if values in a painting dont look good, the colours will never save it

its just about making the image readable at a glance, you can add colours to a poorly contrasted piece, but colours do not fix the root cause of a muddy piece

like putting lipstick on a pig or whatever that saying is lol

you can learn good contrast with coloured workflows but focusing solely on black and white first is a lot easier

id just suggest putting a color layer above your work, and filling it entirely with white or black. pay attention to where your eyes want to look. more contrast will always pull the eyes towards it, so you want bright lights and dark darks around the desired focal point of ur piece

your eyes will always want to look at the most interesting area

if you have good contrast and values maybe around a characters face, or what you intend to be the most interesting part; it'll read well

values can be understood if you think about a landscape piece. the very very distant mountains are very low contrast against the sky, theyre not super important in the piece and your eyes dont need to look at them long, theyre just the background. the sky and the mountains are almost the same value, because theyre uninteresting and aren't intended to hold attention

karaka is darker than the background because she is supposed to stick out, as is the flowers in the foreground. theyre the focal point with her, theyre the darkest and most important
