pose to pose is what you just described

keyframing the important stuff and then breaking it down into smaller movements through added frames. straight ahead you kinda just.... go straight ahead.... frame 1 frame 2 frame 3 ect

straight ahead animation works best for like. fire, water, things that dont need to stay consistent
