The reason you took so much isn't "struggle" it was you attaching to the wall right before hitting the floor, there's a moment where your momentum is actually sped up when attaching to a wall if you're going too fast then you slow down afterwards, because your character attached to the wall and then slid down the rock and into the floor you gained momentum right before hitting the floor rather than losing it, resulting in the increased damage.

Though you are correct about struggle resulting in increased damage, there's a "float" status that builds the more you're not standing on solid ground or when you're climbing without stamina, so spam stalling on a slope increases your "float" value and then when you touch the floor it's like you were falling for X more seconds.

Well if you start now on this map, the shores quickest path is on the right. Follow the pillars. Tropics is center, then leaning left. Alpines is center leaning left, caldera is practically walkable, and Kiln has pretty visible pathways

I only carry 1 healing item at most when solo since i treat it as a roguelike run anw, prioritizing climbing gear is pretty much optimal along with reupping on reserve stamina as much as possible.

Chain launcher helped save a couple of minutes in the kiln for me as well, caldera was a very straightforward run too, I spent most of my time in the alpines i believe
