English has germanic roots but modern English borrows a lot from Latin based languages and smashes the rules together to the point where we have a lot of words that are pronounced inconsistently because they follow different rules from different languages depending on the individual word

Best example is OCTOPUS plural. The plural should be octopodes since octopus is taken from Greek, so its plural should follow Greek rules. But our most commonly accepted plural is octopi 😭 makes no sense!!
