which I equally refuse to acknowledge
flask is backendw though
ngl I wasnโt sure if we were talking about backend or frontend and (and donโt let wren overhear this) I also refuse to acknowledge frontend exists
do you just use the internet through curl
canโt I just be a hypocrite
I think frontend implies gui, not just any interface

I suppose even a backend api would be frontend if you included any kind of interface
a tui for photoshop
would honestly slap
would be a bizarre user experience
the user experience I dream of every time I use a graphics program
just let me do things consistently via text
very well. a photoshop LLM bot coming your way
this is why half the time I give up and make myself a base version in desmos
because I prefer writing my own 3d wireframe viewer in desmos than dealing with perspective in procreate or photoshop
what kinda arcane shit are you doing in any of these 3 programs
desmos is for drawing graphs right...
3D wireframes in photoshop or procreate??
so many questions
you just want openscad
yeah
and it honestly isn't that difficult to turn a 2d graphing calculator into a 3d one
and from there you can build what you want
and then screenshot
and trace in procreate
Iro have you considered just installing blender
no
next question
if my desmos account wasn't my irl name I would have shared some of what I made
How about writing a fbx by hand
โฆI feel like a vector art program makes way more sense than a literal graphing calculator.
(Sure, that would go against what you said about text based vs not, but I am truly Baffled โข๏ธ )
wtf
you guys have no appreciation for art
I am appreciating it
I have at some point edited svgs but I did do it directly

well, ipad
It doesn't work very well at my screen size but i appreciate the effort
That just makes it worse
Has anyone tried this
I'm not organized enough for this
Same
In theory, this looks great...
In practice, I think it would be worse for me than not using it.
Installed it to have a look, aaaannnnd I'm instantly out for the principle of it. No end-to-end encryption unless you pay, so no thank you!
Yeah, I'm considering buying lifetime taskito but one thing I don't like about taskito is the lack of a desktop interface
Okay. Payment is lifetime so I'm fine with that
It's not even that I'm against a cheap subscription type deal, but more that... don't charge for such a basic, baseline feature that you already had to make, you know?
Fair!
I'm fairly against the idea of having subscriptions but don't mind the idea of paying for software
Dh, what do you use currently?
Oh my god I logged into my workflowy and there are undone tasks from 2015
I don't have an official diagnosis of adhd but I have a graveyard of planners and planning apps does that help
I actually don't think anyone I know with adhd that maintains planners
Yeah, I don't have a diagnosis (though everyone I've talked to, even doctors, is effectively 100% certain about it) of it, but... I use nothing, because they don't work!
honestly really I don't know many people that maintain planners in general
unless a google calendar with meetings and birthdays already counts
Right now I'm in a situation where I'm primarily using a paper and pen situation
Followed by Google calendar for appointment
Followd by Microsoft calender for work appointments
Followed by an actual random onenote page for work items
not bad
my sister did do journaling for several months I think and it seemed to help her
This is chaos. It works only because I have an insanely good memory and even then I paid my damn taxes with only two days to go
I haven't replaced my car battery and that has been a todo item for six fucking months
ah well relatable
I'm an expert at procrastinating anything that doesn't have immediate consequences
I'm already going through a major change right now where I do my laundry as I build up dirty laundry instead of doing laundry when I run out of things that are clean
Wait you're supposed to ....

I understand
I'm still going through this change
I'm trying
hmm
apparently pewdiepie is an arch linux user the hyprland window manager
that was not on my bingo card but ok
Now the question is: can I work slack into the system
Does the "list of things I've been super interested in doing before moving onto another thing, just in the past week" that has 10 entries that I sent a friend recently count?
stuffs my "fiction to consume" backlog (which consists of way too many browser tabs) under a couch
Ugh, why can't I have a planner that trivially supports "on the first Saturday of the month"
I literally don't know how big said backlog is because I haven't bothered putting it onto it's own window to have the tab counter useful for it
But it's dozens, at minimum
Video games, books, and anime
I think a few manga too
My calendar app supports that, not sure if it's on android
My default Google app supports that but it doesn't support unbound tasks that don't have a timeslot
Vs the new app I'm trying out
Which has the all important unbound tasks
It also has some options I hadn't noticed before, like the Xth weekday or weekend of the month
So, willing to share the new interests?
ooh proton has quite fancy repeating calendar things
I want dates relative to the last full moon
somehow in my want to create a spreadsheet with all my modded crops and trees i have started learning python i guess
It looks like the Shortcuts app on iOS can do this with a little fiddling - it has some sort of scripting and it looks like you could have a shortcut that triggers every saturday, and then check if it's one of the first seven days of the month.
Can't recall if you're iOS or Android though
(Obviously you'd fill it with 01, 02, etc. I was lazy.
I also set the format for the checked date to dd)
it's so cool actually and much more simple than I thought but obviously I'm relying on Google and stuff a lot LOL... didn't know exporting data from a bunch of crops.json files would be so difficult, full of errors
This is the message I sent (plus a few minutes later I had realized I forgot to put the potential kirby fangame on the list).
This was two days ago. Yesterday there was also some VR interest, since I discovered that there's:
- Software that lets you put specific regions as passthrough, so I could see my keyboard/mouse all the time (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1844610/Reality_Mixer__Mixed_Reality_for_VR_headsets/), or software that lets you put a keyboard/mouse model as an overlay and also your hands, so you can see them at all times (not sure how well it'd work especially with mouse because of it moving though, without adding somrt sort of tracking thing to it) (https://store.steampowered.com/app/2532240/Infuse_VR/)
- Things like this, which is amazing since my main problem with VR even seated is my sweatiness + lenses fogging up from that. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CSY8PD63

For the second software listed in number 1, I imagine I could do some sort of marker on the mouse/keyboard and use computer vision to find it for positioning? Like this sort of thing (random image from google images)
But I imagine for that route I'd have to code my own app... but it being possible is intriguing
The mouse one would likely be blocked if my hand was covering it, but like, at that point I don't need to find it since my mouse is likely in my hand
Hey but you're sticking with it and learning something and that's great!
is it a subscription? because in that case, what happens if the subscription runs out?
I tried a physical bullet journal, todoist, and Giving Upโข๏ธ
Meme from the theoretical future of Nintendo releasing KAR amiibos
(Yes I'm KAR brainrotting again, why do you ask?)
also, the real million dollar ADHD question is actually
have you ever said that caffeine (/ any other stimulant) makes you sleepy /hj
"twitter from the future"
Yeah, in the future someone is gonna steal Twitter and restore the branding

But that's not as significant as KAR amiibos
Yes, actually
who is your favorite kirby character besides kirby
It is technically a subscription yes but
I'm not sure I've ever had any substantial amount of caffeine so I'm not sure for me. My soda of choice was sprite, and I don't like coffee
Blue kirby
(1) they don't use their servers, they actually just use your Google drive
(2) they offer lifetime
meta knight, obviously
hmm, if they don't use their servers then I'm a bit confused about the end to the encryption
but I'm still confused about what happens when a subscription runs out. If it's encrypted correctly they can't exactly just decrypt it until you give them the password again
Meta Knight is a solid choice, but I have too much trauma from that being my older brother's preferred character in super smash bros brawl (note: we did not pay attention to the competitive scene or tier lists, and he discovered him before that really took off anyways)
And we got Brawl day 1
And by day 1, I mean while my dad and that brother went to church, my mom and twin brother and I skipped and went to Target to pick up a launch copy.
when they announced him for brawl i lost my mind. then the game came out and i became very sad when nobody would let me play him cause he was busted good
(Though we waited for older brother to get back to play)
I'm pretty sure we unlocked all the characters and stuff through the playtime requirements without even touching subspace emissary for unlocking things ๐
(it was also sad that he was so top tier but also kind of not my style to play. the release of brawl was a sad time for me)
Clearly you just needed to install an overhaul mod. /s
(I know people swear by Project M but I much prefer the chaos that is Brawl Minus.)
so. atra. how's the brioche knitting going
Tbh if someone looks at my todo list it's all boring
...knitting... bread?
if they're going to say things we can't understand we should do it back to them
Did we invent bread yarn
Took a break from the brioche to knit a pile of hats!
I have contemplated trying to knit a bread or cake dough tbh
That gives me big "3d printing with chocolate" energy
counterpoint: I have literally never baked bread and don't intend to start now
Alas, I just ordered dominos yesterday ๐ (yes, there was cheesy bread, no, I don't still have any).
tbh I don't love the dominos cheesy bread
How does knitting bread work. Do you knit bread after being baked, or do you knit the dough and then bake it
I feel like both would have problems without specially designed for knitting bread dough
Okay! The atra school for bread baking starts tomorrow
I assume you would do it before baking, like a challah
Except it doesnt
Because I have work
And it's fucking summer in Texas
So we aren't turning on the fucking oven until October
obviously you can't use needles and knit the normal way so you'd be better off finger knitting
I don't know what that is but I'll take your word for it
Jewish bread, it's braided
Fun fact I actually braid normal bread dough too
To be honest you could take out "summer in" and you'd still have my sympathy
ironically it's actually similar to a brioche so we've gone full circle
Bread hat? Bread sweater?? Bread socks???
It's brioche's Jewish cousin tbh
Oh, that sort of bread knitting
Next door is pannettone
That's boring and not what I wanted to imagine
The posh, more successful cousin
unfortunately, Casey, actual brioche knitting will bore you much more than this
Actually knitting will likely either bore you
If I were okay with AI imagery I'd go make some images to show what I mean
Or be the solution to paying attention in lecture
Given my ADHD brain speed lately, I concur
Meanwhile, the futures market
Oh, are you doing research for that mod? /s
I'm suddenly remembering one of my comp sci classes, where I saw a person in the row in front of me playing Dwarf Fortress (pre-graphical steam release days)
Tell me about Minecraft magic mods
Well, I'm not gonna explain the idea I mentioned earlier because like I said it's way too big of an idea ๐
Or Minecraft computer mod
behold: brioche knitting
Existing ones tend to range from "tech with magic flavor" to "actually feeling like magic"
I like "magic with tech flavour" vibes in stories. like people systematically studying magic
One of the OG magic mods, Thaumcraft, has had so many versions, but hasn't been up to date for a while. One of the modding teams supposedly got permission from the original dev to do a redesign/remake for a new version, but nobody knows when that's releasing
Yeah, I do too, "hard magic" systems honestly makes much more sense to me than "soft magic" systems (like Harry Potter). Like, if it exists, why wouldn't people study to figure out the rules behind it and such
I once had a fanfiction that tried to make a functioning hard magic system in Harry Potter
I guess you could make arguments about it being connected to entities on another plane and therefore not having steadfast rules or something, but I feel like you could still infer a bunch. And like, it's not like a bunch of stuff today is fully understood either (like gravity and magnets, at least last I heard)
It contained the line "I'm not going to close my eyes and think of benzene."
I mean Harry potter was just a bad magic system
there are "soft" magic systems that are way less shit
That being said, in the scale I mentioned, I was referring to what felt like tech mod but had a thin magic theming. Like, it didn't even feel mystical or anything, it was just a branding type of thing
oh yeah I got you, the ADHD just chimed in
As it does
I don't know. My idea in particular would probably end up being sort of a hybrid between the two extremes.
Leaning more towards soft magic in the beginning, and more towards hard magic towards the end game
(As you start to understand the rules of the system, essentially)
ngl I like the idea of magic being something that inherently defies the regular causation laws of science and therefore being unstudiable by science too
like maybe magic just makes a certain goal happen regardless of what needs to happen to get to it, as opposed to science being about events and consequences
One of the hard parts being coming up with a good research system that is fun to go through, and doesn't feel like a repetitive slog on subsequent playthroughs (looking at you, certain Thaumcraft versions)
i bake bread constantly and don't intend to stop. don't ever come in contact with me or the antimatter explosion will be catastrophic
are you baking bread right now
constantly.
if I were to ever try baking bread would you spontaneously stop for exactly the duration I bake for
Me too. But I feel like you could still figure out some rules/relationships, unless literally everything requires the exact same amount of mana (or cost of some sort)
i am a Sourdough Guy and i was doing it before it was cool! (pre-pandemic)
Like, the more you defy the natural laws, the more magic power you need
And you could come up with different ways to do things.
I'm thinking of a system where there are no hard "mana"/cost requirements basically
but that would much better in a pre written story than an interactive medium haha
My other favorite magic system was the breaking symmetries one
Like, sure, you might could create water from thin air, but it might be easier to convert water vapor in the air to liquid
being a sourdough guy is also my excuse for "constantly", since at most times i have something on bulk ferment
From noether's theorem
I wish I could be a sourdough person
Yeah, I like the idea of systems without hard numbers and such, but you can't really do that well with a video game mechanic (barring stuff like visual novels)
Maybe one day. Five years from now. When I'm living in a tiny commune
Okay I'm too much of a nerd
noether rings a bell
isn't that the maths haiku person
I don't know much about sourdough besides vague knowledge of memes about starters.
Speaking of sourdough starters, I'm suddenly thinking about that segment in the first game changer episode of this season ๐
What was that system like?
Are you telling me there's another MathPerson in these parts? Do we have a Poetic MathPerson secretly lurking?
a dozen, a gross and a score
plus three times the square root of four
divided by seven
plus five times eleven
is nine squared and not a bit more
the person who wrote that one
what's "givey"?
I don't know what a gross is in this context
and it isn't, that's someone called Leigh Mercer apparently
Or givey, but I assumed that was a typo
i don't know what the sourdough starter memes are but they're probably mostly true. /lh
sourdough persons are always inventing reasons to invite people to their ted talks, lmao
gross = 144
givey = I'm on mobile
Vaguely speaking (again, not something I'm not knowledgeable in):
- Stuff about how easy/hard it is (with people on both ends of the argument)
- Stuff about how long it does/doesn't take
- Probably some stuff about it being superior to other bread forms, or something
I don't know what those words mean in that order, but that doesn't sound very magic-y to me
I'll bet. But yeah, it was about magic being able to break or bend the conservation laws
You tricked me into thinking you knew of some fiction with a cool new magic system ๐ (Maybe I should've known better since it was you? ๐ )
(Or at least I've never gotten the impression you read much fiction, especially fantasy)
Cool new magic system or Atra really liking their quantum mechanics professor, pick one
applied maths
yucky

no that was an excellent response
Shoutout to the most recent actual book I read: https://www.amazon.com/Last-Physicist-Gamelit-Fantasy-Adventure-ebook/dp/B091P52QPM
Just sad it is very clearly set up to be a series, but was published 4 years ago and is still the only entry ๐
Being a mage isn't all it's cracked up to be. Especially when you've witnessed the end of the world and the demise of all you've ever loved.
As a particle physicist, William Jenkins is as unsuited to survival on an alien world as any normal thirty-something post-doc could be. Thankfully, he's not...
10/10 would make fun of applied maths again
If I had noticed that before I read it I might not have read it
Title result: The Last Physicist: A Gamelit/Portal Fantasy Adventure (The Archon Book 1) | with a 4.5/5 rating (1,559 reviews)
(Take out /lh)
so you agree pure maths is the best kind of maths, Casey?
Uh, no
It's worse
The only good kind of math is the kind abstracted away so I don't have to worry about it
(I did read plenty of fantasy....as a child.)
hmm you are incorrect but I'll forgive you
(One day I'll get back to that.)
"Why did you study computer science then?" I was tricked into thinking it was pure programming!
If I never see Big-O notation stuff again, it'll be too soon
Compsci is more than a little mathy
some of us studied joint computer science and maths because they couldn't pick and ended up not doing any of the applied parts of either one
because the joint degree didn't include those parts
lmao this absolutely tracks, especially easy/hard
The requirements of compsci at my college not only gave you a minor in math automatically, but if I remember right made it not too hard to go a bit further for another major
I continue to have no understanding of how the minor and major system works
I should add a disclaimer that I enjoyed most of discrete math. But that's not as number-y and doesn't count
Anyways. Past an atra bedtime
but this degree was 50/50
(And note I said "most". Don't ask me to do anything with matrices, I will go crying to Elizabeth like the last two times I needed them for a mod)
I like matrices
Algorithms and data structures was fun. Calculating their efficiency and such? Not so much
they make everything feel so systematic
I really liked several of my CS professors, one of the few people I still talk to from college was one of them
@sand frost can verify my math modding woes
You can also come to me for matrices
Does anyone
What kind of nonsense is linear algebra anyways. You already do algebra on a single line anyways /s
why can you get a degree in a subject but spend a bunch of your time taking courses from other subjects
I do not understand
Tbh if the first mental breakdown hadn't happened I probably would have picked up a physics minor as well
Oh well. I'm too old for regrets in life
You're supposed to be well rounded
at uni???
Yup
why
Probably related to the reason they require a bunch of courses that are completely unrelated to your degree.
To be fair, I can see the argument about making CS students take classes on other stuff, given current tech trends with the way powerful tech people often are
Liberal arts system
And I did enjoy a bunch of those. (ie. the ones I actually took and didn't postpone until I ended up dropping out)
we had a mandatory ethics course as part of the CS degree but it was a special CS one
(I didn't mind. It was fun! Until it wasn't)
I was considering that too. Mental health go brrrr
I think after my first psychology class I was planning on getting a minor in that. I know I took another class or two and enjoyed it
Tbh it's not like a physics minor would help me in life now
mental health go brr indeed, I would have done a lot differently if I was a functional human at uni haha
Mine too!
Like, I am a physics person at work even without a physics minor lol
It might've helped me with actually making progress on one of my KAR clone projects
It's fun!
Casey, as someone who has taken significant physics
It wouldn't.
"at uni" implies you are now... imagine growing past who you were at college, smh ignoring my transition stuff for the bit
but the UK basically lets you stop wasting your time with mandatory subjects at age 16, after that you pick what you want to learn
It would help you know how muons interact with the upper atmosphere
And do jack of all for mechanics, which I learned first semester and never touched again
nuh uh it implies you can stop being a well rounded person at that age and never get back to it
Huh, really? I would say that sounds better from my impression of the US, but I literally did not go to public school after 1/2 through my first semester of 6th grade, so...
I've never been a well rounded person. Unless you count my body, in which case I have indeed gotten rounder as I've gotten older
I took physics all the way up to quantum mechanics, then quantum mechanics at a grad level. Over the last year for work I've needed to polish up quite a bit of my modern physics
Tbh I'm not sure it's important to be a well rounded person
yeah, my A Levels (basically the stuff you learn/tests you do ages 16-18) were maths, further maths, CS, and physics, but it was fully optional what to do
A year ago I would've thought that was crazy that you need to know that stuff for EE. But after my wikipedia rabbithole a couple months ago that started with learning modern cutting edge circuitry has to account for quantum tunneling, I'm not that surprised (though it still baffles me)
my last essay was written at age 16
Quantum is normal. Modern is more odd but necessary for us.
Well, I certainly think it's better not to be a well rounded person in the sense I was talking about (purely for health reasons) ๐
Wow. Even in college I had essays meant for being worked on across several weeks that I actually threw together in a hour or two the night before
Meanwhile me doing radio lol
In college!
I also square danced
<insert that dropout smartypants presentation about procrastinating that I mentioned the other day>
I didn't see this?
Anyways, now that I enter real life hood
What's the difference?
Admittedly before a couple months ago I didn't realize that atomic level things were technically included in QM. I had thought it was purely sub-proton/electron/etc. level stuff
I....have no use for the French I learned
counterpoint: you lose certain "jolly older witch you stumbled into in the forest" vibes /lh
but ngl I've always been more drawn to granny weatherwax vibes than nanny ogg vibes for my own aesthetic
Unfortunately I looked and the full presentation isn't on youtube
I refuse to elaborate on that statement any further
It's the last third of season 2 episode 1 of Smartypants if you have/get a Dropout subscription though
I think of quantum mechanics as "how tiny things behave" and modern as "okay now toss in an insane amount of energy" but that is my take on it
Well, I refuse to get a dropout subscription
I would not have paid for a todo list app if it was a subscription tbh
Also I'm highly considering paying for my strength training tracking app only because it isn't a subscription
It's lifetime
Hmm, but I'd rather be a ditzy little cute witch ๐
(I've never used an app for runs, that has been lifelong pen and paper)
ngl I'd rather be the librarian. Ultimate vibes
(I have only within the past week or two figured out a vague sense of the vibe I'd want for myself aesthetically... and am limited by the technology of my times my body ๐ )
I still think a nice cat ear beret makes sense for you
(he got turned into an orangutan by a stray curse and decided he actually prefers this form so refuses to get changed back. also he hates people trying to read the books in the library)
Anyways
That's fair, though it's only $7/mo (or $6 if you subscribe before May 7 - they're letting anyone subscribed before that date keep the old price)
pondering if I should pay for the lifting app
I always liked the unseen university stuff but once I went to the university it's parodying I liked it even more
or the Chinese app
how much is it?
$70 lifetime
hmm, not terrible but not cheap
Yeah
And they're actually pro-password sharing oddly enough, so if you're interested I can share my account with you. (note: this offer is extended specifically to atra, the rest of you here don't have a high enough heart level with me ๐ )
Thanks, but I also know I won't get around to watching anything
two hearts seems awfully low to be allowed to break into someone's house
how many hearts is a dropout subscription share
0.3? 7?
This vaguely reminds me of that vending machine isekai anime, where he seems to have an option for telepathy and maybe one day even becoming human but is avoiding the former and isn't sure he even wants the latter. (Though it largely seems to be feeling like he'll drive people away then, especially if he didn't have vending machine powers anymore to be useful to them, so perhaps a little bit of therapy or something would help with that ๐ )
Never seen these before but they do look cute. I've never been much of a hat person but I've never been much of a anything fashion adjacent person either, so...
Kind hard to say, since this reality seems to be a not-easily-quantifiable kind like we talked about with magic earlier (the one about it being fun for stories but not great for game mechanics)
I'm also very much of the opinion that relationships aren't that one dimensional. Like, you could like and care about someone a lot but not trust them as far as you can throw them, for example.
(This sort of thought applies to many other things too for me. Like, attractiveness - it's why I don't really comprehend the whole 10 point scale thing a lot of people seem to use)
I like how when I google "cat ear beret" the first result is berets for cats on Amazon
i mostly eschew rankings in general. like, do not ask me to name a top ten or top five or whatever of anything. the best you will get from me is a vague bucket like "top tier" or "really good", a category in which all entries are unsorted
But like, I do like this for example. (Though part of it might be the fair being in the picture - looking at the images tab, I do seem like most of the ones with hair (whether an actual person or a model like this picture) more than I do the ones that are just the hat itself)
"favorite X" is also dangerous. the best i can do is "favorite X right now"
Yeah, same here.
That being said, sometimes I still might be able to recognize "number one spot" sort of thing for things that are subjective. Some things that isn't the case for (like "number one favorite food"), but a couple things I can think of one (like attractiveness (purely appearance aspects, anyways), there is a specific person I have in mind for that and have for... as long as I've been attracted to anyone, essentially)
(Also re: attraction, I've never quite understood the obsession a lot of people have with celebrities on that front, I find people I actually have met and know in person easily surpass any celebrity)
Looking at the cat ear berets more, I wish I had even the smallest amount of fashion sense to know how to put things together. ๐ (And didn't dislike my body enough to feel that it invalidates literally any look I could go for, but hey, that's what therapy is for I guess)
matrices!!
runs away in fear
(Congratulations everyone, you're now free from my rambling in this channel... for now)
If an image of matrices gets pinned I might never return
(That or I'll just unpin it via power abuse, but then I'd have to look at the image long enough to find the button)
what if they're friendly matrices
My fear of matrices is deeply engrained and has no regard for the complexities of reality
As long as I don't see any complex math with them. The only thing allowed is storing coordinates
I will make an exception for atan2, but that's it
Also, while we're at it. Quaternions are banned too
Is rotation allowed?
I'm seeing a potential line of jokes about only allowing operations on individual components, leading to abstracting those away behind functions, leading to abstracting behind data structures which may or may not bear a striking resemblance to matrices/quaternions.
But I'm not knowledgeable enough to follow through with that line of jokes (unlike with the evil arc for etch and sketch discord the other day). And it would also dilute the bit of me being scared of math with me turning into what I swore to destroy instead.
Why is math something to be destroyed?
Update: I paid for the lowest tier of the Chinese app
Sigh
I understand people have to make money but
you weren't strong enough
oh
ok the entire video summed up is that you will now be able to do this
person?.name = "new name";
holy clickbait
only assign a value to name if person is not null
neat I suppose
I'm sure I'll use it
though 90% of the time it's better to just have an early return if an object is null
and given the null checking already in the language, it seems like a nothingburger
it's a minor convenience update
Syntactical sugar is nice and all, my issue is how dumb the title of the YT movie is
average nick chapsas clickbait
especially since literally nothing has to change
it has no impact on performance either
it's not more fault tolerant...
I'll use it when it's convenient but I ain't refactoring my applications for it
i've definitely ran into this particular thing before though
nice that it's happening
it is
it's always nice not to have to write three lines for something trivial you do all the time
love when languages add those features
Fuck yeahhhhh
You have no clue how much I've wanted thissssss
case in point
maybe it changes everything after all then
I'm actually surprised this wasn't already possible, but that just shows that the use cases for it are probably on the smaller side
I don't blame Nick for doing the clickbait. Whether it's typical YouTube user behavior or the algorithm at play here, he is directly incentivized to produce such headlines. Imagine if your paycheck varied depending on your pull request summaries, you'd sure as hell optimize that to ensure you are getting paid well rather than less or not at all.
At least when you get into the video, it's still interesting content/coverage on topics I'm interested in.
Clickbait to me is when the video entices me to watch, but there's no payoff.
(Please ignore that almost all modern technology is basically impossible without advanced math. I want the positive without the negative)
