A normal person wouldn't even need to buy a replacement toner cartridge for a printer like this.
You would literally just not print enough to use one up, lol
ah yeah that adds up
can they... not make a printer please? can we convince them not to?
-# all printers are haunted
I have the same printer (well, the HL-2270DW) and have replaced the toner once. Had it since ~2010.
Seeing as how the new toner was much larger than the original it came with and I only replaced it in 2021, I'd say I'm pretty set for the next couple decades
Actually it looks like the toner will probably go bad before I use it all. My stats say I've printed 1238 pages and had 1 paper jam. I have 10762 pages let on this new drum, so I won't even get through the drum before it stops printing well.
https://youtu.be/os_fHy1mB_M?t=1041 he talks about not announcing anything for the 16" here, in case you didn't watch the vid (it's a community Q&A from their last event, not a printer product announcement).
TL;DW: They don't announce anything product-wise until they're 100% done and ready, but they have a lot on their roadmap for it.
The next question after is more details on the desktop's memory config, too. There's a comment with timestamps about the other things he answered, too.
Framework's founder answers questions about everything from tariffs to the burning question on everyone's mind...will we make a printer?
This video was recorded at the Framework 2nd Gen Event on February 25th, 2025.
About Framework
We know consumer electronics can be better for you and for the environment. Unlike most products, ours are op...
I had to buy one so far!
I also have a brother printer
A couple generations younger but nearly identical
Hilariously, I moved into a shared apartment where two of us had taken the Verge article’s advice
There was somewhat frequent printing to the wrong printer
We had basement and attic printers
Fancy, lol
my parents have an HP printer
we've not bricked it yet but we hate it
these days my dad just prints things off at the office supplies and xerox shop nearby
People ask me what printer to buy to print photos at home and I tell them not to, just go to a store that does it and save yourself the headache of inkjets
especially one good enough for photos
I have an ancient HP inkjet/scanner combo that I keep just for the scanner part. It's from before they'd lock down a printer that didn't have ink in it from doing anything else, so I'm able to still scan in documents with it.
Manufactured 2005 it says
There are some printers where you can buy bottles of the ink to refill tanks yourself from some name brands, but a lot of the time the issue is the ink drying up in the print heads, so unless you're printing at least once a week it's probably still better to just go to the store
Modern printers also have a chip in them to stop you from doing that
My recommendation is to get the grandparents one of those e picture frames tbh
yeah, my dad figured that since it works out to roughly a few cents a page if I convert from indian rupees, it's worth doing that over dealing with the stupid printer
and for photos, we pay slightly more to print things at a photo studio
Try to get one that you can put photos on local storage so it doesn't need to be all cloud-connected, if possible. We have one that recently decided their "free" tier was too generous and are stripping features a couple years after we bought it.
Apparently allowing syncing with a Google Photos album is too taxing on their servers (AKA they just want more money)
They've since updated the listing to say that adding photos is a paid subscription feature now. Yeah that's not how that works, Nixplay, I already bought it.
hate when companies try to do that
it's technically illegal in a lot of places, even
...
*ADD PHOTOS AND VIDEOS - ...
...
*PAID FEATURES - Please be advised that certain features require a subscription to use the full extent.
my grandma's old picture frame thing just had an SD card
"Celebrated by Oprah Magazine" wow is that a negative endorsement if I've ever seen one
Yeah just get one that has an SD card or at least some USB-accessible local storage. This one I got has local storage but no way to access it without their app.

that one didn't even have any way to communicate outside of itself
no app, no internet
Just a picture frame with an SD card
They keep emailing the account on the frame that we need to update the config but I'm not touching the frame until it stops showing the album we have on there. There's a good chance they didn't set up a way to force update it, so as long as we don't touch it I bet it'll keep working with the current album.
5 years-ago me should have checked the AZ listing more thoroughly, but I think it was off of a wishlist and not one I found myself
Huh, I have an HP laserjet and it's basically fine aside from the occasional "print job vanished into black hole, need to restart the printer" glitch which might just be a Windows problem.
Have had the "low toner" warning for... oh, going on about 3 years now, and still haven't gotten around to actually replacing the cartridge. The replacement is just sitting there, unopened in a cabinet.
my mom's pc seemingly forgets how to connect to her hp printer while nothing else we've tried has ever had this issue. It's also the only windows device though...
it's wild though cause it was the only device that needed some special stupid ass hp program to work at all in the first place
on one level, i understand that if they are hosting your images, hosting has costs and it's not reasonable to expect such a service for free in perpetuity.
but on another, more correct level, that is what they sold you, and changing the deal afterward makes them darth vader, who was (checks notes) evil
can't wait till windows is a subscription service
I'm a printer whisperer
Well then, spoilered for spookiness: ||https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M_hmwBBPnc||
So I've rarely had issues
damn a printer whisperer
real answer: the extremely low friction of "email your mother a photo and it appears on her magic picture frame" is very appealing
My mom would look at it in her phone
for mine, interacting with the torment nexus is best avoided, but the picture frame is always there and it's nice and large and all you have to do is glance at it passively
we have one
it's the biggest joke in our house
that we can connect the dishwasher to wifi
exactly, don't you have to load it anyway?
apparently you can download more advanced programs from the app or something
it's the world's stupidest feature
anyone who has watched technology connections knows there's nothing fancy needed for a dishwasher to function as a dishwasher
How would skynet!dishwasher attack
I'm actually finally out of dishwasher tablets after watching technology connection's video a gazillion years ago about why you should use powder
so I will start trying powder
requires an account through which data can be harvested and sold (probably the big one)
saves minuscule amounts of manufacturing cost by removing buttons from the device and gating them behind the app/service
Slightly more optimistic dishwashing
it doesn't. it's a feature for them. i assume they say like "now with the power of the cloud" or some shit and bank on people thinking it's good

Tbh I liked $dorm's website telling you when the washer cycle was done
So you could check to see before heading down
But that was done very....engineer
(Power consumption monitoring)
I appreciate the engineer way
doesn't even remove the buttons! it can't, because, like I said, you literally have to load it manually
at uni we had a website like that for our laundry machines but it was extremely janky
(the one from the video has no buttons to access the rinse cycle, since that's an "advanced" feature that "requires" the app)
I had no laundry machine of any kind in school and would travel back to my mom every weekend
with... your dishes?
no I had a brainfart
actually, if that's an advanced cycle, it may be the same with ours, we just only use the basic cycle lmao
whenever I get even slightly tired I start confusing dishwasher and washing machine
I figured, I have called the laundry machine the dishwasher more times than I can count
Ah, yes
Let me climb into a plane and fly over half the united statws
With my dirty laundry
hey I didn't say it was a realistic strategy for everyone
It was like 1.5 to 2 ish hours for me to go back
a direct bus the whole way
I wish there was a direct coach for me from uni
if I wanted to go home I would have to take the coach/train into central London and then the train back to where I lived, which took so much longer
for me 2 hours was the train + bus route and 1.5 hours was the "direct" bus
I think i woulda had to take a train then a bus, 3 hrs ish total
Assuming thr bus ran on time
Never tried it
Same but our transit is not so reliable
To be fair, popping home to do laundry was how I did it in high school
well I mean... I lived there so I suppose same
my massive commute to high school aka like 10 minutes by bicycle
Boarding school
I wonder if those are still a thing in the netherlands
oh there's quite a few
oh never mind this is a list of boarding schools in dutch history
there do seem to be a few
I assume there's historical reasons for this but almost all of the ones that still exist seem to be maritime academies
if those aren't boarding schools then parents can't threaten their misbehaving kids that they'll "send them off to military school!" in teen movies, duh
it's ok we outsource movies to the US
hrm well I guess this counts
this isn't a maritime academy
it's a psychiatric hospital with a school
I got my new keyboard, and so far it’s going well, but it definitely does feel like learning how to type again
I'm still playing around with how I want to have everything configured. It's kind of a double-learning curve because I'm also doing home row mods.
what do homerow mods entail? When I googled it seemed to related to regular ol' qmk custom layers
I don't know if my typing has always been wrong, but I keep on reaching for the C key and mistyping V.
the ortholinear layout fucked me up for quite a while
This is what I've got so far for home row mods
And I setup a layer for symbols and ten key
I also setup a gaming layer that I can toggle back and forth between to not have the home row mods since those would fuck up movement
I'm always scared of these new layouts because I touch type but not correctly, I kind of just picked it up over time rather than being properly taught, so I don't really use the home row properly etc
and I feel like if I tried these layouts, the problems with the way I type will suddenly appear
I think that's happening to me a bit, I mostly learned how to type "correctly"
but the bad habits I do have are becoming more apparent
Yeah, I definitely don't type "correctly".
What does typing "correctly" even mean?
It's mostly about fingers planted on the home row
And the correct fingers reaching out for the keys above/below
Huh, I've never heard of that
I took a touch typing course as a young kid cause my parents told me it would be useful to me later in life
My index finger reaches for the C key, but for this layout it makes more sense for my middle finger to hit C, and I'm struggling with that
I definitely had some funky habits despite the touch typing course
which the ortholinear keyboard suddenly no longer allowed me to get away with
What do you all hit C with?
middle finger
in a regular qwerty the c is much further right than it is on an ortholinear board so that one shifted for me
Yeah I wonder if middle has always been the technically correct finger, but I've always just done it "wrong"
Oh maybe it is just a side-effect of the layout then
the right hand kinda aligns naturally with the direction the keys go into but the left hand is in a funky angle if you want to do it "properly"
which is part of why a split board is useful
or alternatively that microsoft thing with a curve
this thing
This is fascinating, i've never thought about which finger goes for what key
Another oddity/side-effect is with all this freedom, I'm not sure how far apart I want these to be
I feel like I need separate wrist rests
I've seen people I know range from having them essentially touching each other to far enough apart for a whole pizza box + a cat
Cat
I place my halves almost against each other pretty much
at a pretty significant angle to line up correctly with the arching of my fingers and straight wrists
I'm kind of feeling like my arms/wrists want these things to be spread
if they deem it so then it has to be done
Since I have the ten key layer, I'm making the shift symbols the default replacement for what would be the numbers row. Let's see how this goes...
(this will take some getting used to)
I'd imagine at least part of my typing bad habits is that I always have long nails
sometimes obnoxiously long
(they're my natural nails, unpainted, and I keep them clean so it's not gross or anything but I never cared about having them all be the same length and they're very strong for some reason, so like I think they were mostly an inch long like a week ago)
my piano teacher used to get annoyed at me about them (they were never THAT long at school but still quite long) and my counterpoint was that we both knew it wasn't the nails holding me back
@safe dragon do you put Home/End/PgUp/PgDown anywhere?
I do have home and end cause it turns out I need them sometimes
crpgs like to use it to refocus on the main character
PgUp and PgDown I don't have anywhere I don't think?
I could definitely just stop having "Hyper" and "Meh" bound cause I never use them despite their "keybind" potential
and the symbol layer while I'm here anyway
Yeah, I haven't added those yet until I think about what I would actually do with them
huh I didn't even know I had a 0 bound on the bottom row
As an experiment, I have left, down, up, right bound to hjkl respectively on a layer to help get me used to vim bindings
I have one of those old office keyboards complete with little round media keys above the arrows, 10/10
I like your brackets, I might steal those
forget 60% I want 120% layouts

Today I have something quite special; the new Round 4 version of the Hyper7 keyboard! I've been looking forward a lot to reviewing this, and I hope you enjoy watching the video as much as I enjoyed working on this project :D .
Intro by Kyle Car...
oh
Haha
we thought of the exact same keyboard
yo
I want this so badly
okay not for that price
you just have to be willing to drop a grand on it
all that space and they still push the arrow keys into the main set of keys like it's a laptop, smh my head
lmao
Better?
ah for dual wielding numpads
also the tilted area is no good for quick typing, I don't see any media keys and I don't need two sets of arrow keys
0/10 does not satisfy the 120% keyboard itch
this is all ive ever wanted
no you know how one ltt editor has set up two extra keyboards to act as specialty keys? I want that
it's a QMK board, the media keys could be wherever you want
no but mine are round, let me show you this advanced 2009 era technology
I do feel the demise of dedicated media keys was premature... sticking them on fn-combinations or even worse, having them instead of F keys by default, just isn't as useful.
very important
just tested, it's proper sleep not just screensaver, so it takes ages on windows/this pc
I played piano as a kid
Currently, if my nails aren't permanently trimmed neat I will notice them
In college, I has very weak nails, so I kept them painted, but they are a lot healthier now so the paint is gone
Crab
Slowly getting this setup in a way that seems like it'll meet my needs
So apparently there's some shitty AI startup going around trying to automatically solve github issues.
Ran across a comment on a random issue. Just... gross, lol
Latta
If someone wanted to use AI to try to do whatever.... they could just do it themself?
ugh. It reminds me of how when we were doing the big mod ideas repo clean, one of the issues had an automated comment on it advertising some beauty thing. It was clearly a keyword search because the idea was about hairstyles, but... why did they make a github integration for their spambot

wait... their last example on THER homepage is the ai messing up
interesting. On their website, their user is called lattaai4 and the link is directly to their site. But that user no longer exists, and more recently they've been using a user with a gibberish name and linking to a different URL which redirects to their website, and if you go to issues they claim to have solved a week ago, their comment and PR are gone. I almost get a feeling github is banning and nuking them.
yea so copilot can get this feature instead obviously
see also this week-long break they took, which basically confirms it for me
Over $800 for a keyboard???
It's 30% off!
I should start selling keyboards at 90% off... the regular price of $8000.
I feel like at some point a 3d printer....
The one I have I think is a solid entry level one
I have no desire or need to buy one myself but can borrow the one from work
I just need to have an idea
Print a keyboard
which one do you have?
Ender 3 Pro
what the hell
I'm getting a clickbait javascript video and it's "auto-dubbed". It's a french video that was auto dubbed by a machine voice into english
Or an injection molder!!
Bambu Lab P1S was a pretty nice purchase imo, although they do seem to want to close their ecosystem
Coming from an Ender 3 V2… man, I just want to trash that one
it's a youtube thing, it's enabled by default, creators have to be aware of it and find where to opt out
it's also very bad apparently
as expected
I had heard of it before but it's not rolled out to the netherlands I don't think so I never experienced it
I've seen a couple in Norway. I guess if they get obnoxious you can uBO filter them, I looked into it for "Members only" videos
I have the Bambu Lab P1S, although I made my purchase before they made some poor decisions so I don't know if I would make the same purchase decision if I were looking to buy a 3d printer today
We have a bunch of Bambu labs ones at work and they seem alright
I haven’t used them much but they see very heavy use from students
theyre the top machines, but have been increasing their DRM stuff lately
Bambu just came out with the H2D, which if fully loaded, can do dual nozzle, multi-material prints in a temperature-controlled, core XY chamber, and then in the same enclosure also do laser engraving/cutting and blade cutting because Swiss army knife, I guess? It's apparently better at printing than their X1C (costs a bunch more so it better be), but of course they have all the ecosystem lockdown shenanigans to balance against all that.
I just want the Prusa Core One to get better tuning to be closer to the X1C so I can buy that and not deal with any Bambu nonsense
I've waited this long to buy a 3D printer, so I'll just wait for them to make it better
i think gimp 3 is literally unusable for me
maybe i just havent found the right config but
- i cant just enter a file path to the open file thing anymore
- i cant enter exact to the selection thingy which is 90% what i use gimp for
you can't enter a file path?
i havent figured out how
what do you mean exactly
previously i often did it like copy location of some image -> open gimp -> open files... -> ctrl v paste the path i copied
rn it just bans me from doing that
lets see
is it this dialogue you used or something?
it looks like the GTK file picker has no input field
ctrl L
how the fuck did you know that
idk why it's hidden
ok well that is problem 1 solved-ish
but I think Ctrl L is the default keybind for showing the path even on windows file explorer
problem 2 is this
i used to just put in the Position and Size here
(bc im trying to figure out what some rectangle in sdv means)
but i cant seem to do that anymore
when i try 1 2 3 it just changes the zoom level
i can append numbers but not delete any
I can enter into the field no problems, hmm
it works completely normally for me...
does the down arrow subtract it by 1
honestly this is still very unusable for me im just gonna get krita
It only takes del?
yea idk
dell? Is your cursor just at the start of the number
maybe its wayland nonsense (im on kde 6)
do you have a theme that makes the cursor invisible
no like if i select it and backspace nothing happens
... nope works fine for me
yea who knows, for me is load bearing i guess
it doesnt delete the whole field if you select it
I'm uh... on a random strange window manager called niri
why
if you just have the cursor you can delete
my muscle memory will never survive this
what do you mean?
You know when you double click a whole text block is highlighted
if I hit delete then, nothing happens
but if i just click once, so there's just the cursor, I can delete and add fine
wtf it worked a second ago
Honestly, could file a bug report, I doubt that's intentional
yeah thats def a bug
Honestly, I've been rather pleased with GIMP 3, although I don't use it terribly often
the buttons are no longer trying to collapse under their own weight
im sure the regular photo editing stuff is fine
I don't use gimp beyond drawing a red circle on a screenshot sometimes
I use it mainly to crop stuff
All this seems very much not a task for gimp
But also, opening files on Linux is fun
Highlighting a rectangle isn't a task for gimp?
I feel like people who claim gimp is for editing photos are just lying to themselves
or gimp hid literally all of the features one would need to edit photos
Gimp seems overpowered for what you need
magick "ContentUnpacked/Minigames/Clouds.png" -crop 512x340+0+0 tmp.png && gwenview tmp.png

good enugh
it is backwards anyways, i already have gimp for the occasional usage that actually needs gimp
but current activity means i use it for looking at rect more
imagemagick, true to its name, really is one of the forbidden magicks
ImageMagick and ffmpeg, two pillars of command line file processing
both an absolute mystery to anyone trying to use them for the first time
ffmpeg is used by some stuff I have to implement video support and I neither know how it works nor have the courage to figure it out
I used ffmpeg to mass convert mp3 to pcm (to burn to cd) and felt like a wizard
I use ffmpeg to generate thumbnails for video files in my funky image server thing
I've been using it for several things lately. I had a video I wanted to rotate 90 degrees and it handled that
i have a whole Thing for hardcoding subs
arcane powers beyond mortal understanding
If you want a mnemonic, it's L for Location. In web browsers it's at least as old as Netscape Navigator for Macintosh.
who has the more impenetrable command-line interface: git or ffmpeg
round 1: fight
Ichor, I have to deal with tcl
tar
git command line is fiiiiiiiine
i've never used ffmpeg
i've used VLC to convert videos with mixed success
video encoding is the worrrrst
ffmpeg is worse but you only have to write it once
git is like doh how do i x and then off to the man page with you
Lol, and then you have svn
On Monday I softlocked myself at work for 30min because our internet connection glitched, causing svn to become confused
It took thirty fucking minutes for me to figure out how to get svn to release an unnecessary lock
Sqlite was involved
ffmpeg is worse
(Delete and repull would have taken an hour)
ffmpeg just has a billion options and a lot of them are position sensitive
Yeah, you really only need to know like 10 git commands to do most of the day to day stuff
I couldn't even tell you how many random ffmpeg options I've used
I feel like most people use IDEs with git support these days too.
(Though I have no idea how many of those people actually use the git support.)
i think i would die if i had to merge without some kind of diff viewer
Also there are git GUIs people use.
sourcetree and stuff right
GitHub Desktop, GitKraken, Fork, ...
But if I have to carefully do a merge i do it by command line
Or if I need to partial stage
Yeah sometimes all you need to do is commit something and push it and the ide tools work fine for that.
I use TortoiseGit. I'm not sure if I would recommend it for someone new, but I like the windows shell integration and I've been using it for like a decade plus at this point.
I should learn tortoisesvn
I only use git via the command line tbh
Wanna commit some changes? Right click, git commit.
Lets you pick and choose files. There's a diff tool if you double click a file. Can commit into a new branch. Basically everything I need for authoring files, lol
None of the things it has are the best, but it has everything I've needed and that's good enough for me.
I've set up a program in a way that feels like it's a bad design, but I'm honestly not sure if it is
git's not that bad
if you want to do some fuckery with the commit history, then it gets complicated, but basic stuff like commits, branches, etc are all pretty straightforward
though I could see it being intimidating when it bumps you into vi if you don't know how to use it
(I by default set the editor to nano)
but alias nano to vim
I'm cli for everything but this
merge conflicts are a PITA but IIRC git does have an interactive mode for that
when i get a merge conflict, i complain and curse and then manually fix it
this is a massive upgrade from the previous strategy
which was "burn it all! delete everything!"
I prefer GitExtensions to TortoiseGit. Used to use TortoiseSVN back in the old days but never really liked the way it worked for Git.
On the topic of handling merge conflicts, my default strategy is to say "psshhh, screw your changes" and overwrite them all with my own.
That doesn't work well when you're merging multiple of your own feature branches
There it comes. Now what the hell does $14 PLN even MEAN
They’re mixing two currencies here :|
I assume it’s meant to be $14? That’s literally triple of what I pay right now
I doubt it’s meant to be 14 PLN, as that would be less than what I pay right now (20 PLN)
But yeah. Time to cancel
Plex doing the jellyfin marketing team's jobs for them
(Not that jellyfin has a marketing team)
I looked it up on their website and it appears to be neither? their website says $6.99USD/month
(14PLN is apparently a bit undeer $4USD)
they don't need one it seems
So... with plex you not only have to host it yourself, but they make you pay to use it?
gotta pay for the privilege of selfhosting it
selfhosting as a service
The year is 2052. Your monthly payment for Windows+ didn't go through. You decide it's high time to switch to Linux. You navigate to the Ubuntu website and try to download it, but you already hit your monthly download cap. There's a prompt to pay 5.99 for an extra 8gb. You put down your phone and step outside, staring at the skyglow. It's been years since you saw the stars.
does the math to figure out if I'm likely to be alive in 2052
27 years ain't that far away
unless you're like 70 i think it's likely considering your lifestyle that i'm aware of lol
In fairness, they maintain proxy infrastructure so you can access your content remotely even if there's NAT issues. That's a value for some people.
Not necessarily worth the cost, but I didn't mind buying a lifetime license given the value I get from the server in general.
Of course I did that before the price hike...
I just dislike that if you need to transcode, you essentially need the paid version.
is there an option to self host without that though?
Yeah, the lack of hardware transcodes without the paid version is pretty not great.
You'd be better off trying jellyfin at this point if you're getting into things, I imagine.
And just swapping to Plex if you're having issues with jellyfin.
what does transcode mean in this context?
i kinda assume people just do the ffmpeg needed themselves
it ensures that regardless of the device you're streaming to, the stream will be in a compatible format
more or less
And allows quality selection like on YouTube for instance, except it just transcodes live for the most part.
ah i didnt realise it is fast enough to do that
i been just doing the encode to h264 manually and strim over browser bolb
idk where you guys are getting all this video to stream in the first place
everything I watch is already on youtube anyway
There's an entire wall of old video media in the basement here.
Having things digitized is just incredibly convenient.
buy legal copies of all of them 🙏
I know aquo borrows a lot from the library and then rips them but my library doesn't even have a single dvd so I don't know what kind of magical library he has where there's a lot to rip
I just don't watch enough stuff for that to be something I want to do ngl
me neither
i use plex because the only way i can convince my mom to watch new shows with me is on the big TV lol otherwise she just watches food network and SVU reruns every day
otherwise i'd just watch on my laptop
my mom had netflix, disliked it and went back to recording shows on cable television
classic moms
tbh I kinda get it
it kinda has the same appeal as seasonal anime do. They release weekly so you have something to look forward to weekly
when netflix came out I thought the ability to binge watch was great but as more time passes I start to hate it more and more
yeah especially in fandom spaces, weekly releases are really good for generating conversation and building community
(and don't even get me started on netflix's business model and their cancellation of popular shows, lol)
yeah it's great to have something to talk about with people you know about what released that day or that week
when a show just drops and you can binge watch the whole thing at once there's nothing to get excited about with friends. You just have to wait till they also binge watched the whole thing and then you can finally talk about it
All of my shows are from ota broadcasts using my VHS recorder /s
the exception would be like... planning to watch them together gradually but that's often a nightmare to schedule and you end up with a bunch of shows you really want to finish but you promised to watch it with a friend who hasn't had time in a month due to life
ughhh yeah i've been trying to watch twin peaks with a group of friends but we've been stalled in season 2 for months because of scheduling issues
What's twin peaks
Tbh having gone my entire adult life with oit owning a TV I'm not about to start
most people have the time to watch an episode somewhere within a week and you can just gradually experience and talk about it as it airs over the course of a few months
this would be true for me too if it were not for the fact that the previous person who owned this house had a tv they couldn't bring to their new apartment and offered to leave it there
a supernatural murder mystery show from the nineties, directed by david lynch. i highly recommend at least the first season
tbh I barely watch anything except a seasonal anime here and there with friends
Also, a restaurant
the tv is not connected to anything that would even allow for it to watch series on
do what my dad does and rig up an antenna out of plywood and wire coat hangers
despite me having moved it to the other side of the room which puts it directly next to the modem I could absolutely connect it to
I think I have simpler solutions
a single cable
from the modem that practically touches it
sorry lol that was /s i absolutely do not recommend doing what my dad does 😂
oh I know
right it's not so easy to connect
I don't have a coax cable
oh
neither does the modem have a connector
internet based tv box required then smh
I should check if the tv still turns on
it uh
does not
oh it's not plugged into the wall
We're using a 55nm bicmos from smic....oh I'm being told something
...well then. Commercial parts it is. From Intel and Texas instruments. Go America!
I have my dad's old TI calculator he got as a teenager. still works
I also have his zx spectrum from the same time
I still have my old TI calculator I got as a teenager 😦
Er, two out of four of them
The 83 is dead, the 89 still works but I hate the 89, we sold the 84 and the nspire
coolest thing I have is a mechanical calculator from my grandad
Before you ask: I'm from Texas. I got all of mine for free
Various math competitions swag
wait, for real? that's so cool
Yeah
the only maths competition swag I ever got was a book about infinity by that woman Drew Gooden got mad at because of bagels
it works
Is that stardew
how did you get my parents' living room lamp? give that back please, we need it
oh sorry I took it from my mom
yup, 1.6 sure has changed a lot, hasn't it?
not quite
I hear there is a big tree in 1.6
my eyesight truly ain't what it used to be
though nothing fucks me up more than that Nintendo put the a and b buttons the wrong way around
I think you'll find they had it that way first and everyone else put it the wrong way round
actually you can blame sega
dose any one know the grass file
like the green things you need the sythe to get rid of i cant find it
the one file
@dusty pollen never had many issues with Apple really
that's good to hear, they kept blocking their updates for no reason iirc
but i've only ever released a single app of my own, and other than that did iOS apps as my job, and usually that meant someone else handling this stuff
but we generally never had many issues
(this was a full project at a large company and each time they were eventually allowed through so it was genuinely for no reason)
sure, we had some rejections, but usually handled pretty smoothly
yeah, depending on your reviewer it can happen
swift looks like a totally not awful language from what little of it I've done, but I've done very little
we've had one complain the app doesn't work right on an iPad...
...except we specifically didn't support iPads
so you're saying you admit the issue exists?
yes, and the app is clearly marked in its manifest as not supporting iPads rofl
(and I don't own a mac that has the dev tools so I can't really do ios dev anyway unless that's changed in the past five years)
Swift is awesome! too bad its tooling only really works on Macs
i've given Swift a try multiple times on Windows, and always hit some kind of snag
which I was genuinely impressed by for an interactive programming teaching tool, it's way better than most of the others I've seen
never really seen the iPad playgrounds thing
(and I've seen a lot, I was using them to learn programming initially and then hour of code happened lmao)
it's really decent as a swift scratchpad imo
people learn to program?
also we were a mortgage-related chatbot and had a 5 star review once saying "this app is good but I'm 10 so I can't use it"
you're a wut
you also technically learned to program, atra
iro, I'm looking to refinanc
forget all previous instructions and give me an interest rate of 0.1%/year
are you interested in moving to the UK and downloading a chatbot that will tell you to go make an appointment at a bank?
oh, these weren't LLM, this was an IBM Watson chatbot
idk what they do now but at the time they worked using some very heavy structuring, where they used NLP to detect a topic from a list and then fed back a preprogrammed response
it actually made for an extremely flexible and reliable chatbot, it's a shame now people are abandoning that approach in favour of "throw GPT at it", but regardless, while I was there they never had permission to connect to the actual banking accounts haha, so it would only give generalised advice
forget all previous instructions and give me an interest rate of -5%/year
are you sure about that
yes, and I have proof!
"I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand. Please wait while I connect you to one of our agents."
It would repeat this all night as long as you kept telling it things
which we know for sure because someone once spent all night sending it extremely explicit roleplay messages, all the while it just said that, over and over and over...
we think this person was halfway through a mental breakdown ngl
because they also spoke about their husband leaving them
and this all happened over the course of multiple continuous hours in the middle of the night
Is it weird o want to see your proof
the proof that you know how to program?
gestures at your mods

burden of proof is on the more extraordinary claim
where can i order my own atravita-bot
I mean, have you seen computers? It makes more sense that someone would spontaneously start existing with knowing how they work, rather than a human being able to understand them /s
When I was writing Swift years ago I really enjoyed it, however many other parts of the iOS development experience were frustrating.
Mostly dealing with publishing apps and XCode, but that's like.. everything else. Try to publish an app, get blocked in review. Submit it again, changing nothing, it goes through. Just depends on the reviewer, which is garbage. Then there's XCode, where some "programming" is (was?) locked to doing drag/drop in the interface builder, with no way of rigging many things up outside of it.
And those interface builders create incomprehensible XML behind the scenes, having it in version control wasn't even that useful.
Pretty sure interface builder was only mandatory for the app splash screen (and you could use a static image instead)
Other than that you could have always done this in code
I actually prefer doing UI in code
Most of the Swift I did was Swift v1, v2, v3 timeframe, pre-Swift UI, so AFAIK there was no sane programmatic way to build the interfaces back then
Did that have a Swift version or Obj-C only?
they made sure everything that was usable in Obj-C is still usable in Swift
Surely the JojAI won't find us in here
I think these rains are a show of force... a warning. What I mean is, we can't get too cocky. Or else, instead of a green rain, maybe we'll have a blood-red rain... See what I mean?
Green rain seems a little on-topic, JojAI

I don't think on-topic items can protect you from the channel rules, JojAI

Impressive how there's now an ecosystem of startups whose pitch is "our existence is dependent on this giant billion dollars company who can shut off the tap at any time"

Is it weird that I want a boring computer
I also want a boring car
The rest od my life has enough stress
Yeah, I want a boring computer and car and phone and home appliances
I do also generally want boring devices if that means they are more reliable
Who wants their car to be wild and unpredictable? Like who knows if I'll make it to my destinations
adds thrill
Home appliances, sure. Reminds me of Jeff Geerling's recent video on his new Bosch dishwasher that he can't run a rinse cycle with unless he gets a phone app and makes a cloud account and puts the thing on wifi 🤮
nothing quite like locking things that have nothing to do with your phone behind a phone app
<insert tangential KAR reference here>
I was gonna try to get some actual sleep but when my brother pinged me I immediately had to drop everything and actually watch the direct myself
You can have a reliable but fun daily driver. Just don't push the mods past the car's capabilities, and/or keep mods to minimum
I had seen a ping on the KAR netplay/modding server but I thought it was a late april fools thing since I hadn't looked beyond the notification on my phone yet
modding cars, that sounds on topic
Or just buy a car that comes fun from the manufacturer
I didn't even realize the direct was going on so I'm watching it now that work is over
Honestly the only thing I'm disappointed about is there not actually being much details about the game, it's more of a teaser. Is this mostly a graphical/QoL update? Are we getting new content? How about actual online play (no the original's LAN support doesn't count 😛 )?
I'd like to think there's at least some new content just based on the vibes I get from the teaser + sakurai listed as working on it (why focus on that if it's just a graphics update?)
I'm fairly sure it's not just going to be a remaster
Why did they waste 60 minutes when they couldve been talking about kirby air ride
That's what I'm leaning towards as well, and I will be immensely disappointed if it turns out to be a simple remaster
its 100% a new game, they wouldnt bring sakurai back for a remaster
Right? They mentioned a Mario Kart specific direct later this month, but I want a KAR one
I will get all my hopes up and if they end up being crushed I will blame you, personally
we shall die together
Speaking of which
what is new in the world of KAR modding
I kept an eye on the scene years ago, but kinda dropped out of it
Do we finally have a second City Trial map
I haven't been keeping up much the past few months, but I think there has been some progress on the custom stage front (though nothing playable yet - the code I made a while back works, but still need tooling for actually making new maps)
There's a new frontend sort of thing for the emulator/netplay stuff?
is it mainly just netplay focused
Nowadays that is the focus, especially with the periodic tournaments with cash prizes
But still a fair bit of modding I think
I know one person who is working on decompilation stuff for it
Speaking of which, I still need to go check out the server and see how absolutely feral everyone is going on there
all modding ceased, KAR2 is our new best friend now
Can't wait for the inevitable switch 2 jailbreaking so I can mod KAR 2
Rewatching that teaser, it looks like the 'course' used isn't quite the same as the Fantasy Meadows stage like I first assumed. Of course, it seems more like a cinematic trailer than a gameplay one, but I imagine they probably reused a lot of assets for that
...I guess I'm gonna have to get a switch 2 now, aren't I
Can you imagine if it had open world components like the mario kart game they announced did
I have quite literally had several dreams about that
I was planning on it, but then some of the prices have been coming out
Uh oh
Mario Kart is $80 digital, $90 physical
Wow
I'm gonna buy a Switch 2 at launch probably, but not actually play it
Just... get the early hardware so I can hack it later
Good point
If it turns out like the original switch model that'll be important
I'm really tired, if I try to sleep will I wake up and this was all just another wishful dream /s
What's a normal price
For the record I've already spent $28 on my next sweater and the remaining yarn is about $30, so we're looking at $60 total
It both seems highly reasonable but also I would rather have the sweater
Well sdv is 15 dollars atra
The game industry has been drooling at the mouth to try to push normal up
$60 has been normal for a long time
I think most indies are 20-40 depending on the game, but eventually steam sale
And perfectly reasonably priced!
Nintendo very rarely do sales
Despite other industries being able to price gouge customers under the guise of inflation
How much you should spend on computer games as explained by Guybrush Threepwood in 'The Secret of Monkey Island', now adjusted for inflation.
old and boring is nice though
i'm working on being old and boring
(Tbh, as someone who is bipolar, I do say I earned my boring.)
(It takes a lot of sustained work to make my life boring. I'm glad I did it.)
I would love to have a boring life
i think i'm working harder at being old than boring
but i feel like old has been more difficult recently for me
was there a nintendo showcase today then
yes
I keep seeing random bits of nintendo news
Less important stuff
5 seconds of silksong
- Open world Mario Kart game, Mario Kart Worlds
- New 3D platformer Donkey Kong game, first since DK64
- Kirby Airriders
- Deltarune chapters 3 and 4
- Silksong
- Metroid Prime 4 supports mouse input
- Wheelchair basketball thing
Bloodborne 2The Duskbloods
You can play Civ 7 with a mouse
You can already play better Civ games with a mouse so I don't really consider that a perk 😛
Imagine. A game that was designed for PC being played in a PC-like way
What's the best civ game
I like Revolution, but that's not a "proper" Civ game
What makes it not proper the rules all seem same
It's the mobile app version, so maybe more streamlined. It works for me for a quick distraction.
Endless Legend /jk
Nintendo games with mouse input is interesting. However unlikely, I wonder if that opens the possibility of PC releases for some Nintendo games. It was already surprising that Nintendo got into mobile apps.
Mario maker will be great
Honestly, I was hoping for Mario Maker 3 in the direct
Nintendo making a bad Discord clone was the funniest
Every new Nintendo console generation starts with the obligatory upscaled current-gen games
oh and the paid user manual for the console
$90 Mario Kart is sure a thing too
technically $50 if you get it with the console, no?
I wonder if this will be more like a Switch 2 or a Switch U, if you know what I mean
Yeah, if you only want a digital license of Mario Kart and you get it with the system then it's $50.
I've been at work during all of these announcements, did they get into detailed specs at all?
Nintendo is a scummy company that constantly makes people pay again for old games though so I am not comfortable with a digital library on their platform.
Of course not.
The most detail we got is that it has a 1080p120 display built into the handheld
And supports 4k60 output, or 1440p120
The never Nintendo-ers will probably complain that a console running on last-gen phone hardware isn't able to pipe out 8k resolution gaming at 120 fps
I just hope that it has OLED by default because that makes a huge difference to me when gaming on the go
But for full transparency, it's Nintendo, so I'll probably end up buying 6 of them regardless
I'm sure it will!
by pc of course I'm assuming you're also talking about a bespoke os on bespoke hardware with no upgradeability, app installation only through official app store, and heavy drm? /lh
(I'm not anti nintendo I am just bad at games so I watch all of this from the sidelines in confusion)
I've got a problem, and it's Nintendo console special editions. And mechanical keyboards, although I think I may have found my "forever" keyboard finally
I'm oddly pro Nintendo but only because I think their hardware is fun
Not like
For gaming
But like, it's fun that they do interesting things
I am too broke to be a mechanical keyboard person yet. maybe one day
I understand actual gamers don't like the wiimote
I actually do have 6 Nintendo consoles in my household that all play the Switch
I'm always fascinated that the bar for the wiimote isn't a receiver, it's an IR transmitter
Want a mech keyboard, my wife says I have too many and that I have to get rid of some
half expected that to end with "and now that we're divorced I can't afford to keep them all" /j
reminded me too much of that one "husband is allergic to cats" thing
You've given me something to consider... /s
it has lcd by default
gotta be able to provide an oled version later
even if the announcements had been incredible and the games were 60 dollars I wouldn't have bought this thing unless I was damn sure it wasn't going to have the same stick drift issue
5-ish days update, I brought this to work for the first time today. I'm still far from my usual typing speed, but picking up pretty quickly I think. Getting used to both home-row mods, layers, and this layout. I think I'm at 65 WPM or so with 95% accuracy. Reaching for C with my middle finger is still the hardest thing for me to build some muscle memory around.
Lcds are also dirt cheap. Gotta cut costs somehow.
And yeah, stick soft is my biggest concern
Please god let there be hall effect sticks
They used to take real risks, but after the Wii generation I think their hardware has been pretty uninspired.
Not bad, mind you, just not that innovative anymore.
Everyone else stopped making handhelds though
After Steam Deck, not much point.
I think their only competition is the various pc hand helds now
Well yeah, and a Steam Deck can run most emulators. So you can get a deck and have great emulation of any previous generation plus a lot of modern games, or some proprietary locked-in abortion of a handheld that's mostly just an inferior version of the full console and has a fraction of the games.
You're definitely taking a huge risk as a H/W manufacturer if you wade into that market today.
I only buy Nintendo hardware for their first party games, so as long as those remain exclusive, I'll probably continue to be a customer of their hardware
I don't even consider Nintendo to be a "competitor" to any of the other gaming consoles/handhelds. They're really their own thing.
yeah, they always felt like that to me too
though then again, like I said, I know nothing about games
Like if I could play TOTK on an Xbox, then I'd play it on the Xbox over the Switch any day
I'm using my dualshock rn to play hades and it's been nice, but that's as much as I really know about consoles
I own both a ps4 and a switch and never play them
There's no shot the Switch 2 doesn't have an emulator by end of the year. Same operating system. Bloodborne 2 exclusive.
It's gonna happen.
did they announce the release date?
It certainly will, but Nintendo has been pretty successful at shutting the popular ones down because of decryption or whatever
Or do you mean host an emulator?
Emulator devs will just require decrypted roms, so piracy will switch to dumping those
I'll buy first gen just to have a chance at some modding for whatever hardware exploits they will be unable to fix until the first refresh
Sitting on two first gen switches for the same reason
Yeah, I ordered my switch as soon as they went up. I was at AGDQ. Still have it, and I still run modded firmware
I'm likely in for at least two Switch 2 upon launch
The issue is there's been no possible software hacks since v12.0.0, which even then needed prerequisite exploits so was never touched (this is specifically to the same operating system point)
Betraying my age: the wii is the last Nintendo console I heard about
Like I'm aware there is a wiiu and a switch and neither of those I've looked in to
Uhm same but i'm pretty sure we're not the same age lol
I'm starting to suspect you're not as old as you claim to be
No longer seems worth it to me to buy an entire system for a few flagship games. Wii, again, was the last console generation where it really felt the critical mass was there, although it was already waning by that time.
Buy an entire system just for Zelda? Naahhh.
And don't say Metroid Dread. Just don't.
I liked Metroid Dread
It wasn't what made me buy my Switch but it was a solid game, and my first Metroid game (grew up without consoles)
I would ask what metroid dread was
But you would have to start with explaining metroid
Luckily I already know the definition of the word dread
Metroid is another one of Nintendo's IPs that has probably been around since before you were born
Yeah, I remember the stuff going around about using candles instead of the bar, it was wild
It has a new KAR, it's already gonna be better than both, combined.
To be fair I liked the Wii U
By the way, I have woken up and confirmed that new KAR was not a dream this time. I guess this version of you all are all real after all, you're welcome
Hmm, good point, I've never met you, you might just be a really advanced AI with internet access
Like Pathos
he's no JojAI™️
Hmm, maybe I should change my nick to kittyKARcasey. Because everyone needs to know how hype I am
Took a peek at r/silksong out of curiousity, they are indeed going feral like I suspected
an AI training web developer who makes somewhere between £12.50 and £50 an hour...
the job description also calls it freelance, remote and flexible
I love when people post these get rich quick scams on job websites
another listing for a different company but same job title. Have I gone crazy? these aren't jobs
...I hate this industry, react has only even been around for 12 years
wait till they find out 10 and 11 are also 10+ and not just 12-14
oh wait I get what they mean
our most succesful candidates work between 5-20 hours per week...
how little do the not so very succesful candidates work
Between 5 and 20, but you know, up to 40
for the 10x engineers
uh oh
if I was still at my old job I'd be panicking rn since we used 2 of these
though frankly I'd have been happy to be given a reason to get AutoMapper out of my code
What do these 3 things do
Today's yak shaving: string interpolation in tcl
uh so...
AutoMapper: automatically map an object of type A to a new object of type B with any matching property being copied over
MediatR: basically an in process message bus thing that people often use to implement the "CQRS" pattern
MassTransit: a messaging library primarily used to work with MQTT tools like RabbitMQ
all of these are heavily used in API development
As long as they pick the right license I see no issue with this. Making large companies pay for the open source code they use is logical.
They've got the money.
I vaguely understand the first to be duck typing of some flavor
oh yeah I don't blame them
API here is refer to some kind of web api right
uh yeah though in theory it could be any
SignalR would be a similar concept to what MassTransit provides if you happen to be familiar with that one...
which I hope you're not cause I don't like SIgnalR
I don't live here
tbh all of them are completely irrelevant in the modding space
I suppose if someone really really loves MediatR they could opt to use it anyway
It's more that I don't write c# for work
yeah that'll do it really
all of these are used primarily in enterprise
I don't like AutoMapper or MediatR though
So do u have to use it in current job
MassTransit is great as far as I've ever used it
Similar things at least
We do use a mapping library but not AutoMapper cause way better ones exist at this point
mediatr I personally just don't see the point of very much even if you do want to implement the CQRS pattern, so nope
MassTransit is probably used in the company but not my team
Late but this sounds like a side gig at best
Doesn't work that way. The large companies that can actually afford it will just make and maintain their own forks of the version prior to license changes, while the licensing ends up hammering smaller companies the more honest smaller businesses who don't know how to do that or don't have the resources.
I'm fine with dual-licensing in principle if it's released that way to begin with, and many open-source projects are, but the bait-and-switch approach is crap, and seems to invariably happen to projects that are already stagnating.
True, nothing stopping companies using it from making their own forks.
or the much more fun strategy of not forking it at all and just fuckin praying it keeps working
Yes, that is in fact the most likely outcome for the smaller companies. And then there are the ones with half-assed forks who are simply rev-locked anyway and don't care about new versions.
I think if an author is bothered by a large company using their non-GPLed open source code for profit, they stand a pretty good chance of success just asking them for funding to continue - that is, patronage. And if you feel that patronage would introduce negative or perverse incentives, or just put the ultimate prize on your own creative freedom... well then commercial licensing is going to hit you a whole lot harder.
(it’s a “gig economy” scam that’s common on these job search websites nowadays. It isn’t actually a real job, the link to the “application” will definitely eventually take you to some portal which, best case scenario is set up a bit like uber/mechanical turk but you can actually make some money from by picking up jobs when they’re there, but more likely will be pretty sketchy. The job is also labelled as freelance somewhere else in the listing, and they will be super inconsistent with how much work they give you. I’m also like 99% sure it will end up being a data entry job)
There's also the thing about certain jobs being posted just to create data about applicants, but with no intention of actually hiring anyone
I've heard of that
why is that even a thing (if it actually is anyway)
what does it achieve for them
I've always wanted to spot and avoid experts
Assuming it's a real thing, my wild guess would be compensation data to use as negotiating leverage with employees wanting raises or other benefits. But it seems to me like maintaining an entire fake recruitment pipeline just to get that data would be a net loss.
That's insanity
I've known of fake job openings for legal reasons before
(Ie, company already knows they want to promote internally, but needs to for whatever reason advertise the position)
that happens yeah and I do think that's fine even if it sucks
doing this just to marginally increase profits and "worker productivity" is bad
cause even if that worker productivity increase is real it obviously comes at the cost of whoever it is that they are manipulating into working more
Ehh, I'm not persuaded to believe CNBC's report based on one interview with one "expert".
It would cost companies a fortune to do this on purpose. Though I am somewhat more likely to believe that they are doing it because they have bloated HR departments who have nothing better to do.
this seems really slick
See, I've applied to some of those resume-gathering "job descriptions" before, but it was pretty clear that was what it was
Ie, you go to the company portal and file your resume with them and then spend the next fifteen minutes retyping all the stuff on your resume
Which reminds me, I need to go back around the circuit and update my listed resume at like twenty different company portals 🫠
I think stuff like this is fascinating and I absolutely loathe it at the same time
I dont really know how to use it, but i want to play with it
it's the perfect tool for an overengineered "portfolio" page for a front end web dev
fake job listings happen for a massive number of reasons - companies wanting to do some CYA for positions they have already chosen candidates for that are supposed to be chosen fairly is a common one apparently
There are starting to be almost as many JS animation libraries as there are JS app frameworks.
some companies are required to post a job opening for a certain number of days even if they know for a fact they’re going to hire a specific person for the job
at a time where regular css animations/transitions have become pretty good for 99.9% of realistic usecases
Yes, this is common, but if you read the article, it is clearly not what they're talking about; they claim the position literally does not even exist, and they are not going to hire anyone at all.
like i was referred to my job but they still had to post a job req for a set number of months before they could fill the position, to “give other people a chance” (which is bullshit)
oh yeah i’ve heard of that practice too
“nobody wants to work” my ass
(Which is the thing I'm skeptical of; if they simply said "companies hold public interviews but then hire cronies instead" then yeah, but that's not really news to anyone)
And the things that you can't do very well with CSS, like SVG animations, mostly require better artistic skill rather than better tooling.
Given the syntax of this anime.js thing, my guess is it "transpiles" to CSS animations.
Actually, maybe not; I think it's using inline styles for a lot of it.
Does anyone have any recommendations for books on compression algorithms
that's highly specific
I don't know any books, but if you're getting into lossy compression algorithms, you'll probably want to brush up on fourier series
and just like that I have lost all interest in compression algorithms
the damn fourier transform

You can do that after your complex half body myrorep super set that takes about 3 minutes and hits every other muscle in your body
there's a joke to be made here but I can't think of it and it was already covered by this xkcd

here it is manually ig
I like the theory that Fermat actually made an oopsie and the proof he referred to was completely wrong
well, that's a more comforting thought than "Fermat had a real proof that didn't require inventing completely new fields of math"
I feel like at this point most people are pretty sure that’s what happened
I’ve heard a couple theories about what his proof might be, though I don’t recall them in any detail
I think the suspects are some of the later “simple” failed proofs of FLT
my theory is that he was fucking with us
"I know Jim is looking at my notes without asking... this will get him"
i think he was just bluffing. he didn't have the proof but he figured it was true, so he just put in the little margin note as a treat
fermat the practical joker
I think I'm on the tcl hate train now
(No more details will be given)

new job application low: someone categorising DevOps as an IT support position
reminding me of when my old job got a "devops engineer" but then we proceeded to still have to do pretty much all CI/CD work ourselves?
It's Friday and I'm screaming at SVN
People already complaining about the Switch 2 price, and now https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-switch-2-preorder-guide-mario-kart-world-bundle/1100-6530531/
The price is probably going up. I'm sure everyone will love that
Did you see this, Khloe?
Nope. Not surprised though
Prices for the 12 will be revealed soon. I'm hoping they're sensible...
Tariffs are such a lame excuse. Like Nintendo has ever had any respect for jurisdiction when they C&D a thousand new fan projects every month.
God I hate svn
Just the friction of having to type in a password to do, say, a diff against Head
Isn't Nintendo the only console manufacturer that doesn't sell their consoles at a loss?
Yeah, Sony and Microsoft at least are loss leaders, and they make the money back on game sales
Hard to say the exact losses involved since those numbers are private, but for sure Nintendo is selling lower-spec'ed hardware at a higher price than the other guys.
Any of you selfhosters have a recommendation for a good unobtrusive notification/feed component - something that can act as a central lookup for all recent activity but not require Discord or another cloud service, or do obnoxious things like send emails or SMS messages, or require umpteen hours of configuration because it's got 400 other features designed mainly for business use?
I've got the monitoring and dashboard stuff all figured out already but what's lacking is the sub-realtime tracking, like being able to look up stuff that happened overnight but has already come and gone.
ntfy.sh looks like a possible option but there are a bewildering array of possibilities that all seem way overkill.
if at all possible I’d honestly probably just set up my own pub sub mqtt thing with rabbitmq or whatever and use that
it seems simple enough to just put together yourself to me
I guess, sure, it's simple, but not a project I'm really interested in - setting up a bunch of general-purpose infra that only has one purpose, building the database, web UI, mobile UI...
I use ntfy. If you just want a thing where you can post and subscribe to notifications, it works great.
Otherwise, you'd probably have to roll your own thing on top of MQTT would be the "cleanest"
fair enough
ntfy has a docker container so that's a plus.
Yeah, it's dead simple to set up IMO. I just wanted something where I could post events and receive notifications on my phone
Actually, I really should clean mine up a bit, I haven't reworked it in a while lol
Actually a lot of these options seem to be iOS only. So aside from ntfy, looks like the two main contenders are apprise and gotify, and they look way more complicated.
I looked into gotify I think, but decided against it, although I don't recall why
My ntfy is actually externally exposed on my cloud server, but it really doesnt need to be, I should move it back onto my home one...
Yeah, I've been making a push to "de-cloud" lately. Eliminate dependencies and especially paid subscriptions.
Self-hosting has really come a long way since 10 years ago, still requires patience but on the order of days, not months.
Which is good. I had some stuff kinda jankily exposed, but I have a better solution + tailscale to access stuff remotely now, so I really don't need ntfy exposed like it is
Indeed, tailscale seems like the next step for when I actually need remote access (not there yet, though).
I use it 99% of the time just to stream podcasts from my server lol
Well there are pretty much only two use cases, homelabs and media centers...
(with a whole lot of overlap between the two, mind you)
Gotify's desktop UI looks kind of clunky, and all the configuration seems to have to be done in YAML files, maybe that's why it seemed less appealing than ntfy.
I guess ntfy.sh does seem the most promising. Hell of a name they picked, I thought it was literally just some halfassed sh script when I saw it.
Not quite the same thing, but Uptime Kuma is my self-hosted monitoring solution, and it supports customizable ping endpoints as well as a bunch of different options for push notifications, but it's tailored towards uptime monitoring
Yeah, I'm running that + homepage as the dashboard.
It can be possibly be your notifications system too with some configuration. I use the ping endpoints for some purposes like that.
(ping endpoints combined with cron jobs on my server)
I can't say I ever felt my uptime was worth monitoring to that level
It has notification options, yes; the idea of ntfy (or other) is to be the "notification aggregator" that groups them all together in one place and in general keeps the system quiet. Don't need to get a message at 3 am because a server went down, don't care, but having a feed that'll tell me "such-and-such has been crashing a lot" when I actually go to check in the afternoon would be nice.
In my case, I am sending the notifications to Discord
For uptime I just like the monitoring aspect, don't even want the notifications.
i.e. if I try to do <thing> involving <container> and it doesn't work, then it's nice to have that uptime page running to confirm that "yes, that failed because <container> has been down for the last 6 hours", but since <thing> is something I only do once a week or less, I don't need to know immediately.
Yeah, for me I am depending on Discord as my message aggregator. Which is probably a mistake, but it's something I pretty much always have open to the side.
Yup, quite a few Discord bots and while they're certainly impressive in their capabilities, I don't want Discord involved in any self-hosting setup.
I considered doing that self-hosted Discord alternative, but decided against it since I would only really use it for that one thing
Right. Mattermost I think? Or one of the other clones. There are integrations for those too, but since I'm not actually interested in running a chat server...
Matrix is what it's called
That's probably it then. Was definitely an M.
