I often just pretend like I'm not good and let them make the decisions and I just go along for the ride. Sometimes I get some really fun conversations with people in those games and I've had games where I was laughing the whole time. My main focus on my improvement has always been on my ability to "onsight" the maps. I'm always trying to improve my ability to visualize routes from a distance and I've spent a lot of time practicing tech to become more efficient. I used to focus a lot on trying to do my runs itemless before but more recently I've been working on improving using items more effectively.
