Honestly, you just kinda have to feel it out and eventually you get an idea of what will and wont, mostly.

I'm positive it's momentum based. You can fall really far if you keep grabbing the wall for a moment to slow your momentum while descending quickly.

There isn't an official place for suggestions, but I can't turn my design brain off even when I'm playing other games now, so I'm going to post my idea here and let people yell at me if they hate it. ..or if they like it, they can yell at me for that too.

New Item: Tool Belt
    The Tool belt is an inventory-storage item similar in importance to the backpack. It gives you two additional inventory slots, but cannot be used to store most items. Most items that can be stored gain an additional effect.

Applicable Items:
    Piton - When you have a Piton on your toolbelt, you can grab and attach yourself to a Piton that has already been placed, securing your position. This frees your hands to eat, or use other items like the ropes, chaingun, shelf-shroom, etc. While climbing, you cannot place Pitons that are in your tool belt.
    Flare - When someone is incapacitated with a flare on their tool belt, the flare automatically lights, revealing their location to friends.
    Compass/Pirate's Compass - Allows you to see the compass at all times.
    Bing Bong - Cushions your fall, you take slightly less fall damage. 
    Lantern/Faerie Lantern - Can be lit while hanging from your belt, freeing your hands to climb.
    Binoculars - No additional effect.
    Scout Effegy - Revives player automatically upon death.
    Remedy Shroom - Explodes upon taking fall damage.

Reasoning:
    Having one backpack per area feels kind of lame for teams of 4 when one person has to wait for the entire game to get a new inventory-storage item. With a tool belt at each location, now everyone will have something by the time they start climbing in the Tropics. In my experience, the backpack always goes to the most experienced scout, but in this case the toolbelt is something that you might give to new or struggling climbers to let them have fun with the Binoculars/Compass in their early games, or to make things easier by giving them a few opportunities to forgive a mistake they've made. I imagine this as a multiplayer-only item, as it would make single-player too easy for a player who has both, though a new ascent level could replace the backpack with the toolbelt.

i think you have to eat 4 diff mushrooms for that in one run
relatively easy to do in beach and jungle as they have at least 5 diff shrooms and they are easy to find
