There's two ways I want to take the fogs lore

Either the fog is a mysterious force that reshapes the world to its whims due to it trying to merge and overwrite with the spirit realm, or the fog itself is a gateway to a spirit realm alt of the island filled which is described by Lamplight as "An Ascent to Eden"

I gave a basic lore summary of his stuff

but to put it briefly

in Lamplight's continuity, theres the Peakling Realm and the Spirit Realm. The fog is an intersection in these two realms that can grow and contract over the entire island.

It acts as a "Bank"

• "There's a spiritual version of the island deeper into the fog(fun fact: this includes a lot of fanmade biomes). I do not know what happens if I try to ascend it, but maybe I could bring a group of scouts with me to investigate."
• "The statues and effigies only revive the recently deceased, if only the island stopped killing people we could start bringing back the longer dead."
• "There's a mysterious Peakling who wanders the fog. I haven't been able to get close to him because whenever he gets obscured by the fog, he disappears. How is he not dead?"
• "I hate that I can hear the fog whisper, it must be a conglomerate of spirits."
• "There's things in the fog that aren't spirits. They're from further in the spiritual realm."
• "The pillars on the beach grow a little higher every time the fog clears it. They look like they're made of bones."
• "I wish Myers could see me. I can't tell if he's a spiritual entity or not, but I know he might need a friend."
• "I don't see many mortal made structures, but the ones I do see seem unaffected by the fog."

this is a rather expansive take on The Fog, but it's something I hope to grow and nuture with community input.

specifically for the fog and it's Alternate Ascent located further in

I think the order of biomes in the alternate ascent, based on fan biomes and one of my own would be

The White Cliffs: A jagged biome that takes the place of shore. It has rolling hills covered in a soft, green grass that top jagged outcroppings of white rocks that pierce from the mountain. A bright light from Eden shines down onto the cliffs from above, causing them to cast shadows onto the lands beneath them. There's stalagtites on the underside of the cliffs that are great for climbing, however they are prone to break. It's possible to know if one is stable by throwing rocks at it and hearing a dull thud.

The Autumn Forest(credit @tardy notch ):
A lush orange forest that replaces the tropics. It's a vibrant colored forest with several more spouts and water sources than the normal tropics, with large, sap-filled trees that feed off the water from further up the mountain. Several flat lakes and rivers can be spotted as you ascend, with fresh drinking water and fish to hunt for, while spouts of sap liter trees, intending to capture those who fall into it and suffocate them. In place of the usual bands of rain are strong gusts of wind that could throw you about.

The Salt Bed(credit me):
A dead wasteland that replaces alpine/mesa. What once used to be a lake has turned into nothing more but a salty grave, where pillars of salt reach into the sky while red ponds of salt water stretch across the surface. The front of the biome is a combination of dead coral, sea rock, and salt pillars that reach towards the next biome. Skeletal structures liter the bed of The Salt Bed, nothing more than the remains of dead beasts and peaklings. In place of snow or heatwaves, storms of collapsed salt will form that will slowly dry you out if you stand in the open.

The Well(credit @ivory harness ):
A watery grave that replaces caldera. The land up here has been rend into pieces, with ocean water flowing between the cracks and gaps that splay the land. Below lies a grave of boats, sharp rocks, and foggy waters that will try to swallow you whole. While above lies waterfalls, ruins, and slippery rocks destined to send you plummeting into the drink. Some folk seem to live around here, despite being abandoned on their boats and planes. The water here seems to use underground grottos to reach The Autumn Forest.

The Bluefire Kiln(credit @tardy notch ):
A warped hell that replaces Kiln. Instead of the usual ascent through a fiery furnace, you must "descend" through inversed gravity using the jagged rocks and outcroppings that dot the walls. The lava has been replaced with bluefire, an gravity defying alternative to lava that floats upwards, pulling everything nearby upwards with it. The Bluefire Kiln is in a "constant state of eruption" due to bluefire constantly pouring out of it, disappearing into The Fog above.

Eden(credit me):
No one has made it to Eden, nor knows what lies up there. An escape for spirits, resurrections, wishes beyond the mind's comprehension, the truth of The Fog? The light up there shines brightly onto the biomes below, it's glow creates wonder in the eyes of those who witness it. There is no telling what lies in Eden, other than those who have sought it have died, their bodies disappearing into the spirit realm. Lamplight theorizes something of great spiritual potential lies there.

This is the concept of an Alternative ascent that takes place in the fog
