I was spelunking a cave, and unfortunately blocked my only exit with a shelf shroom. I went deeper into the cave, fell a bit, found a piece of map that wasn't connected, went out of bounds, and saw well THAT.

Personally it felt threatening.
To describe it, it was a shroud/fog of darkness. The tendrils were animated (Windows live capture is having issues with the game?)
