My parents have a business and they use my printer for printing invoices and stuff. And, of course... I've had it for like 13 years now.

#

A normal person wouldn't even need to buy a replacement toner cartridge for a printer like this.

#

You would literally just not print enough to use one up, lol

dusty pollen
#

can they... not make a printer please? can we convince them not to?

-# all printers are haunted

sonic mirage
#

I have the same printer (well, the HL-2270DW) and have replaced the toner once. Had it since ~2010.

#

Seeing as how the new toner was much larger than the original it came with and I only replaced it in 2021, I'd say I'm pretty set for the next couple decades

sonic mirage
#

Actually it looks like the toner will probably go bad before I use it all. My stats say I've printed 1238 pages and had 1 paper jam. I have 10762 pages let on this new drum, so I won't even get through the drum before it stops printing well.

#

https://youtu.be/os_fHy1mB_M?t=1041 he talks about not announcing anything for the 16" here, in case you didn't watch the vid (it's a community Q&A from their last event, not a printer product announcement).
TL;DW: They don't announce anything product-wise until they're 100% done and ready, but they have a lot on their roadmap for it.
The next question after is more details on the desktop's memory config, too. There's a comment with timestamps about the other things he answered, too.

Framework's founder answers questions about everything from tariffs to the burning question on everyone's mind...will we make a printer?

This video was recorded at the Framework 2nd Gen Event on February 25th, 2025.

I also have a brother printer

#

A couple generations younger but nearly identical

#

Hilariously, I moved into a shared apartment where two of us had taken the Verge article’s advice

There was somewhat frequent printing to the wrong printer

#

We had basement and attic printers

#

my parents have an HP printer

#

we've not bricked it yet but we hate it

#

these days my dad just prints things off at the office supplies and xerox shop nearby

sonic mirage
#

People ask me what printer to buy to print photos at home and I tell them not to, just go to a store that does it and save yourself the headache of inkjets

safe dragon
#

especially one good enough for photos

sonic mirage
#

I have an ancient HP inkjet/scanner combo that I keep just for the scanner part. It's from before they'd lock down a printer that didn't have ink in it from doing anything else, so I'm able to still scan in documents with it.

#

Manufactured 2005 it says

#

There are some printers where you can buy bottles of the ink to refill tanks yourself from some name brands, but a lot of the time the issue is the ink drying up in the print heads, so unless you're printing at least once a week it's probably still better to just go to the store

cinder karma
#

Modern printers also have a chip in them to stop you from doing that

#

My recommendation is to get the grandparents one of those e picture frames tbh

cyan shadow
sonic mirage
#

Apparently allowing syncing with a Google Photos album is too taxing on their servers (AKA they just want more money)

#

They've since updated the listing to say that adding photos is a paid subscription feature now. Yeah that's not how that works, Nixplay, I already bought it.

cyan shadow

it's technically illegal in a lot of places, even

safe dragon
#

my grandma's old picture frame thing just had an SD card

sonic mirage
#

"Celebrated by Oprah Magazine" wow is that a negative endorsement if I've ever seen one

#

Yeah just get one that has an SD card or at least some USB-accessible local storage. This one I got has local storage but no way to access it without their app.

safe dragon
#

that one didn't even have any way to communicate outside of itself

#

no app, no internet

#

Just a picture frame with an SD card

sonic mirage
#

They keep emailing the account on the frame that we need to update the config but I'm not touching the frame until it stops showing the album we have on there. There's a good chance they didn't set up a way to force update it, so as long as we don't touch it I bet it'll keep working with the current album.

#

5 years-ago me should have checked the AZ listing more thoroughly, but I think it was off of a wishlist and not one I found myself

rotund violet
#

Huh, I have an HP laserjet and it's basically fine aside from the occasional "print job vanished into black hole, need to restart the printer" glitch which might just be a Windows problem.

#

Have had the "low toner" warning for... oh, going on about 3 years now, and still haven't gotten around to actually replacing the cartridge. The replacement is just sitting there, unopened in a cabinet.

safe dragon

my mom's pc seemingly forgets how to connect to her hp printer while nothing else we've tried has ever had this issue. It's also the only windows device though...

there do seem to be a few

I assume there's historical reasons for this but almost all of the ones that still exist seem to be maritime academies

I got my new keyboard, and so far it’s going well, but it definitely does feel like learning how to type again

safe dragon
#

ah went more minimal than the moonlander

#

hope you enjoy

marble jewel
#

I'm still playing around with how I want to have everything configured. It's kind of a double-learning curve because I'm also doing home row mods.

safe dragon
#

what do homerow mods entail? When I googled it seemed to related to regular ol' qmk custom layers

marble jewel
#

I don't know if my typing has always been wrong, but I keep on reaching for the C key and mistyping V.

safe dragon
#

the ortholinear layout fucked me up for quite a while

marble jewel
#

This is what I've got so far for home row mods

#

And I setup a layer for symbols and ten key

safe dragon
#

hmm funky

#

I kinda get the appeal

marble jewel
#

I also setup a gaming layer that I can toggle back and forth between to not have the home row mods since those would fuck up movement

dusty pollen
#

I'm always scared of these new layouts because I touch type but not correctly, I kind of just picked it up over time rather than being properly taught, so I don't really use the home row properly etc

and I feel like if I tried these layouts, the problems with the way I type will suddenly appear SDVpuffersquee

marble jewel
#

I think that's happening to me a bit, I mostly learned how to type "correctly"

#

but the bad habits I do have are becoming more apparent

crystal wren
#

Yeah, I definitely don't type "correctly".

cursive sigil
#

What does typing "correctly" even mean?

marble jewel
#

It's mostly about fingers planted on the home row

#

And the correct fingers reaching out for the keys above/below

cursive sigil
#

Huh, I've never heard of that

safe dragon
#

I took a touch typing course as a young kid cause my parents told me it would be useful to me later in life

marble jewel
#

My index finger reaches for the C key, but for this layout it makes more sense for my middle finger to hit C, and I'm struggling with that

safe dragon
#

I definitely had some funky habits despite the touch typing course

#

which the ortholinear keyboard suddenly no longer allowed me to get away with

marble jewel
#

What do you all hit C with?

safe dragon
#

middle finger

crystal wren
#

Index for me!

#

Alternative answer: which octave? /j

safe dragon
#

in a regular qwerty the c is much further right than it is on an ortholinear board so that one shifted for me

marble jewel
#

Yeah I wonder if middle has always been the technically correct finger, but I've always just done it "wrong"

crystal wren
marble jewel
#

Oh maybe it is just a side-effect of the layout then

safe dragon
#

the right hand kinda aligns naturally with the direction the keys go into but the left hand is in a funky angle if you want to do it "properly"

#

which is part of why a split board is useful

#

or alternatively that microsoft thing with a curve

#

this thing

cursive sigil
#

This is fascinating, i've never thought about which finger goes for what key

marble jewel
#

Another oddity/side-effect is with all this freedom, I'm not sure how far apart I want these to be

#

I feel like I need separate wrist rests

safe dragon
#

I've seen people I know range from having them essentially touching each other to far enough apart for a whole pizza box + a cat

cinder karma
#

Cat SDVpufferheart

safe dragon
#

I place my halves almost against each other pretty much

#

at a pretty significant angle to line up correctly with the arching of my fingers and straight wrists

marble jewel
#

I'm kind of feeling like my arms/wrists want these things to be spread

safe dragon
#

if they deem it so then it has to be done hc_pensive

marble jewel
#

Since I have the ten key layer, I'm making the shift symbols the default replacement for what would be the numbers row. Let's see how this goes...

#

(this will take some getting used to)

safe dragon
#

I do nothing that fancy

#

it's just a tenkey

dusty pollen
#

I'd imagine at least part of my typing bad habits is that I always have long nails SDVpuffersquee sometimes obnoxiously long

#

(they're my natural nails, unpainted, and I keep them clean so it's not gross or anything but I never cared about having them all be the same length and they're very strong for some reason, so like I think they were mostly an inch long like a week ago)

#

my piano teacher used to get annoyed at me about them (they were never THAT long at school but still quite long) and my counterpoint was that we both knew it wasn't the nails holding me back

marble jewel
#

@safe dragon do you put Home/End/PgUp/PgDown anywhere?

safe dragon
#

I do have home and end cause it turns out I need them sometimes

#

crpgs like to use it to refocus on the main character

#

PgUp and PgDown I don't have anywhere I don't think?

#

I could definitely just stop having "Hyper" and "Meh" bound cause I never use them despite their "keybind" potential

#

and the symbol layer while I'm here anyway

marble jewel
#

Yeah, I haven't added those yet until I think about what I would actually do with them

safe dragon
#

huh I didn't even know I had a 0 bound on the bottom row

marble jewel
#

As an experiment, I have left, down, up, right bound to hjkl respectively on a layer to help get me used to vim bindings

Tbh, Khloe, I use the vsc git integration for basic bitch shit

ivory shadow

GitHub Desktop, GitKraken, Fork, ...

cinder karma
#

But if I have to carefully do a merge i do it by command line

#

Or if I need to partial stage

ivory shadow
#

Yeah sometimes all you need to do is commit something and push it and the ide tools work fine for that.

cinder karma
#

I got annoyed at svn for having terrible staging

#

There is also not a .svnignore

ivory shadow
#

I use TortoiseGit. I'm not sure if I would recommend it for someone new, but I like the windows shell integration and I've been using it for like a decade plus at this point.

cinder karma
#

I should learn tortoisesvn

pliant snow
#

I only use git via the command line tbh

ivory shadow
#

Wanna commit some changes? Right click, git commit.

#

Lets you pick and choose files. There's a diff tool if you double click a file. Can commit into a new branch. Basically everything I need for authoring files, lol

#

None of the things it has are the best, but it has everything I've needed and that's good enough for me.

pliant snow
#

I've set up a program in a way that feels like it's a bad design, but I'm honestly not sure if it is

supple ether
#

if you want to do some fuckery with the commit history, then it gets complicated, but basic stuff like commits, branches, etc are all pretty straightforward

though I could see it being intimidating when it bumps you into vi if you don't know how to use it

(I by default set the editor to nano)

merge conflicts are a PITA but IIRC git does have an interactive mode for that

which was "burn it all! delete everything!"

rotund violet
#

I prefer GitExtensions to TortoiseGit. Used to use TortoiseSVN back in the old days but never really liked the way it worked for Git.

#

On the topic of handling merge conflicts, my default strategy is to say "psshhh, screw your changes" and overwrite them all with my own.

supple ether
#

That doesn't work well when you're merging multiple of your own feature branches

thin estuary

There it comes. Now what the hell does $14 PLN even MEAN

They’re mixing two currencies here :|

I assume it’s meant to be $14? That’s literally triple of what I pay right now

I doubt it’s meant to be 14 PLN, as that would be less than what I pay right now (20 PLN)

But yeah. Time to cancel

Not necessarily worth the cost, but I didn't mind buying a lifetime license given the value I get from the server in general.

Of course I did that before the price hike...

I just dislike that if you need to transcode, you essentially need the paid version.

Yeah, the lack of hardware transcodes without the paid version is pretty not great.

You'd be better off trying jellyfin at this point if you're getting into things, I imagine.

And just swapping to Plex if you're having issues with jellyfin.

what does transcode mean in this context?

i kinda assume people just do the ffmpeg needed themselves

it ensures that regardless of the device you're streaming to, the stream will be in a compatible format

Mostly dealing with publishing apps and XCode, but that's like.. everything else. Try to publish an app, get blocked in review. Submit it again, changing nothing, it goes through. Just depends on the reviewer, which is garbage. Then there's XCode, where some "programming" is (was?) locked to doing drag/drop in the interface builder, with no way of rigging many things up outside of it.

#

And those interface builders create incomprehensible XML behind the scenes, having it in version control wasn't even that useful.

thin estuary
#

Pretty sure interface builder was only mandatory for the app splash screen (and you could use a static image instead)

#

Other than that you could have always done this in code

Most of the Swift I did was Swift v1, v2, v3 timeframe, pre-Swift UI, so AFAIK there was no sane programmatic way to build the interfaces back then

I'd like to think there's at least some new content just based on the vibes I get from the teaser + sakurai listed as working on it (why focus on that if it's just a graphics update?)

There's a new frontend sort of thing for the emulator/netplay stuff?

pliant snow

is it mainly just netplay focused

devout vault

Nowadays that is the focus, especially with the periodic tournaments with cash prizes

rain apex
#

Everyone else stopped making handhelds though

rotund violet
#

After Steam Deck, not much point.

rain apex
#

I think their only competition is the various pc hand helds now

rotund violet
#

Well yeah, and a Steam Deck can run most emulators. So you can get a deck and have great emulation of any previous generation plus a lot of modern games, or some proprietary locked-in abortion of a handheld that's mostly just an inferior version of the full console and has a fraction of the games.

#

You're definitely taking a huge risk as a H/W manufacturer if you wade into that market today.

marble jewel
#

I only buy Nintendo hardware for their first party games, so as long as those remain exclusive, I'll probably continue to be a customer of their hardware

#

I don't even consider Nintendo to be a "competitor" to any of the other gaming consoles/handhelds. They're really their own thing.

dusty pollen

yeah, they always felt like that to me too

though then again, like I said, I know nothing about games pffft

It certainly will, but Nintendo has been pretty successful at shutting the popular ones down because of decryption or whatever

What do these 3 things do

cinder karma
#

Today's yak shaving: string interpolation in tcl

safe dragon
# rain apex What do these 3 things do

uh so...
AutoMapper: automatically map an object of type A to a new object of type B with any matching property being copied over
MediatR: basically an in process message bus thing that people often use to implement the "CQRS" pattern
MassTransit: a messaging library primarily used to work with MQTT tools like RabbitMQ

#

all of these are heavily used in API development

ivory shadow
#

As long as they pick the right license I see no issue with this. Making large companies pay for the open source code they use is logical.

#

They've got the money.

rain apex

I vaguely understand the first to be duck typing of some flavor DokkanStare

rain apex

safe dragon
#

yeah that'll do it really

#

all of these are used primarily in enterprise

#

I don't like AutoMapper or MediatR though

rain apex
#

So do u have to use it in current job

safe dragon
#

MassTransit is great as far as I've ever used it

rain apex
#

Similar things at least

safe dragon
#

We do use a mapping library but not AutoMapper cause way better ones exist at this point

#

mediatr I personally just don't see the point of very much even if you do want to implement the CQRS pattern, so nope

#

MassTransit is probably used in the company but not my team

cinder karma
rotund violet
#

I'm fine with dual-licensing in principle if it's released that way to begin with, and many open-source projects are, but the bait-and-switch approach is crap, and seems to invariably happen to projects that are already stagnating.

ivory shadow
#

True, nothing stopping companies using it from making their own forks.

safe dragon
#

or the much more fun strategy of not forking it at all and just fuckin praying it keeps working

rotund violet
#

Yes, that is in fact the most likely outcome for the smaller companies. And then there are the ones with half-assed forks who are simply rev-locked anyway and don't care about new versions.

#

I think if an author is bothered by a large company using their non-GPLed open source code for profit, they stand a pretty good chance of success just asking them for funding to continue - that is, patronage. And if you feel that patronage would introduce negative or perverse incentives, or just put the ultimate prize on your own creative freedom... well then commercial licensing is going to hit you a whole lot harder.

dusty pollen
# cinder karma Late but this sounds like a side gig at best

(it’s a “gig economy” scam that’s common on these job search websites nowadays. It isn’t actually a real job, the link to the “application” will definitely eventually take you to some portal which, best case scenario is set up a bit like uber/mechanical turk but you can actually make some money from by picking up jobs when they’re there, but more likely will be pretty sketchy. The job is also labelled as freelance somewhere else in the listing, and they will be super inconsistent with how much work they give you. I’m also like 99% sure it will end up being a data entry job)

marble jewel

There's also the thing about certain jobs being posted just to create data about applicants, but with no intention of actually hiring anyone

rotund violet

Any of you selfhosters have a recommendation for a good unobtrusive notification/feed component - something that can act as a central lookup for all recent activity but not require Discord or another cloud service, or do obnoxious things like send emails or SMS messages, or require umpteen hours of configuration because it's got 400 other features designed mainly for business use?

#

I've got the monitoring and dashboard stuff all figured out already but what's lacking is the sub-realtime tracking, like being able to look up stuff that happened overnight but has already come and gone.

#

ntfy.sh looks like a possible option but there are a bewildering array of possibilities that all seem way overkill.

safe dragon
#

if at all possible I’d honestly probably just set up my own pub sub mqtt thing with rabbitmq or whatever and use that

#

it seems simple enough to just put together yourself to me

rotund violet
#

I guess, sure, it's simple, but not a project I'm really interested in - setting up a bunch of general-purpose infra that only has one purpose, building the database, web UI, mobile UI...

pliant snow
#

Otherwise, you'd probably have to roll your own thing on top of MQTT would be the "cleanest"

safe dragon
#

fair enough

rotund violet
#

ntfy has a docker container so that's a plus.

pliant snow
#

Yeah, it's dead simple to set up IMO. I just wanted something where I could post events and receive notifications on my phone

#

Actually, I really should clean mine up a bit, I haven't reworked it in a while lol

rotund violet
#

Actually a lot of these options seem to be iOS only. So aside from ntfy, looks like the two main contenders are apprise and gotify, and they look way more complicated.

pliant snow
#

I looked into gotify I think, but decided against it, although I don't recall why

#

My ntfy is actually externally exposed on my cloud server, but it really doesnt need to be, I should move it back onto my home one...

rotund violet
#

Yeah, I've been making a push to "de-cloud" lately. Eliminate dependencies and especially paid subscriptions.

#

Self-hosting has really come a long way since 10 years ago, still requires patience but on the order of days, not months.

pliant snow
#

Which is good. I had some stuff kinda jankily exposed, but I have a better solution + tailscale to access stuff remotely now, so I really don't need ntfy exposed like it is

rotund violet
#

Indeed, tailscale seems like the next step for when I actually need remote access (not there yet, though).

pliant snow
#

I use it 99% of the time just to stream podcasts from my server lol

rotund violet
#

Well there are pretty much only two use cases, homelabs and media centers...

#

(with a whole lot of overlap between the two, mind you)

#

Gotify's desktop UI looks kind of clunky, and all the configuration seems to have to be done in YAML files, maybe that's why it seemed less appealing than ntfy.

#

I guess ntfy.sh does seem the most promising. Hell of a name they picked, I thought it was literally just some halfassed sh script when I saw it.

marble jewel
#

Not quite the same thing, but Uptime Kuma is my self-hosted monitoring solution, and it supports customizable ping endpoints as well as a bunch of different options for push notifications, but it's tailored towards uptime monitoring

rotund violet
#

Yeah, I'm running that + homepage as the dashboard.

marble jewel
#

It can be possibly be your notifications system too with some configuration. I use the ping endpoints for some purposes like that.

#

(ping endpoints combined with cron jobs on my server)

pliant snow
#

I can't say I ever felt my uptime was worth monitoring to that level

rotund violet
#

It has notification options, yes; the idea of ntfy (or other) is to be the "notification aggregator" that groups them all together in one place and in general keeps the system quiet. Don't need to get a message at 3 am because a server went down, don't care, but having a feed that'll tell me "such-and-such has been crashing a lot" when I actually go to check in the afternoon would be nice.

marble jewel
#

In my case, I am sending the notifications to Discord

rotund violet
#

For uptime I just like the monitoring aspect, don't even want the notifications.

#

i.e. if I try to do <thing> involving <container> and it doesn't work, then it's nice to have that uptime page running to confirm that "yes, that failed because <container> has been down for the last 6 hours", but since <thing> is something I only do once a week or less, I don't need to know immediately.

marble jewel
#

Yeah, for me I am depending on Discord as my message aggregator. Which is probably a mistake, but it's something I pretty much always have open to the side.

rotund violet
#

Yup, quite a few Discord bots and while they're certainly impressive in their capabilities, I don't want Discord involved in any self-hosting setup.

marble jewel
#

I considered doing that self-hosted Discord alternative, but decided against it since I would only really use it for that one thing

rotund violet
#

Right. Mattermost I think? Or one of the other clones. There are integrations for those too, but since I'm not actually interested in running a chat server...

marble jewel
#
