Take a look at map from far before you go in. You want the routes with lots of bumps, theres always a route.. but for tropics you need to look at vines and trees too

My thought was that instead of randomly appearing and dropping, he pops up when nobody is looking and slowly starts to hide if he gets too close to the center 45-60° of your view, so you only spot him from the corner of your vision, maybe this would cause him to not use the blow dart
