You can walk on the spiked logs but they will poison you quickly and bounce you around. It's usually fine to take at most two hits if it helps you get to a desirable path but otherwise you should avoid them.
Of course, if you have a bottle.of antidote, this becomes a more viable option.

@storm oyster as for general pathing tips, look for any of the climbable vines that can take you to higher grounds with ledges you can use, and smooth logs if available are sometimes great paths up large sections. Other then that, dont be afraid to go back down a level or two to look for a better climb if you hit an unmanageable wall.
