the different areas are called biomes

ascents are difficulty multiliers: when you first start the game you only have access to tenderfoot or peak difficulty, you choose these when at the airport getting on the flight
you unlock ascent 1 after completing peak difficulty and so on
they add stuff to the game like extra hunger, takes more stamina to climb, not having flairs at the end so having to bring your own from the start etc ect
each ascent also includes the difficulty multiplers of the previous ones

nah if a game is on ascent 3, you can join it anyway, but if you complete the game and reach the peak, you would have then unlocked ascent 1,2 3 and 4
