They fully assemble the DIY editions for validation prior to shipping, yes
It's also just easier to ship most things already put together rather than ~20 small components
then why is the DIY version cheaper
they're just quirky
They have an Agenda
Actually, when putting together an identical DIY of a 16 to a pre-built option it's $159 more expensive.
The prebuilts have the older screen
Which goes down to $20 more expensive if you ditch the Windows license, and then less expensive if you buy cheaper components elsewhere.
The US ones at least
Oh, they do? Interesting
"13.5" 2256x1504 60Hz Matte Display" vs the newer "2.8K 13.5" 2880x1920 120Hz matte display"
If I equip a Ryzen 300 series DIY 13 similar to a prebuilt, it's $1481 prebuilt and $1517 DIY. If you buy your own RAM and SSD though it'll be much cheaper than the prebuilt
Also with the DIY you can get the 2.8K screen
and skip buying Windows ($139)
I wonder if Framework actually has to pay for Windows licenses
For the prebuilts, that is
I have to assume they have some volume license for those
I'm going to assume they don't pay at all, which is why Windows is the only choice for pre-builts.
Or it's a very, very cheap volume deal.
Oh Im certain they pay, I highly doubt an OEM is getting away with pirated keys
I think she means they might have a deal with MS to get the keys free so long as they preinstall
Not just that, but they don't offer Linux as a pre-install, even though Linux works great and has officially supported distros.
Oh, yeah I'm sure MS is cutting them some sort of bulk deal
Microsoft had to do a good deal for that, surely.
I do wonder how many people are specifying linux, but also wouldnt just wipe the thing immediately
I guess if they go more mainstream that's less likely
Microsoft doesn't really care about licensing costs so much as they care about getting people into the Windows ecosystem, from my understanding.
It probably saves them support resources just having Windows ready out of the box, and it's likely that they use it for at least some validation prior to shipping
So probably works out well for both them and MS
Linux peep are too particular for that
True.
Having manufacturing processes for even just 4 or 5 distros would quickly overcomplicate getting laptops out the door, I'd think
"We now have Linux pre-installed!" "Why do you only offer this machine with dorbian and not genfoo what kind of idiots"
Sorry, Khloe, I want red hat 6
Not Mandrake?
We only offer Rocky Linux here sorry
I wonder how many ppl go out of their way to get rid of steamos
Theyre not considered people
not '90s-era Slackware?
give them a modern distro, but they all have basic ass hyprland
you give them hyprland but don't install the default terminal from the config
it's where linux peaked
Just start with 128 GB like me /s
I have no idea which Dance Dance Revolution game my RAM is playing, I've never paid a whole lot of attention to that (nor understood it super well, besides presumably faster)
faster ddr
I mean, Dance Dance Revolution gets faster in the same game as you progress in levels, right? Clearly I just need to use my RAM more to level it up, like an RPG /s
...suddenly having a cursed game idea: Dance Dance Revolution, the RPG
...which kinda just sound like ringfit to be honest
Also re:GPUs - I'm pretty sure I have a spare RTX 3080 just sitting around somewhere in my apartment.
When my last desktop broke when I moved, I was gonna try to replace the graphics card to see if that helped (the problem I was having was glitches on the screen - mostly white particles if I remember correctly), but the one I got from microcenter was a little too big for my case and I never bothered returning it. (I had a 3080 already and assumed since same model = similar enough size to fit, but apparently the different manufacturers have different sizes for them, who knew?)
It was probably the motherboard though
Hence why I just got a new computer instead of putting tons of effort into figuring it out
I mean, why not
I'm suddenly realizing Crypt of the Necrodancer is sorta DDR the RPG... it even would work with dance pads given you can play through with just arrow keys
Crypt of the necrodancer is HARD
maybe i'm just bad
but I like that you can play as hatsune miku
I enjoyed it, have 21 hours in it from 2017.
But yes, it's hard. Which might be why I never got far into it, see yesterday's (?) discussion about me and hard video games
I really really like DDR but I think if i tried to play crypt of the necrodancer on a dance pad i'd truly fail lol
I haven't seen the hard video game discussion but I bet i have similar views
My fiance likes that one I think
I am also on team hard games are not for me
I’ve tried DDR a couple times and I’m not good at that either
Many people would say video games should have soul. While I would tend to agree, I draw the line as it grows closer to 'souls-like'
If the game has a boss fight I have to try more than 5ish times I start going "why did I buy this" haha
Tbh I would probably like ddr
In the Before Times (pre covid) I used to like that in the rare times a lab or class or whatever would go out
I don't think I can buy ram for this machine no more
I'm not toooo worried (at the worst, I can probably go and buy an old enterprise machine off ebay)
I'm at the age where money starts being the thing I really want to save as much as possible tbh because the Big Purchase (a house?????) is coming up soon and I want to blitz through the mortgage as fast as possible
Oh you can go buy RAM for junk from the 80s still
upgrade your ram from 4 MB to 16 MB
i'm so dumb
Yes but it gets expensive tbh
how old are we talking, anyway?
I'm just wondering if we're talking DDR2 or like. punch cards
Small caged mice actually
(I'm not even sure, but it's probably ddr3)
How ducking old do you think I am, Iro?
see this is why I was wondering. DDR3 isn't that old or expensive, atra
punch cards aren't ram... it cannot be randomly accessed and it's not volatile
I have bought DDR3 SODIMM before
you ram them into the machine though. checkmate atheist
damn you got me
no I just thought you were a big enough nerd to buy computers from before you were born
I dealt with old computers in college/grad school
Now that I'm a real person I just don't anymore
I don't sysadmin for myself much, I just have the second IT hat at work
It was fun back in school getting A+ certification
And having to know things about SCSI drives. And jumpers. And all these different things.
And so little of it is relevant anymore.
I haven't done any hardware stuff outside of fixing my own PCs in years
I wonder how many data centers still have SCSI in use
Obviously the number isn't zero, but how many is it?
I like how you're implying people still in college aren't real persons.
Considering the mental difference HRT made, which I started around when I dropped out, that tracks
I've never heard of scsi before but looking it up some of the connectors just look like wide VGA, which doesn't sound right
I can give you a more specific answer.
||Probably greater than one.|| ||I didn't say my more specific would be any more helpful, now did I||
That is technically more specific.
The answer is almost all of them if we count SAS!
I fairly recently got my A+ certification, and they still include all of the things that are probably irrelevant now
(fairly recently as in 2022)
what is an a+ cert
The thing I got in... Probably 2006? Mine isn't out of date at all!
I've got the CompTIA Project+, Network+, and A+
I even got the catchy named MCDST alongside it. Also definitely not useless anymore.
Yeah, I got mine in 2006
What r these for
In theory, resume padding to prove you know how to do hardware stuff.
In practice I have literally never used mine
Yeah, it's just something to list on your resume, otherwise I don't have much use for it
I was in this computer class back in school and they said they'd pay for us to get certified in things
Although Network+ did help me a bit with some of the skills I use for homelabbing
So I took basically every certification they offered me
My company encourages me to get certifications. Most of the ones I'm doing now are about Cloud technologies.
Annoyed the teacher because back then I was very much a bratty kid about knowing things, but then I passed everything without studying for it and thus proved I knew things.
And now I've got useful stuff like Microsoft Office 2003 Specialist.
(I miss Office 2003. Ribbon UI sucks.)
In my current role, I rarely have to use office anymore, but I think 2010 was the last version that I used where it was a big part of my daily tasks
I've never heard of this before tbh
I could probably pass that without studying though
Exciting news
Party's over time to start a mailing list
back to irc we go
We never left
At least we can still use Uber. We just need Bouncer and Governor and we're set.
luckily we have just the person for that right here
What does this mean
the world explodes
It means ads babyyyy
Just a further step on the road to Discord becoming slop as they try to monetize their platform and go public, because what's the point of having a business if you're not chasing infinite money in the name of fiduciary responsibility.
The suggestions I've heard are that Discord needs to have a "proven" CEO or whatever in order to get their IPO off the ground.
there are few pieces of news that make me as pessimistic about a product as "the company that's making it is aiming to go public"
How about "the company that's making it has made a former Activision/Blizzard executive who was also formerly the company of King, known for such games as Candy Crush Saga, their CEO"
i hope it stays nice-enough because otherwise my whole time of pushing discord on people over other chat platforms will be for nothing
very fun
if only matrix were good
Isn't Activision like currently being sued for like nine million things
at least yes
If anyone here goes to make Discord alternative and opts to use Electron or adjacent...
Including sexual harassment
(Also every time I read his name I read it as "Human" first and think "Hello yes I am a human too very normal." which is honestly nothing against him just I can not train my brain to read the word correctly lol)
that's several of them yes
Welp maybe finally I'll go to mastadon
Mastodon is a very different kind of platform I'm afraid
2025 is the year of XMPP
i tried mastodon and...meh
Again?
2025 is the year of Linux desktop
mastodon doesn't organize things into spaces the way discord does, it's more like twitter
i could go back to emailing all my friends
we could go back to listservs
no
that sounds terrible ngl
just judging by the quality of many steam reviews
that sounds like trying to build a community on the nexus comment section
The cool thing about Mastodon is that literally every non technical user I have ever shown it to is like "what's that it's gross I don't like this" and I gave up and now we just use bluesky instead
who's joining me in the Microsoft Teams Stardew Valley Server
reminds of my slightly off his rocker neighbor who wanted to set up an apartment building-wide signal chat
Hilarious
i had to explain in small words
Elizabeth I should get your wechat
that literally no one was going to download it
let me get back to you about whether i have a wechat
that was not a serious suggestion
i can't keep track of all these newfangled chat apps
I love my dad but having to wechat him annoys the hell out of me
the undergrads use all kinds of ones i never used before
Him to me: can you review this paper
my mom and dad were actually the ones who said we should switch to signal for messaging which still surprises me
Me to him: can you for the love of God email it to me and don't use wechat
You're old I'm not why am I bitchijg about the usage of chat platforms
report: i do not have a wechat
i mixed up wechat and whatsapp
there are too many apps
we should get rid of a few of them
I didn't think wechat was used outside china
i have a lot of immigrant friends/people with family back home in china
so it was sort of plausible
plus a friend went there for work a while back
WhatsApp reigns where I live and everyone will have it installed
and this friend does not speak chinese
<insert xkcd>
so i was thinking about getting it for that, maybe??
heyyyy i didn't say i would make an app! i said we should get rid of some!
Someone else would!
if i start making an app you should get me checked out for being replaced by a pod person
app development sounds possibly worse than website making
I look forward to LizChat
©️ powered by Matlab
I don't have whatsapp
but i have contributed to a matlab app
I'm practicing antisocial behavior
i had to get whatsapp, the kids at work are all on it
I need WhatsApp for just about everything. Even communication with support or like, my plumber
i didn't realize it was that ubiquitous
i was thinking it was like fb messenger in its heyday
which i also did not really get on board with
getting whatsapp was my big concession this year to modernity
Lol
WhatsApp is how communication on phones is done here. SMS/RCS etc pretty much aren't used and neither is imessage really
i use texting, imessage, gchat, and signal socially
I use WhatsApp for random shit/work people and signal for my family
whatsapp for work, slack for vaguely work-ish club-type things, discord for fun
I don't use discord
Discord uses you.
I use wechat with family
modernity feels like a funky claim for WhatsApp considering it's been the default here for over a decade now
look, previously my main chat for a long time was gchat...i've been told this makes me a relic of the past
people have said things like "wow, people still use that??"
That new fangled Google chat...
Back in my days, we used AIM
Yes
asl?
I should add you on gchat
does gchat differ from hangouts?
Yesno
well, hangouts is dead
i did not know hangouts died
it's Google meets now
I used to use it with my friends a long time ago
Replaced, users were forced migrated
don't worry the new hangouts is basically the same
Because Google replaces it's messaging apps every 5 or so years
gchat gets a rebrand every 5 years or so but as a user honestly i don't see the difference
I used to use Google hangouts at work before we switched to slack
biggest upgrade in communication I experienced while working there
I wish discord is more like slack and slack is more like discord sometimes
gchat is great for talking to people 1:1 but as a work coordination platform...
Slack doesn't support as much markdown
But i really like the threads impl it's more natural
i've used it in tiny tiny workplaces and that works ok but it's not like organized or permanent
at work I always try to use slack like discord and occasionally a feature differs and i get confused
i do <> all the time in slack
People at my work never really took to Slack threads correctly
I get mad when onenlte doesn't support markdown
it does not work
Sammmmeeee in teams
these days i get mad whenever anything doesn't support markdown
funnily enough i blame github readmes for that
I used to do :bolb verbatim at work and my coworker ask what did i mean by this
somehow both Slack and Teams have this weird issue where trying to use codeblocks is jank and you seemingly kind of get stuck in them or they're nearly impossible to modify again afterwards
I've never had issues on discord
My work switched from Slack to Teams. My biggest complaint is that information is not as easily discoverable in Teams.
Not to mention there is this Viva Engage product for communities that does not feel integrated at all
I have a love hate with teams btw
i have only hate
a hate hate
fortunately no one here is trying to get us to use teams
Interesting... breaking news on Discord. The CEO is stepping down, and new leadership will be exploring an IPO. Beginning of the end for us here.
despite the terrible outlook we all use
that's what kicked off this whole discussion xD
Ah, I missed that part
Yup. I need to set up backup comms channels with some of y'all lol
Not that Discord has been the best example of a product done right, but I can only imagine what will be needed for them to be IPO friendly
This'll be reddit all over again, but I guess inevitably it all worked out well for them
I've personally protested reddit ever since a few of their decisions
Last time I went on reddit they were trying to sell me stocks and nfts so. Not sure that reddit is doing well
At least with how they do accounting, I'm pretty sure they're reporting the numbers go up
Reddit is pure hims and hers ads for me
the subreddits for wedding stuff are better than the facebook groups, so i still use reddit
The sad thing is that for specific knowledge reddit is amazing
Oh I didn't mean ads, I meant they had a ui button for managing stocks through reddit and kept trying to get me to buy nft clothing for my avatar
I was on r/linux earlier trying to fix my copy paste issues
Welcome to /r/Linux!
This is a community for sharing news about Linux, interesting developments and press.
If you're looking for tech support, /r/Linux4Noobs and /r/linuxquestions are friendly communities that can help you.

Please refrain from posting help requests he...
reddit is corrupt, time to go back to digg
awful...
What what
Why
I only manage stocks through my. Uh. Bank....
Fuck if I know, there's a reason I'm not a regular any more
Tbh I also don't log in to reddit
That's probably why
I haven't actually logged in in years, I'm just automatically logged in still
R/linux or r/electricalengineering
I guess the login tokens never expire
I also was reading r/etfs
In the absence of reddit in my life, I replaced it with brainrot, aka TikTok
Tbh I see and use reddit semiproducticely I don't stay there
i feel way too old for tiktok
Tumblr and discord are the only ones I use these days, and when those are gone I'll just become a digital hermit
Other than r/knitting I don't stay and browse

I look at what Google showed me and leave. It's like using stackexchange
I do check out r/knitting though

Sometimes r/crochet
botto really could chill out on the links lol
How did you manage to replace it with smth worse lol
Do y'all look at r/StardewValley
Occasionally
Not rly
every so often something genuinely fascinating and cool, plus a lot of nonsense
I follow it but i almost never actually click on any post, i mostly just see the titles
my fiance likes to tell me about the cool ones
I used to like hobby drama but alas that sub went below some critical number
TikTok's secret sauce is a very efficient algorithm at delivering content for you specifically. No one is technically too old for it as soon as they have enough information on your viewing habits.
I don't really use reddit for fandom stuff any more because aside from the occasional useful news post most of it is stuff I couldn't care less about
So the new posts r missing some vibe
Passing things without studying is great until it lasts until the latter half of college where you literally do not know how to study. glares at foreign language requirements
Totally not speaking from experience
my attention span for short videos is ironically not that long
TikTok gives me a lot of recipes
i do watch a few now and then, but most of the tiktok "style" i find hugely annoying so i close the window
Also r/terraria is just chock full of mediocre big tiddy art of npcs
Same lol
I tend to prefer long form podcasts
i like to watch long cooking videos
i haven't found good ones recently though
i've gotten into videos about trains recently
I like documentaries and technical videos but it's hard to find good documentarians
I just watch reels of 2 week old tiktoks on instagram like an old person, this is also the sole reason i still have an instagram account
What could go wrong?
i have no idea where to find documentaries, but most of the technical videos i've been watching recently have been on nebula
i never got an instagram
they make it annoying if you don't have an account so I've been refusing to cave
Oh i made one in highschool
Show off those sexy knitting pictures
My last picture on it is from 2016
At this point most of the TikTok videos I see aren't even necessarily "short form" it's more reminiscient of the OG youtube days where videos weren't 30+ minutes long
i've thought about getting one once or twice because genuinely some businesses (photography, florists) conduct all their stuff over instagram
Most of us aren't as productive as you
So I have I. I still have nightmares about it to this day. /s
When was the last time I published a mod
YouTube became more like TV, and TikTok videos are reaching 5-10 minutes now
on a purely objective level that's so true lol
one day maybe tiktok will become like tv
and then some new platform will rise up
Didn't even know that was possible
and youtube will have to be, idk one of those 4 hour movies
I know IRC is older but I used AIM before I used IRC. Technology trends are weird
Tbh I'm seriously considering trying to self-host an irc server
Rn I'm listening to the Stronger By Science podcast
I never used AIM
Gchat was the first chat I used
Tbh I don't get tiktok
In today’s episode, Eric shares a sauna update that explores the effects of sauna bathing on exercise recovery and training adaptations. Next, Greg presents a research review segment that covers the surprisingly positive effects of plyometric exercises on muscle hypertrophy. After that, Eric answers a listener’s questions related to intuitiv...
i get it, i just don't like it
This is what I'm currently listening to
You can self-host a Discord-like service using Matrix
like i do understand the lure of tiktok broadly
Matrix seems alright but aspects of it are obtuse, and it still uses a central auth server.
There was also rocketchat I think? But the self-hosted version is web-only
My grandmother likes xiaohong
It's so weird
It's like I'm the least social media of anyone in my family
THAT INCLUDES MY GRANDMOTHER
my grandma doesn't have social media
she does have a big group chat with all her siblings
she has 7 siblings, so it's a bit chaotic
I'm not talking about a real mod. I'm talking about a placeholder mod that's solely used for centraling discussion of a particular topic in the comments area
Also, I would like to point out how unproductive I have been
i bet you've released more mods than i have in the last year
You'd think that, given one of the main purposes of the internet is to talk to people, we'd have better options by now
My grandpa just couldn't learn whatsapp so he can talk to the rest of us and then we find out he's figured out fb messenger on his own and is chatting to ladies
I used to use mibbit for the tiny (5 people including myself were regulars) community I was on. Wonder if that server is still up
What if we just use the comment section of articles in spacecore
"googles mibbit irc, sees first result* Oh it is!
clicks link oh, it's not
Oh that reminds me
Have you ever heard of barnes and noble book review warriors rp
No pls tell
Why did discussions ever have to evolve from Disqus?
It's decided then, meet you there when discord explodes
I remember one of the people I knew in that IRC complained to me a lot because how much I used :P seemed strange because the vibe of the mibbit icon was much "friendlier" than the one I in the desktop client I used
There is a new forum software everyone is using these days and I love it
Both qspice and kicad use it
Can we all just go back to phpBB?
nooo pho is nice
(Marry pho)
I'm not sure the mods I post purely as an outlet for dumb ideas count... (Autocorrect Valley, Random Cats in Events, Angry Seagulls)
I thought the main purpose of the internet was cat pictures
what do you think hats on turtles was? 🐢
Random cats in event is a must have wdym
That too
implying spacecore has any articles or reasonable documentation
(keyword reasonable, the super dense readme list of featurs is technically documentation)
Who needs documentation when you can just read the source code /jk
Who needs documentation when you have AI that can misinterpret everything incorrectly and give you broken code?
That's perfect then we can repurpose the space easily
...RP for the warrior cat series?
To be fair I remember seeing worlds like that on Roblox ages ago (like >15 years)
Never got into any actual RP but did enjoy the book series, I think the third series was like half way done or something when I stopped reading them
this is fascinating
I was confused as to how book reviews were used for rp and thought you were kidding or made a typo. Well, uh.... guess not
What's the name of this current trendy forum software?
<flashbacks to when I wrote a wiki+forum website from scratch back when the site we used to be on died all we had was IRC for a while>
No idea
I'm just a dumb user now
Using PHP.
Kicad and qspice both use it
I remember writing my own bbcode parser
bbcode is terrible ime
We can't have a communication platform with source code.
...unless...
github repos, branches, and commits for discussion????
I've seen a couple communities I follow move from Discord to Circle as their new platform, but in both cases it really hasn't taken off
As in the community on Discord is still much more active
I don't know how to respond to this, but no
Oh and there's Discourse
it seems to be called discourse (kicad's forum software
github has too functional of a discussion system compared to barnes and noble comments sections
I was just thinking, we should only communicate through commits now
like, you can deliberately make a new issue
and then comment on the issue
and you can even comment more than once!
We shall communicate in the Twitch chat of a 24 hour livestream of kittens playing
We're deliberately avoiding the actual discussion features. Not even comments on commits are allowed or you're banned
And they have to be signed commits too to prevent impersonation, of course
real hackers just control the hash code of the commit to make comments?
Of course.
Use text files with pull requests to add comments to the text files
We're also implementing a bot that auto rolls back any pushes that edit other peoples files (since files are messages and folders are channels)
That sounds too technical, what if we all communicated through IRL dead drops
This has the added benefit of allowing to see full message edit history instead of just "(edited)"
the latency would be terrible
what we need are messenger pigeons
We shall communicate through multiple live streams of Twitch Plays Notepad (played like Twitch Plays Pokemon)
I have 2, i can lend you one
great cause i think the way they work they only go back home
Use written books in minecraft
This reminds me of one of my past jobs where one of my coworkers and I would always message each other when the shortened commit hash of any of our commits were all numbers (or very close)
so i have to borrow one from each of you first
Iconic
If it works for the international library server thing, it works for us
...I just had an even more cursed idea
You can't move when bird are loud?
Communicate only using messages that are just links to pages of the online impl. of the library of babel
It sounds important
Cutie
(What the love of god)
Microsoft Word lets you collaborate on a single word doc. That could be a mode of having discussions
Why not use google docs
google docs chat specifcally
Google docs comments*
they have a built-in chat
My god
but it doesn't persist
I look away for five minutes to debug my verilog
it's perfect for middle schoolers
If it's going to be Google Docs, at least can we use Google Sheets so that I can use my formulas?
Yeah let's do google sheets
aww they may have ditched the document chat
Each column is a thread
See you at column 2718
there's also the fun notes/comments dual feature in sheets
Exactly
columns are letters chu smh
Unless you're like me and you use RC format
How about a web-based multiplayer etch and sketch board
What happens after Z then
AA
What could possibly go wrong
AB, AC, AD
Column what?
We can do rows for threads if that makes you more comfortable
that looks suspiciously like excel
You'll have to implement a alphabet-to-number compatibility layer for your interface, I guess
R1C1 format is best format
It's surprisingly hard to find an online multiplayer etch and sketch. It's a super practical idea so why hasn't anyone done it yet?
this is what i have on google sheets
There's your next project then
I was just about to post that I half want to do it
The main problem being needing a server to host it on
I do have a server that I'm paying for and not really using...
See how these things solve themselves? It's perfect
Isn't there draw io
Yes
- Does that have collaboration?
- Does that have a mode where you're limited to etch and sketch controls?
etch and sketch mode is very critical to a communication platform
The etch and sketch element is mandatory
I understand, forgive my insolence
What do ppl use instead of overleaf now
nothing, they still use overleaf
(We use gitlab)
Noooo
hehe
We use gitlab tbh
i don't know anyone in academia who uses something other than overleaf, word, or email
ok i might know someone who uses google docs
WebAndSketchMP core features:
* Optionally private rooms where people can join with a password to collaborate together.
* User accounts where you pick a color for your sketch contributions to be. Note that each color can only be picked once, meaning we are unfortunately limited to 2^24 users on the website.
* Literally no permissions system for the shake function. If you can get in the room, you can clear the board
the big tex/not tex divide is a huge factor
I see LaTeX. No, vetoed
Yes, I have veto power here
We need color waiting room
but whats the color system
Pick an RGB color that isn't taken by someone else yet. Congrats, everything you draw will now be that color.
can you change the colour
i call dibs on a purple
ofc not its your user id
Stretch goals:
- (PAID) Sketch trail patterns, so you can transition across colors as you write
- (PAID) Animated trails, to cycle between colors after you already placed them.
- (PAID) Being able to make your trail thicker than a single pixel.
- Open world mode, an infinite landscape you can travel and find others to draw with
and will you have microtransactions for users to bid on sought-after colours such as #000000
But you can't input the numbers, you have to pick it manually
Well, black would be the default, as per normal etch and sketch. But otherwise I don't see why not, like atra said
BUT
Every month all colors are auctioned to the highest bidder
If someone ever pays more than you, they steal your color and all your past contributions go back to black
but how is colour unique
if black is always default
Stretch stretch goals:
- Combat system where you can steal colors from someone
Hmm, good point.
We need in game currency
I was just about to say that atra. If you want to be visible, you have to pay
Enshittification before we even start the product, I should go become a CEO
Or maybe everyone is black by default, but their contributions fade over time (not days - think minutes)
is this normal drawing controls or do you need to plug in atari paddles to use
Bongos
Arrow keys only
just make them a gradient from black to transparent
can we have a banana controller too
No "stop drawing" functionality, to stay true to the etch and sketch spirit
Different speeds are available, also paid.
"Zero" is a paid option, meaning you can't stop moving
It'll be like playing snake, sorta
...oh. A premium feature to not die when you run into someone elses color
will this be:
- a html canvas (limited support on older browsers)
- a big svg file (easy to export)
- a lot of html (best compatibility)
And/or that's how you kill someone to steal their color
Pop up with pay or watch an ad to continue
Could the latter two options even be dynamic enough for a game experience? I mean, I guess you could reload the page every time...
orrrrr it could be a jpeg file
I think Casey just nerdsniped herself into multiplayer snake
Fiiiine, battle royalle is a separate mode entirely, the main mode will be closer to true etch and sketch
Meta refresh is a method of instructing a web browser to automatically refresh the current web page or frame after a given time interval, using an HTML meta element with the http-equiv parameter set to "refresh" and a content parameter giving the time interval in seconds. It is also possible to instruct the browser to fetch a different URL when ...
On my desk by next Tuesday?
I was thinking a Godot application (embedded in the web page) with a standalone server/API in PHP for managing accounts/purchases and such
You still owe me a buggy minigame
Wait which minigame was that
i dont think netscape would suppor that
if you implement a version of this in stardew it could b a minigame
In all honesty I could probably knock out this original vision in a day, though I might have to spend a little time learning about how I'd do the hosting/persistence stuff first (though I'm thinking rooms will disappear once everyone leaves)
would this multiplayer be with other people inyour stardew game or other people using the browser version
Hence why I was actually considering making that first version for fun 😛
Then they can download the standalone desktop version, or the mobile version with ads
the most important part is what will you name it
i dont think my windows 3.1 machine would support that
Better etch and sketch
a machine that definitely exists and is very real
Oh, I guess we never decided on any specifics on the minigames gameplay
Like, even a genre
betch a sketch for short
Moon buggy minigame
bketch me after work
If you play in stardew your farmer head shows up in browser where your cursor is
Just betch
ok i like it
Like I mentioned here, WebAndSketchMP (or maybe Online instead of MP?)
#programmers-off-topic message
will this have an open API for other mod integrations, such as for minecraft?
web and sketch is actually quite good
Use your phone then.
Or I could make a discord activity version, then you literally have to be able to use it since you're in discord right now
that would actually be a very good idea
Can i play it on my fridge
can anyone just make those
if its an android fridge maybe
The client will be open source so I guess you could port it if you jailbreak your fridge
wow
Brb jailbreaking my fridge
You don't still have to get discord approval now? Huh
i dont think so?
From a quick google search you're right
Cool, if I make it discord exclusive I could not worry about account management or implementing shopping cart stuff
Casey will look just like that image while making this
Wasn't the whole point to have an alternative to discord
I mean, Web and Sketch started as a discord alternative, but in today's age you sometimes have to work with your enemies to get a foothold to move past them
the thing is when its a discord activity its just an iframe
if you unscrew the doors is that jailbreaking?
Oh please, everyone knows I'm a cat
you can just use the same codebase with discord oauth and have outside of discord working
Only if you're fridge door is really iron bars like in a jail. Which... not sure how well that would work as a fridge...
Badly
But then I have to implement the account management and premium shopping stuff myself
The whole point of integrating with discord besides removing the entire point of web and sketch is to reduce my workload
make shopping in-app only
Make it a we chat app
I was more referring to the whole "large air gaps between bars" part 😛
Or one of those YouTube games
or a netflix game!!
like hulu but they used to mail discs
It's a new type of fridge
ohh that's also bad yes
Darn, w4 games cloud option seems to only have enterprise pricing ("contact us"). Guess that option is out the window.
https://www.w4games.com/w4cloud
what was that an option as
Multiplayer backend
ohh multiplayer
smh why don't they have a "shitpost" tier
"best solution for your company"
my company is one person working on this inbetween netflix sessions pls
i've heard convex is good for syncing data but that's probably too "fancy" and "good" and "not for random drawing things"
Man, you gotta move up to working on it during netflix sessions if you want to qualify as a company
how do you know "inbetween netflix sessions" isn't two monitors on either side of a chair both playing netflix
That's too much investment for a one person company
Though I suppose I do have three monitors in a row on this desktop...
Be realistic, one of them has youtube on it
why is someone trying to sell webandprintdesign.com for $5k
though thankfully the only webandsketch registered is .fm for some reason??
That's the center monitor
where is the IDE then
on the phone
Pen and paper
Haha, for maximum jank this would be a .github.io of course
but then how backend
My god I enjoy code that has to be run before I know I misspelled a function name
An irl etch and sketch
I already have a server 😛
so it's just a twitch stream of a real etch and sketch
Just not a web and sketch specific domain
Notepad at least had working find and replace
See, you get it
What I could do is make it a webpage on my new website that I started working on a while back and never finished...
so the frontend is on a .github.io, and then it just calls to the backend on a completely separate domain
this fits very goodin the theme of this
But if I post it as it is right now people are gonna look at the 20% completed spacecore docs and go "where's the rest of it"
have a blur effect on the docs
Just claim to be retired from modding
the blur gets less blurry the more they spend on web and sketch
Worked for me!
Well sure, domains are so much more pricey than using my dedicated server which is used for almost literally nothing, you see
(Plewse don't. You're actually a good modder)
you aren't wrong
I don't want to inflict that on Pathos
but .pp.ua and .nom.fr are free
You're a good person
I'm talking an actual full on dedicated server, not some simple shared hosting VPS
why do you have a dedicated bare metal server that you dont use
The rest is premium content you have to be top 10 on the WebAndSketch leaderboard to get it
>implying I have more than 10 users
I guess I could make fake users to make it hard to get to
Like junimo cart in SDV
Exactly
i wonder why there are several thousand users called "IAmNotABot"
Because I had big ideas at one point, like every hobbyist with ADHD
i see
please ignore my increasingly large domain collection i cannot say much here either
I haven't even used it the few times I've hosted a minecraft server
mods.directory is good if i actually did something with it
Speaking of which, really need to go cancel those two (yes, two) servers as well...
What were the plans for the server?
... you have two bare metal servers you dont use?
Multiplayer cat platform game?
No, the two minecraft servers through shockbyte. 😛
That are separate from my dedicated server
Some sort of multiplayer server for game projects, websites, maybe an occasional minecraft or terraria server, etc.
It was very much a "there are so many things I could use this for! might as well not get the cheapest option"
oh
Pretty sure I did experiment with some sort of MP SDK on it at some point
But it wasn't really designed in a way that was good for the type of game Iw as thinking at the time (whatever that was)
are we doing crime again
No
aw
Casey is making multiplayer etch and sketch
we are doing online etch a sketch as a discord alternative that devolved into a discord activity ]
it will be on a .github.io domain now
I was hoping for crime
and you will have to buy colours
No crime, only brilliant alernatives to discord
Hush
are microtransactions crime enough
Go crime elsewhere
what is the base going rate for a colour and does it scale based on predicted demand?
What we talked about earlier was like an auction system, and if someone later pays for more than you did then they steal the color from you
It's an auction
jeez you can't have the microtransactions be directly in a real currency
you make a fake currency with a dubious conversation rate and then make all the transactions be just a little bit higher than the nearest package price
You enter the amount you want to pay
Well duh, that's jsut common sense.
but does the starting price change based on the perceived interest
atra laughing is presumably because they haven't played enough mobile games to know I'm describing a real strategy
Don't forget increasingly large packages of virtual currency, with the highest tier says "best value!" and the one below it says "most popular!"
For the initial version no, since we won't have enough user activity to predict trends.
what if there are multilpe different types of currency, none of which are interchangeable and confusingly named
What's the currency called
Unless I hook it up to known survey data of favorite colors or something
sketchlets
it's gems. it's always gems
(First thing that popped in my mind)
join 100 discord servers and rank common role colours
OH no worries on that front, the icon will be gems. Draw with a pencil-y stroke to look etch and sketch-y
..."Join"? Are you implying most people don't have that many servers they're on?
make it pvp and sell single use tokens that let you change someone else's colour
idk
We decided earlier that there will be combat and you can kill someone to steal their color
The combat will be pay to win of course
i mean im in like 198 discord servers
The pvp was to steal color iro
(I don't know how many I'm actually on, too lazy to count and not willing to authorize some random tool to check for me)
thats on just one account, i have 2 more in 100 each with little overlap
Why be in a million distance servers
you should be able to do both
imagine someone buying a colour only to have poopface420 change their colour to neon green
i only know bc i hit the limit
The color is also the user id btw
This gives me an idea: Factions/guilds where you all match in color, and a pvp item can change someone's color temporarily and enable friendly fire towards them so their guild members kill them for you. (Not sure of the reward for this)
does that mean colour theft is identity theft
Yes
emojis
Crime is back on the menu
yes i need all the emojis too
@cinder karma and you dare tell me there's no crime being done here
That's where the auction system stealing comes in
so... so many emojis
If they want to steal someone's color, they'll have to pay me, personally
Don't forget this enables impersonation crimes by having a similar-but-same-from-human-perspective color
I'm not willing to give discord money
Else I would use the knitting discord pretty emoji
If it weren't for my financial situation right now I'd buy you nitro 😛
see I came into this chat to ask you guys' opinion about feeding a merge game's rules into a constraint optimiser but you've out-chaosed me
I don't know what that means but sounds kinda interesting too
Well, I'm here right now, chatting without my ADHD medicine. What did you expect
is there amy chance you could join multiple sketches at once and have to somehow draw on both coherently at once
Sure, why not. WASD for one, arrow keys for the other
Dual wielding
no no the same inputs go to both
Considering how this is a discord alternative... once we get market dominance, discord will have to add pvp, clearly
Server raids, but like, within the rules this time
wasd and arrows sounds way more sensible than real etch a sketch mechanics. why aren't the controls just WS and the up and down arrows. or better yet, WS and a mouse controlling on screen dials
If you want to do four at once, get some DDR pads and use a foot for each of the additional ones
if i get a tom scott emoji keyboard can i play on several hundred at once
and what exactly do you think I'm doing, pray tell /lh
Because I never really learned how etch and sketches control, so I'm just assuming my vague memories are 1 knob = vertical and 1 kob = horizontal
correct
I don't think I've ever seen one in person ngl
You don't join servers for emojis anymore, you defeat servers for emojis
I'm not sure what this is but go for it, just beware of pvp.
Oh, and each screen has to have their own color. So be extra careful
can we get the korean manhua deal
No pls dont
Hmm. I guess my ADHD is just stronger/higher level than yours
every server needs a F to S power rating
tbf I am technically medicated rn they just aren't doing very much
A what
http://tomscott.com - http://twitter.com/tomscott - Here's the behind-the-scenes "how I made the emoji keyboard" video! If you haven't seen the original: http://youtu.be/3AtBE9BOvvk But the thing is, the truth is basically just "I bodged some stuff together". Which gives me the opportunity to tell some stories...
AUTOHOTKEY: http://ahkscript.or...
so a video game is something that you play on a computer
Emoji are in limited supply and thus, implemented via NFT.
Given the whole going public situation, this wouldn't surprise me a lot, to be honest...
Bonus point if they're consumable emoji
So far today I've had a monster and about seven cups of coffee
That's determined by which pay to win things you buy, such as movement speed
i must depart now, i expect a MVP by the morning /s
Oh, and going back to the virtual currency. Using the app longer grants you paltry amounts of currency to give you the false hope of being able to compete properly one day as a free player
Complete with seasonal sales, and powerscaling problems that will quickly make your old purchases obsolete
Might as well add a gacha system too while we're at it
Look my hands aren't shaking
Are they dailies you need to do for minuscule amounts of virtual currency
They're not obligatory, but doing them does build up reward streak to make the paltry amounts slightly more digestible (and promote FOMO, of course)
After a certain point in the app's lifetime, the advanced cosmetics mentioned previously will start having pay to win features slowly added in (only on new cosmetics of course - can't give anything for free, and yes, past purchases count as 'giving for free' since that money was already spent and we need more)
(And by we I mean I. What makes you think I'm sharing any with my employees, we only have unpaid interns around here)
And no, the interns aren't in the credits
Some must be limited edition rewards from events
Of course
Also using NFTs
And those events are not only time limited but quantity limited
And obviously you can buy perks limited to these events to progress faster
Of course, pay to win consumables are the life blood of any live service game/scam communication app
Of course
Once the app gets popular we'll have an esports division and tournaments for the pvp stuff.
Again, very important for a communications app
This will be the default communication app internationally in no time
And these tournaments will be eventually streamed exclusively on the sister streaming app
Which is of course, subscription based
Perfect for discussing state secrets!
However, I will commit to never having any AI (in the sense of today's generative AI) features. I'm trying to scam people help people communicate, not *be evil *
Exactly!
Please, Casey
Spend virtual currency on your favorite streamer to create particles on their cursor/trail during gameplay! Perfect for making your community a part of your stream and obscuring your opponent's vision
You have to manage all communication thoroughly via llm
I'll send the idea over to parallel dimension evil Casey
Everything I say goes through an llm to uncompressed it
And then compression it for you to read
The actual communication part is done by computer vision and machine translated in multiple language before being translated back in the original (auto-detected) language
So, it turns out my idea is exactly what the knobs do. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etch_A_Sketch#Operation
So WASD is a safe abstraction.
However, we'll also introduce a proper knob-based controller to play with that will give you slight gameplay benefits if you play with it, as well as a one time bonus to your account when you use one (this is per controller, meaning once you use a controller on one account, you can't resell it to someone else for them to get the controller bonus on their account).
Multiple controllers, including limited edition versions will special one time and ongoing benefits, will be released over time
Also the technology used for this is from 2007 and marketed as vintage
Pick the one that's perfect for your playstyle, or collect them all for those sweet one time benefits!
I'm so confused
Is this real life
Or is this fantasy
Caught in a...crap I don't know my bohemian rhapsody lyrics
No escape from....
Landslide
What do you mean, this is my Totally Legit Business Plan™️ to fix my financial situation, and also become a bajillionare but use my money for good or something, because I would totally be immune to all that money corrupts stuff even despite my totally-not-predatory monetization of WebAndSketch
mama i killed a man
Ooooooh
(I am slowly looking into webgame server implementation stuff for non-scummy Web and Sketch, but it's going slow due to escalating ideas for scummy Web and Sketch)
Well i need to go to bed it's 3AM good luck with both non-scummy Web and Sketch and scummy Web and Sketch
Thanks, non-scummy version is just a prototype MVP for the scummy version that is important for my financial ascendence
>implying there ever was a plot and not just constantly-escalating madness
For the patterned or animated trails, you must own all the colors being used.
Defeating someone will steal every color currently in use
Animated
Yes. The trail you leave behind will cycle between the colors you select
The patterned ones are similar, but instead of the already placed trail cycling, it's the new colors you're placing being cycled between
Basically the difference between a static gradient and typical way people use RGB PC parts/peripherals
(My desktop case is the typical RGB way, but my keyboard is both - a moving gradient essentially)
Spin off actual game idea: Actually designed to be multiplayer snake like mentioned earlier, but open world and not microtransaction oriented (like, quest rewards and achievements for colors and such)
All I want is to leave behind a train with the colors from my discord icons slowly transforming
If you buy the bigger trail sizes, you can have trails that are more than simple colors. We can make you a custom one that's flowers that you can make cycle between your owned colors (for a price, of course - though you'll qualify for the friends/family discount, I'm not a monster)
careful, nintendo will end up suing you for stealing the amiibo tech
also I got bored and implemented a 2x2 (ironically, this is the name for the ones on a 4x4 grid?) sudoku solver using a sat solver
Nah, this is legally distinct because it's a controller you have to keep plugged in for the benefits (or can only be used once for the permanent ones, which also doesn't apply to amiibos).
Also, it's a controller, which an amiibo isn't. Checkmate
only reason I didn’t do 9x9 is that that would be a lot of typing and I cba
You get bored and make a technically remotely useful thing.
I get bored and make a completely impractical entirely superior discord alternative.
We are not the same.
remind me how a 2x2 sudoku solver is useful
dammit the cnf doesn’t even fit in a message
What if someone breaks into your house and demands you solve a 4x4 sudoku (I reject the 2x2 naming convention) but you can't use the internet, Or Else™️. You'll have a solver ready to go!
Meanwhile, if discord goes down, there are plenty of other discord alternatives out there
but it’s a 2x2 sudoku I can just solve it myself
and I used an online sat solver…
the cnf does fit into two messages but I choose to be nice and not send that wall of gibberish into this channel
You have to do it in 30 seconds. (I don't know how hard these are.)
But you're allowed to find your solver without it counting towards that time, for some reason
c row 1 must have one of each digits 1-4
111 112 113 114 0
211 212 213 214 0
311 312 313 314 0
411 412 413 414 0
here’s a sneak peek at the kind of groundbreaking notation though
well what if someone breaks into your house and specifically prevents you from using all discord-like communication apps and you have to send an SOS signal? but for some reason they don’t recognise your app as a communication app on sight
Hmm. I'd still need a way to get other people to join the room so I can send the signal to.
I guess I could use my developer privileges to join any room even without the password, assuming there are online users. (And if there are, let's hope they'd be ones that'd actually listen/care)
I suppose if once Web and Sketch becomes a ubiqitous communications app that might not be a concern. But then the likelihood of them recognizing my app increases
Hmmmmm
Is duolingo a social media
Anyways
Venmo is. (Relevant video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWFLztKBrLY )

Anyways, I'm just gonna say that multiplaywr snake sounds like a fun game
Sorry, multiplayer snake version was cancelled due to lack of funding / development hell / scope growing too large / sudden downturn in market trends / the one developer with institutional knowledge being hit by a car (darn bus factor!). We hope you understand.
Just make one of those screw removal games instead
Or one of thr ones like this
Walk around collecting money game or smth
I've said this before somewhere, but I really hate those interactive ads
(I may consider a multiplayer snake type thing eventually if my whims permit it)
Clearly I need to buy a .io domain for full simple web game credibility
(I'm sure something like that already exists, though)
Duolingo has been serving me repeatedly ads with the same weird gameplay like that
Like, a grocery store theme, a hotel theme, a farm theme
Why is this sudden popular?
I know fortnite has those types of games too, and Roblox did ages ago at least (15+ years)
Just know that it's not purely a mobile trend 😛
Any US-based Framework owners/order-ers that want expansion modules (USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, etc.) at non-tariff prices can order them from the Framework marketplace now/again.
Unfortunately the $9 is shipping I had to pay for my selection of them took a good chunk out of the savings, but my main concern is that by the time my pre-order ships in June they might be even more expensive if I got them in the laptop order (which is subject to all tariffs, especially on China).
So while I only saved ~$6 (after shipping), I locked in the price of them to not have tariffs applied to them
The non-tariff prices only apply to their current inventory of them, though. See the latest update on the tariff-driven pricing blog post for more info.
The only expansion card I'd want at this point is the ethernet one, and given the price and how it sticks out, I'd rather just use one of my existing USB-C ethernet adapters.
The translucent pink and purple USB-C ones are tempting, but I'd barely ever see them with my 16 so it wouldn't make much sense, sadly.
Yeah I grabbed the ethernet one along with the rest of the ones I'll use more permanently. I don't have any other ethernet adapters so I'd rather have the one that most securely attaches to the laptop, plus since it's technically just a USB-C adapter anyways, I could also use it with other computers (potentially requiring a small USB-C extension depending on port layout, but those are cheap).
Yeah, $39 isn't a terrible price for a USB-C 2.5GbE adapter. Not great, but definitely not terrible if you don't have one.
It's not, but I just couldn't justify one because... well, I can get a fair bit cheaper elsewhere. Probably a worse chipset and a worse form factor (external USB C and all), but for something I just wouldn't use, I couldn't justify it.
I have one like https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/127070092346, seems fine
It being locked into the laptop was worth the small amount extra for me. I also didn't want to pay shipping again in the future just to get the one module, because then it'd be even more of a cost difference.
-# Now if it was a SFP+ port for a reasonable price...
(I say that but my home network isn't even all 2.5G yet let alone 10G)
I feel like I use my physical eternet port once a blue moon but I do really appreciate it when I need it
Otoh my DVD reader has been unused for 5+ years
in a hotel it can be the difference between no internet and a really good connection
I have 2.5G on most things but haven't gotten around to updating my router or moving things to a switch, so it's all 1G bottlenecked atm
It's 25G between my main PC and NAS though with a DAC
I believe they currently have a bunch of expansion card shells for sale for anyone who wants to use them to make anything if you want to fix the form factor
I also don't care toooo much about internet speed at home tbh
atra isn't an epic gamer like the rest of us, playing such illustrious network-dependent games as uh
-# balatro? idk
I would rather make myself suffer outdoors thank you very much
that was supposed to say network dependent
silly swipe keyboard
I use my 1 gbps internet connection to download a steam game every few months and then feel mild satisfaction at seeing a big number
I have not opened steam in a year
And do not intend on opening it again
fake gamer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LV266lV6eOQ xdddddddddddddddddddd
And that's not all! Figma - who makes design and prototyping software - also trademarked the word "Config" and attempted to trademark "Schema".
More from The Lunduke Journal:
https://lunduke.com/
They have a few other questionable trademarks too iirc
I don't really care about my WAN speeds, but I definitely like the 2.5G for accessing my NAS. Still need to pick up a couple more Unifi Flex Mini 2.5G switches to finish upgrading things in various places.
I'm not even a gamer
it says so on the thumbnail yes
how narrowly was the scope of the trademark defined for them to get away with those
I'm guessing affinity's "developer persona" or photoshop's "developer mode" are different enough
wonder how they'll enforce this
or why they even want this
surely protecting this trademark would cost them more than just not doing anything
they did, they sent a c&d to another dev
(Lovable to be specific)
What are they gonna do when the other dev rightfully tells them to fuck off is the question
Depends how much money that other dev has.
Do they:
- give up and go extort someone else?
- take them to court knowing they're never going to be able to defend the trademark
When I read about this last week-ish my understanding was that they were specifically not sending C&D letters since they didn't have a legal leg to stand on. They wanted the letters to come across that way while avoiding the actual language of one. Something about their variant of trademark (a weak one) requiring no one else use the term for so many years before they can claim a more "locked down" trademark variant where they can actually enforce anything.
Either way it's bullshit, though
they definitely sent out a c&d letter
tried googling them, went into a rabbithole of this lunduke person also sucking, now once again contemplating abandoning all technology and living wild in the woods
oh yes bryan lunduke sucks ass
they were interestingly enough my introduction to linux
my condolences
so he wasn't screaming censorship every time a linux project said they were pro-lgbt?
thankfully no
he was just really into the opensuse desktop
which is also weird but I didn't know that yet
he was their marketing person apparently
