I’m a young person, and when I was being considered for being autistic at a young age the main reason I didn’t get a diagnosis was my high empathetic ability. The understanding at the time was that autistic people were bad at empathy. Now, I am diagnosed, and we recognise that hyperempathy is in fact a possible key symptom of autism in a good portion of cases (it is a spectrum after all).

For some people alive today, when they were born, “autism” more or less meant schizophrenia.
