Not necessarily. If we're going based on actual difficulty badges like not taking cold a certain amount of cold damage in Alpine or Heat damage in Mesa are probably the hardest. There is ways to make them easier or cheese them but by default probably the most difficult to actually do

ascents are difficulty modifiers, its still the same daily map but with added difficulties.

you unlock ascent 1 after completing peak difficulty and so on
they add stuff to the game like extra hunger, takes more stamina to climb, not having flares at the end so having to bring your own from the start etc ect
each ascent also includes the difficulty modifiers of the previous ones

you can still join others that are a higher ascent than you, but just be aware it will be more challenging
