I believe that's only when there's an electron update

#

wait is that what it's called

#

it sounds wrong

austere comet
#

The only discord notification I can ignore without a problem is discord telling me at the top I don't meet it's system requirements and may stop getting updates (discord the page you link me to says the minimum windows version is win10 and that's what I have what more do you want from me)

safe dragon
#

it is called electron. I doubted myself there

fleet wren
#

I hate it tbh, like "what changed Discord, you still don't have audio screen sharing after seven fucking years"

hard cradle
#

im gonna be honest i am not the most observant for new features unless its a big one so idk since when the emojis are there lol

pliant snow
#

yes... official discord on linux... thats what im using...

safe dragon
#

discord is still using a version of electron that doesn't support Wayland as well

pliant snow
#

oh i thought it was native wayland now

safe dragon
#

I don't think so?

pliant snow
#

whats the JS console command that says

fleet wren
#

still XWayland

safe dragon
#

alternative clients are...

rain apex
#

I tried to do funny pipe business to share audio

#

It was succ

safe dragon
#

unlike the good old days

#

I've tried wiring the audio of an application through my mic but it's funky and desynced

rain apex
#

it also got subjected to noise cancelling

pliant snow
#

oh yeah, this third party one is also xwayland

#

Part of the reason I switched to pipewire was because it was easier to pipe audio to discord lol

rain apex
#

lets start an IRC

#

and move there once discord explods

safe dragon
#

I disable noise canceling anyway cause I use a noise canceling filter already on the microphone itself through easyeffects...

pliant snow
#

easyeffects intimidates me

safe dragon
#

also disable echo cancelation cause I swear that's been fundamentally broken on Linux for years

fleet wren
#

ah easy effects, installed that the other day and currently trying to make it so I sound like Chronos from Hades 2

safe dragon
#

when I enable echo cancelation it just deletes my voice

prisma flume
#

how does forwarding work

fleet wren
#

(not a very successfully endevour cuz I dont know what I'm doing)

pliant snow
#

the real crumble died years ago, you are just the echo of who he was

#

what do you mean by forwarding

safe dragon
austere comet
#

The feature us labrats got?

prisma flume
#

i can forward messages between channels and servers?

#

how does it handle permissions

austere comet
#

How does it handle x person not being in the same server the original message is from SDVpufferthinkblob

violet gale
#

oh that's true

prisma flume
#

like can i forward from secret woods here to people who can't read it

safe dragon
#

I think it just forwards it with just about as much care as if you copy pasted the message manually with some nice markdown

rain apex
pliant snow
#

Youre talking about IRC bridges?

violet gale
#

weird

rain apex
#

do u see the source server on this

violet gale
#

nope

safe dragon
#

no

pliant snow
#

oh wtf is that

rain apex
#

ig it only shows if u r in the seaver

violet gale
#

i see the image at least

safe dragon
#

it just copies the contents with some nice markdown and that's it

fleet wren
#

it shows the message but not the source yeah

prisma flume
violet gale
cinder karma
#

Whoolk

pliant snow
#

oh wtf

#

thats a built in discord feature

austere comet
violet gale
#

that's neat SDVpufferthinkblob

pliant snow
#

Testing

prisma flume
#

screenshots aren't copypastable etc though so very bad

#

i hate text screenshots 😌

safe dragon
#

I'll resist sending a text screenshot

violet gale
prisma flume
#

now you can forward a text screenshot!

pliant snow
#

why would i want this

safe dragon
#

and then screenshot the forwarded text screenshot

#

to forward things

violet gale
#

circular logic

pliant snow
#

discord wants to be email

prisma flume
#

how do i cc people

pliant snow
#

Can I...

rain apex
#

oh if i delete the original message the forwarded stays

violet gale
#

you can now send someone into a whirlpool of forwards

rain apex
#

how terror

pliant snow
prisma flume
safe dragon
#

yeah I think it's not in any way linked to the original message once forward

pliant snow
#

I forwarded back the forward

prisma flume
#

oh wow i see that

safe dragon
#

deleting or editing does not affect the forwarded message

prisma flume
#

i havent been to that server in a while SDVpufferfush

pliant snow
#

So its

#

basically copying the message

#

then reposting it with your account

safe dragon
#

with some nice markdown yes

rain apex
violet gale
#

uhhhhh

pliant snow
rain apex
#

well it doesnt really say who even posted the original

violet gale
#

wait will it bonk the masked links, i gotta test for the junimos, goodbye if i get bonked

prisma flume
#

so now if someone forwards a message you wanted to hide it's just owned by them now? and you'd have to ask them to remove their forward

pliant snow
#

fuck it keeps moving the window

#

i wanted to see if you could bypass slowmode lol

rain apex
#

yea that is kinda cursed

violet gale
#

thank you junimo, yo udo in fact at least get bonked for masked forwards

prisma flume
#

i don't like this new feature much haha

pliant snow
safe dragon
#

I'd hope they weren't idiots and made sure the censors apply to forwarded messages

pliant snow
#

It actually won't let me send that into channels where images are disabled

safe dragon
#

they did a decent job for once

prisma flume
#

i'm surprised images are enabled in programming chat. you'd think it'd look like a text editor in here

safe dragon
#

we need to be able to share memes shitting on Javascript and python

prisma flume
#

this must be some kind of visual studio

pliant snow
#

so thats what that means

prisma flume
#

and we're the community....

pliant snow
#

oh i can forward stuff to users

#

im glad they were working on this instead of audio screensharing

rain apex
#

oh are reacts kept

violet gale
#

my side buttons are now huge, it was already obnoxious on mobile

prisma flume

prisma flume

or what

pliant snow

speaking of old timey

#

i found an audio player in linux that supports winamp skins lol

im having a great time

ivory shadow

Winamp skins were peak

pliant snow

violet gale
#

aw hell yeah gotta pull up the old anime skins

pliant snow
#

its entirely anime images from the 90s

violet gale
#

i wonder if the one i used is there

rain apex
#

and mr bean

pliant snow
#

ngl they werent designed with 1440p in mind

#

but i still like it

cinder karma
#

What is this

#

What is winamp

prisma flume
#

is the media player actually good, or do you just want winamp skins lol

pliant snow
#

winamp was a very popular music player in the 2000s

#

i mean

fleet wren
#

how are you old and not familiar with winamp

pliant snow
#

it plays audio, idk what else i want it to do

#

it has a visualizer

#

thats basically all the features

cinder karma
pliant snow
#

it was super duper popular

#

people made their own skins

#

manly of anime characters

violet gale
#

i am still trying to find the 1 skin i used as a kid

#

WAIT

cinder karma
#

Oh no people are typing

violet gale
#

nope that's not it

safe dragon
#

the source code of winamp was published on github recent and it was a giant mess of copyright infringements, a fundamentally broken license and all sorts of fun stuff

cinder karma
#

No idea what winamp is

safe dragon
#

ur winamp

pliant snow
#

I just said it!

fleet wren
#

we are all winamp on this blessed day

pliant snow

maybe im shadowbanned...

cinder karma
#

Zero idea

sand frost
#

I’m confused about how a music player has skins

pliant snow
#

you had to be there

violet gale
#

the 90's were a wild time

rain apex
#

what about the funny sound effects

safe dragon
#

back in the good ol days everyone tried to skin anything

pliant snow
#

i dont think it did sound effects

#

but i dont recall

violet gale
#

me, constantly fixing my dad's computer because he wanted something off of limewire, his msn constantly getting hacked

prisma flume

even windows media player came with like half a dozen skins lol

pliant snow

i do remember AOL of all people bought them out lol

prisma flume

pliant snow

its quite underwhelming these days

safe dragon

macs don't let you express your individuality

violet gale

i have finally found the skin

I wasn't allowed unsupervised computer time in 2002

violet gale
safe dragon

you can recreate it

prisma flume

i'm in awe at the amount of 90s anime skins on webamp

violet gale

you think i was unsupervised? my computer was right next to my dad's until i was like, 10

i remember going to a birthday party in like 1999 and a girl got a bunch of these

it was like high tech

fleet wren

speaking of old-ass players anyone here used XMPlay or is it just me

violet gale

pliant snow

this does mean theyve officially added ads tho

#

its only a matter of time

cinder karma

Hell

#

If I did my math right I wasn't allowed computer time in 2002

What is xmplay

violet gale

what the hell was 2002, what was i even doing? i think i was trying to play an everquest private server

safe dragon

I was 5 and playing PokƩmon yellow on an emulator

prisma flume

looking thru the winamp skins list i'm shocked. shocked that they're all just background images and colour themes instead of whatever windows media player let you do

pliant snow

I was 10 and playing pokemon yellow not on an emulator

fleet wren
# cinder karma What is xmplay

it's a music player that mainly plays these things:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_tracker

A music tracker (sometimes referred to as a tracker for short) is a type of music sequencer software for creating music. The music is represented as discrete musical notes positioned in several channels at chronological positions on a vertical timeline.
A music tracker's user interface is traditionally number based. Notes, parameter changes, eff...

sand frost

Surely the average person on this discord is younger than windows

cinder karma

And by that point, I had too much stuff to do

even in the programming channel I imagine the average is definitely well below 38 yes

prisma flume

you're right, but also the average person is older than windows so it evens out

That's often what corporate culture is these days. It started with the laid back "we're not like other corporations" culture of Google and Silicon Valley startups 20 years ago, but over time and due to HR holiness spiraling and generally declining managerial and executive competence, it has morphed into a kind of cargo cult/race to the bottom.

crystal wren
# pliant snow <@147736231072104448> how is the new screen

I'm actually in two minds about it! In one way, it looks much better... and the 120Hz is some really nice icing for the cake. In another way, the original screen resolution was perfect for me at 100% DPI scaling, and I like fitting a lot on the screen.

200% DPI scaling on the new screen obviously looks fantastic, but it does make things a little... chunky for me. So I've ended up using 100% scaling and bumping up the font size in stuff as a compromise.

pliant snow

im surprised you liked 100% on the original screen, I think I'm at 125% or 150%

I just spent a week hunting a bug in a giant half-finished piece of FPGA legacy code that was so well-hidden that I really have to wonder if it was error or deliberate sabotage. Just a total headache that left me shaking my head and wondering why.

Here's my goal -- you know those NFC stickers you can get and stick around places to scan with your phone? I like that idea, but I end up never using them because I'm not holding my phone

safe dragon
pliant snow
#

So I want to make some sort of... thing. A keychain dongle or wristband or something that has an NFC reader and a 433 MHz transmitter that can then send the read data to my home server

#

It would slick as a wristband, I could just go around and press on stuff and make stuff happen

#

I could build it on a breadboard, but idk how to make it not awful to wear lol

rain apex
#

Does it fit inside a scrunchy

patent skiff

Miniaturizing all that into a wristband will be tough to do on a one-off hobby level.

pliant snow
#

yeahhhhh

#

the individual components just soldered together are too big i think

pliant snow
#

they're just stickers with NFC/RFID chips in them, you can write to them to hold a bit of data, then with a reader device read it back later. I had a few for a while that were paired in home assistant to do various things, but like I said, I would often not be holding my phone at the time so I didn't use them much

safe dragon
#

I do love nfc tech it's pretty cool though I hadn't heard of them being used in home assistant solutions yet

not as much as it would seem for how much i spend tinkering with it lol

#

at the end of the day, i think i mainly just have lights that turn on and off lol

safe dragon

I've resigned to not understanding the need for light switches that aren't just... light switches

What else do you use home automation for?

safe dragon
cinder karma
#

One day when I'm older and settled, I want one that makes the AC only turn on in the room I am in

safe dragon
#

when I'm older and settled I'd like to have AC

#

how would it detect which room you're in

pliant snow
#

probably either phone location or room motion sensors

#

I have a coworker who has lights come on and off at night using that. I kinda tried, but ended up getting too many false positives

safe dragon
#

motion sensors I feel like has a chance. phone location has too many flaws. One of which you just mentioned with not always having your phone on you

#

also would suck if you have a little kid who doesn't have a phone so the AC never turns on for them

pliant snow
# cinder karma What else do you use home automation for?

I replaced a number of wall switches with remote ones, and also have some remote plugs. I also have some temperature sensors (either cheap battery ones or a larger one outside that does wind speed as well) and receive their data. All those can be monitored or controlled with a few other devices, Ikea sells physical buttons/remotes you can use, I have a motion sensor, front door sensor, etc. Finally, we have an older robovacuum that is controlled by the server as well, although I probably could do that with their app

#

motion sensor fails when you have a pet

safe dragon
#

does the pet not deserve AC

pliant snow
#

We don't really have the ability to have AC in only one room

safe dragon
#

I don't have AC but usually when people get it here they just get it installed in the living room and that's it

#

maybe a bedroom

patent skiff
#

We would have to install motorized louvers on our vents to do that. Not really worth it for a three room condo.

pliant snow

safe dragon
#

never seen a window unit in my life in general

dutch window design doesn't generally even use sliding windows for which a window unit would work

safe dragon
#

my mom just uses a 24 hour timer plug thing

pliant snow
#

I want to do that too, I just adjust it every few months lol

#

I think I need to get an outdoor light sensor and have it relay the information in

safe dragon

pliant snow
#

my fanciest one is that if I come home at night, the door sensor will detect and some lamps will come on

I don't have high hopes

#

I should just install debian, apparently its pre-compiled there

safe dragon
#

how about the chaotic aur

pliant snow
#

uhhhh lets see

#

i kinda doubt it, this package doesn't seem very popular

#

nope

safe dragon
#

it hasn't been updated in ages hc_pensive

I hate intellij so much

#

i wanted to update it for the minecraft dev plugin to be updated. so i update it. and again. and again. and again.
apparently it's incremental so i download jetbrains toolbox to do it from there. oh no, you cant update things not from toolbox in there, so I uninstall it. The uninstaller doesn't work.
you have to make an empty dll in the intellij folder. the uninstaller now misses a bunch of stuff and i have to clean it up.
FINALLY toolbox doesnt see it and lets me reinstall it.

lesson: don't leave intellij idea 2 years out of date

safe dragon
#

damn

lethal walrus
#

indeed

crystal wren
#

Yeah, the real trick with Jetbrains stuff is to just use Toolbox from the start for forever.

lethal walrus
#

oh that released in 2016

safe dragon
#

even on linux I end up just using the toolbox

Man. Ask chatgpt about svn grep sometime

vsc consumes all until we all get taken by vim

Lol

i rmbr when i learned java on something called eclipse

#

do ppl still use that

supple ether
#

I used to use eclipse and I don't miss it

#

My sibling has been using netbeans since like 2012

devout vault
#

I don’t remember liking eclipse

#

Back when I was doing Minecraft modding (stopped after 1.8 came out)

supple ether
#

Ah, the great Slayer of Mods

#

I remember the modding scene never really caught up until 1.12, and the model changes were controversial for years

sand frost
#

I used to use eclipse and thought it was fine, but I haven't used Java in like.. idk a decade or more

#

and maybe I didn't used to have taste

supple ether
#

People are still actively making mods for 1.7.10

rain apex
#

what killed all the mods in 1.8?

supple ether
#

I didn't hate eclipse but it was just kind of meh and felt sluggish

supple ether
rain apex
#

oh but thats just like sdv 1.6 bolbthinking

supple ether
#

The models thing was the worse part

sand frost
#

i bet they didn't have pathos

rain apex
#

yea i was bout to say ig they didnt have some universal data model adapter mod like content patcher

supple ether
#

There were no tools to translate old models to the new format, and the old system was entirely incompatible

#

So everyone had to remake their models from scratch by hand at first

#

And there was a lot of stuff you just couldn't do with the new format at the time

#

It's like if 1.6 was also somehow incompatible with every old mod texture

rain apex
#

did mojang/microsoft intend to explode all mods LilyDerp

supple ether
#

Nowadays we have blockbench and better tooling and the new model system is great, but at the time it was bad

devout vault
#

I was just fed up with rewriting my mods every version šŸ˜›

supple ether
#

That's a valid reason too

#

A lot of mods have been abandoned over that

austere comet
rain apex
#

minecraft is harder to decompile too from what i gather

#

harder than just toss it into ilspy at least

supple ether
devout vault
#

Eh, still pretty easy to decompile, but no local cars and stuff

supple ether
#

It's obfuscated, yes, but there's nappings

devout vault
#

#

Vars

#

I swear autocorrect I will abolish you one day

supple ether
#

My autocorrect is screwing me over as well lol

rain apex
#

nappings sleep

#

yea that is the part i rmbr people raising fuss about

#

when they remove pdb

devout vault
#

But they were fun to make

supple ether
#

No they run it through a tool that garbageifies the names of everything

devout vault
#

My TiC clone had armor and ranged weapons before TiC proper did

supple ether
#

And then publish mappings to get names back

#

It's weird

devout vault
#

It was really fun with writing core mods

#

Since you needed to detect both the mapped names for development, and the unmapped names for release

(Ie. For the transpiler equivalent - no such thing as prefix / postfix)

devout vault
austere comet
#

True

supple ether
#

What did core modding used to look like?

#

IIRC mixins are a recent thing

devout vault
#

You manipulated the bytecode before the game loaded them. No runtime patching

supple ether
#

Fun

devout vault
#

Though you could still do it to other mods (I did it to thaumcraft with permission to get my pickaxes working properly in the the arcane bore)

pliant snow
#

You would go to the players home and edit their game as they played it in real time

#

To be fair

#

Forge provided many more APIs than SMAPI does

I don't code with Java anymore, but I used to hate eclipse. Usually I would used intellij Idea or netbeans.

netbeans sounds like cat toebeans

i love rider tho. vs22 is bloated and for what

#

i wish i could use Rider at work (we have resharper so theres that). did you know that self-driving forklifts need windows forms?

Eclipse was so bad. I may have ragequit and boycotted jetbrains over their license shenanigans and poor performance, but measured against Eclipse it's like the finest swiss chocolate vs. circus peanuts.

crystal wren

...they did shenanigans? What did I miss? SDVpuffereyes
